Spain 2012 Guidebook
Best and worst sights, experiences and destinations:
Best: Express bus from airport to Madrid City Center
Why: It only cost 2 Euros/person to ride the bus. It would have cost at lest 35 Euros to take a taxi. There were only two stops on the bus, so it was very fast and convenient. Of course we took the bus back to the airport when we left. By saving about 70 Euros, we figure it more than paid for the guidebook!

Best: Alhambra
Why: It takes work to get to Granada and your book convinced us it was worth it. And it was! We would have went to Madrid, Barcelona and Sevilla for sure, but Granada was on the fence.

Best: Cordoba & Nerja
Why: Cordoba: coverage of the Mesquita and the jewish quarter excellent. Nerja: nice town a pleasant respite from all the tourist areas.
Worst: Driving
Why: The distances between sites such as Sevilla, Cordoba, Granada are not really condusive to day trips from Marbella. While the main hiways are quite good between these areas, there is not a mile of straight road to be found.
Ronald Reitenauer in Yucca Valley, CA USA 11/26/2011
Best: Alhambra
Why: It is magnificient. However, due to the fact it was not built of materials to withstand the test of time as the Palace was, everyone should go see it now before any further deterioratoin occurs.

Best: The Aziz Tour was one of our favorite experiences.
Why: Aziz Begdouri made all the arrangements for our travel from Tarifa, Spain, met us at the Tangier dock and took us on a wonderful, walking tour, carefully explaining the cultural and historical aspects of each site. We saw and learned lots!

Best: Touring the Alcazar in Seville with Concepcion
Why: Concepcion was fantastic, reasonably priced and a real sweetheart! I wish we would have taken more tours with her.
Worst: Flamenco Museum in Seville
Why: Expensive and not really that interesting. It is a small museum that is fine for a short visit but not worth the cost.
Susan Novak in Mt. Prospect, IL USA 11/14/2011
Best: The Alhambra, Granada, Toledo, la Sagrada Familia - Barcelona, and Ronda
Why: The Alhambra is so amazing. I stood in line at 7 a.m. for my ticket and spent 5 hours of my day there once I got in. I was not expecting such a heavy Muslim influence in the city, but I thought it was beautiful. I fell in love with Granada; it's culture is so incredibly rich. The culture and architecture in Toledo is pure fairy tale, and absolutely charming. La Sagrada Familia, well, I don't know if it's the most beautiful cathedral I've ever seen, but it's probably the grandest. It felt more like a tourist attraction than church, though. And I loved lingering in Ronda. Little towns like Ronda and Segovia are perfect after the hustle & bustle of the big cities. Definitley make sure you have enough gigs on your card for pictures though. I was limited to 400!
Worst: Barcelona
Why: Barcelona was unimpressive, I felt, not counting la Sagrada Familia and Picasso Museum. The city lacked soul. Granada was a complete 180! I hope to return to Spain again, but I can't ever see myself going back to Barcelona.
Lisa in San Antonio, TX USA 10/29/2011

Why: Having travelled through Italy & seeing so many churches, this was by far the BEST I've ever seen. Jaw dropping, tear on the cheek good!

