Edmonds Bakery Here you can find all the standard American baked goodies — donuts, muffins, sandwiches and more. Their fresh French crullers made only on Saturdays are something special. Around the corner from the Travel Center at 418 Main St., 425/778-6811. Tue–Sat 7 a.m.–5 p.m., closed Sun–Mon.

Red Twig Bakery Café — The fresh pastries baked daily and gourmet coffee roasted on site are just a couple of reasons to try Red Twig for breakfast or lunch. Lunchtime specialties include sweet or savory crêpes, panini sandwiches and salads. Two blocks from the Travel Center at 117 Fifth Ave. S., 425/771-1200. Daily 7 a.m.–5 p.m., food served until 4 p.m.

Walnut Street Coffee — This retro-modern cafe takes its coffee and baked goods seriously, but also serves homemade soup and burritos for lunch. Look for the bright orange chairs in front. A five-minute walk from the Travel Center at 410 Walnut St., 425/774-5962. Mon–Fri 6 a.m.–6 p.m., Sat–Sun 7 a.m.–6 a.m.

The Resident Cheesemonger Cheese connoisseurs should head straight to this small, fragrant shop. Marvel at the variety, grab a sack ploughman's lunch (cheese, rustic bread, dried fruit) and consider picking up a wedge or two for friends, who're sure to be impressed. Waterfront Coffee Co. — This inviting, stay-a-while cafe offers Caffé Vita coffee, good cookies and ice cream in summer. Right by the ferry at 101 Main St., 425/670-1400. Daily 6:30 a.m.–6:30 p.m.

Petosa's Grocery StoreThis independent, family-owned grocery store is small, but has it all. Its salad bar is consistently fresh, and its deli serves up sandwiches and some hot dishes. A five-minute walk from the Travel Center at 550 Fifth Ave. S., 425/774-5244. Mon-Sat 7 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun. 7 a.m.–9 p.m.

Engel's Deli — Small and friendly, Engel's sandwich board lists the daily specials. Two blocks from the Travel Center at 115 Fifth Ave. S., 425/275-0581. Tue–Sat 11 a.m.–4 p.m., closed Sun–Mon.

Quiznos Sub Sandwich Shop — Edmonds has its own outpost of this national chain, which offers sizeable subs, salads and soups. In the Old Milltown shopping center at 201 Fifth Ave. S., 425/776-1000. Mon-Sat 10:30 a.m.–7 p.m., closed Sun.

Toshi's Teriyaki — The service is fast — and the tasty burgers are an open Edmonds secret. Between the Travel Center and the ferry at 311 Main St., 425/670-8122. Daily 10 a.m.–8 p.m.

Rory's Pub — A local favorite, Rory's offers a full bar in addition to many Northwest microbrews and imports on tap. All the standards are on the menu; frites fiends will go for the "Pound of Love," a one-pound basket of French fries. Near the ferry dock at 105 Main St., 425/778-3433. Johnny's Sports Bar — Right by the ferry docks, Johnny's is so close to the waterside railroad tracks that conversation stops until the train's gone by. The six plasma TVs make this place a hit on game day. Practically on the ferry dock at 101 Main St., 425/778-1585. Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–2 a.m., Sun 10 a.m.–2 a.m.

Claire's Pantry — Claire's is a classic diner, with a spinning dessert case and breakfast served all day. Turkeys are roasted daily for sandwiches, and their drinks might be one of the best deals around. Between the Travel Center and the ferry dock at 301 Main St., 425/776-2333. Mon–Sat 6 a.m.–9 p.m., Sun 8 a.m.–9 p.m.

Pancake Haus — Come for the old-school-quasi-German-diner ambience, stay for the scrumptious flapjacks. A five-minute walk from the Travel Center at 530 Fifth Ave S., 425/771-2545Mon–Fri 6 a.m.–3 p.m., Sat–Sun 6 a.m.–2 p.m.

Olives Gourmet Foods Café & Wine Bar At lunchtime, Olives whips up delicious gourmet sandwiches, salads and soups for dine-in or take-out. After 4 p.m., Olives dims the lights and serves up tapas-style small plates for dinner, along with a wide selection of wines and beer. Behind the Travel Center at 107 Fifth Ave. N., 425/771-5757. Mon–Wed 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Thu–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., closed Sun.

