Gourmet Germany, Austria & Switzerland: 2006

When you take your tongue out sightseeing in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, what are its favorite taste treats?

Food Memories
Murten, Switzerland - I believe it was the L'Italia - best truffle pasta I have ever had - tiny stuffed pasta bags in a cream sauce. MMMMM! Locarno, Switzerland - Osteria Chiara -a fine dining experience, with the best of service from the owner, who put the bottle of wine on the table and then charged us for what we drank -this would never happen in North America! The salad and pasta were absolutely exquisite.

Good Italian Food in Vienna
Tired of eating Schnitzel in Vienna? Barbaro (not listed in Rick's guidebook), located at Neuer Markt 8 (Tel. 955 25 25) right outside the front door of one of Rick's recommended hotels (Pension Aviano) offers al fresco dining in warm weather, indoor seating if it is cool or damp. We found the Italian entrees and pizzas to be quite good and dined there twice during a five night stay in Vienna in Sept. '06

Good Viennese Cuisine
Restaurant Fuhrich (Furichgasse 6, Tel. 01/513 0880, www.fuehrich.at) is just one block from one Rick's recommended Vienna hotels (Pension Aviano) where we stayed. Decor is nice, atmosphere quiet, food is local Viennese cuisine and well prepared. We ate there twice during our five night stay in Sept. '06. (The restaurant is not in Rick's guidebook, but was recommended by the hotel).

Bauernmarkt, near Augsburg
After nearly two weeks in France, Germany and Austria, we were hungry for a good old American-style breakfast. Quite by chance we found the Bauernmarkt, just off the A-7, Exit 74 in Dasing, Germany, very near Augsburg. This wonderful, very clean, cafeteria-style "market" serves typical Bavarian fare, but also scrambled eggs and bacon and American-style coffee....a welcome change from the typical European breakfast (Though we enjoyed these as well). We liked the place so much that we came back that afternoon after visiting Dachau and had a delightful lunch, too.

Eating on the trail, Above Gimmelwald
Stayed at Walter's and took a hike to the Rotstockhutte, from Gimmelwald up past the Sprutz waterfall. We got rained on 2/3 of the way there and arrived very wet from our slickers down. The Rotstockhutte was warm and a little crowded and the Alpine macaroni was fantastic. Pasta similar to penne in a white sauce with bacon and chopped red onion sprinkled with herbs, my mouth waters just thinking about it. Well worth the hike and the soaking. August 2006

Eating in Bacharach, Germany

Hotel Casa Verde- Trier, Germany
Very German-sounding Hotel Casa Verde is a taste treat! We found it by accident, arriving by car late one Saturday evening in October. The room, for 69Euro a night was great, but the restaurant was even better! Oliver, our host told us dinner was "Mediterreanean" and it was great. Most memorable were the excellent spices on all the appetizers, and the main courses of beef and fish. The Creme Brulet was a great finish. For breakfast the next morning (included in the price) there was an excellent selection of juices, meats, cheeses, cereal and yogurt, with an egg frittata that was, again, spiced to perfection. I highly recommend the Hotel Casa Verde.

Salzburg Area Dining
While in Salzburg we took a loop trip to the Lake District to see Halstadt. On the way back we stopped in Strobl on the lake called Aber See. If you're going to see the church in Sankt Wolfgang you will probably drive right thru Strobl. We ate dinner in Strobl in Seegasthof Jenisch and what a treat it was. Excellent English-speaking wait staff. Excellent food - one of the best venison stews I've ever had and fresh fish from the lake. Our table was against a large window by which we saw the sun set behind the Alps.

Salzburg-Zum Wildemann
Salzburg.

We had a short layover in Salzburg and really lucked out with dinner at Zum Wildenmann Restaurant. The owner, Robert, is the true Wild Man but, a more affable, great story teller you'll never find. He sat down at our table and told us stories of how they developed the recipes (Grandma's Goulash and strudel recipe). Great food. Everybody there was part of the Zum Wildenmann family and by the end of the night, so were we. A great evening.

Our Favorites in Salzburg
The thing that we miss the most about Salzburg is definitely the tiny Balkan Grill and their delicious bosna sausages. If you are in Salzburg you MUST try one. It is a tiny stand in one of the corridors off of the main shopping street in the Alstadt (Getriedegasse?) and they are wonderful! We also loved the Augustiner Braustubl, and old monastery turned brew haus. Huge beer halls and huge, cheap beers! You can bring in your own food, buy it from one of the vendors outside, or just enjoy a tasty beer. We loved it!