Barbara Pearce in Freeport , NY USA 10/17/2011
Best: Caadques
Why: I will admit I have a penchant for small, seaside towns and this in the same league as places like Collioure, Cinque Terre towns, small towns in the Algarve or places like Mendocino, CA.
David/Lakeview in Chicago, IL USA 10/15/2011
Best: Granada-the Alhambra
Why: it was breathtaking and so intelligent. This is one site that cannot be missed. We booked a guided tour for this one.
We took close to 1900 pictures from our trip Madrid, Granada, Barcelona, and Sevilla but being at the actual sites, museums, streets and mingling with locals just cannot be captured.
Maria P. Chan in SF Bay Area, CA USA 09/29/2011
Best: the Aziz tour
Why: It was a great tour and we did like Omar (just beware the spice shop!)
Worst: Marbella
Why: It wasn't really recommended, but we stayed in a lovely condo there, that was about the only part of Marbella we enjoyed. The beach was filthy - covered in cigarettes and there was garbage floating in the water. The restaurants are obscenely expensive. We were unimpressed. It's very expensive to stay there - they really need to put some tax euros into cleaning up that beach!
Joanne Barhite in Chelsea, MI USA 09/07/2011
Best:
Why: That list would be too long -- may I just say that I feel everything you liked and really promoted completely lived up to my expectations. On the surprising list: Malaga (see above), the gardens at the Alcazar in Cordoba, and Segovia. Oh, and thanks for the tip to Mario Zamorano's in Toledo -- we had a Roman gladius sent thome!
Worst: Italica and Madrid
Why: Worst only by degrees! We had wanted Italica to be Pompei, which it clearly was not going to be to begin with. The bus was easy and the site was nice, but had we realized that all the artifacts we back in Seville, we might have done the museum FIRST and then view the site. In retrospect, I might have tried harder to get to Merida.
Madrid -- well we spent one full day and two part days -- and by mid afternoon of the full day, we had been to EVERY site recommended in the Guidebook that was open and were down to actively hunting up options to fill the time. Had it not been "free" night at the Prado, we would have gone back there, and had the Archeology Museum not been under renovation we would have spent more time there, and had we realized that the Military Museum needed passports for entry we would have gone there. I'm wondering if there might not be the possibility of developing a walking tour or two for Madrid?
Mary Byrne in Victoria, BC Canada 07/24/2011
Best: Reina Sofia in Madrid
Why: Nice collection in an easy to navigate museum. Nice courtyard with snack bar and benches.
Worst: Plaza Mayor
Why: I love grand squares, but this one just seemed odd. There were lots of "characters" dressed like Elvis, indians, etc...who wanted you to take pictures with them for a fee. Not sure any connection with Madrid and Elvis.
Elizabeth in Pittsburg, CA USA 07/15/2011
Best: The Alhambra
Why: It is spectacularly beautiful.
Sharon in Sharon, MA USA 07/15/2011
Best: Ronda
Why: We totally fell in love with Ronda and the charm of the village and its inhabitants had us wishing we'd spent much more than 2 nights there. It was relaxing and pretty and the train trip there from Seville via a stopover in Cordoba passed great scenery. The bullring was fascinating and the gorge impressive, but overall the atmosphere of the town is what impressed us.
Worst: Maria la Canastera zambra dancers, Granada
Why: Very touristy, crowded, felt like we were watching automatons, 'sangria' tasted like coloured water, not worth the money, especially compared with Los Gallos in Seville.
June in Auckland, New Zealand 07/07/2011
Worst: Reina Sofia, Madrid
Why: The collection from the late 1800s through WWII is amazing and I could spend an hour staring at Guernica, but they seem to give little thought (and no audioguide coverage whatsoever) to the stuff from WWII to the present, which is tucked away on the top floor with the special exhibits.
John Barcus in Fort Worth, TX USA 07/05/2011
Best: Barcelona
Why: Boqueteria! We love chuchos.
Della Schnell in Fresno, CA USA 07/01/2011
Best: Concepcion'sDelgado'swalking tours (all 3) in Sevilla
Why: Small group, great personality, knowledgeable, never boring, accomodating.
Worst: Seville Hop on, hop off bus
Why: I paid the EXTRA 3 euros for the privlege of "hopping off and on "(8 E total) but there was no where to hop off. Please make it clear that it stops ONLY at the train station and for the 5 minute break. Also let readers know that buses run one hour apart
Avis Letner in Santa Cruz, CA USA 06/22/2011
Worst: Toledo
Why: Once we got off the train in Toledo, there should be more specific information on the Tourista Buses. There were the open covered seats vs the covered seats. They had different rates on it and it would be good it was mentioned in the book.
christine in San Francisco, CA USA 06/19/2011
Best: the castle in Jerez
Why: small, no crowds, excellent dual language signs
stolzberg in portland , or USA 06/18/2011
Worst: Julia tours in Madrid
Why: Do not use Julia Tours in Madrid or Toledo” We booked the Madrid sightseeing trip and the Toledo day trip at the same time
The bus for the Madrid trip was not designed for sightseeing in a city - could not see well - the seats had high backs and view limited. Should have known we were in trouble when we stopped at Hard Rock Cafe - give me a breaki. Information along route was just OK - I would have enjoyed learning a little more about the history of the city and the citizens The tour guide on the trip was pleasant enough and friendly
The Toledo day trip was a disaster. The tour leader was very aloof and downright rude. She had no interest at all in anyone in her group. It was obvious she just wanted to get through the day. She did not even introduce herself to us. We got to Toledo to find it was quite a strenuous walking route. Although we were OK with that we felt as if there should have been some info about that in the itinerary. We were taken to the cathedral - she told us not to take pictures before hand - no time - and that we could do it afterwards. She did a decent job of the guided tour of cathedral in terms of imparting information but was very glum and never ever smiled. We then visited a church with famous painting by Goya - and then to a synagogue. We passed a number of very interesting looking shops and several of us expressed interest in visiting them but were told no time
They then took us to the bottom of the hill away from the historic district and were given the choice of four less than desirable restaurants - the tour guide disappeared without giving any info about any of the places. 75 minutes later she reappeared and herded us all into the bus. A number of people indicated they would have much preferred being able to shop for a little while in the historic area. After lunch we were taken to a "workshop" where we supposedly were to see craftspeople at work. Of course there was a souvenir shop there with the same stuff we saw in all the cheap gift shops everywhere else in Spain.
As if the day hadn't gone bad enough already, we were then told we were going to the Alcazar which is a new government building, housing some type of military museum - and taken to see a courtyard - very unimpressive and not at all interesting. What a waste of time
We finally got back to Madrid about 5:15 The tour director really was beyond awful. We got off the bus feeling very dejected and that we had received a very poor tour. I would never ever use Julia tours again.
Pam Plaskett in Marietta, OH USA 06/14/2011
Best: Tangier, Morocco
Why: Jamal Jamali (jamaltour1@gmail.com), who was recommended as a guide in the Spain 2011 book, went above and beyond our expectations. He speaks 4 languages and was able to retrace all the sights that were familiar to my mother, who grew up in Tangier in the 40's, even locating her childhood home. No easy task, considering all the street names have changed. The best way to experience Morocco is with a private guide, so avoid large tourist group tours if possible.
Teresa Hopgood in Cape Coral, FL USA 06/11/2011
Worst: The tourist bus in Toledo
Why: The path followed only goes outside the walls, the driver refused to give us a receipt and there was only one place to get off and no reason to not get back on immediately.
Ronald Gottesman in Anaheim, CA USA 06/05/2011
Best: Seeing Roman aqueducts in Segovia
Why: Well-worth the trip. The town is very quaint and the sights there were amazing. Also the cathedral there is a great sight. We walked up the hill to see the castle/amory. All were worth the extra trip out of Madrid.
Gretchen Farrar-Foley in Milwaukee, WI USA 05/28/2011
Best: The monkeys up on the rock
Why: They're MONKEYS! :-D
Worst: Nothing
Why: Gibraltar is awesome!
Travis in Puyallup, WA USA 05/21/2011
Best: Sagrada Familia in Barcelona
Why: The entire experience was breathtaking. It was incredible to see what can be accomplished when man uses his intellect and energy to glorify God.
Worst: Plaza Mayor in Madrid
Why: Construction on a temporary event site in the center of the plaza took away from the overall ambience.
Greg in Ventura, CA USA 05/17/2011
Best: Madrid: Bullfight, Barcelona: Sagrada Familia
Why: Ethics asisde, this was fascinating. I couldn't watch most of it, but such a cultural experience. They broadcast this stuff on TV as if it were an ESPN event with commentators, play-by-plays, and instant replays! Barcelona for me was a big yawn, except for this intriguing cathedral. Did not expect to be so captivated by it and by Gaudi. Ended up going to the Parc Guell (another Gaudi creation). That was a bit of yawn, but still interesting. DO NOT attempt to walk there.
Worst: Madrid: Palace, Barcelona: Ramblas, Beach
Why: They just tried to replicate Versailles, and frankly, they failed. This was such a bore and a waste of money. The Ramblas was such a circus. Why do people go there?? Beach there was lame.
Susana Galvan in Atlanta, GA USA 05/08/2011
Best: Casa de la Memoria de Al-Andalus in Sevilla
Why: The flamenco dancing was breathtaking in an intimate setting, you could almost reach out and touch the dancers from the front row. The experience was totally non-touristy and very reasonably priced
Rich Zayatz in Asheville, NC USA 05/03/2011
Worst: El Caldero in Madrid
Why: The recommended rice dish Arroz al Caldero was WAY to slaty and there were no prawns, only shrimp smallet than any salad shrimp I have ever seen!!!!!
Bill Strehl in Fulton, MD USA 04/19/2011
Best: Ronda, Spain
Why: The location and setting could not be better for anyone with a camera on hand. 300-ft sandstone cliffs, 8th century structures, top restaurants and museums

