Heroic B&B Friendliness: 2008
European bed and breakfast hosts and hostesses are notorious for confounding travelers with inexplicable kindness. Share tales of B&B hosts who went above and beyond the call of touristic duty to give you a great trip.
Note: This board is for tips about great European B&Bs (not hotels). If there are multiple comments on the same place, we will delete repetitious posts. Comments about more traditional hotels should be posted in the appropriate Rick Steves guidebook forum. For specific lodging recommendations, please refer to Rick's guidebooks, and read his tips on planning your trip.
If you have a complaint about a B&B in one of Rick's books that you could not resolve with the management, we would like to hear about it; however, please do not express your misgivings here. Amalfi Coast - Atrani
In December of 2007 we spent 3 weeks travelling in Italy and stayed in apartments in most places.
We found the best accommodations in Atrani, a 10 minute walk from the town of Amalfi. The people who rent the apartment have 3 apartments that overlook the Sea and were exceptionally clean. The apartment even had a washer and dryer, internet connection and TV.
The owners are really concerned about their guests having a great experience. On our second to last morning, the owners notified us that the following day (our departure day) there was going to be a transportation strike and we may not be able to get to Rome as planned. They assisted us in figuring out our best options. When we decided to depart at the last moment, in pouring rain, they even drove to Almafi to buy us bus tickets and met us at the bus stop. This is the kindest thing that have ever happened to us while travelling.
Here is the website and I encourage you to consider staying here if you are going to be in the area. There is an option in the upper right hand corner to change the language to English.

Lake Como B&B
This fall my husband and I took an 8 week trip to Italy. One of our stays was at a beautiful B & B on Lake Como. The owner is artist, Paul Wright and his wife Nicole. The views from the rooms are fantastic of the lake. You can walk down a path to the hydrofoil boats to get to other towns around Lake Como. Paul is a perfect host, and is there to assist you in whatever you may need. I am sure he can get you an invite from neighbor, George Clooney!!!! you can contact him at www.wrightart.com... we have great memories of all of Italy, but especially Lake Como...

Casa Portagioia -
My trip to Italy and Tuscany ended at Casa Portagioia (www.casaportagioia.com) - where I enjoyed a restful and peaceful experience. Magnificent scenery, good company, excelent food. Very helpful hosts - particularly useful when travelling alone and wanting to get the best from a vacation.
Excellent accommodation - perhaps the best during the trip and cetainly the best value.
I look forward to returning again.

Rome B&B-Gulliver's Lodge
We stayed at the Gulliver's Lodge a B&B in Rome. It was great. Just down the street from the train station maybe 4-6 blocks. Basically half way between the train station and the Coloseum. Simon runs the B&B and he was awesome. When we got there we had set up what we wanted to see. But he sat down with us and a local map with about 4 different highlighters and pens and showed us everything we wanted to see and made getting around a snap. He even called and made reservations for us at some of the museums. The B&B is on the main road but the rooms are in the back so they are fairly quiet. I have recommended this place to all my friends, and anytime I go back to Rome I will definately stay there.

Rome (B&B Bologna) and Prague (Guest House Lida)
During our 17 day European vacation, my fiance and I had two notably wonderful B&B experiences. The first was in Rome, where we stayed at B&B Bologna at Piazza Bologna in Rome. Aldo and Daniela were wonderful, the room was great, and the advice was valuable. The only unfortunate event here was that one of the places he sent us overcharged us for dinner (it was a place where they just bring out courses, so we never saw a menu or prices). When we asked him about the price (100 euros for the two of us), he said that it seemed high, called the place, and got us a refund (40 euros). We will truly never forget his kindness, such that we are planning on sending him a picture of our wedding next year. Even though the place was a little hard to find, and not exactly centrally located, it was next to a subway stop, and definitely worth checking out. The next place I would recommend was the Guest House Lida in Prague, which has been oft recommended on this site. Jiri and Jana (?) were very accommodating, the rooms were very nice, and their advice was sound. The only drawback is that they are a little south of the central attractions, but there were some good restaurants in the area, so that was a plus. One other recommendation is that I wouldn't see the black light theatre in Prague. We saw "Aspects of Alice" and it was supposed to be one of the better venues, but it looked like a crappy high school auditorium, and we generally thought the show was pretty cheesy. It was so bad, it was almost funny.

Great new B&B in Florence
We arrived in Florence a day early and our hotel was full. The owner referred us to Le Contesee, a wonderful little B&B off the beaten path, but a 10-minute walk to the Academia. Just a few rooms, very nice, clean; warm, friendly and helpful in getting museum reservations. Great breakfast. It's run by Candida and Gabriella. Note: the sign was smaller than business card, posted at the door bell!

Ardwan House - Galway, Ireland
My 75 yeard old mother and I rented a car for our trip around Ireland. We were staying at the Ardawn House (very clean!) when we picked up the car. As we tried to leave Galway, we realized we were not going to be able to navigate the roads, figure out where we were and manage not to crash! We couldn't even find the car rental place to return it! We made it back to the Ardawn and Mike and his daughter, Danielles actually drove us and the rental back to return it and got us to the bus station to resume our vacation. They had to drop what they were doing to do all this for us and they didn't blink an eye about it. They saved our trip!!!

Al Campaneil BB in Venice
We stayed at this very conveniently located BB (1 min fr San Tomo stop). We had a separate bathroom, but the room was very well priced (72 euro, we went end of Sept) and the breakfast was amazing - you'd probably pay 15euro each for it in a hotel. Cereal, juice, rolls with ham and cheese, lemon filled croissants, toast and jam and tea and coffee. And they let us keep our bags in a locked closet and gave us keys to get back in to retreive them (had a late flight out). We only stayed one night, but will def re-book when we return in a few years. And...a chocolate shop right across the street!!! Sweet.

Corte Campana in Venice
We spent a wonderful 4 days in Venice. Stayed at the Corte Campana. Can't say enough good things about Riccardo and his wonderful B&B - beginning with the foolproof directions given on his web site - with picture helpers!
Our room was large and clean. Riccardo provided a simple breakfast each morning with lots of good conversation.
We got recommendations for restaurants, touring options and even buying good wine for 2 Euro a bottle!
We loved Venice, and Riccardo helped to make our time there especially wonderful!!

Katja's B&B was wonderful. They couldn´t have done anything more to make me feel welcomed. The breakfast was impressive. Even though the bathroom was shared between two rooms, it was always immaculately clean whenever I used it. This place is better than any of the hotels I have stayed at. I would recommend it to everyone for a home away from home.Gianluca is an excellent host. He is a talented chef and wine taster, and he is eager to help out his guests. Memorable B+B - Chianti
We just returned from heaven on earth, otherwise known as the Borgo Argenina B+B in Gaiole in Chianti. Host Elena Nappa makes each moment memorable, from her warm greeting to helpful touring hints to the delicious morning coffee cake. Set amidst rolling vineyards and totally quiet, Borgo is an easy drive to Sienna as well as most other towns. Would we return? In a minute...no, make that a second. The Nicolas Inn, Via Cavour 295, is our favorite place to stay in Rome. We just returned from a 4-week stay in Italy, and our 12 days at this B&B were simply The Best! Romantica Pucci (Bagnoregio/Civita)
It's interesting that the other posting on Romantica Pucci used the word 'treasure' to define this B&B, as that is the exact word my husband & I used when we thanked Rick et al for finding Pucci & her husband, Lamberto! Our room (Dahlia) was spacious, clean and comfortable, perfect for relaxing after enjoying the surrounding area. The included breakfast was far superior to any we received elsewhere during our travels: a variety of homemade sweet and specialty breads, tortes, local cheeses, juices, ham, homemade jams, and the best scrambled eggs we had while in Italy. Not only was Pucci a gracious hostess, engaging all of her guests in conversation as she moved among the breakfast tables, she offered valuable suggestions for local daytrips and resolved a couple of transportation challenges we faced. Romantica Pucci is a “home away from home,” and my husband and I can wholeheartedly recommend it to other travelers.

Great B&B in Rome Italia
A rare find and much better than some 4 star hotels I have stayed in. You are made to feel so welcome by Max and Lavinia and they will give you a whole host of information about getting the best out of Rome and all thier tips work. There are a couple of really great local restaurants which are half the price of the centre with a great local atmosphere and great food. The metro and local buses are only 5 minutes walk away as is the Vatican. Rooms are spotlessly clean and large. Breakfast is good. Great B and B in Tuscany
We stayed at Casa Portagioia for a week in early October 2008, and would recommend it highly. The rooms were large, beautifully furnished, with wonderful linens, (and a welcome carafe of vin santo!!). The grounds and landscaping are fabulous; with vistas of olive trees; and a mountainous landscape. The hosts catered to our every need; from accommodating food requests, to navigational help, to suggesting the day's itineraries and making dinner reservations. We found it to be excellent value compared to any other places we stayed in Italy. We can hardly wait for our next visit and would highly recommend it.

A nice b&b in Rome
This is a a nice place to get away from the noise and tourists. It is a small bed and breakfast located on Gianicolo Hill above Trastevere. Both rooms have private bathrooms however the bathrooms are located directly across the hall from each of the rooms. This place is located in a beautiful neighborhood close to the bus. We took a taxi from the train station for 15 euros. We payed 110 euros a night for a triple room. The walk from the bed and breakfast to the Vatican was great, with beautiful views of the city. I would stay here again.

Several Great B&B's throughout England and Scotland
Hi Everyone, I just wanted to share the names of the B&B's that we stayed at during our trip. To start, not a B&B, but a great inexpensive hotel in London is the Cherry Court. Our room was very small, but clean and conveniently located near Victoria Station. Mrs. Patel is a super nice person and will help you with anything if she can.
Cotswolds: In this area we stayed in a little village called Blockley at a B&B named the Malins. The was such a cute place, I loved the outside of the house and our bedroom was very nice. This was a nice location to see the Cotswold area. Blockley is just a short drive from Chipping Campden. There is a great pub in Blockley just a short walk from the Malins called the Western Arms. The food here was great and the atmosphere was nice. The breakfast and fresh pressed coffee in the morning at the Malins was a great way to start the day. Jane and her husband Allen, were very friendly and Allen gave us some great advice for our travels into Scotland.
York, England: Here we stayed at a place called the Crescent House. This was also a nice place. The only downside was that our room was up several flights of stairs, which really wasn't much of a downside. It is fairly well located just a short walk from the city center where tours leave from and close to York Minster. The breakfasts were not the best we had, but pretty good and the lady running the kitchen, Ruth, is super sweet and friendly.
Lake District, England: In the Lake District we stayed in a little town called Embleton, near Cockermouth at a B&B called the Orchard House. This place was wonderful. The view from the front of the house and breakfast area is so peaceful and nice. Watching the fog lift off the mountains in the morning was a great way to start our day. The hosts David and Barbara were very nice and the breakfast was top notch. Our room was very nice with a great view of the back gardens. We loved this place and only wish we had been there longer than 1 night. Plus, the Lake District is absolutely gorgeous!
Trossachs region, Scotland: If you are visiting the Trossachs region in Scotland or even the Stirling/Glasgow area and want to stay at a wonderful B&B it may be worth your time to drive to Lochearnhead (near Callendar) and stay at the Tigh-Na-Crich. This was the best B&B that we stayed in on our trip. Our hosts Irene and John were so friendly and accomodating and the room was just wonderful. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was great. The bathtub was long and big and the shower had great pressure with a large shower head and there were heated towels. My husband and I were just so excited to see this bathroom because we had been sqeezing into such small bathrooms and showers up until then (and after this) that we really appreciated how nice it was. The breakfast in the morning was also wonderful, one of the best of our trip. We hated to leave Tigh Na Crich and will definitely return here if we visit Scotland again. The Trossachs region in Scotland is also very nice.
Fort William, Scotland: We were only in the Fort William area for one night on our way to the Isle of Skye, but it was a good day and night and we stayed at one of our favorite places called Cuil-Na-Sithe (Corner of Heaven in Gaelic). Our hostess here, Ali, is one of the nicest woman in all of Scotland. We really enjoyed spending some time talking with her and learning a bit about this area of Scotland. Ali is also an EMT and you can feel that she is a truly caring soul and loves to help people. Our room here was great, we loved the way it was decorated and the bed was super comfy. Ben Nevis is very close and we loved this area of Scotland. We had dinner at the Glen Nevis restaurant which was very good.
Isle of Skye, Scotland: We took the ferry from Mallaig "over the sea" to Skye so that we could do the Road to the Isles drive. This was a nice drive and very cool to see the Glenfinnan monument and the viaduct from the Harry Potter movies. On Skye, we stayed in a little area called Luib, just a short drive from Broadford at the Luib House. You cannot ask for friendlier hosts, Marilynn and Phil are the best and will always greet you with a smile. The only thing there might be if you are traveling with tall companion (my hubby is 6'4") you may want to let them know. We ended up with a bathroom that had a shower that he could not stand up in because the ceiling was too low. It really wasn't a big deal to him as he is pretty laid back and has a good sense of humor. They felt bad about this, but said that they had plans to remodel eventually. Our room, however was great and the view from our window was very nice. Breakfast was wonderful and Luib is a nice place to stay on Skye. We had dinner one night at a place called Creelers in Broadford. This, we decided, was probably the best meal of our trip. I got their seafood gumbo and it was so good. Very, very spicy (ask for a sample before ordering if you think you might be sensitive to that), but so yummy. Definitely try to eat here if you are on Skye. It doesn't look like much from the outside and you will probably want to have reservations, but the food and service is great.
Inverness, Scotland: We actually stayed just outside of Inverness in a little village called Tore at the Roadside Croft. Our hostess, Cathie, is just the sweetest Scottish lady and cooks up a breakfast that will take you through the entire day. Our room was very cute and comfortable and located close to Inverness and other places of interest. We visited Fort George and Culloden Battlefield while we were here. Both worth it and covered with our English Heritage Pass. Inverness was one of my favorite towns in Scotland. I wish that we had had more time to explore and take a tour of the city.
Edinburgh, Scotland: In Edinburgh we stayed at the Pillars House, in an area known as Leith. We were not real sure about the neighborhood at first, but it was safe and we really loved the Pillars House. If you are looking for somewhere that is very near the center of Edinburgh, this might not be the place for you, but if you don't mind a bit of a walk then you should be alright. Edna is such a great woman that is was worth it. It is about a 1/2 hour walk to the city and mostly a slight uphill incline to consider. The Leith area is also under tram works so this could be a challenge if you are driving, but check with Edna and she will try to give you the best advice on this. Other than some of that, our room was nice and we enjoyed our stay here.
I think it was so great that we were able to stay at B&B's throughout our trip because it is so nice to meet the owners who often have such a great knowledge of the area and make the trip more meaningful. The only other piece of advice I would give if you are traveling throughout the UK for any amount of time and seeing sights is to check into getting the English Heritage Pass. This was well worth our money and saved us a great deal of money.
Please feel free to email me if you have any specific questions. Happy Travels!

Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic - CastleView Apartments
Beyond Our Expectations!
Granted after reading favorable reviews on Rick Steves and TripAdvisor, we were anticipating wonderful lodging, but Castleview Apartments was more than that… it became a blessing. Sometimes unfortunate things happen that cannot be helped and that is what happened to us while staying in the Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic.
On the second day of our stay, I had an accident by falling and breaking my leg on a cobblestone street. Immediately everything changed in our carefully laid-out itinerary for our 3 week tour of Czech Republic, Poland, and Hungary. I was transported by ambulance to the hospital. A resident surgeon explained (in bare basic English) that my leg and ankle were broken in the fashion of a skiing fall and would need extensive surgery to insert a rod and screws to repair the damage. I would not be able to make the long flight home back to the States and would have to stay in hospital for 10 to 15 days. My husband and I were in a state of despair, not only was my leg broken, but all our plans for our holiday were going down the drain.
My husband left me in good hands at the hospital to return to the Castleview Apartments and explained to the staff what had happened. They immediately asked how they could help us. Jiri’s wife is an ANGEL. She immediately came to my aid by giving my husband two bags filled with items for my stay in the hospital. She included necessities like soap, washcloth, towel, toilet paper, facial cleansing clothes, and a container of vitamin juice, assorted fresh fruits, candies, cookies, a bouquet of fresh flowers and several books in English to read. What a delight, she knew exactly what I would need. Jiri worked with us on lodging for as much time needed and arranged for a larger apartment when our daughter flew over to join us. The pleasant young men staffing the front desk helped us with communications, since there was much to do in canceling our reserved trip itinerary, notify family members and our insurance companies. We had a lot on our minds and the compassionate staff of Castleview all came to our rescue.
For seventeen nights we occupied a total of three different apartments, all lovely and meticulously maintained. Every few days not only were the linens and towels replaced, but a fresh bouquet of flowers was placed on the table alongside a bowl of fresh fruit and some delicious candies and/or cookies. My daughter and husband were very comfortable and it was only a convenient twenty minute walk to the hospital. It wouldn’t be fair not to mention as well that the Cesky Krumlov Hospital staff was excellent. In fact, after our return to the States, my orthopedic doctor was so impressed by the precision of the surgeon; he claimed it to be a ‘textbook’ surgical operation.
A situation that could have been so very difficult turned out to be a cultural experience to be remembered and treasured. You couldn’t find nicer more compassionate people nestled in this charming southern Bohemian town, Cesky Krumlov.

B&B in Rome
While planning our once in a life time trip to Italy we checked out the Graffiti wall for recommendations. We came across a previous posting about Il Colle degli Ulivi, a B&B located in Zagarola, a town about 30 mins. by train outside of Rome. I have to say that the graffite wall is a great tool for trip planning and this particular B&B was a real find and more than lived up to the message on the original posting. Ivano and his wife Teri could not have been more gracious or helpful advising on some of the best places to visit, providing maps and tips and laying on some of the best Italian meals we've ever had. Their B&B was a welcome respite from the hurly burly of Roman site- seeing. Our accomodations were a self contained Chalet in their olive grove (we even took part in their olive harvest)and Ivano saw to it that we were driven and picked up at the train station whenever we went into Rome. Ivano, best described as a real Renaissance man, is one of the best cooks we've ever encountered and provided us with some of our best holiday memories. When we moved on to Tuscany he was even able to direct us to B&B owners he knew saving us all kinds of grief and making our Italian experience that much better. Meeting with his other guests at the end of each day also helped us plan each new day and make decisions on where to move onto. They are a truly beautiful couple and made our trip very special. If you're planning a trip to Rome/Italy you should check them out at www.eyl.it
The "eyl" in their address stands for "enjoy your life" and they make every effort to make sure that you do.

L'Altra Luna B & B, Roma
We recently returned from Italy, starting our visit in Rome. We stayed at the L'Altra Luna B & B and I highly recommend this location, especially if you want a taste of what it is really like to live like the locals. Assunta was the most amazingly friendly and helpful hostess you could ever ask for. The apartment was clean, comfortable, large and outfitted with a modern bathroom. The kitchen/dining area is shared with a single room at the other end, but at all times we had our privacy. Assunta came every morning and made us a very large breakfast that kept us going all morning. The location is about a 10-minute walk to Termini Station--excellent for getting anywhere in Rome. E-mail Assunta at florassunta@libero.it The cost for our five nights in Rome was 450 EUR, but the best thing about our visit was that Assunta and her family became our very dear friends.

Great B&B in Amsterdam
Although not mentioned in Ricks guide book my daughter and I stayed at Maes's Bed and Breakfast in Amsterdam and it was wonderful. The room was perfect, a very comfortable bed, well appointed furnishings and a sparkling clean bathroom. Breakfast was beautifully prepared with fresh dutch pancakes, a variety of fruit, croissants, ham and cheese and Ken and Vlad, the owners, did everything they could to make our 5 day visit enjoyable. The guest breakfast room was always open and stocked so you could make tea or coffee any time of the day or help yourself to a piece of fruit or a pastry. The location is within easy walking distance of central Amsterdam. There are great places to eat close by including a a Thai restaurant recommended by Rick, just next door. If I am ever blessed to be back in Amsterdam I will stay there again.

Casa Portagioia
Casa Portagioia in Tuscany. . .we cannot recommend this property highly enough. This is our piece of paradise; we spent enormous amounts of time reading and researching before we found it. We wrestled with simply keeping it a secret, but others shared it with us, so we in turn decided to share it here. A restored farmhouse set in the middle of olive trees and vineyards in the Val di Chio (near Cortona)--pastoral and sublime, really. The accomodations are perfection--charming decor, high quality bed and bath linens and soaps/shampooing with pillow spray, to boot. Our high standards have been met and exceeded on both of our stays, and we are in the process of dreaming of our third stay now. The proprietors, Terry and Marcello, are beyond fun and gracious. Marcello is an incredible chef and will prepare at your request the freshest of salads and divine pastas as you loll by a glistening pool that beckons you with its Roman steps. Don't forget to smell the abundance of lavender as it caresses your walks on the property. And don't forget to admire the 100 plus terracotta pots brimming with geraniums and so many other gorgeous fiori. And don't forget to enjoy that unforgettably beautiful view across this Tuscan valley. Can you tell we love this place?

Corte Campana - Venice
My wife and I and four other travelling companions stayed with Riccardo at Corte Campana in Venice in November, 2007. Great location and great host! Riccardo provided excellent suggestions for places to eat (where the locals eat) and places to shop off the beaten tourist path. One of the individuals in our party had booked at another hotel – which turned out not to be a good experience for her. After the first night Riccardo brought in an extra cot for her to stay with the rest of us at Corte Campana. He was a great host in every respect. Will definitely stay again when we are back in Venice!

bath uk bed and breakfast
We spent two happy nights at cornerways bed and breakfast in Bath, the owner Sue was wonderful, when we arrived she had tea and cookies for us, then we all sat down and she gave us an overview of Bath, she is very knowledgable about Bath history and attractions. She has a lot of extras for a reasonable price, we paid 80 pounds for a triple, including a delicious full english breakfast. She also provided bottled water, chocolates, tea, fresh milk, and hot cocoa in our room every night. Sue has comfortable and clean rooms in a very central location, we could walk to the city center in about 10 minutes. Cornerways bed and breakfast was one of the highlights of our trip. Cornerways should definately be one of Rick Steves recommendations!

France and Italy
During July my wife and I went for a 2100 mile, 23 day drive and found a few outstanding places we'd like to share. Our first and last (as we re-upped for our last two days as well) La Vallombreuse in Menthon St. Bernard very near (.5 miles) Lake Annecy, Annecy (15 min.) and 45 mins from Geneva . It is an beautifully decorated manor home. (La-vallombreuse.com) Odile and Jean-Eric Ougier are the owners and Odile speaks perfect english and both were wonderful hosts. We stayed 3 days at the beginning of our trip and 2 at the end. They have a very nice French breakfast. Rooms and baths are large. Great place.
Second was in Equisheim - Auberge Alsacienne which I believe is in Ricks books but the town and the Hotel were perfect for our visit. Rooms are small but very nicely appointed. Has private parking. http://www.auberge-alsacienne.net/en/index-en.htm
Last in Castelrotto- Hotel Sonnenhof http://www.hotelsonnenhof.it /en/sonnenhof/welcome/ This is a really great place with Breakfast, and Dinner included for 139 Euros, our large corner room had two large balconies, sitting area ,and large bath. facility is lovely, food excellent, indoor pool, spa, amazing views, indoor parking and they gave passes to all the major scenic lifts in the rooms for no charge. Our most expensive but best deal of the trip.
Two additional things 1. GET A GPS. This is our fourth long driving vacation in Europe and I can't possibly relay how wonderful an addition it was (no arguments !) Also we have used the Peugeot Lease from Europe by car 3 times now and what a fantastic program. http://www.ebctravel.com/ only caviot is there is a min. of 17 days, but no lines no waiting and personal service.

Loire Valley Gites and b&B and Normandy!
We have recently stayed at a couple of places in France.
The first being in Normandy, La Ferme du Pressoir - Odile, the French owner has to be the main reason for staying here ..she is sooo lovely. Ideally placed for visting the Sites of D-day etc..
Also we stayed in the Loire Valley at
La Prairie, who have self catering cottages and B&B accommodation.
A super spot to stay being a little north of the pretty town of Saumur, perfect for visiting the Chateaux Chenconceau, Chambord (a little further) Amboise, Azay Le Rideau, Villandry Tours and Angers. Very friendly hosts who helped us out enourmously when my husband had a problem with his diabetes - they phoned the ambulance and accompanied us to the Hospital - a life saver ..literally!!!
We cannot thank them enough for their help!

IL-Poggiolo B&B - Florence
Il-Poggiolo is a wonderful B&B outside of Florence. My wife and I stayed with Grazielle and her three beautiful collies for out anniversary trip of Italy. Grazielle is a wonder hostess who did little things to make your stay great; a guided tour of the nearby Tuscany village, to a bottle of wine to celebrate our anniversary, the wonderful breakfasts and of course, information about the area. If you like dogs, her collies are great fun to play with while relaxing on the veranda. They never seem to tire of chasing balls. She made our stay near Florence a great get away. She is located in the country side, with beautiful views of the olive groves.
If you are looking for a place outside of the bustle of Florence, this is a great place to stay. The only concern for late night revelers is that the bus service to il-Poggiolo stops early, so be prepared to take a taxi. When we go back to Italy, we will again visit Grazielle!

Dolce Toscana B&B
My friend and I recently returned from our “girls only” trip to Europe. Our first stay was 3 nights at Dolce Toscana close to Montescudaio Tuscany. What a wonderfully beautiful, quiet and relaxing property with truly gracious hosts.
Silvia’s Son Sebastian drove into town to escort us in and Silvia made reservations for us our first night at a wonderful local restaurant. She mapped out some great sites for us to visit including a day trip to the hill village of Volterra, another to the coastal town of San Vincenzo via La Strada del Vino Vernaccia di San Gimignano (The wine road of the Vernaccia di San Gimignano). She also recommended a wonderful Pensione overlooking Florence where we spent our last 3 nights in Italy.
My only regret is not having stayed longer and the next time we will stay at least a week.
Dolce Toscana was a wonderful home base as there is so much to see and do within a couple of hours in any direction. A truly unforgettable adventure and truly relaxing visit with wonderful hosts.

Home in Rome
Rome - Katja's B&B, Vatican/St Peter's Square.
It felt as if I were staying with friends. Every effort was made to make me truly feel at home and it worked! Gianluca is always available...some Italian businesswomen from Milan got lost driving in Rome, and Gianluca went to meet them at 1AM! The B&B is artfully furnished by Gianluca's Scandinavian girlfriend, Katja--with many treasures that reflect Rome's antiquity. No TV--but who needs TV after spending days walking and walking and getting a taste of Roma! Wish I could have stayed longer---and for 50euros a night, I don't believe I could have found a better place. Breakfast is tasteful and tastefully presented---Gianluca even packed me a lunch for my train ride to Naples the morning I left. I booked through venere.com---here is a website to get a little picture. http://www.liveinrome.com/bb/katja.htm

Very nice B&B in Rome
We stayed at "Le Finestre sul Vaticano" bed and breakfast last September. This was my first time staying at a bed and breakfast. I enjoyed my experience. Its actually a condo located right beside the vatican museum entrance and is on the 6th floor. Each room is equipped with A/C and a private bathroom. The rooms are large and are lockable and provide access to coat hangers and have a tv. There is a nice common room and a beautiful patio for everyone to enjoy. If you've never stayed at a bed and breakfast, it is like staying with a distant relative. When you come in at night time you have to be quiet in order to respect other guests. I think what makes this place so great are the owners (Max and Lavina). Although, Lavina was away with their little and cute baby boy while we were there, Max answered questions and helped us with directions and attractions. Max was so great that when we had an early morning tour he left us breakfast so we wouldn't have an empty stomach, even though it wasn't the regular breakfast time. Definitely over and above the call of duty. The rooms are clean and beds are comfortable. There are nice restaurants nearby and a supermarket where you can pick up cheap beer and wine. The vatican area is very close (5 min) and offers more restaurants and bars. The price is great for the location. We actually saw a best western close by to the bed and breakfast where they were asking 400 cdn dollars a night and our bed and breakfast definitely looked nicer. We paid 90 Euros and were quite happy. Max arranged for taxis and helped us get soccer tickets without being taken advantage of. Again over and above the call of duty. The area is nice and very safe! Visit their website www.romabandb.it If you read this Max & Lavinia, just wanted to say thanks again and will definitely recommend to all my friends!

Le Lys de Castelnaud
In April 2008, we took an enchanting journey into the Dordogne and Perigord Noire region of France. Traveling in the off-season has many advantages, not the least of which is being able to get to know the proprietors of the various B&B’s and small hotels that we frequent. Among the most charming and entertaining people who have befriended us are Nathalie and Dominique , hosts of Le Lys de Castelnaud. Were their efforts heroic? That word may well express what we experienced, for they certainly have gone above and beyond to make memories for their guests. If their goals were to create an ambiance evocative of a more romantic era, to welcome travelers with warmth and good humor, to provide accommodations that are comfortable and peaceful, to serve delicious meals full of the flavors of this region, and to make guests wish they could linger much longer, they succeeded beyond all hope! Though Dominique does not attempt too much English, he is very kind and attentive - the perfect host. The vivacious Nathalie, who speaks English quite charmingly, weaves tales that enthrall and cooks just as well! We would highly recommend reserving for dinners! Visit their website to preview: /www.chambres-dordogne.com/en/index.htm then depart from the usual tourist route to discover this fairy tale come to life.

