Turkey to Greek Isles
My wife and I are just preparing to go on the Rick's Turkey tour in May. After the tour we want to go to Samos or Rhodes. We have been unable to find connections except flying to Istanbul then Athens then fly/sail to Rhodes or Samos. Does any one know of ferry or plane connections between the Turkish coast near Kusadasi (or Izmir) and off shore Greek islands of Rhodes or Samos? Any ideas? Thanks a lot.

Venice Hotel
Locanda Orseolo I have been an avid Rick Steve's fan for years. Having spent the better part of a year as an expat in Belgium in 1998, my family travelled to many countries in Europe using Rick's advice and were always delighted by his suggestions! Now we are headed back to Italy in the Spring — Venice (our first time). I am breaking tradition in selecting a hotel that was not in Rick's 2004 Venice guide (which of course we have read cover to cover in preparation). It is called Locanda Orseolo — and has received rave reviews on other Web sites. Does anyone have any experience with this hotel and I wonder if it is so good, reasonably priced and out of the way, why Rick does not include it in his book?!?

Florence, Sienna, place to stay
I will have 6 days in Italy with my two children (ages 3 and 16).Our trip starts in Paris, with plans to take the overnight train to Italy. I am not familiar with Italy. Would it be better to stay in Florence or Sienna and take day trips to Rome,Venice, and Florence? Does anyone have a favorite hotel or apt at any of these locations? My experience in travelling with kids, is to pick a home base and take day trips. Any suggestions would be appreciated., Thanks.

Short stay in London
Our frequent flyer program requires that we route our US-Italy trip through London, with an overnight layover that we hope to extgend to 2-3 nights. Should we stay near Heathrow and travel to London proper, or should we stay more central to the sites and travel to airport on day of afternoon flight?

STOCKHOLM AND HELSINKI
Susan...getting from the airport to the downtown rr station is easy and quick. One of the airlines (I think it is Finnair) has a bus that will whisk you there. Ask anyone in the lobby where to catch it just outside the main entrance. It is about a 30 minute ride. Just check your bags and hop on. Most of the interesting things to see are within walking distance of the rr station. If you want a great meal in Helsinki visit Stockman's Dept Store and go up to the restaurant where you will be amazed at the delicious meals you can choose from. We were in Helsinki several times and only ate meals at that place!

Stockholm in March
In winter I'd see the Vasa ship (Vasa museum), the city hall, the royal Armory (located underneath the royal castle) in addition to the royal caste in Gamla Stan in addition to the medieval museum. Museums in Sweden almost always have excellent descriptions in English. The Armory and Vasa are my favorite. There are tours in Eng. at the Vasa museum. At the armory I'd get the taped guide. Try to go with one of the live guides if you are able. Stockholm has a website Stockholmtown.com. If you buy a Stockholm card you get free public transportation (subway and bus) and free entry to all these sights. The price for the museums range in the $8 to $10 per museum, so the card is a great deal. I am denied access, but if you have any more questions you can always try to contact me. There is so much more to Sweden than Stockholm though, but Stockholm is wonderful, it's called Venice of the North, because of all the waterways. Dress warmly and you'll enjoy Stockholm, the people who live there do.

ATMs in Italy
I have been using ATM cards for several years in Italy — and both my card with a 4 digit code, and another with 5 digits have worked fine for the most part. I agree with a previous post that if one machine isn't working for you, you need usually walk not very far in major centres to find one that will.

Paris: Hotel de Senlis review?

Babies in the Uffizi & Borghese?
I will be going to Italy with my wife and 1 year-old son in March. We would like to visit the Uffizi in Florence and the Borghese Gallery in Rome. ATM Cards
One more comment about ATM usage: Last summer I tried to use our ATM card in England with no luck. The problem was it was a "local" card with no VISA emblem on it. Just last month I applied for a new ATM card WITH the VISA logo. Be sure to check this out!

ATM CARD USAGE
Using your ATM card is the only way to buy foreign currency. As for the fee, I have never paid more than 1% because that is my bank's charge. You will NOT pay between 2 and 3% unless your bank charges that much. Call your bank and ask how much your total fee will be when you buy foreign currency. You may be surprised.

Italy Itinerary Question and Computer Voltage Answer
Planning to do (very) budget travel in Italy late March through mid April. Probably can spend 2-3 weeks, quite flexible on where to fly in and out. Definitely want to see Rome, Florence, Siena, Cinque Terre, and maybe Venice. How long would those places take? Any suggested iteneraries?

To answer someone else's question, I'm a student in London myself and didn't need a converter for my computer — check the little box on your power cable — if it says the input is 110-220 (I'm sure Dell's do this), then it'll handle the UK voltage — all you need is a plug adapter. You can get those at hardware stores here, but they may be cheaper in the US.

Lana: Building 10 day itinerary for Italy
I would probably fly in/out of Rome (fewer connections means fewer opportunities for late flights, lost luggage, etc). Get to Rome and do Pompeii as a day trip. Then head out of (expensive) Rome for some time in a (less expensive) Tuscan village — you could do day trips to Florence, Siena or simply enjoy Tuscany. A couple days before your return flight — head back to Rome to enjoy the sights.
Pat
Louisville, KY   USA   01/29/04

Stacy: Bellagio or Cinque Terre
I agree with Tom — the real issue is trying to squeeze Rome, Florence and Venice (plus another stop!) in 10 — 11 days. Assume you'll make it back to Italy sometime. Focus on a couple sites — so you can take time enough to enjoy them. If you need to keep moving, I would do either Venice, Florence and Cinque Terre or Rome, Florence and, perhaps, a short stop in a small Tuscan town. Personally, my trips have been slower paced (combined Venice and Cinque Terre for 8 days; combined Rome and Amalfi for 8 days).

Bellagio or the Cinque Terre
To Stacy: I have been to both Bellagio and Cinque Terre. Each is delightful in it's unique way, but very different. I would suggest that the real issue is trying to do Rome, Venice and Florence in 10-11 days, much less adding another sight. You might get it all in, but if you do you will probably need a few days rest when you get home! If you do throw in the CT or Bellagio, I'd probably opt for the CT. Lots to see in a compact area. Italy is a treat. Have a great trip.

