Rome 2012 Guidebook
Best and worst sights, experiences and destinations:
Best: Borghese gallery
Why: We sat and had an espresso while waiting to go in and reviewed the wonderful descriptions in this pocket guide then supplemented the audio guide as we walked through.
Joan in Eatontown, NJ USA 01/06/2012
Best: Vatican city and art museum.
Why: By purchasing our art museum tickets online and arriving at your suggested time, 1 pm, no lines for museum and after visitiing Sistine Chapel was able to circumvent the long 2 1/2 hour line waiting to get into St. Peter's Church, which was awesome.
Larry Barstow in Buena Park, Ca USA 11/30/2011
Best: Group tour exit from Sistine
Why: It was closed, but no one was watching and we just slipped out. Quite a time-saver.
Terri in Quilcene, WA USA 11/26/2011
Best: Gulliver's Lodge
Why: Mary! We had a lovely room. It was an easy walk from the main train station and central to almost everything we wanted to do. Mary even stored some bags for us while we explored the rest of Italy and took us to her favorite shoe store when we wanted to locate shoes like hers.
Worst: Getting into the Forum
Why: Somehow we got into the wrong entrance and thus your audio tour of the Forum was backwards and we were totally confused. Not your fault really

Why: We didn't have tickets and thanks to the book we got unattended tickets!

Why: She was able to bring Rome to life and make our trip memorable in everyway!!! I cannot say enough good things about this yound lady and her passion for Rome and her ability to communicate.

