Rome 2012 Guidebook
Best and worst accommodations:
Best: Downtown Accomodation Roma
Why: My husband and I stayed at Downtown Accomodation in Rome for 6 days on the advice of a good friend. Location, location, location is the key for this small property. The B&B is mere steps from the Coliseum and Roman Forum. Terrific little CHEAP restaurants all around and within short walking distances. We walked to all of the major attractions in Rome. The metro is only steps away to get to the Vatican. Lorenzo is really wonderful. Our room was lovely, spotlessly clean and tastefully decorated. The breakfasts were perfect. We would have no hesitation in booking again with Lorenzo next time we visit Rome.
Amazing!!!
SARAH in ROMNEY, MI USA 02/03/2012
Best: Arco de Tolomei Guest House
Why: We had such a wonderful, comfortable stay at Arco De Tolomei. Our hosts were friendly and so helpful and the amenities and location were absolutely perfect. We also received a generous discount for paying in cash. When we return to Rome, we would stay here again and I'd recommend this to any traveler seeking a relaxing place to stay that would introduce them to the "real" Rome. The Trastevere neighborhood was perfect.

Best: Downtown Accomodation
Why: It was very good, feelt like staying in a friend's house. Feelt very safe this was my biggest concern because of traveling alone, but it was very good. Lorenso gave me all his recomendations on the city, were to go, were was better to eat or buy things. I absolutelly recomend this place. It was a wonderful experience. If you contact them directly you can get a cheaper price than on internet, I did that. http://www.downtownaccomodation.com/

Best: B&B Smart
Why: It was incredibly clean and cozy. Isa and her husband were so friendly! It was easy to find and we came when it was dark. Her husband let us in and gave is a map and an overview of how to get places, which was very helpful. Isa brought us a delicious breakfast every morning and our room was spotless every evening when we came back. It well worth the stay, very cheap for so much service.
We paid just 50euro per night for the month of january.
Julie Bierderman in Berlin, Germany 01/15/2012
Best: Hotel Paba
Why: The location is excellent - just a few blocks from the Colosseum on Via Cavour. Alberta Castelli was very gracious and helpful with sight-seeing advice, help with tuning our TV, and safety tips - especially since we happened to be there during the Occupy Rome demonstrations, which caused some of the major sights to be closed that day. The in-room breakfasts were lovely, and free wifi an added bonus.

Best: Guest House Arco dei Toomei
Why: The rooms were large and comfortable with a beautiful balcony. The location was fabulous! The owner, Marco and his family and staff are AMAZING hosts who are sincerely committed to providing outstanding accommodations! I spent 20+ years as a hotel general manager and I have never met any innkeeper as wonderful as Marco!

Best: Arco dei Tolomei
Why: From our warm welcome to our fond arrividerci, our stay at Arco dei Tooemei was perfect. Marco is the ultimate host and Katya the best concierge. Jocelyn’s home made pastries made breakfast a treat. The location of this guest house is wonderful, just across the Tiber, within walking distance to many of Rome’s treasures. In the evening a short walk to several squares offered many inviting restaurants and shops. Opening our shutters and looking out the window of our immaculate room onto the small cobblestone street below, was straight out of the movies. A wonderful experience in a wonderful city!!!

Best: Downtown Accomodation
Why: Downtown Accomodation is really amazing. The price is very cheap (around 60 euro in low seasons and 120 in high seasons). Our room was nicely decorated and mid-size. Breakfast was great with Italian espresso coffee, homemade pastries, yogurt and much more! Location is the best, you are just 200 metres from the Colosseum and 100 metres from the Forum, if you get a room over the street you can also see a small view of the Roman Forum! Lorenzo & Isa, the owners, are really nice & sweet, they gave us a free map and showed us the city and also gave us some suggestion. Hingly recommended for people looking for a cheap but great accommodation in the center of Rome!!!