Best: sagrada familia

Best: Montserrat Day Trip
Why: Incredibly easy to reach the site if you follow Rick's tips on getting there. Definitely take the cable car (Montserrat Aeri) when you get off the R5 train from Barcelona.
Worst: Casa Mila
Why: Sorry, Rick, but you you're wrong on this site. Bare, hollow, a completely UNinspiring rooftop (NOT jaw-dropping as you describe), and a total waste of 10 Euros!
Thomas Elliot in Nom de Plume, TX USA 03/09/2011
Best: your recommended flamenco dancing by students in Sevilla in the hotel in the Jewish quarter
Why: Authentic, NO amplification...the sounds of the dancer's heels clicking were as loud as the singer and the guitarist. It was a terrific introduction to flamenco...we sought out more of it in Cordoba near the Moorish temple/cathedral - also a terrific experience: 3 different dancers, more of a Moorish accent to the singing.
Karin McCullough in Seattle, WA USA 03/07/2011
Best: Royal Palace in Madrid, Alhambra in Granada, Evening paseos
Why: My jaw dropped in nearly every room in the Royal Palace--the most impressive palace I have toured. The Palacios Nazaries was worth standing in line starting at 7:20 am. (I couldn't get the Alhambra reservation site to take any of my credit cards.) What amazing plasterwork! And I loved the paseos in Seville and Granada.
Kyla Gurganus in Ypsilanti, MI USA 03/04/2011
Best: Catalan National Art Museum, Picasso Museum
Why: Catalan museum deserves 3 rating, good art by Catalan artists. I loved the Picasso tributes to Las Meninas at the Picasso Museum, having seen the real thing in Madrid.
Dale in Fairfield, OH USA 03/04/2011
Best: La Carboneria Bar, Sevilla
Why: This place provides a spontaneous music happening that is full of energy and joy. We heard terrific piano and guitar and saw a great, mature flamenco dancer. We went early, long before the show started and happened upon wonderful informal performances.
Worst: El Faro de Triana, Sevilla
Why: We wanted to dine overlooking the water but found the deck cold, windy, with poles blocking views and food that was barely edible.
Joan in Maurertown, VA USA 01/29/2011
Best: Los Callos Flamenco
Why: Expensive but absolutely worth the price! Very, Very cool experience.
Worst: Valle de los Caidos
Why: It's closed. :( We got all the way there to be told it had been closed for 4 months.
Sara Kinsey in Redmond, WA USA 01/12/2011
Best: Snapshot Barcelona: Barri Gňtic
Why: The Barri Gňtic guided walk was a nice introduction to old Barcelona and also led to a serendipitous experience. I followed the directions from the Portal de l'Angel to the Carrer de Santa Anna, and discovered that there was to be a guitar concert in the Santa Anna church that weekend. It was a lovely experience: intimate setting, beautiful music, and wine served afterward. Just shows you never know what you'll find when you turn a corner! Regarding the sights in the Barri Gotic, I think you've missed the mark by giving the Museu d'Histňria de la Ciutat (City History Museum) only a "try hard to see" rating--I think it deserves a "don't miss it!" I stumbled across it today, and was pretty amazed by the exhibits--The audio guide was comprehensive but not long-winded, and I was fascinated with the Roman city laid out underneath the "modern" gothic buildings. I bet kids would love this! I had a great conversation with one of the museum security people too, by the way. If you speak Spanish or Catalán, it's worth asking a question or two and engaging a local in an enlightening cultural exchange--they love talking about their city!
Worst: Picasso Museum
Why: This should be downgraded to "try hard to see". It is interesting to see his earlier works, but aside from "Las Meninas" and related paintings, overall the collection was disappointing. There are better examples of the Blue and Rose periods in the Met in NYC, and I've seen a more comprehensive (and more interesting) exhibit of his ceramics in, of all places, Tacoma, WA (a temporary exhibit unfortunately). Go see it, of course, but don't expect as big a thrill as the guidebook promises. The Joan Miró Foundation is much better.
Elaine Newton-Bruzza in Portland, OR USA 12/26/2010
Worst: Hotel Toledo Imperial
Why: I made a reservation (and paid for a room) this morning at the Hotel Toledo Imperial's website. When I arrived this afternoon, the hotel was dark and locked. The hotel next door, Alfonso VI, was kind enough to call the Imperial for me, but there was no answer. I went for a leisurely lunch and returned to find the hotel still dark and locked. So, I got myself a room at Alfonso VI.
Fred Taub in Seattle, WA USA 11/29/2010
Best: Many different sights and experiences
Why: Madrid: walking tours from TI, Prado Museum, main squares. Toledo: Cathedral, tourist train. Seville: El Arenal Flamenco Show, Cathedral and Bell Tower, Alcazar, Church of the Macarena, Bullfight Museum. Granada: Alahambra, Royal Chapel and Cathedral. Both Ronda and Segovia has great sights.
Worst: Flamenco Museum in Seville
Why: Overpriced, hot, dark and really not much to it.
Judy in Alexandria, MN USA 11/20/2010
Best: Said Tours in Tangier, Morocco
Why: Being independent travelers we were somewhat hesitant to book a tour with Said. We called him from Spain and he arranged for our ferry tickets. Said warmly greeted us at the docks and our group of four adults began our tour of Tangier in his van. Said was at all times considerate and concerned about our comfort and our enjoyment of the tour. He was extremely knowledgeable about Tangier taking us to the richest areas, the beautiful beaches, a mysterious cave, markets, the Kasbah, camel ride, and lunch at an authenic Moroccan restaurant. We never would have seen the sights of the "everyday" Tangier without this wonderful guide. I highly recommend Said Tours to anyone visiting Tangier for the day. I believe he also does tours to other places in Morocco.