Snowshill Hill B&B
I would highly recommend Snowshill Hill Bed & Breakfast, near Snowshill & Broadway in the Cotswolds. This accommodation is not included in the 2008 guidebook. (We were actually referred to stay here by the owner of another B&B that is listed in the guidebook.) The B&B is located on a farm, and there are gorgeous views in every direction. We were able to walk around the farm, which added to our wonderful experience. The manager, Jo Willn, is gracious, helpful, and a fantastic cook. Her family is quite charming, and Jo is willing to share her vast knowledge of the area and answer questions about the farm. This B&B is easy to locate in an internet search, and Jo is easy to contact via the internet. If you are staying in the Cotwolds, I cannot say enough to recommend this place. Stay at Snowshill Hill!

Villa Fliedner B&B near Worms, Germany
My husband and I just spent a week at Villa Fliedner in Monsheim, Germany (www.villa-fliedner.de/), a unique and conveniently located B & B. Monsheim is about 8 miles SW of Worms, which is about an hour train ride from Frankurt.
Villa Fliedner is a 2 block walk from the train station. If you would like to avoid the hassle and costs of an auto, you can take the train to see the Mosel Valley and the Rhine. Car rentals are available in Worms if you prefer. There is a fabulous bakery 2.5 blocks away with pretzels, hard rolls, pastries, and tortes along with mini market type needs. There are 2 restaurants within walking distance as well, and they are wonderful. Now, for the unique aspect of this special B&B. The house is over 100 years old, and was built on top of a storage cellar that was built in the 1700's. The proprietor, Andrea, has turned it into a museum of sorts and is proud to take her guests on a special tour. Her cellar tour offers an inspiring tale of WW II survivors, with transcripts of interviews, newspaper clippings and photos. This tour ranked up with the castles we visited. Although the website is in German, Andrea is fluent in English, and is happy to help you with your travel needs. On several occassions she made phone calls in our behalf that made our trip unforgettable.

Paris Suburb B&B (Verneille Sur Seine)
Paris suburb B & B
Located in Verneille Sur Seine, a quick 20 minute ride from De Gaulle airport and close to a train station, Dormouse House B & B opens its gates to a virtual paradise. First you are greeted with the scent of roses and the beauty of an immaculate garden and the sound of the roosting chickens as your eyes notice a romantic wooden facade of a gorgous new home. Inside Lisa greets every guest as if you were royalty and showed us to the Rose suite....with a wall of windows that featured a vista of the restful countryside, vaulted ceiling, and a cozy bedroom with a new (amazing in Europe) bathroom so well stocked that it the heated towel rack even contained an extra terry cloth robe! My first night, Lisa prepared a dinner complete with candleabras and fine silver which only accented all the fine antiques which surrounded us diners. The grounds are so beautiful they were featured in a magazine photo shoot! The surrounding town was filled with excellent wandering running paths and a nice mix of restaurants. As a frequent Paris traveler, this American highly recommends this bed and breakfast. I made my reservation through this link...but there are others. Corte Campana B&B
Having just returned from a 2+ week journey/adventure in Italy with Rick Steves Italy and Rome as our bible, I can honestly say his recommended B&B's were spot on in every way. We started in Venice at Riccardo's Corte Campana, and could not have had a warmer, friendlier, more helpful host to initiate us into the joys of Italy. Riccardo was easy to communicate with, easy to joke with, quick to respond to inquiries. Not only that, but the charm of his family home, now his B&B, was great! Good breakfast, good coffee, easy internet access, honest, sincere interest in making our stay a happy one. Thanks, Rick, for all your recommendations and self-guided tours. Band B in Cotswolds
We are just back from 8 weeks in the UK and we spent 2 nights in the Cotswolds...a little village called Broadway at a lovely b and b called HADLEY HOUSE. It is just off the High street and is on the internet if you'd like to see it. It is an old house completely redone in 2007 so very lovely. We are seniors and had the main floor twin bedded room with adjoining sitting room. Our friend had the other main floor double bedded room. Both rooms are ensuite as well!
We are Obama supporters so it was fun to engage the cook (owner) in discussion, NOT argument, after breakfast. We left with my 25cent bet against his 20p wager that Obama would win the Presidency. He thought O was "too young". I did slyly mention he was running against "too old"

Ardconnel House - Inverness
My husband and I stayed at Ardconnel House in Inverness for a few days in early September. It was our second stay there. From the moment we arrived we were greeted by John and Liz with a very warm welcome and hugs. It was like seeing old friends again.
Unfortunately earlier in our trip my husband was injured while playing rugby in Edinburgh so his leg was in a cast and he had to walk with crutches. John and Liz were genuinely concerned about his well being and asked if we had eaten dinner yet. We hadn’t and were starving as it was 8:00 pm. Since he couldn’t walk very far with the crutches, John insisted on driving us to a local restaurant and Liz gave us her cell phone so we could call them when we were done eating. Then John came back and picked us up. In addition, the next day Liz let us use their telephone so we could call our airline and rental car company to let them know about my husbands injury and make special arrangements for our departure later in the week.
Since our stay with them was toward the end of our trip we were in serious need of doing laundry. We asked Liz about the location of the laundry mat and nearby parking so my husband won’t have to walk so far. She said she was doing their laundry that day and had room for ours too so it would be no trouble to wash it for us. That was very generous of her and above and beyond what I’d ever expect anyone to do for us. Her offer allowed us to get an earlier start on our long day of touring the Black Isle and we were able to see much more than we otherwise would’ve had time for. In addition, John and Liz had lent us their driving atlas and gave us several suggestions on places to see in the area. When we returned back that night our laundry was done and folded in our bag.
And I don’t want to forget to mention their breakfasts, which are fabulous and very plentiful. You definitely won’t leave there hungry as they have a large variety of items to choose from. Their rooms are also very nice and have everything you could possibly need during your stay.
John and Liz are truly amazing people and they genuinely care about their guests. We are very grateful to them and appreciate all they did for us. What could’ve been a very stressful stay due to my husbands injury ended up being very relaxing. My only regret is that we couldn’t stay at Ardconnel House longer. We’ll definitely stay with them again though.

Ardconnel House Inverness
We planned our trip to Scotland with the help of the Great Britain guide and also John & Elizabeth at Ardconnel House who, by email, provided great suggestions for alternative places to visit that aren't mentioned in the book.
We took the very scenic train ride from Edinburgh to Inverness, and on John's advice hired a car from Focus car hire, who are based in the train station
John also provided us with detailed maps which enabled us to get to the fabulous Dunrobin Castle, and to take in salmon leaping up the waterfalls at the nearby Falls of Shin. The Isle of Skye is only a couple of hours drive from Inverness, and we spent a very enjoyable day exploring all around there including visits to Armadale and Dunvegan castles.
Great freshly cooked breakfasts was just the perfect start to each day!
Hoping to make a return trip again next year.

Wonderful B&B in Rome
We are a german couple living in U.S.
My wife and I just came back from a wonderful week in Rome,Italy...we stayed at Katja's B&B,just a block away from Vatican city.

room was extra clean and location is perfect expecially for the vatican but it's well connected to any other interesting sight in Rome.

My sister and I stayed at “Le Finestre sul Vaticano” B&B in Rome for 6 days, hosted by Lavinia and Max. They were exceptionally helpful and friendly, (as they already had been in our internet conversations during planning). These friendly and nice hosts know all the good places to go in Rome and outside. Hotel Lotschberg - Interlaken
We stayed at the Hotel Lotschberg in Interlaken for two nights. Pluses - The owner and staff are very efficient, friendly and helpful. We got great tips about sightseeing around Jungfrau. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. The location is very convenient to downtown Interlaken, the train and the bus routes. Rick's description was right on!
Minuses - I thought it was very overpriced and not the best value for the area. The breakfast, although of high quality was very minimal. For that kind of money put some hard bolied eggs out and some more fruit. We also learned later that the rooms up on the mountain, Grindelwald for example, are about 40% less expensive and you get to wake up with a great view! One interesting point was that when I asked about the "Rick Steve's Discount" I got a very odd answer. They told me that 90% of their cusotmers come from Rick Steves, and they are always full so they don't have to give the discount. Aren't they just missing the point here somehow? The reason they are so successful is because of Rick and the books we buy so .....where's the discount?
Overall a pleasant stay but it would have been more pleasant for 40 CHF less.

When we needed any advice or directions, Sally was eager to help. She called and made dinner reservations for us, offered to help if we needed anything. One night, we came back from dinner and she was there and offered good conversation along with a well-needed glass of wine. We stayed in Casa Portagioia with Terry & Marcello for three nights (1/2/3 Sept 08) and I have rarely come across a place which I would "unreservedly recommend". The rooms, breakfasts, facilities (beautiful pool overlooking the rolling Tuscan hills) and the welcome were all magnificent. There were lots of lovely touches one wouldn't expect in B&B accommodation - fluffy towels/bath & pool, slippers & robes, and a beautifully equiped bathroom. We were also lucky enough to have dinner one evening on the terrace - food beautifully prepared & cooked by Marcello & served by Terry with his wonderful sense of humour!

The best B&B Ever
The best B & B we have ever stayed at was The Tides Reach Guesthouse in Mumbles, Wales. The moment we set foot in the door Mary brought us fresh coffee and tea and cookies and went through our itinerary and helped us plan. This was especially important since we did not have a car and were taking buses and the train. When our plans fell through for our next destination she sat at the computer and helped us plan our next stop and even booked the hotel for us. The room was luxurious, the food was top notch and Mary and Lin couldn't have made us feel more welcome and cared for.

Great Bed and Breakfast in Rome Italy
This B&B is great!!! It was our first time at a B&B ever and we enjoyed it. Max and Lavinia are very informative, helpful and just awesome!
Rooms were quiet, very clean, spacious enough and comfortable. The AC worked well. Breakfast was pleasant and adequate. This was a great deal in a nice neighborhood. It was very convenient to some great restaurants, a couple of which we even received discounts for from the B&B. The teen minute walk to the Vatican allowed us to see some "real" sights and shops we would have missed, otherwise. The subway is about a 3 minutes walk.
Max and Lavinia make you very welcome and are a mine of information on what to and how to get there. They do not mind spending time to talk and advise. Very relaxed and easy going atmosphere. I spend a lot of time in hotels for work and this was so much friendlier. Visit their website www.romabandb.it

We recently stayed 4 nights with Maggie at the Royal Stewart B&B and could not have been more pleased. It was like going home to visit mom, she was so friendly and accommodating. Breakfast was the traditional European meats, cheeses, and breads (good quality), but you can ask for cereal if you prefer, and it is usually available.

We used Rick's suggestions for most of our accommodations on our recent UK trip and found them to be even better than expected [The Parkside Inn B&B in Bath and the Amar Agua B&B in Edinburgh]. We also found a couple of delightful establishments not listed in the travel guide.
In Llangollen, N. Wales, where we attended the 2008 International Eisteddfod, we stayed 4 nights at the Britannia Inn (approximately 1 mile from Llangollen at Horseshoe Pass). The room was clean and comfortable, the food was great, and the hospitality among the best.

My wife, two kids and I stayed a week at Corte Campana in Venice this summer (July 2008), and LOVED it. The rooms and common space are very nice; so is the breakfast; and the location by St. Mark's is great. Best of all, though, was the host, Riccardo. A fantastic guy!

Le Jardin de la Cite - Carcassonne, France
Le Jardin de la Cite in Carcassonne was as good as it gets for us. We spend two wonderful nights in the facility which is run by a mother and son. The breakfasts were delicious and food plentiful. The accommodations were excellent and a beautiful pool is on the grounds as well. You are also a five minute walk to the walled city. The hosts were simply outstanding. A tremendous place to stay and we recommend it without reservations.

Royal Stewart, Bruges, Belgium
In early August, I stayed at the Royal Stewart along with 2 friends. This was my third time staying at the Royal Stewart, as I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Bruges. As usual, Maggie's warmth and genuine interest in her guests' comfort was evident from the start. The rooms are clean and beautifully decorated. The beds are comfortable and, after a good night's rest, a delicious and filling breakfast awaits. One of the things I like most about visiting the Royal Stewart is the way Maggie introduces guests to each other at breakfast and we can talk about what we've done, what we plan to do, what worked out and what didn't. Not only do we have the advantage of Maggie's knowledge of the area, but we also find out what other travelers have enjoyed. I find that I want to return to Bruges over and over again and it is not only due to the charm of the city, but also to the graciousness and comfort of the Royal Stewart.

Glenn-na-Smol, Howth, Ireland
Do yourself a favor and stay in Howth instead of Dublin, and stay with Sean and Kitty at Glenn-na-Smol. Howth is a delightful little town near Dublin, described in Rick's book. My wife and I just spent a week in Ireland, and the mother-son team of Sean and Kitty Rickards were our favorite hosts. While we had great experiences other places, Sean really went above and beyond for us. I put a small scratch on our rental car the first morning in Ireland in my sleepy fright of driving on the left, and Sean gave us some cleaners and such to diminish the effect. He also loaned us a detailed map of the country, which we returned before we left. In addition he was a great host and fun to talk with in the evenings/over breakfast. We'll definately be staying there again next time.

B&B in Interlaken, Switzerland
For the budget traveller in the Berner Oberland (well, just about everything is expensive there!), Katy's B&B family room gave us a happy surprise: a microwave and refrigerator. We were able to buy groceries across the street at Migros and avoid the high cost of restaurant meals, instead spending our money on mountain lift adventures. Katy's is also right near the train station--so convenient! It isn't fancy, but Katy is very kind and accomodating.

Le Finestre sul Vaticano B&B ROME ITALY
Our place to stay in Rome was the highlight of our entire 1 month tour of europe. The owners of Le Finestre sul Vaticano (Max & Lavinia with the help of Lourdes) make great breakfast and are extremely friendly and helpful. The beds are comfortable and the rooms with their private bathroom are very large and clean. The Vatican Museums and St Peter are walking distance and the rest of the ancient city is very easy to get to. Nice restaurants, shops, ice-cream shop, banks ... all very closeby. Would definately recommend to anyone, and will definately return in the future.

Super B&B in Normandy region
Just returned from four great nights in Normandy. Rick got it right when he endorsed Le Mas Normand in the small village of Ver-Sur-Mer. Mylene was super helpful and really enhanced our visit to the region by providing tips for sightseeing, driving routes, restaurants, etc. Mylene's husband, Christian, whipped up fantastic breakfasts with homemade jams, bread pudding, local cider, etc. The B&B is a pleasant five min. walk from the beach. However, the beach isn't too spectular in Ver-Sur-Mer. Much nicer down the coast in Arromanches. Ver-Sur-Mer earns big points for being centrally located and sooo quiet. There's no "tourist" vendors in the town peddaling D-Day trinkets. It's perfect if you're looking get local in a hurry. Again, highly recommend.

