Heroic B&B Friendliness: 2012
European bed and breakfast hosts and hostesses are notorious for confounding travelers with inexplicable kindness. Share tales of B&B hosts who went above and beyond the call of touristic duty to give you a great trip.
Note: This board is for tips about great European B&Bs (not hotels). If there are multiple comments on the same place, we will delete repetitious posts. Comments about more traditional hotels should be posted in the appropriate Rick Steves guidebook forum. For specific lodging recommendations, please refer to Rick's guidebooks, and read his tips on planning your trip.
If you have a complaint about a B&B in one of Rick's books that you could not resolve with the management, we would like to hear about it; however, please do not express your misgivings here. Instead, feel free to comment in the appropriate Rick Steves guidebook forum.

Frau Weiss made us feel like royalty! We had a very comfortable room, an outstanding breakfast, and her personal service each day. The old town wall was a very short walk along a path that starts right across from her house. Perfect! Contact her at email@example.com

Guest House Lida
Seen some good reviews here for Guest House Lida in Prague and wanted to add my own. It's absolutely fantastic. Rick has never steered us wrong on accommodations, but GH Lida is, hands down, the best. Jan and family really, really take care of you, on top of having great rooms. Can't recommend it highly enough.

Best gluten free B&B I've ever stayed at
This is the place to be for all the gluten free intolerant who know what it means having to constantly check the food you are served. I have picked My Guest Roma carefully. I was immediately conquered by their customer service. My e-mails were answered within minutes, even after I had already secured the room. For months, Gioia and Stefano helped me finalize the smallest details of my trip such as finding a gluten free bed and breakfast in Florence, restaurants, trains. My expectations were fulfilled. The room looked exactly as on their website, so did the breakfast room with its marble garments on the wall.
Breakfast was incredibly rich, nothing comparable to what I was ever served in other bed and breakfasts or even at a 3-star hotel. Not just with regard to the gluten free variant my daughter had ordered.
For instance, hot drinks were prepared in a professional machine which had some 15 options of drinks (from the chocolate milk based to the water based one, to the mocha, the espresso, black coffee, cappuccino, or light cappuccino). There were 5 -6 kinds of juices, pastries, cereals, cheeses, seasonal fruits, yogurts. My daughter was offered everyday a different dish with a variety of salted/sweet croissants, cookies, rice bread, cereals or crackers....all gluten free, and all served by Stefano himself. Nothing was ever too much of an issue. Once we were late at breakfast , but Stefano insisted we would sit and take our time. He responded to every request with a smile. Actually, things didn't even have to be mentioned. For instance, we were helped with our luggage upon arrival and were offered to leave it a secure place upon departure. We particularly appreciated such a service as we felt it to be safe, not being accessible to other customers at all.
The staff personally delivers cases from and to it. With no hesitation I consider My Guest Rome the best gluten free B&b I have ever stayed at WWW.MYGUESTROMA.COM

Ripa Medici, Orvieto Italy
Ripa Medici B&B in Orvieto is a must stay!Sabrina is the perfect hostess and the breakfast is delicious. Sabrina goes out of her way to make sure you're settled in and is always available for questions or recommendations to restaurants or sightseeing. The "room" is actually in a 2 bed/2 bath apartment across the street from Sabrina's house. The living room and kitchen are common areas for both bedrooms to use. There is a washer and clothesline in one of the bathrooms. The view is amazing! Parking and wi-fi are included in the very reasonable price.

B &B on Lake Como, Varenna Italy
We recently traveled northern Italy for 3 weeks and stayed 2 nights in Varenna on Lake Como. We arrived with no reservations and happened upon a great B &B that was recently acquired by Simone and Silvia Deghi. They are the new owners of Divina Vita B & B and Bar il Molo in Varenna. Simone showed us his room which was a roomy apartment with a small kitchen, a spiral staircase to a queen bed and single bed loft and a queen sofa bed on the main floor. It was wonderful, balcony and all. Immediately Simone welcomed us with an offer of something to drink and snacks on their beautiful outdoor seating patio right on the lake. Simone went over what services he would be happy to help us with. He gave us recommendations of sights with maps, found the best routes for our next destination, called ahead to find accommodations, they made sure we had umbrellas for our outings with rainy weather. Both Silvia and Simone were gracious and so helpful. They also own the restaurant next to the bed and breakfast so our breakfast was absolutely first class. Fresh squeezed orange juice and all. All in all it was one of the best accommodations we had on our entire trip. All for 90 Euros a night. I would highly recommend it. You can reach Simone and Sivia at firstname.lastname@example.org

Butterfly Home, Budapest
I had a wonderful experience during my recent stay at the Butterfly Home B&B in Budapest. Agi and Tonci were the perfect hosts. Our room was spacious and comfortable and the breakfast, excellent!!! We enjoyed a variety of breads, muffins, meats, cheeses and freshly squeezed orange juice as well as cappuccino!!! A nice touch was two bottles of water in our refrigerator upon our arrival. The location was perfect; in a safe area and close to all the sights we wanted to see. Budapest was our last stop on our trip and because we had an early flight home, Agi and Tonci offered to provide us breakfast in our room. When we got to our room that night, we found muffins, bread, fruit and coffee makings along with yogurt and orange juice in the refrigerator. They had gone above and beyond. Thank you Agi and Tonci for a wonderful stay in Budapest.