Salzburg fast food
We have always liked Nordsee in Austria for a quick and healthy lunch. On our recent trip, we had a yummy fish salad at Nordsee in Graz, which totally lived up to our expectations, for 8.95 euro. The next day in Salzburg, once again we dipped into a Nordsee and once again pointed at what looked like the same salad. Much to our horror, this time it was 19.30 and 19.20 euro! (We both ordered it, since it had been so delightful the previous day.) It was served with at least a cup of marinade per dish, so we paid for the marinade, and perhaps we also paid for the dishes! Of course, we should have refused the salads when the prices were evident. Instead, we ate them joylessly, and later talked to the restaurant's manager, who could not have been less helpful. My advice: eat at Nordsee for a quick meal, but only order pre-priced servings so there will be no surprises at the cash register. This wasn't our most expensive meal of the trip, but it was the least fun.

Eating, Bacharach, Germany
Bacharach Germany Sept 2006- During our four day visit we had dinner twice at the Restaurant Rusticana, Oberstrasse 40 (middle of town on main street). We had delicious soup, salad and main course for less than 10 Euros plus the homemade apple strudel that we couldn't resist. The setting is a small, cozy family restaurant, "an extension of our living room." The owner is a horse breeder, and he and his wife have run restaurants for 40 years.

eating in Krems
We took Rick's advice and stayed at Melanie Stasnys while in Krems. She recommended dinner next door at 24 Landstrasse and it was the best meal we had in Europe! The menu was in German, but our host graciously helped us with the language and made great recommendations. In addition, he was funny and kind--at the end of our evening gave us a bottle of wine as a gift to us! We had a great time and even fonder memories of that gentleman's kindness to us. I would go back in a heartbeat!

lunches and snacks
We just returned from a river cruise on the Danube, stopping at Nuremberg, Regensberg, Passau, Melk, Vienna, and Budapest. Even though we ate most of our meals on the ship, we were able to eat a few meals and snacks along the way. We really loved the 3 Wurst Wekkas in Nuremberg at the Bratwursthaeusle. (Three sausages on a roll for only 1.80 EUR.) If only we could have stayed inside by the fire! We wolfed them down on the bus! Also in Nuremberg, we bought lebkucken because everyone says theirs is the best. It is the best I've ever tasted! We bought tins of it from a shop right on the square near the "beautiful fountain". Delicious! In Passau we had lunch at Jodeln Wirt. The cook comes out and sings and yodels for you. The Weiner Schnitzel and warm potato salad was the best my husband ever had. So was the apple strudel with vanilla sauce. We had gelato in either Passau or Regensberg, and it was great. I asked the girl what a Heidelbeere was. She didn't know the English word, but she brought out the box - blueberries! I had the Baci flavored. It was wonderful - just like Perugina baci candies. In Vienna we had lunch at the Hotel Sacher. It was a really elegant experience. Luckily, we only had the "small plates" for lunch, because we unknowingly ordered the dessert sampler for 2 people for dessert. It was a tower, and could have easily served 3 or 4! Everything was delicious. (Of course we finished it.)One thing we noticed was that the desserts we tried in Germany, Austria, and Hungary were all delicious, but not nearly as sweet as in the states. You could actually taste the flavor! We have one caveat, along with a question: In several of the towns, I tried to buy a bottle of water. In the case were various types of soda, juice, and flavored water. There would also be a bottle of what looked like plain bottled water. Then I noticed on the label, in tiny letters near the bottom, IN GERMAN, "contains sauerkraut juice". We both said, "yuk" and didn't buy it. My question is, why would anyone want to drink that, and where do you buy normal Evian water, or something similar? The caveat is to make sure you don't get sauerkraut juice in your water unless you want it. Oh, well. I know a lot of Americans who like Gatorade.

German Hotel+Brewery+Restaurant=Heaven!
I recently stayed at the Sperber Brau in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, in Bavaria. Rooms are small, but very nice, clean, and modern. Cheap, too, at 47 euro per night for a single. They brew onsite and the beers are excellent; the food in the gasthaus downstairs is equally good. Tables outside on the veranda from which to watch the world go by. Definitely a place to which I will return. Their website is: http://www.sperberbraeu.de/frame.htm Careful, VERY little English spoken by the staff, but I never went either hungry or thirsty!