Cabrerets
I just finished a ten-day backpacking trip through the Lot and Cele River valleys, staying at B&Bs in most places. One of the distinct highlights was Un Jardin Dans La Falaise (The Garden in the Cliff) in Cabrerets. Personally, I think Cabrerets has all the charm of St.-Cirq-Lapopie without the tourists, and the Grotte du Peche Merle with its 20,000 year old cave paintings is less than a KM away. Simon and Magali have done a remarkable job of restoring a very old house built into the cliffs. The rooms are really nice, the view is simply spectacular, & the prices are good, but the best part is Magali's cooking. The lady is truly a gourmet chef. For E20 per person, the table d'hote is among the best I've ever had. The web site is http://www.likhom.com/anglais/bnb.asp?bed-and-breakfast=Un-Jardin-dans-La-Falaise&city=cabrerets&code=MP4608004.

Elizabeth and John couldn't have been more helpful - as well as great advice for places to eat at night, they arranged trips for us to visit the fabulous Cawdor Castle and Culloden Battlefield.

The Allerdale GuestHouse in Keswick (Lake District) is the best B&B I've ever stayed in! It's immaculate, close to town, and Tony & Helen are the most helpful, friendly people! The breakfast was fantastic! Go for the superior double for only about 5 more pounds-worth it! We had the regular double and it was pretty small. This was our first stay on a 6-country European tour and it was delightful. Freida and Benno's "family loft" is huge, clean and has the best beds in all of Europe. Great B & B in Normandy area
I would like to heartily recommend a B & that is in the tiny town of Meuvaines, France (4 km from Arromanches, 10 km from Bayeux) which makes it an ideal, quiet location from which to explore the D-day beaches. Located in the midst of peaceful farmland, one of the highlights of this newly-renovated old farmhouse is the excellent gourmet cooking. Nightly dinner is a option (for 28 Euros each, including wine), prepared by the host who was formerly a chief cook in Paris. In addition, breakfasts include homemade breads and go beyond the typical continental fare. Meals are shared with other guests; when we were there, couples from Great Britain and from France joined us and our teenage daughter for lively conversation. Accommodations are also very comfortable. The hostess, Sandrine speaks English and was helpful in suggesting local activities. Here is the contact information:

Amazing Ripa Medici B&B in Orvieto, Italy!
We would like to recommend Ripa Medici B&B in Orvieto, in Umbria about an hour north of Rome. Sabrina, the owner, made our stay the absolute best among all of our time in Italy. When we had a bit of trouble finding the place, she offered to meet us at the top of the funicular and escort us. Then, we entered our glorious apartment - with gorgeous bedroom, sparkling clean bathroom, lovely kitchen, dining room and a living room overlooking the Umbrian countryside - with the smell of a freshly baked lemon cake she had just made for us. Everything about our stay in Orvieto was magical - we didn't even want to leave our apartment, even though there was lots to do in town! Sabrina made our stay so special - besides the cake, she had stocked the fridge with food in case we were hungry and gave us a detailed map with suggestions for activities during our stay. We can't recommend this place enough - it's worth a trip to Orvieto just to stay here! Ask for the apartment, for sure! Contact Sabrina at ripamedici@libero.it. Enjoy!

Favorite B&B
Helga Lenz Zimmer in Hallstatt, Austria was my favorite place recommended by Rick. It was a 5 minute walk up steps on the side of the mountain, but the view of the town, the lake and mountains, from our 3rd floor suite was breathtaking. The decor was Austrian folk, light pine floors, cabinetry, furnishings, a bedroom, front room with TV and a huge bathroom with pretty blue tiles on the floor and yellow and blue rugs with a shower and the light pine all around and the lace curtain in the window. The price was moderate, cheaper than most places we stayed. Frau Lenz made a wonderful breakfast for us each morning and the day we had to leave before breakfast to catch the train, Frau Lenz made us breakfast to go in a sack and left it on the table for us. She was helpful with sightseeing and gave us discount tickets to the Salt Mine. I highly recommend Lenz Zimmer to everyone.

Great location -- few blocks from Termini, one block from Metro, main bus stop just outside the door, very clean facility, great breakfast. Another Venice Corte Campana Fan
My husband and I and our 13-year-old son recently returned from a 3-week trip to Italy. The last 4 nights of our trip were spent in Venice at the Corte Campana B&B. We could not have been happier with the accomodations and especially loved our host, Riccardo.
Arriving hot and tired, Riccardo quickly helped us get settled into our large air-conditioned room. The communal area has seating for breakfast as well as a shared refrigerator and free Internet access. The daily breakfast was substantial. Riccardo would bring in different items for our morning meal and he was especially accommodating to our 13-year-old by providing cereal and hot chocolate. During breakfast Riccardo would ask us what our plans were for the day and he would guide us toward the best and most efficient way to see the essential Venice. He would make dinner reservations for us at wonderful restaurants. We had some of our best Italian meals at his suggested spots. Riccardo was so friendly and helpful. His personality is very effusive and positive. We all felt that Corte Campana was our "home away from home" and without a doubt would return there for another visit.

I recently returned from a wonderful trip with my best girlfriend Anna Maria to Ireland. We used Rick's book and drove around most of the country. While we were in Dingle, we stayed at the Milestone B & B. The rooms were nice, the food was great and Barbara is my hero. After leaving and driving north, I discovered that I had forgotten two of my linen shirts in the closet. Not only did Barbara call me before we reached the next town to let me know that I had left them, but she packaged and mailed them to reach me in Portrush several days later. She is such a kind lady and if I ever get back to Ireland, I will definately stay with her.

Outstanding hospitality at the Nicolas Inn in Rome!
My husband and I recently spent 5 nights at the Nicolas Inn in Rome, and it was by far the best place we'd stayed during our trip to Italy! The location is great; only a few minutes to the Colosseum, about 30-minute walk to the Spanish Steps, and the Metro stop is just up the street. Our room and bathroom were very clean and large by European standards, and the air conditioning worked well. It's small and quiet, and breakfast is served at a restaurant just a minute's walk down the street (where you can eat outside and people-watch). The best thing about the Nicolas Inn, however, is the outstanding hospitality of its owners, couple Melissa and Francois. When we arrived, tired and sweaty from the incredibly hot weather, they welcomed us with glasses of cold water and spent time orienting us to Rome with a good map, and very helpful recommendations for restaurants (which turned out to be excellent), shops, and tourist attractions. Their warm, friendly approach and continued guidance throughout our stay significantly improved our experience of Rome. (For example, Melissa offered to make us a reservation at the Borghese Gallery, and I'm so grateful that she did, because although it wasn't something we'd initially planned on seeing, it turned out to be our favourite museum in Rome.) They even left us a complimentary bottle of (delicious) wine on our second-last night! Melissa and Francois went above and beyond in their hospitality, and we will recommend their lovely B&B to everyone we know who plans to visit Rome!

Corte Campana, Venice Italy
We just returned from a very enjoyable and memorable trip to Venice in June of 2008. We were fortunate enough to stay at the Corte Campana which is very near to St. Mark's Square in a very quiet neighborhood. Upon arrival, we were greeted by Riccardo with his warm and endearing personality. He greeted us at the front door and offered to carry suitcases. Riccardo grew up in Venice and made us feel welcome in his family home. He oriented us to the city giving us a city map and asked what types of foods we preferred eating before suggesting restaurants and his favorite cicchetti bar. He answered questions we had about sight seeing and was readily available whenever we needed help. He made us feel as if we had a home away from home and did not hesitate to answer questions about the Venetian culture, points of view, as well as what it was like to grow up in Venice. We left feeling like we had truly made a good friend...we'd definitely recommend Corte Campana and can hardly wait to return! We fell in love with Venice!

Le Mansarde B&B Venice Italy
We (2 moms, 2 teenage daughters) just returned from Venice this week. Our stay at Le Mansarde B&B (email: stefano.cazzaro@fastwebnet.it) was fantastic. We were in the loft apartment, with a small kitchenette, hardwood floors, a/c, quality linens and towels, sofa bed and twin beds in the loft, reasonably priced at 160Euro, for 4 of us. Located only 10 minutes from the train station, in the Cannaregio, near the historic Jewish Ghetto, it was a quiet place to sleep at night. From the time we arrived, Anna-Maria made us feel at home providing us with maps, showing us her favorite places to eat, interesting churches and ideas for sightseeing, tours available and everything we needed to know about the vaparetto, which stopped conveniently close by. Each morning we ate breakfast out on her terrace, overlooking the Venetian rooftops with the local outdoor food market below. These delicious breakfasts consisted of fresh juices, pastries and sweets, fresh fruit, yogurt, smoothies and fantastic coffee. If you plan ahead, she will do a cooking class/dinner with you. This was the highlight of our trip. We prepared a 5 course meal ending with a heavenly strawberry sorbetto which we can only dream about now! We ate our dinner on the terrace, overlooking the sunset and night lights of Venice. Our hostess Anna-Maria is an amazing, talented lady who not only provides an immaculate place to stay, but she also is a consummate chef, sings in a gospel choir, teaches music and is expertly decorating the 3 new bedrooms she is renting in her home, with antiques, Venetian tiles, and beautiful linens. She is sweet and generous, and we all felt we had immediately found a friend. We highly recommend her bed and breakfast!!!

Great place and friendly hosts in Rome ITALY
My husband and I stayed at Le Finestre sul Vaticano bed and breakfast in Rome last May and it was our first time staying at a bed and breakfast and we really enjoyed our experience. It’s actually a condo located right beside the Vatican museum entrance and is on the 6th floor. Each room is equipped with A/C and a private bathroom. The rooms are large and are lockable and provide access to coat hangers and have a TV. There is a nice common room and a beautiful patio for everyone to enjoy and wireless Internet connection is available in all the B&B.
If you've never stayed at a bed and breakfast, it is like staying with a distant relative and you will feel like to be at home … but with Romans around!
We think what also makes this place so great are the owners (Max and Lavina and their little baby boy Lucio … he is so pretty!). They answered questions and helped us with directions and attractions. Lavinia was so great that when we had an early morning tour she left us breakfast so we wouldn't have an empty stomach, even though it wasn't the regular breakfast time. Definitely over and above the call of duty.
The rooms are very clean and beds are comfortable. There are nice restaurants nearby and a supermarket where you can pick up good wine and sandwiches and un unbelievable ice-cream shop … “Millennium” … unforgettable! The Vatican City was just in front of the B&B and Vatican Museum is very close (5 min). Le Finestre sul Vaticano, is located on a quiet residential street, and in a nice area that makes you feel very safe. Just 3 or 4 minute walk to 2 different metro stations, and the bus stops just up the street a bit. You can truly get anywhere easily, and back again till quite late.
Their room rate is great for Rome! We actually saw a 4 stars Best Western hotel very close by to the bed and breakfast where they were asking 350 U$D dollars a night and our bed and breakfast definitely looked much more lovely and enjoyable and we paid only 90 Euros per room per night and were extremely happy. Max arranged for taxis and helped us get soccer tickets without being taken advantage of. Again over and above the call of duty.
I heartily recommend this B&B to anyone who asks and will not hesitate to book with them again if I return to Rome.
If you read this, Max & Lavinia, just wanted to say thanks again and will definitely recommend to all my friends!

Guest House Arco dei Tolomei, Rome, Italy
From the outside it is unassuming. The entrance is unmmarked, and there is small flight and a half of stairs to climb, before you open the door into the wonderful world of Guest House Arco dei Tolomei in the quietly vibrant neighbourhood of Trastevere. The rooms are beautifully decorated, the breakfast table is worth a picture, the shower in the room according to my husband who travels a lot on business - was the "best in Europe" that he'd experienced.
Most appreciated however, was the genuine hospitality of Marco and Gianna, and Catia's great advice and help in booking activities, making restaurant reservations, and giving directions. Catia loves using GoogleEarth to show you your destination!! It's also convenient to have 24-hour acccess to their computer to read up on the next day's destination or check email from home.
We loved the very picturesque Roman neighbourhood and local restaurants. Whichever way you turn, there are many wonderful, authentic restaurants to select from within a 2-minute walk. And it's only a 10-minute walk over the Tiber River to the ancient city ruins. I can't imagine a more perfect place to stay.
And being pet owners and missing our own dog, we loved visiting Marco and Gianna's two dogs - French Bulldog Frodo, and Jack Russell Pixel. They're not allowed in the guest area, but we visited them on the threshold of their courtyard and it gave us our "dog-fix".
We can't imagine staying anywhere else when we return to Rome.

Corte Campana
We just returned from a 2 week trip to Italy. Our last two nights were spent in Venice at the Corte Campana. I cannot begin to describe how wonderful our stay was, but I will try.
We arrived in Venice by train and must admit, were a bit overwhelmed. But, Riccardo, the proprietor of this lovely B&B, gave us excellent directions to his place including which vaporetto bus to take and we found it without any problems.
The B&B is located about 2 blocks from St. Mark's on a quiet street. It is actually Riccardo’s family home and is quite charming and filled with beautiful Venetian furnishings. Three spacious, clean and air-conditioned bedrooms overlook a quiet courtyard. There is also a computer with internet that can be used at any time as well as a small refrigerator in the main living room.
Riccardo immediately made us feel right at home. On our first evening, we were walking outside and trying to decide where we should eat. We ran into Riccardo and he not only recommended a restaurant, but walked us to it and made our reservation for us. He also showed us an excellent place to buy wine. The wine was in barrels and you could get a 1 ½ liter bottle filled with your choice. Riccardo told us his favorite which we chose and it was the best wine we had on our trip! Riccardo also recommended a place to purchase our Murano glass. The quality and prices were great and when we mentioned that Riccardo had sent us, we were given a substantial discount. Riccardo also gave us helpful tips on the best times to see various sites in the city.
If you want a truly Venetian experience, this is the place to stay! We completely enjoyed our stay in Riccardo’s lovely home. Our only regret is that we didn’t stay longer!

This B&B made us feel like we lived in Orvieto. The apartment was spacious and comfortable. It had a secure/gated parking space right outside too! We want to recommend a real find in Warsaw: Boutique B & B. This is a small B & B, perfectly located to allow walking to many points of interest, with very helpful and friendly staff, and a breakfast to die for. What a wonderful host Dorothy Vidler is! She makes you feel so welcome and runs a fine B&B. The proper Brit breakfast is made to order. For those that have to stay wired, she provides internet connections that are simple and free.
In prepping for my trip, I wrote about 10 of the B&Bs in the Dalkief Road section - Dorothy efficiently responded first. So if you find yourself in Ediburgh, this is a great place to stay.