Arcadia Residence, Prague
What an amazing find. When I walked through the doors of our room at the Arcadia Residence in Prague, I instantly felt like I was at home. Our accommodations were very spacious and we had so much room and closet space that we immediately unpacked and made ourselves at home. Pasquale was an amazing host. He asked us to settle in and then return to his office for a brief tour of the surrounding area. He familiarized us with landmarks, making it easy to find our way "home." Each morning we enjoyed breakfast served at our very own dining room table by two wonderful ladies. The location was perfect; close to major sites and tasty restaurants. I can't say enough wonderful things about Pasquale and the Arcadia Residence. We availed ourselves of the transportation to and from the train station that was also arranged by Pasquale. That was a big plus for us. Thank you Pasquale for a wonderful stay and I hope to return one day to Prague and the Arcadia Residence.

Exceptional B&B in Northern Portugal
My wife and I have just completed the unique experience of walking the Camino de Santiago, "the Portuguese Way", from Porto, Portugal, to Santiago de Compostela, Spain. We took thirteen days to walk the 230 km distance with a break in the middle for a needed rest of two nights in Tui, Spain. This was our second Camino, having done the shorter French route from Sarria to Santiago in September, 2010.
Not being "spring chickens" any more-I'm 73 and my wife is 66- we opted not to follow the traditional practice of staying in albergues or hostels along the way. Since we are not speedy walkers and most other peregrinos would pass us by during the day, we didn't want to arrive at our destination each day and find "no room at the inn".
With that in mind we contacted Camino Travel Center, who we used in 2010, and had them plan an itinerary of hotels and B&B's along the route. The Portuguese route is not as popular as the French route. CTC did an excellent job with the limited [INVALID]ion of choices along the way that wouldn't exceed our target of 22 km per day.
The one place we stayed that stands out well above the others and is to me a "Rick Steves" kind of place. That is Casas do Rio! It is located near Cossourado, just a short distance from Braga, Ponte de Lima, and Barcelos. The property is a beautifully remodeled farm of about 10 acres. They have [INVALID]d a park-like setting. A huge lawn area with a nice pool (which felt great after six hours walking in 90 degree heat). Lots of apple, fig, lemon, pear, quince, and kiwi trees were throughout the property and guest were free to pick the ripe fruit. They have a large organic vegetable garden and many chickens, ducks, geese and other farm animals. The many tasty choices we had for breakfast were made from these home grown, organic items. Cristina uses a wood-burning oven to bake all of her cakes and breads...delicious!
The owners, Jose and Cristina and their three teenaged children, live on site. They are the nicest, most hospitable, and caring people you could ever meet. On our arrival, they invited us sit down at an outdoor table under the cool shade of an umbrella and served us a complimentary snacks and cold drinks. Later that evening they suggested several restaurants with different menus in the area, then made reservations for us, drove us to our restaurant choice, and returned to pick us up when we finished. What service!
All this for 70 euros per night. Their web site is www.casasdoriobarcelos.com and we highly recommend staying there if you are in northern Portugal. You will not be disappointed!

Il Puerto di Lucca B&B Excellent, more like a boutique hotel then B&B. Breakfasts are fruit, eggs, breads, cheese, caffee and more. The hosts Giovanna and Francesco are like family, only more pleasant. Today, after having fallen off a bike yesterday, they have waited on me hand and foot in bed, with breakfast and dinner, none of which they had to do. I highly recommend this for any travelers (not the fall, just the B&B). Il Porto is in a villa from 1700's with incredible period furniture and artwork. It is 1 block from the train station, less then 200 meters from the old wall. They change linens every day and are more then accomodating, providing bikes, an incredible library and basically whatever you'd need for a wonderful visit. Giovanna drove me to several small towns to help me research records on my ancestors. I can't say enough about these hosts who run this B&B.

