Best restaurant in Zermatt
I want to recommend Grill Stockhorn on Riedstrasse 11, Zermatt. The grill is fantastic. My partner had the pork chop, seriously, i have neve tasted such good, juicy pork chop before. I had the rissotto with mushroom cooked in truffle oil. it's simply delicious! We ordered one glass of wine and a glass of beer, the total bill comes to around SF50.
We stoped in Bacharach (Rhine River) and we found a really friendly pleace to eat, the "Cafehaus Stiel". unfortunaly, It´s a new renovated old Café (about 500 years old) with a nice modern atmosphere. My wife decided to have a "Flammkuchen" and I´d try the baguette with ham and salad. Everything was homemade and fresh... maybe the best food we had during our 3 week trip across Germany!! Even the Espresso I had after my meal was the best one outside Italia, belive me... good flavour and damn strong! Visit the place if you near by Bacharach... I´s worth it, and the prices for food and drinks are really cheap in that area!

Eating well in Switzerland is expensive and especially so in St. Moritz, but we tucked away three delicious dinners at the non-descipt restaurant beneath Hotel Bellavu near the train station. Friendly staff, comfortable atmosphere, and excellent food. I still dream about the rosti with chees and tomato, my husuband loved his with sausage, we shared fondu one night, but the pastas, kebabs, and local dishes were equally tempting and beautifully presented to happy diners.

Edelweiss is an excellent restaurant in Frankfurt's Sachenhausen District right on the main street--Schwizer Strasse 96. They had some good choices for vegetarians and for those who were "porked" out from eating in Germany for a week.

Ofenloch Restaurant Vienna
My favorite restaurant in Vienna is the Ofenloch. A little hard to find, on a small street behind a church but well worth it. Wonderful food and great atmosphere.
New York, NY USA Wed 05/20/2009
In Vienna, my cabdriver suggested trying AM SCHNITZELWIRT on the Neubaugasse. You can get here on a bus, or trudge uphill from the Neubaugasse UBahn exit. All I can say is you receive a mixed salad and two gigantic (but not gross or greasy) schnitzels, and a fresh local beer, for about ten euros. Plus, you are seated at any open table. In my case I sat with families, and a number of lovely ladies on tour. Yes, I went back, after the first visit. No, I did not have the double schnitzel portion!

Be sure to visit Baden-Baden while in Germany. The spas provide the perfect opportunity to decompress for the travel weary. Follow this up with a sumptuous dinner at Weinstube im Baldreit. Philippe Fouille provides 5-star cuisine at a very reasonable price.

Cheap and Delicious Eats in Rothenburg
When in Rothenburg ob der Tauber the best meal deal in town is found at the Alter Keller, an atmospheric pub tucked away in a little square in the heart of town. (Ask a local) The homemade sausages and sauerkraut along with bread and a beer can be had for under 10 Euro. If you have room, the apple strudel is the best in town. (And homemade while most of the stuff served in other places is frozen!)

Sodas in Germany, Austria, Switzerland
You don't have to depend on Coke products while in Central Europe (Fanta, although not common in the US, is an orange lemonade made by Coke). In Austria try Almdudler, a herbal lemonade. In Switzerland try Rivella and in Germany have a Bionade or two...
Frankfurt am Main, Germany Thu 04/16/2009
good place in Munich
When in Munich, stop in Dallmayr. There is a restaurant upstairs, but downstairs there is a sort of upscale deli/ grocery. Everything we bought was wonderful. There are wonderful cheeses, bread, deli meats, produce, sushi, candy, liquors and wines, even cigars. Most of what we bought there ended up as presents for friends back home.

To: Robert/German Mustard Tubes
I had a similar lapse of common sense last Thanksgiving, when my husband and I mad a mad-dash to Germany. We bought bottles of his favorite salad dressing, which is not available in the states (or at least not around here). We got several tubes of mustard as well. I packed it all in the small hard-shell case, intending to check the bag. Long story short, I forgot that bag HAD to be checked and took it as carry-on. I avoided your fate by bopping myself on the head and saying "Ach! Bin doof!!" They laughed and sent me on my merry way back to the beginning to check the bag, and then expressed me back through, each attendant laughing heartily at my Fehler. But, I got to keep my delicious mustard. All's well that ends well!

Best Black Forest Cake!
For the best Black Forest Cake, of course you have to go to the Black Forest. In the small town of Triberg, is Cafe Shafer, which is easy to find along the one main street in town. They advertise in the window that they still use the original Black Forest Cake recipe! It really was unlike any other version of the Black Forest Cake that I have tried before, and it was certainly worth it! The only warning is that it tasted as if more than just, as Rick Steves says, "a little bit of Schnapps" was used.

Klein Markt Halle in Frankfurt
When you are in Frankfurt, make sure you go to the Klein Markt Halle. Beautiful, wonderful produce, breads, cheeses, fresh pasta, international food products, meats, wild meats, seafood & including live fish in the basement! You can buy lunch from the various butchers or delis while there, as all the locals do. Upstairs is a little restaurant with very reasonable prices and local food items on the menu. Towards the back and upstairs, is a wine bar.

FYI German food costs ??
we found dinner with glass of wine about 15-18 dollars in Rural central Germany. Portions large and if there longer would have done some splitting with an extra salad .

Alp Kaese in the USA?
I LOVED the Alp Kaese in Suzi's B & B in Interlaken and the Kaese at Fruhstuck at Gusthof zum Schluxen in Austria. The problem is, I can't find anything similar once I got back to the states. Does the Alp Cheese not get exported to the US? I've seen a few in our supermarket, but they just weren't the same.
