Paris 2012 Guidebook
Best and worst accommodations:
Best: Hotel Relais Bosquet
Why: It was great to be in a real Paris neighborhood, near the Cler Market. The staff was wonderful, gave the 10% discount after arrival (and on top of already fair rates); breakfast was lovely, the room quite comfortable, dark and quiet.
Gina in Ellicott City, MD USA 02/01/2012
Best: Marais Walk
Why: It's such a lovely area. So many delightful discoveries as you make your way thru this jem of a neighborhood.
Helen in San Francisco, CA USA 01/11/2012
Best: Hotel Champ de Mars
Why: We love this hotel. Have stayed there many times over 12 years. The price is so reasonable for Paris. We were just there in October and November of 2011 and they have new bathrooms, new carpet , new wallcoverings, and new matresses. The breakfast is very reasonable and good. We are very fond of the Gourdals and really would not stay anywhere else.
Jane Davis in Lebanon, Oh USA 11/23/2011
Best: Hotel Relais de Medicis
Why: We used this Rick hotel 2+ years ago and again last week. The stay was just as pleasant now as it was then. Terrific location, helpful staff (although Isabelle is no longer with the hotel), and breakfast included, which is a nice touch.
Cindy in Beavercreek, OH USA 11/03/2011
Best: Hotel Turenne
Why: Humberto, the day clerk: vey helpful and friendly. Any question as to where to go or when and he can arrange all the minute details for you. The hotel was clean and tidy and the staff was superb, day or night. This little gen is close to everything that you would readily need, and all the major sights are within easy reach or by Metro. Great location and great rates.
Vicente in Melrose Park, IL USA 11/01/2011
Worst: Hotel Academie St. Germain
Why: It was okay, probably good compared to other Paris hotels...but no amenities, like coffee & tea in lobby, reading materials. Help were friendly, but manager stone-faced. At any rate, great location!
wayne white in walnut creek, ca USA 10/26/2011
Best: Hotel Du Champs De Mars
Why: Great little reasonably priced hotel. The staff was so helpful from allowing us to use the laptop to checkout flights plans to keeping our macarons in the refrigerator. We stayed on the 4th fl in the lavender room. Great view of Rue Cler and the Eiffel Tower. We were so pleased with the hotel that we even recommended it to a gate agent in NY when were arrived back in the US.
Rose Kenney in Tewksbury, MA USA 10/23/2011
Best: 29 Rue Cler: hotel levesque
Why: small, pricey but great area. in future will find hotels in DuMarais which seemed more lively and more suited to me.
Mark in Victoria, bc canada 09/25/2011
Best: N/A
Why: Like I said, I didn't use a recommended accommodation and deeply regretted it. I really wanted air conditioning since I went in August, and a lot of Rick's recommended 2- and 3-star hotels didn't have it.
Katherine in Hutchison, IL USA 09/03/2011
Worst: Hotel du Champ de Mars
Why: I think this place is getting "too big for its britches", thanks to Rick. I would like to make a reservation for next May (I KNOW that's a long way off, but I've heard you have to book months in advance), but I cannot get them to respond in any way shape or form, even when I write in French (I'm fluent). Can't they take one minute to let me know SOMEthing? (start the process in January, etc.) They just ignore me. I guess they're too busy now, thanks to Rick.
trudy in San Antonio, TX USA 09/03/2011
Worst: Grand Hotel Leveque
Why: An American friend and her husband own a B&B in Normandy and when I told her I was considering GHL for our next vacation (since Hotel du Champ de Mars won't respond to me), she said "Beware. The last time I stayed there they charged me 10 euros more than they were supposed to.) She is a true francophile, having lived in Normandy for over 10 years, so she knew what she was doing. I think GHL, like Hotel du Champ de Mars, think they don't have to "try" anymore because they've got it made - thanks mostly to Rick and his books.
trudy in San Antonio, TX USA 09/03/2011
Worst: Hotel du Champ de Mars
Why: I think this hotel may be getting "too big for its britches", thanks to Rick. I have requested info on their rooms 4 times and received no reply (the difference between a double and superior double). I've even written my requests in French, as I speak French fluently. And then I asked the simple question in one email, "When can I make a reservation for 11 nights next May?" I gave the exact dates. I KNOW it's a long way off, but I also know how quickly these rue Cler hotels book up. No response. Couldn't they take 1 minute to reply something? So then, thinking I was doing something wrong on the computer, I pretended to want a room for 5 nights in Oct. I did get a very polite response to that - they were totally full! I guess they know how popular they are now, so they're not going to waste a second on me and my questions.
trudy in San Antonio, TX USA 09/03/2011
Best: Hotel de Londres Eiffel
Why: Loved the location near the Tour Eiffel and the Seine. However they appear to offer a free breakfast now. My confirmation listed breakfast on request for 24 euros.
Arlene Brumm in Mukilteo, WA USA 07/26/2011
Worst: Alcove & Agapes B&B
Why: We stayed at one of the Alcove & Agapes B&B just over a month ago. We were there for a week. We stayed at property numbers 124 & 125 with Claudine. It looked lovely on the website and we read numerous glowing reviews which raved about the TV, free WiFi, etc. Our stay was not pleasant at all, to say the very least. 1. It was far too overpriced for what we were paying. We paid $243 US per night. Perhaps if the cost had been half of that, it may, just may, have been worth it. 2. We never felt welcome. In fact, we were in a hurry to leave there in the mornings and not return until very late at night, even though we have 2 children. It was quite obvious that Claudine did not like us to be there. That's the problem it seems with Parisian B&Bs. There really is no privacy. This has not been our experience with B&Bs in the UK or in the US. 3. The breakfasts were extremely minimal and she was very, very cheap. Each person was allowed 2 very small pieces of bread and it would not fill any of us up not even the kids. The juice (only one type offered) was foul. The breakfasts were not at all as shown in the pictures and described on the website. They were very sub-standard. The site says that we were to receive flaky croissants that she would warm for us each morning. There was none of that. http://www.bed-and-breakfast-in-paris.com/Dicillin.php?
Negin in St Georges, Grenada 07/25/2011
Best: Hotel Lyon Mulhouse
Why: We did not have much time to prepare since this trip was a last minute decision. There were not many choices left with only 6 weeks to make reservations. It was adequate and just as Rick said it would be. If Rick recommends them, you know they'll be booked quickly.
Bonnie Crabtree in Nesbit, MS USA 06/28/2011
Best: Hotel de l"Empereur
Why: Great location near Metro and Velib stations.
Linda in San Antonio, TX USA 06/19/2011
Best: Hotel Royal Phare
Why: This is only a two star hotel, but we were pleasantly surprised. The breakfast was fine- It was no more expensive than eating at a cafe with a bigger choice and more convenient. We had a room on the street side with big french doors- we had a great time each evening drinking wine and watching the scene below. A great location near rue Cler and the metro. We recommend it for a budget stay.
Laura in Fredericksburg, TX USA 06/16/2011
Best: Port-Royal-Hotel, 8 Blvd. Port Royal, Metro Les Gobelins
Why: 1- Most importamt = They HAD a room (every place else was filled). 2 = The room was small but VERY clean w/a nice bathroom (Opened onto the courtyard. Might be impossibly hot in summer.) 3 = introduced us to the Gobelins neighborhood which we liked a lot. THANKS for the recommendation!
Consuelo Larrabee in Seattle, WA USA 05/30/2011
Best: Alcove & Agapes B&B #368
Why: "Alcove & Agapes" web-site (bed-and-breakfast-in-paris.com) is THE BEST accommodation web-site we have ever used. Through it, we arranged the perfect lodging for our 2-week stay in Paris (B&B # 368; Chantal & Joe). We highly recommend this B&B service.
Marlene & Dave in Fort Collins, CO USA 05/18/2011
