Alternative Accommodations

House swapping, convents and monasteries, college dorms... when it comes to beds, the less you spend, the more of Europe you experience. Others swear by renting a "flat" (apartment) or "villa" and becoming a temporary local. Any tips about fun, unique, or unusual accommodations?

I want to add my comments!

Affordable Parisian accommodations
One of the cheapest ways to enjoy a long stay in the Paris area is to sign up for classes with l'Alliance Francaise. In 2005 I stayed in a hotel associated with the school for 750 Euros for an entire month, when a 'normal' hotel room was 750 Euros or more for a three-day weekend. After my morning classes, and on weekends, I went to the Louvre eight times and made dozens of side trips via Metro or train from my hotel which was a block from a Metro station: Chartres, Versailles, Brussels and Bruges, Dijon, etc. I had a private room with a small kitchen area, which made food more affordable, too.

Castello di Montegridolfo, near Rimini, Italy
Located at the highest point in a tiny walled hill town a half hour's drive from Rimini, this medieval castello offered us a wonderful room with linen sheets, fluffy pillows, modern private bath, and a commanding view of the valley and neighboring hill town--all for just 90 Euro. Dinner at the Ristoro di Palazzo Viviani, in an old wine cellar a 2-minute walk from our room, was exquisite. We spent just one night in Oct '09--would love to have stayed longer!

Todi
The website for La Gardenia apartment in Todi, Umbria caught our eye and the reality exceeded the imagination. If you would enjoy staying in the heart of a beautiful, ancient town in a lovely, comfortable apartment, with great views and a generous host who knows the region, then this is the place for you with space to spare for two couples. We stay here and would return in the blink of an eye if we could Bron

Apartment in Rome
I stayed in a great little affordable apartment in Rome for 5 weeks. It was close to the #8 tram, so it was very easy to get back and forth to the center, actually drops you off right by the Pantheon! It is also down the hill from one of the most beautiful parks in Rome. I am a jogger so that was a big plus. The owner of the building is incredibly nice and the American girl that manages the apartments has been a tour guide in Rome for many years. She has tons of valuable advice. She can be reached at susanmsimcox@yahoo.it for more info.

Provence Gite (Apartment)
In Oct. 2009 we stayed in a self-catering gite (apartment) just outside Rognonas called Mas Saint Antoine (www.massaintantoine.com), which is in Provence, France. The accommodations were wonderful...your own kitchen, separate living room and bedroom, a private patio with your own gas bbq, a swimming pool, lovely grounds, a shared washing machine, and wonderful, helpful owners. The perfect, relaxing spot, and within easy driving distance to most popular Provence locations. We rented a 1 bedroom unit (Chez Pauline) and were more than happy with it. You definitely will feel like you are a Provence local. I highly recommend it!

Loire Valley Townhouse in Amboise
In Oct. 2009 we visited Amboise, France in the Loire Valley. We were lucky enough to rent "Le Cardinal" a 4 bdrm, 2 bath townhouse within walking distance of everything in the town. (www.vrbo.com/87249) We were originally planning to stay at a 1 bedroom apartment owned by the same people on their farm property, but they had a cancellation here and offered us an upgrade. The house came complete with everything you could possibly need, including a washer and drier. It was furnished with antiques and wonderful treasures. It was wonderful and so relaxing. I loved cooking in the big French kitchen and walking to the market or the restaurants in town. The owners Steven and Veronica really thought of everything to make the stay perfect.

Inexpensive studio apartment in Florence
We used VRBO (vacation rentals by owner) - also found here - to rent a wonderful studio apt in Florence - 3 blks from the Duomo in the old section of town. A fabulous value at 250 euro for 7 nights! http://www.vrbo.com/117745#features and the owners were full of useful advice. I highly recommend this apartment for anyone wanting to stay right in the heart of the old section.

Edinburgh Apartment
We stayed at a lovely, bright and clean 1 bed/1 bath flat in the New Town/Broughton St. area of the city. It was a nicely renovated Georgian apartment rated 4 stars by the Scottish Travel Board, around the corner from great pubs and restaurants, close to the train station and within walking distance of everything Edinburgh had to offer. Reasonably priced, also. Contact Charlotte @ charlotterfbatt@yahoo.co.uk

great hotel/bb in florence
wonderful BB in Firenze.. The San Frediano BB and Tourist house. Oltra Arno... HUGE rooms, one block off the Arno, back rooms open onto the garden and view of the river. When I say huge.. I mean huge. Our room must've been at least 20 feet by 25 feet by 18 feet, with a wonderfully frescoed ceiling complete with cherubs. They have a website, just search san frediano BB, Florence, and you will find it. we paid 80 Euros for a triple..well worth it for the quiet, peace and view. Air condit, frig and ensuite bathroom. Cable TV, wifi. Third floor with elevator.

Saint Malo Underrated!
St Malo is wonderful in the shoulder season. We stayed at the Hotel Elizabeth, delightful room, delightful owner John Nicolas and staff (Audrey). (Very helpful in retrieving a Tilley hat left on a TGV in Rennes). Tremendous advice and history. St Malo is VERY underrated. Delightful, quiet and secure - particularly intramuros!

Apartments in Venezia
Rick's Venice guidebook recommends venicerentals.com for apartments, but when its rentals were too expensive, we were directed to venice-holidays.com, an affiliated site. We stayed recently for 5 days in the San Marco Holidays apartment, and liked its central location. It pays to ask and not go just by the web site, as our apartment was listed as a one-bedroom, but really had two, which is what we needed.

Venice--Galleria & Don Orione Artigianelli
On our recent trip to Venice, Galleria would not honor what we thought were reservations we had made months before. We stayed at the Don Orione Artigianelli, right down the street from the Accademia, bathrooms en suite, reasonably priced, decent breakfast, simple but comfortable.

Rooms in Vernazza
We stayed at Annamaria Fontanavecchia via Gavino 15, tel 333 454 9371 or 0187 821130. Very nice and reasonable. Some rooms have bathrooms en suite, although we shared a bathroom. Ask for the double with the balcony. The ducks may make you crazy, but the rooms are simple but nice. This is right down the street from Il Pirata delle Cinque Terre, so good food and entertainment is close at hand.

