Croatia & Slovenia

Best ways to improve this book:

Inform readers about the cigarette smoke in restaurants and surrounding environments in Croatia and Slovenia. I tried to prepare myself and never complained, but I have asthma and it was tough at times. I had to retreat to my air conditioned apartments supplied with food from the fish and produce market on some evenings to cleanse my lungs.

Hi Rick,

I just recently returned from Croatia and your book was great! Just an idea for all your travel books. As is normal when travelling you meet people and discuss other places you've been or where you're from, etc and it's always nice to have a WORLD MAP handy to pinpoint the location you're talking about... and everyone learns something. I really really think you guys should add a WORLD MAP to each of your travel books. Wouldn't cost much and I think people would get a lot of use out of it. I live in Paris and keep a WORLD MAP in my briefcase and you wouldn't believe how many times I pull it out at a café to provide a visual to our discussion. ADD A WORLD MAP! You'll only get positive feedback! Matt

The only feedback I have is that I couldn't find some of the sites mentioned in your book on the maps. It would be really helpful if they corresponded better because the places you mention are sure to be amazing.

Provide directions from Predjama Castle to Tourist Farm Hudicevic. I could see there was a closer route rather than going back to Postojna, but the locals kept pointing us back in that direction and we wasted a lot of time getting there.

We couldn't have been happier with the recommendations in the guide book. Just one addition, if you can: about where to park your rental car in Dubrovnik. If you want to stay in or close to the old city, a car is a liability. Our host helped us find a parking spot on the night we arrived, but 2 days later, returning from our Mostar excursion, we had to wait 45 minutes before a spot opened up.

I'd add a section on the wine region of Goriska Brda to the book. It's a lovely section of the country right next to the Italian border, so a logical stopover for car travellers in that direction. We had a nice tour of the large coop winery in Dobrovo. They get a weekly UK bus tour, but otherwise English-speaking tourists are rare. It was one of the most personal tours we've had in Europe.

I think the first advice in the book is the best... Rovinj is a touristic beach town with a lot of atmosphere. The best idea is to choose a restaurant for the setting and forget about finding a truly gormet experience. Even one of your other "notables", Veli Joze, was less than notable... mediocre food and poor service from a wait staff that seemed more intent on processing customers than serving them. They were very busy though. It seems as long as the guide books keep mentioning their name, they will do as little as they have to.
