Italy

Best and worst restaurants:

Best: L'Antica Trattoria (Sorrento)
Why: Without a doubt, this is one of the finest restaurants I've ever visited on holidays! Rick lists this restaurant as a "splurge" and it certainly was that, but the food was incredible and the service impeccable. I had the impression that Aldo and the group really take good care of RS readers.

Ken in Vernon, Canada 08/26/2008

Best: Gino Sorbillo, Naples
Why: By far, the best pizza on Earth is created here. While there was a HUGE crowd and we waited almost 2 hours for a table, 6 of us ordered enough pizza and wine to feed a whole Italian football squad for the price of an average meal for 2 in Florence. The atmosphere, the food, the city... everything about that meal was perfect.

Paul Rosini in Victoria, BC Canada 08/17/2008

Worst: none
Why: It was all good

Ray Bartley in Saint Helens, OR USA 08/16/2008

Worst:
Why: Some of the restaurants were listed as "casual" or less expensive and they were still fancier than we expected and farther out of our price range. One example is Target in Rome--we didn't think it was very casual.

Karen and Andy Ramroth in San Carlos, CA USA 08/15/2008

Best: Spadaforte in Siena
Why: Friendly staff, great food, great view.

Suzanne in St. Paul, MN USA 08/12/2008

Best: Miky's Restaurant, Monterosso al Mare
Why: Delicious food with gourmet presentation and very helpful and friendly staff.

Ann Doty in Juneau, AK USA 08/11/2008

Best: IL Pirata- Sicilian Restaurant in Vernazza
Why: The Brothers that own the restaurant have a great sense of humor, great breakfast, lunch & dinner-especially the pastries and fruit slushies---Even the locals eat here! Don't bypass this great restaurant for so-called local food--this IS local, Italian cuisine with some great Sicilian specialities!!!! These brothers will also be offering rooms in the near future.

Lynn in Colbert, WA USA 08/10/2008

Best: Ristorante Al Castello-Vernazza. Italy
Why: Massimo was great! We made a reservation for the next night and had a table with a beautiful view. Our waiter was was kind and helpful. The lasagne al pesto was superb!

Worst: Ristorante Incadase da Piva- Vernazza Italy
Why: This is not an inexpensive restaurant. Bread is placed on your table when seated. Later when the bill arrives we see Euros 2/pp. When we added up the bill a couple of times, our total was different than the bottom line. When I tried to ask the older man who hand wrote the bill, he was not patient at all. It turned out that some of his numbers were difficult to read. When I realized the amounts were correct, I tried to apologize but he was upset and basically kicked us out of the restaurant, "presto!" After one month of travel in Italy and Paris, this was probably one of the few unpleasant incidents. Actually, I found the Parisians to be friendlier and more honest compared to the Italiens. When I was in Venice for three days, I experienced two different times when I gave a Euro 50 and my change was not correct. I had to remind them for the remainder of the change. In Paris, they seemed to put your bill out in the open as they counted back your change to you.

Natalie Winslow in Monroe, WA USA 08/05/2008

Best: Il Buca di Bacco, Corso Cavour 299, Orvieto
Why: It was charming, excellent cuisine, and reasonable and about a block away from our hotel, Hotel Corso. We also enjoyed these "picks" from the book:

Trattoria da Gigino, Via degli Archi 15, Sorrento. They welcomed us with a glass of prosecco, the atmosphere was gracious and relaxed, and the food superb. At Ristorante Delfino, on the Marina Grande, we had a wonderful lunch of very fresh fish under the care of sweet Luisa, who is every bit as effervescent as you said.

Ristorante Il Sacco Fiorentino, Volterra. It was charmingly quaint and had excellent food.

Trattoria San Giacomo, at Salita Serbelloni 45 in Bellagio, where the Rice with Perch (riso con pesce persico) was indeed excellent. Gelateria del Borgo had amazing dark chocolate and ginger gelati.

Worst: Toss up: La Carbonara, Vecchia Varenna, and Locanda nel Loggia
Why: Rome's La Carbonara, on Campo dei Fiori, we had the worst meal of a 2-month trip! In Cortona at Locanda nel Loggia, the restaurant overlooking the Piazza Repubblica, we found the service surly and the food barely edible—and not inexpensive.

In Varenna, at Vecchia Varenna, the service was wonderful, the food was marginal and very expensive.

Mary Jo & Patrick in Portland, OR USA 07/29/2008

Best: Trattoria Zaza, Florence
Why: Great food, great service, trendy interior. Our server, Antonio, was helpful and patient with us as we decided what we would select. We had a wonderful, long, and relaxing meal, and everything was wonderful.

Emily in Fairfax, VA USA 07/22/2008

Best: McDonald's Pantheon
Why: cheap, way higher quality than in the US, and a pretty good view. not Italian, but sometimes you don't want Italian. Limited menu at this location.

Anna Lee in Birmingham, AL USA 07/22/2008

Best: Ristorante Enoteca Le Vie Del Gusto - Siena
Why: Not in the guide book but it should be.Address is: Via dei Fusari, 9. It is near the Duomo. Carlo and Carlos are wonderful people. The food is fantastic; the service is wonderful and the prices are quite reasonable. Highly recommended.

Mary in Arlington Hts., IL USA 07/16/2008

Best: Miscellanea - Rome, Pantheon Area
Why: What a great little spot! Tremendous value, excellent food, and the service was very good. I think Mikki is the head waiter's name and this guy was a real gem; greeted us like locals on our second visit. Our mistake was not eating here every night we were in Rome.

Al Q in San Diego, CA USA 07/15/2008

Best: Miky -Monterosso al Mare
Why: Excellent food and service!

Michelle Whorley in Kirkland, WA USA 07/14/2008

Best: La Tonnerella/ Gigino pizzeria - Sorrento
Why: La Tonnerella - View from terrace heavenly, food fabulous - atmosphere incredible. The best food and value while in Italy. Restorante Pizzeria de Gigino - best pizzas on trip and salads great - good value. Settimo Cielo staff was pushing Aurora Pizzeria - family owned - and not too thrilled that i recommended Gigino's to large American group staying there as well but it was the best. Davide gelato - delicious!

Tony Caruso in Alpharetta , GA USA 07/12/2008

Best: Trattoria da Emidia, Sorrento
Why: Fabulous fresh fish, reasonable prices, good service, and a beautiful location. Everyone (including our two kids) was very satisfied.

Worst: Pizzeria Giardiniello, Sorrento
Why: Prices were reasonable, but the food was mixed (stone-cold potatoes with roast chicken, though the pizza was all right). But the service was horrible. I waited 30 minutes to get the bill, after asking four times. For the first time in my life I wondered if anyone would notice if we just left. In the end, they couldn't make change and overcharged me to cover the difference. If I hadn't been so exhausted I would have complained.

Gretchen Starr LeBeau in Lexington, KY USA 07/07/2008

Best: I Delfinos
Why: Rapid and food with good taste.

Daniel in Calexico, Ca USA 07/04/2008

Best: Antica Osteria Il Baretto (Vernazza)
Why: Great food at a great price. While not on the harbor, still a great location for people-watching. Try the trofie al pesto.

Worst: Ristorante Incadase da Piva (Vernazza)
Why: The food was awful--we had the mixed fried seafood and decided not to order anything else. The quality was just not there.

Sandy in San Bruno, CA USA 07/02/2008

Best: Trattoria Marione, Florence
Why: I had this meat dish, after getting a recommendation from the couple seated next to me. They are from England and told me they come to this restaurant every time they come to Florence. I believe it was 14 euro, but it was spectacular. It was cuts of rare steak. The lunch just blew me away. I ended up going to this restaurant 3x during my 3 nights in Florence

Worst: Le Naumachie, Rome
Why: This is down the street from Arena Guest House, near the Colosseum. I went here twice. The first night was no problem for me. But the 2nd night. Full disclosure: I'm a really patient person and have never in my life complained to a server or anyone about my food or how the service was. Usually they would come to my table at the appropriate time or the food was reasonable. So I never had a reason to cause a fuss. But this night sucked. They seated me at the end of the middle of the restaurant. So when people would try to wind their way through, some might accidentally bump my table. This was kind of a busy night, so I couldn't really move anywhere else. Second, my dinner came before my bread and beer. Not sure how that happened. But after a long day, it woulda been nice to sit with my beer and wait for the food to come. Then, after I was done with my dinner and beer, no one came to clear my table for 15 minutes. I looked at my watch many times, so it was 15 minutes. Then when the guy came and cleared everything, I asked for the check. I think 13 minutes later, I decided I had enough of waiting. The guy never came back so I walked up to the lady at the register. My check was there this whole time. I don't know what the difference was the previous night and this night. But this was definitely the worst restaurant experience I've ever had in my 31 years.

Anthony in Irvine, CA USA 06/28/2008

Best: Trattoria la Torre, Siena
Why: We were feeling frustrated by the Italian restaurant system, which seemed to be mediocre, warmed up meals at high prices. We tried this Trattoria on our last night in Siena. They had fresh food! and soup!. The atmosphere, everything was worth the money.