Best: Granada
Why: Nowadays I'm living in Edinburgh but two weeks ago I had 5 days of holidays and I decided to go to visit Granada. Beautiful city, believe me. In the Hotel I heard about and enterprise which offers visits around the city centre only for 12€ called Granada a pie. I decide to book one because I traveled alone and I prefered to visit the city with somebody and better if she/he knows the place. Wonderful idea. It was fantastic becaus the quide, Mercedes, was incredible professional with her explanations and really outgoing. All the doubts I had were answered with care and dedication, actually I feel know Like if I know the city very well. It was the best of my holidays. I don't want to forget that after the visit we went to have really good tapas(something very spanish)and the quide recommended us different places of the city, really interesting to go to, like restaurants with flamenco floor-show. If you go to Granada don't forget to book at granada a pie.
Nieves in Edinburgh, UK 11/09/2010
Best: Museo de Bellas Artes, Seville
Why: Top notch art by Seville's masters Murillo and Zurbaran without the crowd and tour groups of the Prado in Madrid. The numerous courtyards in the museum contributed to a tranquil and quiet setting to enjoy the art.
L. Balcita in Naperville, IL USA 10/29/2010
Best: Alcazar in Sevilla
Why: I loved the gardens, and it was very helpful to be able to read the self-guided tour in advance and just enjoy ourselves wandering around.
Worst: Alhambra
Why: The waiting for the tickets in the morning, we did not have reservations - our mistake. But honestly, there were 2 lines for tickets, one for cash and one for credit. Had I known about the credit line, my friend and I would have divided and conquered. Had we not been really early to the ticket line as was recommeded, we would not have gotten in, plus there were only 300 available tix that day. Also, the disorganization of the entry process into the palace seemed unnecessary and excessively slow. The rest of the palace grounds were beautiful, and were more interesting than the palace!
Hilda Fernandez in Los Angeles, CA USA 10/28/2010
Best: Our travel guides in Madrid and Bilboa
Why: We hired letango tour guides recommended in your travel book on Madrid and Toledo. The guides were friendly and knowledgeable. We were delighted to have discovered this company through your book. They made our trip memorable.
Gale USA 10/27/2010
Best: The cheesy train in Toledo. I loved it.
Why: First of all it was cute and it gave you a good tour of the town for a small price.
Carmelita Stone in Plattsburg, MO USA 10/13/2010
Best: Rosa's tour at Granada
Why: Abundant relevant, interesting information presented in a clear manner in both English and Spanish. Rosa was energetic, enthusiastic, and responded to questions.
Jim Mahoney in Irvine, CA USA 10/07/2010
Best: Casa Mila, Sagrada Familia
Why: Gaudi sites were very exciting, especially Casa Mila. We took the most photos at these two sites and wished we would have also had time to see Casa Batllo. We also loved Parc Guell.
Worst: Montjuic
Why: The castle wasn't so special, the Joan Miro museum was very unimpressive, but the Catalan Art Museum (MNAC) made the trip worthwhile. The cable car ride up the mountain is fun and beautiful, but expensive and very short.
Kim in Chicago, IL USA 10/04/2010
Worst: Barcelona - La Bodequeta Restaurant
Why: We ate outside. Waiter was OK at best but food was terrible. Chicken croquettes made Colonel Sanders look like La Bernadin. Artichokes were from a can and mushy. Sardines were sardines - I could do that at home. Tomato on bread was tomato juice IN bread. Really bad food from beginning to end. F- . Sorry, in our opinion you really missed the boat at least on this night.

Why: It was far more amazing than I ever imagined.
Katy in New York, NY USA 08/18/2010
Best: Sagrada Familia in Barcelona
Why: It was just wonderful. The exhibits on Gaudi and the models in the basement were fascinating, and it was amazing to watch a great cathedral being built.
Worst: The Ramblas
Why: Nothing but a wretched tourist trap as far as I'm concerned. It's hard to understand how this was rated 3 stars, and Parc Guell only got 1 star.
Deanne Reynolds in Chelan, WA USA 08/15/2010
Worst: Cathedral in Sevilla
Why: They decided to close before posted visiting hours because it was "Too hot, so we're going home." Maybe just note in the book that when traveling during the summer months, attractions may close early due to the heat?

Ann Heft in Gainesville, Fl USA 08/04/2010
Best: Alcazar--Seville
Why: We really enjoyed touring this sumptuous palace, with its stunning mosaics and carved stone interiors and refreshing gardens.
Worst: Alhambra--Granada
Why: Obviously a "must see" in Granada, but it was unbearable hot and crowded when we toured the main grounds -- even though I had booked tickets for the Palacios Nazaries at 5:00 PM to avoid the crush. I honestly think I was delirious with heat stroke for half of it. However, the Generalife Gardens were beautiful and a nice place to cool down. We also took that dirt path back from the Alhambra to the Albayzin.

Worst: Barcelona
Why: We were robbed by four large men on the metro into the city. There is nothing we could do. Once we were in our apartment which we had rented through VRBO, we had some men break in steal our computers and cameras and spray pepper spray in the eyes of my freind when she woke uo to find them stealing her purse. We called the police. They came 3 hours later and didn't care. One of the other women had her purse stolen while walking around. They made another attempt the next day to take her other purse. One of the other women had her jewelry stolen from her suitcase. We are experienced travelers who don't take chances. We heard from a number of people there that these aren't isolated incidences. DON"T GO TO BARCELONA!!
Fred in Charleston, sc USA 07/15/2010
Best: Sagrada Familia
Why: Seeing Gaudi's work changed my view since I had always associated Gaudi with "gaudy." His creativity and genius truly put him far ahead of the era in which he lived. Go early or you may not even get close to the church.
Sharron Stevens in Oberstaufenbach, Germany 07/10/2010
Best: Posada de la Villa, Madrid and Jose' Maria in Segovia
Why: Posada de la Villa-For a NICE meal and great atmosphere, This was such a break from the tapas bars. They did not have suckling pigs, however, but a fantastic 1/4 lamb. The building has been restored (almost oo well) with a beautiful feel. I recommend sitting upstairs for the nicest room. Jose' Maria- Wonderful atmosphere (back rooms), great food, sucking pigs (but you didn't tell us about the traditional "plating" of the pig.
Worst: Alcazar in Segovia, Valley of the Fallen near Madrid, Casa Paco, Madrid
Why: Both closed just for a day (our planned visit day) with no warning on the schedules we checked. Missing those was a real letdown. Maybe your site could have a "closings" schedule which could keep us informed. Casa Paco was pricey and had nothing on the mnenu which stood out beyond the many tapas bars. Not really a great dinner spot.
Lora Rozzi in Granger, IN USA 07/06/2010
Best: Gaudi sights (Casa Mila, Sagrada Familia)
Why: One of a kind experience. You feel like you're in a fairytale land.
Worst: Madrid
Why: It's just another city. Not worth your time.
Amanda in Montreal, Qc CANADA 06/22/2010
Worst: Paul McGrath's Andalusian Minibus Tour
Why: I had confirmed our tour with Paul and we had set a date, place and time to meet. He NEVER SHOWED UP! I found out later that day that he had left a message at our hotel 5 minutes before we were supposed to meet at the designated location (obviously not enough time when the meeting place was across the city from where we were staying, which he knew). He was very unprofessional about this and I would NOT recommend using him.

