Best: Ashcroft Guest House, Haltwhistle, England
Why: It has been a dream of mine to visit Hadrian’s Wall and finally after numerous trips to the UK, I had it in my itinerary for this year’s trip. I had researched numerous places to stay in the area and decided to stay at the Ashcroft Guest House in Haltwhistle. All my emails were answered promptly and they gave me a special rate as I was traveling alone. Upon my arrival in Haltwhistle, it was an easy 10 min walk from the train station through the cute little town and was greeted warmly. My room was huge, with a lovely bed, great view of their garden and a big flat screen TV. The Canadian in me thought the washroom was small however I have been to the UK 10+ times and remember the days when there were no en-suite washrooms so no complaints about the washroom. Christine and Geoff James are amazing host, with a wealth of knowledge of the area and when you are travelling alone it was nice to have someone like this to talk to. Lastly, the breakfast was incredible; made to order, plentiful, varied, and it kept me going the whole day. I hope to go back another time to Hadrian’s Wall and will be contacting Christine and Geoff to stay at their lovely property when I do.

Paul McClure in Brampton, ON Canada 07/22/2008

Worst: Thistle Barbican
Why: It was a lovely-looking hotel in a great location. The problem was with a 2 month advance reservation and a written confirmation of guaranteed for late arrival - we arrived to discover they had given our room away and had to find other accommodations in the middle of the night after a 4000 mile trip. Management was completely irresponsible and incompetent.

Best: All
Why: Each B&B, including the Falcon Hotel which is a B&B because it includes the Full English Breakfast, had its own unique personality which was a good experience. The Sollars Barn was our serendipity find because we did not have a reservation for the night. We found it on A4112 at 5:30 pm. A GREAT barn conversion, great manicured garden area and great hostess, Jean Anthony.

Best: Gorphwysfa Guest House, Ruthin, Wales
Why: REALLY comfortable beds and outstanding service from our hostess, Margaret O'Raian

Kim Martin in Dallas, TX USA 07/07/2008

Best: Holly Villa Guest House, Bath
Why: Great hosts who offered advice on driving and services in dealing with rental car; beautiful room and garden; great breakfast; good price. A very close runner-up: Preistville Guest House, Edinburgh.

Worst: Queen Anne Guest Lodge, York
Why: Undergoing change of ownership; bathroom was not cleaned adequately (mold in shower and in carpet)

Elizabeth in Minneapolis, MN USA 05/19/2008

Worst: The Pink Guest House, Portree, Isle of Skye
Why: Our bathroom was not very clean and the towels were thin and shabby. The family room that we stayed in was on the ground floor right on the busy street that runs right next to the busy harbor area. People walking on the street could look right in. Would not recommend at all.

Janet Udouj in Little Rock, AR USA 05/16/2008

Best: Priestville Guest House, Edinburgh
Why: Colin is an amazing host and does everything in his power to make sure you have a great experience. As a result, the place fills up quickly, so book well in advance.

Barb Cohen in Saginaw, MI USA 05/15/2008

Best: Woodville House in Bath
Why: Anne Toalster is getting on in age and her husband passed away, but she is a kick and is very talkative. She wants to be involved in each vistors life. The rooms are nothing fantastic, but it is a comfortable place and a very nice lady to be your mother away from home.

Worst: Edinburgh Central Travelodge
Why: Dirty rooms, lack of help at front desk, although their location is great.

Steve Onustack in Lynnwood, WA USA 05/06/2008

Best: Ross & Kathleen Birnie's B&B, Edinburgh
Why: Everything in this meticulous and comfy B&B was perfect! It was both charming & loaded with comforts and conveniences. Their current place is Aonach Mor, but they are opening at 23 Mayfield Gardens in July.

Best: Dunedin Guest House
Why: We traveled with our two children (age 9 & 12). The family room was perfect for us. The Wrights were warm and friendly - my children had us go back and take a photo with the Wrights! The Scottish breakfast was wonderful!

Lisa Lysack in Liverpool, NY USA 10/17/2007

Best: The Ashcroft Guest House in Haltwhistle
Why: This was an amazing room. I think most people make a day trip out of Hadrian's wall/Vindolanda, otherwise this place would have dozens of glowing reviews on this site. The room was absolutely huge compared to everything else we'd stayed in on this trip. They gave us the family suite for the same price as the double since it was just 2 of us - claw foot tub, fluffy robes, wifi, patio, four-poster, giant flat-screen tv, 80 pounds/night. They also have a beautiful garden and the breakfast is fresh and made to order. The Hadrian's wall bus stops two blocks away.

Worst: Blue Cedar House, Moreton-in-Marsh
Why: The innkeepers are very friendly, but the room was very worn and tired. I think if you lived with a retiree who collects plates, this might feel like home.

Joanne in Fong, CA USA 10/04/2007

Best: Gwynfryn B & B
Why: Colin and Monica run a wonderful B & B. The room we had (the "Le Bleu" room) was very clean, with a large bathroom and very well decorated with a California coastline resort feel.

They set a new standard for service when they helped us find a convenient spot to park our car AND permitted their guests to use their computer for internet access (They were only B & B that we found that permitted this during our 3 weeks and 2 day visit to Great Britain. In fact, we enjoyed our stay so much we extended it from the original two days to three days!)

They were cheery, delightful, and helpful hosts, assisting us with any questions we had about the area and providing us with numerous travel and destination suggestions.

Gwynfryn was the best B & B we stayed at during our entire trip and we would gladly visit again if we were traveling anywhere nearby!

Thank Colin and Monica for a wonderful stay.

Dennis Ozman in Overland Park, KS USA 09/29/2007

Best: Airdenair Guest House, Edinburgh
Why: Neighborhood was great. Room was spotless, breakfast was wonderful. Jill was away when we visited but her daughter was wonderful and even gave us homemade scones, butter and jam to take on our early morning flight with us.

Worst: Elizabeth House, London
Why: This was a nightmare, had stayed at the Lime Tree B & B the previous year and that was a pleasure. One outlet, small sink, dirty and raggity curtains and the blankets could have been used for massive DNA testing. You need to rethink this one.

Kathleen Pezzo in Marlboro, NY USA 09/23/2007

Best: Dunsford Guest House
Why: The breakfast was the best of our trip and Richard and Linda took an interest in us and were a wealth of information about things to do/

Alan Leiserson in Nashville, TN USA 09/13/2007

Best: Barbican Guest House, York, England
Why: Rick, you really need to add this place to your list for York. Prices were reasonable, just outside the wall south side, easy walking distance to Castle area and Minster. If Rick's places are full, consider this one. It was absolutely the prettiest B&B we've ever stayed in. The breakfast room richly decorated in red with lovely china and even porcelain figurines. The bedroom with art prints and a bottle of sherry. Even the stairways lovingly decorated. Ann and Adrian the hosts were very friendly and helpful. Oh, yes, try Toto's Italian Restaurant two block away.