Le Belvedere/Paris, via Good Morning Paris
B&B's, yay! Hotels, boo! Our week at Le Belvedere in Paris with hosts Mariette and Mihai Todea (email@example.com) featured fresh-caught pastries, homemade yogurt and jams for breakfast; lots of needed help with what to see and how to get there; translation of obscure statuary lingo; and explanation of our peculiar luggage needs to the cab company; and perhaps best: friendly faces at the end of a long, hot day of touristing. To name but a few. Bonus: five-minutes walk from a beautiful park or a canal where the locals and their dogs hang out--very "Back Door." It was one of several B&B's described and depicted satisfying our wishes (elevator, non-touristy neighborhood, price range) by the Rick-cited Good Morning Paris (www.goodmorningparis.fr) and picked at random by us. Gastehaus Richter, Oberammergau Germany
Our three day stay at Paula Richter's Gastehaus was the best lodging of our entire three week European trip. Paula served an amazing variety of fresh foods at her breakfast buffet. She even had smoked salmon, stuffed mushrooms, homemade apple sauce and jams, in addition to locally made cheeses, meats, breads, etc. Our room was quiet, clean, spacious and comfy. Paul herself welcomed us when we arrived at 9 pm with a cup of hot tea, chatted with us during breakfast as she made sure we lacked for nothing, and waved good-by from the door when we left. We felt more like family friends than paying guests. (By the way Oberammergau is a good place to headquarter when seeing "Mad" Ludwig's 3 castles. )

Argegno, Italy - Paul Wright Bed and Breakfast
My wife and I just returned from a 2-month, Rick Steves-inspired tour of Europe. We scheduled a week near the back-end for a "vacation from a vacation." We couldn't have chosen a better place than Argegno, a village on the west bank of beautiful Lake Como in northern Italy. Nor do I think we could have chosen better than the Paul Wright Bed and Breakfast in Argegno.
We were mesmerized by the marvelous view of Lake Como from our perfectly-situated balcony. The bedsit (efficiency apartment) was a perfect size for vacationers, with a good size bed and plenty of storage to fully unpack. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to prepare our meals. Paul's place is a true, English-style bed and breakfast, however, so you don't need to prepare all of your meals, since the package includes a proper breakfast, which Paul delivers promptly to your door every morning on a tray covered with fresh table linens.
Paul is an excellent host, an artist born and raised in Britain, but, with his wife Nicole, a resident of the Lake Como area for the last 20+ years. He is very knowledgeable about the area and very willing to help. He's likeable and an excellent conversationalist too, if you just want someone to talk to. He kept our place spotless and even made sure we had enough milk and butter in the refrigerator.

I am writing a much overdue recommendation for L'Ecole Buissonniere Chambres near Viason la Romaine. My husband and I stayed here for 5 nights last October. This is a lovely B&B with outstanding hosts. Our room was delightful and the outdoor patio (complete with picnic area and frig for guests) made for easy picnic meals in the evening when we didn't want to eat out. John helped us with our daily itineraries and shared stories over a glass of wine. Breakfasts were delicious including homemade jam. I heartily recommend this B&B to anyone traveling in the area.

We arrived in Galway on 7/16 and had a wonderful stay at the Ardawn House B & B. Breda and Mike Guilfoyle, the B & B owners were so warm and welcoming. We had several conversations with Breda and she has such a great sense of humor. They were extremely knowlegable about Galway and were really helpful in giving us suggestions and directions. Our room was on the top floor and it was a real hoot for us to look out of our window and see the Dog Track. Also - and this was a bonus - we got to see a Rugby academy working out every morning on the infield of the dog track. It was fun to watch how they practiced and see the fun, determination and comaraderie that they seemd to be having. An unexpected, extra special touch of Ireland. Our room was great and most comfortable. The food that Mike and Breda prepared was excellent and the choices most pleasant.

Borgo Argenina - An Incredible B&B in Tuscany
In celebration of his upcoming 60th birthday, my partner and I spent five weeks touring Europe this past June. All five weeks were wonderful, but without question or a moment of hesitation, I can say the most special was our week in Tuscany at the wonderful Borgo Argenina B & B. We learned of Borgo Argenina thru Rick Steves, author of "Rick Steves' Florence and Tuscany 2006." Rick had featured Borgo Argenina in his list of recommended places to stay in Tuscany and had described its owner and hostess, Elena Nappa, as "helpful." Indeed, Rick was accurate by saying helpful, but in all honesty, after being a guest at Borgo Argenina for six nights, "helpful" is accurate but barely adequate. So much more could be said of Elena.
Elena, once a successful fashion designer in Milan, made the decision some 20 years ago to leave the fashion business and pursue a dream of hers. That dream, the restoration of a medieval hamlet in ruins, located just 12 miles outside Sienna, Italy, and the creation of Borgo Argenina B&B. The results of her dream, hard work, incredible talent and taste, now stand as a most wonderful and beautiful B&B where she welcomes guests and devotes herself to a Tuscan lifestyle. In making certain that the Tuscan lifestyle and experience is shared with each guest Elena provides a map, actually an artistic and beautiful hand drawn map of Tuscany, on which she provides suggested excursions, places to see, as well as restaurants to enjoy along the way. Elena spent time explaining the surrounding area, and encouraging us to take our time, to relax and enjoy Tuscany as it is meant to be. Her message, "To smell the roses along the way." In Tuscany, that means, beautiful views for as far as the eye can see, rolling hills of green, brown, and gold, farmhouses, hamlets, and castles, incredible restaurants and delicious food, vino and still more vino, fields of sunflowers, olive trees, Italian cypress trees, both aligning long driveways and sporadically dotting hillsides, warm beautiful sunshine.
Indeed, in Tuscany, there is so much to enjoy and Elena encourages each guest to do just that! She and her staff serve a delicious breakfast in a perfectly charming and beautifully decorated breakfast room. Every second or third night, Elena prepares dinner and offers guests the option of joining her for a home cooked Tuscan meal. We enjoyed so many delicious meals in Tuscany,(thanks to her recommendations) but two of the best and most enjoyable were the dinners we had in her kitchen, alongside her and eight other guests. The accommodations are most comfortable, well-appointed, and beautifully furnished. The ground level offers three large comfortable living room spaces, incredible views, even wireless access! Beautiful Tuscan views from every window. Elena's heart and soul exist in all that she does, that is ever evident. Her special love of Tuscany, alongside her warmth and hospitality made our time in Tuscany exceptional and forever memorable. Our warm and very special thanks to a most exceptional hostess.