Best: The Hotel Hospitel in Paris
Why: Good price, good location, and very helpful people.
Frank Swigon in San Antonio, TX USA 05/06/2011
Best: Relais Bosquet
Why: Great helpful staff, clean larger than usual rooms and great breakfast. Also the location with Rue Cler being one block away is great. Shops, restarants and markets are just a short walk away.
Sherri Steffy in Eureka, mt USA 05/05/2011
Best: Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc
Why: Stayed 5 nights in April and were very pleased. Wonderful location in the Marais, friendly, helpful staff. Free Wi-Fi was nice, but had to be used on the ground floor. We had a triple, and the room was good sized, but the bathroom was small. It's hard to get into so reserve months in advance.
Judy Johnson in Alexandria, MN USA 04/25/2011
Worst: Hotel de Turenne
Why: Recently spent two separate stays at Hotel Turenne. Good value but needs to be careful about its upkeep. We stayed in room 52 for our first four nights. Being on the building front allowed road noise but it was lessened by being five stories up. Shower and room were clean but there was only one electric plug, which created a sight problem for me because of my breathing machine. We returned a few days later to room 12. More noise than before and an extremely dirty rug. Might not have returned if we stayed in room 12 at first.
Staff courteous and friendly each time. Location near Rue Cler, Ecole Militare metro and the Eiffel Tour proved advantageous. The lobby area allowed relaxing with a supermarket(right around the corner) dinner or a bottle of wine.
Craig Morgan in Westmont, NJ USA 04/25/2011
Worst: Hotel de Turenne
Why: Requested an online reservation vis their website. Received no response but ever since I have been receiving French email spam from various non-related businesses daily. Contact by phone or fax, do not use their website.
Alan Dahl in Federal Way, WA USA 03/13/2011
Best: Hotel Eber Mars
Why: We had a wonderful 9-day stay at Hotel Eber Mars and would highly recommend it. Mr. Eber (a Kevin Spacey look-a-like whose English almost matched Kevin's) was exceptionally gracious and helpful, as were his employees. Our room (41, on the courtyard) was surprisingly large and comfortable, as was the bathroom. Riding the one-man "coffin" elevator is a little like being rescued from a Chilean mine, so we opted for the winding staircase. That probably woudn't be for everybody, but we were delighted with our choice and very happy "reaching home" after exhilerating days exploring Paris.
Scott in Sammamish, WA USA 03/11/2011
Best: Hotel Motte Picquet
Why: Very friendly staff and great location right at the bottom of Rue Cler. Any street noise didn't bother me at all. I'd definitely stay here again.
Lance Teruya in Ewa Beach, HI USA 02/23/2011
Best: hotel cadran
Why: Very freindly staff. Saved my room after flight was cancelled. Great macarons in lobby. good location
kevin in san diego, ca USA 02/06/2011
Best: Hotel du Champ de Mars
Why: Very cute, quaint hotel, great price, very nice managers (the night assistants were nice but not all that helpful). Our flight was cancelled and rescheduled for 3 days later due to snow and they moved us into another room; we were thrilled to be able to stay in the same hotel.
Alison Snow in Bellevue, WA USA 01/28/2011
Best: VRBO
Why: We used VRBO, I can't say it's the best, but it worked for us! No bad experiences, got a great apartment in le Marais and a taste of that small-town, leaving your key with the cafe down the road and everything will be fine, feel and a great flat for an extended vacation.
Kali Morse in Ft. Campbell, KY USA 01/19/2011
Best: Vintage Hostel
Why: It wasn't recommended by the book, but by a website and I loved it. It's in the Montmarte area so that was a little sketchy, but the place was clean, nice workers, fun people and free breakfast included!
Chapel Ham in Bellville, TX USA 01/10/2011
Best: Relais Saint Sulpice
Why: My sixth trip to Europe and the first time we could not get a hotel in Rue Cler. Through some unplanned twists and turns we were able to book at Relais Saint Sulpice very near the Luxembourg Gardens. Au Revior Rue Cler. Clean, well appointed hotel but not stuffy or "over the top" luxury. Staff was great and best of all - location, location, location. Lots of very good to excellent restaurants within 3 blocks including the world class Girard Mulot Chcolats et Macarons with a small area to enjoy their coffee, quiche and croissants.
Scott Codon in Aliso Viejo, CA USA 12/14/2010
Best: MIJE hostels
Why: very clean and very safe hostel one block off the river seine. stayed here for one night and was pleased at how friendly the staff was, how safe it was, and how clean everything was; the bed was surprisingly comfortable too.
Tresa Hibben in Portland, or USA 11/16/2010
Best: Hotel du Champs des Mars
Why: Every one we met on the front desk (the Goutals as well as two men when the owners were not on site) was pleasant and helpful. The breakfast at 8 Euros is a good value, with fresh squeezed orange juice, Camembert cheese, baguettes, lemon cake, yogurt, fruit and the finest croissants ever! Hope I get back to Paris so I can return to the hotel. Loved their dog - described in the room information as "our adorable cocker Canelle" and indeed she is. The location is great and the price is unbeatable.
Chris in Cedar Point, NC USA 11/16/2010
Best: Hotel Muguet
Why: It's well maintained, not shop worn, well decorated, pleasant round-the-clock staff, free internet in the lobby; bathrooms are tiny but very attractive; close to Ecole Militaire Metro stop but on quiet side street-one block from Rue Cler.
Worst: Grand Hotel Leveque
Why: Spoke to multiple American tourists, while in the cafes on Rue Cler, who feel that this Hotel is no longer living up to acceptable standards and were disappointed with their facilities.
Sylvia in Grant, WI USA 10/15/2010
Best: Hotel Duquesne Eiffel
Why: Very clean, extremely helpful staff, great, quiet location, decent breakfast. Would stay there again.
Jennifer Brush in Cleveland, OH USA 10/06/2010
Worst: Novotel
Why: Not recommended by guide book, but wasn't that great. Frequent power outages and water shut offs, very expensive for a tiny room that was not that luxurious.
Kim in Rome, IL USA 10/04/2010
Best: Hotel Beaugency
Why: Rooms were clean, staff was fantastic and the location just as good as the Leveque where we stayed last year. We'll stay at the Beaugency again!
Dawn USA 09/20/2010
Best: Museum Pass and How to use the Metro
Why: We went into places we would never have gone with out the pass such as the Pompideo center and we got to avoid a lot of lines. tips to use the metro were right on. We even used the self service machine.
Terry in Virgina Beach, Va USA 09/18/2010
Best: Hotel Relais Bosquet
Why: During or 7 day stay at Hotel Relais Bosquet my husband became very ill with food poisoning. Frederica at the front desk contacted a doctor for us and my husband was eventually transported to the Georges Pompidou Hospital Emergency Room via ambulance.
We would like to thank the staff at the Relais Bosquet for their kindness & assistance. We enjoyed our stay (except for the sickness part); our room was clean and comfortable; breakfast was wonderful each morning; and the location was handy for all our sightseeing.
If you're looking to stay near the Eiffel Tower in the Rue Cler area, we highly recommend this hotel.
Susan in Port Orchard, WA USA 09/11/2010
Best: Hotel Lyon Mulhouse
Why: I stayed here in July 2010 with my two daughters (10 and 16). This was our first trip to Paris and the perfect accommodation choice for us. The location was perfect- central to bus/metro/hop on-hop off buses. Our room was spotless and charming. The staff were very kind and helpful. I would absolutely stay here again and highly recommend this accommodation!
JM in Vernon, BC Canada 08/22/2010
Best: Relais Bosquet Hotel
Why: Location and helpfulness of the staff. The free breakfast with Rick's guidebook mentioned (accepted readily by the staff) was a nice perk.
Jerry P in Minneapolis, MN USA 08/22/2010
Best: Hotel Champ de Mars
Why: Good location, cute rooms, fair price. Although others have complained that the staff are rude, we did not find this to be the case.