Best: That we'd have a wonderful time!
Why: We went to Madrid, with sidetrips to Toledo and Segovia, Grenada, Seville, and Barcelona, with side trips to Montserrat and Sitges. It seemed every place was better than the last -- and we loved Madrid, where we started.
In Seville, "Connie" was wonderful tour guide and well worth every penny!
We truly enjoyed your mini essays throughout!
Worst: Los Gallos in Seville
Why: We felt the show could easily have been cut to one hour from two. Such angst!
Shannon Gardiner Collins in Alexandria, VA USA 06/09/2010
Best: Walking tour of Madrid
Why: Madrid is a beautiful, vibrant city and best seen on foot. We enjoyed the architecture, the street performers and all of the well trained Madrid muts!
Worst: the Bull Fight
Why: I love Hemingway, but the bull fight was ritualized slaughter. Three bulls were so badly wounded by the picadillos (spelling?) that they had to be taken out of the ring before the madores had a chance to fight them.
Teddie Lohmeier in Nicholson, GA USA 05/31/2010
Best: Barcelona
Why: Gaudi, great restaurants, so many things to see and do I'd like to come back.
Worst: Granada
Why: After seeing Alhambra and Royal Chapel, I feel like I've seen everything I'd want to see in Granada and don't need to go back.
Nicole in Bayonne, NJ USA 05/31/2010
Best:
Why: Just to state that the guidebook really helped us plan and navigate our trip with only a few days of last minute planning.

Worst: Salvador Dali Museum - Figueras
Why: So busy! Couldn't even move around. Too busy to enjoy the art.
Anika in Longmont, CO USA 05/19/2010
Best: Seville, the Casa de la Memoria de Al-Andalus flamenco show. The Alcazar in Seville (liked better than Alhambra and not as complicated to get in. Cathedral's stained glass in Leon.

Best: Too many to name; your guide was our bible.
Why: We would not have enjoyed Tangier without Aziz, who you recommended. While there only for 24 hours, we saw the new and old parts of the city and its outlying areas and dined at a fine restaurant, El Minzah, and a real hole-in-the-wall one where we had a four-course, fresh seafood lunch to remember forever. Does Aziz actually know everyone in this city?

Best: Nerja
Why: Wonderful place to spend time. Good beaches, good people and good food.
Worst: Rhonda
Why: Fascinating place but too touristy for us.
Steve in Westcliffe, CO USA 04/27/2010
Best: Gibraltar
Why: We had an excellent time in Gilbraltar. We didn't get bit by apes (but did feed peanuts and have our pictures taken). We found the tour/taxis were actually a great value, particularly given the posts from people trying to make the drive on their own. I was one of the primary drivers and I am glad I wasn't having to circumnavigate the rock and all of it's geography. This was one of the highlights or our visit to the spanish peninsula.
Tom Matteson in Fairfield, CA USA 04/27/2010
Best: Nerja
Why: We happened across Nerja by accident because our nephew had strep throat on our vacation and were looking for something to do while he could initially recuperate. We visited the caves in Nerja which are spectacular and then we were pleasantly surprised with downtown Nerja. My wife and sister thought it was "cute". I found the city attractive and much more than a fishing village. It sits on the Med and has great visuals. Nerja is definitely worth a visit.
Tom Matteson in Fairfield, CA USA 04/27/2010
Best: Alhambra, Granada
Why: Wow! This place is beyond cool... Moorish castle/fort/royal quarters, royal palace, Catholic church, the spanish sierras and gypsies living in the hills to boot! This city/place is a must see!
Tom Matteson in Fairfield, CA USA 04/27/2010
Best: Ronda
Why: Spectacular city/town.... Beautiful vistas and lots of history. We stayed in the Marbella/Malaga area and this was a very convenient trip. Don't miss Ronda.

Best: Aziz in Tangier
Why: We only had a day to get a broad brush of Tangier and Aziz did a great job. We did the Gran Tour with mini-bus and walking tour through the Kasbah and market. Everyone knows Aziz and he kept the aggressive peddlers away. Given English is like fourth on the list of languages spoken in Tangier having a multilingual tour guide was worth every Euro. We probably would not have visited Tangier during our two weeks in Spain had it not been for Rick Steve's recommendation of Aziz in his book and the friendly and articulate dialogue with Aziz before, during, and after our visit. Although our trip was focused on Spain, this turned out to be a HIGHLIGHT of our trip. Thank you Rick and Aziz! We had a great time!
Tom Matteson in Fairfield, CA USA 04/26/2010
Best: Flamenco
Why: We went to the flamenco at Casa de las Memoria. It was amazing. Everything was perfect, and the young performers (both male and female) were very hot. ;)
Worst: Paul McGrath - Andulusian White Hills Tour
Why: Paul has reduced his trip from 4 towns to 3 and raised his prices to $55, making it less attractive. I don't know if you need a license to be a tour guide, but if you do, I suspect Paul doesn't have one, because when the police pulled us over, he told us to tell them we were his friends. He left us at Zahara for 2 hours, while he cleaned out his rental property, which was OK however, he only gave us 30min. at Grazalema. I said I wanted at least an hour, and surprisingly, he snapped at us and said "aww the town is really small, there's nothing to see here" and started to whine about how late we would get back. I took an hour anyways, and we still got back to Sevilla over an hour early. Leaving Grazalema, he backed into a car, and put a huge crack and dent in the other person's bumper. He said it was "nothing" and drove off. Hit and run... Then he told us about some Roman ruins on the way, and offered to take us, but said "It'll cost you". So much for not wanting to get back late.
Paul was extremely unprofessional, the worst "tour guide" I have ever had. He wasn't negative so much as just too honest about things. We went to the Olive Mill but that just about it. He said we couldn't go unless we bought something. Paul showed us around a little but the owner remained in the store. He told us the Olive Oil mill owner is "a right-wing nutcase who supports Franco". He said that he says he has owned the olive mill for generations, but the truth is his father bought it. The mill itself was moldy, rusty, and dirty.
He only stopped once to tell us some local facts. We learned nothing historical or cultural from him.
He talked about his divorce (about 5 years ago) and about illegal immigrants (he was illegal...still not a Spanish citizen). He didn't seem depressed or in a bad mood, just a realist who seems a little disenchanted about life in general. He said that he thought the catholic church was "a bit pagan if you ask me" and that the church's popularity was waning and that is why the buildings are closed up. He said the wool in Grazalema is all imported now, not local.
He said that it is "nice to be in Rick Steve's, I wish I could get in more of those you know". He said that Rick Steve's hasn't taken the tour personally "but I might of had a mystery shopper you know". If you were with us Rick, I know you would have been disappointed, and even embarrassed. He does not deserve the huge amount of business your recommendation gives him (he said almost all his business is from you...he doesn't advertise anymore).
He was not a "tour guide" so much as a bus driver. We should of taken the bus to Jerez for half the price, and seen the horses.