Andrew Crowley in Woodlyn, PA USA 06/23/2008

Best: too many to list
Why: over the 3 weeks we tried many of the restaurants in your book and overall they were all very good, once we figured out that dinner is not ordered by the plate but by the course.

Mark Hurworth in Courtenay, BC Canada 06/23/2008

Best: RRistorante at Hotel Olivedo and Ristorante Il Caminetto
Why: For Ristorante you call to make a reservation and they come down the hill to pick you up and take you to the restaurant. It is very small and all the food is cooked to order. Some of the very best food we had in all of Italy.

Michael de la Pena in Shingle Springs, CA USA 06/22/2008

Best: Ristorante Belvedere and Miky
Why: Both restaurants had very good food. Were in excellent locations by the water abd the service was outstanding.

Michael de la Pena in Shingle Springs, Ca USA 06/22/2008

Best: Ristorante alla Rampa
Why: We really enjoyed the buffet one night and went back on a 2nd night to sample other fare. The food was well prepared and waiters were good without hanging over you!

Jolien Mierke in Alexandria, VA USA 06/21/2008

Best: Osteria da Mario
Why: Sat outside, great service, inexpensive, very comfortable.

katherine in cincinnati, oh USA 06/19/2008

Worst: Ristorante la Carbonara
Why: Ristorante la Carbonara in Rome in Campo de' Fiori, left quite a bit to be desired. The people next to us also had Rick's book. We both agreed, this was his only "miss". The food was not good, to say the least, and yes, it was completely crowded with tourists.

Jessica in Baldwin, WI USA 06/17/2008

Best: La Buca, Pisa
Why: despite minimal write up we had an excellent meal at a reasonable price

Chet Brewer in Severna Park, MD USA 06/16/2008

Best: Tratoria S. Giacomo, Bellagio
Why: Good food at a modest price.

Worst: Ristoranto Barchetta, Bellagio
Why: When I complained that the house wine (a red) was almost 'frozen,' the waiter yelled at us for not knowing the difference between good and bad wine. (Incidentally, I have a cellar of 700 bottles!). We walked out!

Alfonso Damico in Iowa City, IA USA 06/10/2008

Worst:
Why:

Valerie Doane in Clifton Park, NY USA 06/10/2008

Best: Restaurante Bilicus, Bellagio
Why: Cordial, classy staff; lovely alfresco setting; the lake fish entree was best fish dinner I have ever had; prices were routine.

Richard Harned in Kenmore, NY USA 06/10/2008

Best: Venice:Trattoria Pizzeria Nono Risorto
Why: Reasonable prices, friendly servers

Worst: Siena: Trattoria la Torre
Why: felt pressured into ordering more than just the pasta. No printed menu offered, told verbally what was on menu and what to order: E.g.: fresh asparagus €5 for 8 spears.

W. Wong in San Francisco, CA USA 06/08/2008

Best: Trattoria Nella in Florence
Why: This restaurant had some of the best food we had in Rome and Italy, at very reasonable prices especially in Florence. We went there several times. The pitchers of Chianti are an especially good value there. We interacted with the father and sons, all of whom took great pride in what they were doing, and for good reason.

Worst: None.
Why: none.

Russ Lorber in Westminster, MD USA 06/07/2008

Best: Hotel Olivedo Varenna

Ron and Linda Schroeder in Portland, OR USA 06/06/2008

Best: Ciak in Monterosso, Cinque Terre
Why: forgot to write location on my reveiw. Need a reservation for this awesome restaurant.

Holly Carpino in Dana Point, ca USA 06/04/2008

Best: Ciak
Why: Need a reservation!!! Great big terracota pans served up yummy risotto- pick your seafood-they have it all. Great service and friendly locals. Tip- the terracota pan dishes are min. of 2- if your neighbors seated next to you are friendly-you or your waiter may suggest sharing. My husband had the pesto gnocci (awesome) as i wanted the rissoto w/ shrimp and our waiter sat us next to some italian newlyweds who graciously shared which sparking 2 hours of conversation. A lovely evening. sit outside on main covered patio for ambiance, people watching and feel like you are part of an event.

Holly Carpino in Dana Point, Ca USA 06/04/2008

Best: La Grotta Restaurant in Riomaggiore Cinque Terre
Why: A great little restaurant at the bottom of the main street. Lovely local food - fresh and tasty. Inexpensive and a cosy atmosphere.

Sharon Hodgkins in Sheffield, UK 06/04/2008

Best: Doner Kabob
Why: (I know this sounds strange .. but) these guys were warm and friendly, and put together some amazing sandwiches for us when we had just arrived in Verona, everything else was closing or too far away, and we were famished and tired from the trip. This place was a Godsend.

Mark Henderson in Dana Point, CA USA 05/29/2008

Best: Ristorante Medioevo in Assisi
Why: Our meal was outstanding - everything was prepared deliciously. This was probably the best meal we had in all of our 14 days in Italy.

Marge Sykes in Elbridge, NY United States 05/24/2008

Best: La Vista, Varenna
Why: Super-amazing lake views, good food, good value with prix fixe menu. Only strange thing was that all the diners were Americans!

Kelly in Milwaukee, WI USA 05/19/2008

Best: Ristorante Belforte - Vernazza
Why: We followed Rick's suggestion and reserved a table with a view at this little restaurant, and had a wonderful meal overlooking the setting sun over the sea - with dolphins visible in the waves offshore! The seafood was delicious - the table next to us ordered an entire fish grilled with potatoes and tomatoes which the chef skillfully deboned and served at the table for them - it looked magnificent.

Susan in Boston, MA USA 05/14/2008

Best: Ristorante Guidoriccio, in Siena
Why: Quiet, cozy, wonderful service, excellent food. As a woman dining alone, the owner looked after me very well, without fussing over me. Set me at a lovely table and allowed me a leisurely dinner with my book and my memories. Terrific food, good wine, and gracious service.

Rhonda Younker in Bellevue , WA USA 05/13/2008

Best: Pizzeria Trianon - page 669
Why: The wood-fired pizzas are amazingly delicious - best pizza we ever had.

Worst: Ristorante Delfino - page 699
Why: Risotto and Noodles were overcooked. Everything was overpriced. I was impressed however at the end when they took my risotto dish off the bill because I told them I didn't like the way it was overcooked. Location is very nice.

Scott in Renton, WA USA 05/12/2008

Best: Hostaria Romana in Rome (Via del Boccaccio 1)

Why: They have my very favorite panini in the world and they are economical as well.

Jennifer Barnhill in San Diego, CA USA 05/06/2008

Best: Self Service Ristorante Leonardo
Why: Exactly as it was explained: fast, cheap air-conditioned, handy and good.

Robin Rodrigues in Modesto , CA USA 04/30/2008

Best: Osteria al Portego, Venice; Osteria Enoteca ai Rusteghi, Venice; Grom, Florence,
Why: all felt like places that you were lucky to find as a tourist. I felt welcomed without feeling like I was expected, got to meet and learn how to behave from locals, and, most importantly, the food was phenomenal and fairly priced.

Hillary Smith in Denver, CO USA 04/25/2008

Best: I Fratellini, on the Via dei Cimatori, in Florence
Why: Fantastic sandwichs--we went back twice!

Worst: ALL the restaurants in Venice we ate at! (3)
Why: We didn't use the book--BIG mistake!

Jennifer Kyle Herd in Oak Hill, , VA USA 04/21/2008

Best: Gelateria Carrozze
Why: I mentioned your book, and the owner smiled like I had never seen before. He was so proud to be searched out. And, it was definitely worth it. I tried the Ferrero Rocher...WOW!!!!

Sheryll Matheson in Coquitlam, BC Canada 04/21/2008

Best: Trattoria la Burrasca-Florence

Cynthia Roo in Chula Vista, CA USA 04/16/2008

Best: Birreria Forst on "Calle de Rasse" in Venice
Why: Great sandwiches and good prices. Just as it was described in the book. We really enjoyed it.

Doug in Philadelphia, PA USA 04/16/2008

Best: Trattoria Mario in Florence
Why: With the open seating, we were seated with an older American man who had retired to Florence. He was excited to share his knowledge of Florence with us. Being seated with him made for one of our best meals - not to mention that the food was delicious!

Christy in Drexel Hill, PA USA 04/16/2008

Best: Trattoria La Grotta in Cortona
Why: Food was fabulous. Staff was friendly, fun and competent. Prices were quite reasonable. Best meal of the trip

Worst: Trattoria La Cellina, Siena
Why: To be fair - this was not in the 2008 edition. But they had a Rick Steves review on the door and so we ate there. I guess we should have realized that if it was not in the 2008 edition, there was a reason. Food was bad and it was almost twice the cost of any other dinner we had on the trip. We learned the hard way that what is not in the book (esp. if it had been in the book) is as important as any listing.

Mimi Satter in Syracuse , NY USA 04/13/2008

Best: Trattoria Chiribiri in San Gimignano
Why: I am a VERY picky eater! I decided to change my ways and leave my comfort zone. You know what they say, "when in rome, do as the romans!!" I tried Lasagnette with Chingale ragu, with the house white wine. I also got Risotto with aromatic herbs. It was all SO good and so well priced!! A true highlight!!!

