Best and worst restaurants:

Best: Edleweiss, Murren
Why: Good service, good food, good value.

Worst: staggerstubi, Murren
Why: Surly or non-existant service, overpriced food. I paid 22 francs for a vegetable plate that was a gulp or two only. I ate there twice, tried a third time, but left due to long wait...almost nobody else there.

Terry Froese in Anacortes, WA USA 10/06/2008

Best: hotel oberland in lauterbrunnen
Why: Great service, friendly and efficient waitstaff. Nice menu selection... cheese fondue was excellent!

Leslie in Mankato, MN USA 07/27/2008

Best: Schipfe 16 in Zurich
Why: Food very tasty and staff excellent with language and service.

Karren Tolliver in New Port Richey, FL USA 03/07/2008

Best: Luzern: Restaurant Galliker
Why: great restaurant on s. side of city-- not too far from HBF. Local hangout, but friendly staff and reasonable prices...

John & Diane Hearing in Maple Valley, WA USA 10/15/2007

Best: Whymper Stube in Zermatt, and Hotel Restaurant Schiff in Luzern
Why: Delicious fondue and other cheese dishes at Whymper Stube. Schiff has a friendly staff and outdoor seating along the Reuss River. Their flaming tart was so good, we ate there twice.

Nikki in San Jose, CA USA 09/27/2007

Best: Restaurant Taube in Luzern, Hotel Mittaghorn in Gimmelwald, Piz Gloria Restaurant at the Schilthorn, and Manora Cafeteria in Zurich
Why: Restaurant Taube was very good. The Chapel Bridge Rosti was especially tasty. Despite the fact that Walter is in his 80s now, he continues to offer his guests a delicious 3 course dinner with wine for only 15 CHF. The Piz Gloria Rotating Restaurant at the Shilthorn has good food, and the views are amazing. At the Manora Cafeteria in the Manor department store you get to pile as much food as you would like onto your plate for a very reasonable price. Everything tastes really good there too.

Aimee in Anaheim, CA USA 09/26/2007

Best: Hotel Restuarant Traube in Appenzell
Why: Outstanding food and wine beautifully presented in a friendly, relaxed, gemuetlich atmosphere.

Worst: Staegerstuebli in Muerren
Why: Small portions of not the greatest food. Something may have changed since RS tauted this as "the" place to eat in Muerren. Or maybe we caught them on a bad day?

Bill Gordon in Miami, FL USA 07/12/2007

Best: Citta Vecchia, Interlaken
Why: Outstanding food and service. It was like being in Italy and the owner/operator was a delight to talk with. He acknowledged the Rick Steves guidebook immediately and was thankful for the mention.

Michael Maturo in North Haven, CT USA 07/05/2007

Best: Wirtschaft Neumarkt in Zurich, Schiff was great too in Lucerne
Why: The food and service was excellent!

Sara Shaughnessy in Palm City, Fl USA 07/04/2007

Best: Baren in Unterseen by Interlaken
Why: Nice people and good food. Ate there twice!

Kathleen Burkley in Peoria, IL USA 06/13/2007

Best: Hotel Baren, Wengen
Why: 4-course dinners included (half-board) at $16/night. The most reasonable and best meals we had during our 2 1/2 weeks in Switzerland.

Eileen Kemp in Portland, OR USA 10/28/2006

Best: Pizzeria Roma, Zermatt
Why: Not in Rick's book, but it should be. This was a very pleasant surprise. Excellent food (much more than pizza!) and friendly service at reasonable prices. Walk down from the station, turn left at the curch and it's on your right side about 100 meters. The best deal in Zermatt.

Worst: Restaurant du Pont, Zermatt
Why: The du Pont should be removed from your recommended list as the food and service were the worse we found during a month in Europe. 19 euros for a dryed out "chicken nugget" and absolutely terrible service. Avoid the du Pont in Zermatt!!

Bob Alexander in Sammamish, WA USA 10/16/2006

Best: Hiltl Veggie Restaurant, Zurich
Why: great food, self serv makes it easy. ambiance great too. open sundays.

Susan in Miami, FL USA 09/21/2006

Best: Hotel Steckleberg
Why: What a little gem for lunch! We had the most awesome sausages and soup for lunch and it was not expensive.