Las Brisas — Nearly hidden in the bland Harbor Square Mall, Las Brisas offers anything-but-bland Mexican cuisine. The menu includes many Mexican favorites like enchiladas and fajitas, but also offers more unusual choices, such as Halibut Ceviche Tostadas and bacon-wrapped prawns. A 10-minute walk from the Travel Center at 120 W. Dayton, 425/672-5050. Mon–Thu 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Sat noon–10 p.m., Sun noon–9 p.m.

El Puerto — Sitting squarely on a prime Edmonds corner, this trusty Mexican place makes Rick's favorite lunch, and popular happy-hour margaritas. Around the corner from the Travel Center at 425 Main St., 425/672-2469. Mon–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun 11 a.m.–9 p.m.

5th Avenue Grill House — This self-described "trendy burger joint" is known for its mouth-watering gourmet burgers, served for half-price on Mondays. Other daily specials make the Grill House a tough offer to refuse, and it even does weekend brunches. Just beyond Petosa's at 610 Fifth Ave. S., 425/776-1976. Mon–Fri 11 a.m.–8:30 p.m., Sat–Sun 11 a.m.–9 p.m.

Thai Cottage — Busy but always friendly, the staff here serves up good Thai food at reasonable prices. Lunch specials available Mon–Fri 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Around the corner from the Travel Center at 417 Main St., 425/774-3969. Mon–Thu 11 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun noon-9 p.m.

Chanterelle — Edmonds' unofficial gathering spot is a casual bistro with a myriad of breakfast, lunch and dinner options. The bright, woody interior has counter seating for solo diners, and the staff will pack up to-go orders if you're in a hurry. Don't miss their rich and delicious tomato bisque. La Galleria — Traditional Tuscan and Northern Italian dishes are served in this quaint Italian restaurant, tucked in an older strip mall. A five-minute walk from the Travel Center at 546 Fifth Ave. S, 425/771-7950. Daily 5 p.m.–10 p.m.

Girardi's Osteria Italiana — Girardi's is a good option for Italian food in an elegant setting (no pizza). A five-minute walk down from the Travel Center at 504 Fifth Ave. S., tel. 425/673-5278. Tue–Fri 11:30 a.m. –2 p.m. & 4 p.m.–10 a.m., Sat and Mon 4 p.m.–10 p.m., Sun 4 p.m.–9 p.m.

Daphne's Wine Bar — Serving "beer, wine and a little food," chic, tiny Daphne's is "a cross between Le Pichet and a shoebox" (The Seattle Times). Around the corner from the Travel Center at 415½ Main St., 425/776-6402. Daily 4 p.m.–midnight

Café de Paris — As its longtime clientele knows, this restaurant offers a rare chance to treat yourself to classic French cuisine (escargot, canard à l'orange) without breaking le banque.  Near the ferry dock at 109 Main St., 425/771-2350. Mon–Fri 11 a.m.–2 p.m. & 5 p.m.–9 pm., Sat–Sun 5:30 p.m.–9 or 10 p.m.    

Anthony's Homeport — Enjoy the seafood and stunning views from either the formal dining room upstairs, or the casual Beach Café downstairs. Reservations recommended. In the Edmonds Marina, a 15–20-minute waterside stroll from the ferry dock, 456 Admiral Way, 425/771-4400. Mon–Thu 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.–9 p.m.

Arnie's — Arnie's is also known for its seafood and offers an early-bird dinner special (Sun–Fri 4 p.m.–6 pm.). Just south of the fishing pier at the Edmonds Marina, 300 Admiral Way, 425/771-5688. Mon–Thu 11:30 a.m.–9 p.m., Fri–Sat 11:30 a.m.–10 p.m., Sun 10 a.m.–9 p.m., drinks until 11:30 p.m. daily.

Shell Creek — Diners at Shell Creek enjoy the intimate interior in addition to the superb food. The menu offers regional cuisine with Asian and Southwest influences, as well as wood-fired pizzas. Save room for their "To Die For" chocolate mousse. Just up from the gazebo at 526 Main St., 425/775-4566. Tue–Sat 4:30 p.m.–10 p.m., Sun 4:30 p.m.–9 p.m., closed Mon.

Baskin-Robbins — We're not sure what to make of its location across from a fitness center (?!), but on sunny days we all scream for ice cream. A 10-minute walk from the Travel Center at 614 Fifth Ave. S., 425/778-2005. Daily 11 a.m.–9 p.m.