Why: Ambiance; and the Alcazar is almost as good as the Alhambra.
Dave Fisher in Calgary, AB Canada 04/12/2010
Best: The self-guided walk in the Gothic quater.
Why: This walk covers all the highlights in this area of Barcelona - the cloisters its geese of the cathedral, Mont Taber, the Roman temple ruins, and the Sardana dances.
Jodie Padgett in Carlinville, IL USA 04/06/2010
Worst: Gibralter
Why: Gibralter's motto should be "a missed opportunity". Rarely have I seen a place with so much potential be such a huge disappointment. It is a true waste of time and money. "The Rock" COULD be one of the best tourist destinations in all of Europe... but it is dirty, disorganized, gimmicky and DISHONEST. From the tourist information to the subsandwich shop there was DECEPTIVE ploys for us to spend money (EVEN by the GOV'T!) and two attempted short-short changes. Totally not worth the time. Our British friends would do well to hand it back to Spain (perhaps with strategic military privilege strings) thereby ending the standoff and let the razing and redeveloping begin. It was a mess in every way.

Best: Concepcion Delgado, Paul Mcgrath
Why: We recently traveled to Seville to visit our daughter, a college student on a study abroad program. We relied heavily on the Seville guidebook, which was exceptionally helpful in enhancing our visit. The best part of our visit were the tours we took with Concepcion (Sevilla walking tour, Alcazar tour) and the White Village tour with Paul. Both were informative, insightful, and enthusiastic. We would highly recommed them to anyone traveling to Seville.
Wayne Goldschneider in Cherry Hill, NJ USA 03/16/2010
Best: Sevilla!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why: We were in Madrid for a business trip. We had to decide what to do with the next 3 personal days. We thought maybe Barcelona, but then we decided to follow Rick's advice on planning our itinerary, so we went from Madrid to Toledo to Sevilla (by train). Train travel is easy and Sevilla was awesome! While there we went to the flamenco show at Casa de las Memoria. We left our hotel and hailed a taxi and told him where we wanted to go and he laughed and pointed to the alley across the street...turns out we were about 100 yards from the place!
Julie Langill in Danville, CA USA 02/15/2010
Best: Alhambra, Granada
Why: Even though the weather was bad, the Alhambra was an amazing site to see. Palacios Nazaries was beautiful!
Worst: Sagrada Familia, Barcelona
Why: Site most disappointed in because it was under renovation when we visited. Spent 12 euros to walk in and see scaffolding up. Better to just sit out front and take pictures. Would be better once they finish working on it.
NJ in Seattle, WA USA 02/08/2010
Best: Jerez Horse Show
Why: Even a non horsey person will find it a quintessential Spanish experience
Worst: Madrid
Why: The most boring capital on the continent. Two days is one too many.
Harvey Lawrence in Tacoma, WA USA 02/06/2010
Best: Barcelona, Madrid, Gibralter
Why: Barcelona- great food, great Hostel Grau, loved the Sagrada Familia amazing sculptures Madrid- I love the Prado (second visit) and the Madrid Vision bus: Gibralter was interesting to see and be on the tip of Europe viewing Africa, the local buses in Gibralter were inexpensive saving your feet from walking and narrow streets
Worst: Morroco, trains
Why: Trains were good and bad- fast, but having to buy reservations across Europe added hundreds of dollars to saver pass, time in lines, and time restraints. Morroco-because of poor scheduling, I didn't get in contact with Ahiz in time, who emailed me after we left Morrocco, met Abdul with Tourism board at dock who took us to an OK hotel by Port gate, (nice restaurant across the street, but not what Abdul recommended), an OK tour of old town including the expensive rug store, nice meal at Restauant de la Kasbah:BUT then he said we could have a nice tour in a van to specific cities the next day with an English speaking guide. The guide spoke NO English after we got in the CAR, refused to stop and call Abdul, then finally stopped away from town, said "No Abdul", drove on saw the Hercules caves-OK, drove us to another city not the city promised, made us walk long distance to a restaurant that charged 5 times what we paid the night before and no time for sightseeing, took us back to Tangier where he stopped before reaching the Port with our suitcases in the trunk making us pay the full amount even though he did not fulfill the promises and finally drove released us at the port so we missed the evening ferry by 5 minutes, waited 2 hours, got robbed and arrived to our next city in Spain too late at night to find accomdations- no vacancies and so we two women slept-no stayed awake in the park. Make sure you get Ahiz.

Why: Not worth the wait if you have been to any other palace
Pete Hall in Haddonfield, NJ USA 01/03/2010
Best: Sevilla Walking Tours - Concepcion Delgado
Why: We took each of her tours - Walking Tour of Sevilla, Cathedral and Alcazar - on separate days. By the end of the week we felt like we had made a true friend. Seeing Sevilla and these sights through Concepcion's eyes was a gift. I felt like we had been given little secrets of this city that I would not have learned otherwise. She made some great food recommendations as well! And sent us on our own treasure hunt searching for various Cervantes locations.
Worst: Eating
Why: Changing your eating schedule is maybe the hardest thing I have ever done. I was in Sevilla for a month and still wanted dinner at 7 when it was all said and done!
Virginia in Boston, MA USA 12/17/2009
Best: Las Ramblas; City Tour
Why: Exactly as described, educational, culturally wonderful and fun
Catherine in Edmonds, WA USA 12/15/2009
Worst: Picasso Museum
Why: I felt it was overrated with ***. What a waste of time and money! And several people visited the museum had the same feeling. Two * is fair enough.
Helen in Chicaogo, IL USA 12/14/2009
Best: Jerez
Why: As a wine lover I really enjoyed spending 2 nights in Jerez. I know Rick says to do this as a day trip, but it was a perfect place to stay since we did not have a car. It was an easy bus ride from Arcos (about 30 minutes) and there is train service to Sevilla. I really enjoyed taking tours of sherry bodegas. I knew little about sherry, but learned a lot and appreciate it more now. The Andalusian Equestrian School was also more interesting than I imagined.
Jim Perschbacher in Mableton, GA USA 12/06/2009
Best: La Alhambra in Granada
Why: The filigreed arches, reflecting pools, and inlaid wooden ceilings in Los Palacios Nasaries were magestic, yet serene and organically connected to the earth, and the Generalife Gardens were breathtaking. Also, Barcelona's Bus Turistic tour was worth every penny, whereas the bus tour in Sevilla wasn't.
Worst: El Arenal Flamenco show in Sevilla
Why: Except for one male dancer, all the performers here were inferior to those at Los Gallos, and the fact that some patrons had dinner during the show was distracting. If I were you, I'd recommend Los Gallos more enthusiastically and El Arenal less highly.

