Heroic B&B Friendliness: 2009
European bed and breakfast hosts and hostesses are notorious for confounding travelers with inexplicable kindness. Share tales of B&B hosts who went above and beyond the call of touristic duty to give you a great trip.
Note: This board is for tips about great European B&Bs (not hotels). If there are multiple comments on the same place, we will delete repetitious posts. Comments about more traditional hotels should be posted in the appropriate Rick Steves guidebook forum. For specific lodging recommendations, please refer to Rick's guidebooks, and read his tips on planning your trip.
If you have a complaint about a B&B in one of Rick's books that you could not resolve with the management, we would like to hear about it; however, please do not express your misgivings here. Instead, feel free to comment in the appropriate Rick Steves guidebook forum.

Dun Laoghaire, Ireland Ophira B&B 10 Corrig Avenue, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, Ireland.
We (family of 4, 2 parents and 2 boys 13 and 17) stayed with John and Cathy for two separate 2-night stays when we visited Ireland in May 2009. First, the B&B is located in a very quiet neighborhood very close to everything downtown. Nothing is more than a 15 minute walk away, including the train station. Second, the building itself has so much charm, especially with all of the old wood working and the wonderful furniture and the family pictures on the walls. We stayed in the family suite, with 3 beds. All of us were happy with the comfort of the beds and the room. Oh, and the shower was one of the nicest we had in Europe, with a new instant on hot water heater in the shower. No bath tub but that was OK with us. The breakfast each morning was wonderful with a nice coffee and juice bar and John or Cathy taking our orders for eggs (cooked your way), bacon, sausage and there was a nice pastry to go with it. Also, there was plenty of fruit and cereal. We so enjoyed the bacon, that we now get Irish bacon from our local Whole Foods and won't eat the other kind at all.
Another nice thing was the amount of maps and guide books that were available in the guest living room library. We found this very helpful. John is a wealth of information on how to get places and things to do.
John found out we had an 9:30 flight and got up early so we had a breakfast and check out by 6:30 and gave us good directions to get back to the airport on time. It really made our day much easier and our flight home smoother!
We plan to go back to Ireland soon and will definitely be staying at Ophira again.

Casa Santo Estevo, Galicia, Spain
Whilst planning a trip to Northern Spain I read through some of the suggestions here. I have to admit I did stay mainly in Paraders. However out of the B&Bs I choose to stay at the one in Galicia is the best. Casa Santo Estevo run by a Dutch - English couple. I was made to feel at home and as said before what they do not know about the area is not worth knowing. The food was fantastic along with an open fire the relaxing atmosphere during the evening was a.great way to slow down after a day full of activity. More can be found at http://www.ribeirasacra.com

Great B&B in Bruges
We stayed three nights during the Christmas holidays in a fabulous B&B in Bruges-The Royal Stewart B&B. The owner Maggie is Scottish and couldn't have been more friendly or accommodating. We arrived to a warm greeting and a glass of wine. She then helped us carry our lugguage up the three flights of stairs! Our room was spacious, clean and very warm and welcoming. It was only about a five minute walk into town. Maggie went above and beyond for my daughter and me...she even left us her own coats for us to wear when she saw that ours might not be warm enough! We can't wait to return in the summer.

Orchid Corner - B&B in Meta di Sorrento
Our stay (4 women) at this B&B was truly memorable. Carmela and Antonino were gracious hosts. Loved the rooms and her cactus garden..very quaint. The place was a 2 min walk to the bus stop which has a fabulous view of the bay. The bus took us to the town of Sorrento which was a ~10 min ride..very convenient. For ~EU25/person, they fixed us a delicious dinner from appetizers to dessert including limoncello and frangello...homemade! The only thing that they didn't do for us that we thought was not right was that when we had to leave early for a tour one day, they didn't provide breakfast just because the time was inconvenient for them. The town bell tolled every 15 min till about 9pm, so if you're a light sleeper, this may not be for you; otherwise, would HIGHLY recommend this place!!!

We had a fabulous week at the end of October in Argegno, on the west of the lake, with Nicole and Paul. Details can be found at www.wrightart.com. As well as providing all of the usual B&B kindness and friendliness, they can advise where to go and what to see, and equally importantly where is good to eat. They are located five minutes from the lake side boat pier. We've now been four times we love it so much. They also have a self-catering apartment with breakfast for those who like to be more adventurous in the wonderful food markets in the villages on the lake. Almost forgot to say the views are spectacular from the apartment balconies! Sitting eating breakfast or drinking an early evening glass of fizz overlooking the lake is just fabulous. Will be returning again without a doubt.

B&B by Inverness
The Daviot Lodge outside of Inverness is FABULOUS!! www.daviotlodge.co.uk It is in the beautiful countryside 5 minutes from Inverness which is great because you don't have to hear the busy traffic you would hear in town. The stars at night are unbelievable too. The rooms are great and the sitting room is wonderful too with a big roaring fire at night. Well worth the money!

Best B&B near Florence – La Tartaruga - Montecatini
Best B&B near Florence – La Tartaruga - Montecatini
My wife and I stayed at La Tartaruga B&B (www.la-tartaruga.com) for eight days last september. What a great experience! The B&B is located in Montecatini, about 40 km west of Florence and about an hour's drive to Pisa and the coast, a good place from which to start your holidays in Tuscany.
We had a very large bedroom, with a very comfortable king-size bed, a modern bathroom, and a balcony with a nice view. Everything was more than clean!
Our hostess, Sylvie Leder, was wonderful! She speaks French, English, German and, of course, Italian! No communication problems there! She is a wealth of good advice for her guests. She was a great help in planning our daily outings. She had all the tools to make our visits enjoyable: street maps of surrounding cities, Florence, Lucca, Montecatini, etc., lists of great restaurants, tips on how to get around by car, by train, where to go and where not to go. She helped us with museum reservations. At her suggestion, we parked our car at the local train station ( less then 10 minutes from the B&B) and took the train to Florence ( about 55 min ). We did this three days in a row: no stress with traffic and no parking problems!
Her husband is a local butcher, so every morning for breakfast, there was always a choice of fine meats to accompany different kinds of bread, toast, cake, cheese, yogurt, orange juice, milk, coffee, name it!
Take the time to read what's written on the Graffiti Wall, from 2004 up to today, about La Tartaruga B&B. We can confirm that what you read there is really what you get! You will be convinced that this B&B is where you want to stay during your next visit in Tuscany.

Italy-Switz. Sept. 09
We spent 20 days in Italy and Switzerland and had a great time in both. In Rome, we stayed in an apartment near the Campo dei Fiori arranged by Mauro, who was terrific. The apartment slept six at a very reasonable rate. He picked us up at the airport and at the end of our stay took us to Hertz to pick up our car. Email him at firstname.lastname@example.org In Orvieto we stayer at a terrific small hotel, the Hotel Corso. Friendly people, nice rooms, and great breakfasts. www.hotelcorso.net. Just outside San Gimigiano we loved the Casale del Cotone run by Alasandro and a very pleasant staff. Excellent dinners available two nights a week, in a beautiful setting.www.casaledelcotone.com In Florence we stayed with Franco at the BB Novecento and enjoyed him very much. Reasonable and right by the Duomo. Up four flights of stairs, but worth the hall. www.bbnovecentofirenze.com
In Lake Como we found a treasure in a small hotel in Cadanabbia across from Billagio on the left side of the lake. The Hotel La-Marianna. Run by Paola and her chef husband Tiziano, this was a terrific find. Excellent value, beautiful views and a terrific reataurant. email@example.com We will go back here for sure.
In Interlaken, we stayed at the Sunny Days Hotel. Dave, an englishman, is a terrific host. Prices very reasonable. www.sunnydays.ch
In Zurich, we stayed at an excellent small hotel, the Hotel St. Georges. www.hotel-st-georges.ch
Switzerland was expensive.
I would definitely go back to all these places again!!

Braeside Cottage, Fauldhouse, Scotland
I want to highly recommend Braeside Cottage in Fauldhouse, Scotland that is owned and run by Bill and Eileen Mathieson. We stayed with them for four nights recently and found them to be helpful, friendly, and very personable. Bill is the cook and will prepare a custom breakfast for his guests including the huge Scottish breakfast if you desire it. We had that breakfast the first morning we were there and it kept us the rest of the day. It was delicious also. Fauldhouse is an ideal setting for those travelers who may wish to explore both Edinburgh and Glasgow as it is located almost exactly between the two cities on the rail line. I liked its setting because it is a small town and does not have city street noise that often keeps me awake at night in cities but it is close enough to the cities that you can be there quickly by train. Bill and Eileen provide all the modern comforts that one needs and friendly helpful advice to go with it. We enjoyed meeting them and hope to return soon.