Keith Wood in Lawrence, KS USA 08/31/2007

Best: Airdenair Guest House
Why: Not the typical B&B where the owners talk you up and show you around the house. Jill pretty much leaves you alone, friendly but not gushing. Liked the baked pastries left in the common hallway for a good snack. No living room though to play games.

Aimee in Oakland, CA USA 08/26/2007

Best: Crown Hotel Guest House Inverness
Why: Gordans friendly welcome started our stay in Inverness in the best possible way. He offered suggestions and told stories. Great stay.

Sandy Marble in Reno, Nv USA 08/20/2007

Best: Aster House, London
Why: Great location in a quiet neighborhood, a relief after being in London's busy center. Comfortable room, although the bathroom was very small. Owners Leoni & Simon Tan were welcoming, enthusiastic and wonderful hosts and provided internet, cellphones, info about the neighborhood. The breakfast room was lovely and lots of newspapers. We would definitely stay there again.

Worst: The Hazelwood, York
Why: Clean, comfortable room, nicely appointed but not much personality overall. We never saw the owners and breakfasts were boring, very basic. We got a call from our daughter in London while we were out and they had no phone we could use to call her back and did not offer the use of their house phone. This was two days after the Glasgow bombing and failed car bombings in London.

Kathie Roon in Marysville, WA USA 08/06/2007

Best: Dragon House B&B, Chipping Campden
Why: The hosts were wonderful and the room was beautiful. Tremendous value for the price. The book describes a garden in the back yard, but garden hardly describes it. We enjoyed a gorgeous, relaxing retreat. The room was spotless and had a beautiful bathroom. Highly recommended!

Worst: Airden House, York
Why: Nice looking place, but not really a b&b atmosphere. I never met the owner on a three day, two night stay. Very cold atmosphere, with a tricky check in procedure that was quite a hassle. Much too expensive for the room. I would have had a similar experience in a large chain hotel.

Amy in Geneva, IL USA 07/27/2007

Best: Treetops Guest House
Why: Beautiful gardens, wonderful hostess! Great price.

Worst: York Youth Hotel
Why: Lots of family. Noise in upstair rooms was horrible!! I could hear the water running in the pipes behind my wall.

Pam in McPherson, KS USA 07/25/2007

Best: Garden Court Hotel, London
Why: Friendly, and fairly quiet

Joe Myers in SYLVANIA, OH USA 07/10/2007

Best: Prior House B&B, Bath
Why: Lynn Shearn delightful host! Easy access from M-4 and convenient parking.

Worst: Collin House Hotel, London
Why: Had stayed at the Collin House in 2005 and made arrangements again for this trip. They no longer are a B&B, but offer a 10% reduction on all purchases at 2 nearby cafes. The old lobby is now an office with luggage storage racks. They are part of a corportation that owns the Rosedene Hotel, Ebury House, Eaton House along with the Collin House, all on Ebury Street.

WILLIAM WOODBURN in Estes Park, Co USA 07/07/2007

Best: Priestville Guest House
Why: Trina and Colin were really friendly and just great hosts. They were the ones who recommended us to Hanedan's in Edinburgh and it was one of our best and cheapest meals in the UK!

Sharon in Pasadena , CA USA 07/01/2007

Best: Aonach Mor Guest House-Edinburgh
Why: Ross and his staff were extremely friendly and helpful. Great location and room. Fine room for 4 people. Great breakfast! Will be staying there again!!

Paul Dixon in Richmond Hill, GA USA 06/18/2007

Best: Turret Guesthouse, Edinburgh
Why: Lovely place, exceptional food, and charming hosts.

SUE MURRIAN in KNOXVILLE, TN USA 06/14/2007

Best: Dunedin Guest House
Why: The owners, the Wrights, are so welcoming and accommodating. They are truly knowledgeable about Edinburgh's events and activities. The guest house is immaculate and the included English Breakfast is amazing in its variety and its portions. It was a delight to stay with them.

Jennifer Trueit in Lakewood, WA USA 06/14/2007

Best: Crown Hotel Guesthouse, Ardconnel Street, Inverness and the Robin Hood Hotel, Blackpool
Why: Gordon, our host in Inverness, was chatty and helpful.

When we arrived at the Robin Hood Hotel in Blackpool, we saw a "No Vacancy" sign. I rang the bell, thinking they could recommend somewhere to stay. Fortunatel, I had my Rick Steves Great Britain 2007 under my arm. The host said, "Are you a Rick Stever? I'll fit you in!"

Worst: Elizabeth House, Warwick Way, London
Why: When we arrived, they did not have our reservation. Fortunately, I had their confirmation email with me, and they found us a room. The accommodation was tiny, with a miniscule sink, which trickled water. No hair gryer, no TV in the room, and right down the street from a parking garage, which meant it was noisy all night. There was an aura of seediness about the place, but it was 60 pounds/night and within walking distance of Victoria Station. I would have preferred the Elizabeth House in Eccleston Square, where I've stayed before, but they were booked.

Leslie Talley in Titusville, FL USA 06/09/2007

Best: Brodie's 2 Backpaker Hostel
Why: The info given was spot on. A great location and easy to book!

India in manchester, UK 06/06/2007

Best: Liked them all
Why: Town House B&B in Conwy had the best breakfast of any. The double room was much nicer than the ensuite, with a better view. They tend to split rooms up too much when they convert them to ensuites and make them smaller.

jenny in San Francisco, Ca USA 05/30/2007

Best: Queen Annes Guest House in York
Why: All the accomodations we used from the book were very good, but I would like to mention this one because the rooms were charming and clean, and the hosts were pleasant, efficient and unobtrusive. I liked that because I don't like a lot of conversation at breakfasttime.

jenny in San Francisco, Ca USA 05/30/2007

Best: St. Raphael - York
Why: The St. Raphael in York is a small B&B which has been completely redone in the last two years. Everything is clean, clean, clean! Very good breakfast and within a couple of blocks of the city center. Use Rick's shortcut from the train station and you can beat a taxi to the B&B. Highly recommended.

