Best (and Worst) European Hostels: 2007
Europe's cheapest beds are in hostels! There are more than 2,000 hostels all over Europe and many are destinations in themselves. You can sleep in a castle (Britain or Germany), on a cutter ship (Stockholm), or in an Alpine chalet (Switzerland). Except in Germany's Bavaria region, most hostels welcome travelers of all ages. English is widely spoken by staff and guests and it can be a great way to meet people from around the world.

Brussels Belgium Hostel
I recently had my first stay in a hostel and was quite pleased. I only was going to be in Brussels overnight and didn't want to pay a fortune for a dumpy room so I took advantage of one of Rick's recommendations and booked a private room (required if over 35) at the Sleepwell Hostel in Brussels. The directions were pretty lacking and there were no towels or soap included with the room, however it was clean, quiet, convenient and had a nice private ensuite bathroom for 40Euros which was 20Euros cheaper than any dinky hotel I could find in Brussels. There were a few drawbacks however that might be a problem for some folks: (1) it is a long walk from the Brussels Noord Train Station and touch fo find since it is hidden behind a shopping mall building, (2) check-in is after 3pm, (3) towels and soap are not included, (4) there is a lift but you still must walk up one additional flight of stairs to the private rooms. The hostel is about a 10 minute walk from the Grote Markt which is the hub of everything you'll want to see in Brussels. I plan to go back but plan to pack even lighter next trip!

Hostel Archi Rossi in Florence
Hostel Archi Rossi in Florence is the best hostel I've ever stayed at!! I stayed in a 9 bed dorm room that was huge and spacious. The hostel is located less than 5 minutes from the main train station, they offer unlimited free internet access and to top it off, there's a free, to-order breakfast every morning!! I loved everything about Florence, and Archi Rossi made a great trip even better!!

Best European Hostels
Cochem, Germany Youth Hostel on the Mosel River was wonderful. Large comfortable room with bath, great breakfast, parking, great facilities, etc. Best hostel we have ever stayed in. Friendly staff, great for families. www.diejugendherbergen.de

Sorrento and Venice Hostels
The Ulisse Deluxe Hostel in Sorrento is exactly deluxe at Hostel prices. The buffet breakfast is E5 and you can order dinner from their selection for the same price. It is as good as a 4* and 10min walk from the train station. In Venice check out the website roominvenice.com right by the Burger King and 1min from the Rialto Bridge. Two of my best finds this Oct. Enjoy

Great Barcelona Hostel
I stayed at the Itaca Hostel in Barcelona. It was in the Gothic section right near the cathedral. Very central to everything. It was SUPER clean, great staff, colorful and a lot of fun. I met some great people. I highly recommend the place

Stayokay Hostel in Amsterdam
As a forty-something woman travelling with my sister last month, we stayed at the Stayokay Hostel beside Vondle Park. This was my first and will be my last hostel experience. While the staff was very helpful and friendly, I don't have many more positive things to say.
We were in a 6 bed dorm room ( our roommates were great ) but the rest of the hostel occupants seemed to be there only to party. Usually started about 10PM and went into the wee hours - every night we were there. The partiers were yelling in the halls and their rooms, running, slamming doors - you get the drift. Even heard of a young woman who puked in her room and didn't clean it up, leaving it for everyone else to manoever around. Her friends didn't care, but the other women in the room sure did.
I know some hostels have age restrictions - this one doesn't - I certainly wasn't the oldest person there. This has completely spoiled my perception of hostels.....NEVER again...

Clean, Fun Youth Hostel in Rome
My sons (ages 20 and 17) and I spent the week in Rome, and we stayed at Casa Olmata youth hostel. I'm 4 years over the 40-year-old limit for youth hostels, but they gave us a room at a second location they own and let this "old guy" stay. The hospitality was excellent. They cleaned the bathrooms and showers 3 times a day. And at the nightly rooftop spaghetti parties we met pleasant, interesting travelers. It was a great experience for my youthful travelers.