Best: Night Walk across Rome
Why: Great experience to see these enchanting sites at night!
Peter Fabriele in Scotch Plains, NJ USA 10/20/2011
Best: Driverinrome
Why: Of the eight in our party, two had challenges with walking very far. Driverinrome made it possible for us to see all seven of the sites in Rome we most wanted to see - and in one day, in comfort, safety and style!
Sharon Zoller in Ridgefield, WA USA 10/16/2011
Best: Santa Church Maria in Trastevere
Why: It was large but not at all overcrowded. The church inside was absolutely beautiful, and is one used by the residents of Trastevere. No crowds/no lines!
Cindy Luis in Cambria, CA USA 10/07/2011
Best: safety
Why: It was just exactly he said it, specifically traveling in the local train.
Worst: train
Why: pickpocket
Yolanda in New York, NY USA 10/03/2011
Best: Tour with Cristina Giannicchi
Why: See above.
Christina Williams in McLean, VA USA 09/20/2011
Best: Rome Night Walk
Why: The small map connecting the Spanish Steps, Treve Fountain, and the Panthenon was great, add we loved the recommended coffee shop.
Dennis Helander in White Bear Lake, MN USA 09/12/2011
Best: The forum, Colosseum, Palatine Hill, National Gallery and Borghese Gallery / Villa
Why: My two teenage boys loved it all. They were very intersted in the history and believe it or not the historical accuracy of some of their video games had them looking for familiar sites (Assassins Creed etc).
Worst: Mixed feelings about the Vatican, ST Peters and the Trevi Fountain
Why: Well, we are tourists and we DID add ourselves to the massive crowds but these sites are crowded to the point where it starts to be the predominant consideration. DO buy your Vatican pass online as recommended by Rick Steves otherwise you'll be part of the 2 km/ 4-6 hr lineup that we by-passed.
John in Kingston, On Can 09/04/2011
Best: Jewishroma tours
Why: We recently returned from a trip to Rome and a Holy Land cruise and participated in many tours during our 16 days abroad. The absolutely best tours we took were the ones offered through Jewishroma - the Synagogue/Jewish Ghetto/ Jewish Museum tour and the tour of the Vatican. From initial inquiry to the end of both of our tours, everything was handled in a most professional and courteous way. The tours themselves were incredibly interesting, and the fact that we were part of a small group allowed us to question the guides at length and gear the pace of the tour to our needs. The tour guides - Yael and Daniela were extremely personable, knowledgeable, and made the tours really come alive for us. It is true that these tours are more expensive than those offered by other companies, but you get what you pay for and these tours were worth every cent. We highly recommend them to anyone planning to visit Rome.
Gail in Pomona, NY USA 08/24/2011
Best: Through Eternity Private Tour
Why: If you're heading to Rome or any part of the world where you want to understand and appreciate its history (and don't have enough time to read most of the important facts before your visit), I approve Rick Steve's recommended tour guide company, Through Eternity. We had a private/customized archaelogical tour and Vatican tour and the kids appreciated the interactive, informative, imaginative, sometimes even theatrical and funny walk through Ancient Roman history.
Luca De Angelis and Mario Baas were excellent!
Californian Traveler in San Rafael, CA USA 08/19/2011
Best: St. Peter's Basilica and Borghese Gardens
Why: The view alone (and challenging hike up all those steps to the cupola of St. Peter's) was worth my entire trip to Rome. After the heat and crowds of the Vatican Museum, the Borghese Gallery was a nice change of pace. Not crowded, breath-taking statues, but you do need to reserve your tickets about a week ahead of time.
Worst: San Gimignano
Why: Extremely touristy and hot, really nasty public toilet just outside the walls. Overpriced little shops. I tried to look past the crowds and just focus on the architecture, but it was tough. Much preferred the small, quaint town of Radda with its well-located gelato shop (TONS of flavors).
Cynthia in Wellesley, MA USA 08/18/2011
Worst: Hosteria dei Bastioni - Rome
Why: This restaurant was a huge disappointment! The sign on the outside wall said recommended by Rick Steves, but it was the worst eating experience we had during a 2-week stay in Rome. The food was a very poor value: The bread basket was a 3 euro charge for a couple of slices of poor quality bread. The food was overpriced for the portion size and very average or below average quality. The only redeeming element about the place was that it was close to the Vatican Museum. Although, that was no excuse for a poor restuarant. Around the corner across the street from the Vatican Wall was the best and most generous gelato place in Rome. I was let down with the Rick Steves' endorsement which I normally trust completely. Please remove from your book if you have not done so already. Though I suppose you cannot make them take down the sign with your name on it.
Jackie in St. Paul , MN USA 08/07/2011
Worst: Vatican Museums
Why: Suggest that those to fork over the outrageous fee for the Vatican arrive about 8:45 or you will tsand there while groups get in.
John Fischer in Louisville, KY USA 08/03/2011
Best: Hotel Montreal, Rome
Why: After about 20 years of traveling and relying on the RS guides, I really haven't ever been let down. When plans with friends fell through I found myself suddenly without a place to stay i Rome at the end of July. Pasquale at Hotel Montreal immediately found me a room that met all my RS expectations: friendly, HELPFUL, clean, comfortable, safe location...and breakfast too!
Worst: cell phone
Why: Should have been easy, I thought... but: SIM cards from Vodafone were 35 Euro and up. TIM would not work in my 4band, unlocked Blackberry due to something proprietary (hardware or software, didn't understand the Italian) so I was left with Wind, 15 Euro/2 cards. The problem was (and I heard this from many other travelers) it didn't always function. Sometimes the message would be "incorrect number" and other times "inexistent number" and other times the call would go through. Not reliable and very frustrating.
Judy in Boulder, CO USA 08/01/2011
Best: Driverinrome tour company
Why: Our tour guide was outstanding. He was informative, polite, and helpful. Our tour that day was to Pompei and Capri, and we couldnt have navigated these places on our own. He showed us the best of both. He always bought our tickets ahead of time, so we never waited in line. We highly recommend this company.
Worst: Athens
Why: I was pickpocketed on the subway in Athens. Money and credit cards stolen. Athens is just another big, crowded, polluted city whose only draw is the Acropolis. Totally not worth it.
Susan Roth in Las Vegas, NV USA 07/24/2011
Best: Marzia
Why: We booked Marzia through Cristina Giannicchi and she was phenomenal. Marzia was patient, knowledgeable and entertaining. We were able to see a lot in a limited time and had a lot of fun. It was also cheaper than taking a cruise tour. Thank you Cristina and Marzia !
Daniel Uchman in Toronto, On Canada 07/16/2011
Best: Cristina Giannicchi
Why: We hired Cristina to take us on her Ancient Rome tour based on a suggestion in your Rome 2011 guide. She was fantastic!! She has an amazing knowledge of the content she is presenting and she is extremely friendly and personable. She really made Ancient Rome come to life for us with her knowledge, stories and transparencies. There is so much about Rome we would have missed or not appreciated if we had not taken her tour. It was like touring Rome with a great friend. Thank you for the wonderful reccommendation.
Holly in Tampa, FL USA 07/11/2011
Worst: Gelateria Caffe Pasticceria Giolitti
Why: This is a terrible place to bring kids. Our kids couldn't see the flavors since it was so crowded. Once it was our turn to order the big Italian guy waiting on us yelled over and over for us to make our order since he had other customers waiting. We weren't taking long, he was just simply treating us rude. He proceeded to give the kids the wrong kinds. They were so upset from the whole experience they cried the whole way home. I would never go back there and don't think it's anywhere near the best place to get gelato in Rome. We have tried many places and this one hands down was the worst. It was the worst we were treated in Rome by far. Everyone else has been at least descent or very nice.
Kathy in Mpls, MN USA 06/29/2011
Best: Guide Cristina giannicchi
Why: Cristina was a pure delight. She was our guide for Vatican and St Peters also The Colosseum and Palatine. Cristina was so knowledgeable and has a passion for history of Rome. We felt like we made a wonderful new friend!
Debbie morgan in Benton, Ky USA 06/28/2011
Best: Tour with Cristina Giannicchi
Why: My wife and I took a tour of the Forum, Colleseum, Patheon and other sites with Christina Giannicchi. Her knowledge of all the sites was excellent. She was well prepared and she enriched out trip to Rome. I highly recommend her.
David Urich in Centertown, MO USA 06/28/2011
Best: All of Rick's Rome podcasts: St. Peter's, the Forum, Trastevere Walk, etc.
Why: It's so much easier to listen to Rick's podcasts as you walk, instead of trying to read a guidebook. We used them all over Italy (and in Paris last year.) They added immensely to our travel experience.
Worst: N/A
Why: We enjoyed all the recommended sights.
Lynette in Brooksville, FL USA 06/25/2011
Best: Basilica Santa Prassede
Why: Even though it only gets a brief mention in the Rome book, this place is jaw-droppingly beautiful for its mosaics. A must for anyone who appreciates that art form.
Michael in Seattle, WA USA 06/22/2011
Best: Pantheon
Why: Evokes the Roman past better than any other
Paul Roberts in Stockholm, - Sweden 06/20/2011
Best: Cristina Giannicchi as a tour guide
Why: Our family went on the Ancient Rome walking tour with her and it was amazing. She brought a notebook of how building and things actually looked in ancient times and made everything so interesting. I would highly recommend her to anyone wanting a private tour guide in Rome. She was fantastic!
DeAnn McGraw in Midland, TX USA 06/13/2011
Best: Borghese Gallery Tour
Why: It was full of amazing sculptures that you could get up close and personal with. It wasn't as crowded as the, also amazing, Vatican Museum. I learned a lot about Bernini's sculptures and life. The setting in the beautiful Borghese gardens makes for a lovely afternoon.
Worst: Trevi Fountain
Why: Our hotel was right by Trevi Fountain (B&B Trevi which I highly recommend). We walked past it several times and there wasn't a time it wasn't swarming with people. We could never get close enough to throw coins in because it was too crazy.
Katie Yingling in Lubbock, TX USA 06/11/2011
Best: Borghese Gallery
Why: We booked tickets in advance for the Borghese, which was fantastic because when we got there at our appointed time, all entrance time slots were completely sold out for the next week! We would have missed the Borghese completely, and that would have been a real loss. It was my favourite museum in Rome.
Kathleen Davidson in Calgary, AB Canada 06/07/2011
Best: Colosseum and Vatican Museum
Why: Because we had great local guides.
Mary in San Francisco, CA USA 06/06/2011
Best: Colosseum and Vatican Museum
Why: Because we had great local guides!
Worst: National Museum of Rome
Why: We were underwhelmed. While it was interesting . . . it wasn't in the same league as your other 3 triangle attractions for Rome.
Mary in San Francisco, CA USA 06/06/2011
Best: Residenza Arco dei Tolomei
Why: Welcoming Guest House which is within walking distance of all main events in Rome. Large rooms decorated with antiques and a very good breakfast taken seated around a large table where Marco - the host -and other guests talked through their plans for the day and where experiences could be exchanged. Very friendly and help staff and overall an excellent experience. Thoroughly recommended.