Jim Punches in Aptos, CA USA 05/24/2007

Best: Three Abbey Green - Bath
Why: Stayed at the Three Abbey Green (Old Plane Tree Room) in Bath for two nights as part of a three week England trip. This was the biggest room on our entire trip in a wonderfull B&B. Great location right next to the Abbey and Roman Spa. Would recommend at least three nights and two full days in Bath. Great break after London.

Jim Punches in Aptos, CA USA 05/24/2007

Best: Hotel Ceilidh-Donia, Edinburgh, Scotland
Why: Lovely, quiet neighborhood; pleasant, helpful hosts; comfortable room with a very nice bathroom (fantastic shower!), fabulous food in the restaurant; free Internet access; convenient to public transportation.

Judy Cascales in Chula Vista, CA USA 05/21/2007

Best: Gwynfryn B&B in Conwy, Wales
Why: Service above and beyond what a reasonable person would expect. Monica and Colin are wonderful and the place is beautiful.

Mary Clark in Silverthorne, CO USA 05/17/2007

Best: Liked them all....Priestville Guest House in Edinburgh, Parade Park in Bath, and Westland in London.
Why: Colin and his wife were wonderful at the Priestville in Edinburgh. Gave many tips on "saving a few pounds," and were delightful, and friendly. We were sad to have to leave. Parade Park in Bath had nice accommodations; however, we were up the stairs from the bar and had to tolerate a certain amount of cigarette smoke that drifted upstairs. Westland had nice accommodations, but I WAS DISAPPOINTED WHEN TOLD I COULD NOT GET MY 10% RICK STEVES DISCOUNT BECAUSE I HAD THE 2006 Book. (I planned our trip last fall. The 2007 book was not out yet. The folks at Westland would not budge, even though the 2006 and 2007 books BOTH offered 10% discounts. Was told I should go down the street and purchase a 2007 edition if I wanted the discount.)

Susan Saric in Orland Park, IL USA 05/16/2007

Best: Dunedin Gues House, Edinburgh
Why: Clean, quiet, friendly, helped with questions and the breakfast room is perfectly arranged with white tablecloths, etc.

Mary in Orlando, FL USA 05/14/2007

Best: Gorphwysfa Guest House, Ruthin, North Wales
Why: Exceptional extras at no cost, i.e. we did Indian takeout for dinner & she offered and set us a lovely table with china by the fireplace to eat it. Greeted us with tea by the fire.

Ann Grant in Santa Cruz, CA USA 04/13/2007

Best: Airdenair Guest House in Edinburgh
Why: Cheery atmosphere and comfortable quarters. Breakfasts were very good, and Jill provided a hearty snack for us when we left early in the morning for a highlands tour. Very convenient to the bus and a short trip to the city center.

M.Heffron in Exeter, NH USA 04/11/2007

Best: Loved Priestville Guest House
Why: Great Price and loved the location. And you can't ignore Colins great breakfast that he makes for you each day. Colin and his family made us feel at home and really wanted to share that Scotland hospitality.

Roderick Blake in Galveston, Tx USA 04/08/2007

Best: Woodville House
Why: Anne Toalster - a lovely, generous woman. She was amazing and great.

Jemma in Seattle, WA USA 04/02/2007

Best: Priestville Guest House
Why: Colin Warwick at Priestville Guest House in Edinburgh was a fantastic host and fed my husband kippers and black pudding until he couldn't move. (He also gave me so many pots of tea that I floated after breakfast.

Heidi Schwartz in Ocean, NJ USA 03/04/2007

Best: B&Bs in the UK for families
Why: Our family (two parents/three teens) stayed comfortably at Six Mary's Place (Edinburgh), Castle Guest House (Dover), Ensley House (Stratford-Upon-Avon) and Lawn Guest House (Gatwick). All were well priced for their area and were safe, clean, and very friendly. Each has a ensuite family room that sleeps 5, served an exceptional Full English breakfast and had restaurants within walking distance.

Beth in Huntsville, AL USA 03/01/2007

Best: Highfield Farm B&B - Shipston On Stour
Why: During a UK trip in Aug 2006, we spent 2 nights at the Highfield Farm B&B; Honington, Shipston on Stour. The owners have added on to their lovely farm home to provide two en-suite bedrooms and one bedroom with adjoining bathroom off the hall. There is also a sitting room with a dining area that guests can use. The rooms were modern and spacious and the bathrooms were more modern than in many hotels in the US. The full English breakfast was almost more than we could eat and delicious. A car is a must, but the location was very central - a short drive to Stratford Upon Avon, Warwick, Chipping Campden and other nearby towns in the Cotswolds. We found this wonderful B&B in a Great Britian guide to B&B's.

Fred B. in Vancouver, WA USA 02/06/2007

Best: Ardconnel House - Inverness
Why: We were two couples traveling for over two weeks in Scotland and Ireland and truly had nothing but very nice experiences visiting many of Rick's recommended sites and accommodations.

However, every one of us wished at the end of our three night stay at Ardconnel House (and at the end of our entire trip) that we had built more time into our schedule to spend in the Inverness area in general, and at the Ardconnel House with John and Elizabeth in particular.

The rooms are beautiful, including a fabulous guest parlor, but John and Elizabeth really made it special. What really struck me was their ability to be invisible on the one hand if you needed or wanted some private time, but yet available at all times (John usually from his closet-sized office behind the stairs)to answer any question, to provide any kind of service, advice, or just friendly conversation.

Elizabeth's breakfasts were fabulous and this leads me to just a couple of examples of their service. My brother-in-law and I had an early golf tee time, before scheduled breakfast hours, but John & Elizabeth both insisted that we have breakfast, which they prepared early just for us.

As it turned out, our golf was rained out and had to be rescheduled for the next day even earlier. Despite our protests, Elizabeth insisted on packing a picnic for us. Upon departure there were tears and hugs and new friendships made.

There are so many things to do as day trips or half-day trips around Inverness, I would heartily recommend a visit and by all means stay at Ardconnel House, www.ardconnel-inverness.co.uk.

Only one important tip, do please call ahead to get proper directions, as it is a little tricky to find the first time because some streets on the map are actually a pedestrian mall.

Ron & Kerry Petty in Bakersfield, CA USA 12/09/2006

Best: Priestville Guest House
Why: Generous, clean rooms. The owners gave us some inside tips on where to find sights related to Harry Potter.