Panella's Residence is charming and well-located. Our hostess, Graziella Panella, was so helpful, warm and fun! She offered great advice about local restaurants, events and gelato. She also spent lots of time over morning coffee helping my husband with his new passion, the Italian language. I can't think of a more charming B & B than Panella's or a more thoughtful hostess than Graziella. By the way, the rooms are clean, well appointed and comfortable. I could go on and on, but I suggest you visit Florence and discover Panella's for yourself.

Rathellen House, Bansha, Ireland
We spent a week at Rathellen House in Bansha, Ireland near Tipperary. Stella and Eamonn Long are the perfect hosts for this lovely bed and breakfast. They rent rooms by the night as well as renting the whole house (7 bedrooms and 7 bathrooms) for a large group like ours. The house is beautiful and furnished with everything you could need to make your stay comfortable. Stella and Eamonn were extremely helpful both before and during our trip. This help included planning a day trip to the Dingle peninsula for 14 of us in our group – arranging a bus, planning the day, and even helping with restaurant selections and reservations. Eamonn is a trained chef and the breakfast he provided was outstanding. Rathellen House is centrally located for touring southwestern Ireland. While there, members of our family visited Kinsale, Lismore, Waterford, Cashel, Cahir, Adare, and Dingle. We give Rathellen House and Stella and Eamonn Long our highest recommendation. We hope to return some day.

Residenza Il Villino, Florence, Italy
The Residenza Il Villino was a perfect lodging spot for us during our first visit to Florence. After experiencing the relief of dropping off a rental car that had carried us from Rome to several destinations in Tuscany, we took a taxi from the car rental office to the old town section of Florence and the Residenza Il Villlino. Our host Sergio and his son, Lorenzo, welcomed us upon arrival and showed us to our room, which was clean, bright, and comfortable with a partial view of the famous Dome through one of our windows.
A delicious full breakfast, tended by Sergio and his wife, was served in the outdoor courtyard area each morning from 8:00 to 10:00. Throughout our three-day stay, Sergio was warm, friendly and knowledgeable about everything from making dinner reservations to helping us with our very early (4:30 am!) airport transfer on our last morning in Florence. The lodging's location was perfect for walking to practically all the major attractions in a city filled with major attractions: the Duomo, the Ponte Vecchio, the Uffizi, the Accademia. We certainly hope to include Residenza Il Villino in our plans for a second visit to Florence.

French Pyrenees, D'Ossau Valley. L'arrajou
I highly recommend this bed and breakfast. It is in Bilheres, just north of Laruns, and has easy access to the Pyrenees park. In June, the views of the green mountains and Pyrenees just beyond were even more stunning than shown on their website. The owner Veronique was very gracious and helpful. She speaks English. The breakfasts were wonderful, especially the cups of coffee served in (generous-size) bowls, a custom I could get used to. There is wifi and a beautiful common room for guests with a full kitchen and large dining table.

We stayed 2 nights at the Merchant's House and had a lovely time. The room was big, with plenty of places to sit, books to browse, a comfortable bed and lovely art. The wifi barely worked in our room but no problem in the grand sitting room. Breakfast was great, homemade yogurt and stewed fruits. We met other Irish travelers in town for the North Atlantic Fiddler Convention, who encouraged us to attend and we were glad they did. It was fantastic. Everyone at the Merchant's House helped make everything run smoothly. Highly recommended.

ISLE OF SKYE, SCOTLAND–Grasmhor Bed & Breakfast
We spent 2 wonderful nights at Grasmhor on our trip round Scotland. This is a lovely house in the middle of the island, away from it all, with amazing sunset views. Our room was wonderful, spacious, modern, stylish with everything we wanted. Tim took our breakfast orders the night before and was gracious, both as our chef and our advisor. His recommendations for the seal boat tour, where to eat in Porttree, the best circuit around Skye, and through the Highlands made our trip even more special. And his photographs of Skye, stunning. Highly recommended.