We just returned from a two week vacation in Ireland and stayed at 5 B&B's between Dublin and Galway. Our favorite was the Dingle Harbour Lodge in Dingle. The hosts, Kevin and Clare O'Shea, were the most gracious of all our hosts in Ireland and gave us a lot of information about the area and tips on what to see. The breakfasts were wonderful, the rooms clean with a wonderful view of the harbor, and it was a short walk to pubs, the tourist info center, and the shopping area. We stayed for 2 nights at this incredible B & B in Florence. It is located about a block and a half from the duomo. Each room has a flat screen tv, a computer with internet access (free), dvd's to borrow (free) a lovely little courtyard and a delicious breakfast. The technical updates were a refreshing change, but it still had the charm of a centuries-old building in central Florence. I doublt if many 5 star hotels in Florence have this to offer. Massay Gite in the Lorie region of France
We have just returned from a week in the French Lorie Valley region. We stayed at Massay Gite which is located in the quaint village of Massay. The gite was roomy and comfortable. The accommodations were outstanding and the facilities were great. The stove, fridge, microwave, etc. were all brand new. The bed was comfortable and shower was great. It is located within easy driving distance of the numerous chateaux of the region. However, the thing that made the stay so special was the hospitality of Damien and Alice Bird. They were helpful when it came to advice of places to see and things to do. Damien and his delightful son even took us to a goat farm where we were able to taste some delicious goat cheese. We also enjoyed our conversations with them in the evenings and the glass of wine that accompanied it. We highly recommend Massay Gite.

Superb hospitality at B and B near Bayeux France
Superb Hospitality at B and B near Bayeux France. We made La Ferme du Pressoir our base in Normandy( 1 wk), and it certainly exceeded expectations. It is a working farm (a colt was born while we were there)with three beautiful rooms in the farmhouse, and a cottage with three bedrooms, kitchen(with well stocked refrigerator),LR, DR, patio. The Proprietress, Odile, is so gracious and goes out of her way to please. We could not believe the breakfasts - 4 or 5 kinds of cheese, meat, bread and pastry, plus cereal, omelets(yes, the eggs were still warm)yogurt, fruit, different every day. Odile has a great file of things to do and places to eat. The place was immaculate. The beds were great. The town itself has a formidable patisserie, a great boucherie, and 2 nice restaurants (La viele Normande was great, about $25 -35 for menu with lots of food). Bayeux makes a great base for seeing Normandie and Brittany. If you go to Dinan(Brittany, near Mont St Michele), La Fleur de Sel has incredible food and wine. We cannot say enough about Odile's kindness, hospitality, and generosity, and she is pure French.

My husband and I just spent a week at Punta Civita and I cannot speak highly enough of Roberto and Nadda. They have created a breathtaking and peaceful location with unmatched views of the Sorrento Bay. Roberto was helpful in suggesting places to eat and visit. Ravello is a 45 minute hike from Punta Civita. Amalfi is a 30 minute hike. The location for this B&B was perfect for us because it is quiet and removed from all of the tourism noises. But, you should be physically prepared for some hiking unless you hire a car to go anywhere. The trade off was well worth it for us. Reasonably priced too. You have to go! www.puntacivita.it

Bastide de la Brague, Antibes, France
My husband and I and another couple spent 3 nights at Bastide de la Brague in late May (2008). The accommodations were great- bedroom with sitting area and bath, around 90 Euros a night. I believe they have about 5 or 6 rooms. You can also eat there at night for 20 Euros from the aperatif to dessert including wine. A real bargain. The owners were wonderful. Very friendly. It was one big happy party each evening with the owners and guests and languages spoken. We left feeling like family. The food was delicious and plentiful. One member of our group had developed bronchitis and needed to see a doctor. The owner made the call, drove him there and waited to drive him back. No taxis. She was terrific. I speak French well, so that helped and the owner speaks some English. Well worth a visit.

VERY friendly
There are not many reviews on this place but that is a shame.
Highly recommend, great location and VERY friendly and helpful lady that runs it. Big room, shower and terrace for only 68 Euro in Stresa which is good. (so it is higher than $49/night, we also got the shower/bath ensuite). I believe we found on Venere.com but they do have there own website.
I can't say enough good things - quiet room, very relaxing, lady called us a cab and helped us w/ other activities.
Stay here if you are coming to stresa and don't want to pay $400 a night for one of the snobby places which are right around the corner from this place. Luina was very convenient to restaurants and shopping and such.
We got a little board in Stresa - not much to do. The islands are kind of a joke considering they wanted 10 euro a person on top of the expensive boat ride.
We rented bikes at Hotel Meeting (the brochure says to go to the tourist info across the street, but when it is closed which is alot go to Hotel Meeting across the street) - very reasonable, and rode around the lake 20Km, and then caught the boat back to Stresa. This was VERY enjoyable - if you like biking. There were many people biking too.

Fabulous B&B near Rome, Italy
Il Colle Degli Ulive B&B, near ROME, ITALY
I just spent my honeymoon at Il Colle Degli Ulivi, and I’ve never before been so sad to go home after a holiday – this place is a hidden treasure! It’s a little slice of paradise nestled in the heart of the castelli romani countryside, around 35km from Rome (and around 25-30 minutes by train on a fast, frequent and direct train service directly into Roma Termini).
It’s owned by Terhi and Ivano, a Finnish/Italian couple who work tirelessly to ensure that their visitors leave with wonderful memories of their time in Italy. We are frequent travellers to Italy (this was our 7th trip) and I can honestly say that we have never stayed in better or more welcoming accommodations, and when we left I was on the verge of tears because it felt as though we were leaving close friends behind.
The B&B itself is spotless, comfortable and tranquil, and has been decorated to a beautiful standard, with fresh bright linens and good quality beds and other furnishings. The three rooms are separate from the main house, and form a self-contained block at the bottom of the owner’s extensive garden/olive grove. Each of the three rooms has a spacious and comfortable double bed, a set of bunk beds, an ensuite bathroom with toilet, bidet, sink and shower cubicle (with super-powerful hot water!), and a small outside veranda with a seating area. In addition to this small patio area, the guests have full access to the rest of the gardens, where there are plenty of chairs, tables (and even a couple of hammocks!) in which to relax with a glass of wine and a good book.
Relaxation is the order of the day at Il Colle Degli Ulive. After a busy day spent tramping the streets of Rome, or exploring some of the nearby attractions such as Tivoli, Ostia Antica, Palestrina, Viterbo, Lake Bracciano or Castel Gandolfo, there is nothing better than to relax in the garden sipping a glass of wine whilst waiting for Ivano to signal that dinner is ready. Because of the proximity to Rome, it’s possible to leave Rome by (say) 6pm and still have time to relax in the garden for an hour or more before dinner is served up at the main house at around 8pm…and I’ve never experienced such a beautiful setting in which to relax and unwind.
Even with all the restaurants of Rome to choose from, we still made our way back to Ivano’s for dinner most nights (and we even had a couple of lunches there too!), because frankly there is nothing in Rome to compare with Ivano’s cooking! The meals are fabulous value, and the freshness of the ingredients is amazing (they grow many of their own vegetables and salad in an organic plot halfway between the house and the B&B block, and they source other local produce on a daily basis). Ivano is a wonderful cook, but luckily he’s not the least bit intimidating! Indeed, he takes care not to impose his own tastes on his guests, and is always willing to tailor meals to suit individual tastes, diets and palates. He bends over backwards to ensure maximum satisfaction for every diner.
Conversation around the dinner table is always lively and fun and - with the wine and home-made liqueurs flowing - many dinners stretch into the early hours because the ambiance is so relaxing and enjoyable. We met some wonderful people during our stay, and always felt like part of a vibrant and warm family.
After the evening feasts, the beds are fabulously comfortable, and since the rooms are quiet it’s easy to sleep past one’s normal waking-up time. Luckily, the breakfast is never a rushed affair (you could stagger in at 10am or later if you wished), and the range offered is extensive and delicious (cereals, fruit, yoghurt, toast, biscuits, cake, home-made preserves, cheese, salami etc). The huge breakfast set us up for the day so well that we could sightsee in Rome for hours without any hunger pangs….in fact, we often skipped lunch entirely so that we could do justice to Ivano’s evening feasts!
It would be easy to wax lyrical for pages and pages about the delights of this B&B, but my heartfelt recommendation is that you should simply go there and sample it for yourself! My husband and I love Rome – it’s our favourite place in the whole world – and this was the ideal location from which to enjoy it to its fullest, whilst feeling that one was also experiencing ‘real’ Italy. I didn’t want to leave, and I’m already looking forward to our next visit!

Danish discovery on Funen
After lots of searching on the internet, I found an alternative to the higher priced hotels or the bathless B&Bs on Aero. We are staying at a wonderful B&B near Svenborg, Denmark. We caught the ferry over to Aero for the day, which seemed plenty of time to see the charming village of Aeroskobing and to drive around the island in our rental car.
Chiquita Jensen has an apartment on the second floor that is an oasis for tired travelers who are recovering from Copenhagen sticker-shock. For 500 kroner a night, we have an entire floor with a bedroom, small kitchen, sitting room, balcony with picnic table that has a view of the water (over some rooftops), and a bathroom (bathtub only) with a washer and dryer. The apartment is about 6 times the size of our tiny box in Copenhagen with much more charm and friendliness – at a less expensive price.
Chiquita is gracious, warm, and very accommodating; and her breakfasts are extra special. We’ve had a variety of meats, breads, an egg, fruit, yoghurt, French press coffee, and freshly squeezed orange juice. Not only is the quality outstanding but the presentation (on several trays which you can carry back upstairs) is a work of art. The dishes are elegant and complemented by fresh flowers from her garden.
Our hostess is well-traveled, and the rooms are filled with knick-knacks from all over the globe. The location makes an excellent base to visit Aero, Funen, and Odense.
The address is Stenbukken 18, Svenborg, telephone number 62209660; email Chiquita@mail.dk

Romantik Villa
My husband and I just returned from Portugal a little over 2 weeks ago and we had to share our experience at an amazing little villa that we stayed in during our time in the Algarve!!!
The Romantik Villa is run by an amazing woman by the name Lisa. Located in the heart of Salema, she offers 3 very private and beautifully decorated rooms, each with an amazing view overlooking the Atlantic.
Our first night was spent absorbing the view and the ocean breeze from our room, with our patio door open and 2 glasses of Port!!! It was perfect!
In addition to these beautiful rooms, you'll be taken away by the comfort and tranquility of Lisas' garden!! She takes great pride in her landscaping skills and meticulously ensures that the flowers, the pool and every hidden corner are in tip top condition.
But aside from the stunning views, the accommodations, the amazing breakfast and the sparkling garden, it was LISA who was the highlight of our stay!
She a diamond in the rough! She has a great sense of humor, she is always willing to direct you to the bests places in the Algarve (attractions, restaurants, etc) and if you're willing to pass time with a little 'chit chat' in her garden, she is always willing to hang out with you and share stories, experiences and opinions!
A small note - The last night of our stay, my husband fell ill... we were stuck indoors and heard a knock at the door. There was Lisa with a HUGE bowl of homemade soup and goodies for us! Really, she's a sweetheart!!
It's really difficult to sum up our time at her place, but to make a long story short, if you're planning to stay in the quiet, quaint and very small town of Salema, you would be missing out by not staying at the Romantik Villa!! Google her website, check out the pictures and email her if you're unsure! Enjoy!!!
PS - If you are coming from Canada, she loves maple spread if you can bring it.

Le Mansarde Bed and Breakfast in Venice, Italy
I first read about this place in one of Rick Steve's guidebooks - Italy 2005. It was even better than he described!
Where to start-
First, it is located in a residential neighborhood, a couple blocks from the historic Jewish Ghetto (not a ghetto as Americans know it), and a very convenient ACTV bus stop. And an ATM right downstairs!
The local markets set up everyday right on the street below, so there are plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables, etc. daily.
Anna Maria, our hostess, was delightful! Very sweet! The first thing she did was sit us down, give us a map, and explain where to go to eat, sightsee, etc. She told us where the locals eat, so we appreciated that!
Our suite was impeccably clean and consisted of a small living area with sofa bed, a kitchenette (fully stocked with dishes, etc), private bathroom, and a loft with 2 twin beds. And, cleaned daily!
Anna Maria also made breakfast every day, consisting of fresh juice, fresh yogurts and fruits, and/or pasties. Coffee was provided so we made our own.
It was nice being more with the locals than the touristy section because that is what we like. Everything is close enough in Venice that it never took long to get anywhere.
I highly recommend this bed and breakfast!

Three winning Germany B&Bs
My husband and I just returned from a trip to Germany and had several great experiences.
Baden Baden, Deutscher Kaiser - listed in Rick's guidebook. Great location if you are looking to stay outside of the city (in order to avoid the church bells in the city center that begin at 6:15am). Get Frau Peter talking about how she met Rick Steves for entertainment. Plenty of parking right there.
Rothenburg, Pension Elke - We were running late arriving in Rothenburg, trying to make it to the 8pm Nightwatchman's tour, and had no place to stay yet. We parked just outside the city walls, passed Pension Elke on our way to the city center, rang the doorbell in the back (the grocery store was closed) and Klaus greeted us. He speedily (I don't think he operates any other way) showed us the available rooms, we chose one, and he gave us the key, said go on and hurry to catch the tour. We made it! Pension Elke was the cleanest (newly remodeled) place we stayed, and the location was wonderful. Do not be afraid of it's central location if you want quiet - Rothenburg is very quiet at night and early morning because so many of the tourists go away. Klaus directed us to a small free parking lot a very short distance away.
Rodgau (outside Frankfurt), Cats Rest - For our last night before flying home from Frankfurt, I made a reservation with Cats Rest based on what I had read here. We loved it, and wished we had more time there. There is just one room at Cats Rest because it is simply the upper floor of Karin Kohler's home. It is a huge studio-style room, with a sleeping area, two sitting areas, bookshelves, and tons of personal touches like coffee, tea, cookies, fruit, etc. The bathroom was spacious as well. It was such a switch from the small rooms you normally get other places. It was very warm during our trip, but this room had so many windows to open that the breeze was more than adequate. But if it hadn't been, she even had a small electric fan - I had been wishing for a fan all week! I will point out that the room has two twin beds, which we simply pushed together, and that Karin only accepts cash. There is an ATM within walking distance, and also an Italian restaurant that is open late and serves ice cream/gelato. I highly recommend Cats Rest as an alternative to staying in Frankfurt itself. It was an easy 30 minutes to the airport for us.