Ile Saint Louis Apartment
We used Paris Attitude to find a great apartment at 9 Quai d Anjou. It was located on the quiet inner courtyard. Having a kitchen helped us save a load of money on meals and the washer enabled us to carry fewer clothes. ile Saint Louis is centrally located near the major sites and two Metro stations. We also used the limo service Paris Attitude offered. The driver met us as we arrived and then showed up right on time to take us back to the airport.

Tilde on 16
We just got back from a trip through Italy, using Rick (October 2009). In Vernazza, we stayed at an apartment from Tilde on 16, Carattino Road. It was recommended by a person in Rick's book that was already sold out. Unfortunately, I would not recommend the place. The room was fine, but at night, we were eaten alive by mosquitos. What's the point of having a sea view if you can't open the window and hear the ocean. The next night we closed the windows and backed in the heat. It was much cooler outside and the small fan did little to help. The bathroom was also tucked beneath the strairs, which made it cramped and offered a shower the size of a postage stamp. Water goes everywhere and its a mess. If we did the Cinque Terra again, I would probably stay in Monterosso Al Mar. Its a bigger town, but still quaint with a lot more spots to watch the sun set and drink wine. In vernazza, the small pier was crowded at sunset and had limited food and gellato options.

Florence B&B
In Florence, we stayed at a 2-room B&B that was perfect. I'd highly recommend. Its probably too small to be considered for Rick's guide books, but the location was great and the price was good at 100 Euros a night. It was Casa Leopardi. Here is the link. http://www.casaleopardifirenze.it/en/

Carstens Guesthouse, Copenhagen
I just got back from two weeks in Europe on an adventure that took me to the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark. And, I would like to recommend Carstens Gueshouse in Copenhagen for Rick's gay readers. Carstens offers a variety of sleeping options, suitable to any budget. The staff is friendly, and the location awesome. It is located on the fifth and sixth floors of an early 20th century building. Gay travellers, take note!

Cortona Villas
We have been looking for a vacation rental in Cortona Italy as my niece got married there is summer. As I heard so many great things about Villa rentals I was very exited to start my search. But I must say it was tricky because there were so many sites,US based, UK based Italy based sites, even god knows where based sites. I first contacted an agency that is based in the us and though very nice, it turned out that the person who wanted to "sell" the villa to me hasn't even been there but claimed it was just beautiful. So this to me did not make much sense. So I continued my search looking for an agency that was at least located in the country. I did find a site, that looked good, not great, but once I took a closer look it seemed like they mostly had villas and apartments in Cortona. And they are based in Cortona so I though that's much better. To make a long story short, we ended up booking a Villa for 12 that was just absolutely lovely and we were able to walk into town. I was a little worried that dealing with an Italian agency will be tricky but all worked so well. I got speedy responses to all my questions and we got to pay by credit card. They genuinely seemed to care about making our stay pleasant. It was a great experience, and I wanted to mention this here because the agency is small but I believe it is a gem. www.togetherintuscany.it

Overnight near airport in Slovenia
When we had a 7:30 AM flight from the airport in Slovenia we stayed overnight at the B&B Sobe Jana in the village of Vopovlje about three kilometers from the airport. The price was 30 euros for two, the .5 l beers were 1.5 euros and the ride for two to the airport by the owners son at 6 AM was 3 euros. The room were clean and the owner very friendly.

The airport bus from Ljubljana (for 4.10 euros) passes through Vopovlje and the driver will stop to let you off. The next time we fly to Slovenia and arrive late we will spent the first night at Sobe Jana or one of the other B&B's in Vopovlje. Two of our friends arrived late and by prior arrangement were picked up at the airport and transported to Vopovlje by the owner. They took the bus to Ljubljana the next morning. The bus stop is about 50 meters from the B&B. Internet contact: http://www.turizem-vopovlje.com/sobe-jana.htm http://www.apartments-rooms-jana.com

Rental Villas in the Luberon, Provence,France
We've been lucky enough to rent villas in the Luberon valley, Provence for the past few years from a company called Provence Holiday Houses (www.provenceholidayhouses.com) and we've had excellent service each time. The company is run by a well established English couple in the area, Paul and Anne Froggatt. I think they've been in business there for around 15 years. Anyway, they have a range of villas of various sizes available for hire, some of which they own direct. The service they give is very personal and they will often meet and greet you at the start of the rental and keep in touch throughout should you wish. Their rentals are packed with information on what to do and see in the area and come very well equipped. We found it really useful to have English speaking hosts especially as these two also operate a Provence touring organisation (www.real-provence.com) which has provided us with countless opportunities to explore the region ranging from it's wine and cuisine through to local customs, markets, architecture etc. You name it and these guys really know their stuff. We'd be happy to advise anyone thinking of renting in this area of our experiences of dealing with these firms.

Nice, France Apartment
We just returned from 2 weeks in France, and I can highly recommend the beautiful aprtment we rented for 7 days in Nice from Tony Cremer-Price. Le Panoramic on Mont Boron was spacious, had the most beautiful views of the bay, port, Chateau Hill and the surrounding hills, and was an easy walk to Old Town. The apartment comes with a private garage, so convenient when renting a car. Tony is British and very easy to deal with via e-mail. He mails the keys to you before you leave and you simply mail the keys back to him when you return home. If you need a host "on the ground" this might not be the best option, but if you're independent, want to wake up to the sun and soft breezes with privacy and a beautiful wrap around balcony, this place is perfect. We can't wait to return. You can see all of Tony's apartments at http://www.niceapartments.co.uk/

Villa Le Torri - Tuscany
I found this beautifully renovated 13th Century Farmhouse on cheapvacationrentals.com. It was absolutely amazing! Gabriele and his parents offer the utmost in Tuscan hospitality. A car is an absolute necessity and if you want constant computer access you will want to bring a Laptop. The computer available to guests is in the Office and Office hours are limited. The Welcome Buffet that is included is fabulous. Gabriele's Mother is an accomplished Tuscan chef. The Apartments are large and clean and well stocked. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. There are 9 Apts and there were 22 guests the week we were there. We made some wonderful new friends while at Le Torri. We were in Europe for just over 3 weeks...England, France & Italy. Our stay at Le Torri will be the memory that warms my heart for years to come...thank you Gabriele and Family..we can't wait to visit again!!