EDINBURGH--AmarAgua Guest House
Staying at AmarAgua was one of the highlights of our trips. We adored our room, which was spacious, beautifully designed and had lovely large windows. The bed, the coffee service, the little touches like towel warmers, made for two lovely nights. And our breakfast was amazing! DawnAnn and Tony truly made us feel at home, sharing ideas for sightseeing and traveling around Edinburgh, where to eat, what to see, how to drive out of the city and best ways to soft-boil eggs! Outstanding. We will be back.

A B&B Extravaganza!
I just returned from a three week trip with my two teenage boys. Wow! What a trip.. (no pun that much intended.) First, thank you all for your awesome trip tips and info. So, in return and in order of appearance, I highly recommend all of these B&B's... LONDON: please check out Arran House at 77-79 Gower St. Very cool building, great staff, clean rooms, great location, and wonderful breakfast. What a respite from the fast pace of the city... Oh, by the way... "Mind the gap." MONTREUIL SUR MER, FRANCE: Chambres d'hotes "Aux Ormeaux." What an incredible town! Completely walled in medieval charm. This is knee deep in the French culture and speaking French certainly helps. Ann Marie was a very gracious hostess and the B&B was a true treat. (Just make sure you are crystal clear on how to get to it.) I wish we had more time in the town. Victor Hugo did... and it helped to inspire Les Miserables. PARIS: PERFECT HOTEL probably shouldn't be in the B&B catagory, but I thought that I would mention it because it was great for us. Good price, good location (near the base of Sacre Coeur) and very convenient to the Metro. The staff was excellent and it was opened 24 hrs. which is nice when your planning goes haywire... and it will, but it is part of the fun;) GIMMEWALD, SWITZERLAND Hotel Mittaghorn. What else can be said... it's W[INVALID]s! Our host Tim was very cool and very helpful in anything that we needed. Please DO NOT MISS this Rick Steves staple of any European trip. His saying about heaven is so right on... VERNAZZA, ITALY. There's no place on earth like the Cinque Terre. This was my third visit to Vernazza and I love it more every time! This time we stayed at Rooms La Torre (www.camerelatorre.com) and it was like staying in our own apartment, condo, etc. Our gracious hostess AnnaMaria made us feel like we owned the place. We even hung out our laundry like the locals. Staying in Vernazza goes a long way in helping the local economy. DO NOT MISS dining at Bar La Torre on the trail to Corniglia. Your table will overlook the town and the sea will be crashing on the beach about five hundred feet straight below you. That's Amore! ROME: ITALY My Guest Roma. Just read all of the other posts about this place and you'll get the idea. Stefano was an "uber" host. So helpful it was like Ritz Carlton guest services. (I know, because I used to worked for the Ritz) This place was great, great! Super clean, great breakfast, perfect privacy, big showers (for Europe), even the takeout Chinese food across the street was great. Oh, a big supermarket is not far away and we picnicked on the Palatine... What a treat! SORA, ITALY Ssshhh, don't tell anyone about this area! It is near historic Monte Cassino and it is neck deep in the Italian Culture. We stayed at ItalyFarmStay and wow, what an experience! We even learned how to cook Italian food with fresh pasta most of which came directly from the organic farm. Google Italy Farm Stay for more info. The farm is... well, it's a farm. The area is like Tuscany, but without the Tuscan prices! We even explored an abandoned castle/fortress like Reinfels only smaller, no prices, and no crowds... In fact, no people except the shepherd with his flock of sheep grazing in the courtyard! The castle even came complete with an ancient fresco and actual stalactites... but you'll have to search for them. Bring a flashlight! We even picknicked on the ramparts about a thousand feet above the town of Sora. Great place to take a vacation within a vacation. BACHARACH, GERMANY. Last, but certainly not least in any way, shape, or form is Pension Lettie. Lettie is such a great, and funny hostess. It was the perfect spot to wind things up... Great breakfasts, great rooms, great privacy, great trains, great town! Oh, another DO NOT MISS Rick pick is the hike to Burg Eltz. I just got my first fantasy fiction novel published and I felt like I was actually in it! Lettie has a copy that she will loan out... lol. Finally, we trained all throughout Europe and once you get used to the culture shift, it was very cool. Just know that mandatory reservation trains cost quite a bit extra, but if you have the budget, the reserved first class seats were a nice break from the (at times) hectic lifestyle of European travel. Thank you again, and thank you Rick and his staff. Cheers!!! PD Lorenz - www.shadowscrolls.com -

