Peter Thompson in Charlottesville, va USA 09/20/2009
Best: The Fox Inn - Lower Oddington, Cotswolds
Why: We were definitely the only tourists in this cozy, delightful pub. It had a relaxed, friendly atmosphere full of locals and we had delicious food and great service!
Worst: The Haunch of Venison, Salisbury
Why: The service was extremely slow and unfriendly. The food wasn't bad, but we had waited so long for it that we felt cheated, and the waitress was utterly disinterested.
Reya in Carson City, NV USA 09/01/2009
Best: Kronos Opera House Tea Room and Pret a Manger
Why: Kronos (am I remembering the name right) was in a great location (Trafalgar Square), we had great service, and the food and seating were good. Pret was convenient, inexpensive, well-located, and delicious.
Antje in Portland, OR USA 08/20/2009
Best: Tilly's in Bath
Why: Excellent food, locally owned. I don't know if it is listed in the book, but it is just around the corner from Three Abbey Green.
Maria Shuman in Boulder, , CO USA 08/10/2009
Best: The Queen's Head - Stow
Why: Extremely entertaining bar staff and clientele, all of whom have been living a sort of Cotswolds version of 'Cheers' for who knows how long.... People bring their dogs, kids, and whomever else they find on Market Square, and sit on the back patio. Great beer, real circus.
Jim in Rockville, MD USA 07/30/2009
Best: Jenny Lo's Teahouse in London
Why: Small menu, reasonably priced, good food. We loved the crispy seaweed.
Anne Ayre in Bowen Island, BC Canada 07/19/2009
Best: St. Martin-in-the-Fields Cafe in the Crypt
Why: We ate here on Wednesday night so we had dinner and then stayed for the jazz concert. It was an unexpected delight. The food was fine but the concert was great. They had a Latin jazz band playing which we really enjoyed but they also had salsa and cha-cha dancing lessons off to the side during the concert so I learned some dance steps with complete strangers while my husband enjoyed the music. Great fun!
Philomena Karol in Raleigh, NC USA 07/14/2009
Best: The Red Lion Pub in Avebury
Why: The fish and chips were good and the location was great.
Mike Flaherty in St Louis, MO USA 06/13/2009
Best:
Why: I ate quite a bit of pub grub, very yummy and afforable, visited the Marks and Spencer in a few different locations and just kind of went with what looked good.
Paul DiBlasi in Jacksonville Beach, Fl USA 05/27/2009
Worst: petit dejune at Chateau et Hotel Beynac
Why: It was a quarter as elegant as Benoit's (above) at four times the price. My main complaint is the inelegance. an easy fix. The food was not that bad Yes helpful. Maybe I am cranky because my GPS unit took me for a joyride. I used to call her Wanda, because she Wanded all around but not I call her Mary, for the very same reason. Mary go round.
David Bean in Portland, Or USA 05/22/2009
Best: Kymalton House (Moreton-in-Marsh)
Why: Good price, clean room, excellent English breakfast - kept us full all day! (Map with footpath is now inaccurate, however).
Dave W. in Seattle, WA USA 01/20/2009
Best: Lygon Arms Pub, Chipping Campden
Why: Warm, friendly helpful staff and very tasty food. Everything you think an English pub should be. We were there on a snowy evening, sitting by the fire. We went back three times. And Sandra, the manager/owner, went out of her way to help us with an airline issue.
Judy Hopwood in Alpine, CA USA 11/13/2008
Best: Pubs, esp. in the country / W Cornwall Pasty Co (see below)
Why: Food was uniformly excellent (as advertised by Steve's!) and much, much cheaper than city restaurants I can't recall if you recommended the West Cornwall Pasty Company, but we ate there all over the SW. We even saw a girl server in Bath who had worked the previous day in another city we ate at! Food was hot, fresh and had quality ingredients, and you can carry it, eat and enjoy sights at the same time.