Best: San Clemente
Why: Not as crowded as the more popular sights so we felt like we were discovering something everyone else doesn't see.
Worst: Vatican Museum
Why: This place is so mobbed with tour groups it was hard to enjoy the artwork.
Frank in Washington, DC USA 05/26/2011
Best: Scavi Tour under St. Peter's Basilica
Why: The tickets have to be reserved weeks if not months ahead, but it was amazing to be wandering through a necropolis that contained both Christians and pagans buried at the same time. The English language guide provided as part of the tour was awesome. Her name was Giorgia.
Michael in Seattle, WA USA 05/25/2011

Best: Pompeii
Why: Worth the beautiful train ride down the countryside; easy to access and very moving (Best tip - reservations for Vatican museum)
Worst: Colosseum & Palatine Hill
Why: No bad destinations in Rome; this was just the least intriguing to us.
Sheila Redling in Huntington , WV USA 05/22/2011
Best: Touring with Cristina Giannicchi
Why: Cristina was fantastic! We're so glad we found her in the guidebook. She was personable and professional and made our tour of the Forum, Coloseum, and Palatine Hill the highlight of our trip to Rome.
Dana Easley in Clarendon Hills, IL USA 05/16/2011
Best: Michelangelo's "David" and all Bernini scuptures
Why: Absolutely breathtaking! Also, the Borghese Gallery.
Victoria in Orinda, CA USA 04/10/2011
Best: "Guest House Arco dei Tolomei"
Why: This is a magical place with a team of magical hosts. - not your ordinary B & B.
Mark Lincoln in Boston, MA USA 03/30/2011
Best: Rome.
Why: Impressive beauty, history.
Worst: May be Napoli
Why: It was not a tourist friendly to other people on our cruise ship; a lady was run over by a scooter to be robbed, and a couple was deprived from their money, credit cards and documents, just about walking to the ship. It is worthy to hire tour/transport services when the tourist is new to the place.
Alben in Clermont, fl USA 03/22/2011
Best: List: St Peter's Basilica, the Colosseum and Roman Forum, Borghesey Gallery, The Trevi Fountain and the Night Walk Across Rome,
Why: The Colosseum...need I say more! It was insane! The cross at the 50 yard line was pretty cool too. We just couldn't get over that place. We cannot wait to go back! The Roman Forum was very interesting...a walking trip back in time. St. Peter's Basilica was my favorite bar none. Simple yet grand, ornate yet not gaudy. Lovely. And the trip below to the excavations! That was a humbling and amazing experience. The Borghesey Gallery was our favorite museum. It was really well laid out, fascinating and not too long. The Trevi had to be one of the coolest things ever. No one can describe it and be able to give you a mental image that even comes close! And the energy there is unbelievable. We went every night to mingle and always had something new to see or experience. The night walk is just nice, romantic, and historic. We enjoyed it.
Worst: National Museum of Rome
Why: BORING. Lots of headless statues, tons of heads without bodies and the world's largest coin collection. Needless to say we didn't stay long.
Shannon Fonferko in Schaumburg, IL USA 03/20/2011
Best: Ostia Antica
Why: We had visited a number of sites in Rome previously. The information on Ostia Antica encouraged us to venture a little out of Rome and we loved this historical site. The mosaic floors, the ruins, the pines lining the walkways. It was so evocative of the past.
Dorothy Beagley in Adelaide, SA Australia 03/19/2011