Vacation Rental
Recently I was researching rental properties for a spring time trip to Europe, and stumbled on to a cool app. that works within Facebook. What is cool about it is that it works through your Facebook friend network. It can connect you to friends or friends of friends etc. It’s pretty cool and is a little more intimate than a lot of the big pay services that are anonymous websites. I didn’t have any friends with rental property in Europe but I did fine 1 in the US. However I was able to find plenty of properties listed there, who knows maybe you have a European connection in your network.

Having a closer relationship between who you rent from or Who you might rent to, if you where an owner helps take a little guess work out of travel planning. The app is called Second Porch and can be found at www facebook. com /secondporch

Venice, apartment rental in Castello
My girlfriend and I just went to Venice with another couple and rented an awesome apartment in the Castello neighborhood of Venice. The name of the apt. was Campo Gatte apt. and we rented it through Venice Rentals. The site is www.venicerentals.com The price was just 200E a night on special so we split it up just 50E p.p and it was very, very, very nice! The entire apartment was killer. We had a flat screen huge tv, a cool terrace, an awesome enormous kitchen, a separate dining room and two incredible bedrooms. The tub was a triangular enornmous thing too. We were really happy with our find. The guy, Mauricio, the owner, that picked us up and brought us to the apartment was very helpful and gave us a pretty good tour too. We had a great time in venice and would recommend this company and this apartment to anyone going! Pete FLA

Amsterdam and Ireland
A group of four just returned from Amsterdam last week and we rented a houseboat instead of a hotel room. It couldn’t have been a better decision. If I ever find myself in Amsterdam again, I’ll never stay in a hotel room! It was much more private and cozy. We even felt like locals sitting on the boat and having a beer in the evening. The people watching was great and so was the location. I would recommend to everyone going to Amsterdam to rent a houseboat.

We discovered that Irish weddings are one of the best ways to meet locals. We stayed in Cabra Castle one evening and to our surprise there was a wedding that night, too. After the reception ended, the guests flowed into the hotel bar. We were immediately recognized as Yanks. After a few pints, we got to listen to locals sing old Irish folk songs. We didn’t want that evening to end!

Granola Mouth
Being a savvy traveler of places such as Mississippi, Florida and Alabama, a friend of my neighbor’s cousin through marriage recommended I try finding a convent or monastery to stay in during my planned trip to Prague this past spring. And so I did and the outcome was horrendous. I was not allowed to talk during the provided meals which was absurd. Granted my meals were free but what about my rights! Especially since I did pay my entire room and board fee of $10 in advance! Instead of talking to me like a human being, they simply slipped me a note asking me to take my barley soup and cabbage blintzes in the hall. I failed to grab my eating utensils so the soup was slurped and the blintz was eaten like a savvage with my hands. They also imposed a curfew on me. I was to be in my room each night by 11:00 p.m. with the exceptions of weekend hours of 1:00 a.m.. The punishment was that they locked me out! I slept on a patch of mulch across the street until 11:30 a.m. the next morning. And since I screwed myself out of eating with everyone else due to my mouth, a packaged granola bar from January 2006 was left outside of my room door on a paper towel. It would have been safer to eat the paper towel!!!

House Rental
It is my pleasure to recommend the Maison Troglodyte In La Roque Gageac, France as a delightful vacation rental. We (2 couples) spent a week there in June of this year and could not have asked for more. The house is charming, with a fascinating history, is equipped with all necessities and has the best view in the entire village from it's deck. A vacation just sitting on the deck would be close to perfect but both the village and surrounding area have many interesting sites and great restaurants that any visitor wouldn't want to miss. The rental agency, France Bound, was a pleasure to work with as they made the entire process very easy and went out of their way to see that all details were covered. The local contact in La Roque could not have been more helpful, friendly or interesting. After renting several houses, I highly recommend this one for a unique and trouble free vacation

Apartment in Dubrovnik
We just got back from a lovely trip to the Dalmatian coast in Croatia. While in Dubrovnik we stayed at Apartments Raic and Villa Ragusa. They are on a beautiful street, across from each other, right off the Stradun. The owners of both are amazing individuals and made us feel just like family. I would always try to stay with them first if we every have the chance to return. We hope to see Apartments Raic added to Rick Steves' book soon as Villa Ragusa is already in.

The Castle Steps Hotel Prague
First and foremost, this hotel is in a great location in a great city. Prague is rather compact and as the name suggests, it is near Prague Castle. Everywhere of interest from a short city break is reachable by foot and we didn't use any public transport.

The room we got at the hotel was spacious and got a great deal of light, whereby we got a wonderful view of the little quarter. It was lovely and peaceful at night and hard to imagine the throngs of tourists that were in the city during the day.

The room was spotless and well decorated and the young staff were willing to bend over backwards to make our stay as comfortable as possible.

A great price and at breakfast we met other very satified guests of all ages.

Try their website www.castlesteps.com of which you will find a wealth of information.

unusual places to stay near Rome
We stayed in a small unique hilltown just north of Rome named Calcata in mid-July. It is located 47 km North of Rome near Viterbo. You feel you are back in the middle ages away from the world. The town is in the center of a Naitonal park. We stayed in a small apartment through, I Sensi Della Terra, at www.isensidellaterra.it. Alessandro is the name of the guy who rents out a few apartments at very reasonable prices, we stayed for 90 euro for 3-5 days. It is more expensive on weekends. Alessandro speaks English(0761/587733) The little apartment was rustic but confortable, it had a kitchen and seperate bedroom. This place is great for nature lovers since there are many hikes to the river and to ruins that leave right from the edge of town. We had a car and you must park outside the town.

camping and couch surfing
I highly recommend camping while in Europe. Even if you don't bring your own gear, some places rent tents and many have cheap "cabins". Our son is almost 2 and we've been to Italy, Austria, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Norway in the last year and camped almost every time. It's a great way to meet people and while it does take more time you can save a ton of money and travel at a different pace. I've also 'Couch surfed" in Europe and had some great experiences. I find it's best to stay at towns off the beaten path. They get less requests, and are more accommodating.