Best: Hotel Margaret
Why: A wonderfully located budget hotel. The rooms were sparkling clean, the bed comfy, the breakfast typically sparse by American standards, but in a pleasant area off the main hotel desk. This is a small hotel on the fourth floor of an apartment/business building that is within walking distance of everything--15 minutes to the Borghese. Plus, just around the corner is an island where almost every bus in Rome stops. A handy pharmacy is around the corner. My husband and I were in Rome in May 2011 for 11 nights so we did run out of toothpaste. Across the street from the hotel is a great restaurant, Don Giovanni, perfect for the two nights when we were too tired to make a "where to eat" decision.
Berry Barta in Indiana, PA USA 10/11/2011
Best: Guesthouse Arco dei Tolomei
Why: Wonderful host, Marco, and staff, especially Josline ( and her husband Rudolfo ). The location was Perfect, lots of small, reasonable restaurants nearby. Good, if not great Flea Market closeby on Sunday. The rooms were squeaky clean, decorated with antiques, and several rooms, ( I was lucky enough to get one ) have small balconies with table and chairs and views over rooftops. ) I would definitely return again and highly recommend to anyone. The breakfast is served at a communal table from 8-10 AM, and Marco comes out, and we all share experiences, new finds, etc. I was travelling alone and felt Very comfortable and safe here.
Cindy Luis in Cambria, CA USA 10/07/2011
Best: tours
Why: It was easy to identify them from the book.
Worst: some taxi
Why: I did not follow properly Rick's advise and I was overcharged one time.

Best: Arco dei Tolomei
Why: Location, location, location, Trastevere section of Rome!!! Marco, Gianna and Catia charming hosts, lovely rooms with A/C, delicious breakfast included, free Internet in parlor. Wonderful restaurants and shopping right outside the door. You will never regret your stay at Arco de Tolomei. We look forward to our third visit in May 2012.
Ginbud in Niceville, Fl USA 09/28/2011
Best: Residenza Arco De' Tolomei
Why: My wife and I could not have asked for a more wonderful experience. We stayed 5 nights with Marco and Gianna and believe we got a true feel of living in Rome. The location was ideal. Close to transportation, wonderful attractions, a variety of eateries and local nightlife. Our room was beautiful with large windows looking out on our own patio. Breakfast each morning was a treat in itself. A chance to meet other guests and share their adventures in Rome. during and after breakfast Marco and Gianna could not have been more helpful and knowledgeable with suggestions, reservations and information to make our visit as full as possible. If we are fortunate enough to return to Rome in the future, "Residenza Arco De' Tolomei" would be our first choice.

Best: Downtown Accomodation
Why: Next to the Colosseum and Forum and transport links. Lorenzo was fantastic and very helpful making sure we had a plan to see the sights. Accommodation was great and nicely decorated. Close to restaurants. We will be back! Thanks Lorenzo for your help!

Best: Hotel Smeraldo
Why: Location location location, clean rooms, decent breakfast
John in Kingston, On Can 09/04/2011
Best: Casa Rezzonico, Venice
Why: People, location, amenities - all here. I hit the ground suffering greatly from jet lag but still had to get a cellphone up and running and Internet access for my week-long seminar. Mattia was extremely kind and helpful during that long first day. My room was wonderful, and breakfast was in a beautiful garden. Matteo is just as kind and informative. From the people I spoke to, they have a lot of repeat visitors.
Judy in Boulder, CO USA 08/01/2011
Best: Hotel Selene
Why: They gave us excellent service in providing a great taxi service for our party of six from the airport to the hotel. And they called taxis for us whenever we needed them. Taxi service in Rome is very fast and convenient. Also the included breakfast was very good. Suggestion for listing: Add that it's difficult to pull luggage up the steep marble steps to the elevator landing.

Best: B&B Smart in Rome
Why: Isa is the best host ever. We stayed in a double room at the B&B Smart for 5 nights. The place is really nice with a very very big room and bathroom and really welcoming staff. Really clean and tidy room!! http://www.bandbromeitaly.com/
ALINA in Mackintosh, MI USA 07/04/2011
Best: Residenza Giubbonari
Why: Not recommended by RS, I found out about it somewhere else I can't recall. It was excellent. Located on a pedestrian street, Via dei Giubbonari, a block east of Campo di Fiori, in the heart of where you want to be in Rome. It is a 6-story apartment building, and we rented the penthouse for our 6-person group. It worked perfectly, and we even had terraces with chairs and shade, so we could enjoy the outdoors overlooking Rome. ResidenzaGiubbonari.com

