Borgo Tranquility (Quiet village) Tuscany
We found this wonderful little house by chance while on a touring holiday in September 2011. The owners were very helpful in accomodating us for a last minute booking & prepared the house in a matter of hours ready for arrival - even staying up until after 11pm to greet us at the property. It turned out to be a wonderful find, nestled amongst olive groves on a hillside not far from Castiglion Fiorentino and Cortona & with great views across the valley from the private pool on www.tuscancharm.co.uk

This was the first time we had stayed in this part of Tuscany & although it was an all too brief stay of only 5 days we had plenty to keep us occupied. Blessed with beautiful weather while we were there it was very tempting to spend all our time relaxing by the pool. But we had come here to explore & so tore ourselves away to visit some of the charming nearby villages with their historic buildings & cobbled streets; not to mention great places to buy the local produce, cheeses & meats. A sort of foodies heaven it turned out be. The property is situated along a white gravely road & about 2Km from a local shop, bar, & what turned out to be a wonderful local Pizza restaurant offering excellent food & good value for money. THere was also an ancient pizza oven next to the cottage - so, we could have prepared our own ! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here & were very sorry to have to leave after our all too brief encounter.

Casa Moriciani
It is truly difficult to describe Casa Moricciani. Not only is the location in Tuscany perfect for traveling to the cities if Florence, Siena and, my favorite, Pienza, the peaceful elegance of the villa itself was worth the trip and the reason I will return. Everything was so well planned...the gourmet kitchen, the lovely baskets of local fruits, cheese, breads and pastas, the wonderful wines on hand, and detailed instructions for visiting the surrounding villages. The living areas were splendid and the bedrooms unbelievably comfortable with elegant linens, waterfall showers with light therapy and every toiletry imaginable. The garden was so very peaceful and overlooked the picturesque Tuscan countryside...olive trees, vineyards, and tall cyprus trees. Calm, peaceful, elegant no detail missed in the planning of this wonderful villa. Perfect for a gathering of friends...next time will be a wonderful romantic getaway with my husband! Thank you, Isabella and Carlo, for making this trip such an unexpected pleasure in every way!

i greppi di silli
We've stayed at i Greppi di Silli now 3 years in a row. Located 40 minutes south of Florence, the location is ideal for exploring Tuscan hilltowns and the Alfani hospitality is hands down bar none!

We've stayed in both a 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartment. Plenty of room, comfortable beds and clean spacious bathrooms.

They offer a family dinner for 30 E - each course served with a wine produced by the co-op the participate in.

Working farm, wine, olives, also raise bees - the honey and oil oil are fantastic.

Definitely worth checking out on your next trip!

Cretaiole &Le Casine di Castello in Castelmuzio
Lovely apartment in the village of Castlemuzio - associated with Agriturismo Cretaiole. Apartment is well equipped and accommodates 4 adults easily. Isa and family are wonderful hosts and amazing ambassadors for the Val d'Orcia region of Tuscany. Many options for learning about the local history, culture and food - highly recommend.

Casa Moricciani, Tuscany (Castelmuzio)
Enchanted Tuscany

As winter starts to settle here in western New York, I daydream about my stay at Casa Moricciani this past July and long to be back there. As my best friend and I embark on our 50th year of friendship we decided to do something really special to kick it off. Our answer: a week's stay in Tuscany at Casa Moricciani which we refer to as "Enchanted July".

We had high expectations after reading about Casa Moricciani and viewing the lovely photos on the website (www.casamoricciani.com). Let me tell you honestly, our stay exceeded all expectations!  Our home for the week was comfortable, luxurious, a tasteful blend of the old and the new, like ancient tiles with a story to tell along with a stunning red enamel professional range in the kitchen- a joy to look at.

Everything in the villa is of the highest quality, from the bathroom fixtures to luxury toiletries. A peak experience each day was my shower with water falling gently on my head from the elegant rainfall shower fixture while I gazed directly out the open window in the shower over the Tuscan landscape of olive trees and vineyards glowing in the morning sunlight.

Through wonderful Isabella we were able to hire a driver for the week. Angelo is a treasure who added a whole new dimension to our memorable experience. With only a week we were able to head out each day to a different destination (Rome, Florence, Siena, Cortona)  without fear of getting lost or having to negotiate hairpin turns and wild drivers. We didn't even worry about parking since Angelo dropped us off and picked us up. Even better, he shared his knowledge of Italian history and culture and once even serenaded us as we drove home at the end of the day.

We were amazed at all we were able to accomplish in one week. Other adventures included dinner at the Sant' Anna in Camprena monastery (where The English Patient was filmed), a visit to Etruscan ruins in nearby Pienza, and walks and meals in the charming town of Castelmuzio where Casa Moricciani is located.

Another perk I would encourage you to take advantage of is the preparation of a gourmet meal by chef Manuele in the villa's well appointed kitchen. You sip wine as you watch talented Manuele prepare your meal and teach you as you watch. The reward is sitting down to an amazing meal in an elegant setting without having to leave home.

On our final morning before Angelo drove us to the Rome airport (dropping us off at the door- worth every penny), my best friend and I sat on the patio in the early morning dappled sunlight sipping our coffee as a hot air balloon drifted by. Magical. What an amazing end to a week we will never forget. Perhaps our only regret was not scheduling more time at Casa Moricciani  because it is truly a destination unto itself, capable of restoring peace of mind and nourishing the soul. We will be back.

Tuscany
Spent a week in November at Cretaiole in Tuscany. One of the best experiences we've had yet! We were so impressed and enamored by the Moricciani Family, and their expertise in sharing the various highlights and the culture of the region. They quickly made us feel like close family friends as we enjoyed amazing wines, beautiful sights, delicious olive oils, pecorino cheese, prosciutto, pisci, etc. Would recommend this experience to everyone! Wish we could have stayed longer.

La Crocina Holiday Farm
Planning a trip to Tuscany? Rick and I highly recommend La Crocina Holiday Farm. The location is perfect to explore Tuscany and Umbria, and Barbara and her family are the perfect hosts. We stayed in a comfortable apartment, shopped locally in Montalcino, and had a wonderful dinner at the restaurant at a neighboring farm. We used La Crocina as a home base for leisurely exploring Tuscany hill towns. If we ever have the blessing of returning we will stay at La Crocina again!

L'Erba Persa Levanto, Liguria
Our family of 4 (two teenage sons) spent a few nights at L'Erba Persa in June 2011; if we had known what it would be like, we would have spent more time. A short walk away from both the train to cinque terre and the charming town center of Levanto, L'Erba Persa allows easy access to surrounding areas of interest while maintaining a sense of relaxation and separation. If one wants to see the beautiful sights of cinque terre without being constantly surrounded by the tourism that accompanies the towns, L'erba Persa is ideal. The house and the property (the historical aspects of the house, the animals, the farm, the delicious breakfasts) immediately give off a warm and authentic vibe. The hosts, Claudio and Grazia, exceptionally friendly and hospitable, always happy to assist (with good suggestions), make this place truly special. The bedrooms are comfortable, attractive and spacious. L'Erba Persa epitomizes the genuine, relaxed and charming ideal of time spent in the Italian Riviera. Highly recommended, hoping to return sometime soon.

Frallarenza - Umbria
Agriturismo Frallarenza is a charming farmhouse about 20 minutes north of Orvieto run by the talented and generous couple, Francesco and Serena. Francesco speaks almost fluent English and although she's too humble to admit it, Serena speaks enough. The farm produces delicious olive oil and grows wine grapes. The olive oil and the wine made from the grapes grown on the farm are both available for purchase onsite as well as a huge [INVALID]ion of Serena's handmade crafts.

We came from Florence (about 1h 45min away) down the A1 autostrada. Exiting the A1 at Fabro and continuing south through Ficulle on SR71 there are two ways of getting to the farm. The recommended route involves less unpaved road: drive past the first turn-off for Cassia Antica (shortly after Ficulle) continuing south on SR71 until reaching the turn-off on the right for Strada Provinciale della Sala. Take Strada Provinciale della Sala through the town of Sala. A couple kilometers after Sala turn right onto Cassia Antica (there will be a brown sign for Frallarenza pointing down Cassia Antica). This leaves only a small stretch of unpaved road before reaching the farmhouse.

Frallarenza is well located for day trips to several of the surrounding hill towns and even bigger cities like Florence and Rome. Orvieto is very accessible and a secure pay parking lot and elevator which delivers you straight into the town make it extremely easy to pop in for lunch or dinner at one of Francesco's recommended restaurants (Mezza Luna had the best pasta I've ever tasted). There is a very scenic drive that took almost 2 hours to get to Todi. But there is also a more direct route that enabled us to return in about 40 minutes. We also day tripped to Rome just as easily. This entailed driving 20 min to Orvieto's free train station parking lot then taking a 1.5 hr train to Roma Termini.

We stayed in the small apartment which was gorgeous and comfortable. We were there in December and never once felt cold. The bed was big and comfortable. The apartment was decorated with Serena's pottery and woven projects. The kitchen had everything needed for serious cooking, including their olive oil. They said they had stocked the fridge and pantry for the first days breakfast, but there was definitely enough to last longer than that. Serena had even prepared a little dish in the fridge for us to heat up for dinner that was delicious. They had also prepared a welcome breakfast tart which was traditional for the region.

Our favorite aspect of our stay were the classes provided. For the pottery class, we followed Serena and Francesco into Ficulle where we went to her workshop. There, we learned about the history of the local terra cotta pottery and the methods used to produce it. Serena is an extremely accomplished artist and gifted teacher. Francesco tagged along to help give more detailed explanations of what Serena wanted to show us. Because we were staying long enough and we took the class early enough, Serena was able to fire our projects and give them to us by the time we left. When we met Francesco and Serena in their beautiful (and enormous) kitchen for a cooking class, they had printed out menus of what we would be cooking with the recipes for each dish. They were very patient with explaining the details of why each ingredient was added and the traditions of each dish. The food was incredibly good: fresh ingredients from the local market and their garden made all the difference. We had a wonderful dinner with the whole family. There were even some leftovers that they sent home with us.

My wife also devoted a day to weaving classes with Serena. Serena showed her how to use her traditional hand loom and demonstrated how she spun wool. Then my wife was able to weave a scarf of her own.

Francesca and Serena have an extremely energetic and playful Australian Shepard and cats that lounge around the premises.

The location of Frallarenza makes it very logical place to stay. The setting is beautiful and peaceful. The accommodations are clean, comfortable, and affordable. Most importantly, Francesco and Serena and the most gracious hosts we've had the pleasure of encountering. We learned so much while staying there, I can't wait to return with the rest of my family.

Italy Farm Stay
Italy Farm Stay (south of Rome) Via Colledardo n 8, 03030 Pescosolido, Italy +393402517941

Our family of four (two girls 8yrs and 5yrs) spent a week with Antonello Siragusa, his mother and father, and his family of volunteers at the Italy Farm Stay! We had a wonderful time getting to know everyone, having family meals with the volunteers, planting, riding Leah the Donkey, walking to town, and building things around the farm. Samantha (8) had her birthday there and Maria made a huge cake for her. Sam: "I liked feeding the animals and making an olive-tree fort and olive-tree crowns". Macy (6): "Thank you for letting us stay there, my favorite thing was helping out at the farm."

Wonderful people and a great vacation. We highly recommend it!

Le Casine di Castello, Castelmuzio, Italy
My husband, two adult children and I recently stayed at the two-bedroom townhouse, Il Cielo, in Castelmuzio. The town of Castelmuzio is small and quiet with about 200 residents. There is one restaurant in town. The townhouse was very clean and spacious and the kitchen had everything we needed to make a meal including olive oil, spices, coffee and tea. Castelmuzio is close to the bigger town of Pienza. Isabella was a wonderful hostess. She arranged a cooking class for us at a local organic farm which was one of the highlights of our trip. If you are planning a trip to Tuscany, I would highly recommend staying at Le Casine di Castello. You will not be disappointed.

Agriturismo Cretaiole
This was our first experience at an agriturismo. We traveled for two weeks during November and spent 4 nights at Cretaiole. Isa is a first rate hostess and the accommodation were great. You must take advantage of the itineraries and helpful tip books she has in each apartment. We did the pici making, olive oil tasting, visited the farm, and a wine tasting. We also explored three of her day trip itineraries and her directions are spot on. We were never lost even without a gps.

Pienza, San Gregorio
We had the incredible pleasure of staying at two of Isabella and Carlos properties, though that was not the plan when we boarded a plane to Italy. Due to the floods and landslides which happened in Montorosso, Cinque Terre, our intended destination, we were forced to make very last minute plans. Our trip, which was planned around a business meeting in Milan, would only allow 4 days of travel before boarding a plane back in Milan. A quick email to the Rick Steves website yielded an immediate personal response with a couple of ideas in Tuscany. Isabella Moricciani of Casa Moricciani, responded to our phone call in minutes (speaking perfect english), directed us on train departures for that afternoon, and had a rental car waiting for us at the station when we arrived. It was very late when we arrived in the little town of Castlemuzio. Isabella and her husband Carlos were waiting for us at the entrance to the town. They showed us to the villa, unloaded us, then asked the local restaurant to stay open so we could have a late dinner. It's the only restaurant in town, and the food and service are both fabulous.

Isabella was helping other tourists that were in the same predicament. For that reason she moved us around a little so all could be accommodated. The first night we stayed in Casa Moricciani which is exquisite in every detail. This villa mixes the old with the new, as you will find antique doors, woodwork, furniture, and artwork along with beautiful travertine bathrooms and an awesome kitchen complete with fully stocked wine cooler, fresh fruit and flowers, coffee, milk in the refrigerator and more. The master suite bathroom has a beautiful deep jacuzzi tub, which lead to a relaxing end to a very hectic day. The view of Tuscany from the back yard is breathtaking - complete with rolling hills, olive orchards, vineyards, castles, and churches, whose bells would chime in unison on the hour. If that weren't enough to keep you glued to the back yard, as you look around there is an herb garden, an outdoor shower covered in jasmine and a small stone fountain/wading pool.

The next three nights we stayed in II Nido also in Castelmuzio. It is a downstairs apartment in a charming old stone townhouse called La Casine de Castillo. It is cozy, quite lovely, very clean and well appointed, with an arching brick ceiling, modern bathroom and small kitchen with a table. It's decorated in antiques and artwork with the same flair as Casa Moricciani. The king bed was perfect, the kitchen was great for making a quick meal or coffee, and the private courtyard was a nice place to enjoy a glass of wine by candlelight. There are a couple of bikes parked in the entry for guests use. A sweet little hideaway for a couple to enjoy privacy as well as a great location to adventure from.

As guests, we were invited to the three generation family farm, San Gregorio in Pienza. There, we visited with family members and other guests while learning about (and tasting) the delicious wines, olive oils, prosciutto and cheeses. Guests are free to pick fresh vegetables from a large garden. In Isabella's "Big Book", which is provided at each property, she has listed all the best restaurants to try, car tours to take and towns not to miss. In addition, the family provides experiences and activities that you can participate in if you wish. Through an established network of locals, there are activity choices beyond the family farm as well. We chose a 3 hour walking tour through the vineyards and olive orchards of the Val d'Orcia which was a photographers dream.

It was a whirlwind trip, and we are still awestruck at the speed with which Rick Steves redirected us to this fabulous destination. And we are forever grateful to Isabella and Carlos for their grace and warmth in taking us in and making our short unplanned stay into a dream vacation we will always remember. We hope to come back and bring the family one day - soon!

Borgo Argenina, Chianti Region
I would love to say we had a marvelous time at Borgo Argenina, but sadly, that was not the case. I have never written a such a bad review of any place, but I feel the need to pass this along. First of all I have to say that Borgo Argenina is a very nice place as far as the buildings and accommodations go. Our problems were with the owner/innkeeper. There were so many issues that caused frustration (to put it mildly), that I decided to list them so you would not think I just didn't like the owner and decided to write a bad review. So here goes...

1. Upon arrival in Rome from US, I discovered I had lost my ATM card and had no way to get any cash. I did not have a pin number for my credit card to get a cash advance so that was not an option either. Knowing we had 3 weeks in Italy, finding resolve for this was our first priority upon arrival to Borgo Argenina (BA). To begin with, we were a bit confused trying to follow Elena's directions to her place, and finally decided to call her. When she answered the phone the first thing she said with what sounded like anger was "Where are you? I have been waiting all day!" She seemed shocked we could not easily drive there following her map. She would not stop talking and truly seemed angry with us for getting lost. She kept repeating that her map is perfect, that we could not be lost. I actually had to assertively ask her to stop talking so I could tell her where we were and to ask again how to get to BA from there. 2. First thing the next day she came to our room and told us she was angry that we did not sit down with her for her "Formal introduction talk" immediately upon our arrival for sight seeing and dining in the area, but instead talked to other guests for their ideas. She said we should ask her, not others, as this is her country. It was as though we "broke her rules". I am serious, she used the word "angry". I also heard her tell this same thing to other guests. 3. After breakfast we wanted to use her phone to make a collect call to our bank to request a new ATM card. I looked for Elena to get her permission, but was told she had left to go shopping. Since she knew about our problem concerning the ATM and the call was collect, I went ahead and used her office phone for the collect call. She came back while I was on the phone. As soon as I got off the phone, she ANGRILY confronted me saying I had no right to use her phone!!! She was raising her voice with me and I had to try interrupting her several times before she heard me say "I called collect". 4. My husband ask her if she would please call her bank and ask if they would accept a money wire from his brother in the US to hold us over until we could get a new ATM card. She refused to even make a call to her bank to ask. 5. A couple of times a week she cooks dinner for guests and they also help her cook if so desired. We had reservations to do this, but she refused to let us have dinner there because she only accepted cash for the dinner even though she knew we had the ATM issue. Alena accepts credit cards for the rooms, and she knew we were attempting to get a credit card cash advance from a bank in Florence 2 days later. 6. When we made our reservation, Alena let us know that we would have to change rooms 2 times while there and we agreed to this. In the email she wrote: "Anyway don't worry we'll think about moving the luggage and you will enjoy your vacation just coming back in a different accommodation." But she flatly refused to move our luggage at all. She told us she could not possibly do that by herself. When I suggested she have her staff help her, she said, "That is not possible" and left the room. 7. She approached us on our 3rd day there and said she "made a mistake" and she owed us for one night since she noticed that our reservation was only for 4 nights, not 5. I told her it was for 5 and we would be leaving Saturday. She said, "That is not possible. I have already rented the room to other people". We had to show her our confirmation email she sent us for 5 nights and then she backed off. Thank goodness I traveled with my computer!