Best: Hotel Eber Mars
Why: This hotel was very clean and well maintained. The tiny elevaror was an experience in itself. The staff was very helpful and friendly, especially Mr. Eber. He told us how to take the city buses to the Marmottan Museum which is something we probably wouldn't have done on our own. Also he upgraded our room to a room with air conditioning for no additional cost.
Rich Swiergula in Aberdeen, WA USA 08/02/2010
Best: Hotel Tardif in Bayeux, Normandy
Why: House is beautifully adorned and while it is in the middle of town and you can walk everywhere, the garden keeps it quiet with a rural feel. Anthony is marvelous and helpful.
Trish Ellis in WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC USA 08/01/2010
Worst: Hotel Leveque, 29 Rue Cler, Paris.
Why: Hotel Leveque, 29 Rue Cler, Paris.
1. Hotel Leveque appears to be riding on its past reputation, not maintaining acceptable levels of cleanliness, service and apparently engaging in a petty scam. 2. The entrance was dirty. Specifically things like the rugs appeared worn out, dirty. 3. The two person elevator was dirty as were hall and room carpets with dog hair. 4. The bathroom in room 45 was so narrow that anyone over 5 could not sit on the commode and had to use the common bathroom down the hall. 5. The breakfast offering for 9 was below comparable hotels. A Rue Cler restaurant gave a full breakfast for 8. 6. On a warm Paris day, we asked for ice a. The desk person got a small metal container from the breakfast room with some ice and said to return the container or be charged 5. We returned the container the next morning. b. On the next three days, the same routine was followed, but a different desk person said just to keep the container until we checked out. c. Prior to check out, while paying the bill, we questioned a 5 charge on the bill, and were told that was a deposit for the ice container. d. In order not to make a scene, we went back to the room, got our luggage and returned the last container to the front desk as originally instructed. e. We asked that the 5 be removed from the bill. They refused saying that we should have returned the container prior to paying the bill. f. Attempting to avoid a scene, we reminded the desk manager that we had not yet checked out, this was not a fair business practice and a negative critique to Rick Steves and posted on the internet would cost the hotel a lot more than 5 since 80+% of their current business was from a Rick Steves recommendation. They refused to return the 5 deposit.
In our opinion, Hotel Leveque needs an updated evaluation and caution to maintain its property and services if it wishes to remain a Rick Steves recommendation.
Thanks for your continuing excellent work. George & Betty Torney