Dorit in BS, CH 03/15/2011

Why: Stress free
Lesley in san francisco, CA USA 03/06/2011
Best: Catacombs of San Callisto
Why: Excellent, excellent tour. Worth the 6 euro.
Worst: Ostiva Antica
Why: Guided tours should be offered. It is just too much to try to digest on your own with a guide book.
Mary Coyle in Kansas City, MO USA 03/03/2011
Best: Jewish Roma tour of Jewish Ghetto
Why: Jewish Roma is a "must-do" for anyone interested in learning about Rome from a Jewish perspective. Micaela is absolutely incredible - she's knowledgeable, articulate, witty, and full of energy, passion and charisma. She made our tour of the Jewish Ghetto fun, interesting, and memorable. I was traveling with four other family members, all from NY, and we all thoroughly enjoyed every minute of the tour. We learned a ton in a short period of time and had a lot of fun. I highly recommend this tour - really worthwhile!!
Kim Harounian in new york, NY USA 03/02/2011
Best: The Forum
Why: I would put it at the top of the list because I am interested in politics and history, and those are combined with literature, art, and architecture. But maybe that's just me!
Worst: Diocletian Baths
Why: The Michelangelo calendar was fascinating, but the rest is just a pretty church and the museum is beyond cheesy. Looks like the same types of stuff small towns in rural U.S. might offer.
Synda Sallee in Scottsdale, AZ USA 02/28/2011
Best: Arco Dei Tolomei, B&B,Trastevere, Rome
Why: This is a very cozy B&B tucked into the convenient, quaint, and historical Trastervere area of Rome. So many Roman sites, wonderful restaurants and shops are walkable from this B&B. Marco and his wonderful staff made our stay very comfortable and also helped us plan and make arrangements for our daily travels. The rooms are lovely and the big breakfasts very delicious. We will always be lonesome for Marco and his staff. Our stay here was so relaxing and wonderful!

Best: topbikerental&tours
Why: It now can be said that riding a bike in Rome is the only unique way to experience this City. The guides at Top Bike Rental & Tours are incredibly friendly Italians who are filled with local and historical knowledge. Top Bike Rental tours take you to main historical sites AND beautiful low key areas you would have otherwise never known existed. If you are in Rome for only a few days it is a great way to cover a large part of the city and see many sights. For adventurous and skilled bike riders take the Appian Way Tour. This was the highlight of my trip! Jane Wood
Jane in Wood, NY USA 01/30/2011
Worst: Filetti di Bacala
Why: Awful food, double the price for the English menu, and add a layer of grime and it was the worst restaurant in Rome. Rick, what are you thinking?
John Scott in Maitland, Fl USA 01/27/2011
Best: St. Peters Tomb
Why: It was an experience not everyone knows about. The thought of being in a burial area that old was an inspiration in itself.
Jim Bonatakis in Freehold, NJ USA 01/21/2011
Best: topbike rental & tours
Why: I am an independent traveller who spent a long romantic week-end in Rome in June this year. I am not an affiliate nor do have have any interests in this venture. I decided to book this tour after doing something similar in Bangkok which was loads of fun and this one didn't disappoint. According to our guide (a part-time Canadian English teacher living in Rome) Topbike rental is made of Roman bicycle enthusiasts. They operate from a small office come workshop a short walk away from the Carvour tube stop or a 15 minute walk from the Coliseum. The price includes bike, Helmet, guide (their bikes were great, with various style to choose from.) The tour in question was the "panoramic" Rome tour, which is different from it's competitors (as the others seem to be focussing on the centre which you can do on foot). This was an energetic tour which took our small group of 5 (3 clients + 1 guide and 1 trainee guide) up and down various hills and points of interests which I would have never heard of, let alone tried to go to and therefore, I would have kept my visit to the "Centro sturico" and near attractions. After three and half hours of non stops hooo! and haaa! admiring various vistas, stopping to take pictures and drinks water from antic fountains (it sound a lots harder that was it was) our guide proposed a well deserved stop in a small cafe to loads ourselves on freshly made pizza in the shade of the Pantheon. That done it was time to cycle the final twenty min. through the Jewish quarter and in front of the coliseum back to base. I highly recommend this tour, it was fun, romantic, informative: perfect! Best: Jewish Roma Tours - Guide Micaela Pavoncello
Why: A wonderful glimpse into the history and current day life of the Jewish Ghetto. Micaela Pavoncello is an amazing guide with a wealth of knowledge!
Jill in Clearwater, FL USA 12/20/2010
Best: Colliseum, Forum, all the major sights
Why: The history is amazing and even better when your standing in it. There can be crowds...but did you really expect to be there alone ? The National museum is really awesome too. The basement has a coin vault that is worth your time.
Worst: Beggars and guys selling junk
Why: These people are PROS !!!! Alot of gypsy women would sit in the doorway of ALL the churches. We even saw a new scam of people pretending to have deformed feet rolling around on skateboards. The guys selling junk, do I seriously need a plastic gun that blows bubbles ? Almost had to knock out a guy trying to push roses on us.
John in Denton, TX USA 12/12/2010
Best: Cristina Giannicchi - Tour guide
Why: Thank you for recommending Cristina in your guidebook. She is an amazing young woman and an outstanding tour guide. The day my family spent with her in the Vatican museums & St Peter's cathedral was the highlight of our fantastic trip to Italy (planned with lots of Rick Steve's guide book help!). Cristina managed to fully engage all of us from the art & history lover to the teenager who found most other museums and churches boring. Cristina is knowledgeable and fun - a winning combination!
K. Howard in Newtown, PA USA 12/11/2010
Best: Ostia Antica
Why: While Rome was fantastic in and of itself, this was a great break from the city, and so easy: 1E there and back, couldn't have been easier on the Metro and train.
Elvira in Jefferson, WI USA 11/24/2010
Best: Trastavere & Jewish Ghetto & San Clemente Church
Why: We probably would not have visited them had we not read about them in the guide book first. The maps were priceless. Our guide told us about the neighborhoods but we had already planned on visiting them because of the guidebook.
Worst: Lodging out of Center of City
Why: We stayed at the Courtyard by Marriott Central Park and there is no mention in the book about lodging out of the city and transportation options. Not a "worst" situation but would be nice to have a sense of location to city as this was not on map but only 3.7 miles from center.
Sheila Forchtner in San Clemente, CA USA 11/12/2010
Best: All where very good, but we liked Venice best.
Why: Quite after Rome, no scooters, no McDonalds , Just being Venice.
Worst: the directions to the catacombs in Rome.
Why: The bus listed was confusing, stops unclear and we got thourghly lost. Did find a nice park though where we could sit and people watch.
Tina Hvizdos in Porter, TX USA 11/12/2010
Best: marco, the owner and the location
Why: marco is a gracious host/concierge/general advisor who helps at every turn. Also, this small guest house exudes friendliness and attracts patrons who are relaxed, open to adventure, and friendly.
Worst: nothing
Why: We started a two week vacation in Italy which began in Rome and then included Bologna, Verona, and concluded with a week in Venice. Arco dei Tolomei and Marco remained supreme among wonderful accomodations and location
m white in Rye, New Hampshire, nH USA 11/09/2010
Best: Borghese Gallery
Why: The pace at which one could view the wonderful art. Thank God for your book, we never could have seen all we did in Rome without your help. Wish I had downloaded your MP3 tours.
Worst: Vatican Museum
Why: The crowds, noise of tour guides, tour groups blocking views...sensory overload!