Overall, Borgo Argenina was a horrible experience. You may find it hard to believe that all this happened, but it did. Luckily, touring Tuscany was still as nice as ever!

Frallarenza in Umbria, near Orvieto
Francesco and Serena have created a little paradise for travelers that looks like a working olive grove/vineyard/garden/ceramics and weaving studio/kitchen/haven! We visited in late October and wandered their hills, woods, and perennial gardens as well as visited Orvieto and little Allerona. Our hosts made it all feel like home. You owe yourself a retreat to their comfy, impeccable three-plus bedroom apartment. We made ourselves a supper with Francesco's new oil and we carried Serena's spectacular pottery home in our backpacks and carry-ons. What sweet memories! We sincerely hope to return--with friends next time. There's plenty of room for everyone, and a kitchen you would be proud to call your own. Grazie, amici!

Cretaiole in Pienza
Much has already been said about this amazing agriturismo located 3K outside of Pienza. Without question it is a must stay if you want an authentic experience in Tuscany as you will be educated about history, culture, and cuisine through your excellent hostess, Isabelle, and her family. The website doesn't make it perfectly clear about the lodgings options. At Cretaiole, the farmhouse, there are 6-7 apartments for rent. Another option is to stay 8K from Pienza at their second property; one of two apartments nestled in the middle of a small hill city, Castlemuzio. We stayed here in the one bedroom apartment and loved it. They also have just started renting an absolutely gorgeous villa, located in Castlemuzio as well. Pienza is the perfect nearby little village to have as your stopping point for all that you may need. I really can not recommend this wonderful place enough. You won't be disappointed!

La Falconara-agriturismo near Montepulciano, Tuscany
We stayed at La Falconara from Oct1-8,2011. There are 3 fully equipped apartments in the farmhouse near Montepulciano that the host completely renovated himself. It is surrounded by olive trees and vineyards and with a commanding view over a valley of gorgeous Tuscan scenery. Our hosts, Alex and Ingrid made us feel like family. We enjoyed their wine (Nobile) and their olive oil (best we've ever tasted). Alex had lots of information on touring the region and even bought our train tickets ahead of time for us. He also recommended a place to rent a car that was across the street from the train station in Chiusi (20 min. away). One day he took us to the market in Montepulciano to purchase ingredients for a dinner we prepared in our apartment at La Falconara, and on another occasion Alex prepared a special Italian dish for us for dinner that was simply delicious. Alex and Ingrid are such kind, caring and knowledgeable people, and alot of fun too! La Falconara is such a beautiful, peaceful place. For a wonderful Tuscan experience, we highly recommend La Falconara. You won't be disappointed!

Agriturismo La Crociona, Montalcino (Siena) Tuscany
My wife and I just returned from a 15 day vacation in Italy, 6 days of which we stayed at Agriturismo La Crociona in Montalcino. We can't say enough about how pleasant Barbara and her family made our stay. Our apartment was well appointed and spacious. The views of the countryside outstanding and Montalcino was a short 5-10 minute drive away. We used Agriturismo La Crociona as our base of operations for day trips to Florence, Siena, and many other Tuscany hill towns. Outstanding!

Cretaiole Agriturismo
If you want to really experience Tuscany, I highly recommend Cretaiole. This is a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, hosted by the gracious Moricciani family. Isabella, alone, makes this trip worthwhile. She is funny, smart and informative. She has managed every detail of Cretaiole to provide guests with a wonderful week of well thought out activites. However all activities are optional so you may also explore on your own as you wish. A stay at Cretaiole is a wonderful opportunity to learn about everyday life in Tuscany as well as the rich history of the area. And, of course, the food and wine!!!

Fonte Bertusi
Fonte Bertusi, Pienza, Tuscany Fonte Bertusi is in a perfect location with views to Monte Amiata and the crete, close to Pienza, which is the most perfect town in Tuscany. The accomodation is very comfortable, and the atmosphere of a Tuscan farmhouse has been retained. The owners could not be more warm and welcoming, and their cats and dog are also happy to make friends. There is a swimmimg pool, and lots of examples of interesting and querky art works in the apartments and gardens. It is very quiet and peaceful, an ideal location for walking, but also ideally placed for visting Montepulciano, Montalcino and the southern tuscan towns. This is a gem, and thoroughly recommended.

Chianti Region - Borgo Sicelle
In September, we had the pleasure of spending eight nights at the Borgo Sicelle in the Chianti region of Tuscany. It's a beautifully restored stone farmhouse that has been converted into separate apartments. We had an apartment on the upper floor with glorious views of the hills of Tuscany. The apartment had a kitchen, spacious bedroom, and nice bathroom, and the price was less than 70 euro per night.

There is a pool, a recreation room, lounge chairs and tables, wi-fi, and a washing machine available for use.

The hosts, Franco and Sylvie are very gracious and friendly. Franco presented us with a bottle of wine (Chianti, of course) on our arrival, and they had a notebook in the apartment with neighboring towns' market days, restaurant recommendations, and directions. Don't blink or you'll miss the Sicelle area, but it was close enough to the highway for easy day trips to Florence, Siena, and all the small hill towns in the Tuscany region.

There was an incredible restaurant that was less than three kilometers from the Borgo Sicelle - Osteria Alla Piazza, and there are many farms with direct sale of wine and olive oil in the area.

Le Casine di Castello, Castelmuzio
My wife, Lynn, and I just returned from our 2+ week visit to Tuscany. Our 1st week was spent at Le Casine di Castello in apartment Il Nido. Isa's skills as a host, decorator, and "travel guide" (her "red book" is wonderful) are outstanding. As SueBeth commented, Isa has thought of everything - if you forgot something, chances are Isa already has it in the apartment. There was enough coffee, tea, milk, snacks, not to mention their superb olive oil & rosso wine, to get you started for the first couple of days. I think our wine bottle had a hole in it because the wine disappeared much too quickly! The apartment is equipped with all the amenities you will need, including a washing machine. The outside courtyard was very secluded and was a perfect place to relax. When Isa found that our cell phone wasn't working, she let us borrow one of hers for emergency's. Le Casine di Castello is situated in the center of Castelmuzio and really gives you a sense of being more of a local than that of a tourist passing thru. We found staying in Il Nido/Castelmuzio both relaxing & invigorating; we were perfectly situated to explore all of the beautiful hill towns of the d'Orcia valley (we even managed to find San Quirico d'Orcia much to Carlo's surprise).

Based on amenities, hospitality, and location, I can't imagine staying anywhere else when visiting this area. Isa and her family made us feel like we belonged, and that is what separates Le Casine di Castello from the rest of the pack. You won't be disappointed.

Italian Farmstay near Abruzzi
I stayed at the Italian Farmstay for a while and loved every minute of it. As a hiker I found the surrounding mountains to be enchanting. At one point I hiked up to a castle that sits on a mountain above Sora to watch the sun rise. It was perfect. I even managed to find some rock climbing on the way. I highly recommend this place, and I feel that it has changed me. If you want more information go to http://www.italyfarmstay.com/

Cortona Villa Rental - Adriana 3 by Rentvillas.com
Overall: It was GREAT in every single way.

Enjoyed Most: The property was a few-minute drive from the walls of Cortona in a very peaceful and quiet setting.

Unpleasant Surprises: If I really have to pick something (it would be difficult), then it would be the fact that the online photos of the property were probably taken by a professional, and therefore were all taken from and ideal angle. The brushes were much taller by the time we got there in the middle of the summer, so you can't possibly see all those great shooting angles, but hey, who cares? The place was neat and I would go back there any time I could :)

Surrounding Area: Very close to the heart of Cortona. It was wonderful to take morning or especially evening walks in the town. We wanted to mingle with the locals and avoid tourists, so we took some relaxing evening walks. By that time tourists like we were, were already gone, so it was as close as an authentic socializing experience as possible.

Good advice for man with pretty girlfriends or wives: don't get too offended when you are strolling along in town and local men are whistling at (to) her. It's only natural for them to recognize natural beauty in the land of Michelangelo, Signorelli and Raffaello, which by the way, you have already found :). Just enjoy the moment and take it as a compliment. It is one.

Eating out was great. Some of the smaller trattorias were fairly reasonable in pricing and tipping was also easy, since the surcharge was already added to the bill at all times (by the way, this surcharge was also more reasonable and often less then in the US). We travelled a lot to Assisi, Florence, Siena, Montalcino, and Montepulciano.

Nearby Events or Locales: Cortona "downtown" was the closest. We always drove up to the walls, parked the car, and kept on lingering around until the last trattorias closed.

Tips or Restaurants: Definitely Trattoria Dardano. On our first day, we asked our hosts which their favorite "tourist-free" restaurant was with real local food for mostly locals. Fernando walked down with us to Trattoria Dardano. It is a very charming, clean place with a great [INVALID]ion of food. By the way: "great [INVALID]ion" refers to the variety/quality of food, not the countless number of pages on a menu, like in Chinese and Mexican restaurants in the USA.

We tried other Restaurants, too, but this was the absolute winner. The "house specialty of mixed appetizers" is the best for antipasti. It was so easy to fall in love with all of them. The atmosphere was just naturally Tuscan. We ate there twice and I wish there was a chance to teletransport ourselves to Cortona on Friday nights to enjoy more of thier hospitality along with their wild boar specialties.

Directions: We drove to the keyholder family's home. The GPS took us to the town walls and we parked our car, then we showed the first local the name of the keyholder for the villa. He saw Fernando's name and lead us to the right home. By the way, Fernando's family, Giovanna and Elisabetta, were super nice ALL THE TIME. But not fake nice with artificial smiles[INVALID]just simply naturally nice and caring. They even helped us call our families back in Hungary from their own home when we had problems with our phone. They didn't speak Hungarian and we didn't speak Italian, so it was quite a funny experience[INVALID]but once again, the whole family was super nice all way long! They treated my wife and I like family and it is definitely not something that we would ever forget. They are just very hard-working, naturally nice people.

Check In Out: We had difficulties getting to Cortona on time, but they were all very understanding and had absolutely no problems with it, whatsoever...

Cortona Villa Rental - Adriana 3 by Rentvillas.com
Ok! I did not have time to skim through what I wrote to make sure that it would actually make sense, so here we go:

I have only one add-on: We booked our honeymoon with Rentvillas.com. They gave us directions to the owner's home, which was located inside the walls of Cortona. Fernando and his family owned and took care of the villa we stayed in...

...about the photos: next time I will have to go there with an SLR to be able to take similar, high-quality pictures as Rentvilla.com's photographer did :)

Cretiaole Pienza, Italy
"Want to touch the heart of Tuscany?" We first wrote those words in July 2006. It was our third trip to Italy, but our first time at Cretaiole with Isabella, Carlo, Luciano and the Moricciani family. July 2011 found us on our fifth trip to Italy and our third visit to Cretaiole. This time our two daughters and sons-in-law joined us.

Cretaiole is a 14th century farmhouse, with hundreds of olive trees, a vineyard, and fields of wheat all nestled in the Val d'Orcia surround by hills. Cretaiole's accommodations are very clean, quite comfortable and located in the movie set beauty of the Tuscan countryside. In fact, the monastery scenes of the English Patient were shot just ten minutes from Cretaiole.

Isabella and her family provide a person-to-person, heart to heart experience. You can visit Rome, Florence, and Venice and never get close to Italy. You will at Cretaiole.

Isabella is a born concierge who could work in the finest hotels. She greets and gets to know all of her guests, and she knows and shares the treasures of the valley. She has compiled a 3" thick binder of activities, sites and restaurants for each apartment. In addition, she offers an itinerary of events that you might want to do during your stay. We followed her advice. Among other things, we visited and had lunch at a working farm and at a winery near Cretaiole, made pasta with Isabella, and learned a considerable amount about olive oil from Carlo, Isabella's husband. Luciano - the patriarch - is a special treat. Although he does not speak English, he communicates as he shares his farm and family.

Want to touch the heart of Tuscany? Cretaiole. We love it. So will you!

Tuscany holiday
An incredible week at Cassina Valloreci! The setting was exquisite, pastoral and peaceful with all of the simple ammenities as well as a lovely pool overlooking the Tuscan hills. A wonderful relaxing counterpoint placed between our vacation in hectic Rome and culture filled Firenze. Access to so many beautiful and historic places - hill towns in Tuscany and Umbria, like the picturesque ancient town of Petroio visible across the valley, lovely restaurants where locals gather, olive production, wine tasting and on and on. Angelo was the perfect host, with a great sense of humor, who went out of his way to help when needed, but stayed very much in the background so that we felt we were on our own private adventure. Grazie - not to be missed! Cindy and Ed

Umbria (Orvieto)

Via piana, Italy. Amazing!
I recently stayed at an amazing bed and breakfast located between Rome an Naples. It was a small part of my rtw trip but made a large impression. The rural atmosphere was a great change of pace and beautiful surroundings. We went to the cheesemaker, a hike to lucerne waterfall, and the weekly market to get fresh food. Even with the rural atmosphere there was still wi-fi in the communal kitchen, and the host Anna even helped me with my italian! Highly recommended, www.italycountrystay.com

Agriturismo Frallarenza
Our stay at Frallarenza was spectacular. Accommodations were superb. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Our children enjoyed playing in the pool and the ping pong table. We spent time in Orvieto during the day and relaxed at Frallarenza at night. Francesco and Serena were excellent hosts. We took a cooking class and found it very enjoyable! We highly recommend Frallarenza!

Cretaiole
We had an amazing, long anticipated trip to Italy in late June/early July. I enjoyed every place we visited but we really felt at home in Pienza at Cretaiole. We immersed ourselves in the culture and had a chance to meet and get to know the wonderful people who live there. I would encourage anyone who wants a true taste of Tuscan life and the Italian people to visit Cretaiole! PS. The wine and food are home grown and absolutely delicious!

Tuscan b&b review
Casina Valloreci in between Petroio and Castelmuzio - not to be missed. It was seamless, from the residence to the agri-tourism, to the small villages and even the larger city of Siena, centrally located in southern Tuscany, its hosts are great, the pool is refreshing, and the stay was a week of relief from the stress of being s NY'er!

At Agriturismo Cretaiole near Pienza, Italy is where Tuscan views and heartwarming people unite to experience the "real" Italy. Every aspect of our stay at Cretaiole was wonderful. Tuscany
When the word "hostess" was created, Isabella was who they were thinking of. I have never stayed anywhere else in the world where such attention to detail is taken. Everything that is done is all about making sure all the guests of the various properties have the perfect Tuscany experience. Everything from your gift of home grown bottles of wine and olive oil, (as well as all the wine they share with you at meals) to the think notebook of everything you would need to know about the area you are in, places to go, things to do, how to get around, places to eat (and not eat), etc... Isabella is a brilliant business woman, but even more so, a friend from the moment you meet. Carlo, her husband, and great cook, farmer, does not speak very much English, but his generous, fun loving spirit breaks all boundaries of language, Carlo's parents have tremendous Tuscan lifestyle lessons. They all are wonderful cooks. I could gush on and on, but you get the idea that this family makes you their family. The only thing I would have done differently was that I would have participated in more of the planned activities. We learned that Isa knows best! Room Tip: If you like "community" then stay at the main property. If you like to be more secluded, ask to stay at Il Cielo.

Abruzzi National Park
My stay at Via Piana (http://www.italycountrystay.com/index.html) in Pescosolido has been wonderful. This rustic B & B is located at the edge of the Abruzzi National Park in the mountainous Italian countryside. It's a perfect way to experience a non-touristic side of Italy but still easily accessible via a short (2 hours) and inexpensive (5 €) bus from Rome. There's no need for a car since there's a small grocery store five minutes up the road and frequent buses to and from Sora. Also, Anna, the sweet and helpful manager, is happy to pick-up and drop-off guests from the bus station in Sora on days of their arrival and departure. Activities include hiking to a castle ruin and a nearby waterfall, horseback riding, visiting a cheese-making shepherd, and wandering through the weekly open-air market in downtown Sora.

Guests have access to a charming kitchen and common room with an old pizza oven, which is great for meeting guests from all over and cooking with the delicious, local produce. The area is famous for truffles. I've also been buying incredible homemade wine and olive oil from the welcoming neighbors. Via Piana's rooms are clean and comfortable with stunning views. There's also free WiFi.

Cortona, City Center
Not sure if this is the place, but this was a great find for part of our mini tour of Italy.

Cortona is a wonderful town, full of charming people, history and incredible buildings. We stayed here (as a base) for 5 nights in what was a lovely, apartment overlooking the main Piazza.

The apartment was perfect for us as there were 4 of us, My husband and his two sisters. The apartment had a large bedroom and two singles (plus another on a separate floor). The welcome though was the best we had in Italy.

The owners could not speak any English, (and we little Italian) but they had a friend along to translate for them. They were so excited to show us around and all the refurbishments the property had. They welcomed us with a plate of home made cantucci cookies, a bottle of Vin Santo, a huge bowl of local fruit and, Mario was very keen that we had a bottle of his (?) wine.

Apartments in Cortona are usually for a week, so finding they offered this for shorter periods suited our plans extremely well. (www.tuscancharm.co.uk)

We explored Cortona, its museums, lovely restaurants and took a cooking class (arranged by the owners) which was great fun. Other trips included a day out to Pienza (wonderful) and a winery in Montepulciano.