ATM Card Usage
I agree with most of Carlos's posting concerning ATM usage but do have two comments. First, always try to use ATM machines located outside of banks during banking hours and avoid the stand alone machine in airport, train stations, street corners, etc. If you have problem with the ATM outside a bank, you can walk into the bank and solve the problem. With a stand alone machine you are out of luck if something bad happens. Second, receiving the "international rate" is a misconception. You WILL pay between 2 and 3 percent to use the ATM. BUT, it still the cheapest and most convenient way to obtain foreign currency.

Apex Car Rental (Easy Fleet) in the UK
Has anyone ever hired a car in the UK through Apex Car Rental (http://www.apexcarrental.co.uk)? Their long-term rental, called Apex Easy Fleet, sounds like a great deal, but, as we're looking for a car for five weeks, I'm hesitant to book without assurance that I'd be dealing with a good (read: trustworthy, stable) company. Have you ever heard of Apex? If you've rented from them, what was your experience? Would you rent from them again? Thank you!

ATM CARDS.... WHITEY
Since I have used my ATM card in over 10 countries, including Thailand and Russia, I can recommend your using yours in Italy and France. Your will find machines almost everywhere. If you don't see one outside a bank, ask anyone and they can tell you where the nearest one is. Occassionally I have found a machine which would not take my Pulse, Star or Cirrus card, but another few steps down the street produced one. You will find them in some post offices, train stations, banks, airports, dept stores and hotels. They are much easier to use that travelers checks and much cheaper because you get the international bank exchange rate.

Italy: Bellagio or Cinque Terre?
My husband and I are traveling to Italy in July. It will be his first time overseas, and my first time in Italy since age 12. We've got limited time (about 10-11 days), and are planning to see Rome, Venice and Florence. I'd like to add a smaller, more scenic village for an overnight. I was thinking Bellagio or one of the Cinque Terre. Could anyone who's had experience with both of these make a recommendation? (We're also on a budget, of course, so that's a consideration!!)

Rome — how noisy are streets
We found the major streets to be very noisy — all the time. There are tons of cars, but the real noise comes from the seemingly hundreds of motor scooters that are everywhere. If you do stay on a major street, take Rick Steves' advice and ask for a room at the back of the hotel.

Finding a room in Athens for Olympics
I am a 26 year old American Olympics 2004 volunteer. Does anyone know anyone or where I could find someone in the Athens area who would be willing to house a volunteer? I can't get reservations because the Olympic Committee won't give me any solid dates as to when I need to be there, just to "Be Ready" a couple of weeks before the event. Italian Riviera or Cinque Terre?
I expect to travel to Nice, France for business, but hope to spend the first weekend sightseeing in Northwest Italy. My flight arrives in Nice at 13:35 on Friday. And I can stay in Italy until early Monday or Tuesday (schedule isn't set yet) morning, if I am in a town near the French border. I'm wondering whether I should explore the towns right over the border (e.g., Ventimiglia, Bordighera, Dolceacqua, maybe up to Finale Ligure)? Or whether I should spend more of my time on trains to be able to visit the Cinque Terre? According to bahn.de, it's about an extra 5 hours of train rides each way (for a total of ~10 hours), which seems a bit much when I only have a little more than two or three days to sightsee.

I've seen several people on the graffiti wall recommend the train ride from Nice to Genova as quite scenic, so it might be a great train ride, but I think I might want to get out and walk around before I reach Genova. What segments of the train ride from Nice to Genova are particularly good? Would I miss much if I only went from Nice to Finale Ligure? What if I only went from Nice to Ventimiglia? Are the Cinque Terre significantly nicer than the other towns west of Genova? How long would I need to be able to spend in Cinque Terre to make it worthwhile? Thanks.

RE: Germany for 1st timers
You might want to try pricing out your trip by train at www.bahn.de and then comparing it to car rental prices. My husband and I traveled Amsterdam, Belgium, Germany in September 2003 and used the train until we reached Cologne where we picked up a rental car for stops in the Rhine, Rothenburg and Bavaria and then dropped it off in Munich and used the train again. The stops we made WERE accessible by train but required connections, etc. and we just felt it would be easier to have a car for this segment of the trip. If you decide to travel by train, second class is very clean, comfortable, etc. Have a wonderful trip!

RE: Quick Amsterdam detour sights
You might want to check out www.hollandtoursschiphol.nl if you think you might enjoy taking an arranged tour from the airport during your layover. Or, as it is a short train ride to the city, you may wish to just go and explore on your own. The canal boats depart very close to the train stations and give a good overview of the city. The Red Light district, Damrak and Anne Frank House are all within walking distance from the train station, however, I would suggest taking a tram from the train station if you think you would like to visit the Rijks or Van Gogh during your time in town. Best of luck!

Quick Amsterdam detour sights
I will be in Amsterdam Saturday March 27 for about a 5 and a half hour (a layover). Rather than sit in the airport waiting, I wondered if there is any sort of "must see" in the city that I can do within 3 to 4 hours? Like a couple museums within in close proximity of each other. Or a possible quick walking tour to stretch the legs and see some quick sights. Any tips would be much appreciated!

Leslie — London walks
Jack the Ripper Tour — Highly recommend, great for teens, my girls loved it. Not for small children (obviously). Be warned these walks are so popular that lots of companies offer them. Recommend Original London Walks — their website is http://www.walks.com We had an Irish actress lead ours, she was spellbinding. They have endless numbers of walks of all kinds, we liked them so much we took their day tour to Oxford and Cotswalds, good alternative for independent travelers who want a break from daily decision making.

