Dear Rick:
How come you have had no show about Kalingrad, Russia? Is it because it is the old Konigsberg, East Prussia and thus a political hot potato.

Turkey/Ottoman Empire
Dear Mr Steves
You have grossly overlooked the Genocide of 1.5 million Armenians in the early 20th Century in your historical coverage. This abomination was mainly committed under the Young Turk government, but Attaturk (who named himself Ataturk - IE "The Glorius One" by the way) killed off the thousands of remaining starving refugees under his watch. I would give him a far less than glowing review.
Thank you!

Your relationship at home
Rick, I love your shows. By going to places away from the tourist traps, we can see the other side of the country you visit. I have often wondered whether your wife travels with you on those shows where she is not shown, and if not, does she get jealous of some of the female friends/tour guides you have made acquaintance with. I am aware that you have a crew with you, but, I know how a woman can get. I guess my question is, has traveling and producing your excellent shows put any strain on your relationship with Ann?
Keep up the excellent work and Merry Christmas to you and yours. That goes for the crew too.

Sicily's history: not Arab (just 1 century)
Rick and family; thankyou for your excellent travel tips! Just a note on Sicily's history: as usual for westerners, the "byzantine" (East Roman) empire was left out of your commentary. The arabs only had the island for a century from 9th - 10th, taking it slowly in bits and pieces from the Roman Empire still existing from "New Rome's" seat, Constantinople. See youtube.com "fall of an empire: lesson of Byzantium" for great history which will add to your commentaries on your travels.

European Cathedrales
Rick's shows are good, except for the emphasis on European Churches, which are now nothing more than crumbling 'museums'. E.g. in his Spain presentation, he said something about 'the wonder of God', which was almost laughable, considering the incence being thrown about. Really it was a flagrant display of 'the wonder of false worship', by even the modest reading of 'God's Word'. In any case Steve tends to overdue these 'museums' in his travels, otherwise I do enjoy them.

Hi Rick, I love your shows and have used many of your very useful books. You're a WONDERful writer. But could you please pronounce "affluent" correctly? You incorrectly put the stress on the second syllable, instead of the first. I wouldn't mention it, except I've heard it on several shows. Sorry to be so picky, but your shows are so nearly perfect that I thought you'd want to be aware.

Music from the show
Could you post the sheet music for the theme song online? It would be fun to play it myself.
If you are going to, could you put it in:
Clarinet and flute??
Editor's Note: Thank you for your feedback. As the producer of Rick Steves' Europe it's wonderful to hear from people who appreciate the music we use in the background of the shows. We try to use music that evokes a mood without interfering with what's going on in the scene.
Rick Steves’ European Christmas CD is available to the public via www.ricksteves.com and our online Travel Store. It consists of 20 musical selections from the TV show, including special full-length performances by the Norwegian Girls Choir (Oslo), The Sixteen (London), the Bath Abbey Choir of Boys and Men, the Premiere Brass Quintet (Bath), the Wilhelm-Loehe School Choir (Nurnberg), the Nonsuch Singers (London), and Phonema (Beaune).
For the newer shows (those released from 2006 up to the present), we obtain our music from the APM Music Library. We license the music for use on the show (and for the DVD's and other digital media), but we do not own it and cannot sell it or give specifics about artists and tracks. If you have an I-Phone, you might try the App: Shazam.
The music from the older shows is not available. The composer, Jerry Frank, was planning to work to produce a CD which would have incorporated many of the cuts of music we've used in the various shows. He is a musician who lives here in Seattle and we do not know if he is continuing with plans for that CD.
Also, we do not have access to the music on the oldest “Travels in Europe” shows. Production was ten years ago and we no longer track it Thanks again for your interest.

US Taxes
As I was watching Rick Steves' Norway, he publicly told his (friends/relatives?) during a boat trip near Oslo that the Americans pay only 30% in taxes.
Dear Rick, it is an outright lie! We pay Federal, State, local, income, sales, and miriad other taxes that amount to close to 60% of our incomes!!!!! You deceived your European audience by making them believe that they are paying more than we do. Do not forget that we are getting much less for our money than they do.