Emilia Romagna: Ferrara: Delizia d'Este
Fellow travelers, I recommend that you follow Rick's tenet and travel to a "backdoor" that is, to an area of Italy not covered in Rick's books. During the last week of May 2011 we spent 6 nights at the Delizia d'Este Agriturismo just outside the city of Ferrara. This was not our first stay in an agriturismo, but it was definitely the best. The owner Roberta has travelled extensively and has worked very hard to build a wonderful, sustainable, (solar panels, green building materials, eco friendly lighting and ac in the rooms, etc), base to enjoy all the delights that the region has to offer. Our room was a cool oasis to return to after the warm days spent exploring the surrounding countryside, historic cities and villages. Beautifully decorated with all the comforts you could imagine, air conditioning, or for the cooler evenings and mornings screens on the windows - a rarity in our travels. A mini-bar sized fridge was a nice addition, and a bonus was the outdoor second story sundeck with a refreshing jacuzzi. The buffet breakfast was bountiful, with fresh eggs, organic strawberries from the farm and buffalo milk yoghurt, as highlights. When I made the reservation I inquired about gluten free items, and Roberta provided wonderful options for me. It was delightful to eat our breakfast outside under the loggia when the weather was warm. Our room and all the public areas were kept very clean and tidy by Roberta's staff, most especially the hard working Donatella. For anyone who might be traveling with their dog, Roberta has also created an oasis for dogs! It is the basis of her agriturismo, but more than that it is her passion and it shows. The city of Ferrara proclaims itself a bicycle city, and the entire region of Ferrara is covered with a huge network of cycling routes and dedicated cycling paths, some of which link up to long distance cycling routes. One day we took advantage of the bicycles that are available at the agriturismo and had a memorable morning cycling along the banks of the Po river, leaving the path to go down to explore little villages. The owner Roberta speaks fluent English, (we speak halting Italian) and she went out of her way to ensure a wonderful experience for us. She provided English language brochures, and excellent recommendations for dining out in the city of Ferrara and the nearby village of Francolino. She suggested day trips for us that led us to abandon our own itinerary and become immersed in the local history, art and culture. She even provided detailed directions from Malpensa airport to Ferrara! She was so pleased to welcome us as her first guests from the U.S., and hopes that more Americans will visit. We highly recommend it and we will definitely be returning!

Oasi Battifoglia, Assisi, Umbria
My family and I were lucky enough to travel through Europe during May and June of this year. We are 2 parents and 2 children(9 and 5). Rick's advice saved us lots of time (not waiting in crazy lines) and provided us with many excellent restaurants to enjoy. For this we are thankful. One of our favourite places that we visited in Italy was an agriturismo called Oasi Battifoglia. The owners were so friendly, I felt a little teary-eyed when leaving. The scenery takes your breath away as the farm is nestled in a valley surrounded by fields of olive trees and hills. The price is very reasonable and the owners are very generous. As a family, we like less touristy and more authentic. This is a place where other Italians go for their holidays. We stayed in our own apartment (clean, well-stocked & 2 bathrooms) located on the corner of the main farmhouse in between the kitchen and the refreshing outdoor swimming pool. The food was outstanding and is fresh from the farm! We lost track of how many courses were served during our first meal at Livia's farmhouse kitchen. There were 2 pasta courses and truffles were involved. She also provided us with a delicious breakfast every morning. Although this isn't on Rick's radar-it should be! We give this cozy , friendly gem top marks. www.oasibattifoglia.com

Cretaiole Agriturismo, Pienza, Italy
There are many reviews of the wonderful times people have had at Cretaiole Agriturismo near Pienza, Tuscany. So I won't repeat much of what has been mentioned already. Traveling alone on my first trip to Italy for my 65th birthday, I was a bit apprehensive, but I needn't have been. Il Pollaio, my apartment and home for three weeks, provided all I needed for comfort and joy. Each morning I woke to sunshine streaming in to welcome me to a new day. The memories are many, but those that remain the strongest are: I never locked my apartment door; it felt extremely safe and home-like at Cretaiole. Walking alone at night in Pienza felt very peaceful, too. Isabella is a gem. She was very concerned when I became ill with bronchitis. She arranged visits to the doctor in Pienza and translated my medications & instructions (the doctor didn't speak English). She also helped track down my luggage the airlines lost and was extremely helpful in many other ways. Nighttime socializing with Luciano and other guests with his homemade grappa and vin santo in the veranda felt like spending time with friends. Love the twinkle in that man's eyes! The Hermitage tour and Isa's telling of how Luciano and his son, Carlo, [INVALID]d Cretaiole is not to be missed. Location! Fabulous view of Pienza, just a short drive away, and near many intriguing hill-top towns. Tuscan food and wine are a food lover's dream. Particularly the tomatoes and salad makings from the Cretaiole garden; Luciano's gifts of fresh eggs and ricotta; Carlo's cooking their homemade sausage and ribs over a log fire for the Pici dinner; and the Moriciani family wine and olive oil (my only regret was not leaving enough space in my luggage to bring some home). Three weeks wasn't enough to sample all the fabulous food and wine the area has to offer. I enjoyed my time at Cretaiole so much, I made a return two-week reservation in the same apartment for September 2012. This time my husband will be joining me on what feels like a return to my Italian home.

Selva Val Gardena, Dolomites
We stayed only for a few nights off season at Tubla in Selva Val Gardena in the Dolomites, and our hosts made us feel right at home despite some communication difficulties. In this part of Italy they speak and cater to more German speaking folks. But in a month long trip we had our most memorable night with our host Heinrich and some other guests who were staying. We hiked to his Alpine hut where he treated us to local music, schnapps, wine, speck and bread while telling storys our new friends were too embarrassed to translate! The accomodations were really reasonable, the breakfast was good, the views were fantastic as well!

Casina Valloreci - Trequanda
If you read our friend's review of Casina Valloreci, I'm the one who burst into tears. It is almost impossible to put into words how idyllic Casina Valloreci is – everything about our stay there exceeded my wildest dreams – and I had dreamed of going to Tuscany for a long time! Every direction you look is a picture-perfect view of the Tuscan countryside. And Casina Valloreci itself is quite simply paradise on earth – everything and more you could possibly imagine for a stay in Tuscany. Angelo and Elena are the most gracious and thoughtful hosts, and made us feel so welcome and at home. The two apartments are very lovely and extremely comfortable. The surrounding grounds are unbelievably beautiful – with so many inviting areas to relax or swim or enjoy a meal or a glass of wine.

There are several Tuscan towns such as Siena, Montepulciano, and Cortona that are easy day trips. Plus there are several very close-by small hilltop towns that are less touristy and full of charm and delicious places to eat.

When it came time for us leave Casina Valloreci and move on to the next leg of our trip, I must admit I cried again – because I didn't want to leave. For my husband and I it is not a matter of if we make it back to Casina Valloreci, we will be back – because I left a piece of my heart there.

AGRITURISMO GUARDASTELLE - San Gimignano, Italy
Not recommended by RS but it should be! Location is good and is a good base camp for Tuscany day driving trips, such as Volterra (25 minutes), Certaldo (20 minutes), Monteriggioni (25 minutes), Firenze (1 hour), Siena (45 minutes). It is only a 20 minute walk to San Gimignano where there are lots of sightseeing, shopping, restaurants, and gelato. The very reasonably priced en-suite rooms are clean, spotless, and nicely decorated with a Tuscan charm. They also have nicely appointed apartments that you may rent for a week or longer. Agriturismo Guardastelle is a family estate and wine/oil producer that sits on top of a hill overlooking beautiful landscaped acreage which is surrounded by delightful gardens, grape vineyards, olive groves, Tuscany rolling hills, beautiful swimming pool and a gorgeous scenic view of the town of San Gimignano. The views are breath-taking and could be found in magazines like Travel+Leisure! Susanna and Fausto are the owners who are very friendly and delightful hosts and eager to please. They speak very good English. They make you feel special and are very appreciative for your business. They were very helpful and informative in answering all of our many questions. Roberta, a very competent and funny staff member, provides a wonderful breakfast with many delicious options such as egg, parma ham, salami, cheese, yogurt, fruit, bread/rolls, pastry, butter/jam, juice, cereal, coffee, tea, milk, etc. This is free for B&B customers and optional for apartment customers. They provide food alternatives for people who are celiacs, lactose-intolerant, etc. They provide a fantastic wine/oil tasting and wine tours of their vineyards. Part of the wine/oil tasting is a choice of several meal options and multiple samples of their great wines and olive oils. Check this place out in Trip Advisor because it is highly recommended. Cretaiole di Luciano Moricciani near Pienza in Val d'Orcia
We stayed at Cretaiole (http://www.cretaiole.it/index.en.php) for one week with our four children (ages 9 to 18) in June 2011, and all of us had a wonderful time. We rented the La Casa del Contadino apartment, which included three bedrooms and two full bathrooms. The kitchen and living area were very spacious and clean.

Our original intention was to use this lodging with the intention of making it a home base for day trips to Assisi, Florence, and Pisa.

We are so happy we modified our plans at the beginning of the week to relax and enjoy all of the wonderful things there are to do in and around Pienza. We did make one day trip to Sienna (a guided tour that was included with the lodging). But the rest of the week was spent enjoying the Val d'Orcia region: *Walks *Visits to many of the nearby towns *A cooking class at a local restaurant *A contrada street dinner. *A tour of a wonderful organic farm where everyone made their own pizza with fresh ingredients right from the farm. We ate our creations on a beautiful, shady outdoor veranda overlooking the valley.

There was also plenty of enjoyable time hanging around Cretaiole with the other guests, which included two other families.

The owners of Cretaiole are the most gracious of hosts. They welcomed us to their own farm, on which they live, provided a wealth of suggestions for things to see and places to eat in the Orcia valley, and every evening the family patriarch, Luciano, would stop by the lodging to visit, usually carrying some bottles of the farm's wine to share.

La Frallarenza--Umbria
Our stay at La Frallarenza Agriturismo could best be described as terrific. The farm is a hillside setting of vineyards and olive groves, nourished with great care and obvious pride by Francesco and Serena de Ninno. The building that had our "apartment" on the top floor was hard to date[INVALID]seemingly old but with every modern amenity. A second, smaller apartment was beneath ours, and our hosts lived on the ground floor[INVALID]but because of the slope, each had ground level porches and patios. Situated just a few kilometers from Allerona, the farm seemed quiet and rural nonetheless. We enjoyed the sparkling pool, the bocci games, outdoor ping- pong and the shady spots to sip wine or read. Although there is no restaurant on the premises, Serena is an accomplished chef. A delicious pasta dish, breakfast pastry and a huge bowl of cherries from the farm were part of our welcome. We intended to enjoy the many restaurants in Orvieto and other nearby towns (which we did to some extent) but the temptation to grill under the olive tress overtook us twice. It was lovely! Our stay at La Frallarenza ranks as one of our all time great vacation. The agriturismo is perfectly located, graciously hosted and the ideal spot for our family of seven (a couple in our sixties with three adult children, one son-in-law and a baby grandson) to get to know Italy and reconnect with each other.

Borgo Tranquilitta - Castiglion Fiorentino
Borgo Tranquilitta was a perfect place for us. Set above the valley near Castiglion Fiorentino, we had 10 perfect days of relaxation and touring.

THis is a little old village - probably 400 years or so, with three small cottages. We had two of these and the third had a family from Belgium staying for just 4 days. each has 2 bedrooms (the third cottage had 3 bedrooms)

The rooms were clean and comfortable and the pool was great as was the sunsets each evening.

It was a little hard to find, as it is just off a main road and a little way up. but once we arrived, we were satisfied we had chosen the right place.

THe owners met us and greeted us warmly, giving lots of advice on where to shop, eat and about some of the local festivals.

We tended to go out from here every other day. Visiting a couple of local wineries and the towns of Cortona, Arezzo and Pienza (perfect).

La Falconara - Montepulciano - Tuscany
We returned to our favourite Tuscan agriturismo this year and brought friends with us for their first visit to Italy. The agriturismo is called LaFalconara and the four of us think of it as our home in Italy. The amazing hosts, Alex and Ingrid, will make you feel that you have known them all your lives. They are extremely knowledgeable about the area, can give you great advice and even have a library of travel books you can borrow. Alex has been described as a 'renaissance' man and we love to sit and talk with him on a wide range of topics. Ingrid is always the gracious hostess who will make you feel that you are a guest in her home. You will have access to good wines and great knowledge about them as Alex is a partner in an award-winning local winery as well. LaFalconara is just minutes from the north end of Montepulciano and also convenient to a small town called Acquaviva. This location is very central and allows easy day trips to San Gimignano, Siena, Pienza, Assisi, Orvieto and Civita di Bagnoregio among others. We have stayed in several other Tuscan agriturismos and these apartments are by far the best. There are only 3 on the ground level with Alex and Ingrid living upstairs. Each apartment is spacious, nicely furnished and have well equipped kitchens, even dishwashers. There is a pool and the view is what you see in those fabulous coffee table books. You sit with olive groves on one side and vineyards on the other and have an expansive view across the valley to Cortona. Although we enjoyed other Tuscan agriturismos (including one that gets many recommendations) this is the only one we have returned to and would again. On our first departure we were told "you always have a home in Tuscany"........ the first words Alex said on our return were "Welcome home". Perhaps that will give you a better idea of how wonderful a place this is to stay than any words we could write. If you have any specific questions or want more info we would be happy to provide it. Casina Valloreci - Tuscany
My wife and I spent a week at Casina Valloreci with one of our closest couple friends. We had hustled and bustled through Rome and Florence and soon were headed to Cinque Terre and Milan. The week in at Casina Valloreci was definitely the highlight of the places we stayed and offered a very necessary respite from the rest of our tour.

Angelo was the perfect host. He greeted us when we first arrived as though we were friends he had not seen in a long time. The accommodations, the grounds and the views from the hillside pool area and gazebo were breath taking. It was clear that Angelo and his sister Elena had taken much care, thought, time and expense to create such a beautiful and inviting atmosphere. The wife of the couple we were traveling with burst out in tears after Angelo's tour of the Casina. They had been dreaming about this vacation for a long, long time. She said it surpassed any expectation or dream she had, to which Angelo replied "you must embrace me," as he gave her a hug.

Our mornings (albeit late mornings) were spent touring some of the small Tuscan towns nearby, afternoons at the pool cooling off (June is rather warm) and evenings eating at one of the nearby (but not too close) restaurants or preparing our own Italian feast in the outdoor kitchen.

If we ever make it back to Italy, our first, and maybe only reservation, will be at Casina Valloreci. And this time we will be going back to see a dear friend.

Cheese Shepard, Italy farmstay
In the beautiful Lazio region of Italy, I visted a farmstay for agritourism... but really, eating-tourism. Many people come to Italy to eat, so there is no shame in admiting that, and I think it is noble to investigate where all the delicious food comes from.

In my noble investigations, I made the sacrfice to wake up for a 5 AM field trip to see how pecorino and ricotta cheese is made- the old fashioned way, which is not easy to find these days. From our farmstay up in the hills from Sora, our host Antonello drove us further up the mountains to a village called Pescosolido. We then commenced a sunrise hike through even more hills. It was steep, but the air smelled of mint and other sweet herbs, which made me very curious about the taste of this cheese.

When we arrived, the shepards were preparing to take the sheep to the top of the mountain to graze. The head shepard, Enzo -who makes the cheese- was waiting with his wife to receive us and show us the magic.

They began with fresh sheeps' milk in a giant antique-looking kettle over a little wood fire, and then demonstrated the addition of rennet, which creates curds. We watched Enzo stir it carefully with a specially prepared branch. He gave us cups of whey and samples of ricotta and olive oil on bread, which made for a charming mountaintop breakfast. My eyes soon wandered over to the adorable lambs, one of whom was watching me as curiuosly as I was watching it.

Once the curds were ready, I finally had a chance to get my hands on some cheese. It was not ready to eat yet, though. After washing up, I got the chance to help mould )give form - hence formaggio) the just-cooked pecorino cheese. You must squeeze all the liquid out of it, which requires a lot of pressing and turning in special straining baskets.

After we finished forming the pecorino rounds, it was time to °recook° the ricotta, which is made from the curds that remain after the pecorino has come from the milk. They hoisted the kettle back over the fire and stired the milk and curds again until the creamy ricotta was ready to be spooned into bowls like delicious little clouds.

Afterwards, I took the opportunity to purchase just about everything, except for the fresh ricotta, which cannot be taken travelling the way pecorino, olive oil, and smoked ricotta can. Luckily, Antonello bought some of that ricotta, and served it to us with dinner. His mother Maria used some of it in an amazing pizza-focaccia-sandwhich type creation with cabbage, onions, and herbs that was one of my favorite gastronomic experiences in Italy, though it was just one of the primi in one of many amazing feasts I had there.

You can find this place about 2 hours south of Rome by bus or car. www.italyfarmstay.com

Via Piana in Lazio/Abruzzo
I came back! The peace and beauty of this little place were so memorable that I made sure this was the first place I stopped upon my return to Italy. Everything I liked about it before still holds true: the gorgeous steep mountains, the cool evenings with bright bright stars, and the dear hearts of the people there (especially the manager, Anna). Though you can feel the authentic rustic charm, the rooms are all newly-renovated, including a beautiful new ensuite room. I was also delighted to discover a new rooftop terrace with plenty of shade for afternoon reading.

Breakfast is offerred for 1 euro, but guests are free to use the kitchen to prepare lunch and dinner. Another thing I enjoyed this time were the fresh herbs (basil, thyme, mint, rosmary, parsley, and more) from the garden which I was able to use my cooking. And I LOVE eating the smoked ricotta and pecorino made by the local shepherd (the description below is very good).

If you enjoy the outdoors, the proximity to Abruzzo National Park is also an advantage. There are two beautiful lakes not far away (one in Abruzzo, one in another park). I went on several hikes (lots of climbing) both times I was here, and most recently enjoyed the icy-cold waterfall hike.

Via Piana is in the heart of the Italy and very easy to reach. I flew into Rome each time, and it's only a two hour bus ride from there (and only two hours from Naples if you're coming from the south). Once you get here, you can find peace and tranquility, or challenge and adventure...whatever you desire. I heartily recommend it! (Go to ItalyCountryStay.com)

Frallarenza
Frallarenza Agriturismo in Umbria Our ten day stay with Serena, Francesco, and Giorgio was undoubtedly the high light of a 21 day visit to Italy. It is situated perfectly between the hill towns outside Ficulle near Orvieto. Accommodations are so comfortable and clean and no better hosts could be had. We highly recommend.

Il Limoneto, Acireale, Sicily
We have loved our two stays at Il Limoneto for numerous reasons, but here are the basics. The location is great, with easy access from Catania's airport. There are plenty of day trips to choose from, and while we were able to explore principal attractions (Taormina, Piazza Armerina, and Mt. Etna), there are great little nearby towns, too. Il Limoneto provides plenty of relaxation on its own, if you simply want to stay local. The Lapi family, your hosts, are friendly, helpful and genuine. The accomodations are comfortable, clean, and well-equipped, a perfect setting for our honeymoon, and later, for our family. Our biggest praise of all is our desire to return again and again to this lovely spot which has become so dear to us.

Casa Moricciani
The Moricciani family has several venues for travelers seeking the ultimate Tuscan experience, including Cretaiole and their newest venue, Casa Moricciani. It was here we experienced with another couple a delicious Tuscan meal prepared before our eyes by Chef Manuele, a well-known Tuscan chef from the region. This charming villa is located in a small quaint Tuscan hill town with a spectatular view of the Val D'orcia, and a perfect venue to share with other couple(s) for an extended stay in the heart of Tuscany's wine region. The dinner is one of many value added opportunities offered by the Moricciani family. By far the best wow moment of our May 2011 4-week trip to Italy.