LTC Larry Frost in Minneapolis, MN USA 10/14/2008
Best: Morrel's, Keswick
Why: great place to celebrate - good food and service
Verna Reamy in Columbia, MD USA 09/26/2008
Worst: Lord Moon of the Mall - Whitehall
Why: We had an unpleasant dining experience at this pub. We stopped in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon around 2:00. The place was in disarray with dirty dishes piled everywhere on tables and on the bars. The staff made only feeble attempts to clear them away. The food took a half-hour to arrive and was only passable. The bar staff did not seem knowledgeable about the beers they were pouring and could only recommend the Heineken! Imagine that in a British pub. One of the bar staff insisted on arguing with my wife about giving her the bag of chips we had already purchased until a manager stepped in.
Vince Cook in Mission Viejo, Ca USA 08/23/2008
Best: La Scala, Dover
Why: What an easy and wonderful find La Scala was. The owner was Italian and chatted with us for quite a while. He was accommodating when we asked about items on the menu and served the best food of our entire trip! (Italian beats English every time!)
Worst: Munchikins, in London near the British Museum
Why: This is not in your guidebook, but it is very convenient to the British Museum. It was raining and the fire alarm had just cleared the museum for an hour. We ducked in, ate muck, and headed back to the museum. They're French trying to do British food. Nice people, though.
Patti Brugman in Pasadena, CA USA 06/29/2008
Best: Eight Bells, Chipping Campden, Cotswolds
Why: Beautiful pub with great atmosphere. The food was delicious and the grainary bread served with our dinner was addictive! The bartender was very friendly. I would definitely return!
Deb Nilson in West Suffield, CT USA 05/22/2008
Best: Elephant House, Edinburgh Scotland
Why: A great place for a spot of tea after sightseeing on the Royal Mile and because that's where JK Rowling ate!
Mark in Durham, NC USA 04/29/2008
Best: Belgian Beer Cafe, London
Why: Fun atmosphere, reasonable prices (by NZ standards with our very tough exchange rate!), good food in hearty helpings and smiling staff.
Worst: Heathrow
Why: Don't do it if you can help it! Very ordinary food at extraordinary prices!
June Williams in Auckland, New Zealand 11/08/2007
Best: St. Martins-in-the-Field & Tescos
Why: St. Martins has traditional food and is open long hours. The location is so handy right by Trafalgar Square. Tescos (in Slough) was one of the super-stores. The cafeteria there served up good food and had very reasonable prices--I had steak and ale pie plus peas and chips for 5 GBP.
Swan in Napa, CA USA 10/29/2007
Worst: Dirty Duck in Stratford-upon-Avon
Why: The cuts of meat were just not the best and they overcooked it....I found out later from locals that its best for desserts. Which I did find to be true! It is better for after theatre not before! So don't go for dinner unless its the best cakes, puddings and other desserts that you are wanting.
Leslie Hickman in Tulsa, OK USA 10/19/2007
Best: Moti Mahal Indian Restaurant London
Why: Very good food served with care and the best value in London.
Worst: The Prince Edward Bayswater
Why: Old English rudeness, Poor food, poor service uncomfortable.
Bill Ith in Olympia, WA USA 10/03/2007
Best: The King's Head Inn, Salisbury
Why: We staggered into the King's Head Inn after a long day of train rides and touring Stonehenge. The prices were excellent. We got two meals and drinks for 9.59 pounds. The portions were good and the quality was great! It was exactly the breather we needed before catching another train to London.
Alison Carter in Arkadelphia, AR USA 08/21/2007
Best: Tilleys in Bath, Boxers in Wells and the Jugged Hare in London
Why: We had been to Tilleys and the Jugged Hare previously and returned to both. Excellent again. Boxers was new and was excellent and very reasonably priced.
S Haggarty in Peterborough, on Canada 06/11/2007
Best: The Bear Pub in Oxford
Why: An old pub around since 1262. Not only was it recommended by Rick but when we asked a local the best place to eat they recommended the Bear to us as well. If the locals recommend it, you know its got to be good. The food was great pub fare and the atmosphere was AWESOME
Nathalie Carette-Meyers in Tacoma, wa USA 04/30/2007
Best: Y Ming Chinese Restaurant
Why: We were not execting much for good food in London but were surprised how good this restaurant was. Price was not as low as you mentioned in the book but it was around 6pm and could have been past pre-theatre meal deal time.