Dan — Night train Inverness and London
Try Scotrail's Caledonian sleeper. It leaves London at night and arrives in Inverness in the morning, same for the return. The website is Scotrail.co.uk. You can get a family ticket, which gives you two adjoining rooms with two bunks each. We did this last July, costs around L290 if you snap up the family ticket as soon as it becomes available on the internet (they only sell them around 6 weeks in advance). The rooms are small, they do a lot of car switching in the middle of the night which might disturb a light sleeper. Also, we found Scotrail to be very casual about timetables and such, our return train was several hours late. But still it was lots of fun and if you aren't uptight you will enjoy it. Loved Inverness, wish we'd spent longer there.

USA — Chamonix: June/July '02

I spent 8 happy days in Chamonix. Expect it to be crowded if you are there in any season that can be described as "ski". It was busy but unfrenetic when I was there. A cafe called Irish Coffee was friendly and served tasty meals. From Paris Chamonix can be reached by train but it will require much of a day and several changes of train. Each change gets you a smaller and slower train but the scenery steadily improves. A tiny room in a one star hotel with enormous views of the aguilles and a shared bath cost about $30 per night — but, of course, the $ was rather stronger then. Go and enjoy.

Children free at Paris Museums
Regarding who buys Paris Museum passes — children are free at many museums in Paris i.e. Musee dOrsay & Louvre. My husband & I bought the museum passes and we all entered together without waiting in line. Sometimes they would ask how old the kids were (they were teens-and most museums are free for "under 18) and I don't think they ever asked for evidence, but I carried passports in case. We thought the museum passes were a great time saver in the summer months.

Paris Museum Pass
My question is similar to Steve's. Four of us will be in Paris this summer and was planning on buying each of us a museum pass. However, my wife is a teacher and my daughters are both students (17 & 20). Would we be wasting money buying museum passes for all four of us? But then what about the lines? Would we have to go in different entrances? Thanks for responding. If you have any suggestions about the paris museum pass please email me or leave the answer on here for others to see. Thanks

THERE IS NO NEED TO BUY IN ADVANCE BECAUSE YOU SELDOM HAVE TO RESERVE SEATS. BUY A SECOND CLASS TICKET. IF THE COACH IS TOO CROWDED, UP GRADE WHEN THE CONDUCTOR COMES THROUGH YOUR CAR.

A room with a bath and a shower
I have a question about Rick Steves' guidebooks. I've been wondering about hotel rooms with bath and shower only. What does a room with a bath (ex: Db) mean? This one I understand has a toilet in the bathroom too, is that right? What does a room with a shower only (ex: Ds) mean? Does it mean only shower stall but no toilet and sink?

Paris Airport shuttle
John- In contrast to Bob's experience with Blue Van, they were horrible when I took it back in Sept 03. I had to wait for 90mins (someone else in the van waited for 2hrs) while each time I called them they told me the van was "coming". Finally when it came, the driver had the nerve to make a 20min detour to his house to pick up lunch for himself! When I came home I emailed the company to complain, and never heard a word back from them. On my way back to CDG, I took Airport Connection and they were great. Does anyone know the best way to get from CDG airport in Paris to the city center (french quarter)? There will be two of us and we will be buying a week-long Metro Pass which I understand is also good for the RER. Pat — Tuscany Travel
It is better to fly into Florence since it is in Tuscany but look for the best airline price , Rome is only two hours from Florence. It is cheaper to rent a car in town than at the airport (airport surcharge is usually about 12%)and trains are cheap and easy. Tuscany is too big to see in one trip. One location is easier on you than packing and moving. If you want more info e-mail me hschulte47@yahoo.com

Getting Around Tuscany
Pat: We found it very convenient to fly into Milan to visit Tuscany. We traveled all over Italy, so we were open to any airport. Milan had the best airfares (at least from Detroit), and was an easy car trip from Tuscany. The roads are excellent throughout Tuscany. Paris to Chambord
My daughter and I would like to take a couple of short trips from Paris this summer, keeping Paris as our home base for all but a day or 2. We would like to take the Chunnel into London on "Leisure Day Trip" tickets — leaving just after "rush hour" and returning the same. We would also like to see Giverny and Versailles — I understand both are easy to get to. However, we're having trouble deciding on a mode of transportation to the Loire. I would like to stay overnight at the Grand St. Michel at Chambord. And I've heard about this "sixti" rental car that is dirt cheap (5-10 euros/day)! So if I could rent the car out of Orly for 2 days, I should be well able to keep the mileage under the @250k per day allowance and see Chambord (free parking at the hotel, by the way) via Chartres? Or is there something wonderful in the nearer Blois? And is there an easier way to get from Paris to Blois? I am having a hard time making a decision on this.... any suggestions?

Rome Sights
Barbara...The Boca del Verita is in Santa Maria in Cosmedin on a piazza by the same name (BDV). It is actually close to the Roman Forum but you will have to go down the steps from the Campidoglio (Capital Hill), turn left and follow the street around almost to the Tiber. A good map will show you. The Moses is in San Pietro in Vincoli (At. Peter in Chains), a small church up on the hill behind the Coloseum. Again, your map will show it. You just had the names wrong. This is probably not the right forum for info about tour groups since most of ETBD folks are independent travelers. However, you can get train schedules from http://62.110.170.238/welcome.html. There are group rates and the best source is a Roma travel agent before you go. There is no advantage to buying them here. Someone else on this site might help with a tour. I would strongly suggest you buy a copy of Rick Steves Italy 2004. It has answers to all the questions you have asked and will save you money and time. Plus, it supports this website.

Need help with the Baltics
Ok, I've got most of my purchases done. I've contacted my doctor for my shots. I've scoured Rick Steves sight (along with MANY others). I've bombarded my friends who have traveled with a hundred questions. My itinerary is in it's final stages of planning. Yet here I am planning on taking a brief trip (4 — 6 days) to see the Baltics (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) leaving from Berlin or northeastern Germany and I don't know how to get there! Can someone please give me some detailed insight on traveling in the Baltics??? I presume it is best by train but I could rent a car if I have to. As that is an added expense (and big liability) I'd rather not, but I will if I must. My Eurorail timetable is no help (Baltics not included). Also, any generic information regarding the Baltics would be greatly appreciated. I will be there hopefully in late April to early May. Thank you in advance for the help.