Agriturismo Cretaiole near Pienza in Tuscany
Our visit to Cretaiole was awesome and exceeded all our expectations! The apartment was immaculate and well furnished. We easily made breakfast, snacks and one dinner with food from both the farm and the COOP in town. The property of the farm itself was unbelievable in beauty. It was an oasis to return to each afternoon after exploring Tuscany. It was a true experience of Tuscany! But the real charm of this place was Isabella and her family = her father in law Luciano who bought Cretaiole years ago and her husband Carlo. Isabella shared Tuscany with you in the most personal way so you felt after a week that you had a small understanding of what this remarkable part of Italy was like. There were well organized travel notebooks in all apartments to guide your explorations. There were many activities, some free and some a small charge, available to guests every week. Freebies includes a nature walk; guided tour of Etruscian ruins; pici (pasta) making and an Italian dinner; tour of a working Tuscan farm with wine, cheese, and meat tasting; tour of Siena; and olive oil tasting class. Isabella encouraged all of us to explore Tuscany the week we were at Cretaiole which we did!. Almost all the guests spent at least one day just hanging out at Cretaiole with the lovely yard with relaxing chairs (plenty for everyone=there were about 16 people at the agritourismo for the week), absorbing the views of Tuscan rolling hills, walking the 3 km trail across the hillside into Pienza, a wonderful Tuscan town, walking the vineyards, olive grove, and vegetable garden; or hiking to the ruins of a small chapel. You can do as much as you want with the other guests or do your own thing. From the organized activity list, We also did a tour and dinner at a local monastery, a tour and tasting at a local vineyard. We explored everyday, taking in local markets, hill towns, lots of Italian food and lots of gelato, everyday gelato! The week was leisurely yet full of fun and exploration because we didn't go far each day but took the time to walk and absorb. This was our first trip to Italy and we chose not to do the tourist hot spots in the cities but rather to experience Tuscany from a homebase at Cretaiole. It was the perfect decision!!! Isabella and her family are wonderful and give you an experience of a lifetime in a place you will never forget.

Agriturismo Cretaiole, Pienza, Tuscany
We stayed at Il Cretaiole the last week of May so this posting is a little late. We traveled with friends sharing the connected rooms L'ovile and Il Granaio. We concur with all of the glowing endorsements posted throughout this site. We tried thinking of some new superlatives but found it difficult because all of the good words were used up. One thing that we really appreciated was the fact that Isa and family live about a block from downtown Pienza which is a short ride from the farmhouse. She suggested that we park in her driveway which was perfect. We never had to worry about ZTL's or parking tickets and we passed by a convenient food co-op store when returning to our car. What the heck. Let's mention it once again. Isa, Carlo and Luciano are wonderful people who are committed to their guests comfort and happiness. Il Cretaiole was the jewel of our vacation.

Staying at Cretaiole in Pienza is a wonderful experience. If you want to experience and explore the area of Tuscany, the Moricciani family makes it easy. Getting together with the Moricciani family and the other guests at Cretaiole creates a wonderfully rich and warm Tuscan experience.

Agriturismo Marciano, Siena
I agree, this was a wonderful place to stay, just outside Siena. The only down side is the narrow road to get there! We didn't want to drive it at night, which meant taking a taxi into Siena for dinner on the nights we didn't eat with our hosts. Nadia is a fantastic cook; their wines were excellent. Our room was quiet with a gorgeous view. It was one of our most enjoyable stays in Italy.

Italy Farm Stay Abruzzo
We just returned from a week at Italy Farm Stay in Abruzzo Region. We chose it because of the comments here and I agree with all of them. The owners are friendly, the area and activities were perfect. The only downsides were the meals as they were almost all vegetables from the farm which is great, but don't expect homemade pastas, lasagna, pizza, desserts, etc. Secondly, the grounds were for farming, not landscaped for guests. The porch was shared by all, including volunteers at the farm, so it was hard to find a quiet place to relax. So depending what you're looking for, those may not be a downside for you. Otherwise, we have wonderful memories from there!

Casa Moricciani - Luxury villa owned/managed by Isabella of Cretaiole
We just stayed for a week at Casa Moricciani. My husband and I went with another couple. We wanted a luxury stay that was affordable and would give each couple a comfortable bedroom with private bath. All of us REALLY enjoy great food, good wine, and having fun together in a beautiful spot where we have the choice to putter in the kitchen making fab meals with local products or going out to restaurants. Casa Moricciani was more than perfect for what we wanted. We stayed in the downstairs apartment, Primo Mobile, because it had a nice large, country kitchen large enough to cook and dine in it, with french doors opening onto the patio for outdoor dining. We also enjoyed sitting in the gorgeous living room with windows overlooking the valley onto the mountain in the distance. Everything you could wish for was provided in the villa. Any kind of need we had was met, in English, by Isabella: cooking classes, winery visits, restaurant recommendations and reservations, hikes, chanting monks, more wine for the cantina, you name it, if we needed it or wanted it, Isabella provided the assistance. She (and her husband, Carlo, too) are absolutely amazing!!!!

The yard and patio area, and the outside "dipping" pool fed by a fountain are so beautiful and the view from every part of the yard and the house is incredible. I have seen the photos on their website (www.casamoricciani.com) and found reality to be even more beautiful than the photos.

Our biggest problem was making the decision to leave the villa to go do other things during the day we wanted to luxuriate there and do nothing but enjoy its ambiance. So, it was always such a pleasure to come back at the end of the day.

We really depended on Isabella for suggestions regarding what to do/where to go/what to see/how to get there/. She is so knowledgeable about the area and she helped us to identify the things that were just right for us! That kind of service you cannot find in a guide book!

We are already planning to return if not this fall, then certainly next year! We cannot give a rating high enough to convey our satisfaction with our stay at Casa Moricciani!

Tuscany, Casina Valloreci
On a four week trip to Italy we fortunately spent one week at Casina Valloreci in Tuscany. It was a wonderful way to get away from crowds and have a true country style vacation. Angelo, our host, was great and seemed to anticipate our every need. It was a super way to get a vacation from your vacation! Because it its central location, the most attractive hill-towns are within easy reach. This is a true gem!

Aguriturismo Podere Marcampo near Volterra, Tuscany
This place is fantastic. The location and scenery is a fantasy of the Tuscan Hills, the hosting family are wonderful, and the day trips to surrounding sights all within easy reach. If you are looking for a quiet, peaceful, ideallic place to spend a few days, a week, or more. You cannot do better. Genuino and his wife have a wonderful ristorante in Volterra just a few kilometers away that has incredible food and ambiance. We stayed 6 nights and were begging to be taken on as help in the vineyards when our time to leave arrived.

Tuscany
My husband and I recently spent almost a week at Casina Valloreci. I would echo the praise of others on this blog. In fact, it was previous comments on this site that led us to this lovely agriturismo. We so enjoyed our stay there, it was difficult to leave! The little stone house was perfect, the gardens, the pristine pool, the location---all just lovely. If you are seeking a tranquil hideaway in the near vicinity of most Tuscan hill towns--look no further. And, Angelo is the perfect host.

Tuscany
Agriturismo Marciano - Siena We loved our stay at this winery. The rooms are charming, the hosts are great and their optional dinners are out of this world. We stayed 4 nights and they offered dinner twice. Each course comes with a different wine from their winery. It was the best food we had in 3 weeks in Italy. They are located about 10 minutes from the walls in Siena, so the location is great too. Check them out on Trip Advisor.

LEVANTO, 5 min from Cinque Terre
If you are a traveller that likes to stay "far from the madding crowd", perhaps you would enjoy the tranquil and bucolic location of Erba Persa Agriturismo in Levanto, Italy, the first town north of the Cinque Terre. As picturesque and unique as the five villages are, perched precariously upon steep mountain sides that cascade to the sea, THEY ARE CROWDED WITH TOURISTS! Just a few minutes north by train and you are in the small quiet town of Levanto, which wraps itself around a beautiful bay. Unlike the CT, Levanto does not have the touristy feel, but rather that of an everyday place in a beautiful setting. Just a short walk from the city center sits Erba Persa, an old villa, with olive orchards, vegetable gardens, and animals. One of the things I liked best were the owners, Grazia and Claudio. They have to be some of the nicest people in the whole world. So kind and so genuine. Breakfast was generous, and included pastries, cheese, fresh fruit and organic yogurt. Nothing ostentatious here, just a warm feeling, and reasonably priced. We enjoyed our stay very much. http://www.erbapersa.it/

Umbria - Agriturismo Frallarenza
My husband and I also stayed at Agriturismo Frallarenza for a couple days near Allerona during the last week of May 2011. We found it to be heaven in Tuscany, and a perfect resting place after traveling up and down in Italy. I felt like this was the highlight of our Italian vacation from Rome, Florence, Naples and Umbria was our favorite place to stay. We found new friends with Francisco and Serena, the most kind and accomodating stay we have ever experienced - they were helpful in recommendations and helping us get around town. We stayed in the smaller apartment which was beautifully decorated with Serena's crafts of pottery, which are also available to purchase - the hooks, the plates, almost everything you see has her unique pottery. It's absolutely gorgeous and I took a plate and bowl home to remember her. Francisco and Serena also stocked the kitchen with a couple of goodies - eggs, water, beer (Birra - the Italian kind), juice and milk, and assortment of cookies and breads in the pantry along with their homemade jams. Plus, the espresso machine that is so handy to use everyday. Serena made dinner for our first - homemade lasagna and tarts for breakfast and lovely profiteroles to enjoy as snacks. You will never go hungry if Serena is cooking for you. They have a friendly and loveable dog named Gigi, she loves a good belly rub. I took the cooking class with Serena and Francisco and enjoyed homemade gnocchi, salted cake, torta de fragole and wine. They also provide the recipes so if you want to make the food at home. They are incredible hosts, and Frallerenza is the ideal location for a Tuscan getaway. There is a beautiful pool, beautiful garden of flowers everywhere, outdoor activites to use, and wi-fi internet available, too. There is a nearby train station at Allerona (but does not sell tickets there - go to a nearby tabacchi store to purchase train tickets), and travel to Siena. We found Siena to be the perfect day trip. We also went wine tasting at the castle that is seen in the picture on the website. Overall, the price for this agriturismo was well priced and well-worth it's value in gold and wine!

Umbria Agriturismo Frallarenza- a perfect stay
We stayed at Agriturismo Frallarenza near Orvieto for a week in late May and found it to be absolutely ideal for us. The apartment is very tastefully decorated (Serena makes beautiful pottery!), comfortable, and easily accommodated us 6 adults + baby (a crib was thoughtfully provided). The location is incredibly peaceful- tucked in the hills of olives and grapes- and yet close enough to Orvieto to make it easy for trips into town. (Orvieto is about a 20 min drive and has some excellent restaurants and is worth a day of exploring). Frallarenza has everything to make for a relaxing stay- a beautiful pool, outdoor ping-pong, bocce, barbeque and picnic tables. And if you can motivate to get off the lounge chairs, it is ideally located for day trips to the surrounding area (it is possible to take the train from Orvieto to Rome, Florence, or Siena and there are numerous little hill towns within driving distance). Francesco and Serena were welcoming and there were thoughtful touches to our stay, such as a dinner on our arrival and a breakfast tart for our first breakfast. I can think of nothing that would have made our stay any better, except of course more time there. (Worth-noting: I think their website pictures do not do it justice, it is more beautiful and the apartment much larger, than their pictures show.)

Casa Moricciani - New Villa Owned by Isabella and Carlo of Agriturismo Cretaiole
We recently spent a week at a new villa in Tuscany called "Casa Moricciani".  It's in Castelmuzio, just a few km north of Pienza.  We were there with another couple and their two children.  They had the whole downstairs while we had the upstairs suite (two bedrooms, two bathrooms).  This is an extremely upscale place and we were awed by the amenities as well as by the views from the terrace.  The recently renovated home sits on the outer wall of the small village overlooking vineyards, olive groves, Monte Amiata (the highest mountain in Tuscany) and Sant' Anna in Camprena, the monastery where "The English Patient' was filmed.

All in all, this was one of the most remarkable weeks of our lives.  We were treated as the welcomed guests that we would always wish to be.  The villa is beautifully appointed with artful "sgraffitti", comfortable (many antique) furnishings, modern conveniences: wondrous kitchen, flat screen televisions with English-channel options, "three head" showers, and fully stocked wine cellars.  There is a fountain/pool on the terrace, outdoor eating areas for enjoying the "Tuscan sun" or coolness of the evenings.  Twice-weekly laundry service is also provided.

Casa Moricciani is located in Castelmuzio, a wonderful, very small, Tuscan hill town.  The townsfolk are delightful and the local restaurants provide wonderful traditional Tuscan foods.  The local Sangiovese red wines and the local olive oils are not to be missed.  Walk through the village on a cool evening, as we did, and be enthralled – as we were.

Carlo and Isabella Moricciani (the very same people who also own and run Agriturismo Cretaiole) were gracious hosts - always attentive to each of our needs - providing information and guidance as we needed it and a link to the true history and traditions of Tuscany and the nearby Val d'Orcia (a World Heritage Site and, I think, the most beautiful place in Italy). We will definitely return to stay here again! www.casamoricciani.com

Casina Valloreci SOUTHERN TUSCANY
My wife and I have travelled in Italy many times, our accomodation has never impressed me so much as to go to the internet and write a review. Casina Valloreci and the hosts there are something else. In our week there we had the most tranquil days and afternoons at home ,drinking local wines and relaxing in the gardens.. if we went out touring the area, the host Angelo had advice, maps and would assist us in any way. The position of the agritourismo in the heart of southern Tuscany was right in the middle of all the little villages we dreamed of visiting. In the countryside between two tiny unspoilt villages of Petroio and Castelmuzio and just minutes from Pienza, Bagno Vignoni and Montepulciano to name a few.

La Falconara - Montipulciano
We loved staying at La Falconara agritourisimo (B&B). The owners, Alex and Ingrid, felt like close friends when we left. Their B&B is beautiful with grand views of the Tuscan hills, vineyards and olive groves. We enjoyed the end unit loft with the charming stone patio. There were extras in the kitchen like coffee, sugar and Alex' own olive oil, everything to make your stay complete. We even found coffee filters for the coffeemaker. Alex is always willing to sit down and have long conversations, recommend local restaurants or give directions. He even helped me nurse a horrible cold that I came down with the first day there. "Chef" Alex and Ingrid hosted a lovely dinner in their farmhouse kitchen for the guests with several homecooked courses and wines to sample. This leg of our three week Italian adventure was one of our favorites. We would return to La Falconara without hesitation and recommend it to everyone.

Four clicks from Pienza is the Famiglia Moricciani farm of Cretaiole. OMG! I was not sure what to expect but it certainly was not Oz! The only thing better than the wonderful landscapes were the Famiglia Moricciani. Isa, Carlo and Luciano treated us like family. Visit heaven. You'll never regret it! Stop eating now. Casa Serena
We would like to say we enjoyed our stay at Casa Serena near Castiglion Fiorentino

The setting is very calm and back to nature. The best is the breakfast each day look to sit on the views and pool. no rush just relax.

A restaurant serves good pasta about 8 minutes and steak, and this too was very friendly (and cheap). But on most days we ate at the pool or have had our own BBQ

Tuscany
Cretaiole was the perfect place for our family - myself, my husband, 2 boys ages 10 and 13 and my sister-in-law - to vacation. Isabella and her family allowed us to feel so welcome and at home even before we arrived. Upon our arrival, they thoughtfully made suggestions and reservations for various daily or weekly itineraries for us to choose from, gave a very personal tour of their farm where we could see and taste the various products grown and crafted there, loaned cell phones, provided an enormous book of recommended restaurants, hikes, attractions, and organized a terrific pasta making class culminating in a potluck for all the guests - fantastico!

We stayed in the 3 bedroom apartment which was very clean and felt spacious enough for the five of us. The beds and linens were very comfortable and clean, and the views were absolutely stunning from every window. Each day began with delicious coffee stocked in the kitchen, made in the "mokas" provided, and we could relax in front of a fire in the evenings with the firewood kept ready for us. The Moriccianis are such gracious hosts.

Cretaiole was our home base for multiple day trips to surrounding hill towns, and it was always comforting to return there in the evenings to watch the sunset, enjoy a glass of the house wine, and spend time sharing the day's events with Luciano and the other guests while our boys ran around and explored the property. Isabella is a wealth of knowledge about the area, and hearing the other visitors talk about their experiences enriched our visit immeasurably.

Thank you, Moricciani family, for your part in an unforgettable trip of a lifetime! We hope to see you again!

Agriturismo Cretaiole
Agriturismo Cretaiole is an absolutely wonderful place in a picture perfect location. The Moricciani family makes you feel apart of their family. Luciano, Liliana, Carlo, and Isabella go above and beyond the usual hospitality to make your stay an outstanding experience. You truly see the pride and love they have for their heritage. Between the other guest and the Moricciani family there is a wonderful sense of community at the farmhouse, which enhances the experience. Isabella's amazing self-made guidebooks with directions and suggested itineraries are so helpful to make the most of your time in Tuscany (incredible detail). Cretaiole
My husband and I just returned from Creatiole and we couldn't wait to come home and share our experiences . Besides the outstanding views of the Val D'Orcia and the availability of fresh picking from their garden , the accommodations were perfect. Our little kitchen set up was absolutely charming . We cooked a few nights after shopping at the neighborhood Coop and the fresh pasta shop in town . The trip to the Romitorio , Etruscan ruins owned by the Morriciano family, was a great experience and Isabella's narratives were so informative . Having a background in the Arts , this proved to be priceless for me .The graciousness of our hosts and their hospitality was sincere and showed in many ways including our Pici pasta making night and Luciano's night visits in the veranda. Isabella made certain that every guest had a comprehensive guidebook for reference including maps and directions to popular sites . Our dinner at the monastery was intimate and set up by Isabella as an optional event . Tuscan food is simple and olive oil testing was also a part of our week , led by both Isabella and Carlo. The saddest part was leaving , but now that just means I need to plan another trip to Cretaiole in the near future.