Two wonderful Ireland B&Bs
My husband and I just returned from 16 days in Ireland where we stayed in numerous B&Bs. Although several were lovely, we can highly recommend 2 wonderful and beautiful B&Bs. The breakfasts were amazing and offered a nice departure from the traditional Irish breakfast, which was also offered. The first is in Kinsale and about 2-3 miles outside of town, but well worth the drive to the tranquil, scenic setting. It is called Rivermount B&B. However, I do believe it is currently closed for the winter season. The second is in Salthill, just outside of Galway. It is called Marless House and is about a block from the ocean. Do take the time to check out their websites. You will not be disappointed.

Domus Borgognona B & B
Prior to a Mediterranean cruise, my husband and I stayed at the Domus Borgognona Bed and Breakfast for three nights. Our room was clean and beautifully decorated. The location was within walking distance to most of Rome's historic sights. Our host, Bruno, provided us with so much helpful information both before and after our stay. A delicious continental breakfast was delivered to our room every morning at the time requested. We would highly recommend Bruno's Domus Borgognona to anyone traveling to Rome.

Varenna (Lake Como) B&B La Ca'Noeva
The "new" house in town is only 200 years old, but has been beautifully renovated into a great & inexpensive B&B. Living room, kitchen stocked with food you can cook yourself (fresh eggs, cheese, cookies, homemade jam, espresso maker, washer). 3 bedrooms with great views of the lake from some and 2 modern baths. Chef Moreno's son owns it, but was out of town while we there & he and Rosella were wonderful hosts, while also running the restaurant & cooking classes at Ristorante Il Caminetto across the street. This is about 10 minutes from Varenna in Gittana di Perledo, but well worth the ride (free with B&B) or 10 euros. Chef Moreno shared a toast with us our last nite and his life's dream is to do a cooking show with Jay Leno.

Friendliest B&B in Inverness, Scotland!
Ardconnel House B&B hosts in Inverness, Scotland, John and Elizabeth, were the friendliest and most compassionate of all B&B hosts we encountered in our recent trip to London, Scotland, and Ireland. Not only did they welcome us at the door with maps and suggestions for our stay, but they also inquired about each day, phoned to confirm plane flights, and even more amazing, drove us to a Castle and Culloden battlefield since we didn't have a car! But even more special me is how they have kept in touch with us since our stay there to become close friends. Their breakfast was our favorite with backed goods including homemade pastries and soda bread, hot food choices, fresh fruits, and much more. The rooms are clean, cozy, and decorated in a friendly welcome, including the teddy bears! I hope all try to include a visit there for an experience of a lifetime.

DeiMori B&B, Florence
A wonderful place to stay in Florence. Very comfortable and good sized rooms and a very cental location ...short walks to all the major sights. What sets the Deimori apart from the rest is the wonderful customer service. From the personal check-in with Suzanne (where all our questions and more were answered) to the jovial checkout with Peter, I felt like a guest in a friends home. The breakfast (homemade bread) on the balcony every morning was very good. The recommendations for restaurants we got from Suzanne were top notch. Whyndam Park Lodge is the place to stay if you are traveling through Wiltshire Co. to see Stonehenge. Suzanne & Peter have a great B&B with an outstanding breakfast and great beds. This is the only place we have found English pancakes on the breakfast menu. Salisbury itself offers much to see and experience. Zeevat's Bed & Breakfast in Munich was a Pleasure for my stay and I travel 40% of the time. Jan and Fatima truly know where the Term "Customer Service" comes from in their years of experience. From the moment I arrived I felt welcome and a sense that I was not too far from home (in Nebraska). They provide all the little extras that any other Hotel chain would charge for at "no extra" fee. Rome (Vatican 5 min walk)
I have visited Rome a handful of times, but have never been completely satisfied with my accomodations, that is, until several weeks ago when I stayed at "At Your Place B&B". Before actually arriving I was pleased with the timely answering of e-mails by Luca Patrizi, propreitor. This B&B was impeccably clean and in an excellent location for many major sights, and easy to navigate from the nearby Tiber River, Castel Sant'Angelo and the Vatican. Rome can be exhausting, if your feet are killing, take the double-decker bus in the afternoon for a reduced fare and a quick overview. There is nothing technical or especially informative about this tour, but it can be a nice reprieve. It was helpful and convenient that Luca had these tickets available at the B&B. This B&B is newly refurbished, with a less is more decorating style, classic and tasteful.

Sarum College - Best stay ever! We learned the hard way to stick only to Rick Steves' recommendations for "sleeping." And glad we did in Salisbury! We were very impressed by the acommodations at Sarum College. The friendliness of the staff and the care with which we were treated made it very hard to leave. Three Exceptional B&B's in France (Normandy, Loire Valley, Provence)
Just returned from 2+ weeks in France and must share my strongest possible recommendations on three unusual and absolutely outstanding B&Bs:
(1) La Ducrie (www.la-ducrie.com) in Le Hommet D' Arthenay is a 15th century Norman castle that has been converted into a lovely, upscale B&B. Joe provides an outstanding tour of the D-Day beaches, and Vivienne, on request, can provide a sensational dinner. Massive rooms, beautifully furnished, in a rural setting with black swans and a moat surrounding the castle. Gracious hosts who make you feel like family, and a good breakfast to start your day. Ideally located for Mont Ste. Michel.
(2) Les Moulins de Vontes (www.moulinsdevontes.com). This was one of the best finds of our trip and a total mystery in that it only has four reviews on Tripadvisor, none since 2007. What a beautiful, idyllic setting! This B&B is in a converted mill in the middle of the Indres River. Luxurious rooms in the most tranquil setting. We went to bed every night with the windows wide open so we could listen to the river rushing by below. Rowboats are provided to take a little excursion upriver. Delicious breakfast, too. Location is perfect to take in the chateaux...Chenonceau, for example, is about 20 min. away. Odile and her husband, Jean-Jacques, speak excellent English and can't do enough for you....even helped me take care of a parking ticket!).
(3) La Bastide Sainte Anne (www.labastideanne.com) in Castillon-du-Gard, is technically in the Languedoc region but perfectly situated for the major Provence sites. Amanda and Garry score a perfect 10 on how to run a B&B...they have thought of everything. Spectacular views of the Pont-du-Gard from their terrace, breakfasts so beautifully presented you find yourself taking pictures, an indoor pool to go along with the sumptuous room accommodations, etc. Without question the nicest B&B we have ever had the pleasure of staying in! Nimes (Roman ruins), Uzes (authentic town with a great Saturday market), Avignon, and Arles are all an easy drive. And all of this comes with the nicest hosts you'll ever encounter!
All three places are quite small (three rooms in each) so book now. You will thank me!

Wonderful B&B by Berchtesgaden, Germany
Just returned from a trip which included 3 nights at the Pension Mayringerlehen. We've stayed here twice before (in '06 and '07). This happens to be our favorite place to stay anywhere. Mosel and Rhine B&Bs
We're your basic older, retired travelers, long past the age when hitch hiking and sleeping in bushes has any adventurous cachet. As this is written, we've made our way to the Rhine area and have now stayed in 3 B&Bs recommended by Rick. Here is the report: all have been spot on regarding cost, charm and hospitality. Germany is surprisingly affordable, especially compared to Ireland or England. In Cochem we booked at Haus Andreas but discovered we were bumped to another hostel, Gastehaus Hilken (B&Bs often work as a sort of collective when one is full). After confusing instructions to Gastehaus Hilken ("go left, left, left...") we were met by Marga Hilken. All pain and suffering stopped there. Marga is an absolute gem, the room was top-notch and quiet and we packed left-over breakfast for a snack lunch. I was worried that the cost would be greater (this is the only part of the collective system that bothered me: changes in price across B&Bs) but it was a reasonable 23 Euros each (=46/night; 92 for two nights) vs. Haus Andreas which was a couple Euro cheaper per night. Big thumbs up! Next two nights in Bacharach, first at Ursula Orth, then at Pension Lettie, both exemplary. Again, Rick hit the bulls-eye. And about the same price range as Marga Hilton in Cochem. Lettie could double as a travel agent: speaks great English, internet for a nominal fee, phone available for local and international calls (again very nominal) and bus schedules covering the walls in her reception area. Kind of a two-fer: bed and travel agent rolled into one. Also probably the best breakfast on the Rhine. Anyway, nothing but good feelings about this part of the world.