Return ticket needed to enter UK (or other countries)
I am planning a trip to Europe this Spring. I will be arriving in London around the end of April but do not know where or when I will be returning home to Canada. This being the case, I figured I would buy a one-way ticket to London, then buy another one way ticket to get back home from where-ever I'll be at that time. I've heard from some sources that I will not be allowed to enter the country w/o a return flight ticket. I've also heard from different sources that that is not correct, and that as long as I can show that I have enough funds for the duration of my trip I'll be O.K. David — airfare to Germany
July is a tough month to find a good fare, but you'll find something better than $950. Just be patient. Most airlines aren't yet ready to give away the store at this time of year, but when it starts to look like they'll have trouble filling seats — and this WILL be a problem this year with the weak dollar — you will see some sales; just be vigilant after about mid-February. I have flown several times to Germany from the west coast and never paid more than $550; I paid about $525 in mid-July '03 for SFO-FRA. Check www.travelzoo.com frequently as well as the flights discussion board at www.eurotrip.com (also a good place to ask questions about what you should be paying at what time, etc.) I bought some bestfares tickets a number of years ago — they are REALLY a hassle to deal with, though, and you can probably do just as well elsewhere. Also: You might look into cheap fares to London, which come about more often, then fly Ryanair or another discount airline into Germany.

Pat, A good question that does not get much dialogue on the Graffitti wall. Economics — how many in your party? The more travelers via a car rental the more economical it becomes. Freedom — a car rental will take in any direction whenever you wish Time — the on-demand benefit of a car rental will save LOTS of time versus managing a public trans schedule Meeting the local folks — not going to happen when you drive for obvious reasons. ? — do you enjoy driving. Can you cope with the adventures of navigating/"getting lost"/wondering why the rest stop restrauants all serve beer, wine & spirits. Sights — a car rental may enable you to visits off the beaten path sites where public transportation is infrequent or challeging. Tuscany and Umbria are wonderful roadtrip destinations — the small towns, villages, etc. are a real treat and often missed by those who are staying in the larger cities (Florence, Siena, Milan). OK — I'll fess up. 6 trips in the past 8 years and we always have enjoyed drivining. OBTW — Whenever possible avoid driving in the cities CraigSC

Airfairs to Germany
try justfares.com. They're very busy but if you get a specific flight you might want to book go and call them with the specifics. You might need to keep on calling back until you get a "live" person. Took me 6 trys but finally found an open CSR. Just told her the date, the price that I found and had her email me the intiniary. After I looked it over I emailed her back, she called me back and I was able to book. Total of half hour maybe. Price was better then anywhere else I found. Wherever you book, make sure that your dates, times and places match from what you originally bought. Mistakes can happen and can be costly. I booked through justfares.com, found it to be Delta flights, made sure she had my DeltaSkyMiles card and after I got it confirmed I went on Delta site and confirmed that my flight was there and ok. If you have time and don't mind checking thats the way to go, dot your i's and cross your t's.

EURAIL PASS
Jamie....Eurail Pass. The only reason you would order your pass early is to be sure you have time to receive it before you leave. There is no advantage to buying it early. I always order mine by phone so I can talk to a real person and ask questions about the mail date so I will be sure I can receive it in time.

Jamie-packs and travel
Jamie, Since your are in Seattle, go up to Rick's travel center in Edmonds and try out the packs and also to REI. We have used his packs for month long trips and they work well. I changed over to a roller suitcase and like it even better, but it is heavier to lift. My daughter is now using an internal frame pack which is easier on her back, but not as conveniant to get into as a Rick pack. The travel center has tons of info and resources for your trip that you can read there in front of a fireplace for free. Also check out the free Sat. classes on specific countries. Have a wonderful time!

Air fare, easter in Italy, Sweden
Airfare under $1000 to Europe in the summer is a decent fare. Our family was in Italy over easter in 2002. Nothing was closed in Venice. It was not particularly packed either. There was a terrorist alert for Americans in Venice at that time. To Nancy from Minneapolis, you will not arrive in Stockholm, however there should be some public transportation to take you into town. If you go to Stockholm on a weekend you might be able to get a deal from the TI, special weekend rates. MOst hotels in Sweden include a very filling breakfast, so keep that in mind when comparing costs. I have traveled alot in Sweden, summer is definitely the time to go there,it's dark in the winter and cold, very cold. In addition, the sights are not always open, and if they are, only for a short time. I'd be happy to answer any questions that you might have regarding Sweden. I will be going there again this summer (04).

Questions
Last Friday I finally made my flight reservations for this spring. I leave March 29th to London and fly out of Florence on May 11th, 25 years old and flying solo. I am a little overwhelmed with the amount of time I will be gone (missing my fiancé, family etc), but I am really excited. I was wondering if anyone out there had any suggestions on how to handle the purchase of backpacks. I looked at the one Rick makes and thought it would be a perfect one for me. I also saw one that Eddie Bauer makes a pack that is comparable in size but has a daypack that is attached to the outside. I guess that this one seems to make more sense to me so I can remove the day pack with what I need for flying and train travel. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience here? Also how far out do I need to buy my eurail pass? Does it matter or can I wait until a few weeks before I leave? Thanks!

Eurostar Rome to Florence
What Simon says is totally correct, except that you do not need to validate your train ticket if you go on Eurostar. But if you end up buying Intercity trains (takes an extra hour and costs about 8 Euros less), then you need to validate your ticket before getting on.

Response to — Eurostar Rome to Florence
A one way ticket from Rome to Florence for two passengers cost exactly 58.88 euros. When you arrive in Rome, buy your ticket for the date and time you want to travel at the ticket machine. It's very easy to use. Don't bother buying the return ticket until you arrive in Florence. Make sure to check the length of time for the trip. It usually takes less than 2 hours to travel from Rome to Florence. Don't bother with 1st class seats. 2nd class is very comfortable, just make sure that your seat is nonsmoking. Remember to get your tickets validated at the yellow machines before you get on the train. Have a great trip. It's beautiful there.