Paris Apartments
We also rented a Marais apartment from Isabelle. We stayed in "Central Marais" and were definately disappointed. www.jeudeclefs.com . The location itself is great, right on the main street with grocery and stores and cafes all around. The St. Paul Metro is about 500 yards away and it took us less than 10 min to walk to Notre Dame. The last time we went to Paris we stayed in one of rick's recommendations on Rue Cler and were so happy. We decided on an apartment this time as we were travelling with our 23 month old son, mother in law and aunt. An apartment definately made more sense and for 150 euros per night it was definatley in our price range. However, the bathroom was very moldy - with black mold all around the tub and because the apartment is literally in the middle of the building there is very little light or air circulation. There are two windows but are definately not overlooking "courtyards" as she describes on her website. The apartment was newly renovated so everything else was great, but the bathroom and lack of fresh air and light kind of spoiled our Paris stay. If you check out her website this apartment looks fabulous, but is really just a place to lay your head. We had no problems dealing with Isabelle and she was really nice to us. Next time, we travel in a group we will spend a bit more money and go through an agency just to be sure we get what we see on the website.

Best London Apartment Ever
We stayed in the Mansions on Earls Court Road and booked through Mary Ette on her website www.gowithit.co.uk. I told her that we were travelling with our 23 month old son, my mother in law and aunt. She recommended the Mansions and we could not have been happier. We booked a 2 bedroom apartment and it was huge. I was nervous as I'd read all Rick's comments about tiny London hotel and B&B rooms, so this really surprised us. The apartment must have been close to 1000 square feet and we were so comfortable. They had a crib and high chair waiting for us and unlike a private apartment, it was cleaned everyday when we were out sight seeing. The pictures on the website definately don't due it justice. I just posted some comments about our paris apartment. That one looked great on the website, but was dreary. This one looks dreary and out-dated but it was bright, clean and modern. We paid 180 pounds per night, which was cheaper than 2 dreary B&B rooms and it was definately worth it for a family. My cousin came over one night as she is temporarily working in London and we had a great time "entertaining" her in our living room. I have read lots of other reviews on the web about the mansions and have yet to read a bad one. We have always stayed in one of rick's recommended places and hopefully he will add this into his guidebooks.

Paris Hotel
We stayed 2 nights at Villa Luxemburg. It is located on Boulevard Montparnasse in the Montparnasse area just 3 block from the Tour Montparnasse. The area is alive with interesting shops and restaurants. The room was very nice and inexpensive. Breakfast was included and wonderful and was as much as one could ever hope for. The staff was very helpful. This is listed as a 4* hotel, but I would probably put it at a high 3*. It is close to metro, and in general, it left us with a very nice feeling.

Hotel in Prague
We just spent 9 nights in a great hotel listed in Rick's guide - Hotel Hastal. A 5 minute walk from Old Town Sq.- great restaurant in the hotel. Small,(~30 rms) clean, book on line for good rate. It's on a quiet back square - located next to another hotel that would cost you twice as much!

Prague Hotel
We stayed in Hotel Elite in Prague. It was beautiful with painted ceilings, private bathrooms, comfortable rooms, and very helpful staff. It was inexpensive (Expedia) and near both Wencelas Square and Old Town Square with bus and subway stations just a half block away. Breakfast was included and although not gourmet, it was more than adequate. When we inquired about a taxi to airport, they volunteered that they had a taxi service and would meet the $30 fee to get to the airport. Their taxi came at the appointed hour and at the agreed on rate. Great hotel. Lots of charm.

Places to stay in Rome and Sorrento
We stayed in a lovely apartment in Rome that was quiet, wonderfully located between Campo de Fiori and the Jewish Quarter (easy to walk to all major attractions). Contact Mauro at mauro@team-shock.it. He was wonderful to work with.

If you are a Rick Steves' type traveler and love to stay in less touristy areas, we highly recommend staying about 10-15 minutes outside Sorrento in the town of Meta. Meta has the best beaches in the area, and the apartment was beautiful. It was so easy to get to Sorrento, Pompeii, Naples, etc. Contact Luigi at lcastellano@libero.it for information about his apartments. He was also wonderful to work with, and we loved the restaurant that he recommended.

Nicolas Inn, Rome
In Rome, Italy we stayed in a wonderful place called Nicolas Inn. Francois and Melissa Nicolas were so kind. It was a four room hotel, reasonably priced and spacious. Melissa will help you out to plan your itinerary and they even have a free phone card available for their guests to use in the lobby! We loved staying there and will be the only place we stay when going to Rome.

Marble House in Athens
Was excited to get reservations at the Marble House after reading about in Rick Steves book and also Lonely Planet - but they will only let you reserve rooms if you deposit money directly into their bank. I have never done this before and even tho their website states they take credit cards they refused!!

Paris Apartments
Think twice before renting from Isabelle. We just stayed at the Lancelot apt. in Paris (Marais) and did not have the best experience. We arrived on a Monday after almost 24 hours after leaving home. The apt. was not ready as promised and the housekeeper had us speak to Isabelle on her cell. She said there was some confusion and the other folks thought they had another day. We wandered the streets exhausted and without maps as everything was packed. Almost 3 hours later we went back and the housekeeper was still finishing off. Our plan had been to rest a few hours, shower, change and go out for the night but our day was pretty much a write off. Isabelle's email to us said: “Either I or my mother will come and meet you at 6:30 pm, to complete the check in process and answer all your questions...I will give you a call shortly after your arrival, to make sure you are comfortable with everything... Of course you have my cell phone number, which is +33 6 25 03 12 96 from abroad, and 06 25 03 12 96 from France in case you need help. I remain available to answer your questions about the apartment during business hours." We waited wasting precious time but neither she nor her mother showed up or ever called. You could not call out of the apt. without a calling card either. We eventually went to an internet cafe and emailed her to call us but still no call. We had a 6 pm flight and wanted to ask about leaving our luggage until about 2. The day we were leaving (there for only 3 nights) I borrowed cell phones from strangers having to leave messages as she didn't answer. On the 3rd try I reached her at about 10:30/11 am. I was told we need ed to be out - no exceptions. When I mentioned that we were not allowed access when promised and she never called us she got very nasty and said "you needed to be out at 9:30 am". I was so upset I burst into tears. I found my family and went back to the apt. Isabelle called us there to say the apt. would not be cleaned until much later and we could leave out luggage but by this time the threat and stress had ruined the day. Now, the apartment itself. The stone wall is neat and has character, the Murphy bed is handy. Marais area is neat. However, the red tablecloth was dirty and not changed, shower curtain was very moldy and dirty, broken glass on the bedroom side of the bathroom door. The cover on the sofa/daybed in the living room is actually a curtain wrapped around the mattress and edges of the bolsters are all raw/frayed edges. Both were in need of a good clean. Suite is non-smoking but the building isn't so there was a very strong smoke odor in the hall and apt. at times. It is 3 floors to walk up and stairs are very warped from age. No smoke alarms which with all the wood and smoking had me a little concerned. The garbage dumpster is in the main hall and at times was overflowing. In general many aspects of this apt. are run down and if Isabelle spent a few 100 euro’s on it, it would make a big difference. Isabelle did also not return the damage deposit in the 3 days promised (more like 10 days). This is not a place a single woman would want to stay in. I still think an apt. is a great way to go and would do it again but definitely not with Isabelle and def. not this apt.