Best: Rome Walks Tour of Roman Forum, Colosseum
Why: Archaeology professor led, only 8 in our group, very informative -well worth the price!
Martins in HOPEWELL, VA USA 11/03/2010
Best: 1)Day trip to Pompeii 2) Info on Roma Pass
Why: Gaetano Manfredi was great. He has a passion for his subject and brings Pompeii to life again. It was the high point of our trip (and we got the 10% discount by mentioning the book). Also, the Roma pass is a "must have." As advertised, it saves time, money, and long lines!
Charlie Sparks in Vienna, va USA 10/31/2010
Best: Trastevere
Why: We had a private guide take us through Trastevere. On the advice of our B&B we picked Trastevere over a tour of Christian Rome, it was the right pick. We saw a part of Rome we never would have seen without a guide - or a least not as enjoyed as much without someone pointing out the history.
Amber in Atlanta, GA USA 10/31/2010
Best: Roma Pass! Vatican Scavi tour and Priscilla catacombs
Why: Just the time it saved us in line at the Colosseum was worth it. The Vatican Scavi tour ended inside St. Peters so there was no line or security. The catacombs were more interesting than I expected.
Worst: 1) Spanish Steps, 2) the Forum
Why: A hang out. The police were watching from a discreet distance. With the fence all around I could've gotten my fill from just looking over the fence. It was very difficult to make out. The exit to Campidoglio was barricaded.
Merrill in Sacramento, CA USA 10/26/2010
Worst: Saint Peter's Square Taxi Stand.
Why: 3 times in 5 days, we were quoted outrageous 18 Euro prices for an 8 Euro ride. The dispatcher refused to help. We hailed a taxi on the street and paid a 8-9 Euro meter charge. Also, beware of taxis who do not reset their meter when you enter. We have exited 3 taxis who tried this trick. Shame on them. Be careful in Rome, and always check the meter. Ciao for now!
Peter in San Francisco, CA USA 10/26/2010
Best: Palazzo Barberini & Galeria Doria Pamphila
Why: Two most pleasant art viewing places, good signage
Worst: Borghese Gallery
Why: numerous paintings were wrapped up, but still on wall. signage impossible to use.
Gregory Frux in Brooklyn, NY USA 10/24/2010
Best: tour of Jewish ghetto with Jewish Roma
Why: Micaela was the most enthusiastic and animated guide we have ever had. Her knowledge of the current Jewish community of Rome is complemented by her knowledge of the history of her community. And she knows all the interesting facts and stories which make this history come alive.
Tina in Zegas, NJ USA 10/11/2010
Worst: Crypta Balbi - part of National Museum of Rome
Why: Worst. Museum. Experience. Ever. No interpretations or explanations, just mortar and bricks. You don't feature it, but you should strongly steer people away.

Why: It was exactly as the book described. The hotel was spotlessly clean, friendly, the people spoke english and were very helpful. Breakfast was wonderful and the location was perfect beyond words. I would definately stay there again and recommend it highly.

Best: Rick Steves audio tour of the Pantheon
Why: I had downloaded this audio tour onto a small mp3 player before we left and my husband and I both listened to this charming and very informative description and explanation of the Pantheon. When my (somewhat hard to please) husband said how perfect it was, I got the chills.

Best: Colosseum & Roman Forum tour with Cristina Giannicchi
Why: Cristina was an excellent guide. Her overlay presentation of the Colosseum and the Roman Forum brought to life the ancient ruins for us, especially our children. We have a better understanding of ancient Rome because of her. She is also very charming and quite humorous, which is great when one is travelling with children. We highly recommend her for anyone visiting Rome!