Maxine Weber in Merion Station, PA USA 09/04/2006

Best: Hiltl
Why: Big "bunny" billboards at the old Hiltl location describe where the restaurant moved but you have to read German. Location until Spring 2007 is at Bleicherweg 5, 8001 Zurich; just walk west from Paradeplatz and you'll see the black signs. The "new" Hiltl has a modern Berkeley or TriBeCa feel to it and the buffet was fantastic. Note if you're doing the buffet: bread is free, so weigh your plate first, then load up on the bread. Ja, the draft "Bio" beer is expensive, but is about the same price as organic porter in Berkeley or NYC. Enjoy!

James Hom in Silicon Valley, CA USA 08/11/2006

Best: Kontorei; Zurich
Why: Menu and wine selection

Walt Zerkow in Houston, TX USA 08/10/2006

Best: Stagerstubli, in Murren
Why: had wonderful raclette portion of fondue. Also enjoyed the Chinese restaurant in Murren. It was the freshest I've ever had and the owner has to drive three hours to Bern weekly to get the food.

Shannon Hammond in Hoover, AL USA 08/08/2006

Best: we rarely ate out after the first day!
Why: My wife and I lost weight on the Swiss diet - eat as much Fruhstuck as you possibly can and then survive on COOP picnics (packaged salad and tuna fish) for the rest of the day. I recommend never drinking anything in a Swiss restaurant - water is about $3 a glass and beer is about $5 and forget about wine. Just stock up at the local Coop - you can, after all, drink a beer in public in Europe. What's a beer drinker to do when the Coop doesn't stock cold beer and most hotel rooms don't have a fridge? Drop by the COOP first thing in the morning and stick your beer at the back of the soft drink fridge, then retrieve later in the day ready for consumption!

Worst:
Why: Migros does NOT seem to stock beer!

Roger Satterthwaite in Pasadena, CA USA 07/30/2006

Best: Mountain Hostel, Gimmelwald
Why: Highly encourage that if you can not take the 2 menu food at Walter's Mittaghorn, go to the mountain hostel. Great food, cheap. Cheese FOndue and that bread thing (Klen something) were awesome

michigander in san jose, ca USA 07/19/2006

Best: Eiger Guesthouse Restaurant
Why: Excellent rosti, pumpkin soup, and creme brulee. The service was EXCELLENT!

Kristi Magee in Landstuhl, Germany 07/14/2006

Worst: Hiltl Vegetarian
Why: Unfortunately, it has been under renovation since January. When we looked through the door there was only a giant hole in the ground. They said they'd be open by September but call first to make sure. The sign on the door also said to go to the food market in the basement of the department store around the corner for Hiltl Indian food but we didn't really find anything except for some take out.

Richard in Cupertino, CA USA 05/25/2006

Best: The Crazy Cow, Zurich
Why: Good food but pricey. The restaurant was quite smoke filled and the waiters weren't good English speakers so you might want to eat elsewhere.

Richard in Cupertino, CA USA 05/24/2006

Best: Rathaus Brewery in Lucerne
Why: Great view on the river, excellent beer and food.

Stacey in Napoli, Italia 05/23/2006

Best: Hotel Oberland, Lauterbrunnen
Why: Every meal was excellent. Try the raclette... it is better than fondue by far. They make the best cream of vegetable soup I have ever had. Staff was friendly and the service was perfect.

Worst: Hotel Silberhorn
Why: I must say, the food here was absolutely excellent...have the veal steak. The problem was the service. We weren't guests of the hotel and were treated as second-class patrons. We waited 40 minutes after our dinner plates were cleared for the bill. We were never offered coffee or dessert and literally had to wave our arms over our head to get one of the waitresses to notice us. Even after that it was another 10 minutes before we got our bill.

Brenda Sheridan in Yorktown Heights, NY USA 05/15/2006

Best: Hotel Stechelberg
Why: The owners are always there and very attentive. The same waiter has waited on us every year for the past 15 years, and he is a very helpful and efficient person. And last but not least - the food is just wonderful. Try the trout in season. We will be there again this September.

Wes in Lincoln City, OR USA 05/05/2006

Best: Pizzeria Taverna Italiana
Why: The service was immaculate, and the food was exceptional! I also the enjoyed the atmosphere as well.

Heng Tran in Wichita, KS USA 04/08/2006

Best: Piz Gloria Restaurant atop Schilthorn
Why: "James Bond" breakfast may be rather expensive, but it includes plenty of food, and an out-of-this-world view.

Steven Schumacher in Katy, TX USA 04/04/2006