Best: Hotel Cluny Sorbonne
Why: Great location on the Rive Gauche. Reception staff friendly and helpful. Breakfast good value despite cramped room it is served in.
Worst: Grand Hotel Jeanne d'Arc
Why: Not so grand or lovely, in fact a disappointment in several regards. Our room #30 looked like the renovators forgot to put the light covers back up or paint area around the inside of the entry door, and left plaster on the floor. Carpet worn and dirty. Breakfast service at 7e per person was a poor value. Attendant was having a "bad day" and ignored our repeated requests. Receptionist was unhelpful when we complained. We found comparable food and beverage on nearby Rue de Rivoli for 6e. Would not recommend this hotel despite its good location.
Pam in Eugene, OR USA 06/26/2010
Best: Hotel Beaugency
Why: Great location (Rue Cler district). Extremely helpful staff. In fact, when a train strike was expected on the day we were flying out, one of the staff members actually called us after her shift was over to suggest we leave a little earlier than she had originally suggested. I loved them all there!
Vicki in Portland, OR USA 06/25/2010
Best: Hotel Kensington
Why: We stayed two nights at the Hotel Kensington in February. The location is great. It is near the Eiffel Tower, Rue Cler, and metro. The staff was friendly, the room was nice, and the price was right. We would definitely stay there again.
Dave and Heidi in Stillwater, OK USA 06/20/2010
Best: Hotel Beaugency - Paris
Why: Excellent, perfect location. Right off the Rue Cler, short walk to Champs du Mars, the Invalides, Rodin Museum, Rue St. Dominque, etc. Very nice room and bath, friendly helpful staff. I could not have chosen a better hotel for my 5 night stay in May.
Judith Beck in Perkasie, PA USA 06/16/2010
Worst: Hotel Leveque, 29 Rue Cler, Paris
Why: June 14, 2010
We just returned from a wonderful 45 day trip in five European countries using your recommendations $307 a day for two people $9.59 per person per 16 hour day. Positive feedback and clarifications will follow in a few days. But first, there was one negative experience which we draw to your attention.
Hotel Leveque, 29 Rue Cler, Paris.