Best: Downtown Accomodation
Why: We did a wonderful choice! The location of the hotel is excellent and very safe, very close to the Colosseo and Foro Romano. Besides, you can walk to other tourist spots from the hotel as well. And there are many inexpensive but excellent italian resturants nearby (La taverna dei fori imperiali, il grillo parlante...). The owner Lorenzo is so kind and helpful when we arrived he gave us a map and explained everything about transportation and kindly answered our questions. We saved the transportation cost a lot since we could walk to the most of the tourist spots from the B&B (3 minutes to the Colosseum, 3 to the Forum, 10 to the station... GREAT!). The guesthouse is clean and spotless and with free wifi. Downtown Accomodation is highly recommended by me and my husband! Hingly reccommended for couples.

Best: Nicolas Inn
Why: Great hosts, wonderful rooms and excellent restaurant recommendations.
Frank in Washington, DC USA 05/26/2011
Best: B&B Smart in Rome
Why: The stay was simply perfect. Normally, hotel/hostel/B&B and etc have small size room in Europe. However, the room I stayed in was relevantly big, so is the bed. However, this is not the reason making our experience so perfect. Customization and the warmth of the staff is the key. All the staffs, especially Isa, are friendly. As for the first impression, Isa comes out the B&B to welcome us; in addition, she explained the facilities, the keys, show us where to go on a map and how to get there. Also, she reminds us that we should be careful about our belongings because of the thieves.
Every our breakfasts are arrange one day before, everyday, she asked that what time we want the breakfast on the following day. In addition, on our last day, we had to leave at 5 a.m. in the morning. She brought us croissants, yogurt and cookies in the evening for us to enjoy them when we leave. Finally, it has a really good location where we can walk to the train station in 5 mins. The only little disadvantage might be the room availability for the future customers. I believe they only have 3 rooms. Therefore, If you decided to stay here, make your booking as early as possible.

Best: Downtown Accomodation
Why: My husband and I visited Rome for the first rime and enjoyed it very much mostly because of the hospitality of our host, Lorenzo. The room, the location and the breakfasts were delightful. We were located 2 minutes from the COLOSSEUM, ROMAN FORUM, and good restaurants. We look forward to returning! ;)

Why: so wonderfully different to a normal city hotel, only few cosy rooms, very friendly hosts, great location, all sights in walking distance, easy to reach from the airport.
Anett in Frankfurt, Germany 04/03/2011
Best: Hotel Rosetta
Why: Perfect location! So close to the Colosseum, an easy walk to the Trevi and everything around that area including the Pantheon. The innkeepers were very kind and accommodating. The rooms that are a part of the main Hotel are fine. Clean, quiet and well run.
Worst: Hotel Rosetta - the annex rooms
Why: It really wasn't the worst, but I did want to mention that these rooms face the courtyard and are somehow louder than the ones that face the street. The room we had here also had a big bathroom with a tiny shower. Neither my husband nor myself are big people but this shower was even smaller than all of the others we'd seen. Plus the hot water heater thing wasn't as effective as being in the main hotel.
Shannon Fonferko in Schaumburg, IL USA 03/20/2011
Best: B&B Arco de' Tolomei
Why: Everyone comments about how great this place is - and they are 100% correct. Marco, Catia, and Josline are wonderful. We were not the typical tourists having lived in Rome previously. We received great ideas for places to visit and eat. The conversation each morning at breakfast was a superb way to begin the day! We had always stayed at our own apartment or with friends on previous visits, so we were unsure about staying in a hotel. Arco de' Tolomei felt like home. We stayed a total of 10 nights and felt like we had hit the jackpot in choosing it.