Great food in Krakow, Poland
I didn't see a category for Poland so I am going to make my Krakow recommendation here: Smak Ukrainski, ul. Kanonicza, 31-002, a small Ukrainian place between the castle and the square. It is a little hidden place down a hall and down stairs, there is a sign outside. It is decorated with country antiques, the people are very sweet and the food is marvelous; the best borscht and blintzes I've ever had but a huge menu if that doesn't appeal. I would have eaten there every day but I only found it on my last day there.

Gasthaus Klausnerhof, Austria
We stayed at Gasthaus Klausnerhof at the top of Thurn Pass in Mittersill (or Jochburg), Austria. Halfboard was about 10 euros more than the b&b price, so we took advantage of it. The meals were superb. Prepared by a real chef, our dinners were 4 course meals including such fare as turkey schnitzel with home-made fries and gravy, lamb chops, venison, trout - all accompanied by home made soups, salads and desserts. From our window seating, we watched hang gliders below us or clouds roll up to our level. The owners personally served us and kept checking to make sure the food was acceptable. It was a totally delightful experience!

Place to stay away from!
One of my life's most horrible experiences has been at the Tham restaurant in Murren. Having read a previous review on how "good" the restaurant was, we decided to go there while in Murren. The owner was easily the most discourteous man I have ever seen in my life. He grumblingly served us lunch. When he asked us for our feedback on the food, we told him that the food was not great. He almost threw us out of the place. Unfortunately, that was the only place that serves RICE, and when we went back in the evening to pick up some plain rice, he refused to serve us and made racial remarks. PLACE to stay away from!

RESTAURANT UPDATE!!

We recently spent two night in Reutte per Rick's recommendation while visting the castles and ate dinner at a restaurant mentioned in Rick's Guide, Storfwit. This restaurant was nowhere near as described as it was recently taken over by Rainer Katzensteiner and Martin Jager. To be short and to the point, it was fantastic. The food was fabulous and affordable, the wine list extensive and impressive, and the service outstanding and attentive. Rainer Katzensteiner runs the restaurant and proved to be an ideal host who spoke fluent english and Martin Jager is the man in front of the stove who created exquisite dishes. If your in Reutte overnight this is one restaurant that you'd be foolish to miss.

Sankt Goar restaurant
An earlier poster asked for restaurant recommendations for the Rhein area. For excellent food in Sankt Goar, go to the Flairhotel Landsknecht, on the Rhein, just a km or so north of "downtown" Sankt Goar. The food is wonderful, the view of the river and Burg Maus is spectacular, they produce their own wine, which also is stellar. Prices are reasonable, too. Any of the pork dishes will be memorable.

Two Superb Vienna Restaurants
Steirereck and Salm Bräu are Vienna restaurants that we enjoyed enormously, though they are at different ends of the price spectrum.

At Steirereck im Stadtpark, we had the prix fixe 4-course lunch (courses are also available ala carte). Request a table in the inside dining room. The food was exquisite and the service meticulous. This restaurant is expensive, but IMHO worth every Euro! You can make reservations at steirereck.at.

Salm Bräu is a much more moderately priced restaurant-brewery frequented by locals and located near the lower Belvedere museum. The specialty Surstellze (a crusty, salty ham roast served with mustard and horseradish) feeds 2 people. We ordered salads, pretzels, and beer to accompany it. For dessert don't miss the "Mohr in Hemd". You can check out the menu -- in English -- at www.salmbraeu.com.

Firewurst in Regensberg
One of my favorite and illusive things that I found in Germany was in the Christmas Market in Regensberg. They had a sausage called Firewurst..Essentailly a horseradish bratwurst. Great cafe in Berlin
In searching for a cafe in Berlin with free internet access, I came across a real gem in Prenzlauer Berg called Cafe MIA. Not only is there free internet, but it is one of the only restaurants in town that is completely non-smoking. It is owned by a very friendly married couple in their twenties. The husband is Indian and the wife is a native Berliner. As a result, the menu has a real Indian-fusian feel. I especially recommend the Kaffee Indische, which is a latte with Indian spices.

Their address is Pappelallee 58 and the closest U/S-Bahn stop is Schoenhauser Allee.

Fussen- Amazing Restaurant
I have several personal favorite restaurants throughout Europe. One of my absolute favorites is in Fussen, Germany. I cannot remember the name but I can give perfect directions. If you are at the Bahnhof take a left and walk towards the downtown area (only about a 1/4 mile tops) There are two main cobblestone streets on the right. Take the second cobblestone pedestrian only street, then take an immediate left and the little restaurant is on the right, right at the corner. If you are facing the door of the restaurant, there is a another restaurant on your left with a knight statue out front and it's next to a Backery. It's a very cozy little restaurant, with traditional decoration. The chadalliers are made of antlers. The roast pork, with potatoes, and bread dumplings, is fantastic. The pork is so juicy and full of flavor. I have gone to this restaurant on 4 seperate trips to Europe, so I highly reccomend it. If your travels happen to bring you to Fussen, then I hope you get the chance to experience this cozy little restaurant. Enjoy!