We spent two nights at the most charming B&B, La Bastide Rose in Le Thor, France, a twenty minute drive from the Palace of the Popes in Avignon. The most gracious hosts, Poppy Salinger (widow of Pierre Salinger) and her son, Emmanuel de Menthon open their home, the Pierre Salinger Museum and a wonderful sculpture garden to a small group of guests. Emmanuel is also the chef, and prepares amazing gourmet dinners, following aperitifs on the terrace. After a somewhat stressful train trip from Monterosso to Rome (mix-up with the schedule, full trains, late trains, etc.), we arrived at Termini Station around 8:00 pm. We decided to walk to the Nicolas Inn, suitcases rolling along behind us. When we arrived, Francois was actually waiting, outside on the street, to greet us. It was unexpected and so appreciated by a couple of weary travelers. After showing us our room, he offered us a cool drink, which was, again, SO APPRECIATED, buy a couple of hot travelers. He and Melissa we just delightful, our room was just what we needed, and we looked forward to the breakfast each morning at the little cafe down the street. All in all.....absolutely perfect. We will definitely stay here again if we are lucky enough to return to Rome.

Kenmare Ireland b&b
Wow! Write this down: Shelburne Lodge. This b&b floored us in Kenmare, Co. Kerry, Ireland. Land here and plan on multiple nights while you explore the peninsula "rings" nearby. The historic home, the location, the graciousness of the family. And most importantly, the best breakfast I've had in several trips around the country. Over the top breakfast! Only downside is they need to upgrade the wifi to other rooms besides the dining area.

Kinsale b&b Pier House Inn
My wife and I highly recommend the Pier House Inn in Kinsale, just south of Cork, Ireland! Ideal location in this delightful coastal town. Clean and spacious. Modern, friendly decor and recently upgraded. Very gracious and helpful hosts. Looks out on the harbor. BEST restaurant right behind the inn. Max's Wine Bar. You simply cannot go wrong with both inn and restaurant!

Ferme de Tayac Dordogne SW France
We stayed here for 4 lovely nights. This is the first time ever we actually felt sad to leave an accommodation. Ferme de Tayac was without doubt the highlight of our vacation in the stunning Dordogne. If you are ever lucky enough to visit this area, then Ferme de Tayac is definitely the place to stay. Just google "Ferme de Tayac" and see for yourself why everyone loves this B&B

We just returned from a trip to the Dordogne area of France with our 5 year old daughter. Rick's suggestions were booked, so we stayed in a B&B called Les Charmes de Carlucet, near Saint Ciprien, about 15 minutes from Sarlat. It was outstanding--outdoor pool, air conditioning, free parking, very spacious ground, terrific breakfast and wonderfully helpful owners. Don't miss this one--it's a winner, and very kid-friendly too!

Excellent B&B in Dordogne ,France
My husband & I stayed at Le Four a Sel(their url is http://www.lefourasel.com), a b&b in Montignac,(know for Lascaux prehistoric caves). We ate dinner at a restaurant 30 minutes away( recommended by them for its gastronomic meal at a great price). We wanted to go by taxi so my husband could drink but the taxi service could not collect us so the owner,David, offered to pick us up .That in itself was already generous of them. Not only that, when we arrived at the b&b after the meal, I discovered I left my purse on the table at the restaurant. David drove back himself to collect it for me. Such excellent service and kindness!

Bed and Breakfast Rome
Friendly B&B in ROME We stayed at the Finestre sul Vaticano B&B (www.romabandb.it) for 3 ngts pre-cruise. Max and Lavinia (the owners) arranged our transfers from the airport to their B&B and then to the cruise port. Our transfer from the airport, which was very smooth, even though our plane had arrived about 1.5 hours late. We were unable to call ahead to inform them that we were going to be late, but the gentleman at the airport was pleasant none the less. Upon arrival, we were graciously shown our room and the facilities, including the free Internet access on the computer in the common room, which was very nice. Welcome they offer is superb! This property was exactly as described by the other reviewers. The metro stop was literally 1 block away, which gave us easy access to the attractions across town. We loved being so close to good shopping streets and within 5 minutes walking distance to the Vatican & St. Peters and with excellent restaurants within a short walk. The breakfast was awesome and delivered at the exact time requested. They are so quick to respond to e-mails and in answering any questions you may have. We enjoyed our stay and would stay there again and we highly recommend this establishment to our friends. Grazie Max and Lavinia! PS don't miss a gelato at Millennium ice-cream shop just 2 minutes from Le Finestre sul Vaticano Bed and Breakfast … it's a must! www.romabandb.it

The view of the city was amazing. The room was clean and cozy. We watched the sunset with our bread and cheese picnic, overlooking the olive and lemon trees. my husband and i are going back as soon as we can can. I recomend this place to everyone. It was a very memorable experience and so relaxing.

Last May, we had the pleasure of staying at Il Vicario outside of San Gimingnano. Fulvio and Katia were wonderful hosts, warm, friendly, informative. Totally welcoming and Americann-friendly! We loved Gabriella's assistant, Alison. We recently stayed 4 nights at the Bloberger Hof on the Moosstrasse in Salzburg. This a clean, modern, pleasant place to stay. It's surrounded by farm land. It's a convenient 20 minute bus ride to the center of Salzburg--buses run about every 20 minutes. The B&B is run by Inga and her daughter Sylvia. Breakfast is wonderful and filling--meats, cheeses, pastries, cereal, fruit, breads, juice and Inga will make you eggs to order each morning. There is also a small restaurant with about a dozen selections for dinner. We ate in the restaurant it was wonderful cooked to order food. This is a value and a friendly welcoming place.

The Kriemhild in Munich is a great place to call home when visiting this wonderful city. It is a family run establishment. The rooms are clean, modern and comfortable--actually quite large by European standards. The neighborhood is residential and quiet. The Kriemhild is a five minute walk to the Hirshbiergarten. There is free parking. The breakfast is good typical fare--hard boiled eggs, pastries, cereal, juice, meats, cheese, bread, yogurt. It is conveniently located on tram route 17 which will wisk you to the Hauptbahnhof in about 15 minutes. Look into getting the partner pass for the transport system. As Steve mentions in his book its to good to believe.

Hobo B&B Bruges
Hobo B&B in Bruges I only write reviews for the exceptionally good or the exceptionally bad, and this is one of the exceptionally good ones. Hobo B&B is a delight. It's well-priced and it's easy walking distance to everything you will want to see in Bruges and more. The owner, Kristin, has a delightful, calm energy about her. Her house has been renovated into a B&B with obvious love and care and she clearly likes her job. If you're in the navy room you share a toilet with the people on the other side of the tiny landing. My partner and I are finicky about en suites so we were not too happy to find that we didn't have one, but as it turned out, it was not a problem at all. If you're put off by having to share a toilet, don't be. It's as close to an ensuite as it can be, and to be fair, I can see how she couldn't possibly have put an ensuite in every room. Every room does have its own bathroom, though, with bath and shower. Kristin provides parking and a warm welcome, and to top it off, breakfast is amazing. By far the best, and biggest, breakfast I've ever had at a B&B. I have a voracious male partner, and even he couldn't finish it. This was a place I would stay at again and again. There is nothing like a house with warm, friendly energy and good food. It really made our stay in Bruges complete.

Romantica Pucci B&B
Romantica Pucci in Civata di Banoregio - Tony and I stayed with her and her wonderful husband in late May, 2009. Madame Pucci is the most gracious and charming hostess in all of Italia. Not only is the inn perfect in every way - beautiful rooms, bathrooms, bedding and every amenity, but they are so kind. We arrived very late after being lost and they waited up for us until midnight. The next morning, and every morning we were there (we stayed an extra night), was the most incredible breakfast - homemade breads, cakes and pies, freshly scrambled eggs, fresh coffee and fruit, cheeses, etc. Madame Pucci finds out a little about each of her guests - her B & B is her calling, I think - to provide a truly memorable expereince for all. She helps you plan your day, gives you a map, and anticipates your every need. We got "home" that night well into the dinner service and she quickly opened a romantic table for us and we had an incredible meal. Their home is decorated with beautiful antiques. The top floor bedroom (where Rick Steves had stayed just the week prior) was perfect except for the street noise - but who wants to sleep late in Italy - there is too much to see and do! You must see Civita. Go stay with Pucci. thank you Rick for recomending her. Thank you Pucci and lovely husband Pucci for a perfect experience. I hope you ares till enjoying Tony's Italian CD.

Appreciation of B&B Le Mansarde Venice
Dear travelers, On a recent trip to Italy (spring 2009), my husband and I along with my brother-in-law and sister-in-law stayed in a very charming B&B in Venice called Le Mansarde. Our host Anna-Maria was very good to us and available to answer any questions we had and offer advice about Venice. She even marked on our map the restaurants where the locals like to eat. We used the two only rooms in the B&B so we felt like we rented an appartment. Everything was spotless. The rooms were decorated in rich antiques and the bathrooms were newly renovated. Very nice living room. Access to fridge. The beds were comfortable and there wasn't much noise from the street at night. From the B&B we walked right out to a busy street with shops and restaurants and were very near transportation. The price we paid was the lowest out of all our accomadations in Italy. My only complaint would be that Anna-Maria would frequently check up on us while we were gone to make sure we were respecting the numerous rules to protecting her antiques. It was a little annoying but at the same time amusing. Altogether, we had a delightful stay and we all agreed that Le Mansarde was our favorite accommodation in Italy! Her pictures on Internet are accurate and look better in real life!Have a nice trip!