Emily in Athens, GA USA 12/01/2006

Best: Parkside Guest House, Bath
Why: We stayed 3 nights and felt welcome and attended to. My husband commented that from the moment we walked through the front door, and into the foyer, he knew this B&B was a fine place. Everything was spotless and organized. Mrs. Lynall seemed to enjoy talking with each guest, as if they were a friend, not just a customer. On the first night we were they only guests, and were given a lovely room. Neither we nor Mrs. L could adjust the volume control on the TV, so she moved us to a second room. The very next day she had a serviceperson come to look at the TV problem and purchased two new universal remotes. She is interested in fixing each problem as she learns about it. Know that Rick's books and opinions have a lot of power! Mrs. L. commented that one year her B&B was unfortunately confused with another establishment. She said she noticed a decrease in room rentals to the tune of 5,000 British pounds that year ($10,000 US). This B&B is just 3 doors from Royal Victoria Park, hence the name...location, location, location.

Sharron STEVENS in Oberstaufenbach, Germany 11/28/2006

Worst: Skylane Hotel, Horley, Surrey (near Gatwick)
Why: I booked my room several months in advance for £56.50 believing it included a full English breakfast. (I can't confirm that it was included in the price which is my mistake.) The service personnel at the front desk were not helpful when I checked in. When I went down for breakfast there was no cook. Then I was told that I had to pay £8.50 for breakfast, which arrived as I was supposed to be boarding the shuttle bus to Gatwick. As we pulled out from the parking lot I saw the reader board listed £55 a night including breakfast. It was my worst hotel experience ever in Britain. With many neighboring hotels in the area there must be better choices.

Terry in Renton, WA USA 11/24/2006

Best: White Hart Inn Bath
Why: Very inexpensive for Bath, and this was the only place I could find that would let me stay for only one night. Every other place in the book wanted a two night minimum. It was a little noisy until the restaurant closed. It was clean and the staff was very helpful. It is close to the train station. There is a self-serve breakfast in the kitchen--toast and cereal and milk.

Julie in Provo, Ut USA 11/21/2006

Best: Townhouse B&B, Conway, North Wales
Why: Elaine and Alan really care, and give great attention to all the details, from the warm welcome to the ironing board in the hall to the recently redecorated rooms, all color cooridinated! The B&B is right in town, with the castle walls right outside our windows. Elaine's breakfast offerings, including a "sundae" of granola, yogurt and fruit are delicious. We hope to return sometime.

Bob Johnson in Bellevue, WA USA 11/11/2006

Best: 23 St. Mary's (York)
Why: Roomier than Edinburgh, with en suite facilities (I think that's rare for a single), great breakfast, DVD (one night I was just ready to relax with a movie), and very convenient location.

The other two places I stayed (AmarAgua - Edinburgh, and The Corona/Best Western - London) were fine. Small rooms, good breakfast/conversation in Edinburgh, and London was a bargain 45GBP a night with a decent continental breakfast and convenient location - 1 blk from Pimlico tube.

Don Zwicker in Renton, WA USA 11/06/2006

Best: The Henry Guest House, Bath
Why: It felt like "home" after I'd stayed one night. The hotel is very conveniently located near the train and bus stations. Owners Steve and Liz are great folks and personally oversee breakfast. They are available for chats and advice or to make reservations. I was invited to make use of their notebook computer. As a single woman, I felt comfortable coming and going alone at all hours.

Shana Woodfield in Calistoga, CA USA 11/05/2006

Best: Ellergill Guest House, Keswick, Lake District
Why: Great new owners with a "we try harder" ethic. very clean spacious twin and comfortable rooms. excellent fresh prepared breakfast and french pressed coffee.

Janice Straw in Walnut Creek , CA USA 11/03/2006

Best: Cherry Court Hotel, London
Why: SO inexpensive, crisply clean room, friendly and accommodating hosts, just a short walk from Victoria Station. As long as a room is CLEAN, we'd rather spend our money on events and travel, not on extra square footage. Cherry Court is also in the perfect location! (and just far enough away from V.S. that you don't hear noise at night).

Judy Masrud in Dallas, WI USA 10/29/2006

Best: The Vine
Why: We booked at the Vine in Stanton because we love this small village. Our room was in the oldest part of the house and we loved it--lots of character. Because it was a bit warm I left my window open and there was actually a vine growing inside the window. The owners kept a coal fire going for us which we enjoyed after long hikes. Two playful black cats entertained us by the fireside. The atmosphere is very laid back, comfy, and they do a nice breaksfast also. We would definitely stay there again.

Nancy USA 10/27/2006

Best: Colquhoun Guest House
Why: The location is convenient for buses to town. The owners, Jim and Grace are extremely helpful and knowledgeable and saved us a lot of time and money with their helpful tips. The rooms were comfortable and the breakfasts were great. We had planned to change our accomodations around, but stayed there 4 out of our 5 weeks in Britain, using their guest house as a base.

Worst: Quality House in Newcastle
Why: Since there was no recommendation in the 2006 book, we booked a hotel through Lastminute.com at the Waverly station in Edinburgh. Upon arrival, the desk clerk announced our room number to all and sundry (not a good idea for women traveling alone) and when we got to our room in this very dumpy hotel, we found it dirty, with old dirty socks in the closet, a torn shower curtain hanging in the bathroom, and worst of all NO TELEPHONE IN THE ROOM. When I got home I found Lastminute had charged me and then the hotel charged me also. Not a hotel I would recommend!

Lilian Young in Hamilton Square, NJ USA 10/23/2006

Best: Holly Villa, Bath
Why: This is a beautiful home and it is spotless. Jill and Keith are both very helpful, and the breakfasts were first rate. Keith is a good driving advisor. Be sure to ask Jill to share her poem on the trials of married life! Bring your sense of humor with you -- they are a fun-loving couple.

Michael Schnell in New Bremen, OH USA 10/22/2006

Best: Warwick House in the Cotswolds
Why: Charlie Grant is funny, friendly and informative. Gorgeous antique furniture and stained glass windows. 5 minute walk from train station. If you have bags to carry, call a taxi from the list just outside the station. Inexpensive internet access. Cat is friendly, but inobtrusive and not allowed in the rooms.

Also consider the Badger Room at "Serendipity" near in Bradford on Avon near Bath. Best if you have a car, but can still get into Bath by bus without any problems. You can see 3 wild badgers from your own private balcony each night. Consider a camera with night vision -- really amazing.

Park House Guest House in Warwick was adequate, inexpensive accomodation. Difficult to book a room because owner doesn't answer emails often and if you call the phone number given (his cell phone), his English is not good enough to communicate the basics (like if he has a double room available, the price etc).