Best: Residenza l'Arco de Tolomei
Why: This is a very good guest house. The welcome was very warm and you immediately feel at home. The rooms are comfortable and characterful. The breakfast is excellent and sitting around the communal table, you get to know your fellow guests over a leisurely and plentiful meal - a delightful experience. Marco and Katia helped us with all our tourists needs and amused us with conversation and local knowledge. We have rarely felt so relaxed and at home in a guest house - a lovely experience.
Delyth Edwards in Cardiff, Wales, G.B. 03/09/2011
Best: Residenza Arco dei Tolomei
Why: it was a wonderful weekend in Rome. Residenza Arco de' Tolomei is a private and over generations owned house and palazzo in the midst of Trastevere, just a walking distance from the historical center... The house is owned by Marco & Gianna Paola Fe' d'Ostiani, and they live ind the second part of the house. There is no sign or great entrance, you are entering a normal apartment building.. Just the door bell indicates that there is a guesthouse hidden behind the doors. The room was lovely with steps to the roof terrace, overlooking Rome. And Marco surely has the best suggestions for sightseeing or going out in Rome (Enzo's was a dream!) - be sure to follow them!!! If you're looking for a great place to stay in Rome - than this is it!
mr in munich, germany 03/09/2011
Best: arco dei tolomei
Why: This B&B is tucked into the historic and quaint Trastereve area of Rome. Built during the middle ages and beauitfully restored and refurbished, Arco Dei Tolomei has an intereting history of its own. Most Roman sites are walkable from here. The owners, Marco and Gianna and their wonderful staff, esp. Joseline, (the cook and maid), helped to make our stay in this beautifully refurbished B&B very comfortable, intersesting and fun. Every morning during the wonderful breakfast we were able to visit with other guests, while Marco and staff helped us plan our day trips. We felt like we were staying with friends.

Why: My husband and I had a truly great and full of attractions stay and B&B Smart was a great place to stay in Rome.
Owner Isa, who is very charming and nice person, made everything to help us! The room was pretty big and comfortable! Everything was super clean!
B&B is really close to the Termini station and sights of interest such as the Coliseum, Forum Romano and other tourist attractions. Light breakfast (croissants, coffee, warm milk and juice) are served in the room. Free wifi in room is available.
Simply - great location, atmosphere, facilities and owner!

Best: topbike rental & tours
Why: We recently took a bicycle tour (guided by Michele) and it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable parts of our trip to Italy. We took 4-hour City Center tour: the Coliseum, Roman Forum, Circus Maximus, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Pantheon, Navona Square, Capitoline Hill, and other sites around Rome and were actually the only 2 people on the tour that day, so we had an even more unique experience than we might have otherwise had. Michele was a terrific guide and was able to not only give us the history of what we were seeing but also offered to take pictures of us on the tour when we would stop at certain sights. Overall, the experience was well worth the expense and a great way to see much of Rome.

Clay Bullwinkel in Portola Valley, CA USA 12/29/2010
Best: Layout of the city
Why: I did my research (like Steve recommended), but if you are in decent physical condition, you can walk ANYWHERE. We stayed at a nice hotel a few blocks from St. Peters, and we walked to the Coliseum twice and everywhere in between. I was surprised how close everything was. We used the subway a few times, but it was more fun walking the city.
Worst: Tourists-dumb ones
Why: I actually observed (on several occasions) people touching, or trying to touch the ancient artifacts !!!! Seriously people, keep your hands OFF. Statues that have survived since 1 BC don't need your fingers on them ! Be respectful...if it says NO FLASHES, then turn off your flash !
John in Denton, TX USA 12/12/2010
Best: Bellssuite-Rome
Why: Excellent staff and location. Last day going to the airport is example of the staff in action. Rome was it by a heavy rain. Bruno was to get a taxi for me at 0900 hours. Obviously, he was having difficulty with the phone system, taxi company or both. He called direct to a friend who drives a taxi. Minutes later, a taxi arrives, Bruno loads my bags into the vehicle and I make my flight. Good job, Bruno!!

Why: Our stay in Arco dei Tolomei was absolutely wonderful! I traveled with my husband and wanted some romantic atmosphere and we got it at this guest house. The interior of was marvelous! We've got an aesthetic pleasure to stay in. Each detail was carefully and tastefully chosen, beds are comfy, room was clean and pleasant. The dining room and common area were beautiful. The breakfast was very good and very tasty with fresh fruits, coffee, bakery etc. Location of this guest house is perfect. Trastevere is a very stylish and truly roman part of a city. The staff is unbelievable. We would like to thank Marco, Katia, and all the team for making our stay in Rome unforgettable. They are so welcoming that you can't stand to thank them again and again. Marco and Katia gave us great advices for sightseeing and helped with booking cafes and restaurants. Marco is a smart and intelligent host so you will never regret if follow his advice!