Barcelona Hostels
I would suggest staying in Barri Gotic. It is the old section of Barcelona ... THE most charming area. You can walk out of your hostel at night and be safe ... walking to it from other areas would maybe be sketchy. Within the Barri Gotic stay near Plaza Jaume .. it is the nicest pocket. We were three, and stayed in THE best location at the Rialto Hotel (more old world charm & not as slick as their site shows - although lobby is very hotelesque). It is a bigger hotel, you walk down creaky old hallways, also charming in old world way. Our room was very big, authentic old furnishings with a bit of charm... and a balcony. ANY hostels near by would be ideal: Rey Don Jaime I (up a block);
Hostal Fernando (right in the middle of where you want to be); Hostal Levante (nice charm & great location) &
Pension Mari-Luz (tucked a bit behind on side street but still in the middle of this little Barri Gotic area).
To the person who wanted to stay near the beach, I would strongly recommend staying in Barri Gotic, and making the small walk to the beach during the days.

Madrid Hostals
My favorite area of Madrid to stay is in the old section anywhere near Plaza Santa Anna (Atocha-Prado) ... from Calle Atocha toward Calle de la Cruz, and then down to La Prado. This area is a two minute walk to Puerto del Sol and its bustling surrrounding area & all the great tapa bars ... yet is less hectic ... and void of the street hustlers. AND ... a perfect & charming walk to La Prado. Plaza Santa Anna is very charming (tree lined) with a few great tapa bars and cafes. The nearer La Prado the more refined it gets. We stayed at Hostal Fonde Horizonte at Calle Atocha 28... across from an old church, just behind Plaza Santa Anna ...our balcony view was of the church. This Hostal is wonderful if you like charm (Parisian like interior); authentic old European furnishings; FUNKY; and small. The owner is very charming too ... and will help you plan your visit. For less funky places in the same area try: Cervelo Atocha 43 / Hostal Barrera, Calle Atocha 96/ or Hostal Gonzalo, Calle Cervantes 34 (all budget).
ALSO ...walking distance (few city blocks) to Atocha Station, and rental car agencies.

BAD ROME HOSTEL
We stayed in the Freedom Traveller Hostel in Rome, Italy. While it was well situated to the Termini station (about a 5-10 minute walk), it is not in the best neighborhood. We were required to sleep in a separate building that was 2-3 blocks away and we had an uncomfortable encounter with a local while walking to our building. There were suspicious people hanging around the streets on a regular basis. The newly installed AC and the free internet are about the only things it has going for it. The shared bathroom was nasty (smell and cleanliness) and our sheets were dirty with fresh black stains all over one of the sheets and there was hair on both of our pillows when we arrived. The free "breakfast" is not worth counting on. They don't even live up to the minimal standards of what most hostels serve. There was only one type of cereal and they couldn't even manage to put out a loaf of bread for toast. You were required to carry a set of 3 large keys with you in order to get back into your room, which is inconvenient. In order to have your door locked at night, you have to lock it from the inside using a very old style key that required allot of attention in order to lock or unlock the door, which is an unsafe fire hazard. If the building had caught on fire, it would've been difficult to get out under those conditions due to the lock. While most of the guys running the place were friendly and helpful, there was one guy who was not and he ruined any positive thoughts we had about the hostel as we were leaving. As a result of a mistake that another employee made, he insisted that we had not paid as we were trying to check out. Rather than treating us as if it was probably a mistake and courteously checking the status, he was rude and accusing before confirming the facts, which caused us to be late for our train. I would not recommend this hostel to anyone. It is one of the worst I have stayed in.

Cesky Krumlov hostel
Krumlov House in Cesky Krumlov is a terrific place, even for older travellers and families who might otherwise feel they wouldn't fit in at a hostel. It's in the Eastern Europe book. Our family of 4 had two double rooms and a bathroom in the attic of this wonderful old building, and got so much help from Karen, the Aussie manager. She booked horsebackriding and a shuttle to Linz for us, and told us all about the town, the sights, and the restaurants. The other hostel dwellers were friendly, and it was quiet at night. Great experience!

Germany/Switzerland Hostels
My 16-year old son and I have recently returned from a one month "grand tour". In Germany I can recommend the Schlos Ortenburg hostel near Offenburg, the Triberg Youth Hostel, the Black Forest Hostel in Freiburg. In Switzerland I HIGHLY recommend the Mountain Hostel in Gimmelwald.

bedbugs in Zurich
Just returned from 3 weeks in Italy and Switzerland. As usual the trip was great due to tips and recommendations from Rick Steves. My only complaint was our last night in Zurich at the Martahaus. Not friendly staff, bedbugs, and very limited breakfast "buffet". You had to pay for yogurt!

