Loovely! Raves about Rick's Ireland Guides

Take a tour from any company, and you can count on your guide to be well-versed in art and history, and to run a tight ship. Rick Steves, however, expects much more from his travel teachers. Good...isn't good enough. Here are a few impressions from our Best of Ireland tour alums...

Declan Field

Declan Field was outstanding. His grasp of the sweep of Ireland's complex history as it overlaid the beautiful landscape was inspiring. He made this island's history and art come alive for us. He sang us Irish songs, played his guitar, read poetry to us, answered our questions, and expertly arranged our dining and lodging. He was always there. I think the highlights for myself and my college-aged daughter were his "lectures." On our last day driving into Dublin, Declan gave a moving talk about James Joyce, reading passages from Ulysses to us as we entered city.

Darbi Macy

Darbi Macy was EXCELLENT!! Darbi was a fount of information whether it was Irish history, geography, the Irish language, or anything about Ireland. She was also very personable. And, even though she was strict about timing (not being late getting on the bus) she was not overbearing about it. I think she handled our diverse group extremely skillfully.

Pat O'Connor

Pat O'Connor is an outstanding guide. His knowledge of history, art and the everyday pop culture in Ireland was fascinating. It really made my trip very special. He made a point to make personal contact with everyone on the tour. Pat uses high level leadership skills to bring together a group of strangers and help them feel connected to one another. I have seen only the best group leaders accomplish that task.

Stephen McPhilemy

Stephen McPhilemy was amazing! He added so much to the entire experience. His genuinely warm and friendly personality started the tour off right at our initial dinner. He provided us with history, myths, and local color for each area we visited. And, he added to our interaction with the towns people by teaching us songs to sing along with in the pubs (he has an amazing singing voice) as well as giving us insights into the customs in each area. And, since Stephen knew many of the local people in each destination he made us all feel like part of the local communities. Stephen took a bit of time getting to know each tour member and making sure that we were all having a great time.