Cortona/Tuscany
We had our first stay in an Agiturismo in March, 2011 and throughly enjoyed it. I took my family to Casale della Torre (La due Sorrelle on Rentvillas.com, who we booked through and were also quite pleased with) for a week and we couln't have been happier with the experience. The owners, Lapo and Paola, and their daughters, were gracious, the facility was first class, and the location was perfect. While they lived in neighborig Camucia, they were their most days tending the vinyards and grounds. They produce their own wine, which we drank in abundance, cheese and olive oil as we were staying on a working farm. We either drove or took trains to explore the region and were able to have a comfortable base to return to each evening. We were quite close to Cortona, which was nice, due to the convenience of restaurants and shops. Having your own house, with kitchen and grounds, is much better than a hotel for staying more than a day or two. Argiturismos are an excellent way to really enjoy italy, particulary with a group and i recommend them, particualrly Casale della Torre.

We highly recommend Il Canto del Sole (Cuna, It)!!!!! It is an agriturismo about 6 miles southeast of Sienna. We have stayed in a lot of B&B's on both sides of the Atlantic, but Laura, Luciano, and son Marco were the best hosts we have ever encountered. The room was a bit spartan, but the common areas, the breakfasts, their recommendation of local restaurants, the 5-course meal (additional), and the peace and quiet of the countryside all combined for one of the best touring experiences we have ever had. You won't regret going there, but you might regret NOT going to Il Canto del Sole.

Tuscan and Umbria
We had a couple of really positive experiences at two agri-turismos; one in Tuscany and another in Umbria. "Casa Fratti", lust outside of Pienza, is a real working farm with well cared for animals. Monica is a great hostess and prepared us a couple of memorable dinners. We also spent four nights at the relatively new "Le Mandrie di San Paolo" just south of Assisi. Alex, our host couldn't have been more accomodating and the food every night was superb. The best we've had in Italy. They produce super premium olive oil and Alex will proudly show you how they make it. I would strongly recommend both these agri-turismo B&Bs

We stayed at Agriturismo Cretaiole for a week this past March. The weather was glorious , the property beautiful and Isabella and her family made the experience warm and wonderful. We hope to return for another magical holiday! Thanks for leading us there!

Via Piana
Agriturismos and B&B's are great in Italy. Earlier this year, my sister and I stayed at some excellent ones north of Venice on the Strada de Prosecco and I will certainly be returning this spring and summer. Agriturismo Vecchio Tornio was my favorite. We got there late and they were the most gracious hosts. It is in SUSEGANA near Valdobiadene.

Traveling between Rome and Naples, I found an excellent rustic B&B in the town of Via Piana just outside Sora, italycountrystay.com Anna(owner) was a nice host. The rooms are very reasonable, clean, rustic and you get to eat fresh eggs from Anna's chicken coop. A good experience all around.

Agriturismo Cretaiole
We loved Cretaiole in Pienza. We saw them in the Italy guide and had friends stay there recently. Famiglia Moricciani were so hospitable. We were greeted on arrival and sent to their favorite restaurant for dinner. Luciano met us in the evenings with Grappa and other treats. Issa showed us around the farm and directed us to her favorite places. We would recommend this place to any of our friends and family.

Although Rick finds Pienza "greedy" we found it to be one of the best hill top villages we visited. The M-towns tended to be more "touristy" due to their wine production.

Montepulciano Agriturismo
Stayed at La Falconara just outside of Montepulciano in mid-March. We had a marvelous time and enjoyed the hospitality of our hosts, Alex & Ingrid. They helped us w/restaurant recommendations, directions, and purchasing train tix. Most impressively though were the efforts made to help us with our 2 teen daughters missing their trains, seeking a charging solution to our camera, and dealing with a fraud alert on our credit card. The rooms and location is wonderful but the reason to stay there is the people behind the place. Highly recommended!

Italy Farmstay
I spent three weeks at Italy Farmstay, located near Sora between Rome and Naples. After the hustle and bustle of hostel jumping, it was refreshing to find a place that both felt like home and consistently challenged me. In my relatively short stay, I felt almost like a member of the family while also getting to meet people from all over the world. I had the pleasure of going one day with guests from Holland, Italy and Israel on an amazing hike in a nearby town. In addition to providing guests with a hand-drawn map, Antonello & co. had painted markers along the path, including a final (much needed) "4 minutes" sign assuring those in doubt that the anticipated waterfall is coming up soon. (We still somehow managed to get lost a couple of times, but that was of our own accord.) The hike itself was ideal by my personal hiking standards – it was challenging physically at times on the way to and from the stream, and logistically when maneuvering back, forth, and up the stream toward the waterfall (note: it might help to have water shoes for the final stretch), but not so challenging that you couldn't enjoy the surroundings along the way.

My time here met so many of my overall travel goals: get to know people of various cultures, live symbiotically with nature, and be immersed in lifestyles significantly different from my own. I will always remember the people I met here and the experiences we shared. More information about the accommodations, activities, etc. can be found on http://www.Italyfarmstay.com.

Italy Farmstay - Abruzzi
Italy Farmstay is nestled just above the small town of Sora which is located halfway between Rome and Naples. I stayed there for about a month early this year. All you have to do is step outside to enjoy fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and olive groves. If you love the outdoors this is a great place to be, and Antonello (the host) is a passionate guy who is always eager to help you get the most out of this beautiful region.

For me, the highlight of Italy Farmstay has to be the communal atmosphere. Every day we would share lunch and dinner with other guests, volunteers and the family around a big table. The every family member contributed their own delicious dishes, from Maria's homemade bread and pasta, to Giuseppe's organic wine, to Antonello's take on local meats and veggies. It was always a pleasure to share such fulfilling (and generously portioned) meals in the company of interesting people who had come from all over the world. They are also very accommodating to vegetarians and others with special dietary needs, even gluten-free.

During my stay I also got to check out a truffle festival in the nearby Campoli-Appennino. Happily, it was full of free samples of local treats.

Overall, Italy Farmstay is warm and authentic. It's off the beaten path, but there's no shortage of things to do. You can get more info and see pictures on their website: www.italyfarmstay.com

Agriturismos in Italy
Our family of 4 spent a few nights at Torre Cangiani on the bay of Naples, a bit past Sorrento on the peninsula. They have a few different options for accommodation. We stayed in one of the oldest sections of the house - the 16th century tower originally built as a lookout for Turkish pirates. The grounds are beautiful - lemon and olive orchards surround the gardens and the views of the bay can't be beat - Mt Vesuvius to the East and Capri to the West. Check out their website. http://www.torrecangiani.com/ The photos don't lie. Aldo and his wife were fabulous hosts.

agriturismo Poggiacolle-San Gimignano-Tuscany
We stayed at the beautiful and historic "Poggiacolle" agriturismo for 5 days in April 2009 , which features a renovated farmhouse with single, double, triple rooms and apartment, as well as a communal kitchen and sitting area (from where you can look out over the vineyards and olive groves to the walled city of San Gimignano-gorgeous!). The owner, Stephan, could not have been more gracious or hospitable, giving us suggestions for places to eat, places to see, giving us a tour of the vineyard/olive groves and taste testing the wine/olive oil. We highly recommend this agriturismo! It was our favorite place to stay that trip. We are now planning another trip and will definitely look at more agriturismos.

Montepulciano Agriturismo Tuscany - La Bruciata
My husband and I stayed at La Bruciata in Montepulciano, just outside the town center (maybe 1-2 miles). You can find our review and those from other visitors at tripadvisor.com The atmosphere was incredible, we would stay there again in a heart beat! Delicous homemade wine and olive oil, breakfast buffet delicous. Dinner available as well that was great....1 free dinner with one week stay or 25 euros pp including great wine! There are only four units so its small and cozy. You can hike to another very small gorgeous town (Montichiello?) and travel to Pienza, Montalcino and other surrounding hilltowns from this base.

Southern tuscany
We spent 6 days in southern tuscany at LeCaggiole in Montepulciano. It is a working farm producing some of the finest wine I have ever had, and a wonderful olive oil as well. The room was clean, comfortable and we were always happy to return after a full day of sightseeing. This was a good base for seeing many small hilltowns, and even siena and florence. Giacomo and his mother were great hosts always around with advise about rerstaurants and places to visit. They provided a great breakfast of cakes and pastries and really good coffee. We ate one evening meal at the farm. It was a simple, but very elegant typical tuscan feast. Mama Ornella even taught my wife and I how to make and roll pici, the local pasta. Some places make you feel at home, and this was certainly one of those places. we will definitely return. In fact, we are going back very soon.

Casina Valloreci – luxurious and affordable
Planning a trip to Tuscany is not too easy if you want to avoid crowds and be at the very heart of everything at the same time. For our honeymoon we were looking for a special place where we could combine romantic walks, accommodation right in the nature with good food, wine and culture. After surfing the internet for two weekends we found a place that not only looked great but was also reasonably priced. I have to commit though that our choice was somehow a coincidence, but one that we don't want to miss. We stayed at Casina Valloreci which is basically an old stone house divided in two apartments and a very cute and tasteful decorated small neighbor house, renovated for the guests. To reach the location you have to drive for about a mile from the main road, which means that you are in absolute peace, just surrounded by olive trees and the typical vegetation you would expect in that region. Some days we didn't even feel like leaving the property – the pool (which we had just for us!) and the wonderful views were too convincing. But it's also a good starting point for walks to the two small neighboring villages, where you find good restaurants or for drives to the typical must-sees like Montalcino and Montepulciano. Pienza as an example is only a 15' drive away. The owners are very welcoming and know how to spoil their guests. They helped planning our trips, finding the best restaurants and even cooked for us one evening. Everything fitted together perfectly, we will be back!

Italyfarmstay: the highlight of our travels in Italy
I was touring Italy with my sister, and we'd seen several cities but both felt something was missing from our adventures. An old friend had recommended Italy Farmstay to my sister, so we tracked it down and they had last-minute availability for the two of us (we called one day in advance, and this was early Nov).

Getting out to the farm takes some patience, but I assure you it is well worth it. From Rome we took the underground, then a bus out to Sora (2 hours), then our host picked us up and took us to...

ITALY FARMSTAY! A magical place full of wonderful people and interesting adventures. Antonello - our hilarious and good-natured host - greeted us with delicious bruschetta and homemade wine, then showed us to our room, which was humble and rustic but definitely clean and cozy.

The entire farm is well-kept and comfortable. Throughout the day they roast chestnuts on the fire and offer them to guests. There are hammocks to lounge in and sweet dogs and cats that love to cuddle. Everything is organic, produced either on the farm or locally: bread, cheese, wine, beer, tomato sauce, fig jam, olive oil (to die for), nuts, fruit, you name it. You can go into town for dinner if you like, but I recommend sticking around for the dinners they cook - always 2 amazing courses, and they accommodate vegetarians. Definitely worth the price! It's easy to see why volunteers on the farm often stay for several weeks at a time.

Your experience at the farm depends on what kind of stay you want. You can hike all day, ride horses, explore the town of Sora, or stay in and visit with other travelers around a crackling fire. We took a cooking class with Antonello's mother, Maria, and the next day got up well before dawn to watch the shepherd make cheese from fresh sheep's milk - an experience not to be missed! (These classes were 11 and 14 euros, respectively).

Italy Farmstay gave us exactly the experience we had been missing in the rest of our travels - amazing people, homemade food, a beautiful country getaway outside the bustle of the city. Our three nights there were entirely unique and wholly satisfying, not to mention a terrific deal. And Antonello's whole family was utterly delightful - the best hosts one could ask for. I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a wholesome experience outside the shopping and tourism of larger cities. My sister and I would return in a heartbeat. Thank you, Antonello!

La Badia, Tuscany - Il Mulino – A historical estate and organic farm in Tuscany
Last year while searching on the internet for historical farm estates in Tuscany, I found Trust & Travel (www.trustandtravel.com). They have historical estates all over Italy that are "Agriturismos." It was my family and friends vacation and our vacation goal was that: we wanted to spend a week in Tuscany and make one home base while we could do day trips and hikes in Tuscany. My experience with Il Mulino (which means old mill) was a magnificent experience for family and friends. It was truly a unique Tuscan experience, the owners were delightful hosts and made delicious handmade pizza from their organic farm. Just recently, I found a video about Il Mulino that captures my exact experience of staying at Il Mulino. There was so much to enjoy at the estate, from day picture-perfect hikes to taking in a day tours to Pisa and Lucca (which are about 1 hour away). The best part about the whole start to finish of the vacation was the owner of Trust & Travel, Katharina really did an exceptional job in helping me make an extraordinary vacation for my family and friends, and she answered my emails and phone calls and made me feel very comfortable and confident in traveling to rural Tuscany with family and friends.

Le Cinciallegre, just outside of Gubbio, Umbria
Le Cinciallegre is a collection of beautifully restored 13th-century buildings just outside of Gubbio managed by Fabrizio and his wife, Maria Cristina. After ten splendid but hectic days in Rome and Florence, we arrived at Le Cinciallegre and encountered a haven of comfort, peace, and tranquility. My husband, two daughters and I were warmly greeted by Fabrizio, Cristina and their two dogs, Gastone and Yasmine. At Le Cinciallegre, enchanting rustic stone buildings are framed by flower-filled patios and surrounded by trees and mountains that soften at dusk to a hue of smoky purple-blue. Our lovely rooms were spacious and immaculate with large windows to allow in the sweet air and sounds of nature. Each room possesses a private patio to enjoy a good book, conversation, or the exquisite beauty of the surrounding countryside.

Returning home to dinner each evening was always a high point of our day, a time to relax and absorb the stunning sights we had witnessed. Fabrizio cultivates the produce used in Cristina's cooking, the meats and cheeses are produced locally, and even the honey is harvested from Fabrizio's beehives. My daughter and I are on special diets and had struggled in Rome and Florence to find high-quality, delicious food. Our search ended with Cristina, who prepared a series of meals we still dream about[INVALID]perfect risottos, succulent meat dishes, vegetables picked just hours earlier, and desserts that can only be described as divine.

Best of all, we would have an opportunity each night to chat with Fabrizio, who speaks wonderful English and is a fascinating individual who, with Cristina, has lived all over the world. He provided invaluable information about how best to spend our days touring nearby hill towns and locations of interest. When the time came to depart, we were saddened; not only were we leaving a kind of paradise, we were leaving two new and cherished friends in Fabrizio and Cristina.

Le Cinciallegre is an extraordinary place run by two remarkable people. Of all the experiences we enjoyed during our 16-day Italian odyssey, staying at Le Cinciallegre and getting to know Fabrizio and Maria Cristina will remain one we will remember most fondly.

Cretailoe, just outsdie Pienza, is a slice of Tuscan heaven
My husband, 10-year old daughter and I thoroughly enjoyed immersing ourselves in the Tuscan countryside by staying at an Agriturismo just outside Pienza. Cretaiole provided a memorable and magical experience. Everything about the property was perfect - the expansive grounds for relaxing, walking, playing and massage in the olive garden(!) and the proximity to many wonderful towns and destinations (Mantalcino, Sienna, Firenze, etc). While we stayed in our own apartment, we felt a sense of community with the Moricciani family and the other travelers. We enjoyed visiting over morning coffee in the courtyard and sharing several of the Cretaiole arranged events (pasta making, followed by dinner is a must!). Our one bedroom apartment was comfortable, appointed with everything we needed and provided breathtaking views of the country side from all windows. But the real highlight of Cretaiole is Isabella. Her warmth, hospitality, terrific English and depth of knowledge of the region helped create a truly wonderful vacation. We look forward to returning one day!

farmstay two hours south of Rome
Our family of five, three children (7, 9 and 11) and two adults, spent a fantastic 5 days at Italy Farm Stay. Stream, fields, fruit trees, animals, nearby castle and waterfall were just what we all needed. After staying in Italian cities this was the perfect stopping point to let the kids run, relax and spend some time with nature. Antonello, Maria and Gessepi made our stay here a highlight of our six week trip. Our room with attached bathroom was clean and comfortable. The waterfall hike was beautiful (we did arrange through Antonello for a ride to the trailhead). The horseback riding was also great - lovely horses. We recommend this to all, particularly to families and anyone who enjoys getting to know friendly, authentic people. Their website is www.italyfarmstay.com

Casa Portagioia. Tuscany, Italy
My wife and I were very happy with the outstanding location and facilities of this wonderful bed and breakfast. Even more impressive was the friendly service and helpfulness of Terry and Marcello in helping us in any way possible. They recommended and made restaurant reservations, found us hard to find museum tickets, gave detailed driving instructions, and even gave me suggested jogging routes for a great run through the Tuscan countryside. By all standards, this is an excellent choice for a great Tuscan stay.

La Falconara Agriturismo - True Tuscany
La Falconara in Montepulciano was amazing. My husband and I stayed there for a week in November 2010. Off season, and it was still breathtaking. Even when it rained or there was fog, the landscape was like a muted watercolor...absolutely beautiful.

The hosts, Alex and Ingrid were beyond warm and accomodating. They went out of their way to make sure they met and exeeded our expectations, welcomed us into their home like family, and provided so much assistance, tips, and suggestions for the time we spent in Tuscany. Montepulciano is a beautiful and fun town, definitely worth a visit, but we suggest staying for at least a few days to really soak up the culture. The food and wine in Montepulciano are reasonably priced, and better quality than we found anywhere else in Italy.

La Falconara's accomodations are true Tuscany, very comfortable, roomy, and no detail was forgotten. We would come back year after year if we could.

Val d' Orcia, Tuscany
We spent a week in early October at Agriturismo Cretaiole and had an incredible experience. We wanted to spend time with our two grown children and their spouses in an authentic Tuscan environment and Cretaiole not only lived up to our expectations, but exceeded them. It was the perfect place to have quiet family time together and at the same time, there were more opportunities for activities than we had time to take advantage of in one week. We stayed in the beautiful 3 bedroom apartment, which was roomy and tastefully decorated. We are grateful to Isabella for sharing her vast knowledge of the history of the area and traditions of her family. She made our stay easier by recommending wonderful places to eat, as well as making reservations for us. Although the local restaurants were fabulous, the highlights were the two dinners we had at Cretaiole with the other guests, and the delicious lunch following the grape harvest we were lucky enough to experience. Also, making our own lunch with fresh tomatoes, basil and arugula from the garden was a marvelous treat. Having Isabella teach us how to make pici and being treated to the delicious sausages Carlos grilled were another highlight of the trip. The very best was Luciano, who seemed genuinely pleased when we would join him for a late night glass of his homemade grappa! The Moricciani family's warm hospitality made the stay special and contributed to making our vacation a unique Tuscan experience our family will never forget.