Best: P 516 Andalusion Minibus Tour; P 360 Museo del Traje; P 535
Why: Paul McGrath knows the area and is happy to answer questions. He is flexible enough to take a detour if the group agrees. The tour is pretty great, too!
Museo del Traje in Madrid has a great permanent collection and nice special exhibits. The walk from Moncloa Metro isn't really far, but it requires navigating around/through a park.
Museo Palacio de la Condesa de Lebrija has an amazing collection of artifacts from nearby Italica. Take the tour of the upstairs to see her personal art collection including works by well-known painters.
Wendy in Washington , DC USA 11/04/2009
Best: Thyssen Museum - Madrid
Why: Amazing collection of art spanning centuries. The depth and breadth were remarkable.
Worst: Sagruda Familia and Barcelona in general
Why: The church is a big zero--hard to see any of the details from where you have to stand and the inside is an empty construction zone. Barcelona itself is way over-hyped, worthy of maybe one day. Disappointing.

Why: Guide book calls it "little-visited" but the Sunday we were there it was hopping and alive with strollers along the harbor and an outdoor market. A nice surprise!
Sharon in Anaheim, CA United States 10/28/2009
Best: Alhambra, Granada
Why: Quite simply the best sight I have ever visited (perhaps two or three others in Europe tie with it) The whole sight is phenomenal but the hospitality, chairs and benches everywhere, water fountains in abundance, lack of commercial pressure once we were inside, the setting, the gardens, the story, the designs, the uses of water...we spent five glorious hours there and will remember it forever. By the way, when we visiteds the Alcazar in Sevilla the next day we expected to be disappointed after the Alhambra experience, but the Alcazar is very, very good by itself.
Worst: None
Why: We enjoyed everything we visted in Spain recommended by RS and could include the Prado, the Sevilla Cathedral and Bullring Museum and the Granada Royal Chapel as outstanding also.
George in Pittsburgh, PA USA 10/10/2009
Best: Ronda, Toledo, Sevilla, Barcelona
Why: These cities were diverse and exciting. The peole were wonderful and the sights were all outstanding. Toledo is special after dark.
Worst: Madrid
Why: The Prado was great as was the Palace. The city its self was kind of boring. I was put off by all the pedestrain walk ways as they were covered in grafitti.
Hank Smalling in Aiken, SC USA 10/09/2009
Best: The walking tour of Seville
Why: I would never have wandered around as much or learned as much as I did with Alfonso. He was articulate, well-versed in Seville and Spain's history plus he has a great sense of humor. It made all of the difference in enjoying Seville.
Worst: I found tapas to be disappointing.
Why: This is certainly no one's fault, I'm just not that into the tapas that I tried. I found that they tended to be more fatty and fried than I like.
Jean Brubeck in Santa Cruz, CA USA 10/06/2009
Best: Toledo
Why: So glad Rick recommends to stay the night. We stayed two and were still sad to leave. Rick recommends wandering at night after the tourists go home - this was the best. We had lots of wine and Estrella, got lost in the little streets and barely saw a soul!
Worst: Las Ramblas, Barcelona
Why: Rick is right: Crazy, crowded, loud, cheap.
Cheryl Collins in Seattle, WA USA 10/04/2009
Best: The Alhambra at night
Why: Stunning. Breathtaking. We were able to get tickets ahead of time using the information in your book. As always, it saved us time and money.

Best: Stephen Drake-Jones -- Madrid Pub Crawl, p 306.
Why: The man is charming and informative. We learned all about the Habsburgs and enjoyed the best tapas and wine on our trip. His wife, Connie, an expert on the wines of the region put us onto some delicious Rojas. We had fun. He's a brilliant story teller. Our best time in Spain.
Worst: A bad dinner at a Jerez bar
Why: Overdone macaroni in canned tomato sauce--billed as fresh--covered with a semi-melted slice of packaged cheese.
Roy and Barbara Glassberg in Ashland, OR USA 09/21/2009
Best: White Hill Towns
Why: They were amazing. Nice to get out of the touristy areas of the bigger cities. Ronda was my favorite (we visited about 8).
Worst: Sevilla
Why: Hot, loud, touristy, and dirty city. Cathedral and Alcazar are great, but rest of city is boring. I ran out of interesting things to see in about 6 hours. Only spend half a day there and jet over to Cordoba (Mezquita is great) and/or Granada (the Alhambra is to die for).
Sam in Hansen, UT USA 08/23/2009
Best: Tour of Frigiliana with David Riordan
Why: This was an incredible personable experience with a very knowledgeable and fun tour guide who knew the history and was able to relate it to adults, but also a 5- and a 16-year olds... The history of this little white village was coming alive as all the "Frigilianians" seem to know David and stop by. The walls, the plaques, the names of the streets, the little shops and the big ideas--it was all incorporated with very much alive tour of history of Frigiliana.

Why: It was better than I expected, and it was the reason I came to Barcelona, so I had very high expectations. So beautiful and fun! (And free!)

Why: It was expensive (9.50 euros admission) and not what I love about Modernisme. No color! The roof was nice but not worth the money.

Best: Morocco with Aziz
Why: We made internet reservations with Aziz out of your guide book. He not only paid for our reservations on the ferry and emailed the reservation number, (which we reimbursed after the tour), but he met us at the terminal and took us all over the place, everyone knows him, we didn't get bothered by vendors, we got to see things that were unique to him. The History was fabulous and he was so personable. We recommend him to anyone wanting to see Morocco.

