Dining Chez Monoprix
Rick Steves' guidebooks were our constant and faithful companions during our wonderful September trip to Paris and Alsace. Under the "Cuisine Scene in Alsace" section of Rick Steves' France 2008, it says, "Look for choucroute garnie...although it seems a shame to eat it in a fancy restaurant." Well, we take suggestions in Rick's guidebooks pretty seriously, so we were excited to find a great alternative to a "fancy restaurant" — the Monoprix grocery store in Colmar. It was a fresh (not frozen) microwave dinner — and it was delicious, especially accompanied by the obligatory bread and a glass of Alsatian gewürztraminer in our rented apartment! Saving a few euros while experiencing the local cuisine scene; it's a good (Rick Steves) thing!