Brian Freund in keego harbor, MI USA 04/11/2008

Best: il nido in sorrento
Why: great food and prices and view

Worst: miky in monterosso
Why: though the owner's are friendly, the portions are very small and it is over priced.

bruce lahr in sauk rapids, mi USA 04/03/2008

Best: Taverna San Giuseppe in Siena
Why: Very welcoming and hospitable. Great food. Great atmosphere. Lovely all around.

Scott Hovey in Durham, NC USA 03/31/2008

Best: Osteria Romana, Rome
Why: Great food. My wife called it the best pasta she's ever had in her life. The waiter looks like a thin Mel Brooks, and pretty much acts like that too. The whole experience was lots of fun. It was the only place in Rome we went to twice in six nights.

Mark in Madison, WI USA 03/28/2008

Best: Miky's in Monterosso, Cinque Terre
Why: Great food, especially dough covered entree that was lit with a flame, plus great wine. Lovely place to eat and celebrate my 50th birthday!

Sue Laabs in Northville, MI USA 03/23/2008

Best: Tazza d'Oro Casa de Caffe- Pantheon, Rome
Why: Loved being in the heart of Rome and taking it in with the locals. The orange juice is good here too (fresh squeezed).

Worst: Chat Qui Rit, St. Mark's Venice
Why: Nothing like the book described. The food was cold and barely microwaved warm. The lasagne was particularly bad. The nickel and dime you for things like butter, etc. It wasn't really a very big cost saver but I do realize Venice is pricey. We also had capreze salad with sour (spoiled) cheese. Unappetizing, unappealing, cold food. Your book does such a good job with recommendations I just wanted to let you know that this spot has slid to the bottom!

Carolyn Sleeper in Phoenix, AZ USA 03/22/2008

Best: Ristorante Guidoriccio in Siena AND 13 Gobbi in Florence
Why: Ercole in Siena was friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The authentic Sienese food was a delight, and the ambience was both historical and warming, at the same time. We had Christmas Eve dinner at 13 Gobbi in Firenze: fun, generous, and the highest quality!

Worst: Numerous Venetian Restaurants - Venice
Why: Had a hard time, even with the guidebook, finding a dinner we really enjoyed here...but the rest of this remarkable city made up for it!

John Novick in Chicago, IL USA 03/21/2008

Best: Chat Qui Rit Venice
Why: High quality food despite cafeteria self service dining. Awesome, perfect place for the kids, and mom and dad went away stuffed and happy.

Worst: La Conchiglia Venice
Why: Totally touristy, high prices, food just okay. They didn't even have a house wine!

Kelly in Milwaukee, WI USA 03/13/2008

Best: Trattoria Papei - Siena Piazza Del Mercato
Why: Not on your list but it should be. We had a wonderful lunch with our friends; good service and great pasta and chianti with reasonable prices. Staff even gave us a complimentary decanter of dessert wine. One of our best lunches in two weeks in Italy.

Mark in Indianapolis, IN USA 03/06/2008

Best: Trattoria Chiribiri - San Gimignano
Why: We loved this so much for dinner we went back for lunch. Great, fun staff, good service, great food and the zuppa inglese for dessert was a highlight.

Worst: Cantinetta dei Verrazzano - Firenze
Why: The recommended sampler plate of mini focaccia sandwiches was terrible - one had peas, one had what tasted like canned mushroom and the other has one very thin slice of meat. Service was marginal at best. By far our worst meal in all of Italy.

Mark Obergfell in Indianapolis, IN USA 03/06/2008

Best: Il Pirate in Vernazza
Why: the twin brothers are a hoot! Great food!!!

DELIA EPIE in CLOVIS, CA USA 02/12/2008

Best: Mama Gina's, Florence, Italy
Why: The food and the service top notch! Loved the location away from the center of Florence but still close enough for an evening stroll afterwards.

Tara Dickie in Warwick, Bermuda 01/26/2008

Best: Cavillino D'Oro in Castelrotto / Kastelruth
Why: We did not expect much, just acceptable touristy hotel food. We ended up having the best grilled shrimp and beef filet we have ever had in Europe (and we've lived here 2.5 years) The kids even liked their food. It has a limited daily menu but everything was top quality. We visited twice in 4 days. Service was also excellent. We highly recommend.

B Ergeron in Brussels, BE 01/06/2008

Best: restaurant pizzeria in todi
Why: all the locals were there no english spoken best local food i'v ever tasted

Worst: Hilton Garden Hotel Restaurant, Rome
Why: One of our partners was ill and we had to stay near the airport on the last night. They served terrible american-style italian food.

Diana Cipro in so. Dennis, MA USA 01/05/2008

Best: Restaurant next to Romantica Pucci's in Bagnareggio
Why: Food was excellent and prices very good and Service great too!

JOhn USA 01/05/2008

Best: Ermino - Assisi
Why: Delicious vino rosso della casa (thanks for recommending it) ... Frederico was delighted to see our copy of Rick Steves' Italy 2008 on our table and to read the great review of his ristorante!

Laurette Benton in Raleigh, NC USA 12/23/2007

Amy in Pittsburgh, PA USA 12/20/2007

Best: Miscellanea roma
Why: Great location near the Pantheon.Helpful staff with great pasta specials. We went back the next day also.

John Theune in Sheboygan, Wi USA 12/05/2007

Worst: Est, Est, Est in Rome
Why: very slow, absentee service, server had an attitude, made fun of us trying to order in Italian, then announced that we owed him a tip at end of meal--even tho service was awful. Do not recommend this restaurant again!

Rebecca Portera in West Point, MS USA 12/03/2007

Best: Cafe Za Za - Florence
Why: Fantastic food of a much higher caliber than the usual Italian fare. Crowded lines and hip crowd, great nightscene and truly outstanding menu and food. Would be a fave of mine if it were here in the US - only one of 2-3 restaurants that were the best we had in Italy the whole three weeks.

Taya Rotering in Minneapolis, MN USA 11/30/2007

Best: Albergo Milano's La Vista
Why: Interesting combination of ingredients

Jill Grigsby in Claremont, CA USA 11/23/2007

Worst: La Tana dell'Arte ristorante in Naples
Why: The service was extremely slow (15 minutes to take our order and there was only one other table occupied)and the three waiters that came to our table were all rude and acted like we were interrupting their day. There were no "Buona sera," "ciao," "salve," nothing but cold rudeness. They also padded the bill--We were charged for our pizza and water and the 3 euro coperto, which we expected, but then they also added a 15% gratuity. We complained about the service and said we did not want to pay the gratuity, but the manager said, "sorry." but she could not do anything about the charge. This place may have been good at one time, but it is terrible now.

Barry DeVine in Eugene, OR USA 11/14/2007

Best: both osteria San Patrizio in Orvieto and Trattoria Chiribiri in San Gimignano were excellent.
Why: Service was good in Orvieto and the meals were delicious in both places.

Margaret Volpe in Clifton, VA USA 11/13/2007

Worst: Most
Why: We recommend downplaying how wonderful Italian food is. We were not impressed. It was a rare meal that even came close to okay (we ate at mostly recommended places). We kept scratching our heads wondering why the hype. By the time many of the places added the coperto and a 12% service charge AND the exchange rate between the Euro and U.S. dollar and delivered mediocre fair, we couldn't find anything to get excited about. Italy, its history art and people - that's another story. We'll always treasure the experienced we had, just not gastronomical...

Jack Bender in Zeeland, MI USA 11/12/2007

Worst: Osteria Naranzaria - Venice
Why: Although it is is highly recommended by Rick Steves, we just didn't feel the love when we were there. We sat outside along the canal and were completely ignored by the waiter, who was busy talking to some friends. We finally got a glass of wine each but then decided to leave and look for a place that might appreciate our business.

John in Newtown Square, PA USA 11/11/2007

Worst: Trattoria Angiolino, Florence
Why: The two dishes we ordered were both very salty.

ping wang in Lausanne, Switzerland 11/11/2007

Best: Osteria al Mascaron - Venice
Why: The food and wine was great as was the atmosphere. Our waiter took very good care of us. Although this has nothing to do with the restaurant, the walk from the hotel, down the narrow streets of Venice, looking for the restaurant added to the experience.

John in Newtown Square, PA USA 11/11/2007

Best: Antica Ostaria Ruga Rialto - Venice
Why: This is a Rick Steves recommended eatery but I didn't discover that until after I had eaten there. Ruga is a small bar full of locals. We ate bar snacks (octopus, baccala, etc.) which cost .5 to 1. Euro each, a few pieces of bread and had a couple glasses of wine. The bill came to 11 Euro. This place has good food and drink, is inexpensive and has an energy that makes it a great place to hang.

John in Newtown Square, PA USA 11/11/2007

Best: Trattoria Il Porticciolo, Manarola
Why: Friendly service, great pasta. One of the two best meals we had on this trip. They even gave us complimentary biscotti and dessert wine.