Sandra: Rome to Florence
Sandra: I'm not aware of "round trip tickets" being an option. You may just need to get point to point for each way. According to the Italian state rail website (www.trenitalia.com), one-way Rome to Florence, on Eurostar is E42.34 1st class or E29.44 2nd class. The price is somewhat lower if you use the slower train (transit time 2:11 instead of the 1:36 on Eurostar.) There is no need to book from home. If you do so, you will lose some flexibility in travel dates, and it will probably cost you more. I would recommend going to the train station, or a travel agency the day before you want to travel, to buy the tickets and make seat reservations. You can make your return arrangements when you arrive in Florence. I would recommend that, when you know what dates you think you want to travel, you go to www.trenitalia.com and feed in the information for those days (Roma to Firenze on the day you plan to travel and then Firenze to Roma on your projected return date). Be sure to enter departure time as the earliest you might want to depart (or it will default to the current time of day.) Then print out the list it generates, and take it with you. That way, you will have a better idea of what your options are when you go to make your reservations. You may also want to take a look at http://www.seekitaly.com/news/from_roma.html#strikes just before departing for Italy. It lists scheduled strikes, and might help you decide which days you DON'T want to travel.

Natalie: Roma to Civita
Natalie: If I remember correctly, the bus ride from Orvieto to Civita is about an hour. Unless your itinerary is set, I would recommend spending a night or two in Orvieto (upper city). It's very charming — particularly in the evenings, after the busloads of tourists are gone.
Angela

Ann: Train travel from Venice to Rome
Ann: The trip from Venice to Rome should be somewhere between 4.5 and 5.5 hours, depending on the type of train. The price will also vary, depending on type of train, and whether you want to travel 1st or 2nd class. For that trip, I would recommend reserved seats (you can make the reservations at the Venice station the day before, or even several hours before.) For particulars on routes and fares go to www.trenitalia.com . Be sure to enter the departure and destination cities by their Italian names (Venezia and Roma) and date in dd/mm/yyyy form. If information for the date you are planning on traveling is not yet available (sometimes they will show routes, but because tickets are not yet being sold, fare information is unavailable) pick an earlier date, that is the same day of the week as the day you plan on traveling and try that. It should at least give you an idea of your options.

Venice Airport Transportation
To mab in Winnetka- Best bet is the bus (ACTV #5), a 20 minute ride direct to Piazzale Roma. Buy tickets in the airport lobby, and the bus is right outside. When we were there (Spring 2002) the ticket booth took cash only. Perhaps that's changed by now, but there is an exchange booth right in the lobby if not. It is not the most scenic transfer, but it IS very quick, very easy, and very affordable.

Refrigerating Medicine
I'm a diabetic and must keep my insulin cool. The hotel we stay at does not have individual mini-fridges in the rooms. So, I asked the hotel manager if I could keep my insulin in their refrigerator. He was fine with that. Except I didn't actually keep my insulin in their fridge. I brought two of those insulated MedPort things. I kept one in their freezer while my insulin was in the other. It stays frozen for several hours. Then I switched the insulin to the bag that was left in overnight and threw the other (empty) one in the freezer. I don't know if this will help or not.

Making Flight Connections
We will be traveling in France this summer — arriving in Paris and ending up in Nice. However, in order to cash in on our frequent flyer miles, we had to get a return flight from Paris rather than Nice. I understand that there are cheap and frequent flights on small airlines from Nice to Paris. My question is: If our main return flight leaves Paris at noon, how soon do we need to leave Nice in order to have plenty of time to make connections in Paris? Dressing in Paris
Sally, It is true that women in Paris tend to dress up more than women in the U.S. Everyone wears a lot of black. Don't forget the ubiquitous leather jacket. Everyone seems to have one of those. If you don't have a scarf, don't worry: You can pretty much buy one anywhere. On Rue du Rivoli, there are lots of shops that have scarves for sale...very pretty ones, too. No sweats, wind pants, shorts, capris...unless you want to look like a tourist. If you really want to fit in, opt for a black purse that you can fit your camera, guidebook, etc, in rather than a backpack. Have fun!

Suzy — Italy with a 9 year old
Suzy: I think that you'll want to avoid any 1 night stays in a city, if that's possible. I would recommend this even if your travel companion was another adult, but especially so with a child. If you stay only 1 night and then move on, you do not have time to really see anything of the city you are in, you waste a lot of time in transit, and I think you'd find it exhausting (as would your son, and tired kids don't make good travelers.)

Even if you were not traveling with a child, I would recommend doing lots of research from home (you'll want to do that anyway) so that you would have a general idea of where you might want to visit, and deciding on specifics as you go. This is a great way to travel, but, with a 9 year old, a little more structure might make things much easier. I think if it were me, I would pick 3 cities (4 at the absolute most). Make reservations in those cities, and do your homework on possible day trips from each. If you have a list of several possible day trips from each city, and choose which ones to take as you go, your trip will feel less structured and confining, without the hassle of dragging your bags around, and trying to find a hotel every few days, with a 9 year old in tow.

If you go to Rome, I highly recommend Ostia Antica (see www.ricksteves.com/news/0202/ostia.htm for Rick's self-guided walking tour, and instructions for getting there from Rome.) It's very kid friendly. Unlike museums, where you aren't allowed to touch anything, in Ostia, it seems it's OK to touch, walk through and even climb on just about anything that isn't presently being excavated. It's a great place to get an up-close look at ancient Rome.

An earlier poster made some luggage suggestions. On my most recent trip to Italy, one of my travel companions was the then 9 year old daughter of friends. She had a carry-on size bag with in-line skate wheels (which is what I would recommend for anyone making this trip.) We traveled by train, and used taxis to get from train station to hotels. She handled her own bag, and only needed help when lifting it onto and off of trains. Have a great trip!