Worst: Hotel Tour Eiffel Rive Gauche
Why: If you get one of the "front" rooms on the street, it's great. I did in 2006, and had a wonderful stay. This time, alas, I had one night in the "basement" (damp room, smelly bathroom, courtyard noise, no sleep) and four in the tiny "attic", during a 2-day heat wave. They did give me a HUGE fan (too noisy to sleep with), and I'm glad I asked for one first, since they only had one (I heard other guests asking unsuccessfully for a fan). Walls were thin, which wasn't great when Next Door had a 2 am party. I think if you continue to list this one, you should say that the room quality VARIES WIDELY, if you are going to be honest. This saddens me, as my first experience in 2006 was superb, but that was in March, and they put me in a front room.

Best: Paris For Rent
Why: They made the rental process very easy. They helped every step of the way and were very responsive to my questions. They were flexible when our travel plans changed. The apartment was exactly as we expected. The greeter in Paris not only helped us get settled in the apartment, but also took us around the neighborhood. I would definitely use them again. Thank you

Best: Hotel de Londres Eiffel
Why: I stayed here in Feb. 2006 and should have stayed here in May 2010. I didn't think one star would make a difference but it does. It was cleaner and quieter than Hotel de la Tour Eiffel and in the same neighborhood. I will stay at Londres Eiffel next time.
Worst: Hotel de la Tour Eiffel
Why: We were there May 14-22 and in the RS 2010 book it has "terrific" for this hotel, the only thing terrific about it was the location, very close to the Eiffel Tower and metro. The staff was nice, but the walls too thin, elevator and hallways too noisy. The only time we received more toilet paper was when we asked for another roll! Also it was not "spotless" as in the RS book, at least not our room.
Monica in Snow Camp, NC USA 05/29/2010
Best: Hotel du Cadran
Why: Enjoyed our stay, clean, new, friendly staff. Rooms are a bit snug, but we didn't spend much time in the hotel.
Rebecca in Washington, DC, USA 05/22/2010
Best: Les Jardins d'Eiffel on Rue Amelie
Why: The room was very small - the bed took up nearly the whole room - but the people were nice, friendly and helpful.
Worst: Anything near the Champs Elysees
Why: It's one big outdoor mall - lots of high end stores that you can visit in the US. Crowded sidewalks, expensive cafes. I had frequent traveler points with Hilton (stayed one night at the Hilton Arc de Triomphe) and the Marriott (right on the Champs Elysees). We ended up going back to Rue Cler to eat.

Best: Hotel de la Tour Eiffel
Why: Great little place! A real kick. Tiny room, tiny elevator, tiny hotel on a tiny street. It was sooo Parisian! We loved it. Staff was great. Excellent location. Would stay there again.

Best: Hotel Eber Mars
Why: Simple but spacious rooms, good service, helpful recommendations on dining out.
Worst: Hotel Prince, 66 Avenue Bosquet
Why: Run down. Holes in bedding and curtains. Bags of fertilizer stored in breakfast area. The worst I have ever encountered during many trips to Paris!
Mary Ellen Cook in Jacksonville, FL USA 03/07/2010
Best: Hotel Beauency
Why: The location was great and Rue Cler provided lots for starting the day. From cheap good eats for the morning, afternoon relaxing and when you need something it's nearby.

Best: Relais Bouquet on the Rue Cler
Why: Excellent staff. Rooms were large by Paris standards and the Rue Cler is such a wonderful district to operate from.
Charlie Galan in Nanaimo, BC Canada 11/13/2009
Worst: Hotel de Nevers
Why: I stayed in this hotel a year ago and found it to be a decent option for the budget traveler. I paid my bill in full when departing the hotel.
One year later, my credit card was billed again for this same hotel (I had not returned, obviously). I emailed the hotel for a refund but they never responded, so I contacted my credit card company to dispute the charge.
The most suspicious thing is that I've changed my credit card since, so I have a new expiration date.
BE AWARE OF THIS HOTEL!!!!!

Worst: Grand Hotel Leveque
Why: Reasonable rates. Great location. Dirty carpets. However, they had an obnoxious sign in the lobby (in English)prohibiting bringing your own food and drink to the rooms (although they gladly sell you their stuff to take to your room). Is this a hotel or a youth hostel? Some of these places take the bonanza in free publicity (and the American customers attached to it) given by placement in the Rick Steves book for granted. It is best to use the book to define the location then go to the multitude of websites offering lodging. There were lots of other better hotels in the Rue Cler area.
George FL USA 11/02/2009
Best: Beaugency Hotel
Why: The location of this hotel to the Rue Cler area is very convenient. The bathrooms in this hotel were the best we experienced in 2+ weeks in France. The breakfast was very good. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We used the free internet to communicate with family back home. The hotel was also within walking distance of the Route 69 buses which we used frequently to go to various sights. Also the hotel was within a 10 minute walk to the Eiffel tower.
Art / Karyn Lougheed in Markham, On Canada 11/01/2009
Worst: Hotel Jeanne d'Arc, 3 rue to Jarente
Why: Despite the exceptional location and rates, very friendly staff, delightful 6 euro breakfast, our experience at Jeanne d'Arc was not pleasant because the walls were so thin, we could hear every sneeze, conversation, and toilet flushing in all the rooms near us. Also the garbage truck comes by on weekdays at 8 a.m. and is horrendously loud for quite a while. The shower had no door or curtain, and water went everywhere, despite our best attempts. There is no AC, and I think this place would be intolerable in the summer, even with the small fans they furnish. The elevator is very, very small and they suggest only one person with luggage in each trip. The wait for the elevator can take quite a long time. Going up the stairs beyond the 3rd floor, especially with luggage, would be very difficult for some people. I think it's important to note in your book that they have a safe, but it's in the main office, not in the room. They have use of a computer in a back room, but no QUERTY keyboard. They were very helpful in securing a shuttle service to the airport, but the driver was half an hour late, said he was lost, and then when six of us arrived at the airport, owing him 17 euros each (and 8 euros went to the hotel), we all only had 20 euro bills and he insisted that he had no change.