Agriturismo Cretaiole
My wife and I have been fortunate to travel throughout the world (with Rick Steves' books in hand!) but seldom have we come upon a place quite as magical as Agriturismo Cretaiole near Pienza. What makes this beautiful place so wonderful is the Morriciani family. There is no more beautiful site in the world than Cretaiole overlooking the Val d'Orcia and the beautiful village of Pienza. Isabella, Carlo and Luciano have made this farm the most special place we have ever visited...from the special events, the late-night grappa and vin santo from Luciano, and all the attention to details that make the visit of EVERY guest the highlight of their year. We could go on and on but suffice it to say that we plan on being at Cretaiole with the Morriciani family twice a year EVERY year from now on. Rick, you hit the bullseye with this one!!! Casa Valloreci,Tuscany
Hi Rick,

I love your show, which I listen to over the Internet in the kitchen here in Ireland, beautifully amplified through my Bose speakers, all the way from KDFC. I listen to that station because I spent several years as a grad student at UC Berkeley. Even as a European, I get a kick out of your unique way of presenting interesting places in this part of the world, so I can go and experience some of them for myself.

I thought I'd share a very special experience that I had a couple of months ago in Tuscany. My daughter (a college student) and I spent a week in Rome and then drove up to the Val d'Orcia, about an hour south of Siena.

I'd been before, but I wanted to expose my daughter to the magic I'd discovered there. She was a bit sceptical about staying in the countryside, but went with the program.

I'd found a place online, quite by accident, called the Casina Valloreci (http://www.casinavalloreci.com/index.php/en/?lang=en&Itemid=1&option=com_content&/en/option=com_content&id=1&view=article), that's with a 'chi' at the end, as in 'cheese'.

This is an old, solid, stone farmhouse of the Tuscan type, with just two accommodations – one under the 'piano nobile' (the first floor where the family live), and the other a small but beautifully decorated bungalow in the yard beside it.

To say 'yard' in this location is way off the mark. This is a charming area with pergolas, outdoor seating, a fabulous pool, and a kind of covered area fully equipped for outdoor cooking and feasting.

Lovely as it is, and as genuinely warm, welcoming and amazingly helpful as the owners are, the Casina is not what it's all about. It's about the area.

The Val d'Orcia is an undulating, soft and gentle landscape the like of which I have never encountered elsewhere, even in Tuscany. Its vistas and perspectives seep into the soul. Every hilltop has a walled medieval village to crown it, and each one is a delight to explore. The valley has been so esteemed internationally that it has had a preservation order put on it by UNESCO, as a world heritage site. It is the real and actual landscape one sees in the distance through the open arched windows of all those Renaissance paintings of the Madonna and Child. It is a Renaissance-man-made ideal of what a landscape should look like, if it were a slice of Paradise.

Across the valley is the stunningly beautiful monastery they used in The English Patient. The full-on genuine earthy Italian, life-affirming Julia-Roberts experience in East, Pray, Love is there to be had in every nook and cranny of the place.

I hope you'll give it a try and tell America about it.

Kind regards,

fattoria di mugnano agriturismo in tuscany
My wife and I enjoyed staying at the Fattoria di Mugnano in Tuscany. This place is strategically located, close to Pisa, Sienna, S. Gimignano and other places. So if you travel by car, make this place your home base. Fattoria di Mugnano is run by Mama and her daughters, Daniela and Monica (both speak English and Daniela speaks also German). All women, and Fattoria is run by them, were very helpful with our accommodation and explanations and recommendations about the area, Tuscany cuisine, etc. This Fattoria has great rooms and a restaurant where cook Elisabeth prepares the authentic Toscany dishes. Delizioso! At the restaurant they use their own olive oil and chianti, and locally grown products - vegetables, fruits, meats, cheeses... We had the best meals there on our three-week Italian vacation. Rooms are spacious, clean, well furnished, with great views of hills and valleys. Too bad we could not stay too long there. We may go there to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Viva Italia bellissima!

Tuscany villa
My wife and I stayed nine days at a wonderful agriturismo; Casina Valloreci, near Petroio. It is a perfect little stone cottage near the house of Angelo Capponi, the owner. It was very comfortable, with kitchenette, full bath, and internet access. There is a swimming pool for warm weather use. Angelo was the ideal host, and was extremely helpful with advice about the area. The cottage is down a country road, surrounded by olive groves. Due to the central location, we were able to visit eleven Tuscan hill towns. This was our favorite place on a two month tour, and we highly recommend it!

Agriturismos in Tuscany
A big thank you for your wonderful travel books. We used the Ireland one a couple years ago when we spent two weeks in that wonderful country. We particularly liked a B & B we used from the book that was outside of Dublin. It was so smart to take the train in. And then this past September, we used both your Rome book and the one for Tuscany when we spent 3 weeks in Italy, two wonderful ones in Tuscany.

We thought we were getting too old to drive around and were on the brink of booking a tour (which neither of us really wanted to do) when I read about an Agriturismo near Pienza in your Tuscany book. When I emailed the owner, she wrote back that she was booked for the two weeks we wanted to stay, but recommended Casina Valloreci. We would like to recommend this wonderful place to you and your readers. Their website is lovely, but the real thing is amazing! Our hosts, Angelo and Umberto were helpful, generous and so accommodating. We stayed in a small house that was furnished with everything we needed. The grounds had many areas to simply be and enjoy the surrounding beautiful, including a pristine pool that made me feel like I was in a movie. The Ca sina was centrally located so that we were able to take day trips to the surrounding hill towns[INVALID]Pienza, San Quirico D'Orcia, Montepu;ciano, Montecino, Bagno Vignioni and Volterra. We spent some time at the convent of Sant' Anna in Camprena and San Antimo monestery. We took the train from Rome to Sienna where we had a rental car reserved, spent the night there and then drove to the Casina which is between Petroio and Castel Munzio.

Casina Valloreci it great. We were able to bring back olive oil made from the olives grown on the farm.

My wife and I spent 9 nights at La Falconara in October and it was really romantic and cozy. We absolutely loved it and recommend it very highly for anyone who wants peace and quiet between day trips around Tuscany. Other postings below speak of Alex and Ingrid the hosts who are very special people who make your stay fantastic. La Falconara has impressive scenery from each side. The apartments are well equipped for cooking and relaxing. My husband and I had a wonderful time at Casina Valloreci this past summer. The location was breathtaking, nestled amongst the olive groves with stunning views all around. Our host was amazing- kind, warm, and completely hospitable. Our facilities were perfect for our weeklong stay. It was in short driving distance to many must-see Tuscan towns and many delicious restaurants. We couldn't have asked for anything more!

Tuscany
We have just returned from San Gimignano for the fourth time within eleven years and have been especially to Poggiacolle for the third time within nine years.

These scarce numbers might tell it all to people who have already seen SG, but such a concentration would do wrong both to the place and Stefano's team. Every time I reach Poggiacolle's spacious parking I cannot help looking at the beautiful countryside which surrounds San Gimignano for a couple of minutes before I get into our apartment. I have to admit that I am one of those who love Italy for its history, language, cooking, music and car design.

But nethertheless, even if you think that you may have already seen most of the places that non-italian tourists could be interested in Stefano and Eddo do still know at least a handful of impressive sites that you certainly have not been to yet - like the relics of the former monastry of San Galgano that provided us unforgettable visual and - owing to an accomplished guitar player - also audible impressions when we got there on October 15th.

The well equipped kitchen of the" Rosa"apartment which we already knew from our first stay in 2001 encouraged us to try some genuine italian recipes - rather successfully as our daughter stated. The excellent olive oil the farm produces beside its delicious tuscan red and white wines proved to be helpful as well.

Agritourism Italy - Tuscany
We recently returned from a trip to Northern Italy and Tuscany and would highly recommend Casina Villoreci to fellow travellers in search of a few days of peace and quiet in southern Tuscany (two hours north of Fiumicino airport). Please see their website at www.casinavilloreci.com. Accomodations are limited to two couples. One is a small very well decorated one bedroom cottage and the other a one bedroom apartment in the main house. Both have kitchens and nice bathrooms. The grounds are yours while there [INVALID] swimming pool, wood fired BBQ and pizza oven. No other guests. It is situated close to Pienza and Montapulciano. Other neighboring hill towns are not touristy [INVALID] the quaint Italy we were looking for. We used the house as a base and went all over Tuscany to nearly all of the hill towns in Rick's Italy 2010 guide. It is a particularly good spot for two couples travelling together or for a romantic and peaceful stay for two. The owner Angelo is a wonderful host. He is a retired Alitalia employee who speaks english very well and has been pretty much everywhere on the planet. His permanent home is in Rome. This is an olive and grape farm so plenty of open spaces. Deal with him directly for the best weekly rates. By far our lowest cost and highest value accomodations in Italy!

IL Molinello, Asciano, Tuscany,Italy
We came here to IL Molinello for one week, but ended up extending our stay to 2 weeks because we really have enjoyed the peace and tranquility here. After 2.5 months traveling the sites of Europe, we needed a rest and we found it here. The staff here speaks English and they went out of their way to be helpful. We had an issue with our car and they made calls to help us sort it out. I can not say enough how helpful and kind the owners and staff are here. The apartments are very comfortable. We have not gone to a restaurant for 2 weeks because we enjoyed cooking in our kitchen here and eating on our patio under the stars. The farm is a lovely, lush paradise. Free internet was very helpful. They have bikes if you want to rent them. It is easy to get to Siena for a day trip or to Florence. Our children are 8 and 10 and they have enjoyed the playground and trampoline. This is a great place for families. I highly recommend this spot. http://www.molinello.com/

Tuscan Agriturismo - LaFalconara - Montepulciano
This past summer we delighted in our stay at La Falconara. One would think that staying in Tuscany it would be hard to disappoint, and I think in a large part this is true, however we were surprised that our expectations were solidly exceeded by our time at La Falconara. It had a pool, it was located in the gorgeous Tuscan countryside (amidst olive trees, grape vines and beautiful flowers), it was within walking distance of Montepulciano, the building had wonderful old world charm ... yet that does not even begin to describe the magic of this place. The hosts, Alex and Ingrid, have a passion for the area as well as for their guests. The accommodations are outfitted with every cooking utensil you could imagine, we arrived to fresh flowers in the room and a fresh plate of apricots and some biscuits for the children. In the room were guides written by the host of things to do and see in the area. They were a generous and eager source of information which enhanced our stay beyond what we could have done with our travel books. There were great recommendations of places to eat and the hosts have lived in the area for awhile and have valuable connections with the locals in many of the neighboring towns. It has been months since our visit and yet La Falconara has remained a vivid and cherished memory of our time in Italy.

Magical. Unforgettable. Enriching. Human.

Tuscany
We have just returned from a fantastic stay in Tuscany. We used our Rick Steves guidebook for every part of the trip and it was so very helpful. It gave us guidance at every level from finding a parking space in La Spezia to choosing a cafe in Montipulciano. The best though was the advice on agritusimos . Using Rick's guidance we found the most wonderful agrituisimo in Pienza. Staying at Cretailoe with Issabelle Moricciani and her family was like staying with long lost relatives. We were welomed into their lives and their fantastic Tuscan world. This was the trip of a lifetime.

Agriturismo Le Caggiole, Montepulciano
This agriturismo consists of two ancient buildings lovingly rebuilt with modern amenities. It is not swank but quite well kept and comfortable. It is in an olive grove and has a vineyard just up the road. Pomegranate and fig trees are scattered around, also bee hives. Our apartment included a full kitchen, although we were only there 3 nights so didn't use it much. The host, Giacomo, was very nice and helpful, recommended some good places to visit off the beaten track. He has researched the history of the site and is clearly close to the land. It is only a couple of minutes drive into Montepulciano which is a great example of a Tuscan hill town.

Le Caggiole can house only 4 or 5 couples at a time so there was no crowd. Mama's breakfast cakes are made with fresh fruit and baked fresh each morning. They are spectacular! We were able to attend one of the Tuscan dinners that are offered irregularly. The food was very good, but authentic Tuscan food seems to revolve around meat, meat, and more meat so we were uncomfortably stuffed. Not knocking it, just too much. We loved the area and the place and would happily return.

Italy Farm Stay, Sora, Italy, 2 hours from Rome and Naples
I came to this farm stay on a whim when a guy at my hostel in Naples told me about it. My friend and I had been searching for a place like this but had no idea how to find it so we were very thankful to have gotten to stay here right before we had to leave to go home to America. I wrote to the farm last minute and they wrote back quickly saying that they would squeeze us in, even with our exact room request. We were going to stay in Rome for our last 5 days but we ended up cancelling those days one by one the more we stayed at the farm. It is simply gorgeous here. The house is warm and nicely decorated and the farm is feet away from the back door. You can lay in a hammock, watch the sheep, pet the horse and donkey, or mosey through the vineyards, tomato vines, and olive trees. then if you venture a little further you can reach a castle, ruins and a waterfall on a hike. They have many activities to choose from, especially on a sunny day. We did a cooking class and horseback riding which were both great. Maria is wonderful to cook with, she is interested in where everyone came from, their families and their hobbies. We made pumpkin parapadelle from scratch and got to eat it later for dinner. The horseback riding was really exciting. you can choose to ride to a 1,000 year old church on the short ride or do that and go further to a view of the castle on a long ride. to get there you ride your horse right through the river and through beautiful and hilly trails under the mountains. I would suggest this to anyone who is travelling anywhere close. even if you come for just a day. It is a nice get away from Rome and Naples and you will get a more authentic Italian experience. We would have stayed here much longer if we had the time. You should definitely stay here if you get the chance.

il Molinello
My wife and I stayed at il Molinello following a bike tour this September. Two of the owners, Alessandro and Elisa, have embraced the history of the 13th century property, preserving the remains of the mill waterwheel, the beautiful woodwork in the rooms, and generous use of travertine a signature of the area. Both are very knowledgeable about the area, the local establishments that embrace the sustainable lifestyle and love sharing their property. Alessandro seems to bring unmatched passion to his varied pursuits and loves sharing his knowledge of the farm, olive oil and wine offerings (trained sommelier) in the brick arched ceiling enoteca. He prices his favorite wines in the enoteca extremely well for guests. When I first got there, we spent a good hour walking the property just appreciating the truffle trees, vegetable garden, chickens and the beautiful main home/former mill. Very relaxing, could stay on the property just soaking in the atmosphere for several days but it's also a convenient location. The local village sits on a hill viewed from the front yard, and with biking options and Sienna a short drive away there is plenty for the more active days. My wife & I would absolutely return.

Agriturismo Cretaiole - Val de Orcia
I highly recommend Agriturismo Cretaiole. My girlfriends and I were there in September 2010, and I could not have been more pleased with the experience. I've already made my reservation for my next visit to Cretaiole! It's more than a vacation – it is comfortable immersion in to the Tuscan way of life: slow paced and always appreciative of the land, bounty and tradition of the region. The Moricciani family, headed by Luciano, cater to their guests' every need. If you want to live the Tuscan life and learn the language, the customs, the food, the vino – then Cretaiole is the right place. Luciano's daughter-in-law, Isabella, is a gracious host and speaks fluent English so you are never lost. Though you will learn some Italian fairly quickly! She plans a variety of activities throughout the week that are unique and not easily accessed by non-guests, so you feel truly special. A MUST do is the weekly Family Night, where Isa and all the guests make Pici pasta, her husband Carlo grills the meat, and Luciano pours the vino rosso. Another must do activity is the visit to the family farm just down the road and the nightly visits from Luciano when he shares his tasty vino, vin santo and grappa. At Cretaiole, guests get to know eachother as much as you wish. It's perfect for single travelers that might want to visit with others occasionally. Accommodations are super clean and comfortable, but not fancy. For us technology obsessed Americanos, there is wireless internet in the sun room. The grounds are simple, but breathtaking with views over the valley to Pienza and an impressive and large, "help yourself" garden. Years ago I stayed in a villa in Tuscany and the villa option just does not compare to a farmhouse stay. My advice: spend a week at Cretaiole and enjoy the Tuscan life. Try to bring it back with you to the states. Slow down and appreciate the simple things.

Cretaiole
My husband and I just came back from two weeks at Cretaiole in Pienza, Tuscany, Italy. It was a wonderful two weeks. The rooms are rustic farmhouse; we had a one-bedroom with kitchen and wood-burning fireplace. The views are beautiful from the property, so serene and peaceful. The best part about it for us was getting to feel like we were a part of their family. Isabella, Carlo, Luciano and Liliana Moricciani provide you with such warmth and a whole wealth of different activities and experiences to choose from. You can visit the family farm and smell their tanks of fresh, grassy olive oil, taste their homemade wines, meats and cheeses; have dinner at a monastery, visit Siena, go on a truffle hunt, take a ride in a hot air balloon, take part in the grape or olive harvests and learn to make the local pasta,Pici. Or you can do nothing at all, just relax and read in the sun! It's definitely a place for both families with kids, without kids and people traveling alone. I have put lots of details and pictures on my blog if you want more details. www.winesandrose.blogspot.com www.cretaiole.it

Creatoile in Tuscany
If you want a very special vacation consider staying at this Agriturismo or in one of the 2 village apartments owned by the family. We chose to stay in their smallest apartment, IlNido, in a tiny hill town of 200 people about 9 km from the farm but were included in all the farm activities. We loved the feeling of living in an Italian village but those staying on the farm felt their situation was best. Everyone is welcome to pick the wonderful fresh produce from the large farm garden-we did this 3 times and had a very healthy vacation! (I have celicac disease and cannot ingest wheat so we prepared some of our meals in the apartment. Our host, Isabella Morichinni made several accomodations for me so that I could be included in the wonderful Tuscan "feast" that is included for all who stay with her. She also directed me to the COOP and Pharmacia where some gluten-free pasta and other GF products were available) Nothing is too much trouble for Isabella[INVALID]-she wants everyone to love the farm and the Val de Orchia area as much as she does. All aspects of the visit were well planned due to Isabella's attention to detail. Many activities are included with the rental price[INVALID]-olive oil tasting, a visit to an Eutruscan site owned by the family, and extra choices like a 4 hour guided hike through the Tuscan hills, a 4 hour watercolor class, etc. are priced reasonably. The personal interest of Isabella, her husband, Carlos and his father, Luciano made this the most memorable of our 4 trips to Italy. Thank you, Isabella!