Perfect Provencale B&B
Sous L'Olivier, Lagnes, Provence, France.
We have been staying here each summer for the last 10 years! We started coming before we had children and now our children are 2 and 3 yrs old we are still coming back. Wonderful location, fantastic food. In the evening everyone who chooses to dine there sits around one of the two huge tables outside and talks over wine and cusine. The pool, gardens and lounges offer a lovely place to unwind. Location wise, there are so many gems of towns to see within half an hour, that you won't get to see them all.
Unlike some B&B's, they are happy for you to relax at the house all day if you choose and make you very welcome. Julien and Carole are great hosts. Julien learned to cook from his mother (herself a fantastic cook with a restaurant in town) and he went on to train in a top London restaurant, before returning home to start his B&B business.
If I was being selfish, I wouldn't post this - as we would like to keep it to ourselves, but we have met so many freindly and intersting guests around the table over the years, that I thought - wht the hell!
Avignon, USA Thu 08/27/2009
We also stayed at Il Colle Degli Ulivi in August! 5 nights at such a great place! About 30 min train ride out of Rome gave us a whole other world to experience. It was in the mid 90's while we were in Rome but it was so deliciously cool in our cottage (and no AC!). So quiet and refreshing after being in Rome during the day. Ivano or Terhi pick you up and drop you off at the train station for free. Ivano is a wonderful cook, we ate 3 dinners with them. He worked around likes/dislikes/allergies with no problem. Such a relaxing way to spend the evening under the stars, slowly eating wonderful food.
Their recommendations were outstanding. We wanted a quieter day than Rome one day and Ivano recommended nearby Palestrina. The museum there would be packed if it were in Rome, as it was, we nearly had it to ourselves. The Nile mosaic is jaw-dropping, amazing. Ivano or Terhi will pick you up/drop you off anywhere for a very small fee so you don't need a car.
Ivano and Terhi are outstanding, attentive hosts if you are looking for a different, more relaxed experience. Oh, and breakfast was great too!

Great place and friendly hosts - B&B in ROME
We just got back from Rome and a week with Max and Lavinia at Le Finestre sul Vaticano. They were a delight and so helpful in arranging transportation and giving invaluable advice on public transportation. They were available for answering questions and we enjoyed chatting with them. They were so helpful for when to schedule seeing popular sights, especially the Vatican Museum. (Never go in the morning). The room and bathroom were clean and the air conditioning was great since it was very hot in August. It is a great value, especially considering how much time you spend in your room with all there is to see in Rome. We found the location very convenient to the Vatican and all transportation.
We knew we weren't going to get the kind of breakfasts that we are used to when we are at home, so what we were served was fine and good, especially with all the great food in Rome for lunch and dinner. We threw our coins in Trevi fountain, so if we make it back to Rome we would definitley spend time there again and would recommend it to friends. Thanks to Max & Lavinia. www.romabandb.it

We travelled all through Italy this summer, and Rome was our last stop. We took a chance booking this little B&B called "Il Colle Degli Ulivi" outside of Rome, and it turned out to be our favourite accommodation! Wonderful B&B in Bruges, Belgium
If you find yourself in Bruges, Belgium, do not miss out on staying at "The Royal Stewart", a charming and affordable B&B. In 2 months of travel throughout Europe, staying in B&Bs in several countries, the Royal Stewart stood out as a gem. It was one of the least expensive B&Bs we stayed in, yet it certainly did not sacrifice any quality. The front room, breakfast room, and little court yard were beautiful, and our room was very finely decorated and exceedingly comfortable. The place is also ideally situated on a quiet street but quite close to most of the main sites. Most importantly, the service was top-notch. Not only did Maggie (a Scotish transplant) provide us with invaluable insight in terms of what to see and do, she made us feel like part of a family. She fostered a positive and communicative environment in the breakfast room every morning, and she always joined in on the conversations. Also, if she does offer to make you a pancake, do not pass it up! Alas, we had to leave, but we will definitely go back again.

Great B&B on Lake Como
While touring Lake Como this past May, we were lucky enough to stay in a B&B in the town of Argengo, owned by an English couple, Paul Wright and his partner Nicola. First, it was a very good value (only 60 Euro per night) even though we had a wonderful unobstructed view of the lake. This price included a nice breakfast, complete with fresh fruit every day. Both Paul and Nicola are a fountain of knowledge regarding the culture and history of the region, and recommended numerous activities and tours to keep us busy. Rooftop Garden B&B in Florence
We just returned from a wonderful Italian holiday which included Florence. We loved our stay at the B&B Novecento on Via Ricasoli. From there, we could walk to all the major sites very easily. The B&B is run by a gregarious couple, Franco and Sawako, who endeared themselves to us right away when they carried our luggage up the 5 flights to the hotel using a specially rigged pulley. The rooms are spacious and clean, but the rooftop garden is what really sold us. My husband Ted and I recently returned from a whirlwind 2 month tour of Europe. I wanted to mention one particular B&B that was truly wonderful and reasonable in price. It is called "Pension Silbernagl" in Castlerotto (Kastleruth) in Northern Italy near the Austrian border. The accommodations with balconies were modern, spacious and very clean and the view from your balcony of the Dolomites was spectacular. Petra, the owner, serves a delicious breakfast with eggs to order and can't do enough for you to make your stay more pleasant. There is also a heated indoor pool and spa. The nearby hiking atop the Alpe de Sussi is fantastic and not to be missed.

Pension Mayer - Bled, Slovenia
During our month long whirlwind tour of Europe, we had the pleasure of staying in this B&B. Everything from the room, to the included breakfast & amazing restaurant were fantastic. We had some laundry that was desperately needing to be done and there were no laundromats in the area. The staff happily offered to do it for us, which required washing & hang drying an enormous bag of smelly clothes. We fully wanted to pay for this service, but upon checkout, found that they didn't charge us! To a young couple on a budget, this was truly appreciated :)

Firenze(Florence) B & B Comfort
House Katti on Via Faenza 21 in Florence was warm, welcoming and accommodating. We came earlier than planned, and they graciously found a way to let us stay though having a full house already. Cappuccino and croissants greeted us each morning and bonding which made this lodging portion of the trip stand above all others . Maria and Francesco's home is close to Piazza del Duomo and some good food down the street. They worked hard to overcome language issues w/interpreter web and books at hand..

Memorable Stay in Norway's Fjord Country
My family traveled to Norway last summer and stayed at the lovely Storfjord Hotel and B&B set high above Glomset Bay on Norway's western coast. Our family of three, husband, wife, and teenager, made ourselves at home in the Bringebaer suite, enjoying the roomy and comfortable accommodations and great breakfasts. But what made our trip especially memorable was a visit with our Norwegian relatives, arranged and hosted by the hotel's proprietors. Barry and his wife, spent several hours helping us track down our relatives using a last name and a phone book, our only clues we had when we left Seattle. To our surprise and delight, we made contact and were able to reestablish a connection with my husband's family! I would recommend the Storfjord to anyone looking for a memorable stay in Norway's fjord country!

Slane, Ireland - north of Dublin - at Newgrange
If you are headed to Newgrange there is a great B&B in Slane, just north of Dublin (and away from all the traffic in these small towns). The name of the place is Millhouse Hotel but this is a true B&B. I am sitting in the breakfast room right now! I had a bubble bath last night and have a massage booked for today! Millhouse is at the one way bridge on N2 in Slane. It is beautifully restored with great interiors-only hotel I have taken pictures of~! The beds are amazing - I slept better than I have in weeks! I have beautiful views of the river flowing by and the chef is wonderful! Talk to them about pricing - they are hungry for business!

Church Gates B & B, Cranbrook, UK
Six years ago we took a chance on a B&B located in the heart of Cranbrook, a small town in England. We needed to be near transportation because we didn't want to drive. When we arrived the hosts, Joe & David, told us taxis and bus trips were expensive, but if we would like, they would drive us around! We spent three days flying down country roads and coming up on manors, gardens, and even a medieval castle in a moat! We had the best time, laughing and eating great picnics and pub food, it was amazing. We have been back twice, the last time in May and as always, they are just the nicest guys on earth.

Chateau de Lignerolles is a B&B about 20 min. from Bayeux and owned by Roel & Pia Klinkhamer. roel is the owner and host of the Victory Tours listed on Rick's website. This B&B is exquisitely decorated with art, as Pia is an artist. The breakfast was delicious, with fresh bread purchased that morning from the local bakery. Pia gave us recommendations for local restaurants and made us a get-away breakfast on our last morning as we needed to catch an early train. The space is clean, comfortable and spacious, with free wi-fi, and the hosts couldn't have been friendlier.

