Greece: Athens & the Peloponnese Guidebook

Best and worst sights, experiences and destinations:

Best: Rick' walking tour
Why: As always, they are concise, interesting and fun!

Worst: Effie tour guide
Why: Overpriced and underwhelming - she seemed bored, with a " been there, done that, blah, blah" approach.

Tom USA 12/05/2011

Best: Mama's House restaurant
Why: Extremely friendly and great food and lots of it.

Robert Teagardin in Vashon, WA USA 10/28/2011

Best: Acropolis.
Why: The history and architecture are unrivaled. We especially loved that it was lighted at night.

Cheryl Weir in Vancouver, WA USA 08/19/2011

Best: Hydra
Why: So clean. Great beaches. We could have stayed the two weeks in Hydra.

Jan Grantham in Redding, CA USA 07/26/2011

Best: Eating in Athens at your favourite dining room the Strofi Athenian Restaurant.
Why: Eating in Athens are your favourite dining room, the Strofi Athenian Restaurant with a fantastic view of the Acropolis, and you were right in saying good food at fair prices. we went to this restaurant on our last night in Athens and it was a highlight. The lamb was fabulous! and I love zucchini balls! thank you.

Worst: Part 3 map - Athens City Walking Tour
Why: see above.

Brenda Compton in Kingston, On Canada 06/23/2011

Best: Archeological sites in Delphi
Why: the lighting was magnificent for great photos, plus the feel of the place was authentic, since it was laid out so that you didn't run into hordes of tourists, they were strung out.

Kip Freytag in Shingle Springs, CA USA 06/06/2011

Best: Kardamyli/Kastania
Why: Scenery, Staying at Gorgones Pension, or Inn, or whatever you call it, Kastania, Wild Flowers

Worst: Athens, but still not terrible.
Why: We were only there long enough to see the Acropolis, but the traffic, crowds, and seeing a lady get her purse snatched.

Dave Kendle in Lincoln, NE USA 04/14/2011

Worst: Hydra
Why: Hydra did not impress. Aside from the quaint donkey transport, it is a fairly touristy town, overrun with cats.

Joan Barnes in Portland, OR USA 04/01/2011

Best: The Acropolis, National Archeaological Museum and Ancient Agora
Why: It was the first experience of our honeymoon. You had recommended going to the Acropolis in the evening and we couldn't wait for this to be the FIRST thing we saw on our honeymoon! We were in awe! It's gorgeous and utterly unfathomable! Ancient Agora was like icing on the cake. The National Museum was huge but pretty interesting. It was early and we were soaking up all things ancient!

Shannon Fonferko in Schaumburg, IL USA 03/20/2011

Best: Acropolis/Olympia
Why: Acropolis defies description. Olympia was the best connection with the current world.

James Baudhuin in New Berlin, WI USA 10/14/2010

Best: Staying for three nights on Hydra
Why: It gave us the time to do the walks listed in the booklet Walking Paths of Hydra. Dinner at Gitonika where Christina took our order both nights we ate there, her dolmadas and stuffed tomatoes were delectable. Sunset dinner at Kodylenia's Taverna in Kaminia was out of this world!

Ellie Stratton in Devault, PA USA 09/30/2010

Best: Nafplio
Why: A lovely city, with lots of easy side trips.

Worst: Hydra
Why: Beaches are terrible, there's not much to do, and ferries to/from the island are erratic at best. Ermioni (where we waited for 5 hours for the boat to Hydra) is nicer.

Bronwyn in Seattle, WA USA 09/03/2010

Best: Faye Georgiou and Panos
Why: Faye tied all the ancient history together for us in an entertaining, yet highly intellectual package. She was multi-dimensional, cared about our interests, and utterly indefatigable. She made our trip to Greece come alive. she helped us plan our trip to the Peloponnese, and importantly, brought us in contact with her driver, Panos, who is the most honest, reasonable and caring cab driver in Athens. He provides perfect service from the airport to your hotel, along with an illuminating discussion of Athens as you ride to and fro.

Keith and Madge Bauer bauer in Salem , OR USA 07/12/2010

Best: the Parthenon
Why: Rick's book was the only one to explain exactly how the Parthenon was built to counteract the optical illusions created in such a massive structure. The columns also turn slightly inward which is perhaps why the Parthenon has been able to withstand earthquakes and explosions for 2,000 years.

Penny Nuse in Concord, MA USA 07/07/2010

Best: Hydra
Why: Beauty and quiet atmosphere. Also great walking paths.

ernie ooms in calgary, al canada 06/16/2010

Best: Nafplio
Why: Very beautiful and unique town.

Mark in Bloomington, MN USA 05/07/2010

Best: Hotel Phaedra, Athens
Why: Stayed for three nights last month. Great location, helpful staff, room with balcony, inexpensive, Spartan but clean. Was as billed in your guidebook.

David W. Allen in La Grande, OR USA 05/06/2010

Best: Besides the Acropolis, definitely the Acropolis museum
Why: It really helped picture what the Parthenon must have looked like back in it's glory days.

Angie USA 01/02/2010

Worst: Two nights in Delphi
Why: Very tiny boring town and the sites only took half a day. I could have easily done them the afternoon I arrived and left the next morning. The entire second day was by far the most boring time I've spent in Greece

Davy Davis in Denver, CO USA 10/09/2009

Best: Olympia
Why: well laid-out information. Museum and archaeological site were great.

Worst: Hop In Tours, Athens
Why: see above breach of contract. We paid for a 4 hour tour, and received a poorly-conducted 2 hour tour. Used our guidebook to see the Acropolis on our own, and the Agora, and Mars Hill.

Gloria Hasler in Palmdale, CA USA 08/27/2009

Best: The New Acropolis Museum
Why: Despite missing those infamous Elgin Marbles on the Parthenon level, this was one of our favorite, favorite, favorite museums. The museum is extremely well done, with an excellent floor plan, and we got in for 1 euro/person. (This admission price is good until the end of the year, 2009.) Also, the short movie on the Parthenon, alternating in Greek and English, is fabulous.