Why: Nicolas Inn was full so we actually stayed at the Nicolas Apartment across the street. This turned out great for us. We spent a week in Rome so we enjoyed the extra space and being able to cook. If we had any questions we just popped across the street and they gave us a hand with dinner recommendations and reservations

Worst: Hotel 939- Rome
Why: Why on Earth would this rats nest be in your guidebook? First of all, no where do they call themselves 939, everything on their signs say "Hotel Marcus". There were rodents in the entry way, there was a giant hole in the ceiling with electrial wires danging down and none of our outlets worked and in fact, were just holes in the wall with danging wires in them. We both got bed bugs and had to throw out a lot of clothing for fear we would bring them home with us. The staff was rude and scary and tried to charge us for a breakfast we didn't eat. (I would not have eaten anything there with all the rodents scurrying around). I cannot believe you put this hotel in your book. I am so disappointed you.
Annie in Boulder, co USA 10/27/2010
Best: Arco dei Tolomei
Why: We have enjoyed traveling to Rome several times and booked this trip with the express purpose of leisurely exploring some off the beaten path sights and eating fabulous food. This turned out to be our favorite trip to Rome largely due to Arco dei Tolomei and their incredible staff. The place itself is so charming and is as comfortable as staying with old friends. Our room had a private terrace and breakfast was the best we have had in Italy. The staff led by Marco could not be more welcoming and accommodating. They went out of their way to recommend and reserve favorite neighborhood restaurants for us. And Marco was an unending source of fascinating cultural gems that we never would have gone to on our own. Wonderful, wonderful, wonderful!

Best: Hotel Cortina
Why: We have just returned from two weeks in, Rome and Amalfi coast. Our stay in Rome was significantly enhanced by the staff and Mr. Angelo Milana of the Hotel Cortina on Via Nazionale, just a few blocks from the main train station Roma Termini. Our apartment was spacious, very well appointed with a great bath and small kitchen. The terrace off the bedroom was great. If you go to Rome stay at this hotel. Hotel Cortina Roma [hotelcortinaroma@tiscali.it] Mr. Angelo Milana and the staff received us graciously and provided invaluable local information and advice. Prior to leaving the USA Mr. Milana was tremendously helpful in obtaining train tickets, museum reservations and travel advise. The communications (e-mails) to set up a reservation were very professional and punctual in the months before my arrival to Rome. The Hotel Cortina’s location takes advantage of the metro within two blocks and the main train station for day trips just four blocks away. The hotel is completely ringed by great restaurants and pizzerias.

Why: Was everything described in the book, the staff was gracious and helpful, we were given a cappucino in the lounge while we were waiting for our room to be ready, and never were charged for it. I booked online - quoted price was 225 euros - then I said "Rick STeves discount" and was then quoted 200 euros. When we settled up at the end, the room rate was 180 euros.

Why: We stayed 3 nights, then again 3 days later for 1 night. The staff seemed distracted, toilet seats were broken or loose, wireless internet didn't work, and the 'delightful rooftop terrace' was a covered walkway. On the second stay the bed was nearly unusable as the center was so much higher than the sides it was a struggle to stay in.

Worst: Hotel Nazionale, Pza. Montecitorio
Why: I can not believe you would recommend this place! I stay here often for business purposes, and the staff is ridiculously rude. They hate people in general. There is maybe 2 people that are polite and professional. I had expressed my problems to the manager and he turned everything around and made everything my co-workers and my fault. I had listed a long list of problems, such as not receiving calls, switching off the air conditioning, rude service, etc. The managers' response was to say that it was not his fault that our family/Company did not know how to dial a telephone. He claimed that there was always a power outage (funny how the tv and lights worked, but not the air?), the rudeness of the staff was due to OUR lack of Customer Service. I explained to him that I am the customer and that the staff always rolls their eyes when approached by any of us guests. I sit and watch them treat the guests with such disrespect. I try to find out who the true owner is, I always come up with a dead end.