B&B in Provence - Fantastic
I, my wife, sister-in-law, and her husband just got back from France (7/09) where one of our most memorable stays (for 3 days/nights) was at Sous L'Olivier in Provence. The location was perfect for exploring Avignon, the Cote de Rhone and the Luberon's beautiful hill towns. Our hosts Julien and Carole were fantastic. We had only planned to eat dinner there the first night but it was so good (Julien is a formally trained chef) we ended up eating there every night. It was a communal table which we shared with fellow travellers from Holland, Switzerland, Germany and of course France. Every meal was fantastic and the setting on the terrace by the pool with the Luberon mountains in the background was fantastic. There was nothing better than getting back to Sous L'Olivier after a day of sightseeing to the pool and beautiful garden. We definitely would go back again for both the setting and Julien's and Carole's hospitality. Rick was right when he said they'd take care of your every need. Truly a wonderful experience and I can't recommend Sous O'Livier highly enough.

Best B&B in Florence
If you're looking for a great place to stay in Florence, look no further. Based on a rave recommendation from our close friends, we stayed for 3 nights at the B&B Novencento. Upon arrival, after a few short blocks walk from the train station, we were greeted warmly by our energetic and friendly host, Franco Novencento. The B&B is located roughly a block from the Duomo and steps away from ATMs and corner stores. In the evenings we would go up to the shared roof deck (where we never saw anyone else) and would drink wine and eat until we could hardly stay awake. Due to the sheer size of the amazing cathedral, even though a block away, you feel like you could reach out and touch it. Every time we were up there we couldn't stop taking pictures and had a hard time believing the amazing room rates. Franco recommended a few restaurants to us, all of which were phenominal and due to his recommendation gave us a discount. I would say while traveling we generally keep to ourselves. However, Franco's panache and liveliness, coupled with his solid grasp of English (but drive to learn more as we watched MTV during breakfast:) made the stay that much more fun. We were in Italy for over 2 weeks and didn't come across a more charming and vivacious person.

B&Bs in Barcelona & Lisbon
We stayed in two wonderful B&Bs in Barcelona and Lisbon. In Barcelona, the Marina View B&B was amazing. Centrally located near the bottom of the Ramblas, affordably priced, and very nicely appointed. The bathroom was beautiful! We even had a balcony with a view of the marina (2 of the 4 rooms do). The owner couldn't have been nicer. In Lisbon, the Zuzabed B&B was also delightful. The room was small but perfect, and the owner was REALLY helpful and actually drove our manual rental car up and down the Lisbon hills to some free parking! In my opinion, small B&Bs will always beat hotels in personality and price, as long as you do your homework (I used TripAdvisor) and pick one that comes recommended.

The Anchorage B&B in Eyemouth, Scotland
We couldn't believe our luck. For only 25 pounds per person, "The Anchorage", Upper Houndlaw Road, in Eyemouth, Berwickshire, Scotland, proved to be the best B&B we stayed in during our 2 weeks in Scotland, June 2009. The interior has been completely renovated, decorated in striking black and white. But it was Janice Mendoza, the owner, who made our stay even more special. Unfailingly kind and generous, she provided one of the best breakfasts and certainly the best conversation we encountered. Eyemouth is a great base if you're visiting St. Abb's Head Nature Reserve, enjoy cliff walks, or are day-tripping to Holy Island and Bamburgh Castle in NW England. We've stayed in B&Bs that often deserve 5 stars. The Anchorage deserves 10!

Great B&B in Venice - Corte Campana
My husband and I stayed at Corte Campana with Riccardo in May and really enjoyed it. First it is in the perfect location...very close to the San Marco Square and tons of restaurants...but still in a quiet place.
The accomodation was wonderful. All of the rooms were huge and each had a private bath. It was so interesting because Riccardo actually grew up in the place with his family and then turned it into a B&B.
He also had a great breakfast every morning for us (yogurt, rolls, spreadable cheese, Nutella, and more). He was also so helpful and always willing to give recommendations for sights to see and places to eat.
He even invited us to a pub with him and his friends to watch the Futbol game with Juventus vs. AC Milan. It was great being with locals.
I would definitely stay there again.

Friendly B&B in ROME
We stayed at the Finestre sul Vaticano B&B (www.romabandb.it) for 3 ngts pre-cruise. We loved being so close to good shopping streets and within 10 minutes walking distance to the Vatican & St. Burgundy B&B (Not a Traditional Hotel--Honest)
Great B&B in Burgundy--I realize this Graffiti Wall part of Rick's website is NOT for hotel ideas, and what I state below is much more of a B&B than a traditional sense of the term "hotel", although that is it's official name. My wife and I recently concluded a 3-week drive through east and central France. In addition to the consistent recommendations in Rick's book and the above cited Alsace B&B, we found a great B&B in the heart of Burgundy -- Hotel de VOUGEOT (http://hotel-vougeot.com). It's precisely between Dijon and Beaune, just off the main highway and essentially on Burgundy's wine road. The location could not have been better for those driving though the area. Pallazina Cesira - Montalcino
Pallazina Cesira - Montalcino, WONDERFUL
My wife and I spent a week at Pallazina Cesira in Montalcino with Lucilla and Roberto. This week was the highlight of our vacation. The location of this B & B is fantastic, right in the heart of Montalcino. The room was large and very clean, two windows opened to overlook a lovely little garden area. We had a large bathroom with a very nice shower. Breakfast was a delight with fresh Tuscan bread, jams and jellies (my favorite was the home made Cherry and Chestnut jam). Not to be missed is Roberto's Omletes, fresh from the farm eggs and cheese, absolutely the best. If you are fortunate you may experience Lucilla's Crepes, like the Omlette's, not to be missed, they were fantastic. Roberto has a vast knowledge of Italian history, from ancient times, to the feuds between Sienna and Florence, to the history of Montalcino. He was very helpful in plotting our daily trips and in suggesting where to go and what to do; each day he would make a map so we wouldn't get lost, also he was very helpful in recommending the best restaurants in town. Both Lucilla and Roberto speak excellent English. We have traveled many years in Europe and have never met two more warm, welcoming and wonderful people. We came to Italy for relaxation and met to wonderful people that we will forever call our "Friends". I highly recommend that if you are in the Montalcino area you visit Lucilla and Roberto. Holly Villa B&B Bath UK
We had a great time in Bath UK while at the Holly Villa B&B. Three adults shared a triple room that was large, beautifully decorated and spotlessly clean. There was a huge window, overlooking a quiet residential street, with three chairs, three night stands and comfortable double and single beds. The bathroom was fairly large and had plenty of hot water. Holly Villa includes a good full English breakfast. The property also has a flower garden/yard with with several benches to enjoy so restful quiet time The owners Jill and Ken were wonderful. They took phone messages about last minute tour changes for us. They also cheerfully provided early breakfast so we could catch our early tours. The B&B is charming, but in truth, it was Jill and Ken that made our stay so memorable . Their warmth and good humor made our entire stay a real pleasure. They are located with in a ten minute walk of the heart of Baths' main attractions (the Roman Baths, the Abby) and the starting point of bus and walking tours. I encourage anyone planning a trip to the Bath area to stay at Holly Villa, I'm sure you will love your stay.

Town House B&B Conwy, Wales
Just returned from 2 weeks in GB stopping at places I had not previously enjoyed. After a night of excitment in a Manchester pub as Manchester United played Barcelona in the playoffs, I took a train to Conwy Wales. Using my ETBD guidebook I located the Town House B&B. Hosts Alan & Elane Naughton are awesome people both have served previous careers looking after and helping people. The B&B is tastefully decorated, clinically clean and is within one block of a great grocery store where picnic supplies are fresh and plentyful.Conwy has great resturants and pubs with castles and gardens available by foot or bus. The Town House is located 50 yards from both train and bus stops. English breakfast or vegetarian. Background music tasteful and at the perfect volume level. Showers easily regulated and maintain constant temperature. What more? The high point has to be the Naughtons - articulate, intelligent, kind and hospitible. B&B of the year in my book!