For Suzy — traveling with 9 yr old son
I traveled last summer with my 11 year old son. I had traveled fairly extensively by train in Europe, but it was his first trip. We made all of our reservations in advance and that worked great for us. It was such a relief not to be hiking around with backpacks looking for somewhere to stay. Plus, I love the planning! If your son will be carrying his own backpack, learn from us and have him practice carrying it around the block. My son was 5'1" and 85 lbs and was throroughly exhausted by his pack on travel days. We thought it was OK walking around the house, but that's a far cry from hiking from the metro station to the hotel, etc... So, I vote for full reservations. Just pick places you know you want to go and have fun doing things instead of looking for hotels.

Thanks, but Germanwing.com does not fly out of Dusseldorf. It's surprising how two big cities are not really connected by a flight. And not sure how much the bahn tickets would be since their prices won't come out for another couple of month.

Reservations
My 9yr old son and I will be traveling to Italy in March 2004 for about 12 days. It will be a first for us both. We would like to see as much as possible without spending exorbitant amounts. I have a tentative itinerary but I really don't want to be tied down to specific dates and places. With this being our first time, not fluent in Italian, and me being a young woman with a child, should we make reservations ahead of time in each city we plan to travel, and stick to the planned itinerary this first trip? Or is it relatively safe for us to make reservations for one night in each city thereby giving us a little more room to explore other options once we get there? Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Germany/Swiss Alps in April by car?
My husband & I are planning our first trip to Europe in April or May 2004. We plan about 3 weeks, based from Frankfurt. We thought about a rail pass (to get to & from Berlin), but also of renting a car to travel south (Romantic Road, Dachau, Bavaria, Swiss Alps). Has anyone done this trip by car/rail? We wonder if the high Swiss Alps are easily accessible and if it will still be snowy? Any advice would be most appreciated!

cheap flights between duesseldorf and Stuttgart
I'm flying in June with my son to Dusseldorf to visit with my sister for a couple of days. But then want to go further down south for a visit with my elderly parents in Tuttlingen. I was going to fly into Stuttgart and have them possibly pick us up but can't seem to get a reasonable price on it. We didn't wanted to take the bahn since that would've run around 130 per person and would've took us around 6 hours to get there versus 1 hour by plane. I did find a 29 euro per person flight on Air Berlin but for some reason they have trouble with my AMEX.....any suggestion anyone?

Hotel Oceania, Rome
This is for Alan Grupp, I sent you an email but it bounced back. My husband, our niece, a friend and I stayed at Hotel Oceania in September 2002. We liked it very much. It is on the fourth floor of the building and is divided into two "wings." One wing is older. While we were there, a Rick Steves tour group was staying on that side. We had rooms on the newer side. The rooms were very nice with beautiful new bathrooms. It was well worth the reasonable price.

EURO/ITALY
Harriet.....The educated guess is based on the past. The dollar is losing value at a steady rate. In May it will be lower than today. Go to "oanda.com" and check the current exchange rate. Get an ATM card and if you use it to get euros in Italy..not here.. you will get the international bank rate which is the lowest. Get euros only as you need them every few days. Buying currency here is the most expensive way you can do it.

JILL in Cinci — it sounds like you and your husband have 9 or 10 days for your trip. London is (easily) worth 10 days and that doesn't even include the great day trips out of town. Paris is also worth 10 days (at least!!!). If the Eurostar enchants you, okay, London and Paris then. Now about N. Italy: Where inN. Italy? Worth 10 days? Worth a lifetime! (But that's just me...) No matter what you do you'll almost certainly have a wonderful time. Just assume that you will be back, which frees you from the feeling that you have to do everything now. As the man said, "Slow down, you move too fast..." Enjoy.

I am an American living in France. Upon reading about the 'drinking water' issues, I wanted to inform French tourists about ordering water in Restaurants. Cornwall
My wife and I stayed in Plymouth last summer. We enjoyed the place very much. our accommodation was at Brittany Guest House (www.brittanyguesthouse.co.uk). A happy looking home with clean rooms, very good breakfast and friendly owners. They are only 2 minutes walk from the coast — a very beautiful view. We enjoyed a day trip to Penzance and visited St. Michael's Mount, which is in Marazion, nearby to Penzance. St. Ives is a good choice too. We also took a day trip into the Dartmoor National Park and went to Lydford Gorge there. Absolutely beautiful. There is a bus leaving from Plymouth and leaves you right at the entrance to this beautiful gorge. Didn't spend long time there, only 2 days, but it is worth staying longer.

Luggage in Italy
Dina: Yes, this is realistic, as long as the wheels on your bags are the in-line skate wheels, and the bag has a handle or carry strap other than the drag handle. The wimpy wheels on older bags would not stand up to cobblestone streets, but the in-line skate wheels are designed to handle the weight of an adult (let's hope your bag is nowhere close to that), and are much more durable. My husband and I have used carry-on size bags with in-line skate wheels on our last 2 trips to Italy (I've also done several trips with non-wheeled bags - but never again!) The bags have logged about 6 weeks of travel, being dragged over many a cobblestone street, and the wheels are still in good working order. No matter where you are going in Italy, you will want your bags to have handles or carry straps other than just their drag handles. There will always be stairs.

Winter Travel in Europe
I was in Amsterdam, Berlin & Brussels last winter and it was very cold. Yes you are inside visiting museums and such but you are outside a lot as well. Re: Hotel Italia Rome
We stayed at Hotel Italia about 3 years ago. On the plus side the staff was great, the breakfast very good by Italian standards, they responded to my e-mails very promptly and gave us 10% discount for mentioning Rick Steves, the rooms were clean and quiet. The location was good for us as we came into the Termini and it was within 10 minute walk but not too near. There are bus stops just up the street for easy access. The rooms were rather small but I think we would probably stay there again.