Linda Hornbeck in Torrance, CA USA 11/03/2007

Best: I Fratellini in Florence, Italy
Why: The sandwiches were great and they were served with a small glass of wine--perfect for lunch and all for 4 euro a person! The "little brothers" were also friendly and nice.

Jessie in Chicago, IL USA 11/03/2007

Best: we loved many: Ristorante Greppia in Verona
Why: lovely decor, excellent service, typical food ''bollito misto'', mostly Italian clients and Rick Steves' readers, excellent list of wines`another favorite, was Caffe Pedrocchi, in Vicenza! what a lovely place: we felt like royalty!

Best: Da Bepi in Venice
Why: Great food, excellent service.

Best: El Pirato in Vernazza
Why: well prepared food, good service. The brothers are a kick but it is too bad it is all Americans. Go in the mornings to see the locals, it is the hangout place for breakfast.

Chere Weiss in Kelso, WA USA 10/29/2007

Best: Trattoria da Leo, Lucca
Why: The combination of good food, wonderful ambiance, and low price made Leo the winner in a close race. We also ate at Osteria Baralla in Lucca and Osteria La Zucca in Venice, and both were excellent.

Worst: NA
Why: We didn't really have a bad meal in Italy.

Murray Duke in Ottawa, ON Canada 10/26/2007

Worst: Trattoria "da Giorgio"
Why: What an expensive mistake. We dined at this romantic local on October 12, 2007. We made reservations and were seated promptly. We ordered a bottle of wine and decided to share a pasta dish and a second course. The bill came to 104.00 Euros. The second course we chose was a mixed grill seafood platter for 26 Euros which when it arrived 45 minutes later included two shrimp, one fillet and one small sea bass. We were charged for two second courses. We were asked if we wanted fries, salad or vegetables with our second course and were charged 8 additiional euros. Everthing was plus 12% tip. It took 20 minutes to get a surly waiter. We were at table number 1 which is the furthest away on the canal but is where the servers take their smoke breaks every 5 minutes. It was an expensive mistake and our only bad experience in our entire two-week stay in Italy. When we commented on our bad experience to our hotel Staff, Hotel Riva, they said that it had gotten really bad reviews lately by many other guests. Stay away!

Best: Marina Piccola
Why: view, menu (great fresh seafood) wind selection. Price

Frank Washburn in Orogon City, OR USA 10/22/2007

Worst: Taverna dei Consoli, Assisi
Why: The waiters were unusually curt and rude. My two teen-aged daughers, who have been in Italy for 10 weeks studying Italian, ordered in Italian. The young waiter replied rudely to them saying WHAT are you saying? It was very rude and discouraging to them. The food was not spectacular and the service was rude. I would not recommend because it made for an uncomfortable and unpleasant dining experience.

Wanda Thompson in Newton, NC USA 10/21/2007

Best: Il Pirata delle Cinque Terre
Why: Great food and atmosphere. The hot chocolate and cafe latte were excellent. The lunch menu had a good variety of items. The food was good. Reasonably priced food.

Worst: Ristorante Incadase da Piva
Why: The food was okay and overpriced. The atmosphere is a little noisy and busy from hikers coming off the Cinque hiking path. While the tegame alla Vernazza was good, it was not a good value compared to other meals enjoyed while in Italy.

A. Overen in Montgomery, Al USA 10/19/2007

Best: Trattoria Nell; Florence
Why: A little tiny restaurant with a hugh appeal. The owner was wonderfully ebullient and welcoming. The antipasto was enormous. My husband had the minestrone soup which was beyond words good and I had the Tuscan soup which was equally wonderful. The soups were so filling that having an appitizer was a waste. House wine was terrific.I recommend this restaurant highly.

L M Stewman TX USA 10/19/2007

Worst: Il Pirata in Vernazza
Why: I think fame has gone to Il Pirata's head. I caught a nasty cold and asked my husband to get some scrambled eggs from the cafe you mentioned in the book. He happened to walk by Il Pirata and the manager tried beckoning him to come in for a pastry. My husband, a very gentle-speaking person, explained my situation and that he was going to get scrambled eggs take-out, the Il Pirata manager became surly and sarcastically retorted he would build a McDonald's for us. Then he went on to rant about Americans wanting American food.

Cindy Baquiran in Centreville, VA USA 10/09/2007

Best: Vivaldi Gelato-Florence
Why: This has to be the best gelato in Italy. We went back at least 2 times a day and loved all the variety and prices were right too! We now send all friends to Vivaldi when they travel to Florence!

Gina in San Jose, CA USA 10/09/2007

Best: Hotel Olivedo/Il Modo cafe
Why: Both had great meals in beautiful surroundings. Il Modo is right on the lakeside walkway with a good selection of pastas, sandwiches, pizzas.

John & Susan in St Petersburg, FL USA 10/08/2007

Best: Osteria Mananan, Corniglia, Cinque Terre
Why: We were treated to one of our very best lunches and the friendly service of the owner. We had mixed seafood -- including whole squids, mussels, clams over pasta. Plenty for two to share. Delicious! Seating is indoors, but while there it actually rained for about a half hour -- the only time during our two weeks!

Tandy VA USA 10/02/2007

Best: Il Pirata, Vernazza, Cinque Terre
Why: This restaurant was outstanding -- we ate a dinner here on our last night in CT. The brothers have superb recommendations and are as friendly as if you were long-lost cousins! We had stuffed mussels, eggplant parmigiana, and lasagna bolognese as well as the most incredible desserts.

Tandy USA 10/02/2007

Best: Self Service Ristorante Leonardo--Florence
Why: Because we'd had a big-Italian-city bad meal the night before--the house wine was from a box!! But Luciano's food was hot, fast, lots of it, reasonably priced, great choices and my Italian-food-experienced husband deemed it wonderful. Luciano enthusiastically correct my French Oui to an Italian Si with a smile. I loved it!

Diane Flindt in Sugar Land, TX USA 09/30/2007

Best: Flann O'Brien Irish Pub, Ristorane da Giovanni
Why: In all honesty we did not have a bad meal in all of Italy. However when we got to Rome I was ready for a nice steak. I found it a Flann O'Brien's.

Service and atmosphere was excellent at Ristorane da Giovanni. Good, basic Italian food served quickly and zestfully.

Furnancefighter in Philadelphia, PA USA 09/29/2007

Best: Restorante Guidoriccio-Siena
Why: The food and service was excellent.

Worst: Agnello Pizzeria, Milan
Why: Based on our observation, the seating is done based on how well dressed you are. If one is in business-like attire, one is seated in the front main area. Everyone else is seated in the back eating area or in the basement. We were wearing jeans and collared shirts. Had we known this pizzeria had a dress code, we would've dressed accordingly. The atmosphere was more like a fine restaurant but the food, wine and set up were more like a pizzeria. The attitude sure was tacky, too.

Tony Ramirez in Huntington Beach, CA USA 09/29/2007

Best: Trattoria Chiribiri in San Gimignano
Why: We actually ate here two nights it was such a delightful experience! Good food, remarkably inexpensive, quick service. We met several other delightful couples from around the world in the cozy dining area. Fantastic!

Cory in Dallas, TX USA 09/29/2007

Best: Il Pirate Cafe in Vernazza Cinque Terra
Why: Great food and the nicest people we met in Italy. It seemed like most patrons were asking to have their picture taken with the owners before leaving. No View- who cares- you must stop in here!

Best: Pizzeria Aurora - Sorrento

Best: Grom Gelato, Florence
Why: My niece is a culinary student in Florence and as part of her training she has gotten a tour of the best of the best places Florence has to offer. Grom (www.grom.it) was hands down the best gelato I have ever had anywhere, much less anywhere in Italy. The man who owns it is a sweetie and cares so much about his product being perfect. The Slow Food folks mention him on their list of best foods in Italy. It is a treat, totally worth experiencing and very close to sights--just a few blocks from the Duomo...YUM!

Patti Pitcher in Snoqualmie, Wa USA 09/25/2007

Best: New: Dantes, Beccofino, La Galleria
Why: Dante Trattoria & Pizzeria, www.trattoria-dante.com, Piazza Nazario Sauro, 12r (Oltrano, by Ponte Carraia), good food, service, prices, & best tiramisu. Beccofino (Beccofino.com), Piazza Degli Scarlatti 1r, on the Arno between Pt. Carraia and Pt. S.Trinita: splurge--expensive, exquisite food, wonderful service. La Galleria, www.ristorantelagalleria.it, on Via Guicciardini 48r. authentic, cheap, delicious, recommended by locals (ribolitta & freshly made chocolate torte wonderful).

Worst: Santo Spirito Square area
Why: None of the places recommended in the S.Spirito Square area looked particularly appetizing or reasonable. Depressing and worn. We found the above new places reasonable, friendly, & had good food. The first two in S.Spirito area, LaGalleria near Pitti Palace.