El Marsam B&B - Umbria, Italy - Wonderful!
I found El Marsam through an internet search - I was looking for an off-the-beaten-path B&B in the Umbria region. I had moved myself from a week-long stay in Tuscany to El Marsam, a gorgeous, 300-yr old stone house that has been converted into a lovely B&B. The innkeepers, Ginda and Mike Simpson, were most hospitable. Mike made a wonderful breakfast for me each morning, despite the fact that I was up with the birds. Ginda reviewed with me my plans for each day, and made great suggestions for things to add to my trip. I saw several medieval hill towns that weren't listed in the guidebooks through Ginda's suggestions - each was nicer than the next! I was only at El Marsam for four days, but when I had an unexpected problem with my bank that affected my funding, Ginda was wonderful in helping me attempt to resolve the problem, and spent the good part of an afternoon allowing me access to her personal computer and telephone. When things didn't work out like I had hoped, Ginda and Mike went way above and beyond the call of duty to ensure that I made it to the airport to catch my flight home. I am so appreciative of their kindness in an unpleasant situation. My favorite experience at El Marsam was the pizza night that I shared with another couple who were also staying on the property. We ate outside and enjoyed wonderful wood-fired pizzas and conversation until it got dark. I came home and made pizza on the grill to try to recapture the special experience! I would highly recommend El Marsam - the location was a great hub to do day trips throughout Umbria. Ginda has put together very useful "day trip" guides that I used on several outings. I had a fabulous time, the accommodations were perfect (cozy room, comfortable bed, great atmosphere), the innkeepers were most gracious and helpful, and I would love to return some day.

Haus-Karin, Rothenburg, Germany
Once again we stayed in Haus-Karin in Rothenburg, Germany. We stayed in a very spacious, immaculate room with a door right to the patio. We were welcomed with a beer and a friendly chat with Karin. Located in a quiet neighbourhood only a 5 minute walk to the walled old city it is a perfect location. Karin and Hans strive to make your vacation just right and even pick up and take you back to the train. I highly recommend staying there and will do so again if ever back in Rothenburg.

Bayeux, France Aggarthi B&B
We stayed 3 nights at the Aggarthi B&B in Bayeux, France. The location was within a block of the Tapestry and cathedral. Plenty of restaurants in the area and our hostess, Merilyn, had recommendations and menus ready for us to check.
There was free wifi in the kitchen that was available to guests to fix tea or coffee and use of a fridge. The gardens were beautiful and our room was clean and comfortable. The buildings were very old as we were in the older section of the city.
We had been traveling and were looking for a place to do laundry but Merilyn offered her services for a very reasonable fee. Her little dogs and rabbits made our stay very enjoyable.

Le Logis de Bresdon - Beautiful B&B + Gite in Angouleme France (Cognac region)
I just returned from a weekend at Le Logis de Bresdon near Angouleme, SW France in the Cognac region. I took the TGV from Paris for the 2 hour trip to Angouleme.
Le Logis is a lovely 19th century manor house with 4 stylish bedrooms and a self contained 2 bedroom gite next door. The British owners Kathy Fortescue and Chris Roach are wonderful - so helpful and fun and they made our stay one of the most memorable in any European B&B. Each morning they served a fabulous breakfast outside and they had lots of information about the locality and the charming villages to explore. The grounds surrounding the lovely house are huge - you can find peace and quiet in the gardens and orchards and there is even a swimming pool. Kathy and Chris will take good care of you and I can not wait to return! They are a great team who cooked us tasty dinners made from fresh local produce and their favorite regional wines. Lake Como Bed and Breakfast
Lake Como Bed and Breakfast - Argegno. What a stay! The comments about Paul Wright and Nicole's place and hospitality were on target. We stayed in the apartment for 70 Euro per night ( Paul discounted our stay as we chose not to have breakfast) and based on our stays in Italy this was clearly our best value. The views were stunning and the apartment was perfect for the three days we stayed with them. Paul does a great job of detailing and planning your day and he bends over backwards to ensure you are having a great time. Ask him to share the stories about George Cloney and Jack Nicklaus and others he has encountered during his many years on Lake Como. Given the opportunity we will be back. Fabulous. The Apartment was Clean and well looked after, the roof terrace offered fantastic views of the Bascilica and other Roman sights. We were just a few hundred yards from the entrance to the sistine chapel. We could not believe our luck. Our first trip to Rome we felt very safe and had a great time.
Anyone going to this apartment must go to Toni and Dino's to eat [come out of apartment building, turn left. cross junction and it is on the right,]100m from apartment, basic but great. The apartment was small but very adequate with air conditioning we went for 4 days on 19th May. We will return to this apartment.

Rustic B&B outside Florence
My wife and I spent a lovely few days at Graziella's charming and rustic B&B "Il Poggiolo"located in the hills just outside of Florence. Although only a few miles from town, it is totally immersed in the countryside, which was a thrill for our kids-they were entranced by the animals on the farm. We were blessed by warm spring weather and enjoyed a picnic lunch under the olive trees. We also had a home cooked meal, made by Graziella. We used the local bus to get into town, and Graziella was more than helpful with our excursion-she arranged for our museum trips and sent us to an excellent restaurant just minutes from the house. She also ferried us to and from the station when we arrived and left. It was an ideal location to enjoy "the simple life" while having Florence just a stone's throw away. Ardconnel House Inverness
We thoroughly enjoyed our 7 day tour of Scotland, one of the highlights of which was a two night stay with John & Elizabeth at their beautiful Victorian villa, Ardconnel House. Everything about this place was outstanding - peace and quiet, comfort, help and advice with dinner/table reservations, and recommendations for monster spotting expeditions to Loch Ness! All that coupled with the best breakfasts we had on our trip should make Ardconnel House the first place to contact for accommodation in the Scottish Highlands!

Just returned from 1st trip to Ireland. stayed in Dingle at Cill Bhreac House (Kill Vrack). Very good value. I got it off the grafitti wall. 3 of us 90 euros. if it was 2 it would have been 60 euros. Great hostess and breakfast. Great rooms. Quiet. This really belongs in the guide book. The prices of the listings you have are pretty high compared to this place.
We stayed in Dun Laoghaire at the Royal Marine Hotel. 3 of us in a suite for 109 euros with free parking. What an absolute steal!!! No included food, but we had a 1 course Sunday buffet with great food for 12.50 Euros. For Ireland that is a bargain and a half.
I can't overemphasize a GPS unit, using the M50 to go around Dublin, and that the motorways are starting to be completed in locations and are fantastically well designed and easy to drive on.
Dingle was DEAD the few days we were there.
In Dublin, we ate at Quays Irish Restaurant in Temple Bar. Packed. Good food. We also tried The Farm on Dawson a block from Trinity College. Not a typical Irish establishment, but very good food.

A Unique Bed and Breakfast
Mary and Denis Murphy, a friendly and energetic couple, own The Lighthouse on the High Road that overlooks Dingle, Ireland. With over ten years of gracious service to their houseguests, they've earned an international reputation for offering visitors an authentic Irish experience. I've heard other travelers praise the Murphys for their clean and comfortably furnished rooms—some with spectacular views of the bay—their reasonable prices, hearty breakfasts (Don't pass up the authentic Irish brown bread.), and their personal attention to helping people find historic sights or seafood restaurants or pubs with traditional Irish music. Both Mary and Denis grew up on the Dingle Peninsula, so they know its countryside and villages, history and customs well. And local residents know and respect the Murphys. When I once mentioned to a shopkeeper in Dingle that my wife and I were staying at The Lighthouse, this woman said, "Aye. That'll be Mary and Denis Murphy. Lovely people. Lovely."
My wife and I have been visiting Dingle since 2002, and every year we return to The Lighthouse.

Heroic Roman Hospitality
We can't say enough about the B&B Le Finestre sul Vaticano in the centre of Rome facing the Vatican … excellent location! Lavinia, who runs this fabulous B&B in Rome (with Max her husband, their little baby boy Lucio and with the help of Lourdes), definitely went above and beyond to make our trip lovely and our stay memorable. Ever ready to give you information, get up early to make breakfast (fabulous Espresso coffee) or suggest you restaurant near the B&B … easily the best food we had in all our time in Italy. The local eateries (trattatorias) were most enjoyable and featured superb menu selections and service. She made the appropriate museum reservations, remaining unflappable through one of Italy's typical half-day strikes (where everything closes). The accommodations were very clean, roomy for European standard and in a nice neighbourhood few minutes from the closest subway station and 5 minutes walking distance from Vatican Museums and St. Peter Square/Basilica. I hope that Le Finestre sul Vaticano B&B will be included in future guide books, which by the way, were invaluable, including the day tour of Tivoli. Recently my wife and I spent several days visiting Orvieto. We stayed at the Ripa Medici B&B and had a wonderful experience. Its location is perfect: up on the hill, just inside the old city, and only a few minutes walk from the center of town, but with splendid vistas from the windows looking out over of the Umbrian countryside below. The quarters – two bedrooms at opposite ends of the apartment, with private baths and shared kitchen and dining room – are clean, bright, and entirely comfortable. Best of all, the proprietress, Sabrina, is the very soul of Italian warmth and friendliness. She helped us with our car rental, offered exellent suggestions of places to see in and near Orvieto, directed us to good restaurants, and cooked delicious breakfasts each morning of our stay. As if this were not enough, she speaks English quite well, and her two children, Marco and Chiara, are adorable. It was the best part of our Italian vacation.