Worst: Hotel Select
Why: My husband and I began and ended our vacation in Rome. We booked Hotel Select for our last night in Rome, because it was near Termini. When we arrived at Hotel Select, we were promptly told that we were booked in one of their other hotels down the street. My husband and I were confused. I showed the manager my email confirmation from Hotel Select, and it didn't mention anything about another hotel. He again said that we were booked in another hotel owned by Hotel Select and directed us to Hotel Europa, which was two blocks away. Upon arriving there, Hotel Europa's manager told us that the two hotels were not connected and that we were moved because there was no room for us in Hotel Select. Upon our request, she called back to Hotel Select, and that manager told her that there was an electrical problem in the room we had booked...a different story than he had told us earlier. Needless to say, we were not happy with our Hotel Select experience.

Why: Loved the neighborhood, Trastevere, a very central location in Rome and within walking distance to major sights, but away from the major business areas. Lots of great restaurants, small boutiques. Marco, the owner, was really helpful with various recommendations (restaurants, transportation, etc.) and Catya recommended some great tours. The room was small but very pretty with a small deck outside, a nice bathroom, good lighting, and very clean. The breakfast each morning was great. We were in Rome during the volcano eruption and Marco was able to extend our stay at the last minute.

Best: Guesthouse Arco dei Tolomei
Why: What a wonderful little hotel in Rome! I literally felt like I was visiting family. Marco, a proud native of Rome, will help with everything, from your sightseeing, to finding a train out. The hotel itself is a converted apartment and it feels as such. The decor is genuine with a traditional feel, but not frumpy, with beautiful collected heirloom antiques and real Persian rugs. The rooms aren't large, but they are comfortable, clean and magazine perfect. The sheets are of a fine quality and there's quite a bit of water pressure in the shower. As festive as the breakfast is, I'd skip it and do as the Romans do and grab a pastry and cappuccino at piazza Farnese, a 5 minute walk. This is a truly Roman experience.
I had the pleasure of staying twice, in two separate rooms: the balcony room and Marco's daughter's room(when she used to live there). His daughter's room had more space and a bathtub separate from the shower. It was quieter, and better appointed. I also really enjoyed staying in the balcony room. Even though I could hear the people in the room next to me on occasion, that balcony was really an amazing touch. This is for the traveler who wants to be central, but not in the fest like, tour bus ridden center. It's literally a block and a half walk from the bridge to cross over into the historic center. It's for the traveler who doesn't need the pampering of a full service hotel, or full time front lobby staff. Arco dei Tolomei is more home then hotel, and for me the perfect place to stay while visiting Rome. I can't wait to return to see my new Roman uncle and his beautiful city again.
NOTE: get really good directions. The hotel is not marked, and Rome is a maze.

Best: Residenza Arco dei Tolomei
Why: We spent eleven nights at Arco dei Tolomei and our experience was delightful. We loved the location of the guest house in Trastevere, which gave us the sense of a real Roman neighborhood. We were fortunate to enjoy the room with the large balcony where we spent time enjoying the Roman sunshine and smelling the wisteria. We even had one dinner here. We appreciated access to the internet at all times. However, certainly what made our stay so pleasant was the hospitality and generous help of our host Marco, who booked museum tickets, made dinner reservations, ordered cabs, and best of all suggested sites to visit we certainly would have missed on our own. We appreciated getting off the beaten track to see some more intimate corners of Rome. Marco even presented us with a bottle of wine when he learned we were celebrating our wedding anniversary. Every morning a guide, Katya, was available to help us plan our days, give advice about bus routes, etc. Together these two people greatly enhanced our Roman holiday.

Best: Guest House Arco dei Tolomei
Why: A gem, ideally situated for exploring Rome on foot. A room with a (small) balcony is a plus - a glass of wine while looking out over the rooftops of Trastevere takes some beating. Nothing is too much trouble for Marco and his team. If you want help/advice about what to see, where to eat etc, it is there. If you have your own ideas, they will work around them. Excellent breakfasts. Not cheap, but a very civilised place. We will go again.

Why: We liked the location, neighborhood, proximity to the river, wonderful restaurants nearby; we walked everywhere and did so easily from Trastevere; simple, clean rooms were charming; ample and delicious breakfast included; we appreciated guidance and information, kindly given by Catia and Marco who were available, especially mornings, for whatever consultation was needed. We paid a bit more for accommodations in Rome, but felt it was worth it.