As for a hostel in Halstatt, this tiny town has only about 1,500 folks with but one main street going through town, so I doubt it has one. However, the RS-recommended Braugasthof Halstatt is a WONDERFUL hotel at a reasonable price run by the Lobissor family (www.brauhaus-lobisser.com). Lovely rooms overlooking the lake and directly across the road (hardly a street) is their biergarten under a spreading chestnut tree. We sat there supping a beer overlooking the lake at sundown with teh mountains in the distance and a companion remarked, "Is it possible that we are in the middle of a picture postcard". Try it. You will like it.

Ostello Cinque Terre Hostel
Our family of six (four teenagers)recently returned from one month in Europe. We loved this hostel in Manarolo for its top-of-the-village location, friendly staff, internet and laundry facilities available, and terrific patio and roof top seating for all to enjoy. There were several rules to follow but nothing unreasonable. Several great hiking trails into the hills above begin near the hostel.

Vancouver Studios in London England
We stayed @ Vancouver Studios in London -very impressed it started with a great welcome, very informative staff, great indian food,the room was abosolutly lovely-even with the inflation we felt it was a great deal.we found them on line i think with book It.Com -i think you can go direct and save money.they even had great connection for the ride to Heathrow-saved us money-they also stored our excess lugage in the office so we did not have to carry it upstairs-Big plus

It's a beautiful part of the world, but after finding it on the website and reserving it,, it was not what it was supposed to be. I found the owners also inhumane. My mother in law has enfezema and could not stay in a place where construction was going on. They would not accept that a valid excuse and charged us even though we did not stay

Krakow Hostel and Prague
The Tutti Frutti (Not misspelled) Hostel in Krakow was amazing - I love the brightly colored rooms, it was incredibly clean with new facilities (brand new kitchen with every appliance!), quiet enough at night but they still have a girl whose job it is to take hostelers out! everybody at the desk was really friendly. i really enjoyed my time here...
also, i second sir toby's in prague - even with all the rules that seem a little nitpicky (absolutely nothing left on the floor, it must be on ur bed or in a drawer or they toss it... what about my sneakers???) it was clean, in a good area (though out of the center) and all the workers were very helpful.

Nua Haven B&B Dublin, Ireland.
Myself and my partner have been travelling around Europe and staying in B&B and hostel accommodation wherever possible. By far the best we have come across so far was NUA HAVEN B&B in Dublin, Ireland. The website www.nuahaven.com says they offer 4 Star Quality B&B and boy is that true! The house is first rate and Bruno, the host, is most helpful and kind. We couldn't recommend it strongly enough!

Scotland Hostel! Fantastic!
This place was magical! Dun Flodigarry Hostel on the Isle of Skye. Not only was the host, Bryan, very helpful with advice about walks in the area etc, but was a perfect host in making all the guests feel welcome. The drive or bus ride up to the hostel from Portree is mostly a single lane road that is one the most beautiful I've been on. The hostel is clean - has a huge kitchen with all the supplies you need. The hostel sits right on the rugged coastline and the view is to die for. The brightly lit and brightly painted community area has large windows that overlook that great view. Near the hostel is several hikes within hiking distance. If you're looking to get away from the hoards this is the place to do it!

Hostels
I have travelled all over europe and i've stayed in some horrible places but i have a few really good ones... hope they help you because they were great for me! (especially on a budget!!)
Barcelona: Camping Villanova- its outside of the city but great value for your money, you get your own camping trailor with a kitchen and bathroom and there's an onsite grocery store thats SO cheap!
Greece: Santorini-Youth hostel anna its in perissa beach.. its awesome! so clean, 7euros/night, the lady that runs it is amazing! she is SO helpful she will help you plan your whole trip and you get a discount at the amazing bar across the street-great food great people there! (atlas restaurant)
Ios: farout beach club...its basically a 5star resort for 7euros a night! incredible!!! they are at the port when your boat comes in so don't worry about booking ahead
Prague: Archie Hostel-is awesome!! it doesn't look like much from the outside...well from the inside either but the guys that run it are SO friendly and helpful!! and its not a party hostel but still a great place to meet people! the beds are so comfy and big!
these are just a few...hope they help someone! (our budget was pretty low and these places gave us the best for our money, we were treated so well at each place)

My friends and I are backpacking through Europe this summer. We are leaving in a week, but haven't booked any hostels yet (mainly because our plan was to be spontaneous). Are we screwed or will we be able to reserve hostels a couple of days in advance or the day of?