Amsterdam, Bruges and Paris
One old favorite in Bruges, one maybe new favorite in Amsterdam. First, Bruges: Annemie at the Detliens B&B in Bruges has a stellar place, at a stellar price, with stellar service and a nice art and object collection, to boot. Really, just amazing, but anyone looking further down this board will know this already.
Amsterdam: Amsterdam City B&B. First, price... 80E/night. Second, host: Martin. Extremely nice, very knowledgeable, amazing breakfast. For us two, Martin made us an HB egg (perfect, and the good omega 3 eggs), 2 croissants, 4 rolls, coldcuts, brie, yogurts, jams, chocolates, coffee, tea, fresh squeezed orange juice. Comfy bed. Wine at check in, mineral water every day. And just very very nice service.
We also had a nice time at the Hotel du 7eme Art (which is film, apparently), but it's not a B&B, and they were nice, but not heroic. Great location with wonderful food stores and restaurants, quick walk to L'As du Falafel. Small bathroom, by European standards. Nice room though.

She helped us as we practiced our Italian, and made sure we had everything we needed. I looked forward each morning to the most delicious brioche con crema, a delightful croissant filled with a creamy custard; there was also bread, yogurt, etc - very filling. The B&B is in a great location; near the Duomo, a supermarket, the post office - Graziella gave us a map and showed us where everything was. CAMBRIDGE: Jim says I should add Finch's B&B to heroics...only because they were. And wonderful hosts. This brings up the question, when does a day trip become a forced march? We must disagree with RS that Cambridge (or Oxford) can be enjoyed in a day, can be done, but not enjoyed. Stay a night or so; we chose from Britain's Trip Advisor web site, Finch's. It's a little outside of town, but on a bus line; out of town also means quiet...very nice in a student town. Jane and Nigel were superb. The morning we were to leave. I wasn't feeling well. They let us stay longer in our room, even though they had a guest on his way to take it over. They had great suggestions; Nigel even gave us a lift into town twice, although I don't say that's part of the deal. The rooms, the hosts were simply delightful.

When we arrived Les took one look at our laundry bag and said they have a relationship with a local laundry who pick up and deliver! It took all our moral strength not to shower her with big slobbery American kisses. Even more importantly, if that's possible, they know Everything about York. Laimer Hof Hotel: Munich
We were three days at the Laimer Hof in Munich, and hope to return. Sebastian, as many have noted, was a wonderful host. He drove my wife to the hospital after she fell and sprained her ankle (while we were visiting the Olympic Village), and could not have been more accommodating. We feel we have new friends after staying there. Sebastian, his wife, Alexandra, and their professional employee, Simone, are just terrific.
Our corner room (#25) on the second floor (third for Americans) was bright and airy, always clean, and most comfy.
When we were leaving, we had to cancel that night's lodging in Salzburg due to my wife's injury. Sebastian graciously called the hotel and did all he could to assure us that we would not be billed for that night. Apparently a very typical trait – doing all he can for his guests.
I did not mention the quiet residential neighborhood, but it is a pleasure. Il Golf, the oft-mentioned Italian restaurant, though closed Saturday, is a fine and popular neighborhood place.

The problem is that there is too much to see - That`s why we looked at a few days to chill out.
After hectic days spent in Rome and Venice, arriving at Casa Portagioia in Tuscany was just what we needed. The hosts gave us the warmest of welcomes and our rooms were more than we could have wished for – comfort and attention to the smallest of detail. The gardens and grounds beautiful- it must have looked wonderful when the lavender was in full bloom – but what we had was perfect.
We experienced Marcello's culinary evenings – five courses and each every bit as good as people have written. Their Tuscan wine list includes some of the 'best wines in the world' as well as some great local wines.
Relaxing by their fabulous pool made it difficult to think about much else, but we managed a couple of day trips to Montepulciano and Assisi and an evening in Cortona and Arezzo.

Sinaia Romania Floare de Colt
Sinaia, Romania Floare de Colt Sinaia-a wonderful skiing/hiking area not too far from Bucharest, with its own cultural attractions as well(Peles Castle etc). One of best stays ever! Our hostess made homemade apple strudel for us, and lovely berry tea made with ingredients she picks in the mountains. She even took us 'mushrooming' one day in the forest. The pensione was built by her grandfather early in last century. High on hill, the views are great, but the conversation with your hostess is even more a treat! Enjoy!

Il Villino B & B in Florence, Italy
Il Villino in Florence, Italy is my new favorite place to stay! I have stayed in 4 & 5 star hotels on my previous six trips to Florence---but from this day forward I will always stay at Il Villino. Conveniently located near the Duomo and the Academia, it is still far enough from the noise of the central district to be totally quiet. Sergio & his wife Elisabetta will be sure that you have a fabulous experience in Florence and will bend over backward to help you with recommendations for dining, shopping and other local points of interest. The rooms are spacious & spotlessly clean with large bathrooms, a minibar and television. A great value!!

Great B&B in Rome
I cannot recommend Nicholas Inn enough. We had a great stay in Rome. From our emails to all of our questions once we arrived they were so helpful. We were on a tight budget due to the weak dollar but they had plenty of tips to help us stay on track. It's right by the Coliseum & the Forum in the center. We loved the location! Free wi-fi was effect. http://www.nicolasinn.com

Corte Campana B&B in Venice
Ricardo at the Corte Campana in Venice went beyond the call of duty to make our stay a more enjoyable one in Venice. He gave us a better map of Venice pointing out terrific restaurants & quicker modes of travel. And when we bought too much stuff, he even mailed a package back to the USA for us. The accomodations were almost Royal. The bedroom was huge. We would definitely go back again.

Straven Guest House, Edinburgh
What a perfect place to stay! The Straven Guest House is just a quick bus ride outside the hustle and bustle of the city of Edinburgh; close enough to be convienient but far enough away to relax. Owners Mac & Marian are sooooo friendly and accomodating. They gave excellent sightseeing advice and were very helpful. They also were kind enough to adjust their menu to meet some specific dietary requirements our family faced. The food was absolutely amazing! The entire guest house is spotlessly clean. We enjoyed their hospitality so much! Straven is a lovely location, very reasonable price, wonderful food, comfortable and very clean. In short, it was perfect! We were there over the last bit of Dec 08 into Jan 09. We traveled with our teenager, and noticed that ages of most guests ranged from 20's to 60's while we were there; it's a great place for ANYONE!

A book reviewer once said reading Peter Carey is like 'being shot by a firing squad of cupids' - I think this could easily apply to Koen and Annemies B&B. The experience is magical. Brugge is an experience onto itself - a fairytale city with a incredibly friendly atmosphere. However, this can only be matched by the experience of staying at Koen & Annemie Dieltiens-Debruyne (http://www.bedandbreakfastbruges.be/).

Last May I stayed at Charlie Grant's B&B, Warwick House, in Moreton-in-Marsh in the Cotswolds and it was a wonderful experience. My room was charming and very reasonably priced. Charlie and his wife treated me like family. The location was superb for getting around using public transportation. I went hiking with some of the other guests. I would definitely stay there again!

Last fall we stayed here (www.tuscanbreaks.com) for our 3rd time. It is the BEST B&B! Terry and Marcello put themselves out to provide you with the best! The setting is in the valley of di chino foothills near Cortona, Florence and Siena. Their breakfasts are outstanding, with fresh fruits, rolls, eggs to order and the best hot chocolate! Hopefully you will be lucky to be there when they serve one of their candlelit meals. They are also helpful with your itinerary and will even make reservations for you. We hope to return again this fall.

Girlfriend getaway in Tuscany - Dolce Toscana
If you want a great location to call home base for your exploration of Tuscany, I highly recommend Dolce Toscana 5 minutes outside of Montescudaio and right in the heart of Italy's wine region and many medieval hill towns. My childhood girlfriend and I stayed at Dolce Toscana for 3 nights and plan to return again in the near future for a much longer stay. 30 minutes from the Pisa airport, it was easy to get to and we were excited to discover how much of this region we could see within an hour or two in any direction. The hill village of Volterra is a must see! This being our first trip to Italy, we were somewhat hesitant about renting a car because of all of the warnings we had read but found driving in Tuscany to be much like it is in the states understanding that they do drive faster. You cannot enjoy this region without your own transportation. Dolce Toscana is an 18th century villa located on a crest of 5 acres of olive trees over looking vineyards, fruit trees and a stunning view of the Cecina River valley. Our 2 bedroom apartment (Nespola) had the best bathroom of our entire 10 day trip through Italy and was quiet, clean and cozy. The rates are reasonable and for 5 euro a day a basket of local breakfast foods was waiting outside our door each morning to get us started and on our way. Our host Silvia Harris who speaks Italian, French, Portuguese, Spanish and English has poured her heart and soul into Dolce Toscana and it shows. She left the U.S. to realize her dream of owning an Inn in Tuscany and to share this most beautiful place. www.dolce-toscana.com.