Worst: Taxi from Termini to hotel near Trevi Fountain
Why: Despite traveling to Rome 10-15 times in the past I let the the driver create confusion at the drop off and as a result I overpaid 15-20 euros for the trip. I was in the front seat with 3 youg audults in the back and I didn't notice the meter wasn't reset. He dropped us off 2 blocks from the hotel in the middle of a crowd and said he couldn't take us all the way to the hotel which I subsequently discovered was a lie. I argued with him for 2-3 minutes and got him to back off a bit but I still was taken advantage off. I was too trusting and even though I should have known to get his taxi number I didn't.

Best: Pompeii Self-Guilded Walking Tour
Why: Very easy to follow and informative. I didn't want to hire a guide, and don't recommend hiring one unless specifically recommended to you. Entrance Fee includes a map and you'll want to be able to go at your own pace. Got lost between The House of Vetti and the Bakery/Mill though!
Debra in New York, NY USA 08/15/2010
Worst: Timing Estimates of How Long to Get to Places
Why: We used Rick's estimate on how long it would take to walk from the Spanish Steps to the Borghese Gallery. He estimated 15 minutes and by our timing,it was much closer to 30 minutes. That extra 15 minutes is a big deal when the temps are in the low 90s! There where other timing estimates that we found to be overly optimistic.

Best: Jewish Walking Tour in Rome
Why: Micaela Pavoncello is knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and a delight. One of the most interesting and enjoyable tours we have ever taken. Highly recommended.
Burt and Marion Fainman in Chicago, IL USA 08/10/2010
Best: Vatican
Why: We used Roman Oddessy for a tour guide and it was fantastic. The guide went an hour over, was very knowledgeable, and fun. The museum can be overwelming, but he limited our exposure/time. We spent lots of time in the Sistine Chapel with again, excellent explanations. St. Peters was also excellent.
Worst: Collosseum/Forum
Why: We thought the 12 euro price for entry was rather high for a facility/location that required mimimum upkeep
Robert Boehm in Greenbank, WA USA 08/08/2010
Best: Jewish Roma Tour with Micaela Pavoncello
Why: Micaela is not only highly skilled and informative, she is also charming and humorous. The history of Rome's Jewish community is rich and distinct from other European Jewish communities and it is well worth it to learn about it from Micaela. Our family of 5 (kids ages 14, 11 and 8) all loved this tour and felt she was the best tour guide of our 3-week European trip.
L Goldstein in Chicago, IL USA 07/21/2010
Best: All!
Why: I did as much of the guidebook as possible and I NEVER once was disappointed. I learned more from Rick than anything else! It was wonderful and instead of traveling with a group, I could walk around at my own pace without someone yelling at me to keep up. I loved all.

Worst: Dinner at Da Baffetto Pizzeria in Rome
Why: First trip to eat lunch there was excellent! Second stop on Sunday evening May 30, 2010 while waiting in line to get a seat we witnessed the owner (we met on our first stop) physically attack an young Asian-American woman who did nothing other than walk toward him when he called the next in line to be seated. As it turned out she was by herself and didn't not understand his gruff Italian, he was calling the couple behind her. The owner grabbed her by the hair and shook her head cursing her in Italian and pushed her away. It happened so fast no one could believe it. About 15 of the 30 people in line left refusing to eat there. We left as well. NEVER RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. IT WAS SCARY! Gene DuAime
Gene DuAime in Reading, PA USA 06/01/2010
Worst: Hotel/hostel Fawlty Towers in Rome
Why: One night stay on April 26, 2010. Avoid at all costs, disgusting accommodation, dingy, dirty rooms, bed bugs, expensive at 75 euros. Marco Polo in the same buildings has nice remodeled rooms for 80 euros. Every one of the 4 budget hotels in the same building would be better than Fawlty Towers. We should have read the reviews on Tripadviser instead of trusting Rick Steves recommendation. Avoid at all costs.
Isabela in Vancouver, WA USA 05/25/2010
Best: Borghese Museum, San Clemente Church, Caravaggio Churches, Capitoline Museum, etc. etc. etc
Why: Rome is splendid
Worst: Vatican Museum
Why: Way too many people, despite fact we had a private tour. Corridors are a crush and it is hard to enjoy the art. The Vatican should limit the visitors. Crush of people is even a danger in the narrow corridors.
Judy Pittenger in Baltimore, MD USA 05/22/2010
Best: Daytrip to Capri Seeing Pasteum
Why: There's much more to Capri than I had imagined. A bit touristy in some areas but beautiful. If it's a clear day, a ride on the chairlift to Monte Solaro is as much fun as the Blue Grotto experience and not as costly.
Worst: Frustrations
Why: In Pompeii, the House of Vetti remains closed in early May 2010. In Naples, the Archeological Museum is a must visit, particularly after visiting Pompeii, but the mosaics, the "secret room" and the Egyptian collection were all closed. No price reduction. A lack of signage made it difficult for us to sort out that the National Museum of Rome is set apart and across a busy street from the Palazzo Massimo & Baths of Diocletian complex. A surprising number of people seemed to have no knowledge of the whereabouts of the Museum.
Gordon in Oakland, CA USA 05/16/2010
Best: Our Night Walk
Why: We used your guide except we started at Olympic Stadium. AS Roma was playing that night so we started up there to people-watch. When the grounds got really crowded we then walked to Piazza del Popolo from which we traced the night walk down to Campo de Fiori. That was our first night and we fell in love with the city.