European hostels
Travelled around Europe a few times and came across quite a few hostels. These are the good/great ones.
In Germany the DHJ hostels are a safe bet. Sometimes expensive, but always clean and comfy.
Munich - Meininger. Great staff, excellent rooms (v.clean & comfy), not expensive. Also Wombat's not bad.
Nuremberg - Lette Em Sleep.
Sorrento - Santafortunata. Cleaning isn't great, but location and atmosphere is great. Check it out.
Prague - Sir Toby's. Atmosphere is great, staff are ok. Great bar, and comfy beds.
Luxembourg - the YHA. Location's not great, but it's comfy and cheap.

Help with hostels
I noticed that someone else had a bad experience using hostels.com. My boyfriend and I are trying to find good, cheap places to stay as we backpack through Europe. We tried to book a place via hostels.com. We were told one price and then charged another. Anyone have a better suggestion as to what site to use? Any suggestions on where to stay? We need hostels for Vienna, Barcelona, Nice, Lisbon, Bern (or Zurich, or Geneva).

Ace Hotel, London
I'd like to second Alfran's comment about the Ace Hotel in London. I stayed there last July, and it was fabulous. In a very quiet, residential area (yet close to the tube) with a beautiful little backyard and clean rooms. I felt very safe leaving my luggage in the luggage room after I checked out; there was a hotel attendant on the lookout for sneaky behavior and people were generally very trusting (and trustworthy!). I only stayed there for one night, but from what I could see, it definitely wasn't a party hostel. That can be quite relaxing, though, after a lot of travel!

Hostel in Sevilla
The Oasis backpacker's hostel in Sevilla was one of the nicest I have ever stayed in! The people were great, the rooms and showers clean, and the terrace on the roof was a great place to hang out, relax, and grab breakfast!! Highly recommended, and I believe they have other locations in Granada and Lisbon.

The Beautiful Farm in the Italy Campagna
I stayed at Italy farm stay for 2 weeks and had a fantastic time with Giuseppe, Maria and Antonello. The farm, situated on a little hill outside of Abruzzi National Park (between Rome and Naples) was the perfect place to escape the city and just enjoy life. This is a fantastic way to experience Italy, and for a very reasonable price. I paid only €19 per person per night, breakfast included. Dinner, which is optional but incredible, is only €9, includes pasta, meat, salad, vegetable and wine. All of the wine and the olive oil is homegrown and homemade. The mountains surrounding the farm are the most beautiful mountains I have ever seen, even more beautiful than Colorado. There are so many animals here and while I was here, 3 baby goats were born. What an experience!!! Also, you may participate in activities such as hiking in the mountains, visiting an old-style cheese making shepherd, and horseback riding at a real italian cowboy ranch. Cortona In Tuscany
Cortona is a gem of a town,
And at the Hotel Villa Marsili We had the most wonderful stay in Tuscany: not just the building, the location, the view but also, and most important the Marsili people made our holiday so special.
Aperitif offered in evening before dinner and vin santo after dinner, nice touches all around. Very easy walk (< 5 min) to the center of town. Would recommend very highly, one of the best quality/price values I've had in Italy.

Vienna hostel
Spent several days at Wombat hostel,Vienna,The Lounge location.very convenant to Westbahnhof station and subway.Great staff 24 hrs.clean with basement lounge.Highly recomend,they are also located in Berlin, in Prague my wife spent 3 days at hostel Elf and had a wonderful funky and fun time

Best Hostel in Brugge Belgium
The Hotel Lybeer in Brugge, Belgium (actually a hostel €15 a night for dorms) is the best hostel I have ever stayed at.
It is impeccably clean, has comfy beds with provided linens, and ensuite bathrooms. Also, the included breakfast is pretty darn good and the location is quite central.
Highly recommend the hostel and the city.

A friend of mine and I stayed in Barcelona in March of 2006. We rented an apartment right off Las Ramblas. We were near everything we needed. It was called the Soho Apartments. Clean, safe, affordable...it was perfect for two travelling girls.