GREAT B&B IN ROME ITALY- Le Finestre sul Vaticano B&B
My boyfriend and I stayed here for a long weekend last week and were so very pleased with it. I am writing a review here for the first time ever! When I booked a cheap flight for us to go to Rome I set about looking for a nice hotel and was stunned at how expensive the mid- range hotels are. When I found Le Finestre sul Vaticano B&B I thought it looked really nice and was very hopeful it would look as it does in the pictures. No disappointment when we arrived - it was exactly as it looks in the pics! Our room was clean, SPOTLESSLY clean and it was cleaned every day too. The sitting area is very comfortable with red leather sofas and well decorated with modern paints and there are many books and guides available for guests to read. Lavinia was fantastic - as her little baby boy Lucio - the most warm welcoming helpful person … she also assists with any travel plans or ideas. We had a delicious continental with far more than you can eat and great espresso. Great location - very central to everything and you can walk or take the subway to reach every corner of Rome. It's located in a very safe area and very close to the Vatican and Sistine Chapel (Vatican Museums) and 2 minutes walking from closest subway station. I travel extensively with my work and have stayed in some of the best hotels around the world but would have no hesitation in highly recommending this place to anyone who asks. All in all it's like staying with friends in Rome, a very pleasurable experience. STAY HERE Le Finestre sul Vaticano B&B – www.romabandb.it !!! Thanks Lavinia and a big kiss to sweet Lucio!

Podere Pescia -- Umbria, Italy
located right next to the charming hill town of Castiglione del Lago, Podere Pescia is a meticulously, lovingly restored farmhouse that simply oozes Italian hospitality. Giancarlo, who has restored many properties in the area, clearly loves his home and bringing old buildings back to life -- he does do side work as a realtor, but mainly because his extensive knowledge of the area & his skill in restorations uniquely qualifies him to help house hunters. Podere Pescia is indeed gorgeous, and the attention to detail is superb. more importantly, it is an incredibly comfortable B&B, with modern bathrooms, nice beds, lovely furnishings, and even a tea service in every room. the breakfast is a generous European-style one, and sometimes Ursula (Giancarlo's wife) will even put out a homemade cake. Giancarlo speaks excellent English, gives great restaurant recommendations (and can even swing you discounts), and is full of information about exploring Umbria and nearby Tuscany. Podere Pescia is ideally located for these adventures; most of the best hill towns to see are an easy drive from there. our week-long stay there was marvelous in every way; that region of Italy is jaw-droppingly beautiful, and the hospitality we experienced here made our visit feel like we really did experience the best Italy had to offer.

It's Really Rome
After reading a dissertation of another Il Colle degli Ulivi fan, we booked a three night stay for our honeymoon in October of 2008. Although we are not as eloquent as some, we were nonetheless compelled to post another rave review. We were looking for accommodations that would give us a true Italia experience; our stay at Il Colle went above and beyond our expectations. Ivano and Terhi were such gracious and accommodating hosts. They were so flexible and understanding of unforeseen changes in our itinerary, inclimate weather, and a minor incident with a "lost" money belt. With 1 hours notice, Ivano adjusted the head count for dinner for us with no problem. We were so glad- it was a divine meal. The olives, olive oil and sundried tomatoes were absolutely scrumptious. Anything since has been disappointing when compared to their home grown / hand made delicacies. Our room was perfect; clean and private! Il Colle is the perfect location for visiting Rome- close enough but also far enough away from the chaotic hussle and bussle of the huge city. A quick train ride and you can enjoy the countryside and the city! We got rained out for some of the sights in Rome and we can't wait to go back…..to Il Colle!

Orchid Corner- Meta di Sorrento
We stayed three nights at the Orchid Corner on our honeymoon in October of 2008. It was everything we had hoped for to experience true ambiance and hospitality of Italia. Carmela and Antonino were so warm and cordial from the second we met them. Upon learning that it was our honeymoon, Carmela quickly found a chilled bottle of champagne for us to celebrate. The accommodations were fabulous! From the garden courtyard, to sound of the church bells, our stay at Orchid Corner was one of our fondest on our trip. Our room was spotless and so clean that it smelled of bleach. As a registered nurse, I am always keenly aware of cleanliness. Orchid Corner was so clean I even walked in my bare feet around our room! It was a perfect and romantic get away that is close enough to the Amalfi Coast's attractions like Pompeii and Sorrento but with all the charm of a small town for the true Italia experience. Antonino makes a fabulous breakfast too! As we are reviewing the tons of pictures we took, I think back to our lovely stay. I am compelled even three months later to sing praises of this fabulous B&B. http://www.orchidcorner.net/en/

Another Corte Campana Fan- Venice
We stayed for two delightful nights with Riccardo in October 2008. All the rave reviews really were true to their word. Riccardo is a vivacious Venetian who embodies all the hospitality of Italia. He made our stay one of our favorites over our three week trip. Although it can be a little hard to find in the dark, when you're tired, it is WELL worth the trek! The ambiance of Corte Campana is exactly what you imagine it would be- the history of this beautiful city abounds from the door knockers to the furnishings. Riccardo reviewed our sight seeing plans and really maximized our short trip to the fullest! We had an absolutely fabulous time and even three months after our stay, we are still compelled to write a rave review! http://www.cortecampana.com

Casa Rovai Florence
Stayed here for 90 euros on Christmas Eve. Was the only soul there. LOVED the place. Exterior might put some folks off but once you enter the door and climb the 3 flights of stairs you are in a fabulously charming B & B. Bathrooms fully updated, large clean rooms, excellent breakfast and Arianna who runs the place speaks perfect English and is a gracious hostess. Located near the Church of Santa Croce and easy to get to from the Santa Maria Novella station. Highly recommend it.

HALLSTATT, AUSTRIA Helga Lenz Zimmer delighted us on our visit to Europe a few years ago, and viewing a recent posting reminded me of how wonderful it was. It is well worth the walk up the hill if you like "a clean, well-lighted place" with a great view, nice breakfasts, and a kind hostess. We travelled with 2 elementary-age children (9 & 11) and this was the perfect place for us from which to enjoy the salt mine tour and slides, a nice hike, and great food in town.

Stratford upon avon: Amazing B&B - Moonraker House
Moonraker House is a charming B&B in stratford upon avon where we spent three memorable days during our trip to england. The hosts were really nice and friendly people. They gave me a warm welcome (literally with a warm cup of tea). The room was fabulous - I specially booked the one with the four poster bed. It was good size, clean and very nicely decorated. Morris was really helpful in assisting us in planning our trip and in the end even dropped us back at the railway station. Last but not least the breakfast he served was fantastic - had three different types of breakfast over the three days we were there. Location wise it was really convenient and we walked to most places - mostly shakespeare stuff and saw a theatre play - all highly recommended. All in all, the best place we stayed at in england on our entire month long trip.

B&B Budapest, Hungary
B&B Bellevue, Budapest, Hungary. Late November 2008 my husband and I returned from Central Europe. We loved Budapest which is one of the most beautiful cities. We highly recommend staying at B&B Bellevue on the Buda side with its spectacular views of Buda Castle. This five room B&B, located in a safe and lovely neighborhood, is affordable, very clean with comfortable furnishings. Owners Judit and Lajos Szuhay were attentive hosts. Judit will arrange for a taxi pick up at the train station or airport. They serve a nice breakfast, provide maps, directions and information on cultural events. Bus #16 stops close by and will whisk you up to the top of Castle Hill. A short down hill walk to Batthyány ter Metro Station takes about 10minutes. If you stay here, plan wisely and use the buses, you can maneuver around with ease. Bus Tip: Bus #86 stops on Fo utca, in front of the Batthyány Market Hall and across from Batthyány ter Metro, and connects to Bus #16 at Clark Adam ter. Bus #16 is a short, uphill and quick ride so push the stop button as the bus leaves Clark Adam ter. Exit the first bus stop called Donati utca, where Hunyadi Janos ut and Donati utca intersects. Walk straight for about two blocks on Hunyadi Janos ut, as it forks into two, keep to your right and continue walking on Szabo Ilonka utca to B&B Bellevue. We enjoyed our stay so much we are planning a return visit to Budapest and B&B Bellevue during Christmas 2009. B&B Bellevue (Bellevue Panzio) is located on Szabo Ilonka utca 15/B, Budapest, I. Kerulet, website: www.bellevuebudapest.com Staying on the Buda side was very convenient and delightful.