Budapest vacation rentals (bvr.hu) have been our choice during two stays in this fabulous city. From the ease of arrangements to the location, quality and value of accommodation you can't go wrong. We stay with Ivanka in Ribno last summer and she was the best hostess we've ever had. So helpful and her apartment was very spacious for 5 of us and so clean. Paris apt.rental
Rented a spacious 3 bedroom 2 bath apt in Paris through Rent Villas. They also set up our airport transpotation. We were met by the owner of the apt. and he was very helpful with information about our home away from home and the surrounding area. We stayed at Champs Elysees I and would highly recommend this beautiful apt with lots of ammenities including internet. We were close to the metro and many restaurants. This apt was plenty big for the six of us and was a great experience for us first time renters abroad. Would rent again with the help of rent villas; they made everything easy and hassle-free.

Apartment Rentals in Milan
We rented a nice apartment in Milan through Rent Express. But the power went out, the water heater stopped, the kitchen lights worked only 50% of the time, the internet key we requested was not available at check in (and we never got it) and the espresso maker was broken. The staff of Rent Express were rude and not user friendly in getting problems with apartment resolved. Because of an early morning flight, we had to check out the night before. This consistent of our paying a young man 20 Euros to come to apartment to tell us to leave the keys on the table when we left. We would avoid using Rent Express.

Apartment Rentals in Rome
We rented a wonderful apartment in Rome through Halldis. Their website (www.halldis.com) was very easy to use and they were very helpful in making arrangements to get from the airport to the apartment. We were greeted at the apartment by an friendly and enthusiastic man who oriented us to the apartment and neighborhood. (He also helped us get a taxi when we left.) The apartment on Via Urbana was in an excellent location near a metro stop and close to the train station. We would definitely use Halldis again to arrange for an apartment in Rome

Paris Stay
Be careful with apartment rental agencies in Paris. I rented an apartment from Paris Stay (http://www.paristay.com) and ended up having to sue the apartment owner in a Paris court, which took a year, because she refused to return my deposit of two-months rent. The agency cut me loose and I was left to do everything on my own. I ended up winning my case, with damages for abusive treatment, but it was a horrible experience. Paris apartment agencies are greedy and not helpful. Be careful.

Provence Hub Farmhouse
Mas Cassaireu D'auseu, Plan d'Orgon, Provence, France

http://www.mas-cassaireu-dauseu.com/

A "mas" is a farmhouse and this beautiful farmhouse was the most wonderful hub from which to see the Camargue/Luberon area of Provence. I would highly recommend it for couples. There are four rooms; some single, some suites, but all have independent entrances. Although this is an old farmhouse, it isn't in a remote, inaccesible place. It lies in a small town near Cavaillon, just minutes away from Lourmarin, Avignon, Arles, Aix-en-Provence, Gordes, Les Baux, Oppede la Vieux, Rousillon, Isle sur la Sorgue... We stayed here June 2008 and were amazed at the attention to detail and true reverence for the building and its history. Each morning we were anxious to see what delectable treats Loredana had baked for us for breakfast. Our room was charming, well equipped, clean...we couldn't have asked for more! Loredana and Pascal were also the best concierges, and offered terrific daily tips on what was going on and where. At Mas Cassarieu d'Auseu we were staying with friends...never did we feel like customers. Bravo, Loredana and Pascal!

Galway, Ireland Hotel
Galway Ireland I just spent 5 nights at the Eyre Square hotel in Galway. I booked online and the total cost was 330 euro, which included a full Irish breakfast. This is mid-price range hotel that was neat, friendly, and very convenient to everything. It sits on a block located between the new modern bus depot where tours depart and the GoBus between Dublin and Galwy departs. It is right off Eyre Square which leads into the medieval shopping, restaurant/pub streets. My stay was wonderful, in town and at this hotel. By the way, GoBus offers non stop service between the Dublin airport (15 Euro) or downtown Dublin (10 Euro) and the bus depot in downtown Galway. Very fast, clean, free internet and friendly. I also took two bus tours - a half day tour of the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren with Healy Company and a full day, delightful tour of Connemar with theGalway Bus Co. They were both nice, but the later was better.

Paris Apartments--Maison Zen
In Paris we stayed at the Maison Zen (www.maisonzen.com), on a quiet courtyard off of Rue de Lyon, a little closer to Gare de Lyon than to the Bastille. A Zen center rents simple and inexpensive but pleasant studio apartments to anyone--you don't have to be a Buddhist or get involved in meditation--only take your shoes off and leave them in a cubbyhole at the door. There is a refrigerator and a small electric range (no oven).

