What route will you follow? By plotting your destinations on the "Rail Ticket Cost and Travel Time" map, you'll be able to connect the dots in a logical route. You'll find more detailed ticket cost maps like this scattered throughout this guide, and you'll find some handy itinerary planning tips and other transportation options.
How frequently will you be on the move? Count up your number of actual travel days (for example, staying 3 days in one city counts as no travel days, but a day spent connecting cities does). This will help you determine how many "flexi" days you may need (or whether a consecutive day rail pass may be better for your trip).