Elena Nappa and her B&B in Tuscany
My wife and I recently returned from sixteen days in Italy and we had many great experiences, but when telling friends about our trip, we talk more about our time with Elena Nappa at Borgo Argenina than any other part. This special person and the wonderful place she created from the 1000 year old hamlet in the hills of Tuscany stands out. Based on comments in Rick Steves' guidebook and other information we gathered when planning the trip, I was expecting something different and special, but nothing that would compare with the reality. Almost immediately upon arriving and seeing the place and meeting Elena, I began thinking about how we might change our travel plans to spend more time there. It is a beautiful place on a hill surrounded by vineyards and more hills topped with ancient castles and tiny villages. From there, you can see for many miles and a camera pointed in any direction will capture a postcard image. The buildings were restored by Elena and her team with meticulous attention to detail that preserved the rustic design and features. They are surrounded with gardens filled with flowering plants that were just starting to bloom during our stay in May. The inside is as beautiful as the outside, both rustic and sophisticated at the same time. Being there is like being within a work of art. As special as the place is, Elena herself may be the most special and unique part of the Borgo Argenina experience. When we arrived, we were welcomed like we were family and I soon knew what she meant when she wrote earlier saying "just come and I will take care of you." She certainly did that! She spent hours with us in her kitchen telling us all about the history of the region and helping us plan our stay. We are looking forward to another visit to Borgo Argenina and more good times spent with Elena.

Great B&B stay
Just back from six weeks in the U.K. with my two daughters. We stayed in B&Bs for the most part. Great time....wanted to mention The Hollies B&B in Conwy, North Wales. The owners were so helpful with planning our day trips, recommendations for restaurants, sharing their maps, offering to drive us up the local mountain - they even picked us up and dropped us off at the train station! The location was excellent, the price was reasonable, the room was lovely and the breakfasts were great. The best B&B stay of our long trip!

Fabulous B&B near Sligo, Ireland
We had a wonderful experience staying at Temple House B&B in Ballymote, Ireland, near Sligo. It's a stunning country house estate with castle ruins, an old carriage house, a lake, and acres and acres to explore. The owners, Roderick and Helena, are two of the nicest people you could meet. They were eager to chat with us about the history of the house, the family portraits covering the walls, and advise on visiting the local attractions. They gave our visit a personal touch that made us feel like we were visiting friends.

Staying here made our trip one of the best we've ever had. Charlotte was helpful in answering our general travelers questions, but went beyond the call of duty in answering some arcane university- professor-academic questions! She even tracked down a professor at Utrecht and book references for us. And the B&B itself was outstanding in every way, from cleaniness, to food, and comfort.

The Vanessa House is situated in a lovely neighborhood of large homes on spacious lots with mature trees. Elena, the gracious hostess has converted two rooms in her home to rentals. They are immaculately clean, with large showers, and very reasonably priced. This location is in a suburb of Venice and is perfect for car travelers, but also doable by bus from Venice. The bus stop is just a two minute walk from the B&B and picks up and drops off at Piazza Roma in Venice. Breakfast is out of the ordinary for Italy. Each morning Elena bakes a special torte or cake, provides fruits of the season, homemade jams, of which pineapple, fig, cherry and marmalade were the choices the two days we visited. Breakfast is set up outside on the patio adjacent to the backyard. It was so relaxing to stay here and not have to hassle with hauling luggage up and down steps, over bridges and across cobblestones in Venice. There is gated parking on the premises. Elena speaks very good English. (www.vanessahouse.it - translate to English)

B&B in Invermoriston, Scotland
I am always hesitant to post a positive comment on RS site, as once it becomes known it is almost impossible to again visit or stay there. I highly recommend a small (3 bedroom) B&B located in Invermoriston, Scotland - very close to Loch Ness. The very friendly sisters, Lindsey and Manda are wonderful hosts, and we will go there again next year hopefully. The name of their B&B is Craik Na Dav, and they are also pet friendly - they have three West Highland Terriers in residence.

B&B Le Lys de Castelnaud, Perigord,Vézac, France
Le Lys de Castelnaud magically beautiful medieval ambiance with exuberant hosts We returned in June to this marvelous B&B, where in Sept 2010 we had spent a magical and most comfortable 5 nights at Le Lys de Castelnaud, wishing all the while we had more time . A marvelous location, exquisite views, modern facilities. Natives of Brittany and world travelers, Nathalie & Dominique Charbonnier extend the warmest of welcomes & delight in sharing with guests the culture and history of their adopted region. Immediately one has the feeling of being at home, relaxed and with old friends. She helped us with dinner reservations and all her suggestions were wonderful. At the communal breakfast table Nathalie translates, if need be, so guests may share their suggestions for touring the Perigord. Nathalie's superb command of English extends to playful speech as well lending a light-hearted spirit to this truly lovely medieval themed B & B. The furnishings suggest they were collected with a deep love of the medieval period; each piece, large or small, whether wooden chest, detail of armor, bedspread or iron candlestick is placed to create a refined castle décor.

B&Bs in Italy
We just returned from two weeks in Italy, where we stayed in four great B&Bs which we found on this site. In Rome we stayed at the Nicholas Inn on Via Cavour - lovely room, great location, most helpful and pleasant hostess. We also stayed at B&B Nona Dea, near the Vatican, which was also a charming room, helpful host and good breakfast. In Florence we stayed at the Bargello B&B, again a great location, good room and helpful hostess- although one does have to climb three flights to get to the B&B. In Venice the B&B Ponte Chiodo was delightful in all respects, and the host saved us from drowning in tourism. All in all, a wonderful trip.