Luggage in Italy
I have a question regarding luggage. Hubby and are doing an 11 day train odyssey through Italy. Milan, Cinque Terre, Venice; our itinerary is not completely set. Question: we want to only bring a small, wheeled, carry-on bag, and a small backpack (daypack).(One small luggage per person plus hip packs, probably) Is this realistic? RE: WINTER IN EUROPE
It depends on what your plans are. If you're just going to visit cities, carrying around extra bulky clothing will become burdensome. You'll probably be indoors most of the time. If you're going skiing, that's a different story. The only extra things I would pack are maybe a sweater and a coat. If you find you need more, you can always buy it there.

Re: Florence to Pisa
Eleanor — Yes, you can do it in 1 afternoon. The train takes about 1 hour, and when you get off in Pisa, it's a 30min walk or a 10min bus ride to the Leaning Tower. Since you're going in the afternoon, it might be wise if you buy ticket ahead of time online at: http://www.opapisa.it/ It's a guided 30min tour up the tower. There should be enough time left for you to tour the Cathedral and the Baptistry.

Places for a Large Family
Sallie: My suggestion is to research a hostel wherever you plan to stay. My wife and I have stayed in them in 7 countries and I can recommend them. You can find lots of them listed if you will do a GOOGLE search for hostels-(and list your city or country). Many hostels have dorm rooms plus other rooms for 2, 4, 6 or more guests. You can all stay in one room or divide your family into as many rooms as you like. Going in March or April will avoid the busy season, so hostel rates are lowee. You can reserve your rooms by email and ask for a confirmation. Some have bathrooms in the rooms and others have them down the hall. Most include breakfast in the room rate. Once you price hotel rooms, you may also want to check B&Bs, country inns, pensions and gites (French farmhouses). If you rent a car you will want to stay in a suburb of Rome, Venice and Milan to avoid the high room rates. Even if you don't have a car, the public transportation is useful in those large cities.

Avignon is very touristy, but does have a lot to see — Arles is touristy too, but not as much and seems more quaint (and very Roman, of course!) Grand Hotel Leveque
Pat, take my advice and stay away from the rue Cler area altogether. We stayed at the GHL in October. We previously had stayed at the Grand Hotel Jean D'Arc in the Marais but decided to make a change. Oh well. The Marais remains my favorite area in Paris and is much less touristy than the rue Cler area and less pricey than the 6th altogether. The GHJD is over by the Place des Vosges and is truly great value for the money. The people there were much more friendly than the folks at the GHL. And when I had questions that I had emailed, they responded within two days with clarification. But I do admit that I love the Marais and was dissappointed in the rue Cler area. The truth is, though, that no matter where you stay, you will have a great time. If not this time, then try out the Marais and the GHJD the next. Bon Voyage!

U S DOLLAR CONVERSION
Gayle....I haven't visited a country in the last 10 years where I could not get currency from an ATM machine...including Russia and Estonia. There must be lots of them in Mexico. As you may know, you always get the International exchange rate which is the best. And machines are available in banks, outside banks, dept stores, airports, and rail stations. Buying currency here in the US is the most expensive method. And withdrawing from your acccount at an ATM is always more convenient. You don't have to carry excess money because you can withdraw only when you need it.

Itinerary questions/suggestions.
My husband and I are planning a trip to Europe in April and came up with an itinerary to fly into London and spend two days, take the train to Paris to spend for another two days and then take an overnight train to Northern Italy to spend four days and fly home from. For all of you experienced European travelers, is this itineraty a pipe dream? Are there any suggestions you could provide to enhance our travels using the same locations?

To Terri on Champ de Mars: Champ de Mars is indeed still "alive and well". Had a friend stay there recently. I stayed about a year ago and have a reservation for late April. Web address, www.hotel-du-champ-de-mars.com. It's probably the best buy in Paris for location and rates.

Hotel du Champs de Mars...no more
For anyone out there looking for the Hotel du Champs de Mars in Paris: We stayed there three years ago, and loved it. Very cute, very Frech, and very comfortable. But it seems it's not called the Champs de Mars anymore (and there is another hotel that now has that name). It is now the Atel du Cadran, and it looks like they have expanded and updated it. Don't know if it would hold the same charm, but if anyone stays there, would you post your experience, please? You can view it at http://atel-hotels.com/gb/hotel_reservation/france/paris/Fiche_hotel-478.php.

Need Recommendation on Sorrento Hotel
My fiance and I are planning our Honeymoon to Italy for September 2004, and we need advice on where to stay in Sorrento. We usually look for bargain accommodations (and have found some great hotels in the past thanks to Rick!) but for our Honeymoon we really want something extra special — while staying under $200 Euros a night! Do you have any recommendations? Something overlooking the water is preferred! Do you have an opinion on Hotel La Tonnarella — we've heard mixed reviews. Thanks!

Grand Hotel Leveque
My wife, 16 year old daughter and I will be spending some time in Paris this summer. In reading various comments I am leaning towards staying at the Grand Hotel Leveque in the rue Cler district. Has anyone stayed in their triple room which they describe as having 2 single beds plus a sofa bed. Their description contains the words "for 1 child only". I have tried to get clarification directly from the hotel as to the size of person their 'sofa bed' would accomodate but have been unsuccessful. My daugter is 5 feet 10 inches but rather slender. Has anyone stayed in one of their triple rooms and can you tell me whether you believe the sofa bed would be comfortable enough for my daughter.

Anyone have experience with the Sixti? I've checked the website at www.sixti.com and for 5 euro's per day, it seems like a great way to do some day trips. I will certainly not drive in Paris (parking and traffic), but would driving in the rest of the country be as wild?

Rail Questions
Make your itinerary and estimate the number of days you will need a rail pass. Then go to: railpass.com/ticket and determine the poin-to-point fares between the cities you will travel to. Add them up and compare with the cost of the railpass. You might also try: raileurope.com/us/rail/fares_schedules/index.

When I have used this method in the past, I always buy point-to-point because I don't have to commit until the day I plan to travel. Many rail stations have ticket vending machines which help prevent standing in line for tickets. If you buy from a ticket agent ask him to print an itinerary for you showing the departure time for each journey, the arrival time, the station where any change of trains will occur. Do that each time you buy a ticket. But do not rely on the information because railroads change their schedules frequently.