Ireland B & Bs
Just got back from two weeks in Ireland. We stayed in B&Bs throughout the country. Among the best were Ophira in the Dublin suburb of Dun Laoghaire, Harbour Hill Farm in Kinsale, and Milestone Inn in Dingle.
John and Cathy at Ophira were incredibly helpful. They even loaned us their laptop so that we could download a map when our GPS was on the fritz. And Dun Laoghaire was very convenient, only a 15 minute train trip into the city center.
Harbour Hill Farm in Kinsale was my wife's favorite. The views from our room were fantastic. Siobhan and Nigel made us feel at home.
Milestone was a great place to stay. Michael and Barbara were delightful hosts. At check in, Michael oriented us to Dingle and gave us all the info we needed. Thanks to him, we took in a great concert of traditional Irish music in a local church.
B&Bs are definitely the best way to see Ireland. You meet great local folks and keep your costs down.

Umbertide, Italy: El Marsam B&B
In May 2008), we spent 2 delightful nights at El Marsam B&B, a perfect place to wind down and savor the sights and tastes of Umbria. El Marsam is a 400-year-old farmhouse, on a hill overlooking the green hills around the small town of Umbertide. The rooms are beautifully decorated as well as comfortable, the breakfast (and dinner, which can be arranged by reservation) are leisurely and delicious, focusing on fresh ingredients and local cuisine. Umbertide is within easy driving distance of places of interest to tourists (less than an hour’s drive north of Assisi and 30 to 40 minutes west of Gubbio for example), and El Marsam’s location—in the midst of vineyards and olive orchards—is peaceful and relaxing. Our room had a lovely bathroom with frescoes and sculptures evoking an atmosphere of ancient Roman baths. During our stay we particularly enjoyed conversations with our delightful hosts, Ginda and Mike Simpson. Since we do not speak Italian, we had found limited opportunity during our trip for conversation with local residents. Our leisurely meals at El Marsam included stimulating discussions, and the Simpsons shared some insights gained from their experience as Americans living in Italy. On the practical side, they also had a good store of information (and printouts) for visiting places of interest in the area, as well as driving directions. Sometimes B&Bs can be a bit daunting, with a strict cut-off time for breakfast and little contact with the hosts. The gracious, friendly ambiance at El Marsam was exceptional. We hope to return for a longer stay, and highly recommend it. You can find out more about El Marsam on their website:

Aude Valley, Midi-Pyrenees, France
Tucked away in the gorgeous Malepère foothills of the Pyrenees in the Aude Valley near Limoux and Carcassonne, France, is a charming but simple B&B my hubbie & I were so lucky to have chosen. Surrounded by fields and vineyards it is especially enjoyable because of its delightful hostess, Simone who, along with her husband and sons, keeps a spotless estate. Eager to please her guests and learn their language, she sings and chatters away while she works in her kitchen, cooking with local, home-grown products. (i.e. veggies which were harvested from the fields just minutes before) Using her maps and local brochures, we enjoyed rural country roads, safe for hiking and biking, lovely villages nearby, the usual markets and a very pleasant climate for May travel. Milestone B&B
Some friends and I took a trip all through southern Ireland and were delighted by our B&B accommodations in Dingle.
The Milestone B&B was more than we could have expected. The rooms were nicely decorated and VERY clean. The breakfast was delicious, especially the rhubarb! The most exceptional part were the couple that who's home in which we were staying. Michael and Barbara were friendly, offering so many great tips for our Dingle experience. We went horse back riding (which was amazing) and on our way out, Barbara noticed our not too rugged jackets and let us borrow two of hers!
The couple went above and beyond, exceeding our expectations. When we return to Dingle for an extended stay, a must, we would stay no other place for the perfect experience than the Milestone!!

We stayed 2 nights at Boogaards Bed and Breakfast on Langestraat in Amsterdam, a 10 minute walk from the trainstation. The beautiful old dutch home has been lovingly restored and decorated by the owner, Peter Boogaard. He rents out 2 well appointed rooms which share a common living room. Free internet access, books, movies, drinks and snacks are all provided. He has thought of every detail. Peter loves to cook and prepares a wonderful breakfast every morning (Quiche, traditional dutch pannenkoeken etc.) Amsterdam can be quite expensive and at 100 euros a night, this place is a steal. One caveat, like many old dutch homes, there are steep, narrow steps leading up to the rooms, another incentive to pack light!

Not wanting to drive anywhere near Rome, I looked for a B&B which would offer secure parking and the ability to take the train into Rome. My find was Anne’s Place in Palestrina which is about a 30 minute train ride to Rome from the Zagarolo train station. Ann & David are the proprietors of this most accommodating B & B who provided a shuttle with their two Mercedes Benz vans not only to the train station but to the local restaurants in the area. The rooms were spacious, complete with their own facilities. On the first floor was a common area which included a nice sitting area complete with TV, DVD, VCR satellite dish, wet bar; and a laptop computer with broadband access.
Their advice about our safety and the necessity to leave one’s important documents/wallet & passport were right on. After getting our train tickets from Ann, on our second day into Rome we encountered approximately 200 plus people trying to get on a passenger train made for far less. Needless to say we were packed in like the proverbial sardine because the regular train had broken down & we found ourselves trying to make the Papal Audience on two small commuter cars. The next connection was on the subway which proved more of a challenge making it rather easy for pickpockets to remove anything left in an unguarded pants pocket, fanny pack or backpack. For those who want to see Rome without the traffic I strongly recommend a visit to Anne’s website: http://www.annes-place.net/ Oh, yes simply call them with the provided cell phone for a pick up at the Zagarolo train station. I have never encountered another B&B that has gone that far to help their guests have a great vacation.

Guest House Lida in Prague
I want to commend the proprietors of Guest House Lida in Prague. I stayed there for ten days in October 2007 and it was by far my most memorable B&B experience. Jan, Jiri and Jitka were extremely welcoming and helpful even before I arrived. Through emails they helped me make choices about my room and my travels. Jan met me at the train station and took me back to the airport at the end. My room was very large and comfortable and after traveling for 6 weeks, I finally had a bathtub for soaking instead of just showers. My concert tickets, bus pass and tour reservations were all done by Jan. This B&B is like having your own personal travel agent. I would recommend it to anyone traveling to Prague. There are two great restaurants in the neighbourhood with good food; you can walk to the subway; it is quiet; there is free internet and even English books to read. The Guest House Lida made my trip to Prague one to remember. If you want to see photos, go to their website and I also have some.

Einstern coffee in Berlin
Einstern in Berlin is located at Prenzlauer Allee 195 in the East part of the city. It is Einstern NOT Einstein. The place is small but very homey and welcoming. The dark wood and cozy seating arrangements make you want to stay and sip all day. I was in Berlin for three days last October and this was by far the friendliest service I received in that city besides my hotel (which was also excellent by the way, Holiday Inn City Center East at Prenslauer Allee 169).
At Einstern I was able to find an Americano and muffins, which were unavailable in my other travels. The young woman who made the coffee and served us was extremely friendly and helpful. Outside are cushions on benches with umbrellas and an awning. Even though it is on a busy street, you feel you are somewhere relaxing when you are in the shadow of Einstern.

La Locanda del Castello, San Giovanni d'Asso in southern Tuscany. Beautiful place with an amazing staff at a great price. Massimo the owner is charming and fun to chat with. Every morning the staff would have our breakfast table set with our lattes waiting. Knowing we like having 2 the other would be brought as soon as we were done. We will be back.

Italy - GREAT places to stay
Had a great time in Italy, in part due to the amazing places we stayed at:
Rome: Nicolas Inn. This place gets rave on Tripadvisor as we can attest that it's true. Very friendly, very helpful. Great restaurant tips. The map they gave us of the city was better than the map I bought in US. http://www.nicolasinn.com.
Sorrento: Il Nido is THE place to stay in the pricey Amalfi Coast. The family that runs it is so helpful in planning trips around the area. It made our stay so easy. Great onsight restaurant too! http://www.ilnido.it.

Terrific B&B! Jill, our host, was very helpful in planning our day. Her recommendations were "spot on". Very clean rooms. 10 minute walk to town. (If you are driving, bring a GPS or make sure you get step by step directions...A36 was closed into town.)

Lake Geneva B&B
Vevey, Switzerland B&B- We took the advice we read from another traveler on Rick's site and chose to stay in a B&B in Vevey on Lake Geneva rather than in Lausanne. It was a great experience! Getting to the B&B was an easy bus ride from the train station and the facitity and the hosts were very nice. They served a generous breakfast with home-made jams and jellies from their garden. The prices were the best we could find in the Lake Geneva area-do take the time to e-mail for a quote. We had a shared bath, but there are sinks in the rooms and since our family occupied 2 rooms, the bath was all ours. Our hosts gave us a personalized train schedule so we could easily do the chocolate and cheese tours using our Swiss Passes and they also recommended a great restaurant in Vevey that was such an improvement on the place we ventured into on our own the previous night. We highly recommend this B&B! http://www.bnb.ch/index.php?p=page&id=37

Rothenburg alternative
Gebsattel (~5km from Rothenburg, Germany)- Our family of 5 thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Gafthaus zum Lamm just outside of Rothenburg. Although this place is not for everyone, we found it comfortable, economical, and it was our kids favorite place to stay. It is located in a small farming village (we could tell by the smell)a short drive from Rothenburg (no train service). We climbed 4 flights of stairs for our top-floor loft with 5 beds, a small separate sitting area, and a small bath of our own. The price was 65 Euros a night for the 5 of us including a hearty breakfast. The owner speaks adequate English, the others, not much, but they were very kind and hospitable with my very sketchy German. I was nervous about staying at this place before we actually got there because the price was low and the email correspondences we had had to make our arrangements were answered sporadically. Upon our arrival we were very pleasantly surprised. I can not speak for the comfort of the smaller rooms. They looked clean, but a bit weathered, outdated and worn. http://gasthaus-lamm-gebsattel-rothenburg.de/lamm_frames_e.htm

Pension Elke
Pension Elke in Rothenburg - this was our favorite B&B on our two-week trip. Location was fantastic (over a grocery store - close to square), rooms were newly renovated and immaculate, and speedy Klaus was great! He insisted on making breakfast - even though we were leaving early for the airport and we didn't want to inconvenience him. He said, "It's my job."

La Tour de Cause (Dordogne region)
My husband and I just came back from France, where we stayed at La Tour de Cause in Pont-de-Cause (near Castlenaud - 15 minutes from Sarlat) in the Dordogne region (www.latourdecause.com). It was perfect and alone worth going to France. Caitlin and Albert (from CA) have transformed an old farm house into a perfectly appointed B&B with huge old-beamed rooms and US type bathrooms. Breakfast in their again perfect old French kitchen (with lots of coffee - nice for us addicts)is such fun we had to push ourselves out the door. They know tons about the area so just get yourself there and take their suggestions. If you really need to know what is going on outside this perfect part of the world, use the free internet. But go - it is a magical experience.

Le Mansarde
Our most memorable B&B in Italy was definitely Anna-Maria's "Le Mansarde" B&B in Venice. She gave more time, TLC and home-cooking than any other B&B host. When we arrived she spent time with us circling her favorite restaurants, churches and paths to the sights. Anna-Maria was enthusiastic about answering questions (in English), sharing personal insights as well as learning new English words (such as "smoothie" for one of the wonderful homemade creations she made us for breakfast). Her breakfast included the fruit smoothie (very yummy!), homemade yogurt with meringue cookie, fruit, homemade & heart-shaped breakfast bread and cappucino. She said breakfast is different every day depending on what is fresh at market. The room and bathroom were impecabbly clean and very recently renovated with beautiful tile and wood floor. Shutters close at night for a perfectly quiet and comfortable night's sleep. Location is conveniently located to sights. Anna-Maria made our stay in Venice extra special... Later I referred to her as my "Venice mother!" Not to worry if you like independence; she will respect that too and leave you in peace as needed. She - and her B&B- are a hidden Venice treasure!!! Il Colle degli Ulivi B&B in Rome
My wife and I just spent nine nights at this B&B 30 minutes by train outside of Rome (Zagarolo). The owners, Ivano and Terhi, offer a self-contained cottage and three new en-suite rooms at very reasonable rates. They will drop-off/pick-up guests at the train station, so a rental car is unnecessary. They also offer tours, customized to the guests' interests, which were fantastic. Best of all, they epitomize the 'Back Door' philosophy and encourage guests to visit local towns (besides Rome) which are rich in history and culture. Ivano & Terhi are two of the nicest people you will ever meet in your travels.

Eating & Sleeping in the UK (on a budget...)
Balmoral Guesthouse in Edinburgh, Scotland is a MUST! Inexpensive, cozy and quite friendly. Great breakfasts, too. Minutes from the hustle and bustle of Edinburgh. Give the Gurkha Brigade restaurant on Leith Walk, just a few blocks from the house, a try. It's fabulous!
Manor House in Oxford, England is adorable with huge rooms and the largest bathrooms I've ever seen in Europe! We ended up at Manor House after a terrifying b&b didn't work out. They don't appear to be on the web, but can be contacted at 01865 727627. The bus runs right in front of the house, and for less than two pounds, you can ride the 5 minute trip to the center of Oxford. When you get to the center, make sure to eat at Chutneys Indian Brasserie, just off Queen Street. You won't be disappointed!
Also, my husband and I have become huge fans of eating a picnic meal from the grocery. The prepared salads, wraps, sandwiches are so fresh and cheaper than grabbing something from the coffee shop next door. And don't forget to sample the yogurts. Why can't we get yogurts like that in the states?!

Cartref House - London
My daughter & I just spent 3 days in Cartref House on Ebury St., Belgravia, London, a delightfully pleasant B&B not in Rick's 2008 guide (but it should be!). We left in a hurry to catch a flight and I left behind my very expensive dental mouth guard. When we got home I found an email from Derek James, our host, saying that he found a "brace" that he was posting to our home in a Jiffy bag. Having stayed in chain hotels for most of my travels I was astonished by Derek's thoughtfulness. I would highly recommend Cartref to travellers wishing clean pleasant lodgings on a quiet street just a few blocks from Victoria Station.

cherry court hotel, london
I stayed in the Cherry Court Hotel in London last week, my second time staying there. I am a big fan of the place. The owners,Mr and Mrs Patel are both very nice, professional and helpful. The hotel itself is clean and cheerful, the rooms are cozy and have everything you need to be comfortable. Ok, if you want a big bathroom and bedroom it is not for you. But the water is nice and hot, and the shower's water pressure is great. If you want a safe and convenient place to stay that is reasonably priced, I challenge you to find better than this. To me, a large room is not worth paying for when I spend most of my time out and about. And by the way, I have stayed in two different rooms here, and the beds in both were the most comfortable I have EVER had in a hotel or B and B. Yes,I do mean ever, and I have travelled a fair bit. I have a bad back and so I am always wary of beds being too soft or lumpy. These beds were nice and very firm, but not too hard. For a person with a bad back this is like finding gold dust. Also the neighborhood is quiet, and the room temperature was good. I will go back to the Cherry Court every time I go back to London, and I have told my friends in the UK about it as well.