Normandy Beaches - Grandcamp-Maisy
The hosts at Villa Bellevue made us feel so welcome! They helped us with clothes pins, identified local sea anemone online, and were curious about American politics. We enjoyed sitting in their lovely garden with view of ocean, and eating delicious jams, cheeses, yogurts, and breads. This town has small harbor and several good restaurants, just a short walk away. It feels less frenzied than some more famous Normandy Invasion towns. Our hosts were one of the highlights of our entire trip. Their English is limited but adequate. They had assembled a notebook full of brochures and recommendations for local sites of interest, including a nature preserve in tidal marsh area. Orange House B&B, Varenna, Italy
My husband and I stayed at the Orange House B&B from May 25 - 31, 2012. It is conveniently situated in Varenna, being close to town, ferry and train station. Mara and Piero are gracious, warm and accommodating hosts; they made us feel like family. Mara's breakfasts were delightful and delicious. Piero did everything from making dinner reservations for us to providing us with excellent suggestions and directions on things to do the area. We were very comfortable in the double bedroom on the second floor. The B&B is extremely clean and spacious. Our room was tidied up every day and clean linens were provided throughout our stay. We have had a lot of experiences with staying at B&B's over the years and we both agree that the Orange House is one of our very favorites. If you are planning a visit to the central region of Lake Como, Varenna is a quiet and serene village away from tourist congestion and crowds. I cannot say enough about our recent experience staying at the Orange House in Varenna; it's one of the highlights of our memorable trip to Italy! Today was my fifth stay at Kenvie over the last decade. Dorothy Vidler the operator handles everything with perfection and makes a traveler feel welcome and rested. Albergo Fontana, Varallo Pombia, Italy http://www.albergofontana.it and Rooms Residence Dream, Rovinj, Croatia
We were very pleased with our stay at Albergo Fontana, Varallo Pombia, Italy, 15 minutes west of Milan's Malpensa Airport. The friendly young couple managing the rooms and restaurant are energetic and enthusiastic. The simple, but well-appointed rooms were fairly new and fresh, very reasonably priced, and located above the restaurant serving great Italian food. The albergo is easily reached within 15 minutes walk from the train station. Breakfast was continental and adequate. The couple spoke little English, but they were attentive and we had no difficulty communicating. At our departure, the couple arranged van transport for us to Malpensa Airport, without our having to travel through Milan City Center, with its crowds and traffic. If we are in the area again we will stay at Albergo Fontana.
We stayed three nights at Rooms Residence Dream, Rovinj, Croatia. Rovinj is a beautiful, pristine, small harbor town and our room was half a block from the picturesque harbor. Darko and Lillian, our waiter and waitress, were very helpful to our needs. The spacious room had new wood furniture and it was above the restaurant serving gourmet food. We highly recommend the town, lodging and restaurant. It was really a "dream" fulfilled to stay here.

La Foulerie in Normandy
Our family of three visited Normandy for five days in May. Since Bayeux seemed to be filled up, we stayed at La Foulerie, a B&B about a half hour south in Cahagnes, in rural Normandy. I had never stayed in a B&B before but was looking forward to the hospitality. We arrived quite late (8PM) on a Sunday, and host Jean-Luc Tallec immediately came out to greet us. He was very friendly and speaks pretty good English. The B&B has three rooms (one for two people, one for three people, and one for five people). He put us in the room for five even though there were only three of us, for the same price.
Every morning he went to the boulangerie to get us fresh bread and croissants, and made us coffee, asking us what time we wanted breakfast. He gave us a packet of discount tickets for attractions in Calvados department. And he gave us valuable advice about some of the sights in the area; for example he advised us to visit the Mont Saint Michel early because of the changes to the access that had just gone into effect there.
Bayeux is a cute little town and I would have loved to stay there. But I especially loved the Normandy countryside with its rolling hills, tiny villages, and stone-and-timber houses. Jean-Luc and his wife Irene keep a neat and beautiful property with horses, a vegetable garden, and a flower garden with a pond. Upon departure we told them that we would definitely come back.

Outstanding Stay near Venice, Italy
When you are planning your trip to Venice, Italy or points north, th absolute best place to stay is with Maria and Claudio at their b&b in Spinea. Www.osakasamia.com. What a delight it was to leave the madness of Venice, get on the number 6 bus, and arrive in25 minutes in a sweet little town where real families live. Maria and Claudio's home in beautiful, with exceptionally comfortable beds, an immaculate and large bathroom, but most importantly, incredibly kind, wonderful, helpful, and friendly hosts. We had so much fun with them, including one evening when Maria made dinner for all of us, including her father who stops in daily. We were really part of the family. Breakfast each day was sumptuous and included disxussions of where we'd go each day and how to get there. We had reserved just four nights there, but when we realized what a gem we had found we were able to add one additional night. Also, Maria is a teacher of languages, and she patiently and expertly helped me with ,y stumbling Italian. We will never stay anywhere else when we're in Venice or the north of Italy!!