Best: La Mesquita-Cordoba
Why: Absolutely breathtaking...and a refreshment from typical European cathedrals
Worst: Guided Walk by Concepcion-Sevilla
Why: It seemed like she was just reading out of your book by memory. Tell people not to waste their money on her. (And don't ask questions either; she's very rude.)
Bryan in Seattle, WA USA 08/01/2009
Best: The suggested walk from Sol to Palacio
Why: It gave the flavor of the city in an easy walk where you could stray a little into the surrounding streets, and then come back and pick it up again. I came to Madrid spur of the moment on a business task, so had no time to plan ahead. This stroll was simple to follow and not too strenuous for someone who hadn´t "trained" for more. Note that I never found the convent door with the note about them selling sweets. Had planned to purchase some, but not that big a deal to miss it.

Why: It is a beautiful town with nice beaches. A stronger sugguestion to stay a day or two. Alborada Hostal was great very nice staff, very clean and helpful.
Worst: Tangier
Why: I would have like more information about the guides\tour groups i.e. do they allow free time to shop and a good varity of shops. I was running the gaunltant of unrelenting street venders it was as trechrous as San Fermin.

Best: Sevilla Walking Tours with Concepcion and the Andalusion Minibus tours with Paul McGrath
Why: The Sevilla walking tours with Concepcion were worth our time and the fees. We did the city walk, cathedral and Alcazar tours and each helped us get a better understanding of the history of Sevilla. She is a very good tour guide. We also took the Andalusian minibus tour with Paul McGrath and a group of 6 other Americans and it was very enjoyable and beautiful. The White Hill Towns of southern Spain are worth the day's adventure. For a flamenco show- Casa de la Memoria de Al-Andalus put on a very good show. The first show sold out but we were able to get seats for the 10:30 PM seating. There is limited seating and it is first come first serve so get in line early (also no air conditioning). The show was excellent, very talented performers. Also the Santa Cruz is touristy but a very nice place to walk through and find somewhere to eat while the rest of Sevilla is taking the afternoon siesta. These experiences are why I keep using RS guidebooks for my trips to Europe!
We also went ot Santiago de Compostela-a very nice change after the heat of Sevilla! Great place to walk and pilgraim watch. We attended mass 2 times and got to see the swinging botafumeiro! The cathedral is beautiful, it and the setting makes it worth the side trip to this NW part of Spain. Thanks for pointing out the view from the Alameda Park, the produce and fish market and seeing and hearing the nuns at St Pelayo Monastery sing evening vespers- we enjoy doing the freebies that the RS guide books point out!
Monica in Chapel Hill, NC USA 07/03/2009
Best: Casa Mila (La Pedrera) and the Metro system
Why: The audio tour & attic section were excellent. It went into detail about Gaudi's genius so we felt we really appreciated what we saw later which included the Sagrada Familia. Would encourage everyone to do this sight before the church. As for the metro, it is easy to use, inexpensive, and clean. Don't be nervous using it!
Worst: Parc Guell
Why: Maybe we were tired by the time we got there, or maybe the Casa Mila and the Sagrada Familia (which we had done already that day) were just so interesting that we didn't really appreciate this park. It did have a nice view of the city, but that was about it. Plus, don't let your husband talk you into walking there from the Sagrada Familia...it is ALL uphill :) Take a cheap taxi!
Amy Teague in Fishers, IN USA 06/08/2009
Best: Flamenco in Sevilla
Why: Shows at both Los Gallos and Casa de la Memoria were as good as advertised and gave us the best feeling of Spanish culture during the trip. The tapas crawl in Madrid was a close second.

Best: Sagrada Familia
Why: We have never seen a cathedral "in process".
Worst: Las Rambals
Why: Just like the book says - very touristy. Does it warrant a 3 star while the Palau Musica gets no mention?
Stephanie in Brinkerhoff, MI USA 05/18/2009
Best: San Sebastian
Why: Great city, and gorgeous views along the ocean.
Worst: La Rambla in Barcelona
Why: After a few walks, I definitely stayed away from La Rambla - very trashy, touristy, junky and too crowded. Avoid that whole road.
spainfan in Washington, DC USA 05/08/2009
Best: Easter week processions in Seville
Why: They provided an interesting cultural comparison of the floats to those used in Fukuoka, Japan's summer festival. "Living" in the Barrio Santa Cruz provided easy access to all the places we wanted to see and all the food we enjoyed.
Worst: Driving in to our hotel in Madrid (from Granada)
Why: Maps and signs proved insufficient to keep us from an hour or so of wasted time on the freeways.
Gerald L. Rose in Iowa City, IA USA 04/30/2009
Best: Toledo Cathedral
Why: Excellent description in the book and we agree "Holy Toledo!"
Bill in Williston, VT USA 04/27/2009
Best: Casa Mila
Why: Wildly interesting and entertaining to anyone with even a modest interest in design or architecture. Great exhibits on Gaudi's life, and the free extended audio tour is terrific.
Worst: Picasso Museum
Why: Why is this museum so popular? It has relatively little of the art of which Picasso is famous for (it's more a chronology of the changes in his painting styles as he matured as an artist). Sure, it's a worthwhile stop, but if I hadn't seen it as part of my artticket, I would have felt completely ripped off.
Dave in Philadelphia, PA USA 03/31/2009
Best: Segovia
Why: The town is not too large and there are lots of photo ops: Snow-capped mountains in the distance, Roman Aquaduct, Medieval Castle with walls, Beautiful Cathedral, and a lovely plaza to loaf in at lunchtime. It is a great daytrip from Madrid. The high speed train from Madrid gets you there quickly too.
Worst: Churros
Why: I can't say that your book actually RECOMMENDS churros and chocolate but they are definitely miss-able.
Cliff Gilbert in Mount Laurel, NJ USA 03/31/2009
Best: Alcazar Seville
Why: If this is two stars then you obviously did not see the garden.

Why: Mostly we loved walking around Madrid, but the Temple de Debod was great. The Santa Cruz museum in Toledo finally gave me an appreciation for El Greco's work, plus it was free. All of Segovia was fun! We walked to the end of the aqueduct, and that was a highlight.

Best: SEGOVIA
Why: Segovia offers all of the Spain "must sees." Cathedral, castle, museums, lots of pedestrian areas, plazas, wonderful food, PLUS the amazing Roman aqueduct.

Best: Casa de la Memoria de Al-Andalus, Sevilla
Why: RIGHT next to my hotel (Alcantara) and a true flamenco show. I watched flamenco in Madrid and you could definitely tell the difference between the two cities.