Had a wonderful 2-room apartment in the heart of Rome....few minutes from the open market of Campo di Fiori which turns into restaurants/shops/bars at night!...close to the Vatican, the Ghetto and Trastevere! 81 Via Pellegrino (sleeps 7)...there were only 4 of us, so we had a lot of room to spread out our luggages and to hangout! London - Kensington Gardens Hotel
This hotel is recommended by Rick. Pros: good value for London; helpful and caring staff; clean throughout; fairly large bathroom; tasteful antique furnishings; comfortable beds; there are bathrooms in the hall if the one in your room is occupied; super location near Queensway and two tube lines. Cons: very creaky floors, tiring climb to the upper rooms, not enough breakfast tables for those who arrive after 8:30; television is mounted so as to make it difficult to watch; space for using the shower is very narrow. I'm already a repeat visitor, and would stay there a third time.

Vernazza and the Orange Room!
My husband and I had no plans or rooms when we came upon the incredible place in Vernazza Italy! When you step off the train, do not be frightened by the tall, long-haired Italian man that approaches you and asks if you need a room... this is Egi... Vernazza's unofficial host! We stayed in his "orange room" just a few yards from the beach and square. Although you have to climb many steps, the marble steps are artistry in themselves. He will also recommend wonderful little restaurants like Il Castello, the castle. Hard to get in without reservations but Egi will give you a card to present to his family Mossimo and Monica. This will help get you entrance to this historic place. He will also tell you about the best bakery and cafe in the 5 Pirates. A little removed from the square so we would't have known it was there until Egi told us. The twins (owners) are also a lot of fun to listen to! Enjoy Vernazza... definitely wish we would have scheduled more time! Ciou!

PARISBESTLODGE, rue du Bourg-Tibourg in le MARAIS
Bourg-Tibourg apartment from PARISBESTLODGE was wonderful to stay in. Location is perfect with Hotel de Ville metro so close by, Franprix just across the street and numerous choices of boulangeries down the street. Everything is just a hop and a skip; most certainly important with 2 kids in tow. We stayed in May 2009 and this apartment showed exactly the same way as described and pictured on the website. The apartment was well stocked with everything we needed to make ourselves at home. Thierry's attention to detail to make sure tenants are comfortable makes him a wonderful host. Excellent communication and ease of rental process was comforting for our first visit to Paris. We will most certainly recommend Parisbestlodge to our family and friends and hope to stay with him again on a future visit to Paris.

apartment in London
We just spent 5 days in London, staying at an apartment, which was a terrific find. It has 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, a very well-equipped kitchen which includes a washer/dryer, a large living room with dining area, and a large terrace which overlooks a private park. The location can't be beat; a few steps from Russell Square, 2 minutes to the tube station, many bus lines stopping just in front. Cafes and restaurants abound on the street (Southampton Row), and there several markets- - super and other - - nearby. Best of all, it goes for £125/night, plus a £40 cleaning fee. The Penedes area of Spain, just one hour south of Barcelona is the center of Spain's Cava (sparkling wine) production. Villas in Tuscany
The most unique and special Italian vacation I've just had was in renting a Garden Room at Casa Portagioia (House that brings joy) in Tuscany. Located at Castiglion Fiorentino, a short drive from Cortona, is one of the most spectacular Villas I've seen. It is beautifully constructed on acres that are surrounded by hilltop views and amazing manicured gardens. A solar-heated pool high above the Villas looks out over the countryside. This was found through their website tuscanbreaks.com. A movie and "drop-downs" await your exploration. Check it out and give yourself a break.

I'm hesitant to share this gem because I don't want to lose its charm! My husband and I shepherded 18 of his college students through Europe and spent three terrific days in Prague. All of us stayed at Sir Toby's (http://www.sirtobys.com/) and enjoyed the furnishings, the location, and the helpful desk. Madrid Hotel outside the city center
Like RIck advocates, look for places to stay away from the tourism centers. In Madrid, check out the Hotel Gran Conde Duque. For 90 Euros a night, you get a hotel with old world charm and modern conveniences. Plus it fronts on a park with a bubbling fountain and children who play. It's one and a half blocks from the San Bernardo Metro entrance/exit. We found the hotel on the Internet, using Google Maps to see the ground level view. No noisy traffic at all, but plenty of families gathering in the park each evening for people watching. Great place to take a book and read, which I did!

Brugge, Belgium Hotel Navarra
This was a very elegant hotel in Brugge but our B&B had fallen through at the last minute. Turned out lucky for us because the location of the HOtel Navarra was easy walking distance of the main sites of Brugge. The room cost was comparable to what our B&B would have been.

Parking is slim but there is underground party just down the street and our charge for overnight was $11 USD. Very reasonable as the hotel charges $15.

Breakfast was very hearty with plenty to choose fromn and the staff was friendly and happy to provide information on where to find lace and chocolates. Excellent location.

Garden Court Hotel - London
I booked the Garden Court in London after reading good recommendations on the graffitti wall and wasn't disappointed. The staff was wonderful from check in to check out. They even let us leave our luggage in the reception area after checkout until we left for the airport. They even arranged a taxi for us.

Soon after we checked in I was separated from my friend in the tube station and spent hours trying to locate her. When I returned to the hotel the staff helped me make phone calls to the underground police and the police to try and find her. I was frantic by that time and the lady in the desk was so helpful to me. My friend was located and the story turned out fine.

There is free wifi in a room off reception with a one pound 'honesty' box. Since I carried my own computer I was just able to plug in but did use their computer to print my airline check in papers.

Breakfast was basically continental but you can request eggs at a one pound each charge.

The hotel is withoin walking distance of the Bayswater tube station and in a lovely neighborhood. Plenty of restaurants in the area and we favored the Price Alfred for a couple of meals.

We stayed at Hotel Adler mentioned in Rick's books. It was very clean and well located for walking, but very noisy. Traffic and noisy halls trying to operate the keys. Quiet, great breakfast, free dinner from 2-7pm, yes free, convenient location and pick up from the train station.