Best: Grand Hotel Leveque
Why: Just cannot beat the location in my opinion. Also, they were extremely courteous in allowing us to store two suitcases while we went to Rome for 3 days. Also, had left a camera on a bed when checking out, called from taxi, and they had it waiting at the counter when we returned. Also, Wifi prices are very reasonable (though I seem to remember Wifi was free during our visit last year).
All that said, we stayed there last year and best times we had were sitting in their breakfast area late afternoons talking with other travelers, sharing wine purchased from local stores, and eating light snacks. This year they entirely cut this off, which was terribly disappointing as we had bragged about that feature to guests who joined us this year. Also, their renovations are coming along very slowly - despite rules against drinking and eating in rooms, the carpet in 3 of 4 rooms our group stayed in were very dirty. Also, very limited choice of TV stations (CNN only English station)

Worst: Hotel de la Tour Eiffel
Why: I don't expect too much from a hotel while I'm vacationing. At most, I'm awake and in my room for 2 hours. The rest of the time I'm either out and about or I'm sleeping. Unfortunately, I found this hotel unsatisfactory.... even by my standards.
The rooms were extremely cramped. I read that in the guide, but it needs repeating. This especially goes for the bathrooms.... should read "bath closets". A corner of the sink vanity had been worn away because there was no clearance to lift the toilet lid!! that should give you an idea of how small it was!
The ceiling in the shower leaked when the guests above us showered.
No A/C, which is no shocker.... but I opened the windows at night, and was eaten alive by mosquitoes. Sure, this may not be the hotel's fault, but it certainly doesn't lend itself to a good review.
The walls were paper thin. If I wasn't dead tired from sightseeing all day, I would have been kept awake by everybody's rumblings.
On the good side, the location is outstanding. While that's great, there are plenty of hotels in the area to choose from if I get a chance to visit Paris again.
The guidebook was a vital part in making the most of my vacation, but I just can't agree with the recommendation of this hotel. Sorry.

Why: I requested the "Rick Steves Rate" (the book says the hotel offers a 20% discount to readers). I was told the rate was 145 Euro, but for R.S. readers the rate was 130 Euro (not 20%). The internet rate on-line was 97 Euro! It's the old bait-and-switch scam. TAKE THIS HOTEL OUT OF THE BOOK!

Why: Clean, friendly, & quiet hotel. We enjoyed a very relaxing time here last weekend. These guys really aim to please. Their directions were flawless. Because my French is soooo terrible they called contacts for us to get hours of operation and more information. Every time we asked for assistance they were always eager to help. It's like staying with family. They served a wonderful French Breakfast every morning too. This hotel was a first class, distinguished operation.

Why: The hotel is in a great location near Rue Cler and the Eiffel Tower. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the two complimentary computer in the lounge. The hot breakfast buffet was great and included. Our room was very quiet, clean and comfortable. We will stay there again on our next trip to Paris.

Best: Grand Hotel Leveque
Why: We stayed at the Leveque on Rue Cler and found the rooms to be clean and the staff to be friendly. We were pleased they accommodated us by giving us a room in the back where we'd be away from the street noise in the morning.
Worst: Grand Hotel Leveque
Why: This hotel has very thin walls probably because it is an old building. Sound really carries starting at about 6:30 a.m. every day so ready or not, you're awake. More disappointing, though, was that we were not able to take any food or drink (coffee) up to our room. Normally, that wouldn't be a problem but there is so much "take out" food on Rue Cler and there's no where to take it close by and eat it. The hotel will not allow you to use their dining room or to bring anything into the hotel at all although they do seem to sell soft drinks at the desk. We thought it might be helpful if they remove the plants outside their front door and install a park bench. After a long day of running around Paris, a little coffee with CNN might have been nice.

Best: Hotel Relais Bosquet
Why: Hotel: Very friendly and helpful front desk personel. The hotel is perfectly located- short walk to Effel Tower. Bus line and metro stations are also close by to take you to all parts of the city. The breakfasts were nice (make sure you mention Rick Steve's guide book. Doing so gets you FREE breakfasts and a ticket to the Louvre or a boat ride on the Seine). The rooms are just average (definitely not 3 or 4 stars), but the staff and location made up for it. My only dislike was the toilet was in a closet size room next to the bed separate (by about 15 feet) from the bathroom. -----

Worst: Hotel De La Tour Eiffel
Why: We stayed at four hotels recommended in Rick Steves' Paris 2009 -- in Amsterdam, Bayeux, Brugges and Paris. All were absolutely fantastic, except for the Hotel de la Tour Eiffel. The "quiet" street was non-stop noise until 3:00 a.m. We encountered four different hotel staff. Only one (who was very helpful) answered our questions with more than a grunt. There were four light bulbs in the bathroom. Only one worked during our entire stay. The lighting in the hallways and stairway was so poor that we almost fell down the stairs several times. I realize this is only a 2-star hotel, and I fully expected the small room, but I was extremely disappointed. I would never recommend this place to anyone. Again, the other three hotels we stayed in were fabulous, so I guess 3 out of 4 isn't bad.