P.S. If anyone tries it out, let me know :)

a surprising delight at the Freud Cafe! Vienna
The Freud Cafe, just below the Freud Museum is a great place to grab a lunch.

We were hesitant to stop, as the name and locale were kind of warning signs for a touristy place, but we were hungry so we went in.

The food was delicious and was all made by the sweet woman who seated us and other guests between running back to the kitchen and coming to each table checking to see if the food was ok.

She didn't speak a lot of English, but was EXTREMELY friendly and appreciative of our attempts at German.

The decor was cool - funky art renditions of Freud. The hot chocolate was simply to die for and my soup was great. I'd recommend any item - all 5 of us ordered and enjoyed something different!

Meersburg and surroundings
Meersburg is quite beautiful, quite easy to reach, and therefore out of the beaten track no more. It is quite touristy, but nevertheless worth your visit. If you like it more in a calm way, Hagnau or Uhldingen-Mühlhofen might be your place.

If you want to be off the beaten track: Deggenhauser Tal or the village Deggenhausertal some 20 km off, located beautifully in a hilly landscape of meadows and woods, settled with small villages where you find those Wirtshäuser and Gaststätten serving for the locals and those who know. Do some further google research on "Deggenhausertal" if you are interested.

Meersburg is a wine growing area. If you want to get some wine right from the producer, do some google research on "Winzerverein Meersburg" and on "Staatsweingut Meersburg".

Dining in Berlin
Besides its quintessential Currywurst and Doner, I highly recommend visiting one of Berlin's dark restaurants. My friend took me to one (Nocti Vagus, http://www.noctivagus.de/) and I cannot wait to go back there again. I won't elaborate for fear of spoiling, but it's truly a unique experience. The food's not bad either, pre-fixe menu comes with a drink before and after dinner. Plan to spend at least 3-4 hour to savor the experience and do reserve in advance.

Also Leysieffer Pastry Shops offer some of the best Apfelstrudel around. I went to the one on Friedrichstraße, but I think there are several around Berlin.

Both of these options are not the most frugal but worth splurging, imho.

Murren, Switzerland
I can't wait to return to Murren (just up the hill from Gimmelwald) for a feast at Tham's Chinese Snacks! Switzerland is very expensive - especially for eating dinner out, but in luzern / lucerne my friend and i found an amazing thai food restaurant that was pretty cheap and the best thai food i've ever had! Easy Food to Go!
Every time I go to Germany (twice a year to visit my fiance), I can't pass up eating two Germany specialties that are easy to find and oh so good!

Currywurst is excellent: it's a simple, inexpensive treat of a sausage on a roll, served with curry ketchup. We buy it from vendors on the street, and it quickly became one of the tastes of Germany that I miss terribly when I return to the US.

When in Bavaria, look for Leberkase. It's basically a slice of spiced pork meatloaf on a roll, served with sweet mustard. It may not look like much, but trust me - it's definitely worth a try!

germany for vegetarians
I am also predominantly vegetarian. We travel to Germany 2 or 3 times a year, and I have noticed more and more vegetarian food each time. Sometimes the vittalmenu is available. I think it means healthy food. I have noticed that breakfast displays now feature puten lunchmeat--think turkey bologna but better. And don't forget the beautiful salads, bauernsalat in particular. And some regions serve lovely fish. If you learn the words for the meats, you will be able to decipher the menus. I recommend the German in 10 Minutes a Day workbook. It has a menu translation in the back that is very helpful. You can buy it at most major bookstores.

German Vegetarian?
My wife and I will be traveling to Germany this summer and as excited as we are, the one "worry" hanging over the trip is that my wife is predominantly Vegetarian. Mettwurst for Karneval
One of the most unusual pork-based snacks I have ever eaten is Mettwurst. Basically it is freshly ground pork specially cured for eating like beefsteak tartar. And it is eaten on top of a half a breadroll. So far many others I have spoken to about Mettwurst, including myself, have suffered none of the usual ill effects of eating "raw" pork, so generally it is safe to eat Mettwurst, if it is freshly prepared.