It is wise to ask about changing trains at the time you change. Ask for platform numbers and when you arrive at the platform ask any traveler there about your train just to be sure. We have often found platform numbers change only minutes before departure. I have found it wise never to rely on any information regarding public trasportation. Many times I have gotten on a subway or bus only to find out someone had misadvised me! Take nothing for granted — especially in Europe.

Christmas 2004...Jean
Jean.... Yes! Definitely Zermatt in December...pray for snow. My wife and I were there twice and the second time we had 12 inches of snow. It was impressive because there are no autos allowed on the streets. That makes it quaint for walking around and riding the train to the lookout to view the top of the Matterhorn much more impressive.

Ellen J — England Must Sees
I definitely recommend heading west from London to Bath as Rick suggests. Lovely city and the Roman Bath Museum is incredible! Glastonbury and Wells are mystical and charming delights. And walk within the incredible stone circle of Avebury — it's worth the trip. Check out Dartmoor for fabulous hikes and stunning views with wonderful village hospitality. I visited Chagford in the eastern sector of the region. Renting a car will allow you to do this all or you can use train/bus/hired driver as we did. Enjoy!

Re: 15 days
If you have never been to Paris before you will need at least a week to really see the city. I can't imagine someone stating 3 days is enough. You can spend 3 days just in museums. I would suggest 1) 15 days in Paris, 2) a week in Paris and a week in London, or 3) a week in Paris and a week in Normandy/chateaus/etc. Enjoy.

15 Days in Paris
You and your daughter will have plenty to do in Paris. But, if I were you I would take her to London also. There are tons of things she would like in London, this way she could experience different counties. You can take the eurostar over to London. Purchase an open jaw plane ticket, this allowing you to arrive in Paris and depart from London. I would especially consider going over to London if you don't think your be returing to Europe anytime soon. London is an fantastic city and your daughter could see and learn a lot.

To Morgen re: Packing
To Morgen: Yes, absolutely pack light - especially if you are going to be, as you say "sort of all over the place"! The heavier your bag is, the more unhappy it will make you. If you are traveling to several different places, the only people who will see you wearing the same things over and over will be those traveling with you. They will either be doing the same thing, or wishing they had. Instead of taking "3 outfits", I would recommend taking 4 or 5 tops and 3 bottoms that will mix and match. You've obviously read what Rick has to say about packing light. Read it again, and TAKE IT SERIOUSLY!

15 Days in Paris
I agree with Linda that some day trips would be in order and most of the ones she mentioned are not expensive trips. I would add that, if you go to Chartres, in addition to the magnificent cathedral, you visit Maison Picassiette in Chartres. It is one of the most incredible and beautiful displays of folk art I have ever seen — one man decorated his entire house and garden with lovely mosaics. You can see photos at http://www.thejoyofshards.co.uk/picassiette/index.shtml Also, if you decide to visit another area like the Loire Valley or Alsace (wonderful), you could spend 2 or 3 nights there and it might be cheaper than Paris. At any rate, you will love Paris — have a great trip. If I can be of any further help, please let me know. (I just noticed, this is starting to sound like a Georgia chat room.)

Istanbul safety?
My husband and I are seriously considering travel to Istanbul in April, but are concerned about the recent bombings on British sites there. Of course the State Dept. says don't go and the Turkish Consulate says it's safe. 15 Days in Paris
You and your daughter could certainly have a great time in Paris for 15 days. There is plenty to do, especially if you like to shop. (Somehow I never budget time for that!) Don't feel like you have to go somewhere else. That being said, you don't say if you've been to Europe before and what you've seen etc... If this is one big trip for you, you might think of adding something else that interests you. You do have time, easily, two visit one, or even a couple more ciites.

I took my 11 year old son for 18 nights this summer and we spent 6 nights in London, 4 in Paris, 3 in Lauterbrunnen Switzerland, 3 in Salzburg and 2 in Munich. But, I have spent about 8 months living and studying in Paris and I wanted to give him a flavor of more than one place. If you do stay all in Paris, make some day trips to some outlying sights that can be handled as day trips. I liked Chartres Cathedral, the Chateau at Chantilly (covered by the museum pass), Fontainbleu, Malmaison (Napoleon and Josephine's home), Monet's home in Giverny, etc... With more bucks, but not a fortune, you could do a day trip or overnight to the Loire Valley.

If you do want to travel farther afield, you can do it inexpensively with some research. By watching sales on the SNCF (French Rail website), I was able to snap up two TGV tickets to Geneva for 25 euro each, then I bought an adult Swiss rail pass and my son was then free with the included family card. Your daughter, at under 16, would be free too. That was a great deal for us and we traveled in Switzerland for 4 days. Gorgeous. Have a great trip.

HELP ~ What to plan.....
My 15 yr old daughter and I are thrilled to be planning a vacation to Paris this summer (early July through Bastille Day). Our original plans were to spend the entire time exploring every corner of this beautiful city. However, we've started to encounter people who say we should not spend the entire 15 days in Paris — that after 3 days or so, we should either go to London and into Scotland or we should go to the south of France and possibly into Italy, etc. I'm not keen on driving in Europe, and I didn't budget additional $ for several train tickets. I would love to hear from some seasoned travelers as to what you might lean toward if you were planning this trip.

Jennifer — Denmark to Belgium
I don't know what cities you are connecting between, exactly, but within Germany, you can travel all the way between Flensburg in the north and Aachen, near the Belgian border, for 28 Euros if you travel on a Saturday or a Sunday. Go to the first German station you can get to and ask for a "Schoenes Wochenende" ticket (daypass for unlimited travel on the regional trains, good only on weekends.) The trip requires 10+ hours and 4-5 connections. From there, regular travel within Belgium is usually pretty cheap. You can search for schedules at www.bahn.de. Be sure to stipulate travel on local trains (Nahverkehr) for the 28 Euro price.