We stayed at the #34 Bed and Breakfast in York, UK the last weekend of March, 2008. Jason and Amy were friendly and honest, and a joy to be around. They gave us great suggestions on pubs and Indian food as well as telling us how to get to the cathedral and train station with patience and kindness. The room was comfortable, cozy, and clean. The bed in our room was actually large. The generous breakfast were delicious and served in a bright, cheery atmosphere.Jason and Amy run an ecofriendly B&B on quiet street close to the major sites and train station. B&B Corte Compana, Venice, Italy
B&B Corte Compana, Venice, Italy is the best overall B&B we've visited in the past 15 years. We've lived in England and Germany and have traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia and the U.S.A. staying whenever possible in B&B's and small "pension" hotels in order to get to know locals better and to sample local hospitality. This B&B and it's owner, Riccardo, is the most welcoming, hospitable and comforting we've been to in many years. We stared 7 nights and will most certainly return in the future. The rooms were very large even by U.S. hotel standards. Beds were very comfortable, bathrooms extremely clean and of very good size. Showers were always hot. Breakfasts of yogurt, fresh rolls, pastry, fruit, butter, jam, cheese and wonderful coffee were delightful and more than enough to start the day. There is a separate breakfast table for guests of each of the three bedrooms yet the atmosphere is cosy and inviting which encourages conversations among guests which is great for sharing daily experiences and swapping travel tips. Riccardo the owner is an Italian National Treasure! He is fluent in English and without doubt one of the most welcoming and helpful B&B hosts we have met in over 40 years of travel. He grew up in this house and loves Venice, whose restaurants, shops and people he knows intimately. He is extremely honest and caring in providing helpful hints on places to visit, shop and eat. When our plane was a bit late in arriving at Marco Polo he met us at the boat dock and helped us with baggage to and up the stairs into the B&B. He provided invaluable insights into the most efficient and cost-effective ways to enjoy his beloved Venice. Riccardo's rates are extremely reasonable and the B&B's location withing 300 meters of San Marco Square is the most ideal location imaginable. Hotels in this area are vastly more expensive than this B&B. In summary, Riccardo's B&B is a jewel. We, our friends and extended family will return again without question. Our first trip to Scotland and how elated we were to find John & Liz of Ardconnel House so warm and inviting, and their home so beautifully decorated and spotless! Our only disappointment was that we couldn't stay longer as there is SO much to do in Inverness and the surrounding area! Ardconnel House is steps away from the shopping/historic district, yet quiet for a good night's sleep. Took the Over the Sea to Skye tour (FANTASTIC!!) and John and Liz made sure our arrangements were confirmed and directed us, clearly, to the check-in office. John's dinner recommendations proved right on and we had a memorable meal at Girvan's! We rented an apartment in Budapest from an organization called Intee's Inn (www.hostel.fw.hu). They are a group of young people, whoa re renting out rooms/apartments in different price ranges. We payed not much for our apartment and it was very central, just off the main square of the city where the 3 metros are meeting.
The guy who picked us up at the airport by car and brought us to the flat was extremely nice he told us stories in the car and gave us already some recommendations. Then another guy waited us at the apartment and he sat down with us and spent an hour telling us where to go and where not to go, he bokoed us tables in some restaurants and also he bought us tikcets for a show in the Opera. He made us tea while we had this talk.
We were amazed by how nice they were and we hardly had anything like that on the other parts of our trip...

Having returned yesterday from a marvelous visit to Normandie, I wanted to take the time to recommend a B&B that I stayed in for three nights/four days in Balleroy, France. Run by Margaret Stephenson and found on-line at www.nighty-night.net, the B&B is a 200 year old village home that has been beautifully restored. The lodging was quaint, reasonably priced, and operated by english speaking Margaret. The rooms come with en-suite baths and are beautifically decorated. The included morning breakfast offers fresh pastries, and numerous other delectable selections. Balleroy is centrally located to the Normandie beaches and close to Bayeaux. Margaret limits occupancy which allows for a more relaxed visit. We returned each evening to a beautiful fireplace and an honor bar. My future visits to this area will definitely include a reservation at this B&B.

We stayed at this great B&B in Amsterdam. The owners were unbelievably helpful in working with my fiance and I in coordinating our wedding photos at Keukenhoff. They answered questions and made recommendations. The price was unbelievable as well: 85 Euro/night for a small studio apartment (king size bed, small kitchen, and private bath). A delicious breakfast was included each morning and delivered right to our room. It's located in the center of the city and convenient to all the major sites. I couldn't speak more highly of it. B and B Brugge, Belgium
Hotel Boterhuis, Brugge, Belgium: We just returned from a lovely stay at this hotel in Brugge, Belgium. We found it by accident when we drove into town at 8:30 at night with no place to stay. Walked into the Reception and met Annie and she showed us 2 rooms, a quad and a double. The quad was at the top of a winding wood staircase, 500 years old. The room was large with large wooden beams exposed and a loft for our kids. They loved it! Large bathroom with claw foot tub. Tea and coffee service with water heater in room. I didn't sleep very well due to the car noise driving by on the cobble stone streets and the doves perched on the roof, calling in the early morning, but this just added to the character of the place. The breakfast was very nice too, with fresh eggs provided. Very short walk to the Market square and restaurants close by too..which is important when you have tired, hungry kids along!! A parking garage just around the corner was convenient. Bruge is a very unique European town in and of itself. It was on the expensive side for us Americans with the Euro rate so poor, but I think it was worth it! website: www.boterhuis.be

B&B in Bouillon, Belgium
Just returned from southern Belgium. We loved Bouillon, a small town on the French border with a huge castle to explore and an extensive network of footpaths (unfortunately it was too cold to hike when we were there). We stayed at Belle Vue Chambres d'Hotes. The location was great, with an amazing view of the town and castle. Madame was warm and welcoming and the breakfast very nice. Highly recommended. Only caveat is that if you have mobility issues, you probably will need a car in Bouillon, because the town straddles the ravine through which the Semois River flows. We reached the B&B by climbing a set of steep stone steps (hence the great view). But it is also easily reachable by road. Website is http://www.ardenne.org/belle-vue/indexen.htm and you can book by e-mail, chambre.bellevue@skynet.be.

Wonderful B&B/Farm near Florence
We stayed at a wonderful farmhouse just outside of Florence - www.il-poggiolo.it/index_en.html. Graziella picked us up at the train station when we arrived and made sure we had all of the information that we needed for our activities each day while serving us a nice breakfast. It was so peaceful and beautiful and her animals were so friendly and sweet - my kids were in heaven. In most cases, if you can book directly with the owners rather than going through the agency, you will get a much better price. We booked directly through her and received a great deal - so be sure to contact her directly.

Orvieto B & B
My family of five just returned from 2 weeks in Italy. I would like to let people know about Orvieto, and the apartment we rented for 5 nights. It was wonderful- immaculate, beautiful views of the Umbrian countryside, with a charming hostess, Sabrina.
The apartment was spacious and well-located in the town of Orvieto. It could comfortably sleep 6, and had the convenience of a washing machine.
The town itself is a great home base to discover Umbria, and it's even convenient to go into Rome if you don't want to base yourself in the city (it's one hour by direct train). Orvieto itself is worth a few days to see the Duomo, Etruscan ruins, and just to meander through the streets.
Sabrina is a delightful host. She provided plentiful food for breakfast, and even baked us 2 delicious desserts (tiramisu and an apricot tart). She lives across the alley, and is most helpful in whatever way you might want. Check out the website: www.webalice.it/ripamedici

Nicolas Inn B&B in Rome
We just returned from a two-week trip to Italy and would like to add to the glowing comments about the Nicolas Inn in Rome. Francois and Melissa (from Chicago) did everything in their power to ensure we had a wonderful stay. We took my in-laws along on this trip (both around 80 years old), so we tried to make it as easy as possible on them. Francois and Melissa arranged for a cab to pick us up at the airport and were waiting to assist us with our bags upon our arrival. The location is perfect - an easy walk to the Colosseum, Forum, Palatine Hill, Trevi Fountain, etc. There is an internet cafe right around the corner, which also has phone booths offering calls to the U.S. for 15 cents (euro) per minute - no calling card necessary. Melissa made reservations at the Borghese Gallery and called cabs for us on several occasions. As a result, we were able to spare my in-laws the "experience" of the Roman metro. Their restaurant picks were spot-on...their recommendation for a restaurant near the Pantheon resulted in one of our favorite meals of the entire trip. The Inn's rooms are comfortable and extremely clean....as well as an excellent value in expensive Rome. I would recommend, if you are sensitive to noise, to ask for a room facing the courtyard rather than the street. On the other hand, my wife and I stayed in a room facing the street and enjoyed watching Roman streetlife. The double-paned windows do an excellent job of reducing the noise.
As far as heroic B&B friendliness, Francois and Melissa came to the rescue when my father-in-law fell out of bed one night and cut himself. They rushed to get band-aids and hovered over him until we were all certain he was O.K. When the unfortunate time came to leave, I made the easy walk to Termini to pick up our rental car. When I returned, Francois was waiting by the street with the other three and our bags and offered a warm send-off. Without a doubt, we'll stay here again if we are lucky enough to return to Rome. This is the place to stay in Rome if hopsitality, location, and value are important to you.

Casa Quireza
We just returned from a trip to Spain where we were fortunate enough to stay a night at Casa Quireza in Pontevedra. What a great way to see the region of Galicia! The hosts, Chris and Margaret, were so welcoming and helpful and what a wonderful gourmet meal they served for dinner. They arranged a tour of a local winery for us and the personal tour of the lovely village given by Chris was certainly one of our best memories of our Spain trip. Our only regret was that we stayed only one night!

Ireland B&Bs
Spent two weeks in Ireland. Here's where we stayed:
Trim: The White Lodge-Host is a retired police detective. He wasn't too chatty but the rooms & breakfast were decent.
Cashel: Ashmore House-Up a narrow side street, a comfortable hike from the Rock. Hosts quite friendly. Lower house feels a bit 'dainty' but bedrooms are nice.
Dingle: The Milestone House-Every gushing comment is well deserved by Barbara & Michael. Our favorite stay & breakfast of the whole trip. I could eat nothing but Michael's bread & jam everyday & be in heaven. Barbara sits down with you right away and pours out helpful tips.
Doolin: Daly's House. Turn right at O'Connor's Pub, go up and around the curve-they're the end two houses. (Our room had an enormous bathroom.) Definately try Susan's delicious hot chocolate for breakfast.
Portrush: Anvershiel House feels just a bit 'tired' and you have to give your breakfast order the night before but the host is friendly and interested in your travel.
Belfast: The George is close enough to walk to the action, far enough to be quiet. The only place on our trip not run by Irish but the host was quite nice.
Dublin: The Charles Stewart seems huge after most B&Bs. Less than two blocks from the airport Airlink bus stop. Longest breakfast time (3hr window) and a luggage room if you're early or leaving after check-out. Away from the noise of Temple Bar but comfortable walking distance to just about everything.

Casa Santo Estevo, Galicia, Spain
I wanted to remind folks that are planning a visit to Galicia, Spain to stay at Casa Santo Estevo. Run by a Dutch/English couple there knowledge of the area is second to none. In fact it goes beyond the area and seems to extened to all of Galicia.
Galicia is not the typical southern spanish destination. It is greener and has no morish influences. It is a Celtic land, so they say.

B&B Close to Belfast, N Ireland
In late March, 2008, we stayed at Hargreave’s House, a lovely bed and breakfast in Bangor, N Ireland, just east of Belfast. We had daily business in Belfast for a little over a week, and we found it to be a very easy and relaxing commute between the train terminal in Bangor and the Central station in Belfast. Bangor is a cozy seaside community with plenty of options for dining and plenty of pubs for sociability. It was a great way to do business in the big city and spend the morning and evenings in a small town setting. Even with a week’s pass on the commuter train plus the B&B fee, the overall cost was still less than staying in one of the downtown hotels.
The proprietor, Pauline Mendez, exceeded expectations every single day. She made it a point to assess our needs and interests, accommodated a variable schedule for breakfast, gave us great tips on sights to see, helped us with timetables and travel arrangements, and went out of her way to arrange an impromptu tour of a local farm. Each day she made a special effort to adjust the breakfast to suit each member of our family of five. Upon entering the dining room, it was wonderful to greet each new day, and the variable weather, by taking in the view through the bay window that looks out over Bangor Bay and listening to the crackle of the cozy fireplace.

Casa Flavia, Orvieto, Italy
My week in Orvieto and Casa Flavia was the culmination of a one-month visit to Italy. I could not have chosen a better place to stay. The apartment is immaculate, bright and cheerful. The location is perfect and right upstairs from a wonderful bakery where the smell of fresh bread and sweets add to the ambiance of this perfect vacation apartment.
The terrace is picture-perfect ~ quiet, roomy, and surrounded by beautiful trees, flowers and other greenery.
Orvieto is a town well-worth staying in for at least a week if not more. There are many shops and restaurants, and the Duomo and main piazza are dazzling. The location in Umbria is ideal for day trips to neighboring villages, but Orvieto itself provides all one might want if your desire is to really experience Italy.
Saving the best for last, I will tell you that you could not find better hosts than Mauro and Roberta. Dependable, sweet, caring and fun, this young couple has won my heart. We spent time with them exploring town; they were an integral part of making my last week in Italy one that I will never forget.
I would highly recommend Casa Flavia as the perfect place to spend a vacation in Italy.

Venice's Corte Campana B&B run by Riccardo
Venice's Corte Campana B&B run by Riccardo
After experiencing a fourteen day Italian vacation in five different major cities with my husband, Venice was by far the best especially due to our stay at Riccardo's Corte Campana B&B. Riccardo went above and beyond our expectations and his job description. Picking us up and bringing us to his B&B, allowing us to call him any time, perfectly recommending places to eat, shop, and stroll, genuinely cares and converses with all of his guests about their daily travels, serves a fulfilling and quality breakfast, and much more are just a few of the ways Riccardo went above and beyond the call of his duty. After three lovely nights at his cozy, comfortable, clean, and conveniently located B&B, it became clear to us why his name is Riccardo:
R- Ridiculously helpful in every way I- Incredibly Intelligent about Venice C- Cares about his guests C- Charismatic & cool personality A- Amazing & awesome breakfast R- Runs the best priced B&B ever D- Does what he can to make you happy O- Outstanding stay, service, & person
What more could you ask for from a B&B! Not only did my husband and I have an amazing and awesome experience in Venice, especially because of our stay at the Corte Campana B&B, but we left making a new friend with Riccardo!