Judy & Mark Anthony in Dallas, TX USA 10/21/2006

Best: Loved all accomodations from Rick Steves Guide
Why: We stayed at Parkside in Bath, The Townhouse in Conwy, The Turret House in Edinburgh, Crook Lodge in York, and Kensington Gardens Hotel in London. All were great. We had a spectacular view of the castle from our room in Wales and all the innkeepers were pleasent to talk with. Kensington Gardesn was more of a classic hotel, but a great bargain for London.

We also stayed at the Arreton House in Blockley (not in the book). The room was nice, the town nice, and the people nice.

Ken in Chandler, AZ USA 10/20/2006

Best: The Emsley Guest House
Why: Out of all of the B & B's we stayed at in England, this was the best. The owners (Keith and Val) are some of the nicest, gracious, and most welcoming people we have ever met. They spent quite a bit of time with us when we arrived, giving lots of recommendations for restaurants and things we should do while in Stratford. We had the York room, which was well taken care of and extremely clean. The breakfast was unbelievably delicious-all other breakfasts we had at other B & B's simply could not compare. They also offer free parking, great for those who are touring the countryside via car. The location is only a few minutes walk away from the city center. For all of this, we only paid 60 pounds for two adults! We wished we would have stayed longer than one night, but will definitely go back again!

Jennifer in Lynnwood, Wa USA 10/11/2006

Best: Pinewood House B&B
Why: Small, clean, comfortable... but most importantly, the propritors Peter and Annette are awesome. Their enthusiasm for the area is contagious, and their knowlage (and maps) will get you to all the most beautifull spots in the area without getting you lost!!!!

Dan Weiner in Redding , CA USA 10/06/2006

Best: Crestow House, Stow-on-the Wold
Why: Wonderful house, location, food and host.

Gene Frekko in Winston-Salem, NC USA 10/03/2006

Best: Thistle Kensington Palace
Why: rooms are somewhat "dog-eared", but service was great and very close to tube, restaurants and right accross from Kensington and Hyde Parks, and close to nice restaurants. Price was VERY competitive.

Doug in Naperville, IL USA 09/20/2006

Best: Wayside Manor Farm near Gatwick Airport, London
Why: This home is elegant and beautifully furnished. Philip and his wife were very gracious. Our rooms lovely and were only 65 pounds (bathroom and breakfast included). We could have whatever we wanted for breakfast in their beautiful dining room. This B&B is a wonderful option if you are flying in or out of Gatwick. I think the description in the book should be more enthusiastic.

Worst: 23 St. Mary's B&B, York
Why: It's not that this place is so bad; it's just that I expected something better because of the book's description and the positive comments on the website. It was the worst place we stayed and not the cheapest. Our room (#8), which we reached after climbing many, many stairs, was small and stuffy. The mattress was not very comfortable.

Margaret Hodel in Durham, NC USA 08/30/2006

Best: The Elizabeth Hotel in Eccleston Square, London
Why: The room was very clean and comfortable, and it came with a balcony overlooking the private Eccleston Square Gardens (which hotel guests have access to upon request). The breakfast was really great (eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, baked beans, cereal, great coffee) and was included in the room cost. The hotel is also a short walk from the Victoria station.

Christine Lee in Staten Island, NY USA 08/28/2006

Best: Millfield Guesthouse, Edinburgh
Why: Liz Broomfield is fun, helpful, and has a beautiful home. This was my second stay there and I would go again if she weren't retiring.

Worst: Swan Cottage, Conwy, North Wales
Why: Dirty, unbelievably dirty...dog smell and barking...The Roberts were friendly, but...

Jaunita Eichman in Wirtz, VA USA 08/26/2006

Best: Arnott House in York
Why: A good night's sleep, a wonderful breakfast, a peaceful envirnoment, a great location, and Kim Robbins was very helpful.

Bruce Lindgren in Independence, MO USA 08/25/2006

Best: Airdenair Guest House in Edinburgh
Why: It was spotless, the hosts were friendly and helpful.

Worst: Swan B & B in Conwy
Why: We stayed 3 nights in a double at the back of the house. Room was completed this summer, well before our August stay. The bathroom carpeting had not been vacuumed, carpet still had construction dust from tile and pipe installation. Shower, sink and toilet had not been cleaned from previous guests, perhaps many previous guests. Looking at the dirt stains in the sink, it may have been a month since it was scrubbed. A dog odor was detected in the stairwell. When I paid the Roberts at their apartment door, the odor was almost overpowering. This is where the breakfast cooking was done! Tables and placemats in breakfast room were not wiped, the placemats were stained and crumbs were not cleaned from the tables daily. I recommend you remove this accomodation from your book. How I wish I had read these recommendations before I booked with Swan. I certainly will for our next trip.

Sharron STEVENS in Oberstaufenbach, Germany 08/23/2006

Best: Bath YMCA
Why: Clean, well run, and cheap. We got a double room for ourselves. Sure the bunk beds were not super comfortable, but pretty good for a hostel. And the location was great.

Worst: York Youth Hotel
Why: It's not that bad, but it's not as nice as the Bath YMCA... not quite as clean or well run or convenient. No hot breakfast served. A little noisy.

Summers Henderson in Somverville, MA USA 08/18/2006

Best: All
Why: Cornerways B&B - Chipping Campden; Carole was wonderful. Very helpful with directions, information, and recommendations for dinner. Berkeley Guest House - Keswick:We were well taken care of here. Our last night sitting out on the porch with Barbara, hubby, her in-laws and friends we picked up lots of advice for sights in York and London. Breakfast was great. 23 St Mary's - York; Julie was a delight. Breakfast was great, Mints were a nice touch. Helpful with directions and recommendations for dinner.

Lisa in Houston, Tx USA 08/17/2006

Best: Airdenair Guest House - Edinburgh
Why: Every other comment on this B&B is 100% true - Jill runs a wonderful place that is clean and comfortable. She also cooks up a great breakfast to get you on your way for the day. She was so kind and made our whole family feel at home.

Worst: Elizabeth House - London
Why: To put it simply, this place was a complete dump. I realize you get what you pay for, and this was definitely cheap (for London, that is), but this was by far the worst hotel I've ever stayed in. It was dirty and run down (our first and only disappointment in over 18 Rick Steves recommendated hotels we've experienced).

Kevin Stuart in Alexandria, VA USA 08/16/2006

Best: Bryn B&B, Conwy, Wales
Why: I don't know how I could recommend a place higher than the Bryn! For starters, Alison is a delight and her house is right next to the town walls thet surround beautiful Conwy. The rooms are huge, the breakfast was terrific, Alison did our laundry, she has free Internet (she just got a laptop) - it's a terrific B&B, best of our trip by far. The Millfield House in Edinburgh is great, too, but Liz Broomfield is retiring so you better get there quick! She's really funny - even if retirement has her stressed! Great place, big rooms, nice breakfast.

