Mediterranean Cruise Ports

Guidebook corrections:

Please note: The following corrections were submitted by readers and have not yet been confirmed by Rick. Check updates from Rick for the latest.

This is not a correction, but a suggestion for future cruise port books. We stopped in Palma deMallorca, Valencia, Malaga, and Olbia, Sardinia which were not mentioned in the book. Perhaps future editions could cover some additional ports.

Had instructions to Pompeii from Naples, but we docked in Salerno. We figured out how to get there, but really missed having it laid out for us, and would love to see this addition.

We purchase the guide book that was just release in Sept 2012 so we thought that it would be accurate but the prices on all activities and transportation were consistently higher that what was listed in the book. We thought this would have been updated since it was printed just a month ago but it seemed like we were reading an old copy.

we did a Mediterranean cruise in mid-May. the guide book was a great help. one thing that we were unable to do was get a hydrofoil from Sorrento to the port of Naples. We would have to go to Capri first and get one there, and didn't have the time for the extra stop.

Barcelona suggestion - we were not able to purchase tickets to La Sagrada Familia in advance from the US. Our hotel recommended we go to the corner bank nex to McDonalds across the street from La Sagrada Familia, and purchase tickets that morning from the ATM machine outside the bank that also sells event tickets. The staff at LSF said that although the bank sells tickets to LSF for specific times, those times don't matter. You just purchase your ticket for any time available that day and bring it to the front of the line to get in. You still need to get there in the morning to purchase them or all the tickets could already be sold from the ATM. Then, you would have to stand in the long line that circles the church. Hope this is helpful.

The Corfu Archaeological Museum, page 1026, will be closed from May 2012 until summer 2015 due to renovation works. See http://odysseus.culture.gr/h/1/eh155.jsp?obj_id=3420

Prices were sometimes higher, but that is a moving target

We had great difficulty following the instructions to walk from the arrival area in Toulon to the town market square (see page 214 in First Edition). It's described as an easy 5-10 minute walk. Well, it took us more like 25-30 minutes. We could not find anything like the landmarks described, and ended up walking along a road parallel to the waterfront until we reached what appeared to be the town center, adjacent to a small craft harbor. As a result of the delay and confusion, we were not able to catch a planned train to Marseilles and decided to stay in Toulon. We enjoyed our time in town, discovering a fascinating two-block long food and flower market, where we assembled an excellent picnic lunch. One clue to the confusion: we saw signs suggesting we were in the town of La Seyne. Maybe we misread them, or that's another name for the Toulon port area. But I wonder if our ship docked somewhere different than the area you described.

Would like to have an address for the Murano Glassblowing outlet included. We went around and around asking people and no-one knew where the one mentioned was.

Minor point, but the pictures for the Church of Kapnikarea and the Cathedral (Athens, pages 900 and 901) should be switched.

No, it was very accurate and enabled us to make the maximum use of our time and money. Since it was my first cruise and first visit to Italy, I hesitated to make reservations in advance as you suggested and can certainly see now that that would have helped a lot.