La Ducrie - D'Arthenay France
For anyone traveling in Normandy: My husband and I stayed at La Ducrie, a 600 year old Norman castle (with moat and black swans) just outside of the village of D'Arthenay about 10 miles north of St Lo. It was one of the major highlights of our 17 day stay in France. We can't say enough good things about the castle or the owners, Joe and Vivienne Helling. They are warm and funny and friendly and full of historical and revelant information about the area. It is very reasonably priced and worth every Euro! Vivienne is a superb cook - take advantage of her 6 course evening dinner. My taste buds - and stomach - thought I had died and gone to foodie heaven. It feels like visiting dear friends who just happen to live in the most amazing "home" you will ever experience. We hope to return there on our next trip to Europe - it is too good to be missed.

Wonderful B&B outside Arles (Provence)
As Americans living in Amsterdam for the last 5 years we have done A LOT of traveling around Europe. We just returned from 2 weeks in southern France and, based on an earlier recommendation on this board, stayed in Provence at Mas du Petit Grava outside of Arles. We just got back from a trip to London and Edinburgh and stayed at the most wonderful B&B in Edinburgh-- AONACH MOR. They also have a wonderful room which we stayed in with a four poster jacobean bed and steam room. Lovely when it is a cold and rainy day in Edinburgh. When I go back I will stay with them again--but note: They are going to be moving their B&B to a new site in June 2008-- to 23 Mayfield(just down the road in Edinburgh). b&b Dolce Toscana Maremma Region Tuscany
My husband and I were longing to discover Tuscany after all it has been said and written about it, but wanted to stay away from the beaten path. Therefore we chose a B&B in the country side of the Maremma region, south of Lucca, close enough to the sea and the historical sights of Volterra,San Giminiano and the wine country of Bolgari, since we are wine lovers. We contacted many places but Dolce-Toscana was the first one to answer and help us with booking a car and a sommelier for wine tours. We do not regret our choice. Being there was a wonderful experience and we end up staying longer that we originally intended. The hostess bent over backward to help us with organizing our daily tours and in the evening she awaited for us with a glass of wine and wonderful company to share the magnificent sunsets over endless rolling hills draped in winiards, that one can see from the terrace. The place is clean and bright and the bathrooms are spacious. John (my husband) and I, highly recommend it. Here is the link:

The Best B&B in Orvieto!
We just came back from Italy and wanted to tell you about the great apartment/B&B that we stayed at in Orvieto. The place is called B&B Ripa Medici, and is run by a wonderful woman named Sabrina. This is the website for the B&B: http://www.webalice.it/ripamedici
It's a glorious 2 bedroom apartment with 2 full bathrooms off of each bedroom. Once bathroom even has a washer. The bedrooms are bright and airy - each with the most spectacular view of the Umbrian countryside that I have ever seen in my life!
The living room has 2 small tables, which we used to eat lunch from a local grocery store, drink wine, and eat breakfast the next day. A breakfast of fresh baked cakes from Sabrina's own kitchen! The living room also has one of those incredible views of the countryside as well.
The kitchen is well equiped with all the things you need to make a nice lunch or dinner - or just a coffee.
The apartment is located right down the street from Sabrina's own home, and when she is able, she may offer to take you or pick you up from the train station below. It is right in the middle of town, and just a 2 minute walk to the main street, where all the locals are walking around.
Sabrina's prices are very reasonable, as stated on her website - we rented the entire apartment for only 90 Euros in February. I assume that the prices are higher in the summer, but it is still a great budget deal!

I just returned from an 8 night stay at Anne's Place B&B in Rome. I was traveling with my sister who came down with the flu one day during our trip. The inn keeper, Anne, made a little bed for my sister in the living room and gave her tea, soup and a sandwich while I was sight-seeing in Rome. B&B Les Charmes de Carlucet, near Sarlat, Dordogne.
Having enjoyed 2 weeks touring around France, it was time to thinking of leaving the Languedoc area and start the journey back to the UK. The problem was the weather was mild and I fancied a last taste of SW France. Having heard so much of the Dordogne and Sarlat, i decided home could wait another day or so! One or two recommendations in ricks book were booked up so i reserved a B&B called Les Charmes de Carlucet close to Sarlat which had good reviews on the net. Great find, clean big bedrooms with decent size beds, breakfast simply one of the best I've had in means of quality, choice, and size! I liked having free internet wireless access as i could keep in touch with home on my laptop. The hosts were good too, him French her British, so communication was easy and at breakfast if you asked, they booked up tours, gave you the local knowledge, the nice finds for restaurants, and they are very charming. They provide a guest fridge in the beautiful stone built pool house, so one day we had a lovely lunch in the grounds with the goodies we had bought during the Sarlat market....a must do!
We stayed four nights, too short a stay for this most amazing area, a week is probably required. I hope Rick's team check this B&B out too for future editions, they have a website though the real thing looks even better: http://www.carlucet.com/

B&B Pascucci in Rome was simply amazing! Our friend, Lucianno, was the perfect Roman host. He offers a wonderful, spacious antique-filled room with a comfy bed in his private residence. Great B&B in Rome - Italy
Max and Lavinia - Le Finestre sul Vaticano B&B owners - will welcome you warmly, provide a beautifully clean and comfortable room; wonderful breakfast and great tips on walking tours and highlights in Rome. I had some special dietary needs and they provided beautifully for them with no fuss. This very nice B&B is in a very convenient location just 5 minutes from subway station and 10 from Vatican Museums and Saint Peter Basilica. Parking off street in the back. Max and Lavinia are so friendly, gracious, and very helpful, with recommendations about places to visit in the area, places to eat, and loads of local history. But most of all, on more than one occasion, they sat down with us and visited — for hours. We not only learned about an incredible Rome amd its special places, but we learned more about the city, the country and about this very special couple. We found Le Finestre sul Vaticano B&B very enjoyable, warm and cozy atmosphere keeps guests coming back for repeat visits. This is truly more than simply a place to stay. We used the B&B recommendation from Rick's Florence book & stayed at the Residenza ll Villino over New Year's 2008. Hosts Sergio & Elisabth were the most gracious hosts ever. The room for four of us (husband, me, two sons) was spacious, clean, reasonably priced, and had a drink-stocked refrigerator. The breakfasts were excellent too. Great location near all the sights. Would definitely stay there again!

Poland
A great B&B in Boleslawiec, Slaski, Poland is The Blue Beetroot. The owners, John and Barbara are a retired British couple who have renovated a horse stable into a wonderful get away. For 36 Euros I had dinner, drinks, and breakfast. The room was a suite that I shared with 3 other women. We had or own bath and toilet, plus shower room and sitting room. We prescheduled manicures, pedicures, facials and massages. I am taking my husband back in May and John is going to arrange fly fishing and biking for him. Great food, great atmosphere and excellent food. The website is www.bluebeetroot.com

Superior B&B service in London!
The Garden Court Hotel in Kensington Gardens Square, London, as you know, comes highly recommended in the Rick Steves travel guides. All I can say is WOW regarding their hospitality, cleanliness, and superior service during our week's stay in January 2008. I'd originally reserved a twin with shared bath. Our second day in London when we returned from site-seeing, the manager told us he was planning to upgrade us to an ensuite due to space availability (this is mid-January and not too many tourists) at no additional cost! Then, the evening before our 9AM flight home, I went to the front desk to pay my balance as the office would be not be open by the time we left in the morning. Not only did the woman at the desk arrange for a taxi to Paddington Station, but she packed a fantastic assortment of juice, cheeses, apples, bananas, yogurt, chocolate, and breakfast bars to get us through the morning, as we would obviously miss out on the Garden Court's generous breakfast. While I realize there are other fine B&Bs in London, please folks, don't hesitate to consider the Garden Court Hotel! I plan to e-mail the owner to thank him personally and acknowledge the front desk's superior service.

Ancienne Boulangerie outside Carcassone
At the Ancienne Boulangerie in Caunes Minervois, France (outside Carcassonne) we had a great experience! Only 60euros a night. We were greeted with beer, wine, tea, and coffee when we arrived by Garreth, the Irishman who owns the place. He gave us recommendations for a place to eat (on a Sunday night) and steered us away from bad choices. He was a veritable tour guide for the region. For breakfast we were served, among other things, the best croissant I have ever had (and I live in France)! Then, he invited my boyfriend and I to stay with him in Ireland during the offseason from the B&B. We are going to see him in 3 weeks! I don't know if he offers this to all his travelers, but he is still one of the nicest, friendliest, most helpful men I have ever met.

Bed and Breakfast in Rome
Bed and Breakfast in Rome
My wife and I return from a week in Rome and we want to write our experience about a very beautiful bed and breakfast in Rome, 'The b&b Gianicolo's Home'.
We stay in this lovely family home and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves in Roma, and particularly the walk down the Gianicolo hill to the Vatican. I think many people would enjoy knowing about this walk.
The room was very lovely and big with a lovely balcony with a wonderful view.
we really enjoy and relax our self in Rome. For more information visit the website: www.gianicolo-bb.it

Websters B&B Salisbury, UK
We spent two nights with John and Veronica and enjoyed wonderful accommodations. Their home was our home. A hearty breakfast was served in pleasant surroundings and John was eager to provide good advice allowing us to make the most of our time. When we departed, John insisted on driving all our luggage and as many of our party as his vehicle would allow to the train station. As our train was minutes from departure, John returned to reunite me with my wallet which I had left behind in our room. He was a true hero. We will definitely return to their home on our next trip.

Hillview Cottage B&B in Stirling Scotland
Our tour of scotland was a celebration of my husband Bill's retirement. We loveed every day, meeting friendly and helpful people in B&Bs, buses, in pubs and even on the sidewalk. Our favourite B&B was Hillview Cottage run by Jon Darby. An interesting helpful host who could not do enough for us. An excentric man who lives in a large comfortable house with well behaved children and a couple of mini weiner dogs!! Stay here if you can get a booking...we booked in january for August. They have a large table in a cavernous lounge where guests sit and have breakfast, and it all has a really friendly feel to it. We hope to go back next year:-)

Salzkammergut, Austria
David and Angie (British expats) took us in at the Rosenhof on short notice and made us feel right at home. Situated in Ebensee (on the lake) Rosenhof is in close proximity to several ski areas (Fuererkogel, Dachstein West etc.) the spa at Bad Ichl, Hallstatt. Perfect operating base for all the Salzkammergut has to offer.
House and rooms were impeccable, soft beds, ensuite bathrooms, breakfast included was first rate. You can also order homecooked dinner served in their dining room or eat out in town. David and Angie always accessible and willing to go the extra mile with sightseeing tips, skiing recommendations, special requests. Especially enjoyed sitting by the fire in the lounge trading stories with David and other guests after long day of skiing. Very warm and freindly place for English speakers!

Strathgorm House
My family stayed in the town of Breakish on the Isle of Skye at Strathgorm House for two days in late Nov 2007. Host Alison Graham has a lovely home which is located just a few miles over the Skye Bridge and a great location for exploring the Isle. She was very friendly and provided a delicious breakfast at a great price. I would highly recommend staying here. strathgorm@tiscali.co.uk

Corte Campana, Venice, Italy
Corte Campana, Venice, Italy: This B&B is everything we saw in the posts and even more. We travelled from our home in Argentina, after making all arrangements online - all with great ease and comfort because of Riccardo's prompt and informative replies. On arrival, Riccardo was waiting despite the late hour. Throughout our stay, his suggestions and recommendations went beyond the usual tourist attractions. We felt he was like an old friend who knew our tastes and could point us in the right direction whether for restaurants, sights, shopping, or whatever. The B&B is quiet, well-kept, extremely comfortable, in the best location imaginable and we are already making plans to stay there again this year - in fact, we wouldn't dream of staying anywhere else, or with any other host. Riccardo is the best!

Residenza Arco dei Tolomei
Residenza Arco dei Tolomei in Trastevere, Rome is a gem of a bed and breakfast. The gracious owners, Marco and Gianna, go out of their way to make you feel like a welcomed guest in their home. From the initial contact to the goodbye wave from their window, they provide you with supportive advice, lovely accomodations, and warm conversation. Their staff prepares an excellent breakfast each morning, supports you in your day's planning, and maintains rooms to the highest of standards. The neighborhood of Trastavere is charming, close to attractions, and above all, safe.A stay at Residenza Arco dei Tolomei will make you feel like you are a part of Rome, rather than a tourist passing through briefly. It will stay in your heart long after you leave, anticipating your return to this special place.

B&Bs in Bacharach, Freiburg, Munich, Rothenburg and Brugge (Bruges)
Just returned from a 2 week trip over Christmas and New Year's to parts of Germany and Belgium. Thanks to Rick's guidebooks and the advice on this board, we had a great trip. Below is a list of the places we stayed, with comments:
Pension Winzerhaus, Bacharach: Unbelievably friendly hosts Sybille (?) and Stefan, both able English speakers, run a modest b&b close to the heart of the small but unforgettably charming town of Bacharach. Highly recommended.
Hotel am Stadtgarten, Freiburg: Loved Freiburg, but hated this hotel. Overpriced.
Pension Lindner, Munich: GREAT LOCATION. That is the best thing about this pension.
Pension Fuchsmuehle, Rothenburg: Absolutely amazing accomodations in a beautifully renovated mill. Owner Alex is friendly and accomodating (he let me do laundry for free!) The location is on the outskirts of Rothenburg, but there is a 5-10 minute walking path that leads to the city as well as car access. It is a little hard to find at first, but it is well worth the wait. The breakfast was excellent. Highly recommended.
Double Door B&B, Brugge, Belgium: Owners Pierre and Junko are incredible! They go above and beyond to make your stay enjoyable! On New Year's Eve, we were looking for a place to have a few drinks and they made some suggestions and eventually joined us at a local bar. We celebrated the New Year with Junko and Pierre in the beautiful Market Square of Brugge! The accomodations are well-appointed and the breakfast was excellent. Great value for outstanding accomodations and hospitality! www.doubledoor.be

B&B Mittersill, Austria
Kl. Ummerstall (http://www.kleinummerstall.at/) is a very friendly B&B in Mittersill. The hostess speaks english well and is very nice. We rented the apartment which worked very well for two adults, three teens, and a small dog. The apartment was clean and well furnished. The breakfast was always nice and a hearty start to the day. Mittersill is a skier's paradise. I believe Summer would be nice as well. Definitely recommended.

B&B near Tours
We recently returned from a month in France. At the beginning of our trip we had the pleasure of staying at a charming Bed and Breakfast near Tours. The four nights we spent at the Chateau de la Villaine were absolutely wonderful. Our hosts, Joke and Adrian did everything possible to make or stay pleasurable, and Joke’s gourmet cooking set a standard that was hard to equal. If we return to the Loire Valley in France we will plan to stay again at the Chateau de la Villaine.