Best: Gelateria Grom
Why: This place had the best gelato we tried, and we tried a lot of places during our trip! The gelato is all natural and delicious...we especially liked the Mint, Tiramisu, and their own flavor: Creme de Grom. There are other locations in smaller cities throughout Italy, and one location in New York City. Check their website: http://www.grom.it/

Best: trattoria alla rivetta (venice)
Why: Venice is incredibly touristy, more so than I expected, and the excessive tourism detracts from the experience. I was very concerned that I wouldn't be able to get a decent meal. This trattoria was exactly as Rick described -- full of gondoliers having lunch and delicious food. It was very authentic italian and just good basic food. Had the vegetarian antipasti (variety of grilled and marinated veg) and the fritti misti (a lightly fried delicious mixture of incredibly fresh seafood)

Tiffany Mura in Boston, MA USA 09/18/2007

Worst: Bar Davi, Monterosso, Cinque Terre
Why: This restaurant should be taken out of your book. It definitely isn't up to par with the rest of your recommendations. Overpriced for simple breakfast food and mediocre at best.

Best: Trattoria Al Pozzo Etrusco d"Aronne
Why: Absolutely fantastic food, gourmet Italian, best on our trip, and the waiter, Christian, was very kind.

Best: Taverna La Tellina in Siena
Why: Wonderful five course meal in this tiny trattoria. Lemoncello was complimentary and nice way to finish the meal.

Nancy in Atlanta, USA 09/06/2007

Best: Gianni Franzi in Vernazza, CT
Why: As we ate a wonderful dinner alfresco, in the harbor piazza, a young American girl wearing rolled up blue jeans and ponytail, walked into the arched hallway behind us and began to sing, "O Mio Babino Caro" in a tone-perfect voice, her hands folded opera style. Even the friendly waiters paused to listen with smiling faces. Twenty years ago, I heard this song as the theme from "A Room with a View" and knew in my heart I would travel to Italy someday. This was my first visit to Italy. I will remember this moment always.

Worst: None.
Why: We selected nearly every ristorante or trattoria from this guidebook, and never had a bad meal. We stuffed ourselves on pasta, pizza, pesto, seafood, crostini, bruschetta, insalate caprese, bread & oil, and fabulous local vino all the way from Bellagio to Paestum. Thank you for so many fabulous recommendations.

Best: Tratorria di Bepi in Venice

Abigail Navarro in Belfair, WA USA 08/22/2007

Best: Ristorante O'Parrucchiano (not on your list)
Why: This restaurant is just two doors down from the Casa Astarita. The third level is in a garden, with lemon trees overhead and plants everywhere! Food was excellent and reasonable, service great!

Sharon & Leo Marty in Olympia, WA USA 08/21/2007

Best: caffe dello studente in Rome
Why: Gave us lots of free "extras" very nice to kids, great food to be so near the forum. Great find for us, we will return!

Worst: hostaria dei bastioni near Vatican
Why: Worst meal and by far worst service we had in Rome. The food was bland and not a value at all. The owner ignored us completely when the tour group came in. We had to ask for check over 4 times and when we finally got it, it was with an attitude. Not worth a mention in your guide book, which usually was dead on with recommendations.

anne ozmer in atlanta, ga USA 08/09/2007

Worst: Osteria la Chiacchera, Siena
Why: This restaurant was horrible in every way except location. They were out of most items on the menu. The cooks were asian and did not speak good italian. The worst part was that both my wife and I got food poisoning from this restaurant. Do not eat here, there is a reason that it is so cheap.

Best: Trattoria Milanese, Milan

Best: 13 Gobbi in Florence

Rob DiCocco in Broomall, PA USA 07/24/2007

Best: Trattoria Nella at Florence, Antica Sarastica at Venice, picnic in Florence, Oasi Bar in Venice
Why: Great food. Great ambience. Good prices! At Oasi bar, there were 3 other groups in this really small eatery that had their Rick Steves' guidebook out! The guidebook created a little community. During our other travels, we have not relied so heavily on our guidebooks. This time, we were constantly looking at the book for advice.

Worst: None!
Why: All the places we ate at based on the book were exactly what was stated. Some were better than others, but that was written in the book. I am a vegetrian, so we left a few places because of their food options.

Anu and Velu Bala-Subramanian in Westford, Ma USA 07/23/2007

Best: Trattoria Sostanza-Troia
Why: Without a doubt, the best steak I've ever had in my life. The food was simple, elegant and flavorful, the house wine was an excellent Chianti (best I've ever tasted). We didn't make reservations, but just walked in after the first seating, and they happily put our names on the list for the second seating. Bonus: most of the other guests were not tourists.

Worst: Pizzeria Accademia Foscarini
Why: I was tempted to say we didn't have a bad meal anywhere in Italy, which is certainly true of our dinners. Our lunches were sometimes less impressive, especially in touristy areas, which of course, means most of Venice. This pizza place was not as quick as we'd hoped, and the food was mediocre and expensive, but the view was very lovely.

Stacey Burzumato in Savannah, GA USA 07/22/2007

Worst: Via Venti
Why: The prices were comparable to a nicer restaurant with a beautiful view. The waiter was rude and the food was average. This place is over-rated.

Patty Duffy in Eureka Springs, AR USA 07/20/2007

Best: Numerous
Why: Caminetto in Gitta: in the Varenna hills, they served the most incredible gorgonzola gnocchi -- to die for. Also terrific meats on a hot stone and on a sword -- true Alps experience.

Osteria Vineria i'Brincello: incredible meats in Florence.

Trattoria la Burrasca: incredible meats in Florence, as well as great pasta.

Il Pirata delle Cinque Terre: the Sicilian brothers were very entertaining. The meat lasagne and breakfast pastries were incredible.

Ombra della Sera (Volterra): Rick Steves was right about this being amazing pizza.

Michael Crichton in Ottawa, ON Canada 07/18/2007

Best: Trattoria alla Rivetta, Venice
Why: We stumbled onto this place and realized later it's in the guidebook. It had the best value for a meal we found at our price range in expensive Venice. Somewhat cramped, but lively and welcoming. Contrary to the guidebook, we didn't experience "second class" treatment as tourists.

Mark Adams in Gig Harbor, WA USA 07/17/2007

Best: Il Pirata
Why: Best for breakfast because of delicious pastries, but not the best for dinner.

Restaurant at top of heading towards Cornelgia was much better for dinner and the view was outstanding.

Best: The one described as Flinstone Chic in Florence
Why: Marcella from Casa Rabatti recommended it and we ate there twice. The food was good, the people very nice and the prices very reasonable.

John USA 07/14/2007

Best: Trattoria Nella
Why: Fabulous lasagne!

Worst: Flann O’Brien’s Irish Pub in East Rome; and Ristorante Bruno in Milan
Why: Flann: I ordered steak, and the meat was somewhat tough. However, when I told this to the manager, he was kind enough to bring me a chicken dish, at no extra charge. (The chicken was not very enjoyable.) Bruno: I ordered a chicken dish. What little chicken there was wasn’t very tasty.

Jeff Klein in Cypress, CA USA 07/13/2007

Best: Nello la Taverna-Siena
Why: Very helpful and fun staff, the night we were there everyone in the restaurant had your book on their table Pago Pago - Padua was very good also--the best salads

Jan Lapetino in Denver, CO USA 07/13/2007

Best: Greco Cafe, near the Spanish Steps, Rome
Why: GO TO THIS CAFE! It a little expensive, but worth every euro! After walking around Rome for 6 hours, this was the perfect place for a lite lunch. The service was wonderful, and they have a to die for Pistachio Cake. We live in Rochester NY, and we were trying to figure out how to buy a whole cake and take it home.

Worst: Trattoria Da Lucia, Trastevere & Gelateria Alla Scala, Trastevere
Why: We want to both of these restaurants, which were recommended in Rick's book, and can not understand why. The service was poor, and the food was just okay and they do not accept credit cards, which several other customers, including us searching for an ATM in order to pay our bill. We also sat outside, just to be seated in an alley across from the griffiti covered wall. Also the service and the quality of the Gelateria was not great. DO NOT SEEK this place out.

Margarita S. Rumsey in Rochester, NY USA 07/11/2007

Best: Pizzeria Le Palme, Corso Italia, Levanto, Cinque Terra
Why: We're not ones to join-in and share experiences on line, but had to let others know about this wonderful find. Le Palme is far more than your average pizzeria. Had only two nights in Levanto, intending to try a differnet restaurant on our second night, but couldn't pass up another fine meal at Le Palme. The freshest sea food, expertly prepared, very reasonable prices, enjoyed on their covered outdoor patio.

Best: Hotel Ristorante La Fortezza, Piazza Del Commune, Assisi
Why: Fine dining at lower cost. From start to finish, excellent regional cuisine (try the rabbit), fresh ingredients, intimate setting and absolutely fantastic wait staff ..... all at a price lower than other, finer Assisi restaurants

Dan and Jane in Castleton, NY USA 07/10/2007

Best: Il Pirata Dell Cinque Terre
Why: Amazing food! Out of all of the restaurants we ate at (and we did almost all of the ones in Vernazza, plus some in Manarola, Corniglia and Monterosso), by far Il Pirata had the best cuisine (they definitely beat out Gambero Rosso's); they were so kind to us, and since we continued to return, on our last night, they offered us a free bottle of wine, a fig liquor aperitif and dessert! They were entertaining, and they truly went out of their way to make us feel welcome and to supply the best service around! Dessert was exceptional and their pasta was phenomenal! Plus, they helped us find lodging when Tilde lost our room.

