Best European Travel Web Sites: 2003

What Web sites have helped you plan your trip? What do you like about the various sites? Anything missing that we could add to ours?

Best Travel Websites
www.eurocheapo.com and www.venere.com are two of the best sites for hotels I've found. I booked all our hotels for a three week trip to Italy in Septemebr through them. Excelent prices and easy to use. Also, I really enjoy the slow travelers website at www.slowtrav.com. Although I've never tried renting an apartment or house in Europe, I am intrigued by the possibility.

Prague
There is very useful information about the Czech Republic and Prague at www.prague-guide.info; www.czecot.com; www.intellicast.com; www.czechtourism.com; www.spotrebitele.cz; www.idos.cz; www.dp-praha.cz; http://mapy.atlas.cz; www.europehotels.cz; www.travellers.cz; www.caldana.cz; and www.hotelsprague.cz.

Budapest, Hungary Website
I went to Budapest, Hungary recently and found this one site, Talkingcities.co.uk pretty accurate on what's going on there. Sounded like it was written from personal experience (which I like) and covered everything from sightseeing and travel planning to stuff like hotel/flight booking (although I booked through Delta). I also took up one of their recommendations on a restaurant, and it turned out to be a really neat place! I checked back recently and they now have sites to Vienna (Austria) and Prague (Czech Republic too) so it's certainly worth a look if you're planning to tour that part of Europe.

Info for Crete
Really enjoyed the information and ease of finding way around the website for Crete in Greece at http://www.cretetravel.com They also have some chosen hotels, really interesting places to stay - some are luxury and expensive but also midrpice ones that have lots of atmosphere. Helpful.

Good Web Sites
I like tripadvisor.com to check reviews about hotels from people who have stayed there. Also hotelcentral.com has reviews. trenitalia.com is great for planning train trips in Italy.

Why drive or take the train when you can fly?
Ryanair.com offers cheap flights to many destinations in Europe. Don't expect much customer service, and they are known to cancel flights, but it can be significantly cheaper than taking the train.

Amsterdam
Even if you don't smoke cannabis: http://www.coffeeshop.freeuk.com/ is interesting and has the best downloadable city center map. http://channels.nl has a huge amount of info. Check the message forum and the 1000 reviews (hotels, coffeeshops, restaurants) sections. www.ignatzmice.com is THE Red Light District site. RLD FAQ, tour and message board. http://homepages.cwi.nl/~steven/amsterdam.html online guide- very informative. http://www.alphons.net/ many panoramic photos. http://www.gvb.nl/ Official Amsterdam transportation site, reisinfo-->lijnenkaart for a great map.

Guide for Europe
I would have to highly recommend the Guide for Europe website: http://www.guideforeurope.com It is run by a fantastic Canadian traveler named Kim. She does a fantastic choice with the site. You can find everything from hostel/hotel reviews, information on locations and packing, to an incredibly helpfull message board. If you're planning a trip to Europe this site is a great resource!

DRIVING IN EUROPE
There are some very complicated intersection in Europe. By visitng Mapquest.com, you can zoom in to 100m, making it easy to track the correct way out of the interstection. It can save you plenty of time if you miss your exit at the Autobahn!

Great Bargains to Ireland
For my annual trip back to UK this year, I decided to look around and was glad when I found a great price to Dublin. I used EuropeASAP.com and would do it again especially since they offer cheap prices for other cities too. I did the Independant package as it easily beat the prices I got for just airfares.

Hostels Guide
Hostelz.com (www.hostelz.com) is the only hostels guide website I've found with real unbiased hostel reviews. It also has photos, and online reservations, which many sites offer, but it's the only site with a live calendar with the actual number of available beds for each day. And the site is completely free of ad banners, pop-ups, and the clutter that you usually see on most websites.

Great Site for Madrid
I'm planning a trip to Spain this spring and recently found www.multimadrid.com, a website that would be very helpful for anyone visiting Spain. It's run by a guy named Jeremy, an ex-year abroad student who is living in Madrid and makes his living building web pages and renting cell phones to tourists, year-abroad students, and businesspersons (www.onspanishtime.com, we're renting one for our trip). The site has a great message board (Jeremy answers almost all messages personally), webcams of Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol, as well as lots of pictures and video clips of almost everything in Madrid. I have no interest in www.multimadrid.com (or www.onspanishtime.com). I just really found it useful and wanted to recommend it to my fellow Back Door travelers.