Worst: European hotel bathrooms and room sizes
Why: First time travelers to Europe will be disappointed to find that rooms & bathrooms are much smaller than we're used to in the U.S. Shower spaces can be extremely small. Why: The hotel is close to the Termini train station (one block away), it's an easy way to make any side trips to anywhere in Italy and Europe. Most of all major city transportation is at the Termini (including all the hop on hop off city tour busses). The hotel staff was friendly and helpful and the breakfast was good. The room was OK but nothing fancy, just the basics. The room was fairly clean, but we noticed that as the days went on the maid service was getting a little lacked in the bathroom. Now the bathroom; the only problem we found was it looked a little tired, there was rust on the drain and on some of the metal panels on the ceiling (why anyone would put metal panels on the bathroom is beyond me?). The neighborhood around the Termini can be seedy at night, just keep your eyes moving and follow your instincts. We had no problems.

Best: Guest House Arco dei Tolomei
Why: The Residenza Arco dei Tolomei in the Trastevere part of Rome certainly gave us the feeling of the authentic "Old Rome". It is the closest you will get to a medieval village. Marco and Gianna and their staff are very personable and they made our stay at their home memorable. The house has been in the family for generations and is furnished with beautiful antiques which adds to the charm of this venue. Leena served a satisfying breakfast each morning in the dining room where we had the opportunity to chat with other guests from around the world. We would highly recommend this Guest House to any traveler who is tired of the regular hotel experience and prefers the personal touch given here. For the first time traveler to Rome or to non-big city dwellers, Rome is a "big city" vacation with surprises around every corner. Everything is in walking distance basically on narrow cobblestone streets. There are all the usual sights to see and Marco or Catia will pull out the maps and give you tips on other great spots that are not on the regular tourist agenda! We thoroughly enjoyed our 8 day stay and found everything comfortable, quiet and quaint in a nice location. Great for us !!

Why: Clean; great, plentiful bathrooms; nice decor, quite, everyone I met in my 8 nights there was of a special kind. Great energy, great staff and guests.
Worst: Fawlty Towers Hostel
Why: Dirty. The smell of raw sewage in the air through the back hall where the bedrooms are, trying not to breathe in the bathrooms, the standing water (left from the last person) in the dirty showers which sprayed every which way, dowsing the room and your clothes. Kind of miserable bed rooms with really high ceilings, dim lighting and uncomfortably placed beds. --The kitchen was nice though, kind of lofty, open-air, sunny.

Why: The hotel was very nice, breakfast was huge (eggs, bacon etc.) and they staff was very helpful and accomodating. The room was small but that is par for the course in Europe. However, after the first night my husband asked at reception if all of their beds were firm. He has a bad back and the mattress was too hard for him. The man at reception said yes (they are orthopedic) but that he could bring another mattress to put on top of ours and maybe help. As we left breakfast, we met the man at the elevator with our new mattress. And it was better, much more comfortable!! They went out of their way to make our stay great. They even got online and made reservations at the Vatican Museum for 40 minutes later as the line was so long! i would definitely stay here again!

They "upgraded" us to a double, then when we were out for a couple hours, we come back and they added an employee to our room. Along with a stranger having access to all of our belonging, it was very awkward because we then had to share a bed and the employee didn't speak any English. Best: Hotel Nerva
Why: Umberto and Nalla were so much fun to chat with at breakfast. The night clerk was also very helpful in offering suggestions, getting cabs, etc. I would stay there again as well as recommend it to others going to Rome. A good value for our dollar, that's for sure. Appreciated getting the Rick Steves cash discount (109 Euros/night).
Worst:
Why: We only stayed at Hotel Nerva in Rome.

Best: Hotel Santa Maria
Why: If your wish is to explore the true side of Rome, this is the place to stay. The hospitality couldn't be better. Buffet every day from 4pm to 7pm. Cocktail service from noon to 10:00 PM. Completely remodeled and spotless. In the heart of Trastevere. Most relaxing atmosphere, and walking distance to most historical sights. With the Rick Steves rate, with the Rome book, I found this to be very affordable.