Worst: Hotel Eber Mars-Paris
Why: No AC and room was very hot during our stay of June 26-July 3. We were told there were 2-3 fans for the entire hotel and it was up to us to try and get one from the maid. Difficult to sleep with windows open due to noise. There were no screens so also some bugs that would come in and I have bad reactions to bites. Too hot with them closed. Much of the grout in the bathroom was black, apparently due to mold/mildew and no shelf in shower for shampoo or soap. The worst however was payment. We attempted to pay the night before departure in case there were any questions about the bill as we had an early train. We were told we must wait until morning and that it would only take a minute. There were questions and we didn't have time to settle them so ended up paying too much. Now they won't respond to my email. One item was the "free" breakfast that we were told we would get, then were charged for it.

Best: Hotel Eiffel Park
Why: The location is perfect, and at 90 euro/night it was a great value for a 3 star hotel. There's AC and an elevator. The staff were extremely helpful. And the charming rooftop terrace made for an excellent place to relax with a bottle of wine at the end of a long day. While I thought the breakfast was overpriced at 12 euro/person, you can get a great petit dejeuner around the corner on rue Cler for 5-6 euro/person.

Worst: Hotel Eber Mars
Why: After reserving via Expedia, I sent 2 separate emails to Hotel Eber Mars in an attempt to confirm our reservation and to request that our room be one with air conditioning. I received no response. Our room was NOT air conditioned. We were there July,2009 and it was very hot. Traffic noise made it impossible to sleep. One of the shower doors was missing. The bathroom door handle was broken which caused my daughter (11) to get stuck inside for a stressful several minutes. The carpet was dirty. The lift does not go to the first floor. Overall, a very negative experience. In spite of the location near the Eiffel, we will never stay here again.

Worst: Hotel Beaugency
Why: The man at the desk at night was somewhat rude. He would consisitantly give us the wrong room key, even when we first asked in french and then would write it out on paper. Made me concerned that he was giving our key to other also.None of the clerks made eye contact and when asked for directions/metro/bus, would sigh and grab a tourist map. Readers should be informed that they are asked to leave the key at the desk- which you need to do because of the size- huge plastic key with a large tassle. We also we informed of the "rick discount" not being an option. The bed has a matress similar to one from a roll-out sofa and at 5' 2", my feet hung off the end. The room was very clean but about 6" too small all around. You will have to move the bed each time you come in and also open the closet door. The shower door was one that folds onto itself, which it didn't do willingly. There was mold around the base of the shower. I have used "Rick Steves" for Amsterdam and Brussles with great results. I have to say I would try another hotel before going back to this one again.

Best: Hotel Beaugency
Why: I really enjoyed my stay at the Beaugency. It was an AWESOME location, we had breakfast in the Champ de Mars, with view on the Tower, 2 out of 4 mornings! My only complaint is that they wouldn't give me the 20% off even with my Rick book. When we booked I had mentioned in the comment section that we had the book, but since we were staying for 4 nights they insisted that they could only give us the 3+ nights discount, which was more like 10%. When we checked in they said they couldn't give us the Rick discount because they could only give it to so many rooms, and all the "Rick rooms" were taken. Well, in our 5 days/4 nights there we almost never ran into other people, so I'm not saying that she was lying, but I find that hard to believe. Regardless, when we go back to Paris, I will definitely consider Beaugency as an option - but we're absolutely staying near rue Cler again!

Worst: Hotel Champs du Mar
Why: This hotel was conveniently located and well-priced but I would not recommend it to anyone who enjoys bathing regularly. We stayed for 7 days last week. The sink was semi-clogged the entire time. Stuff from the drain kept coming up every time we ran water. The shower temperature could not be regulated for more than about 2 minutes. It took twice as long as it should to shower because we were constantly re-adjusting it to keep from scalding or freezing ourselves. When I complained they said it was old plumbing and that was the way it was. I would have been happy to pay a few more Euros a night for a decent shower.
In addition, the night before we left I requested that they set up a taxi for us. Heeding Rick's advice, I specifically requested a taxi ordinaire so we wouldn't get a limo. Instead, they set us up with a shuttle that took nearly 2 hours to get to the airport because they had another stop to make at the other end of Paris and then the driver got lost because he couldn't find the departures at the airport (I think it was his first day).

Worst: ParisHome 2000
Why: I would not say this small studio apartment was the worst place we ever stayed. It was clean but our main reason for selecting the apartment, the washer dryer combo, was broken. No attempt was made to replace or repair it while we were there. Bathroom extremely small and on a very noisy street. 2 restaurants whose employees took frequent smoke breaks late at night and talked back and forth across the street often woke us up. Those renting the apt should be aware there is no fan or AC and even in 60-70Ί weather the place geys quite warm.

Why: Good buffet breakfast. Rooms were comfortable and clean - a nice place to relax after a busy day of sightseeing. The fridge in room was also a nice treat. The hotel was in the middle of renovation, which was a surprise, but overall not terribly inconvenient. It just meant walking around the painters and sitting in a breakfast room with bare lightbulbs sticking out of the walls. We felt a bit of pressure from staff to use shuttle service to airport rather than public transportation. We instead took the metro to the airport - it took about 1 hour and was very easy. It also was cheaper than what the front desk worker told us when he was trying to convince us to take the shuttle. Overall, would stay here again considering I found an online special for 105 euros per night with free breakfast buffet and free louvre tickets.