Hotel Lescot
It's not a hostel, but it's a great little cheap hotel in Paris. It's right next to a metro stop and it's on a cute little street. It's called Hotel Lescot. The outside isn't much to look at but our room was very very roomy and clean. It's close to lots of great food places.

i stayed at the campground that also has dorm accomodations, Camping Bagatelle -it's over the bridge from the center of town - about a 15 minute walk from the center...it was fine - bring insect repellent and earplugs - there were lots of noisy school kids there but it's cheap!

rome hostels without age limit?
I am trying to find a hostel in rome near all the main sites that does not have an age cut off at 35 or 40. The cheapest hostels in Rome all have this age cut off, but my mother is traveling with us. Are they strict about this? It is getting very frustrating- i can't find a hostel that looks ok, is cheap enough, that doesn't have the age restriction!

Great London Hostel

Listen, I probaly should have blogged two years ago. In May 2005 I traveled to Paris/London. If you want the BEST hostel in London, DO book the Ace Hotel. The rooms are clean, the staff are friendly, and you meet really cool travelers from...well, mainly America but my roommates were from Finland. The lounge makes for a great end-of-day meeting place, replete with a wet bar and hi-def big-screen plasma tv. Also it's modern and smoke-free.
The location is in West Kensington, which is residential(quiet!). It's removed from the major sites of the city, but that's no big deal if you know how to Tube it(take the Earl's Court stop; if you wait to West Ken you'll walking back blocks).
Will definitely book it when I'm in London again!

Hostel in Split
If you are going to Croatia and to Split then it has to be "Als Place" a small hostel in the Palace. at www.hostelsplit.com. The guy who runs it is really interestd in his guests and chatting with them about Split. We even went out with him to his "local" and had a few beers together.

Best Hostel
Just got back from Europe last week. Stayed in mostly BB's and hostels. Euro Youth Hostel - Munich, it's for everybody not just the young. The people were so nice and helpful. Location is walking distance from train station, just 5 minutes, very close to central square - Marienplatz. Inexpensive room, international phone and internet rates. Place is clean and organized. And they have the best breakfast buffet in a hostel I've experienced.

For those who were asking about hostel in Prague I know that Sir Toby's Hostel is one of the most comfortable places around. It is cosy like someones home. I found it really clean and beautiful. The staff are very knowledge and interested in you. And the hot chocolate in the kitchen was excellent. Plus the garden was so relaxing and the pub lots of fun.

paris hostels
MIJE hostels are great for paris. they are state run. just google, mije paris. all around 28-30 euros a night and they are near notre dame. free and simple breakfast. maubisson is particularly great and renovated. the only potential downside is that many student classroom groups use it as well. but i have been there twice and i am college agred.

Florence Hostel
Florence- PNP Guesthouse (easily found on hostelsofeuorpe.com or other related site) It's in a very grogeous traditional building only a ten/fifteen minutes walk from the town center. The place itself has so much character. Its obviously run by a local artist and the place is very colorful and vibrantly decorated. The place itself offers everthing, clean linens, use of washer and dryer, computer, everything you'd need and its all complimentary. The rooms are bright, clean, and open. The guy who runs it is incredibly friendly and understanding.. he's willing to go the extra extra extramile for anything. You have your own keys to come and go as you please and it was just awesome. if i can ever make it back to florence i wouldn't stay ANYWHERE else.

Prague Hostel
We stayed at Miss Sophie's in Prague. A bit of a walk to the city center, but a beautiful, friendly place. Just like a hotel, but cheap! I highly recommend it.

Hostels.com... BEWARE!!!
NEVER book using hostels.com unless you want to end up someplace way different than what their review tell you! It kind of scares me what happened to us... we booked this one hostel with perfect ratings and when we showed up the place was a total dump and the owner was quite strange and creepy. I remember he was asking us how we found out about his hostel and we told him on hostels.com. When we returned to the US I rated his place TERRIBLY and returned a few days later to see if he had received other poor review. My review had mysteriously vanished and no more reviews have been posted (or at least stayed posted) ever since... except for the ones saying the place is great. BEWARE!!!

Rome, London, Turin hostels
My two cents - from a single female older traveller. Well, I'm only 33 but in a few of these places I felt older! First time in hostels. My trip was just a few weeks ago.
In Rome I stayed in the Beehive and adored it! I stayed in their dorm room. It's quiet, it's clean, the beds are comfy and the cafe has tasty food. It's a place for the sightseeing crowd, NOT for the party crowd. It's only two blocks from Termini so you can hop on the subway or bus to get to any sight. I could go on and on...
As for London, I stayed at Ashlee House and was underimpressed. I think it's really aimed at a younger crowd so that may have been the problem. It wasn't horrible, and it's close to King's Cross station which is handy.
I stayed at the official HI/AIG hostel in Turin, it was clean and the room had only four beds. It's not central, it's a short bus ride from the train station. Free breakfast. I would rate it as "nice enough, safe and cheap".