Crete
Hey Rick, first off I have to say your shows are fantastic. I can't get enough of them. One tip though, I think you could easily do a whole show just on the island of Crete. It seems you have covered the major destinations already and Crete is certainly worth a look now. From great hiking and natural surroundings in the Samaria Gorge to the history and remains of Minoan Civilization, not to mention some fantastic beaches and beautiful harbor cities such as Chania, it is a place I can't get enough of.

Northern Spain/Camino de Santiago
Dear Rick, just wanted to say how much I enjoyed your show on Northern Spain and the Camino de Santiago.
As a former 'peregrino' , it brought back many memories from when I went in 2000. Beautifully shot and the brief interviews with pilgrims reminded me of why I went. I had just left my job at a big corp. call centre and needed to clear my head and decide what to do with my life. Like the British guy you interviewed. I wish I could return to the peaceful (mind) time I had. Physically, as you say, it's not for all. bad blisters, tendinitus are common, but usually people who try to rush, have worse problems. Don't be deterred. There was older and younger people than I was (age 37 at the time) of all physical abilities/types, especially some much older people blowing past me on the trails. Just savour and enjoy it. I was surprised you didn't include a pit stop at Gaudi's (Papal) Palace in Astorga (and the chocolate factory there too.) perhaps time was limited, maybe a 2nd show might be in order(?). Ok. Keep up the great work (as always!)

Galicia and Northern Spain
I just finished watching the new episode on Galicia and the Camino de Santiago (Northern Spain). As always, the production is top notch and Rick's insight is right-on. However, I must admit that I was somewhat disappointed with the content of the program. In my humble opinion, there was far too much time spent on the journey followed by the pilgrims and not enough on the destination itself. Santiago de Compostela is a gorgeous city and a pleasure to visit. Rick does cover the area in much more detail in the Spain Guide Book. The missing essentials, I feel, included stops in Cantabria, e.g. Santillana del Mar and Santander; in Asturias (e.g. The Picos de Europa National Park and Covadonga); and other Galician destinations (e.g Lugo and its Roman Wall and the gorgeous setting of La Coruna as sell as The Rias Bajas/Vigo areas). I am comparing this show to those in Southern Spain and to the ones for the various regions in France and I think that this one lacks the Galician one lacks the depth and breath of the other shows.

All I Want for Christmas Are Rick Steves Blu-Rays
About 10 years ago, I purchased the VHS tapes for the 1990-98 seasons of Rick's original PBS travel show. I always meant to by the DVDs of the 2000-08 shows but never did. Now with Blu-ray being the new medium, I'm dreaming of the following "Ultimate Collectors" set for BR -
All shows from all seasons 1990-2010-the '90s shows are somewhat dated but still fun to watch and compare with the new ones to see all the changes to Europe and to Rick. All the specials including Iran, European Christmas, Travel Skills (including the late '80s PBS travel specials that started the whole series), and shows made specifically for the pledge drives. The bonus features could include the Political Act lectures, tour previews, Rick's slideshow presentations, the ELCA videos, and of course the blooper reels. Also, think of the possibilities with internet connectivity from the discs.

2009 vacation in Poland
I like your show, since it is very educational. I get to know about places that I have not been to. Last year, I was fortunate to go to Warsaw, Poznan and Wroclaw with my family. It was nice being with friends in Poland as well. I liked the garden where Frydriyk Chopin is buried. I liked walking threw the Wroclaw and looking at the buildings and the little gnomes statues through out the city. Even though I did not get to stay there for very long in Poland, I really appreciated being in a place. My family and I enjoyed the food and the places in Poland, and I hope that you might as well. I hope that there can be a show based in Poland, since it would be really interesting to show on PBS and through out the US as well. I hope that Rick Steves can enjoy going to Poland as much as my family and I did?