Stacy in DeLand, FL USA 07/06/2007

Best: Golden View Open Bar
Why: Wonderful location looking out on the Ponte Vecchio and the Arno River plus wonderful food. Also in Florence, we ate at Self-Service Ristorante Leonardo. Hard to find, but worth the search. In Rome, we ate at Cafeteria Nazionale, Perilli in Prati, and Ristorante alla Rampa. All were great and as described. In Venice we ate at Ristorante/ Pizzaria Accademia Foscarini, Casin dei Nobili, and Osteria Alberto. All were great and as described. We probably should have made reservations for Osteria Alberto. He had us write our name in the reservation book and come back in 30 minutes which worked out fine.

Worst: Brek in Venice
Why: We had eaten at Brek before in Padua and enjoyed the prices as well as the food. This came at the end of our trip and after nearly 3 weeks of wonderful Italian food so was quite a few steps down from what we had gotten used to in Italy.

Sandra Schwartz in Sumner, WA USA 07/05/2007

Best: Il Pino in San Gimignano, Tuscany
Why: Elegant, delicious, romantic

Worst: Ristorante la Carbonara, Campo Di Fiori, Rome
Why: The food was good, the service was bad. The view of the Campo di Fiori left me puzzled as to why Rick recommended it so highly. We had a 'fabulous' view of the back of a flower truck from our outdoor seats. Piazzo Navona was far more interesting.

Best: Ristorante Guidoriccio - Siena
Why: Via Giovanni Dupre 2, just off Il Campo.

The best service I've ever had in a restaurant in my life. Our waiter was the owner, Ercole. Over the two-and-a-half hour dinner, he regaled us with stories/history of the city; gave us complimentary cordials; and made my girlfriend and I feel like we were his long lost friends by the time we left. And the food was as unforgettable as the service.

Stephen Donovan in Worcester, MA USA 06/18/2007

Best: We ate at the restaurant in Venice that you said the gondoliers eat at a lot, cant remember the name
Why: Food was excellent, we had a little wait outside, the host brought little glasses of white wine for the guests who were waiting in line to enjoy while waiting. we sat next to a great couple from Dublin who go to Venice every year and always eat there--they love the food and the price (not too much) we had a nice conversation with them

Linda Nasser in Danbury, CT USA 06/18/2007

Best: Venice - La Boutique del Gelato
Why: Great value! 1 Euro for a small. Very, very tasty.

Worst: Venice - Osteria da Andrea
Why: Very touristy. The waiters were not friendly and pretty much asked everyone if they want the spagetti (which was only served for 2 at about 28 euro). The fish and vege plate is an appetizer for 15 euro.

Carol Fink in Tampa, Fl USA 06/17/2007

Best: Tratorria Il Porticciolo in Manarola, Cinque Terre
Why: Friendly staff and excellent food. We ate there every night. Fish dishes, pesto lasagna, insalata misto, and desserts were delicious. I think that overall this restaurant had the best food that we ate on our whole two-week Italy trip (in speaking with some other Americans at an adjacent table we were not alone in thinking this). At the end of each meal we were given a complimentary glass of the local dessert wine - sciacchetra. But do try the wonderful Cinque Terre DOC white wine with your meal.

Sandra in Santa Rosa, CA USA 06/17/2007

Best: Il Pirata---Galileo--- and Castel Girardi
Why: Il Pirata- As many of you have posted, this is a great little restaurant at the top of the town in Vernazza run by two irresistible brothers,Massimo and Gianlucca. Everyony who has read Rick Steves knows about their great breakfast pastries, but you must eat dinner there. Since the place is little make a reservation for dinner when you eat breakfast there. We ate there many times and relished each great meal and lively banter with the owners. We miss you guys. The Galileo is in Pisa and is a small restaurant on Via Silvestri 12. Wonderful food. Reasonable. We found the Castel Giraidi by accident. We were going by car to Cor tona and all the parking lots were full, so we kept on driving up the hill . You can eat inside or out . Great food .Very quiet for lunch. Open all the time. A good place to get away from the maddening crowds of the hilltowns.

Best: Vogele - Bolzano
Why: The food was EXCELLENT. Even the spinach was good and I hate spinach.

Tracey Allerton-Kuldanek in Edgewood, WA USA 06/12/2007

Best: Termini train station supermarket
Why: Downstairs at Termini is the best stocked supermarket in Rome, even had a USA/Europe plug at a reasonable price (2,65 euro) since I left mine in London. The also had an electronics wall full of charges and other computer/cell phone items. They had great prepared meals and fresh fruit in containers, and fresh breads. And even on a holiday day, June 2nd, they were open.

Lee in Long Beach, CA USA 06/12/2007

Best: Miky ( Montorosso)
Why: Owned by the same folks that own A Cu'du Gigante-this is even better than represented in the book. It was so good the first night we went back the second night, and we never repeat restaurants while traveling! The place was packed with locals and some visitors who found their way in. The service by the family ( kudos to Sara and her helper Francisco)was superb. The food was fresh, varied and interesting- we had never had fresh anchovies before - completely unlike the canned stuff. Very good value and excellent quality.

Worst: Airport Hilton ( Rome)
Why: This is not an RS recommendation, but we had the worst meal we had in 3 weeks while we were in Italy- where we had routinely had very good to excellent food. Location is the only reason for this place to exist- the rates are astronomical and the quality and price of food are terrible. A very early morning flight was the only reason we stayed here and it will be hard to justify staying at the Hilton when we return to Italy!

Steve and Linda Wilhoit in Anacortes, WA USA 05/27/2007

Worst: Ristorante Castello in Vernazza
Why: The waiter was very rude to us and other diners nearby, acting like any question was a huge impostion. He lit up a cigarette while standing at our table, and when we asked him to smoke further away, he tossed it over the rail onto the cliff below. I heard him giving misinformation to people at the next table. We also found, after the meal, that the place accepts cash only.

Best: Pizza House SI. RI. on the Via Del Corso, Rome
Why: This was one we ejoyed most. It should be on your list! Has the best food ever! It might not be recommended but we mostly ate when we were hungry and wherever we were at the time! We learned by trial and error the most expensive places and didn't return! lol We enjoyed all the Gelateria's!!

Best: Trattoria Mario
Why: It was an exciting experience trying to figure out what was going on and sharing elbow space with ravenous locals and stressed but friendly staff.

Worst: Trattoria Za Za
Why: While we were studying the menu, a young, male waiter began taunting us in Italian and laughing in our faces. He pointed at bistecca fiorentina and mouthed it condescendingly at me and turned away as his female boss kept laughing. Not sure if this was racially motivated (we are Asian-American and there seem to be a lot of Asian merchants as of late in Italy) but it was certainly the rudest experience of Italy.

Best: Il Pirata delle Cinque Terre in Vernazza
Why: I want to join with the others singing the praises of the Scilian twins. On our first night in Vernazza we ate mediocre food by the harbor. Once we discovered Il Pirata, we ate breakfast, lunch and dinner there. The food was so delicious and the brothers were so entertaining, how could we go anywhere else?

Best: Antica Osteria da Divo, Siena
Why: Great food and ambience. Not crowded in April.

Susan Matisoff in Berkeley, CA USA 05/09/2007

Best: La Lampara, Riomaggiore
Why: The spaghetii al cartoccio was to die for as was the Pane Cotta dessert. We couldn't bring ourselves to eat anywhere else!

Best: Open Bar in Florence
Why: Great location & food, very friendly, reasonable prices, interesting menu.

Beth in Northridge, CA USA 05/03/2007

Best: Venice: Trattoria Pizzeria Nono Risorto, Tratoria da Alberto, Tratoria del Remigio
Why: Book's maps frustrating. Food excellent in all three, prices a bargain at Pizzeria Nono Risorto. Tratoria del Remigio staff were brusque with non-Italians and it was most expensive. Staff most hospitable at da Alberto.

Best: Ristorante Delfino
Why: Huge portions, amazing view, and the best service of any restaurant we visited.

Robin W. in Richland, WA USA 04/21/2007

Best: Ristorante il Ritrovo- Florence
Why: I had the best home made pasta I ate in Italy in this small, moderately priced restaurant. Would never have found it if we had not had Rick Steve's guidebook.

Nancy in Madison, WI USA 04/17/2007

Best: Fiaschetteria, Rome
Why: Great character, yummy food. Not the typical touristy spot. It's tiny, so get there right when it opens to avoid a long wait. You might get to share a table with other diners, so they can squeeze everyone in. Kid friendly, too. Tried to go a second night on a Tues., but they were closed, maybe because it was Holy Week? Not sure if that's a regular thing since the sign on the door said they would be open. We also liked Cul De Sac on Piazza Pasquino in Rome-excellent food in unusual combos.