Worst: Sycamore Guest House, York
Why: I would still recommend the Sycamore - just be aware that it's a guest house, not a B&B. Elizabeth and her husband are nice, but it's a pretty low-tech operation. Don't expect a romantic place, just a room to sleep in and get going. I'd stay there for 1 night, but if you're in York for a few days (I'm not sure why you would do that, however) it's an okay place.

Dave Johnson in Sacramento, CA USA 08/14/2006

Best: Airdenair Guest House - Edinburgh www.airdenair.com
Why: Jill was great, 100% funny and sarcastic. We came back one afternoon to find our drying laundry gone from the bathroom and in a bag on our door having been hung out on the clothesline for the few dry hours that day.

Arreton House - Blockley(Cotswolds) Gloria and John were great, gracious and friendly. The intimate lounge also used for breakfast, made for great conversation with others on holiday. Beautiful patio and gardens, this location is convenient for anyone driving in the area. 20 minutes from Stratford, 90 minutes from Heathrow, Moreton in Marsh, Chipping Campden both 5 minutes.

Winchester Hotel - London(Victoria Tube stop)www.winchester-hotel.net While nothing special, this was a great value for London, the only B&B we found for less than £100/night. Rooms with comfy beds, friendly staff, free internet. Shelina (7a-7p) was very helpful with airport transport options and baggage in and out.

Worst: Alcuin Lodge - York
Why: While cute and reasonably priced, Alcuin lacked the personality we have come to expect from ETBD suggestions. In 3 nights' stay, we never met Issy. The Polish student tasked with breakfast, while friendly, was clearly left to fend for herself even with 5 full rooms of guests trying to get breakfast. We were expecting leisurely meals, but for four of us traveling together, our breakfasts could arrive 5-10 minutes apart. I hope this location gets a close look before 2007's book.

Joel & Stacy in Emeryville, CA USA 08/13/2006

Best: Castle Hotel in Ruthin
Why: We spent 2 nights here and thought it a lovely old hotel. The room was clean and modern. We were able to get a mid-week internet price of £49 per night without breakfast instead of the normal £99 per night with breakfast so it made it a GREAT deal.

Kathy McCartney in Prescott, AZ USA 08/08/2006

Best: Cornerways in Chipping Campden, Amar Agua in Edinburgh
Why: Cornerways was very spacious for a family of four with a very friendly hostess. Amar Agua was impeccably clean and comfortable.

Wendie McKernan in Mount Horeb, WI USA 08/03/2006

Best: The Robin Hood Hotel
Why: We arrived in Blackpool about 9:30 p.m. and called. Paul (the owner) said he could squeeze us in for two nights. As I got out of the cab, Paul shook my hand and welcomed us. He then asked if we'd eaten. When we said no, he suggested we drop our bags upstairs and then he'd drive us to a group of restaurants and make some suggesions, then we could walk back along the shore. The room was lovely, breakfast was great and Paul and Katherine were delightful hosts. The morning we left, Paul offered to drive us to the city centre. And it turns out that they actually weren't booking anyone because their daughter was about to have a baby any day!! Great folks!!

Linda in Atlanta, GA USA 07/25/2006

Best: Number Nine, Stow on the Wold
Why: Hosts are terrific, rooms are elegant, price is excellent, and English breakfast is the best.

Worst: Bryn Derwen, Conwy, North Wales
Why: The "triple" room was way too small to be a triple. Hosts were friendly but harried, rushed, and didn't seem to enjoy what they were doing. Overall, standards not up the other places we stayed based on Rick Steves' recommendations.

Ellen Hirzy in Washington, DC United States 07/20/2006

Best: Aonach Mor Guest House
Why: We had a fabulous experience and highly recommend Aonach Mor. The accomodations were great, breakfast was a treat -- especially the traditional Scottish breakfast, we had a family room and a single to house our family of four (Mom, Dad and 16 and 20 year old sons). Ross was helpful and very friendly. We'd go back in a heartbeat! Thank you for including in your book.

Tracy Hudson in San Diego, CA USA 07/19/2006

Best: Enjoyed Alcuin Lodge in York and Salibury in Edinburgh
Why: Excellent food, spacious, well kept rooms and dining areas.

Worst: Jubilee Hotel, London
Why: Horribly noisy with no attempt to quiet guests. Told us the price in pounds, but charged it to our credit card in US dollars (without asking) at a terrible exchange rate.

Kelley Grant-Kelley in Pataskala, OH USA 07/18/2006

Best: Premier Travel Inn, all over
Why: We stayed in the "souless rooms" of the Premier Travel Inn chain several times as we drove from Edinburgh to London. We found that we could always expect a clean room with a fair amount of space for a good price. It was close to the main attractions in York, Edinburgh and London. It was quiet and the staff were helpful. Whenever we didn't have a charming centrally located B&B, this chain was a GREAT option. I would highly recommend them!

Worst: Georgian House, London
Why: Room was filthy, box spring was water stained, floor had not been vacuumed, sheets were stained. It was the most disgusting place I have ever walked into. We could not stay there and found the Premier Travel Inn at the base of the London Eye a much cleaner and nicer experience in spite of the cost.

Carrie in Plainfield, NJ USA 07/17/2006

Best: The Henry Guest House, Bath
Why: Good breakfasts, good beds, friendly staff, and a convenient location.

Kyla Gurganus in Ypsilanti, MI USA 07/16/2006

Best: Three Abbey Green in Bath
Why: Everyone at Three Abbey Green went out of their way to take care of us. Derek, Maria and even the young Polish girls all seemed to do everything possible to make our stay enjoyable. We appreciated Maria coming in late on Saturday evening to meet us after we arrived on the train and then getting up early on Sunday morning to fix us breakfast so that we could catch a Mad Max tour. Derel made our breakfasts so enjoyable by sharing his knowledge of Bath with us and inquiring about our sightseeing plans. Derek went and bought us chocolate crossaints after he found out how much we liked them in France. Even one of the Polish girls fixed the TV in our room and provided my son with milk and cereal after the prescribed breakfast time. The rooms were lovely with all the old antiques. The spaciousness of the rooms was wonderful. The beds were wonderful. It was truly all great. Our stay at this B and B was definitely the best place we stayed the whole trip, without a doubt.