Agriturismo in Umbria
My husband and I have just returned from our 13th trip to Italy and our 8th stay at agriturismo Le Casette. We truly love this place...they have several locations with accomodations and we have stayed in most of them by now. The Minghelli family extend such warmth and care. We prefer to have dinner with them in their restaurant each evening and the food is fresh and rich with the ingredients harvested on the farm. You are served appetizers, a first plate, second plate, vegetable, and dessert, then espresso and their own liquor, Viscilo, which is made with cherry leaves, is served. The owner, Daniela, often seats english speakers with Europeans who also speak English and we have formed many friendships over the years with table mates who now often meet us there again on vacation. The apartments are so clean and lovely, with everything needed to make your stay restful and fun. Daniela is installing fans in the apartments this winter to increase comfort during warm summer days and nights. Le Casette is just 10-15 minutes from Orvieto, and a number of other hill towns that are welcoming, medieval, and picturesque. We first learned of Agriturismo Le Casette from a Rick Steve's Italy book, that we never travel without. You need a car to get there (about 1 hour north of Rome on the Autostrada) and you can spend your days like we have, beside the pool at Le Casette, or visiting small hill towns and returning for a wonderful dinner in the evening and a chance to share jokes, philosophy, or family photos with dinner companions.

Marche Region
We are concluding a 10-day visit to La Tavola Marche Ca'Camone in the hilly Marche region of Italy. It has been a delight and worth mentioning on the Graffiti Wall (info@latavolamarche.com). In fact, worth mentioning in the guidebook, but that's up to Rick. Settled in a charming area within reach of Rick's hill towns (Urbino is particularly close), it has felt like a piece of heaven. Ashley and Jason, American expatriates who bought the property 3 years ago, run a cooking agriturismo and offer meals and classes that are to die for. Authentic Italian food (Jason is an accomplished cook and has accumulated a bundle of local recipes) and warm hospitality make it a worthy destination in our minds. Meals spent talking to fellow travelers has been particularly pleasant. Locals even come here for their special events: we shared dinner with a birthday party of 10 just a couple nights ago.

Italy Farm Stay, Sora, Italy, 2 hours from Rome and Naples
Italy Farm Stay (italyfarmstay.com) offered me the fantastic opportunity to take an hour long horse ride at OK Corral, just a 10-15 minute drive from Sora, a town located 2 hours south of Rome and 2 hours north of Naples. The horses were so friendly that even a beginner like me found the experience enjoyable memorable! When we first arrived at the ranch, we were introduced to our leader, a real Italian cowboy! We received instruction on how to start, stop, and turn a horse, and then we were all given the opportunity to practice with a skilled instructor watching. After being helped up onto the saddled horses, we took off along a path through beautiful trees and across a river! We saw an old castle, an altar, and even a bit of modernity as we very briefly passed under a car road. The horses are very adept at following the lead horse; they start immediately when the lead horse walks, even in the middle of a mouthful of shrubbery, as they always take the opportunity to eat the greenery when you stop! Passing through the river is such fun atop a trusted horse; at first I was a little wary, but by the end, walking through the river was my favorite part. The route crosses the river about 4 times, so your feet may get a little wet. After completing the ride, the cowboy hosted us for some afternoon coffee and a Garth Brooks music video! I felt right at home, and I think even the Australians and English in my party enjoyed it as well! We also were able to see the many trophies and photographs of his son from his barrel-racing competitions. Our host never stopped smiling, and neither did we! Even if you have previously never ridden a horse, this is a wonderful option to include on your itinerary.

Fattoria Tregole in Tuscany
We recently returned from a stay in the Tuscany region of Italy at Fattoria Tregole in Castellina in Chianti. Edith and her staff run a first rate operation with excellent friendly service, spotless rooms and the occasional evening dinner. Edith made a point to discuss the daily travel plans with each of her guests to make sure they had the best day possible and had excellent dinner suggestions for those nights dinner wasn't available for purchase at her B&B. I would highly recommend Fattoria Tregole to anyone who wants a nice central location between Florence and Siena.

Tuscany / Val d'Orcia
Le Casine de Castello is a sister property to the beautiful agriturismo of Cretaiole, owned and run by the wonderful Moricciani family. We stayed in "El Nido" which is Italian for "The Nest". It is the bottom unit for this two unit apartment. There was plenty of space for two people and it is decorated with a charming and romantic mix of rustic antiques. The bathroom was big and had the best shower of all the places we had stayed at on our 33 day tour of Europe. Just bring your own toothbrush and toothpaste as everything else is provided. ( I will say here that I noticed there is no such thing as a washcloth anywhere in Europe... bring your own if you need one) The bedroom area was so nicely appointed with beautiful linens, plenty of pillows and extra cozy blankets if you needed them. The bed was a little firmer than I'm used to but was still very comfortable. The kitchen had everything you could need to fix a nice meal. (There is no oven but honestly, why would you want one... you're on vacation!) You can eat inside at a great antique farmhouse table or dine outdoors in the lovely private garden. Isabella Moricciani has put together a full list of activities for her guests that you can pick and choose from but DO NOT miss the "Picci Night" where you learn to make pasta and then everyone has a wonderful dinner together, with the fruits of your labor. Make plans, if you can, to partake in dinner at the Monastery too! The location is central to everything you might want to see and do in the Tuscan region and Isabella has prepared wonderful itineraries for day trips you might want to take. Do yourselves a huge favor and become a part of the Moricciani family for a week or more, you are guaranteed a wonderful stay!

La Falconara, Montepulciano - Tuscany
We are a family of two adults and one 8 year old child. For the two weeks in July 2010 that we spent here, we found La Falconara ;www.lafalconara.it; to be a home away from home and perfect base to explore Tuscany and parts of Umbria. The property lives up to the website impression. The hosts are a perfectly matched couple perfectly matched to the agriturismo business. Alex is a 21st century renaissance man, well educated and conversant on many subjects. Ingrid is the thoughtful, intelligent and gentle lady of the house. They are what make this agriturismo a diamond among the plentiful others. Nothing is too much trouble for them. Daytrip suggestions, ";insider tips,"; concert tickets, travel publications, restaurant reservations;important especially at dinner time in this area; – whether requested of them or simply offered by them, are all provided with a genuine desire that the guest have the best experience possible. The building is a converted stone farmhouse and as such is situated in the midst of vineyards and olive groves. There are three very clean, well fitted apartments;oven, stove, sink, small fridge, dishwasher, cutlery, table service, toaster, coffee maker, etc;. Many evenings, we chose to have a light meal at home on our private patio and drink in the magical scenery drenched in sunlight only possible in Tuscany. Our son was happy to explore the grounds, make friends with the felines, and swim in the refreshing pool. Try some of their own wines, olive oil and other homemade products. You will be changed and possibly spoiled to ever go back to what was known before. What else can we say......we already have two weeks reserved for next summer! I am happy to answer any questions through my personal e-mail account.

Agriturismo Cretaiole
Isabella, Luciano, and family work hard to create a wonderfully memorable experience in their beloved Val d'Orcia region of Tuscany. We stayed in a small apartment in Castelmuzio, which provided the perfect amount of privacy and independence while also being quite close to activities and sights. Isabella creates a wealth of opportunities to engage with the people and their products during the weeklong stay (wine growers, artists, chefs) in addition to her good recommendations of local sights, restaurants, drives, and walks. And we really liked that we were always welcome to do as many or as few activities as we liked. Our favorites: Gregorian chant at an 1100-year old monastery, thermal hot springs, enjoying an outdoor community feast in the tiny and charming town of Montisi, learning to make pici with Isabella, Federico's wine tour and excellent lunch in Montalcino, and on and on. Really too many highlights to list. We felt completely at home, thoroughly welcomed, and delighted with our experience both relaxing and engaging with local people, sights, foods. In short, if you want the standout week of the year with lovely, warm people, breathtaking scenery, and every invitation to relax, unwind, and enjoy life, go see Isabella and co. at Cretaiole.

A Gem in Pienza, Tuscany
we were so lucky to find a gem in Le Casine di Castello, a 2 bedroom apartment (there is also a 1 bedroom apartment in the same house) owned by the Moricciani family who also own Cretaiole near Pienza, Tuscany. The apartment is situated in the very small and delightfully charming village of Castelmuzio, close to Pienza and to Cretaiole, the family's main agritourismo where residents of the apartment can participate in an abundance of activities such as pasta making classes, wine tasting, olive oil tasting, etc. etc. We were given a very warm and genuine welcome by Isabella who gave us a personal tour of the apartment and information on the local area. The apartment is also close to a number of the hill towns in Tuscany, a comfortable day's drive to visit many of them. The apartment is completely equipped with coffee, tea, olive oil (from their own farm), it is charmingly decorated, spacious and has fantastic views. You will find the apartment through their main website, www.cretaiole.it

Agriturismo Savernano, Vaggio-Reggello 30 minutes south of Firenze
Agriturismo Savernano Loc. Savernano 50066 Vaggio - Regello www.agriturismosavernano.it E-mail: info@agriturismosavernano.it

Just returned from two funfilled weeks in Italy. This was my husband's first visit there so I did extensive research before selecting five wonderful places to stay at over a two week period. Of course, Rick Steve's book is an excellent starting point and a wonderful reference to have on hand for so many facets of planning your vacation.

The research for the ideal Agriturismo took me the longest to explore as there are numerous locations all over Italy and most are small family owned businesses. We wanted to stay in the Tuscany region and have access to visiting the city of Firenze (Florence). We had a rental car and enjoyed touring the Tuscan countryside by car, yet we definitely wanted to follow Rick Steve's advice and NOT take a car into Firenze. You don't want to be near any large Italian cities driving your own vehicle!!

So after numerous hours of online searches, we found Agriturismo Savernano. Of the five places we visited on this trip, this one was the lowest cost per night,at 100 Euros which included a beautiful buffet breakfast on their lovely terrace. As we approached their grounds, you drive up and around a long winding road until you reach this gorgeous large home at the very top with expansive views in every direction! The covered parking is simple, they only have eight rooms, so the place almost feels like you are visiting family on their grand estate.

The grounds are immaculate, every detail is managed with such great care. The air is so fresh as we step out of the car and walk past the immense sparkling swimming pool overlooking the Tuscan countryside. We walk to the house where the owner David warmly greets us and leads us up a few steps to our room. The room has high ceilings, decent space, wooden furniture and a charming window covered with lace curtains gazing out to beautiful vistas right from our room. The bathroom is immaculate and also a good size (by European standards) with the upper part of the walls painted a relaxing aqua turquoise and a rainfall showerhead in the shower.

Dinner is served on their outdoor terrace and the ambiance is nothing short of spectacular. David offers us a bottle of his red Chianti wine, made right there on the premises for a generous 3 Euros a bottle. It was so excellent that we carried two bottles home with us back to California. We spent three nights there and dinner was 18-19 Euros a person. Again certainly great value for dining outdoors by candlelight. The experience was like no other.

The Agriturismo Savernano though feeling remote from everyday life, is conveniently located ten minutes by car from the Figline Valdarno train station stop. Parking is free and Firenze's Santa Maria Novella (S.M.N.) is about 25 minutes away, no change of trains. Once you are in Firenze, all the main sights are within walking distance.

The Agriturismo Savernano is so quiet and peaceful, you may not want to leave at all. Perfect for couples and families. I think that we were the only Amercians there, which also added to the foreign intrigue.

Cretaiole - Tuscany
Being in Tuscany, Cretaiole has the views, the location, and the total feel of the region. It is up to the visitor to then embrace the life and culture of Italy and the Tuscany region. This is really quite easy, once you get to know the Moricciani family, the proprietors of Cretaiole.

Never have I been to a place where the customer has been so thoroughly thought of and taken care of. If you are looking for a pool, spa, amusement park, shopping malls, golf, or other items one might normally look for in a vacation, Cretaiole is not for you. But, if you want to taste and feel what it is to be an Italian, to understand their way of life, embrace their culture, then their is no finer place than Cretaiole. It is as wonderful for adults of all ages as it is for kids with plenty of room for them to run and enjoy. The carefuly selected activities that Isabella Moricciani has so wonderfully brought to the visitor are a rare glimpse into the past, present and future of Italy, the Tuscany region, Pienza, the small town that has and is everything that is Italian, and Cretaiole. Many of these activities are only available through Cretaiole - all you need do is to mention Isabella or Cretaiole and a smile comes to the Italian face and you are made welcome and become a friend immediately.

To one and all, never fear for the Moricciani family is always near when you visit Cretaiole and the life and culture of Tuscany.

This bed and breakfast is located at the foot of the Abruzzi National Park, with all the benefits of the tranquility of the countryside. The buildings are rustic and beatiful, made out of stone which keeps things cool in the summer. Here you wake up to the sound of birds and a breath of fresh air. Breakfast is served on a beautiful terrace with a spectacular view of the mountains, and the jam they use is even homemade. Anna is always willing to help, and is always in the hosting spirit. She has chickens and ducks and often gives the guests their eggs for breakfast. The B&B is conveniently located between Naples and Rome and is easily accessible with public transport. Eventhough this B&B is rustic, the rooms, kitchen, and all other areas are kept incredibly clean. Plus, there is also a comunal kitchen, so that you can prepare your own food, and WiFi. I will definitely be back next time I want to relax in a beautiful, natural environment, away from the turist hubs. Check out their website Italycountrystay.com

Italy Farmstay in Abruzzi National Park
Italy Farmstay is a welcoming agriturismo located in the mountains between Rome and Naples. It lends itself to a relaxing environment, many beautiful day hikes, and eating with long tables and good company, Italian-style. The family (Antonello, Linda, Maria, and Giuseppe)is extremely entertaining and accommodating. Though the setting is tranquil, there are plenty of country activities and diverse guests around the farm, ensuring that there's never a dull moment. It offers both a lot of action and the slower-paced life of Southern Italy. The farm is complete with animals, gardens, and fruit trees, to be explored by both families and solo travelers. I would highly recommend Italy Farmstay to anyone looking for an authentic rural Italian experience because, as Giuseppe would say, "la vita è troppo bella."

Agriturismo Aiole
We highly recommend Agriturismo Aiole for anyone looking for lovely accommodations in the beautiful Val Orcia section of Tuscany. The rooms were spotless and charmingly decorated. The bathrooms were also very clean and well-equipped--only issue was that the stall shower was on the small side. There is no air conditioning, but each room had a very powerful standing fan, and we slept like logs on the extremely comfortable beds. Paolo speaks English and was the perfect host! He couldn't have been more helpful (they even did a laundry for us) and gave us great tips on places to visit for our daily itineraries. Breakfast outdoors on the patio, surrounded by the incredible Tuscan landscape and looking out onto the pristine swimming pool, was delightful. We also arranged to have two delicious dinners at Aiole, and felt like members of the family as we sat at their dining room table. For a peaceful stay in the most beautiful countryside you could ever imagine, try Aiole!

Via Piana
After spending time in the hectic cities of Rome and Naples, it was so good to retreat to country life at Via Piana. The place is off the beaten path of most tourists. I was amazed by the fact that everyone (and I do mean everyone) has their own grape vines and olive trees – homemade wine and olive oil are two of the best perks of staying here. Many people also keep their own animals and grow fruits and vegetables. I was there in July and we had lettuce from the garden and fresh eggs almost every day. Other highlights were fresh figs, plums, and ricotta cheese.

I loved being literally at the foot of the Apennine Mountains which sweep up to the sky all around. Besides the amazing views from the house, I took in the sights on several different hikes. There’s a moderate hike to an old abandoned castle, a more adventurous hike to a waterfall, and an amazing overnight hike to the top of a nearby mountain. For a more leisurely experience, I also went horseback riding.

At Via Piana, I enjoyed these unique surroundings from a spacious and comfortable room. Breakfast was so good – thanks to the farm-fresh eggs, a bit more substantial than a typical Italian breakfast. Later in the day I was able to use the up-to-date kitchen to prepare meals as I wished. And I definitely appreciated the free wireless! If you want to see what life is like in rural Italy, this is the place to do it.

Le Casine di Castello, Castelmuzio, Tuscany
This was our second stay with the Moricciani family at their wonderful accommodations in the heart of the beautiful Val D'Orcia. We stayed in their studio apartment in Castelmuzio, a charming small village a ten minute drive from Pienza. The apartment was perfect with a lovely patio area for an al fresco meal, beautiful decor throughout, well stocked kitchen and spacious bath. The village had a supermarket and an excellent restaurant, Locanda di Castelmuzio, both with the friendliest owners. We were invited to participate in all the activities at Agriturismo Cretaiole. Isabella and Carlo Moricciani are outstanding hosts committed to creating a "Tuscan experience"for all their guests. We dined on local specialties, learned about wine, pecorino cheese and olive oil from the experts, dined at a local monastery and made the unique pici pasta together for our group dinner at Cretaiole. Isabella's tour book about all the area hill towns is an invaluable guide to seeing the "real Tuscany" off the typical tourist trail and dining in local restaurants. If we are travelling to Tuscany again, we will stay with Isabella and family and recommend both Agritourismo Cretaiole and Le Casine di Castello to anyone visiting this spectacular area.

La Frallarenza
La Frallarenza near Orvieto in southern Umbria is a real gem. There are only two apartments, so it's a very intimate experience; the owners are incredibly sweet people and the place has all you might want -- well-appointed apartments, a warm swimming pool, cooking classes and peace and quiet. We had a blast staying here and exploring the amazing surroundings. The five days we stayed were nowhere near long enough.

Great Experience in San Gimignano!
We want to tell everybody about our experience in Tuscany. Following friend's report we decided to book a farmhouse in San Gimignano and found Podere la Marronaia. What a wonderful plce and delicious hosts! The farm produces wines and extra virgin olive oil too all following the organic methods, that's a plus for us. The landscape, the location, the flats and the atmosphere were perfect. So, following what our friend did with us, we suggest you a stay at Podere la Marronaia or a visit to their cellar. www.marronaia.com Hanna Burton, CA, Usa

Podere la Marronaia - San Gimignano
Podere la Marronaia in San Gimignano was the perfect location for our holidays in San Gimignano. The Podere owned by Silvia and Luigi with their children Corrado and Pietro, is a real paradise on hearth. Just 2,5 kms far from the center of San Gimignano, but immersed in the green landscape of vineyards. The building is very old dated 1200 around, but carefully restored few years ago and divided into very nice flats. The colours, the furnitures and the smell of the woods are all in perfect harmony with the location. The large garden with pool offered us good chances to relax, read, sleep and enjoy a glass of wine looking at the old towers in town. Silvia and Luigi told us they had a dream about this house and property: thanks Silvia and Luigi for sharing the result of all your efforts and your dream with us! Wish we can be back one day. J&L,LA

Eating near Italy Farm Stay Between Rome and Naples
My husband and I stayed at the Italy Farm Stay in April. It was lovely and comfortable and a refreshing break from our travels. Since we had a car and wanted to explore, Farm Stay owner Antonello recommended we have a meal at nearby Grotto della Locanda in Campoli Appennino. There, at a tiny family owned restaurant, we were welcomed generously and given an incredible lunch. It was a food highlight for our trip to Italy.