Angela in Sammamish, WA USA 04/15/2007

Best: Il Pirata delle Cinque Terre
Why: We loved this place, the food and the staff. The very best during our 4 days in Vernazza and previous 4 days in Stresa. The owners are really great and love to talk with customers. This is not just a great breakfast place - and it certainly is that and more. Our dinner was just superb. The mixed seafood starter and the eggplant parmagino were out of this world, but the ultimate was the dessert selection. This place can not be beat. Forget the harbor view, dinner is all about the food and the atmosphere. Four stars.

Worst: Trattoria del Capitano
Why: We received uninspired service, lousy food and misrepresentation of menu options. When we mentioned that the bread was stale, we got another plate of the same. We also received a second course different from what we ordered. This is NOT a place for good value. It is a poor substitute for a decent restaurant and does not belong in Rick's book. We love Rick and depend on his books. Please delete this place or warn your readers.

Best: Trattoria Nella, Florence
Why: Felt special, small, looked like dad and daughter doing most of the service. Good food, off the main drag down a couple of blocks from all the very busy streets.

Lawrence Judy in Evansville, IN USA 04/11/2007

Best: Trattoria La Grotta - Orvieto
Why: Great food, terrific host and reasonable prices. We broke our rule and ate there twice in a week.

Maggie Kilpatrick in Saint Paul, MN USA 04/10/2007

Best: Trattoria Icche C'e C'e - Florence
Why: Delicious! Even more than it was delicious, it seemed like the quintessential Tuscan eating experience - we had a full five courses and got to chat with several of the diners around us. As we were leaving, we noticed their replica of the Big Chicken, an Atlanta (Marietta) landmark, and found out that Gino comes to Marietta every few years - what a small world!

Worst: Antico Ristorante il Sasso di Dante, Florence
Why: Delicious primo piatti, but for secundo I had their Ossobucco, and my husband had eggplant parmesan, and we both felt like it tased like it was made with spaghetti sauce from a jar. Not well presented, and not really tasty at all.

Beth and Mike Nelson in Cumming, GA USA 04/09/2007

Best: Ristorante il Gabriello in Rome
Why: It has been our favorite restaraunt for a nice night out for the past 4 times we have been to Rome. This last trip was no exception. They have wonderful food, superb service, and Claudio is just charming. It is smart to make reservations or come early when they open (7pm).

Windy Hammond in Rodenbach, Germany 04/05/2007

Best: Trattoria Za-Za
Why: We normally seek favorites of the locals, so we weren't sure how this popular place would turn out, but the food was terrific and the capable and friendly service made it fun and memorable. It began to rain -- fairly hard -- while we sat under cover and next to a heat lamp outdoors, but we remained very comfortable and very much enjoyed ourselves.

Worst: Florence -- Osteria del Porcellino
Why: I am usually one who is fairly easy to please, but this meal was a low point. I ordered large shrimp (18 Euros) for my second course and got 5 mid-sized overcooked shrimp and nothing else. At first, it didn't look skimpy -- but all, or lack thereof, was revealed after I removed the shrimp heads and shells of those poor shrimp gracing my plate. Easy for the kitchen, disappointing for me. My companions' meals were okay but nothing special. The service was indifferent. The meal was a poor value compared to other restaurants in the book and others we found on our own. I would definitely drop this restaurant from the next edition and let them know why.

Margaret in Washington, DC USA 04/04/2007

Best: Trattoria Za Za Florence
Why: It was the most flavor we thought. However we also hate at several recommended restaurants - Venice, Rome and Vernazza and they were good as well.

Tangee Glass in Homer, GA USA 04/02/2007

Best: Antica Osteria Da Divo in Sienna and Tratttoria d'Aronne in Orvieto
Why: Food, wine and atmosphere in Da Divo was fantastic. At Trattoria d'Arrone the pasta was the best I've ever had and so reasonably priced.

Pam Dickinson USA 03/31/2007

Best: Via Venti in Monterosso; Il Pirata in Vernazza
Why: Dining at the Via Venti was a wonderful experience. We had the best dinner of our entire trip. It was seafood ravioli (ravioli stuffed with fresh seabass covered with a shrimp/calimari sauce)followed by hot chocolate canneloni. The dishes were freshly made and artfully presented by owner Ettore. Son Michele and girlfriend Ibaria were personable servers.

Il Pirata is memorable. The pastries are to die for, and the dinners were also delicious. The twin brother owners, Gianluca and Massimo, take pride in using the best ingredients and make the time at the restaurant fun with their interesting banter. We enjoyed the food and experiences so much we kept returning.

Worst: Restaurant Za Za
Why: This is overboard touristy. And the food was no good.

Ron Ritland MA USA 03/21/2007

Best: Trattoria Marione
Why: This little trattoria was on Via della Scala (I think) in Florence and the food was fantastic! We were really impressed with the pasta e fagioli (we don't plan to eat at Olive Garden ever again after this meal) and the ribollita. We enjoyed the second course - I had the roast chicken and potatoes, while my husband had the veal with salad and potatoes. Everything we ate before and after this restaurante was not even close to the great meal we had here. The service wasn't fantastic (not that many other places have great service anyway), but the food was more than worth it. We should have eaten here both days we were in Florence.

Worst: Restaurant in Lido
Why: I don't remember the name of the restaurant on Lido, but it was on the main street and we made the mistake of having the menu of the day. It included bread, pasta with ragu, and a beef fillet with potatoes. The pasta was mediocre, the beef was terrible, and the potatoes were French fries. We were seated in a very small area right next to the restrooms which I don't think had ever been cleaned. The food was terrible and the smell was even worse!

Melanie in West Haven, UT USA 03/19/2007

Best: Hostaria da Nerone
Why: Whilst in Rome last year, my husband and I ate at Hostaria da Nerone, despite the very terse and unflattering review you gave this establishment. We found Hostaria da Nerone to be a delightful place and hastened back there last month upon our return to Rome. We like to dine at restaurants favored by locals - and Nerone is such a place. Travelers seem to find it pleasing also. The De Santis family have owned and operated Hostaria da Nerone for over 40 years and take great pride in what they prepare and serve. The menu contains a wealth of classic Roman cuisine, with perhaps a touch of Abruzzi - from whence this family came. Basic, wholesome fare. There is also a superb buffet if you prefer to browse. A nice selection of wines. And, of course, one must mention Teo - cameriere par excellence, for whom nothing is too much trouble if it pleases the diner. With its sunny yellow tablecloths and charming atmosphere, Hostaria da Nerone is a small gem in the heart of ancient Rome. It is a shame that you have chosen to reprint the identical review in Rick Steves' Rome 2007 edition.

Barbara Hoertz in Buford, GA USA 03/18/2007

Best: Miky, Monterossa
Why: I had the octopus in tomato sauce, it was fabulous. The catch of the day was delicious. The service was exceptional. We would have went the next night but we could not get in....darn!

Worst: Some pizza place in Sorrento
Why: Seriously, after I found a hair in the pizza the waiter, after we waited forever to get his attention, picked the hair out of the tomato sauce and left the table. We walked out without anyone stopping us.

Les Jorgenson in Vancouver, BC Canada 03/16/2007

Best: The Blue Marlin
Why: Great vibe. Great kids working the bar. Great espresso in the mornings. Great hangout spot after dark. Their Internet points are fairly speedy, and the price per minute is only a wee bit steep.

Worst: The Blue Marlin
Why: As charming as he was during our three days in town, we were disappointed when, near the end, the owner of the bar made some blatantly racist remarks against Asian tourists, citing them as evidence that travel around the world is altogether too accessible. He actually pulled the corners of his eyes to make them slant. It was pathetic and offensive. Loved the place, but I won't be going back.

Best: Self-Service Restaurant Leonardo - Florence
Why: Leonardos has friendly service, inexpensive, and a nice selection of good pastas and secondos. Our children enjoyed eating there as well. In addition, the service was very friendly. We ate there all three nights we were in Florence.

Best: Student Cafe in Rome
Why: They were so friendly and immediately noticed we had the Rick Steve's book.

Annie Chan in New York, NY USA 03/03/2007

Worst: Gelateria in front of Duomo, Milano
Why: I'm currently a student studying in Milano and consider Rick Steve's to be second only to God,ha. However, the Odeon Gelateria in front of the Duomo is not superior by any stretch (which after spending five weeks here has become obvious because most of the good places aren't in such touristy areas). Usually Rick is dead on, unfortunately not this time...the gelato was far from creamy and instead rather icy, so i suggest to bypass this place and search a little deeper in Milano.

Christina in Glendale, CA USA 02/10/2007

Worst: TRATTORIA ALLA RIVETTA
Why: My friends came back on Saturday (3 Feb 07)from a holiday in Venice. They visited the Trattoria alla Rivetta and on two occasions the waiter demanded extra cash, saying they had not given him sufficient Euros. On the first occasion they were asked for the extra cash they thought they had made a mistake and paid up.

On the second occasion the waiter was seen creaming off some of the cash which he placed into a jar behind the bar. He then demanded more cash. My friends, not wishing to make a scene, paid and left and did not visit them for the rest of the holiday. AVOID THIS RIP OFF TRATTORIA

Sonia Smith in Telford, SH UK 02/06/2007

Best: Enoteca Cantine del Vino Gia Shiavi, Venice
Why: We loved the 1 euro cicchetti appetizers and house wine. Yummi little munchies, kind of like "Venetian sushi." It was near our hotel and we ate there maybe 5 times in 2 days. Cool local hangout.