Kristi Davis in Carmel, IN USA 07/15/2006

Worst: Hotel on Belgrave Road
Why: This area is pretty dumpy, regardless of what the book says. There is not much around, but some tiny convenience stores. Yes, it is close to the train station, but is that why you came to London? Stations are everywhere and convenient! I would stay in (#!)Soho or (#2) Westminster if I came back, you can still walk to all the major sights.

Adrienne in Esslingen, Germany 07/11/2006

Best: Ellergill B&B in Keswick
Why: Great location, most comfortable accomodation we had, modern room, friendly owners, great breakfast

Worst: Elizabeth House B&B on Warwick Way in Victoria, London
Why: Disgustingly dirty and run down. Paid for an ensuite and didn't get one. Shared bath hadn't been cleaned in forever. Chintziest breakfast on our trip. Lobby furniture was all torn and dirty. They make you pay upfront before you see the place. We left anyway and went to the Cherry Court, which was small but very clean, and had friendly owners for the same price. You need to remove this B&B from your 2007 book if it's not too late. All other recommendations we tried were fine.

Gail Ferguson in Roswell, GA USA 07/08/2006

Best: Holly Villa, Bath; Airdenair House, Edinburgh; Ellas Crag, Newlands Valley, Keswick
Why: Holly Villa - Our first night in Great Britain and Jill gave us The Talk - told us everything from how showers work to parking to where to buy The Highway Code so we would have more confidence driving. We relied on her advice throughout the trip. Breakfasts were great! Airdenair House - great views, great breakfasts, don't need to take the bus to Edinburgh Castle. If you like to walk, it is in walking distance. Ellas Crag - beautiful location, incredible hikes from the home so you don't need to use the car. We hiked from the house over Cat Bells to Derwentwater and into Keswick and back. Wonderful!

Barbara Startz in Seattle, WA USA 07/02/2006

Best: Claverley Hotel - London
Why: Great breakfast and location.

Worst: Cranleigh House - Bath
Why: I really hate doing this since the room and owners were so nice but the warm June weather and the inability to open the windows more than 3 or 4 inches on the back side rooms(owner said this was insurance related) made staying in the room intolerable. This was a shame since the rooms facing the street could open their windows all the way and could get some air. They really should add bars or whatever it takes to allow opening these windows at night. This is really a nice place but don't go in the summer or at least ask for street facing rooms. I asked for the rear, garden facing room on the recommendation of this site but they apparently didn't go there in the summer.

Don Lundy in Modesto, CA USA 06/28/2006

Best: Kenvie Guest House - Edinburgh
Why: This was clean, had character, was convenient to public transportation and QUIET... a real plus in a big city. We were delighted with this setting!

Worst: Elizabeth House - London
Why: You describe this as "Spartan." It's a dump! Shredded furniture, lamps without bulbs, pigeons coming in through the windows, curtains so loaded with dust I'm sure they weren't washed in ages. You do yourself a disservice by having your name associated with this in any way! We chose to leave even though it meant losing money...and I hate losing money!

Best: Craigroyston House, Pitlochry, Scotland

Best: dunedin guest house
Why: We were traveling with 2 families and grandma, all total 10 people. David was very helpful in accomodating us. Great family room for 5! Clean, well kept and our least expensive stay on our trip to the lake district and Scotland.

deanne benetz USA 06/19/2006

Best: Castlebank Hotel, Conwy, Wales
Why: We began our trip through Northern England and Edinburgh with three nights at the Castlebank in Conwy, Wales. Henrique and the others at Castlebank get our highest rating in all areas. Our room was beautiful and clean. Dining at the Castlebank was wonderful. And the owners made us feel totally welcome and comfortable from the first minute we walked in the door. If you're going to Northern Wales, stay at the Castlebank. You won't find a nicer place.

Steve Rudolph in Madison, WI USA 06/13/2006

Best: Airdenair Guest House in Edinburgh
Why: The rooms were spacious, clean, had great views, and the breakfasts were very good. Jill (owner) was warm and friendly, and offered good info/suggestions. She came to our rescue on our last evening. We'd taken our laundry to a local laudromat. That evening, we picked it up and came back to Airdenair. When we discovered that most of the clothes weren't even dry (!), she offered to dry them in her own clothes dryer. Thank you, Jill!

Linda & Ron in Clearwater, FL USA 06/10/2006

Best: Glan Heulog Guest House in Conwy
Why: Viv and Stan (owners) were very warm and friendly, offering us very helpful advice and a great breakfast each morning. The rooms were quite comfortable. But what really impressed us the most was what they did AFTER we checked out. My husband unknowning left his eye glasses in our room. Viv and Stan knew that we had taken a cab to the train station in the nearby town of Colwyn Bay (on our way to Edinburgh). When they discoverd the glasses, they quickly drove to the train station to find us. Imagine our surprise and delight when they came to platform with glasses in hand. That was truly above and beyond, and epitomized their hospitality!

Linda & Ron in Clearwater, FL USA 06/10/2006

Best: 23 St Mary's in York
Why: The best blend of British B&B charm and American levels of shower/bathtub comfort of the entire trip. Our room, at the top of the house, was practically silent - no noise from the street or other guests. The bed was the only one of the trip with blankets and sheets, instead of duvets. (Which left us overheated and sweaty in other B&B's. What's with the duvets anyway?) The room was spacious and pretty, breakfast was excellent, and the host & hostess were very informative and welcoming.

Worst: Bryn Derwen B&B in Conwy
Why: I wouldn't say they were bad, but if you stay in the Pine Room, above the family's living room, be prepared for television noise until 10:30. The shower ran out of hot water both mornings, in spite of my shower being brief, and an hour after my husband's, and the wiring in the house (which they said they'd been having problems with) fried my mother's hairdryer, even though she used a voltage converter and plug adaptor. The hosts were very nice, but I felt like maybe they hadn't been running the B&B for long, or maybe they were a bit burnt out. I don't know. I will definitley stay elsewhere when I go back to Conwy.

Siobhan Keleher in San Diego, CA USA 05/28/2006

Best: ALL Rick Steves' recommendations
Why: We stayed at: The Henry and 3 Abbey Green in Bath, Glan Heulog Guest House in Conwy, The Dunedin in Edinburgh, The Sycamore in York. All had friendly hosts, an excellent location to attractions, a tasty breakfast, and reasonable rates for the area. Throughout our trip we knew we could trust the next place because it was "pre-screened."

Best: St. Mary's Gate in Arundel
Why: Located just a few minutes from the impressive Arundel Castle and directly across from the abbey, St. Mary's Gate Bed and Breakfast occupies a building that dates back several hundred years. Terry and staff have transformed this authentic English pub into a trip back in time for travelers. Clean and comfy would certainly describled this place.