Best: Roman Odyssey walking tour company
Why: Rahul (lived in Toronto) and Jason (from California) made us feel the history of Rome from both a religious and artistic view come alive! Both men are extremely knowledgeable. Emily the office manager was extremely helpful in helping us set up the tours for 20 people through many email contacts. She was very patient with me and my tons of questions. She is from Louisiana.
Rick Hanson in Lake Park, MN USA 04/29/2010
Best: Sta. Maria Maggiore
Why: I am not a Christian, but found this cathedral to be a more impressive experience than St. Peter's. It is nearly as gorgeous, and is much less crowded and tourist filled. We were fortunate enough to visit when there was a Mass with a choir, which was just beautiful. The building is an historical, architectural and religious gem. It can easily be combined with a visit to St. Peter in Chains, about 15 minutes walk.
Worst: Piazza Navona
Why: Just a tourist trap. We felt like we were in Disneyland. Maybe when there are no tourists the place would be nice, but otherwise forget it. The restaurants are all overpriced and mediocre, at best.

Best: Villa d' Este, Tivoli
Why: The fountains and gardens are definitely the main attraction which is why the tour of the interior of the Villa d'Este is such a great and glorious surprise. The frescoes, mosaics, and plaster bas-relief are such an incredible delight.
Worst: The Spanish Steps
Why: The crowds, peddlers, and beggars took away from any charm the Spanish Steps may have.
Jane Coghlan in Vilonia, AR USA 03/25/2010
Best: Villa Borghese
Why: Baroque splendor at its most hedonistic and the most glorious Bernini sculptures, in one of the few park settings in Rome. On the way to the Villa Borghese, be sure to slip into Santa Maria del Popolo to see the two magnificent Caravaggio paintings (for free!).
Worst: restaurants near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona
Why: Rick, you nailed this one. We were charged six euros for stale bread and "servizio" our first night in Rome. After that debacle, we sought out the neighborhood cafes where the locals eat and the supermercados in the area. It was a bit insulting to see sidewalk boards that even touted cafes' "Touristico Menus" at inflated prices. These restaurants know they're shooting fish in a barrel with naive Americans.

Best: Priscilla Catacombs
Why: Easy to get to. And the fresco's on the wall were amazing. Just being there with the first known paintings of the 3 wise men and mary and jesus was awe-inspiring. One of the best moments of my week-long trip to rome.
Worst: Trastervere Walk
Why: Boring and a waste of time. With so many other walks and things to see this was by far the worst. We ended it and walked up Giancolo(sp?) Hill and took it straight to The vatican. I felt like of all the amazing things in the guidebook this was by far the most useless.

Best: Palatine Hill
Why: I felt most relaxed and most connected to the real people of ancient Rome there. It didn't have the "theme park" feel of some of the other tourist-mobbed attractions.
Worst: Vatican Museum
Why: I was expecting something more like the Louvre, spacious and graceful and full of wonders. I booked an official tour in advance to avoid lines. But the guided tour made me feel a little like a kindergartner, and the crowds were so dense that it was a relief when it was over and we could breathe again.

Worst: Hotel Sonya, Rome
Why: When we arrived we were shuffled down the street to their "annex" where they gave us a very funky three level room consisting of a loft with 3 beds, a main floor space with a large bed, and a very spacious basement bathroom. Unfortunately upon taking a shower it was apparent that the plumbing was an issue and most likely not easily fixed. After waiting several hours to remedy the situation we took it upon ourselves to find new accomodations elsewhere but it took us awhile to convince the management to return our money. They were less than helpful and did not suggest any other place for us to go at 9pm in the evening. I would not recommend this place to anyone.

Why: We didn't make reservations - actually on purpose - because we don't like being tied to a schedule. Rick said the shortest lines would be just after noon. We showed up at 12:30 and literally walked right in. Maybe it was just dumb luck but we seemed to have a lot of that on our two week trip.

Why: The Borghese is one of the best sights I've seen. Having that kind of access to those unbeliveable Bernini statues is an experience that cant be topped. The Forum Walk puts a meaning behind the stones and rubble that you see. It is great for anyone. I love Santa Maria Maggiore and Santa Prassade. Both gems! I've done the Night Walk 4 times. Its a great way to familiarize yourself with the heart of the city and watch the real Roman nightlife happen. I think it is a must-do!

Why: Our experience with your company was wonderful! When we arrived at the airport our driver/tour guide, Giorgio, was waiting for us. After taking us to the hotel to check in, we began our tour. Giorgio had an excellent command of the English language. He was also well versed in the history of Rome and enjoyed sharing this information with us. After our long flight from the United States, this was the perfect way for us to see the highlights of Rome before beginning our cruise the following day. Our driver that day was GianCarlo. He arrived promptly at the hotel and took us to our ship. Both men were very courteous and helpful. Congratulations on a well organized operation with a very competent staff. I would recommend your company to anyone without reservation. Thank you for helping us make the most of our brief stay in Rome.