Loved our convent stays
I recently stayed in convents in Rome, Florence, and Venice. They were great experiences and I will always stay in them when in Italy. Clean, modern bathrooms, cheap (74-90 euros/room/night), safe, great locations, comfortable beds, large rooms, and sweet nuns. Can't beat that! To make reserving them easier, I used www monasterystays dot com. Paid a booking fee, but it was quick and easy via Internet vs. faxing the nuns who don't speak English.

france hotels and museum pass
My son and I recently spent a week in France - 2 nights in Nice, 2 nights in Avignon and four nights in Paris. We stayed at the Hotel de la Fontaine in Nice. Great hotel, great location and great price. If you fly in to Nice, take the 98 bus for 10 minutes (4 euro) and walk 2 blocks. It was also just a 10 min walk to the train station or bus station, and 2 blocks from the beach. We highly recommend Hotel de la Fontaine. We also enjoyed our stay in Avignon at the Hotel Kyriad. Again, a great price for a nice hotel located on the main square. We loved Avignon and day-tripped to Arles, which was also really interesting. In Paris, definitely buy the museum pass. We bought the 4 day pass and it paid off on day 2. You can even use it to visit Versailles. It was easy to get from place to place by train and subway. Everyone says France is so expensive, but we did not find it so. We generally had breakfast - coffee and a sweet or roll - from a patisserie, a sandwich for lunch (about 5 euro and there are small take-out places everywhere) and we never paid more than 15 euro for a full dinner. Two of us ate well for about 50 euro/day. Be sure to have lunch or dinner at the Muslim mosque, and don't miss the unicorn tapestries at the Cluny! (and skip the concierge - disappointingly hokey)

Prague Apartment Rental
I highly recommend Arcadia Residence apartment rentals for anyone planning to visit Prague. The owner, Pasquale Guzmano has three, soon to have four, apartment buildings in the city. A couple of them are right off old town square. For the buildings that are further from the city center, they provide tram tickets and personally walk you to the station. They also do airport and train pickups. At the location away from the center, a two-tiered breakfast cart is wheeled to your room at the time of your choice, every morning. At the central location, you are provided with vouchers for the bistro downstairs. The owner and his staff are incredibly attentive, they have well-appointed kitchens if you wish to cook, and the city.....it speaks for itself. I now live two hours from Prague, and whenever I have company from the U.S., I send them to Arcadia. I know they will be safe, happy and well-attended to.

Budapest apartment rental - Budapesting
We found out about the www.budapesting.com here on the RS blogs.

We did a big trip through Czech, Hungary and Poland around Eastern and we have had a very nice stay in Budapest. We rented an apartment from Budapesting and the service they provided was fabulous. We got picked up at the airport, and a beautiful apartment was prepared for us: the Astoria Residence. The owner is a great guy, he told us everything we needed to know about Budapest and told us the places to avoid and the sights we should see. We did a trip with him to Eger as well, which was fantastic. The apartment was central, clean and newly renovated with a nice view. The washing machine and the fully equipped kitchen, as well the internet connections were very useful. We couldn't wish for anything better. In Poland and Czech we didn't have this good experiences, but that will be another post... Thanks for reading!

Villa Rental in Tuscany
Last summer my husband and I decided to celebrate our 40th birthdays in Tuscany. Our guest list soon became very long and we realized that we needed enough room for 45 guests, this is when we knew we needed to go with a villa. We rented two villas on the same property from Rentavilla.com and had one of the most memorable vacations we've ever had!! Yes, with 20 kids and 25 adults we were in heaven on earth just outside of Sienna. The two pools kept our little ones busy all of the time and we hired a catering service to do all of our dinners. Dinner for kids at 8pm followed by dinner for the adults at 9pm. When you are dividing up the cost between 25 it comes out very inexpensive. I definitely recommend that you check out www.rentavilla.com!!

Apartment in Rome
Do check references on any apartment rental. After renting several times, we got a bit careless, leading to the following experience. We were on our 7th trip to Italy and our 7th stay in Rome in late March. On this trip we were accompanied by our adult daughter and her two young adult sons. The apartment we had arranged for in Rome was in a great location in the Jewish Ghetto. When we arrived, the Owners seemed to be in the process of cleaning. We had called the previous evening to give our expected time of arrival. There were broken drawer fronts in the bedroom, which were attributed to previous renters with children. We were told the oven didn't work and what to do if the boiler stoped working. In spite of these issues, we paid our rent for the 6 nights we were to stay, plus a $200 damage deposit. The next day the toilet began failing to flush properly, so we called to report the problem. We were asked to give it until the next day. The next morning it did not flush at all (at least it wasn't overflowing, just filling, then draining very slowly). We called again and were told the owner would meet a plumber there that afternoon. We went out on planned tours. When we returned, the toilet was GONE. We began packing our things. The owner returned a short time later and explained that the plumber would be back the next day. We said that we obviously could not stay under those conditions and asked only for our damage deposit to be returned. The owner objected, stating that we were likely responsible for the plumbing problem. We finally convinced her that since she was getting 4 days rent and we would have to find a hotel and would be out that extra money it seemed only fair that she return the deposit. She relented and returned our 200 euro deposit. We then asked for an hour to complete our packing and find another place. She refused, saying she didn't have time to wait. So, we packed immediately and were on the street with our bags at 16:30 in the afternooon. We left our daughter and grandsons with the bags and walked to the Smeraldo (we stayed there previously on Rick's recommendation). They didn't have 2 rooms to accommodate us and recommended a nearby very expensive hotel, saying, "what choice do you have?" We went around the corner to the Promezia, who had a room for one night, but not the 4 we needed. We then headed to the Hotel Campo di Fiori. We had stayed in one of their apartments previously, but found them rather expensive. The manager who helped us was very sympathetic, asking what we were paying for the apartment. He said he couldn't match that rate, but would try to help us out. He didn't have rooms for that night, but did have two apartments (one for 2 persons and one for 3) for the following 3 nights. He then arranged with the Promizia to give us a substantial discount for that night on the rooms they had available and gave us a considerable break on the price for the apartments for the remaining 3 nights. We could not have been treated better if we were paying full rate for rooms in the hotel. They really saved us in a very difficult situation. I just had to share with someone how well we were treated by everyone at the hotel. Thank you for listening.

Venice Rentals
VeniceRentals was recommended to us by our local travel agent. We had never rented an apartment in Europe, but we absoutely did not want to pay the outrageous hotel rates. So we took our chances with VeniceRentals. WOW. We rented a two bed/bath apartment in San Marco near the square for the 4 of us. The agency is more a family operation of Denise (not me) and Maurizio and they were absolutely fabulous. The number of emails I received from them - months before our trip - was outstanding and the information was dead-on. The apartment was spacious, clean, and complete with a kitchen, a washer and a TV. It had an air-conditioner, but being April, we didn't need it. Maurizio met us when we arrived at the San Angelo vaparetto stop and helped us with our bags. He sat down with us in the apt and told us all we needed to know. I highly recommend VeniceRentals to anyone traveling to Venice! It was a great experience!