Worst: Not in book, but there is a bar in Florence (around the corner from the recomended Galateria Corrozze) called Caffetteria Dell' Orafo..
Why: Overpriced and completely nasty. We got a pannini that was microwaved with cheap hotdog meat and gross, artificial tasting cheese. The guy was rude and dirty. I have a picture of this place if you want. Don't eat here.

Best: Osteria la Chiacchera in Siena
Why: Even though we didn't make a reservation as you suggested, we managed to get a table. Next time we will make a reservation. We of course went early which seemed to help. You share tables, but it makes it for a fun atmosphere. They have a few tables in the front of the restaurant and a back room with more tables. We were in the back room next to the kitchen. The food was the best that we had on our trip. The service was friendly and they put up with my semi-bad Italian. The pasta was excellent and the sauces were simple and fresh. Their house wine is pretty cheap and tasted really good. Overall, we had a good experience here and would certainly eat here again when we come back to Siena. Thanks for the tip.

LM in Los Angeles, CA USA 01/07/2007

Best: Tie between Ristorante Bruno in Milan vs. Ristorante Antica Osteria da Divo in Siena
Why: Your restaurant recommendations are better than all other guidebooks! We loved the food at Ristorante Bruno in Milan near the Duomo so much that we went back there three times! And the Ristorante Antica Osteria da Divo near the Siena duomo was our best meal of the entire trip! My favorite dish was a parmesan cheese bowl filled with gnocchi and white cheese sauce. Decadent! Thanks for those tips!

Sandi Tedford in Atlanta, GA USA 01/06/2007

Best: Za-Za in Florence
Why: A really fun place (ex. za za written on the cappucino) with a more varied menu than we had seen anywhere. For example we loved the creative salads when you mostly see just ensalada mista on menus.

Best: In Florence: Cafe Ricci and also the one with 'Leo' in the name (sorry I left the guidebook with my daughter in Florence!)
Why: Cafe Ricci had a nice inviting atmosphere, and I had the BEST lasagna imaginable. The 'Leo' restaurant was terrific - my girls loved it so much we ate there several times. Definitely a local Italian eatery - we were the only tourists - and the food was amazing!

Good food too! In Venice we had a wonderful lunch at Osterioa da Alberto - fresh veggies and fish. Very authentic feeling.

Best: Ristorante-Enoteca Del Duca, Volterra
Why: Fabulous food, wonderful atmosphere and staff. Well worth the splurge.

Worst: Trattoria Antico Forno, Civita
Why: My companion is convinced we were the victims of a deliberate scam by owner-chef Franco Sala. As we sat down for lunch on October 15, Franco insisted he would "take care" of us. (We were staying in one of his B&B rooms for two nights.) We explained we just wanted some vegetarian pasta. The pasta dish we received was overcooked and underseasoned, with only a few scraps of vegetables. In addition, he served us two plates of bruschetta and one of grilled vegetables which we did not request and then charged us for the full 3-course menu (30 euros for two lunches; the pasta we requested would have been a total of only 14 euros). I asked for our bill at the end of lunch, but he insisted on putting lunch on our B&B bill, so we didn't find out how much he had charged us until checkout the following morning. I called him to explain the mistake and was told rather rudely there had been no mistake. Since we had a bus to catch and we had indeed eaten the dishes we thought were courtesies of the house, we paid the bill. Ironically, we only ate all the "courtesy" items because we didn't want to hurt his feelings by refusing such a generous gesture--and because the pasta was so bad. Let me clarify that the "misunderstanding" was not a language issue; I am fluent in Italian and Franco speaks English fluently. (By the way, Hostaria del Ponte and Pina's Pizzeria were wonderful.)

Susan Wood in Bellingham, WA USA 11/13/2006

Best: Venice - Trattoria alla Rivetta
Why: Wonderful fun and almost frantic environment with excellent vegetable dishes (which seemed hard to find at other restaurants in Venice) - also, the stuffed scallops are delicious

Diane Larson in Phoenix, AZ USA 11/12/2006

Worst: Belforte, Vernazza
Why: You describe the chef as "Experimental"? Yes, in how to deliver bad value for money! 88 Euros for two mains, deserts and a bottle of (average) wine. There was no mention of cover charge, inaccurate english menu which didn't have prices and a waitress who couldn't have cared less. We had to align english menu with italian menu (with pricing).

We had far better quality meals elsewhere for half the price in Cinque Terre and other places in Tuscany.

We gave our feedback to an attentive chef/manager - presumably Claudio - who was polite but dismissive. The waitress was not truthful in the advice she claimed to have given to us on the meals and associated pricing.

Generally we paid a premium for eating in Vernazza, for pretty average food and indifferent service. Fussy? I don't think so! We have eaten in many restaurants here in Italy and elsewhere.

Worst: Ristorante Montecodeno in Varenna
Why: Sorry Rick, but your special menu was very disappointing. We wanted to take our time and enjoy each couse but the staff seemed to want us out quickly. Almost everything came at once and was not very appealing.

Best: Tratorria La Rivetta in Venezia
Why: Delicious food, grouped tables, excellent interactions, happiness during the meal. Fantastic experience... see the next entry!

Worst: Trattoria La Rivetta in Venezia
Why: Be Careful! The sweet waiter slipped two delicious appetizers in front of us- scallops/shrimp with polenta, 2 small pieces each. Upon finishing them, he appeared with two more appetizers, sausage wrapped with eggplant in a red sauce, equally delectible! We then had great primis! The "worst"- those appetizers cost us 36 Euros, for very good food, but very small portions- Ask before eating, ?Gratis? or ?Cuanto costa?, or... pay the price!

Why: Seafood is excellent. Tiramisu is the best I've ever had.

Best: Trattoria Nella in Florence
Why: THe Owner, Sergio, was a riot! We arrived early (before 7) as Rick recommended and the place was full by 7:30. The service was a bit slow, but the food was great and the couple we sat with were very enjoyable. Food (and vino rosso) were good!

Jack Kummer in Keswick, Ontario, ON Canada 10/18/2006

Worst: Trattoria da Georgio ai Greci, Venice
Why: Some of the worst service I've received in any Restaurant anywhere. The waiter was indifferent at best, literally scolding other diners for not ordering enough courses in their meal (the ladies left, leaving the table vacant for the remainder of the meal, our table was granted at 8:30 for an 8pm reservation, the food was okay, but the wine mediocre and horribly overpriced. Rick is usually right on, but in this case, our experience was less than wonderful. As a matter of fact, we couldn't wait to leave.

Best: La Vina di Vino in Volterra and CIAK in Monterosso
Why: La Vina di Vino was fabulous! What a great "basement" and the snack we got (formaggi and salame) was great along with the recommended wines.

At CIAK, my husband loved the frutti di mare (which came in one of their giant bowls) and, when they made a mistake with my order, I was offered a plate of prawns and octopi. It was fabulous.

Moira Fracassa in Detroit, MI USA 10/15/2006

Best: Ristorante Castello in Verzanna and Belvedere in Montorosso, Cinque Terre
Why: The Castello's view and delicious food, clever waiter and value prices. At the Belvedere, we ordered the Amfora Belvedere, the mixed seafood stew, actually their specialty. Out of the amphora came a lobster, crab claws, 3-4 dozen muscles, a bunch of clams, succulant fish chunks, huge prawns and a lagostino, and then the waitress looked back in the amphora, gave it another shake and a whole octopus slid out. "May I remove the beak," she asked. I was too non-plussed to think that since I prefer my cut of octopus closer to the tentacle and further from the beak it didn't matter, but I nodded while she did the surgery. I've had lots of octopus in sushi restaurants, but this, and all the other fish were the tenderest, tastiest I ever had. This was indeed a meal for 4 as Rick suggests, but Diane and I ate 3/4s of it.

Best: Osteria al Mascaron/ Cip-Ciap
Why: We went to Venice prepared to enjoy its seafood delights and al Mascaron gave it to us. A new, fresh menu each day (we ate there twice) prepared honestly to let the natural lagoon flavors bloom in your mouth. Octopus, anchovies, cuttlefish, squid, an assortment of fish. We were spoiled. Cip-Ciap provided good pizza and more importantly, a friendly, welcoming front man in a hustle-bustle town that can be too busy to slow down for tourists.

Shirley CA USA 09/18/2006

Best: Trattoria San Giacomo - Bellagio
Why: Their prices were fair and the service was typical Italian...done in "Italian time". The food was terrific. Seasonal dishes represent the region and what's quintessentially Italian. Try (if you can) their linguine with dried fish sauce...Delizioso!

Worst: the outdoor seats filled with Americans
Why: While Italian restaurants don't allow smoking inside anymore, they do welcome it in outdoor seating providing ashtrays. I noticed some smokers being "poo-pooed" by Americans who didn't like the smoke. The message I understood, the messenger's attitude...soured the meal.

Shirley CA USA 09/18/2006