Thnk you so much for your program on Iran.
What a beautiful country and people. The people seem so friendly and happy. Maybe some laws are strick, but modesty rules. No so in the USA. Seems as though the women are treated fairly and can get a good education. So impressed with country's ancient history. Would love to go there to see ancient ruins if country allowed it. Not crazy about the anti American graffitti. Thank you Rick for such an informative program about a country we know little about. Wish the show was an hour long. Saw it on the Create station.

My mother and I enjoy watching your programs together especially the ones on Scandinavia. If you say that Denmark did not do enough against the nazis why don't you mention that individual Danes used their small fishing boats to rescue almost all of the more than 7,000 Danish Jews in 1943 before they could be sent to concentration camps like the French Jews while 40 million frenchmen stood by and watched. Just search 'Danish resistance in WW II" for a bibliography of true accounts of how Danish Jews were sent to Sweden! by their danish friends!

Rick is Awesome
we love Rick Steves... I so enjoy watching his PBS programs and can't wait to get my own copies. My dream is to travel the world and homeschooling my children at the same time. BTW I am Christian and think S is very open minded but definately believes in God (this is a comment on someone elses thoughts on his faith). We also LOVED his talks at the Hempfest in Seattle WA and on TV the other day about our Civil Liberties! We NEED to take cues from what's working around the world and what so obviously is not working here. If you don't know what I am talking about check out what he says about the decriminalization of marijuana.

Thumbs Up/ Up Yours, Pal!
Given Rick's talk in his episode on Iran, expounding that learning more about each other's cultures can lead to friendship and a better world; and having heard that hand gestures mean different things in different parts of the world; I was shocked and concerned when Rick gave a friendly Iranian a "thumbs up." So, I looked it up in Wikipedia... "Thumbs up" traditionally translates as the foulest of gesticular insults in some Middle Eastern countries - the most straightforward interpretation is 'Up yours, pal!' ... In Bangladesh, Iran, and Thailand it is traditionally an obscene gesture, equivalent to the use of the middle finger in the Western world." Why has this episode not been re-edited in the interest of friendship & a better world? [rhetorical Q.]

Not sure what episodes you are watching. I am a Pastor and find nothing negative coming from RS about Christianity. It is also VERY clear that he is a Christian, he speaks of his church and faith quite often. Besides...even if he was not a christian and had a negative view of Christianity...it's a travel show!
Only listening to people who think, act and believe only exactly as you do is the antithesis to good travel and the example of Jesus.

Why isn't Rick on the Travel Channel?
I love that your program is only on PBS and not the Travel Channel, so fewer people know of your destinations. I guess the Travel Channel prefers to show ridiculous content, like where to find the best hotdogs in America. Other than Anthony Bourdain and Samantha Brown (both wonderful) there isn't much on there making for decent viewing. Oh well, the TC's loss is our gain.
As for a previous comment about Rick's voice, I find it rather mellow and not annoying in the least. And I also find Rick's comments on Christianity quite respectful. Keep doing what you're doing, Rick!

Rick Steves
Rick Steves has the most annoying voice on TV. Even though I watched his shows in the past to see various countries, oftentimes my husband and I would pick up oftentimes veiled negative comments about Christianity from him. It's obvious his leanings are toward secular humanism, which I personally don't want to see on a travel show. So I don't watch him anymore.

Dear Rick,
I was browsing in a Book Shop the other day and saw your guide for Ireland 2010 in it you gave high ratings to my favorite little hotel in Dublin, the Harding Hotel. Not only that but you also gave good marks to the Copper Alley Bistro connected to the hotel. Rick, I stayed 2 times in 4 months at the Harding, Dec 5-14th 2009, and What should have been 10 days in April 2010 became 17 due to Volcanic Ash. The people at the Harding became friends (from the bar staff, dinning room) and they all looked after me, gave advice on tours, etc. The staff provides curteous service, and work hard everyday to ensure their guests a pleasant stay. Thanks for recognising them.