Best: Double Dance Bed and Breakfast Studio
Why: We discoverd the perfect place to explore London without dealing with the hustle and bustle. The Double Dance Bed and Breakfast Studio is a full size studio apartment with a full stocked kitchen. Just a few minutes on the train takes you into London. Plus Double Dance is not far from Hever Castle and Leeds Castle. Penny the owner makes sure her guest feel like they are home. My wife and I loved this place! If you are looking for plenty of room plus all the comforts of home, Double Dance is for you!

Michael in Marion, AR USA 04/17/2006

Best: Touchstone Bed and Breakfast
Why: Just outside of Rick's Bourton on the Water (a southwestern Cotswold town), the Touchstone Bed and Breakfast looks like a building dated back to the 1700's but in reality it's a modern bed and breakfast. The owners have designed the perfect place for a quiet and peaceful stay with all the comforts of home, plus the breakfast is a meal for a king!

Michael in Marion, AR USA 04/17/2006

Best: Hillenvale Guest House in Stroud, Great Britain
Why: Situated on top of a hill, overlooking the large Cotswold town of Stroud, the Hillenvale Guest House offers a breathtaking view of country living while still being just minutes away from modern conveniences. Bob and Sue (the owners) make sure their guest feel like part of the family. The full English breakfast is more than one person can eat at a single meal. For a very afordable price, this bed and breakfast is a bargain.

Best: Three Abbey Green in Bath
Why: Derek was informative, nice and the rooms were beautiful. We stayed an extra night. The kids loved the town and the b and b.

Worst: The Elizabeth Hotel
Why: Quad room was so small we could not put suitcases anywhere. Would have rented the apartment if we had known quad it was so small.

Wendy Barnett in Los Gatos, CA USA 04/17/2006

Best: The Henry - Bath
Why: I truly felt at home and comfortable there. Sue was extremely welcoming. It's close to the train station (which equals close to internet access and lauderette), yet still quiet and extremely close to all tour meeting places and many attractions. Over breakfast, Sue and her daughter chatted with the guests comfortably, and I got excellent advice on must-see's in town. Even with shared baths and no elevator, I would highly recommend this place for single travelers as it's easy to mingle with the other guests at breakfast and the hosts are so easygoing.

Maria Strine in Cincinnati, Oh USA 04/15/2006

Best: Badger's Hall, Chiipping Campden
Why: Delightful, clean & cozy tea room and B&B. The rooms were well sized and beautifully decorated. The hosts, Karen and Paul (& dog Lillian) were so friendly and warm. We really felt like we were in a good friend's home. Meals and tea goodies were delicious as well.

Josette Kehl in Tucson, AZ USA 03/29/2006

Best: St. Mary's B&B in York
Why: The owners were so very friendly and welcoming and the breakfast was the best we had our entire trip. The room and en suite bathroom was spacious, clean and we loved the biscuits they included with the tea in the room! Interestingly, we went in early March and it wasn't any cheaper than what was in the book even though it was off-season. Just a side-note since it was a fantastic B&B.

We stayed our 1st night at the Coachhouse and wish we had visited St. Mary's before rather than after booking with the Coachhouse. Now that we know, we won't stay anywhere else in York.

Worst: Harding Hotel in Dublin
Why: The hotel smells very strongly of cleaning agents and is pretty threadbare for the cost. The showers are simply a part of the bathroom floor (a sloped part with a drain at the end) with no doors, just a curtain. The hotel is also attached to a pub that has karaoke on certain nights and with the paper thin walls, you feel like you're sleeping in the same room as the singers.

Drake in Seattle, WA USA 03/12/2006

Best: All of them
Why: York: 23 St Marys Breakfast was great; Excellent coffee! The room was cozy and clean. Our hosts were friendly and helpful. We washed out some clothes and hung them in the bathroom to dry. When we came back from our day of touring, the bathroom heat was turned up and the door closed and our clothes were dry! I had brought a book with that I wasn't enjoying and Julie let me swap one from their bookshelves. Enjoyed it very much, thank you!

Edinburgh: Priestville Colin and Trina were very friendly and helpful. Our room was comfy and the bed warm! Breakfast was very good.

London: Lime Tree Hotel Because we were in town during the off season, we got a great price and it was a very lovely B&B. The breakfast was good, the room very comfortable, and the location was smashing! Just a short jaunt to Victoria and right around the corner from a great fish & chip place.

Jolene in Centuria, WI USA 02/17/2006

Best: Millfield B&B, Edinburgh
Why: Liz Broomfield only takes in 6 guests at a time, so you are guaranteed to have a warm, highly personalized stay. It's very likely that you won't have to share a bathroom as there are several in the house (and few guests). So if the thought of sharing a bathroom puts you off, don't let it! I think it is worth staying here just to meet Mrs. Broomfield and have her cook breakfast for you, but the rooms are beautiful as well. My parents and I left Edinburgh feeling we should send her a thank-you note for being such a wonderful hostess.

At about 50 pounds (about $85) per night for a massive, spotless 4-person family room (1 double bed and 2 twins) with a washbasin, comfy overstuffed chair, and a beautiful bay window with a gorgeous view to the south of Edinburgh, it is well worth the taxi fare of about 4 pounds per way to the Royal Mile to say here rather than the central and efficient but bland Travelodge off the Royal Mile (which is about 72 pounds per double room per night). (You can also take the very convenient bus (just around the corner, about 5 houses away) for 80 pence per person per ride.)

Her breakfasts are very tasty and include lots of helpful travel tips and an interesting story about how she got into the B&B business.

Mrs. Broomfield says (as of early January) that she is planning to retire in October, so make sure to stay here if you are in Edinburgh this year.

Places like the Millfield enhance your travel experience while staying at chain hotels adds nothing extra.

Thank you to Rick Steves for finding this place!

Best: Knight Residence
Why: As Rick says, it is good to splurge once in awhile. My family spent 2006 New Years in Edinburgh. We had beaten ourselves up earlier and needed a place to spread out and rest. We splurged and stayed in a 2 bedroom apartment at the Knight Residence. We had a wonderful time at Hogmanay, the Scottish New Years celebration. If you want to splurge in Edinburgh, this is the place to stay. Convenient to the castle and lots of space to stretch out in. When we arrived, there was a Christmas tree in our living room, a bottle of Scotch for the adults, and Walker's cookies for the kids. The concierge was very attentive. We spent New Years with 100,000 of our closest friends, watching the fireworks over Edinburgh castle.