Best: the Vatican
Why: Your commentary on the Vatican Museum, the Sistine Chapel, and St. Peter's Basilica made these overwhelming sights manageable and enjoyable.
Worst: the Holy Steps and San Giovanni Lanterno
Why: These sights were phenomenal, but not nearly enough about them -- and their significance -- in your book.
Laralyn Sasaki in Columbus, OH USA 10/09/2009
Best: Vatican Museum
Why: Just my personal preference -- I was blown away by the Vatican Museum and really appreciated your explanations of the various rooms, the Sistine Chapel, etc. There were four of us (two couples), and we each had different favorite experiences in Rome. But if pressed, I would have to say mine was the Vatican Museum. We were able to purchase tickets before we went, and as a result we waltzed in ahead of the crowds at 8:30am and were allowed into the museum before it officially opened. Fantastic!
Worst: Galleria Borghese
Why: Well, "worst" is overstating it. We actually enjoyed Galleria Borghese, but were probably too dead on our feet to give it the attention it deserves. I wish their gift shop had offered a small book of photos of the rooms of this beautiful villa, especially since they don't allow photography. I'm glad we went, but it was a bit distant from everything else -- not your fault!

Best: National Museum of Rome, Vatican tour & 'Sunday in the city'
Why: National Museum of Rom (see favorite discoveries above). We hadn't planned to see it this trip, but it was a trip to celebrate our nephew's college graduation, and he picked this museum. Walked in with no wait or reservation and almost felt like we had the place to ourselves on a Friday afternoon. Vatican tour is absolutely best done with a guide. What a thoroughly daunting, unspeakably magnificent place. The guide we'd hired actually (Sarah May) was sick that day but still made the effort to take the train into town to meet us and ask if we'd mind joining another small group led by a guide she knew well, and it was fine. We could never have gotten through that place without a guide - too many fascinating distractions! The wireless headsets the guide used were a godsend. We were a bit dismayed at the crowds, which can be exhausting, and rude tourists (who ignored requests for silence and no pictures in the Sistine Chapel), but these didn't detract from the magnificence of it all. On a future trip, we'd like to go to the top of St. Peter's dome and perhaps explore the crypts as well. Afterward we ate at a lovely little trattoria that struck our fancy, to the occasional interruption of sirens, motorcades & hovering helicopters. Perhaps Berlusconi dropped in for the day! We walked out of the trattoria into the midst of a fairly sizeable street demonstration - lots of people on bicycles carring banners, drums, horns. Something about Pakistan and immigration, from what we could discern. All very loud and energetic but peaceful! Police had closed the street for that, too.
We also really enjoyed 'walking Rome' all day Sunday. The main street was closed for a big cycling event, so we got to see some of the local cycling fervor, while enjoying window shopping at the various trendy clothing stores (ALL the retail stores were open, to our surprise).

Worst: the book is written sloppily
Why: It appears as if the researcher (Rick?) is rushing through Rome, grabbing info from signs, copying info from the audio guides he has rented (his descriptions of items in the Borghese are word for word off their audio guide) - it's hit and miss.

Best: Roma Pass, Shortcut from Sistine to St Peters
Why: The Roma pass is a great deal, worth its price to blow past lines at the Forum & Colosseum. The 3 day transport pass saves steps--learn & use the buses. Short cut to St Peters from Sistine Chapel works well. Security only seems interested in stopping those trying to get to the chapel from St Peters without paying the museum fee.

Best: Borghese Gallery
Why: Incredible sculpture. Nice grounds. We were really glad we took advantage of the English speaking tour, which needs to be booked separately. The grounds were nice as well We also enjoyed the Palatine Hill-peaceful and great view.
Worst: Vatican Museum
Why: We did enjoy the Sistine Chapel. Even though we were there at the end of March, it was incredibly crowded. We waited for over an hour to get in. I wish I had had enough time to see St Peter's on a different day. I can't believe the Catholic Church is having money problems...the cash they took in just on the day we were there was huge!

Best: Roma Pass
Why: FANTASTIC DEAL! because of your book we used it to our advantage including using it for The National Musuem of Rome and The Colisium, Palantine hill with NO WAITING. The Colisium was a bit confusing with the two lines.. so to anyone reading this that buys the Roma Pass STAY TO THE LEFT and zip right in!!! We also rode the metro over and over for three days so we basically did all that for free.
Worst: Dark Rome Tours
Why: I do not remember where we found this tour group but I want to warn everyone that they SUCK. We bought it for The Vatican and yes it was nice to jump the line (even though it was not that long) but the guide was sooo bad we left the tour after 45 minutes. I wrote a letter to the company and basically got a defensive, horribly rude letter from the *Customer service manager* that basically told me to bad, so sad no refund for you.

Best: The Restaurants!
Why: There are so many restaurants that it can be overwhelming deciding where to go. Italy has some of the BEST food anywhere in the world, but we followed Rick's suggestions all throughout our trip and we were NEVER disappointed! Places that you would normally not find on your own. Food and ambiance was fantastic everywhere Rick recommended!

Best: The night walk
Why: We enjoyed all the sites, but the night walk of Rome was magical. This was not our first visit to Rome, but it was the first time we were able to fit in the Catacombs- very enjoyable.
Worst: The metro during rush hour
Why: It was soooo stuffed with people. Plan your arrival and departure around rush hour (like we did) We quickly learned that we would need to take a very early train out of town or wait until later. There is no way we could have squeezed on with luggage-even a Rick Steves pack. My husband was so jammed in he literally would fall out when the doors opened at each stop. One time I thought he would not make it back on. I just pulled on him with all my strength (probably squishing someone behind me).