Why: This hotel is very nice and accommodating. Amel is most helpful as is the whole hotel staff. The breakfast buffet is "sans moderation" translated eat all you want, the benefit of "eating in". Yes, by reserving on line using the code word RICK got us the 20% discount. Also we asked for a room with a view, and indeed could see the top third of the Eiffel Tower flashing while laying in bed!! It is a stone's throw from rue Cler. We live in Germany and will be returning to Hotel Beaugency again in May.

Why: Location. Location. Location. We had originally requested a room at the Hotel du Champ de Mars, but they never responded to my first email. When I contacted them again I was told they had no vacancies. And, I'm glad they didn't. Our second choice, Hotel de la Tour Eiffel, was clean, comfortable, affordable, in a very safe area, and looked like it had recently been redecorated. Our "superior double" room was a little larger than most of their rooms and had everything we needed -- including an elevator just outside our room and two large windows that looked out onto the quiet rue de l'Exposition. Best of all, though, the hotel was situated between rue Saint Dominique and rue de Grenelle...a half block from Bus 69 (the bus was much more fun than the subway!), and close to the Eiffel Tower and Seine sightseeing boats, bakeries, a grocery store, two laundromats, a coffee shop, take-out restaurants, and several of Rick's recommended restaurants. We were there for nine days from May 16-25, 2009. I can say that the fabulous location -- and the great, friendly advice given to us by the hotel manager, Kamel --is what made our trip so much fun! I highly recommend Hotel de la Tour Eiffel. Ask for one of their larger rooms -- similar to our Room 23. They have an apartment available, too.

Best: Hotel Muguet
Why: I booked the Hotel Muguet based upon advice from Rick and the great reviews on TripAdvisor. Reserving a room through e-mail was not a problem, with rapid responses to my requests and questions. I stayed in Room 2, in the small main courtyard, for eight nights. The room was VERY clean and quiet, with fresh towels placed in the room every day. The staff, such as owner Catherine Pelletier, and Yuri were very friendly, polite, and helpful. Breakfast was not included, and cost 10 Euros each morning, but it is well worth it! You are given a 1/4 baguette and a large whole croissant, then are free to choose from two brands and several flavors of yogurt, three kinds of cheese, two brands of fruit cups, fresh fruit, ham, salami, three kinds of dry cereal, tea, coffee, two flavors of juice, hot chocolate, hard-boiled eggs, and mini-muffins. I ate breakfast at the hotel every morning and wasn't hungry again until the evening! Finally, the hotel is very convenient to the Ecole Militaire and La Tour Maubourg metro stops. I would DEFINITELY recommend this hotel to a friend and GLADLY stay here on my next trip to Paris!

Worst: Hotel du Champ de Mars
Why: I read so many great comments about this hotel- and was really disappointed. It was a headache even before we checked in. To book the hotel, it took several e-mails. They wouldn't respond for weeks. In those e-mails, I advised them we had a rental car. They confirmed they had parking for guests. When we arrived (after a LONG day of driving) the desk clerk VERY RUDELY scoffed at the idea of guest parking. I showed him the e-mail I received indicating so, and he told me I was ridiculous for thinking a hotel in Paris would have parking. As this was my first time in Paris, how should I know that????
Next issue- we decided to return our rental car that night since there was no parking. This same lovely desk clerk said Auto Europe was open. We went there, and they were closed. Thanks!
At the time of check-out, we explained we needed a taxi for our bus shuttle. Instead, they called for an airport shuttle, which charged us 30 euros for a 5 minute ride.
VERY DISAPPOINTING. WOULD NEVER STAY THERE AGAIN.

Best: Hotel Beaugency
Why: This is my second time staying at the Hotel Beaugency and I couldn't be more pleased! The hotel is small, safe and very clean and the morning buffet is great. However, the staff is the real gem of the Hotel Beaugency. On the day of my departure from Paris, it snowed which caused total mayhem in Paris. Airport Connection had to cancel my shuttle due to safety concerns (it seems that salt is not an option on snowy roads in Paris). The Hotel Beaugency convinced a cab company to take me to Gare du Nord so that I could get a train to Charles de Gaulle; however, when the cab pulled up, they talked the driver into taking me the whole way to the airport. Truly, they saved my life! I would not have made my flight without the cab service. Hotel Beaugency will always be my first choice in Paris!

Best: Hotel Champs du Mar
Why: Despite some of the bad reviews that I have read, I found this hotel extremely charming and the staff the most helpful/informative. There was never a language barrier. In fact other than French greetings and words to imply proper manners, we never had to communicate with the French I attempted to learn and feared doing so (what a hard language to learn). The staff was always polite, pleasant and informative; especially when it came to finding transportation to the airport, where we planned on taking public transportation. Not only did they make the calls to reserve a shuttle bus at the last minute, but it was affordable and the best mode to get to the airport on a Sunday. Our room was small but cozy and romantic with a nice street view.
We came prepared with a structured game plan and a researched itinery and never bombarded them with extensive questions on where to eat/what to do. Maybe this is why some people thought the staff was cold or rude. As I live on the west coast of Florida, I come into contact with many clueless tourists that I feel don't research their trips enough. It gets irritating after a while, answering the same questions. Plus, the French service industry has a tendency to not be such "butt kissers" like they are in the States. Its all about being prepared, doing your research, and not being so sensitive and easily offended by people that have a really different approach toward dealing with the public.