Poggiacolle
Stefano's famous last words as we charged into the office wondering how to get WIFI. We had some work to do and some research to do related to our visit in Tuscany. Poggiacolle was like a sedative. After a week we were just enjoying the amazing views around us and our big daily outing was to get a gelato! During our 10 day visit we were in three different room arrangements, apartment, studio and room. All were equally nice and clean and spacious!!! The only recommendations I would say was that the white sheets were preferable but it looks like the move to do change to that is underway. The two bedroom apartment could have used a little sitting area as the evenings were cool and we needed to sit inside and only wooden chairs and an uncomfortable sofa was available. The pool was the best and when temperatures rose the infinity pool and its surroundings were so enjoyable. Also the pool was not used by others until later in the day if at all. Kitchens were well equiped so making dinner and eating and drinking Poggiacolle's complimentary red and white wine and dipping bread in their complimentary olive oil out on the lawn was a special treat. We were glad we were near San Gigminano as it provided a nice destination for evening walks and all our day trips were an easy driving distance. Marcella provided a typical Italian breakfast in a lovely dining area. As Americans we tend to eat eggs and fruit and plain yogurt but that is not an Italian breakfast. Stefano provided us with great suggestions for restaurants and destinations that were not in the guide book which was lovely after seeing so many Rick Steeves look a likes in the popular destinations. WE had a wonderful week and would make a reservation there again because of all the positives mentioned above.

Agriturismo Cretaiole -Val d'Orcia
Isabella and her family share an intimate and authentic cultural experience of life in the Val d'Orcia region. It is as beautiful and sweet as I had imagined. Better even. A 7 day stay allows for time to get to know the other guests, and to experience a wide range of cultural activities that Isabella will arrange for you. The apartments are spacious, well appointed and very comfortable. And the views are spectacular. This is a very special place - I will definitely go back.

Abruzzo national forest
I stayed at the Italy Farm Stay on the edge of the Abruzzo national forest. It was only a two hour bus ride from Rome, but I felt like I was truly in the Italian countryside. It was beautiful. They have a lot of different activites that guests can do but my favorite was the overnight hike. There is a looming mountain that you can see from the farm and we made our way up to the very top and instead of a summit, there was an expansive valley. Needless to say, the view from here was absolutely amazing (I had to make a stop every ten minutes just to stare at it). The valley at the top looked to be one of the most remote places I had ever been. I felt like we were the only ones on the planet until I saw all of the cows and horses that farmers had brought up there to graze for the summer. It was kind of eerie to feel the cool breeze and see the sun slide behind the limestone cliffs and gentle tinkering of the cow bells. We made our way to the hut we would sleep in that night. It was a quaint stone hut left over from the days when shepards used dominate the valley. Its the only one left and has been preserves for use by hikers. There was also a cheese making shepard, not far from our hut, who spends his summer months in the valley, tending to his sheep and goats. We were welcomed to his little place and given a breif tour of the cheese making supplies and the many goats and sheep. Dinner that night was delicious rabbit (raised on the farm of course) grilled over the campfire, garden grown vegetables and homemade bread and wine. Awesome! The next morning we took a different path down through the forest and were able to see even more breath taking views. I really enjoyed this excursion because it was in such a remote and beautiful place like I had never been before. It was so interesting to visit the shepard and witness such a different lifestyle. It was as though we had gone back to a simpler time where people were really connected to the land and their work was hard and thier life less comfortable, but there was a certain appreciation for nature's beauty. I would recommend this farm and this hike to anyone who wants to experience the pleasures of a pure and simple lifestyle.

Truffle hunting and a wine tour at the Italian Farm Stay
I recently stayed at the farm with a group from my University and we had a great time. Two fun activities we did were truffle hunting and a wine tour. The truffle hunting was great, the dogs were so cute! We found a few truffles and made a delicious bruschetta. For the wine tour, we went to a nearby organic vineyard, learned how wine was made, tasted their different wines, and were able to buy some bottles. The vineyard was so beautiful and the wine delicious! The website: www.italyfarmstay.com

Perfection at Agriturismo La Cretaiole in Tuscan Wine Country
Isabelle Moricciani, the dynamic and stunning owner of Agriturismo La Cretaiole is the perfect hostess for a week of relaxation and low key events in the center of Italy's Tuscan wine country. La Cretaiole is high on the Tuscan Hills four miles from the medieval town of Pienza. This stunning renovated Agriturismo looks out over endless rolling hills and valleys and the suites are large and beautifully appointed. We dined at a nearby Monastery, visited hidden gems high in the hills, private gardens in a nearby valley, walked through private Catacombs and spent days visiting the wine centers of Montalcino, Montepulciano and vineyards in between. We were drawn to the cultural events in nearby Pienza and beyond and dined at some wonderful hidden gems in the Tuscan country side. One night, we stayed in and picked our vegetables from the Agriturismo La Cretaiole and mixed them with the pasta we made on the premises. Delicious homemade olive oil, bars of their homemade mauve olive soap and Lucciano’s famous grappa filled our suitcases. Carlo, Isabella's husband, shared his considerable knowledge and expertise with an evening of olive oil tasting. We appreciated the time he spent with us as he is a member of Siena's official olive oil council responsible for certifying the olive oils across the province. This is a beautiful home and location. My college daughter en route to Rome for her junior year in classics also loved every minute of her time here. Time at La Cretaiole is time very well spent.

Marche
We had a wonderful stay at La Tavola Marche. This agriturismo is owned by an adorable couple who love what they do and it showed!

The room was quite spacious and immaculately cleaned. We had a great view of the beautiful green rolling hills. So peaceful!

A meal with Jason is a must! We had the best Artichoke Risotto ever. We loved how everything was local or from there very own garden.

Ashley was very helpful with directions in navigating the area. We took several different day trips from the medieval hillside town of Gubio to shop filled beach town of Fano on the Adriatic. We definitely will make it back there in our future travels.

Tuscany, Italy
My wife and I recently stayed at Le Casine di Castello in Castelmuzio, Italy. This accommodation is linked to the agriturismo Cretaiole, which is located very near Pienza. Cretaiole is owned and managed by the Famiglia Moricchiani who live in Pienza. Isabella Moricchiani is the chief contact, hostess, itinerary planner, pasta-making and olive-oil tasting instructor, and all-around tour guide. We were provided with everything we needed to have a true Tuscan experience. We would recommend Isabella and Cretaiole/Le Casine di Castello to anyone desiring a self-structured stay in a picturesque setting.

B & B on working farm Sicily
Casale Rocca Fiorita www.casaleroccafiorita.it is between Kilometer mark 287 and 288 on SS115 near Vittoria in Sicily. My husband and I found it late one evening on the way to Syracusa. You turn right by the La Picozza Ristorante, also a nice place. The Casale is in a beautiful old farm building. Paola and Raffaelle are so kind and welcoming. Paola is a fine cook. Homemade bread with the breakfast. Their collection of folk art and farm implements is fascinating. The decor is better than House Beautiful. The garden is lovely. Makes a great base for seeing Ragusa, Noto, etc.

We stayed in an apartment in an old villa in Montalbino. A very small village in Tuscany. It was wonderful!!! Near Pienze
Six of us (4 adults and 2 children, 11 and 13) stayed in Le Casine di Catello in a small town near Pienze. The apartment was lovely, with many charming touches and extraordinary views of the Tuscan hills. In addition to the lovely accommodations what made our time spectacular was the warmth and graciousness of Isabella and the Moricciani Family who also own the agritourism Cretaiole. We were included in many of the wonderful offerings of the agritourism including visiting the working farm, learning about how wine and olive oil are made, tastings, making pasta, dinners, walks, etc. This is a special place and opportunity.

Cretaiole
Our one week stay at Cretaiole followed a busy week in Rome. As the Grandma, travelling with my 10-year old grandson and his parents, it was the perfect finale to an amazing trip to Italy. Highlights included the Romitorio (ancient Italy - awesome), Isabella's Pici-making class (and feast), an olive oil testing and an Easter Monday feast. Isabella, Carlo and Luciano were the quintessential hosts, always eager to answer questions, and always available. Between our hosts and the incredible views in Tuscany (not to mention the food and wine), I'd highly recommend this as an ideal stop on an Italian holiday.

Italy Farm Stay
I spent four days at Italy Farm Stay near Abruzzi National Park. After six weeks of jam packed backpacking it gave me the breathing space I needed. I spread my time between hiking, reading, relaxing, and learning how to make goat cheese! The family is really friendly and the food is super good. Italy Farm Stay in Lazio
My one agriturismo experience was at Italy Farm Stay in Pescosolido (right between Rome and Naples, about 2 hours inland from each place). The house was right next to the Abruzzi mountains, so I always started my day with a spectacular view. There was a small farmhouse with animals, all of whom were quite friendly; I rode Stella, the small farm horse, to the other farm about 15 minutes away. There were paths you can take to different parts of the farm, as well as into the main town of Sora. There were other things to do as well, like walking to a castle, wine tasting, and just exploring the town (there is a HUGE market on Thursdays). The family is friendly and very accomodating...not to mention Maria's food is fabulous! It's not everyday that you get to eat dinner with a real Italian family...and when there were other guests, I got to hear some great stories and learn a little bit of German and Dutch! There really isn't too much of a language barrier with the family (I got to practice my Italian, which was great). Weather-wise, it was surprisingly warm! Almost everyday was incredibly sunny and warm...which meant that I took lots of naps in the hammock! However, I'd advise to bring warm socks and a sweatshirt, as it gets a little chilly when the sun goes down. Overall, I'd say I had a wonderful, relaxing, and unique experience. I miss the friendly dogs, the diversity of people I met, and Maria's freshly baked bread! I would highly recommend this place (www.italyfarmstay.com).

If you're pondering where to stay, I urge you to look at the comments that have been made by travelers hosted by the wonderfully hospitable Moricciani family at http://www.cretaiole.it. You will enjoy Tuscany wherever you may stay, but if you want to feel as though you've been welcomed home by long known friends, consider staying with the Moricciani's. The location is a perfect launching place from travels to any direction and the quietness of the nights will only be disturbed by the soft sounds of clucking wild pheasants. Isabella has created some general travel itineraries that will give you a framework to enjoy small details of the region that would otherwise be missed. Your only regret will be that you can't stay longer.

Montepulciano, Tuscany
La Falconara, Farmhouse near Montepulciano, Tuscany Dates Visited: Jan 28-Feb 5, 2010.

Let me begin by telling you about the apartment itself. The apartment is located in a restored farmhouse, a total of 3 apartments. The location is unbeatable 5 minute drive into Montepulciano. From here we visited Pienza, San Quirico, Arezzo, Perugia, Orvieto, Cortona, Monticchiello, Assisi, Montalcino and Siena. The apartment was typical Tuscan style, very cozy, beautiful antique furnishings, very comfortable with a beautiful view. The kitchen was well equipped and we cooked most of our meals there. The bathroom was large and well equipped with plenty of hot water. The bedroom was large with lots of storage and a king size bed that was quite comfortable.

Now let me tell you about our experience at La Falconara. When I first contacted Alex the owner by email I knew immediately this was the place for us. His warm and friendly nature through our emails made me decide to book this apartment. Alex offered to meet us at the weekly farmer’s market the morning we arrived in order to make it easier for us to find the apartment. As soon as we met we hit it off immediately. He walked us around the market and introduced us to some vendors where we made our first grocery purchases to get us started. We then went for a cappuccino together where he gave us a brief overview of La Falconara and himself. Alex is fluent in English, as he lived in the U.S. at one time. Already by this time we were developing a friendship. Alex opened up his home to us, in the evenings we would get together in our apartment or even in his own home to discuss our daily adventures and he always offered us lots of helpful information and great ideas for places to visit and things to do. My husband and Alex would get involved in long conversations about wine making, which Alex was very knowledgeable about as he was a wine maker at one time. He also took us on a tour of the winery he once owned. Which brings me to the fabulous wines available at La Falconara. We purchased some wine from Alex and took it with us when we moved on to visit my husband’s family in another part of Itlay, it was certainly loved by all. Alex provided us with lots of books, brochures, maps etc. of the area and was always willing to share his knowledge of not only the area but of so many subjects. I must not forget to mention Alex’s wife Ingrid who is a wonderful women and who’s company we enjoyed as well. Alex went out of his way to help us with our cell phone which we had problems with when we arrived, both Alex and Ingrid let us use their home phone to call home at no charge to us. One time my husband mentioned to Alex he was looking for goat milk, the next thing we knew there was a bottle of goat milk sitting outside our apartment door.

Our holiday experience at La Falconara started out as being a touring vacation but ended up being one more of friendship, good wine, good conversation, and definitely great memories of a two wonderful people with big hearts. Going to Tuscancy has always been a dream of mine, Alex, Ingrid and our experience at La Falconara surpassed my dream. We will definitely return to La Falconara some day and would highly recommend it to everyone.

Agriturismo Frallarenza
I was looking to plan a two week stay in Umbria in order to explore small hilltowns. My main interest was to find a more "central" location to stay at the entire two weeks so we would be able to feel more like we were living in Italy, at least for a brief time. After reading all the wonderful postings on this site regarding Agriturismo Frallarenza, I determined this would be the perfect place to feel like home away from home. There is no way to describe how fortunate we were to have chosen Agriturismo Frallarenza for our two week vacation! Francesco and Serena are the most amazing hosts; helpful not only via email prior to our trip, but wonderfully welcoming once we arrived in Ficulle (area outside of Orvieto where the agriturismo is located). The cottage was clean and inviting, with all kinds of unique and beautiful touches, like hand-made pottery dishes by Serena. The beds were comfortable, with hypo-allergenic pillows (a big plus for me due to allergies to feathers). The rooms were large and airy, with more hand-made touches. Francesco provided us with several recommendations for great small hilltown areas, which turned out to be some of our favorite destinations (Sorano, Sovano, Pitigliano area for one). Serena provided us with some of the most mouth-watering home-cooked food. There just is no negative to staying here, and I will absolutely be returning. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in central Italy, since travel, to me, is more than just sight-seeing. If you have the opportunity to feel like you're part of the community, even for a short time, the trip takes on a whole new level of enjoyment. You absolutely could not go wrong staying with Francesco and Serena at Agriturismo Frallarenza!

L'Erba Persa Agriturismo in Levanto
L'Erba Persa Agriturismo in Levanto www.erbapersa.it

We loved our first stay of 4-5 nights so much that we returned later in our trip for another few days. Great old house. Wonderful family - Claudio and Grazia and their kids are great. Very hospitable whether it is picking you up from the train station which is just ten minutes walk away or making sure you end up at a hidden restaurant (amazing food) that naturally serves some of L'Erba Persa's organic grown vegetables! Delicious breakfast every morning. Easy to walk down into Levanto and explore the Cinque Terre area. Farm and grounds are extensive. I even was able to help pick olives during harvest. Don't know if everyone gets to do that. If you are a plant and animal lover this is a place for you. (If allergic to cats - perhaps not.) If you just need rest and peaceful views and vistas, a close stroll to the beach, the real coastal town life without all the tourists, again this is the place to stay and visit for a while. The real deal. Highly recommended.

Il Castelluccio
We stayed at a great agroturismo near the town of Barberino di Mugello, about 25 minutes north of Florence. The location is a bit remote, and for us it was hard to find, but certainly worth it. It is a "castle" and we had a lovely room that had two different views into the Tuscan hillsides. There is a restaurant as well, with a fixed menu each night of "real Tuscan" food. There is a lovely outdoor pool, that unfortuntely we didn't make use of because of the weather. We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 nights here.

Farm in the Abruzzi National Park
I stayed at Italy Farmstay for two weeks. Located between Rome and Naples, the surroundings are truly striking and not at all what I expected. You are surrounded on all sides by impressive snow-topped peaks and stone farmhouses dotting the countryside. Because this area is not on the usual tourist cycle, it offers you a unique, albeit intense, chance to submerse yourself in the lives of everyday Italians. The people that I met were all very friendly and willing to work with me, despite my slow and probably incorrect use of their language. People offered me rides, free cheese and wine, smiles, and general kindness. While I was there, I got to explore abandoned houses in the mountains, taste homemade gnocchi, pizza, pasta, bread, olive oil, wine, and eat fresh persimmons right from the tree. Local eateries cater to locals so you can see what life is like here. The farm itself is an actual working farm, not a glitzy resort or an upscale B&B. Giuseppe, Antonello's father, continually taught me (in Italian of course) that life is like a beautiful song, an idea that one should really embrace when coming here in order to enjoy it to the fullest. Staying here is not just a place to sleep, it is an experience. they have a website that is really easy to remember: italyfarmstay.com.

I stayed at the Italy Farm Stay and I had a fantastic time! The farm is very close to Rome and Naples(only two hours from both) with very good public transportation in between! The farm is located just outside of the town, Sora. Where you can be picked up or drive very easily. At the farm the family is very helpful and friendly. They also speak very good english which is helpful for us english speakers. While you stay you can really soak in the beauty of a true Italian farm. Guisepe, Antenello's father, is very kind and will show how the farm runs and functions. He will also help you with your italian. At the farm they make wine, olive oil, and grow many of the vegetables that you can eat. You can also go and watch cheese be made by the local sheperd. (really fun and tasty!) All in all this is a very connected farm with many great experiences for all. I leave it with high regards.

Poggiacolle, San Gimignano
We stayed at Poggiacolle Agriturismo in San Gimignano, Tuscany in September 2009. The host Stefano was superb, from the moment we booked, for directions when we got lost, allowing us to use the farm facilities, providing tips for the local area and making our stay so memorable. The farmhouse has spectacular views of San Gimignano, the pool a bonus on a hot day, and rooms were clean and comfortable. Breakfast was a little bit disappointing however I would not let that be a deterrent to staying here. There's excellent facilities for cooking your own meal, which when travelling can be appreciated. Also, take a car if you can, whilst your can easily walk to the old town from the farmhouse, it's handy to have if you decide to head into the old town at night or want to soak up the beautiful scenery that is abound in Tuscany. Thanks so much Stefano.