Best: Arco de'Tolomei, Trastevere, Rome
Why: Arco de' Tolomei is one of those rare guesthouses where you're made to feel like one of the family, like you're home from home. Marco and his family are such good hosts, so helpful and full of local knowledge and recommendations. The house itself is old and full of character, and the location is brilliant - right in the heart of Trastevere, firm beds, modern bathrooms, good hearty breakfast - but most important - great company! Would highly recommend it.

Best: Guest House Arco dei Tolomei
Why: This classical Roman townhouse, located only a few steps from the river in Trastevere, offers not only authentic and comfortable accommodation but welcomes you into the family, making your stay not only enjoyable but memorable. Nothing was too much to ask of Marco, Catia and Leena! And breakfast, the food generous and healthy, the hosts' conversation warm and entertaining, was the highlight of the day. I've found my home away from home in Rome!

Best: Apartment rental near Colosseum
Why: We felt a little less like tourists coming back to an apartment every day instead of a hotel room. Every grocery store trip was an adventure and we didn't have to have every meal in a restaurant.

Why: Staff was very helpful and friendly and the rooms were clean. They also offered to call a private car for me that was only five Euros more than a cab.

Best: Residenza Cellini
Why: A true gem in this busy city! Spotlessly clean, comfortable rooms, superb and incredibly attentive staff, lovely breakfasts, and a beautiful 5th-floor outdoor latticed terrace, where we enjoyed a 'carpet picnic' of Italian beer and pizza one night when we were all exhausted! The staff seemed to anticipate everything and even insisted on bringing plates, glasses, napkins and cutlery to us on a silver platter! They also checked our airline reservation for us the night before we left and had breakfast ready for us to enjoy 1/2 hour ahead of the usual time.

Best: Hotel Arco de Tolomei
Why: Marco and Gianna were amazing. Incredibly welcoming and warm. You would think that you were right at home in Rome. They had great restaurant recommendations for near by and things to see and do while we were there...who needs a Timeout when you have these two. But to top it off they shipped a suit I left back to me...free of charge. Service with a capital S. You can't go wrong here.

Best: Pensione Arco dei Tolomei, Roma Trastevere
Why: This charming pensione located in the very heart of Trsatvere is quite and peacefull. We love the small terraces of certain rooms, teh ideal location and on the top of that, the kindness and warmness of the hosts. we really felt that we were guests and not clients. Of course if you're attracted by design/trendy cold hotels, pick up another address but if you want to feel a part of rome, you must try it!

Best: Giuseppe Amorosi's Flats
Why: Giuseppe's apartment, as recommended by the graffiti wall, is a great location at huge savings. Plenty of street noise when the bars close at 2 am, however. Very basic accommodations, IKEA-type furnishings, not for everyone.

Best: Hotel Italia Roma
Why: The rooms were comfortable but the best part was the friendly, helpful people at their desk. They were always available with a wonderfully detailed map of Rome and specific suggestions for places to eat and how to get to our destinations. Their breakfast was also nice.

Best: Cross-pollinate
Why: We used this booking service and were more than satisfied with the result. A couple of tips: Many of the people who own the apartments don't live on site. Be sure you call 24 hours in advance and confirm what time you want them to meet you. Also, have the exact amount you owe them ready as you will need to pay immediately. We paid and never saw our landlord again for the 3 days we were there. (she did leave a number, but we had not problems so never needed to use it.) Of course, each apartment is owned by a different person, but cross-pollinate does inspect them. We were very satisfied with ours. When we arrived, we thought we were in the owner's unit and she would take us to ours. We were shocked when she said the huge apartment was what we had rented. The pictures did not do it justice. I would use cross-pollinate again.

Best: Hotel Parlamento
Why: Location, location, location! We enjoyed the convenience of this centrally located hotel. We had a small single room, with a full bath, and breakfast was included. The staff was friendly, and helpful. It was also nice to escape to the rooftop patio for a relaxing break after sightseeing. Reasonable price, clean, comfortable accommodations, great location.

Best: Hotel Nardizzi Americana
Why: The hotel was in a great location, easy to find and the rooms were very clean and comfortable. The hotel staff were all extremely pleasant, friendly and helpful. We were even able to attend a performance of the Rome Symphony that we would not have known about if the desk clerk had not suggested we might enjoy going.