Great Paris Flat
Froggyflat.com offers rental of a very nice-sized one-bedroom flat in the Marais (3eme Arr.) near three Metro stations. An easy walk to the Pompidou Center, Notre Dame, etc. We were there in March and would recommend it to anyone looking for something other than a hotel in Paris.

Paris Apartment Rental Fraud
We "rented" an apartment from 24paris.com from a Casper and Emily Bulley that was a fraud. When we arrived in Paris at the given address we found that no such person or rental existed. We were left to find another place to stay with 3 children in tow. We were helped by parisattitude.com. They have a REAL office in Paris with nice employees who speak english and french. Agencies may charge a fee, but at least you will have piece of mind.

castle Hostel in Bacharach
We loved our stay at Jugendherberge Stahleck hostel in Bacharach. It is a 12th century castle with a view of the Rhine. It is a Hosteling International dorm type environment. We had a family room with bunk beds, a great breakfast, dinners optional. We ate dinner every night. Great castle experience with dorm beds. Wow.

Giuseppe Amorosi-Rome apartment
I recently stayed in an apartment rented by Giuseppe in Rome. I found his ad on Craigslist and emailed with him for many weeks prior to my trip. He was extremely helpful in choosing a location and selecting a room. My plans changed a few times and he was always able to accommodate me. The rental rate for the 4 nights I was in Rome was very reasonable especially since it was between Christmas and New Year's. He was extremely helpful before and during the trip with questions I had including sites, transportation, language, and currency exchanges. The apartment I stayed in was split into individual rooms to share with others but each room had plenty of privacy. He has some renovated apartments, mine was not but it had lots of charm and history to admire from the 15th century building! I would highly recommend renting with Giuseppe if you are going to be in Rome. His apartments are very centrally located (15 minute walk from all the great sites), very well priced even in peak season, and he is very friendly and helpful to travelers staying with him. I'm looking forward to returning for another visit!

Varenna Lake Como
We booked early january to rent 3 apartments for one week in july for a wedding.Marilena house windows open to the church and this is the reason of our first choice. All the other accomodations offered more we could imagine. We very higly recommend these apartments. http://wwww.varennaflats.com We found Varenna itself a very good base for exploring Lake Como. It is handy for train travel, meaning you don't need to hire a car if travelling up from Milano or Bergamo. Perfect for boat travel too, whether cruises or the ferry to Bellagio/ Menaggio. A happy holiday in a beautiful location!

www.couchsurfing.com
www.couchsurfing.com is great. At first it sounds a bit strange and maybe dangerous, but once you check ot out you will see it is legit and full of kind, seasoned travelers willing to let you stay in their home and show you around. It is a great way to meet people and it's free!

Antik Han Hotel -- Izmir, Turkey
the Antik Han Hotel is a historic building -- the former home of Ataturk's father -- and it's charming. centered around a lovely courtyard, the rooms are spacious and comfortable, have free internet access, and it's so quiet and peaceful you'd never guess that just outside is the bustle of a major city intersection. even better, it's right behind the ancient agora of Smyrna (the old name of Izmir), which is one of the best attractions of Izmir - a fascinating ruin to wander through and explore. the staff of the hotel are friendly and helpful, and the included breakfast is good. as for the service -- the staff even returned the camera we had inadvertently left behind, sending it DHL to our USA address. we thought it was gone forever, but there it was, intact and with a very kind note, when we returned home. Antik Han is a fantastic value -- budget prices for a boutique-like experience-- and a truly wonderful find in a big city.

The Castle Steps Hotel
This hotel is a great place to stay for a number of reasons. Firstly, there is a laid back air, but one that is happy to provide you with anything. Very pleasant, native english speakers is a nice touch. It seems a well organised place with rooms that have names.

Our apartment was named Pine. Big enough for the two of us in a beautiful attic space above reception. They seem to have many different kinds of rooms - breakfast was included but in a different building to which we stayed in.

Finally, great location near the castle - all the major hotspots of prague were in walking distance.

Apartment rental in Rome
Just wanted to give great credit to Mauro at omtour@omtour.com. We rented the apartment at 23 via de Pellegrino on the 3rd floor, and absolutely loved it, had a wonderful experience. Mauro picked us up at the airport and pointed out places of interest on our drive in to Rome, indluding an open-air organic market, where we got cheese and some other nibbles for our stay. It was a great, great experience, and I would reccommend his service to anyone, anytime.

Accommodation london has great, inexpensive flats near the Kilburn tube stop that can be rented by the night, 4 nights or more, discounts over 14 nights. It's in Zones 1/2 so you don't have to pay any more on your oyster card than you would in London's more central parts. We paid 50 pounds for two people per night in a "studio flat" -- basically a hotel room w/a kitchen. It saved us a ton of money on food, plus we got to know another part of London -- more residential and more "real". Would recommend it to anyone.

Giuseppe Amorosi-Rome apartment
Just came back from a wonderful trip which included a six night stay in ROMA! It was the best experience and a major part was living like "temporary locals." I found Giuseppe on Craigslist and felt that I could'nt go wrong (was worried about getting scammed) because he does not require any money upfront! I only found one other person who did that and their place was not in the city center as our apartment was. The price was great for high season (Christmas) and he picked us up from the airport and took us to the train station when we left, for less than a taxi would have charged. The apartment was newly renovated, simple, and included washer, which saved us some euros. The bathroom was small (so were all the others we saw in hotels the rest of our visit which included Florence, Venice, and Munich)but clean and plenty of hot water for two. We stayed in Campo di Fiori near the Ponte sisto, and walked everywhere. He means it when he says it's centrally located. If you go in winter as we did, it was very cold but the rooms had their own heating (cooling in summer) appliance. Wonderful, could not be happier with our experience. Thank you very much Giuseppe, I hope to see Roma and your apartment very soon!