Alpenhof hostel Stechelberg
We stayed here for three days cool place, really cheap clean & quiet,quaint rooms with super warm comforters.The breafast was an extra 10 swiss francs but Di & Mark did something special every day, the Scotch "porrige" with maple syrup is a must try so is the fried breakfast, great coffee!! They should get a new sign for the front of the house though as you can miss it, look out for the Aussie flag out front.

litte farm in mountains between rome and naples
My stay at a farm near Abruzzo Naitonal Park ,, dominated by the Appenine mountains,, was enthusing,, yet humbling,, hosted by a hospitable italian family,, I learned much about the personality of the region. I certainly highly suggest a stay here for those willing to invest in an experience beyond tourism. Besides, it is more affordable than hostels in europe.

The Alpenhof Stechelberg
If anybody is visiting Switzerland,we found a gem in the Lauterbrunnen valley called the "Alpenhof" in the Stechelberg village, you have to go past the tram station to get there & its right at the end of the valley. It's run by an Ozzie/Brit couple, really cozy & cheap(25 swiss franks a night) you get your own room, & linen is provided.They have great old wood stoves in the day rooms & you can do your own cooking for free.They also do a huge breakfast, but watch out for Diane's Blueberry muffins they are addictive.They even lent us their sleds so we could try. Love to see it in the summer when Marc's garden gets going.Great place.

Emily. I just saw your post on the graffiti wall. I stayed at the Czech Inn this past Sept. And it's amazing hostel.
It's a relatively new hostel that has only been open for about a year. So they're not even in the guide books. It's very
modern, and the staff is extremely helpful and friendly. The hostel looks more like a boutique hotel, except for the communal bathrooms.

Hotel San Maurizio in Venice
If you're looking for a hotel located near those famous attractions in Venice (San Marco, Ponte Rialto, Ponte Dei Sospiri..) Hotel San Maurizio is an excellent choice. Central position and clean rooms clean and nicely furnished with reasonable price.We were completely satisfied with san murizio. My only complaint is they did not have a lift service but we were lucky that the receptionist offered to help us carry our luggage 3 floor of stairs up. The staff were all welcoming and kind.

Stayokay Hostel in Amsterdam
Last October I was in Amsterdam for a week and at the advice of my STA travel agent I stayed at the Stayokay Hostel in Vondel Park. Its a great hostel. Best hostels
I highly recommend Archi Rossi hostel in Florence, Italy. It's an excellent value - central location, helpful staff, amazing cooked-to-order breakfast and clean. The place is also very chill and condusive to meeting fellow travelers, but lacks the frat-party atmosphere. One of my best hostel expriences in Europe!

King of Krakow
King Hostel, in Krakow ,Poland, is terrific. Multilingual staff, clean and quiet,close to trams to downtown,near a "milk bar" (really cheap but really good food). Cost was €48 for us, for which we had a room with attached kitchen (shared by occupants of next room).

Daniel: yes, reservations at hostels are needed. To answer your question: can we just show up and expect availability?
The answer is yes, but you may not get a room. Reservations are best when you can make them.
I have found rooms when we arrived at a hostel without reservations. But I never count on that happening.
Most travelers recommend that you arrive early in the morning if possible. Luck will determine if you get a room.
Once you get to Europe it is best to call the night before; if you spend the night in a hostel you can fax to the next one and reserve a room.
Summer months and holidays make it almost impossible to get a room unless you reserve well in advance.
There are several associations and each has a web site. Try hostelz.com, europefamoushostels.com, hostelworld.com, iyhf.org, hihostels.com and hostels.com.

Hostel reservations
I was in Europe this past May and most of the hostels were fully booked. I would reccomend booking as many as you can if you don't like tieing yourself down then at least book hostels for thurs-sun when they are the most busy. One of the downsides of not booking is you could spend up to half a day just trying to find a hostel it is a big waste of time! Also you may have to switch hostels each night in one city. I would say book as much as you can and especially in London, and Amsterdam I found they fill quick!

The conditions described below are not typical of the 14 hostels I have stayed in.
Most have private rooms now and you can lock your room. No one goes into your room.
I would never stay in a dorm as the poster did. Why stay in a room with 25 people?