My Guest Roma-Rome B&B
My Guest Roma was an incredible beginning to our trip to Europe (end of April 2012). The rooms are so clean (and my husband and I are very much germ-aphobes and it passed our test! :)) with fresh flowers, and the hospitality unbeatable. We did not spend much time in the room but they are very spacious. Plenty of room for luggage and comfort. It is very close to the bus station, as well as the metro. We had never been to Europe before and did our research before coming (we're in late 20s-early 30s). It is a less than 5 minute walk to the buses and about a 10-15 minute ride to the Colisseum. The breakfast in the morning is very good with a lot of choices and yummy pastries. We felt as though we were staying with a close friend. Stefano took the time to go through the map with us and recommend stores and cafe shops to eat at. He was at breakfast always asking if we needed help to find anything which was so nice. There is actually a really good restaurant close to the hotel as well called Casata Merge which had the most amazing cheese/meat platter. YUM. We had the most wonderful time and will be staying here on our next trip to Rome (which we hope is sooner rather than later!) Great value, great hospitality, great everything! We were very pleased. Thank you Stefano & team! Top notch!

The breakfasts, made to order by Liz, were delicous, the guests were all very friendly and helpful and there is even a delightful glassed in guest lounge filled with Liz's orchid collection and a woodstove, also on their beautiful garden. Moreton is an excellent location with busses to Stratford Upon Avon, Boureton on the Water, Stow on the Wold and more. The train station is walking distance to Treetops, as is the town. Be sure to walk to the Batsford Falconry and the Arboretum is you visit the town.

B&B in Bath Engand
14 Raby Place is a lovely B&B in Bath England. Run by Muriel, a charming woman, the home is ful of beautiful art and sculptures. Our room was comfortable with double bed and 2 chairs, and an extremely modern bathroom with towel warmers, a lovely touch! Muriel makes full English breakfasts to order in her charming dining area with glass window to the street. We met other charming guests at breakfast each morning. There are 5 stories, so be sure to ask for lower floor if stairs are a problem. It's a short walk to town and Bath is an incredible place!

Elena at Fiorenza b&b in Florence Italy was a wonderful help in making reservations for us for museums and restaurants before our arrival. The b&b is lovely and Elena serves a selection of home baked goodies for breakfast. We found this b&b a peaceful retreat after a busy day sight seeing. Loved it!

We stayed at Casa Selita in Orvieto Italy in March 2012. It was a peaceful, lovely place with wonderful hosts. I didn't mind the climb up the path, along the road, through the parking lot to get to town. It was spring and the birds were singing and all was well. The only thing was the bed was very firm.

Pallazzo Masi in Siena Italy
What a mix! Up to date accommodations in a 11th century palace, very close to great restaurants and the Campo. Antiques and pictures from Alizzardo's family grace the palace, and the warm welcome you receive is so refreshing! Do let them know in advance of your arrival time, and call from train station, as they do not live on property. We recommend the breakfast (extra) with fantastic coffees and pastries and conversation if you wish. We had a excellent experience on the Brunella wine tour that Daniella recommended. We will be back, Thank You!

Inverness and Edinburgh
I would like to highly recommend The Ardconnel in Inverness. It was in Rick's list along with the Ard Na Said in Edinburgh and both were winners. John and Elizabeth in Inverness were a real joy. John assisted me with a car issue with some wax compound to take some unwanted scratches off the rental car and saved me some big money. Who said driving on the wrong side of the road in Edinburgh was easy. Thanks Rick!

We stayed at Dolce Toscana for 2 weeks in October 2011 and were delighted. The accommodations were clean, well-equipped and tastefully decorated, the grounds were lovely and spacious, the view stupendous, and the local wines, restaurants and villages were the Italy of our dreams.
But most important was the personal attention we received. Silvia was
genuinely interested in making our vacation a very special experience. Her
knowledge of the region was invaluable, and her enthusiasm for the beauty of
Tuscany was infectious. If you happen to travel around Pisa or Volterra or
simply want to find out what the Tyrrhenian sea looks like and experience
the some of the best wines that Tuscany produces, don't miss the opportunity
to stay in Dolce-Toscana B&B.

Koen and Annemie Dieltiens Holiday Flat
I wanted to give a shout out to Koen and Annemie Dieltiens in Bruges. They are already in Rick's guidebook, but they didn't have any room in their regular B&B, so they set us up in their Holiday Flat a few blocks away. We were on a quiet street, in our own space. It was 70 euro a night, self catering and oh so cute. We felt like locals, not like random tourists. The flat is so close to all of the fun that Bruges has to offer, but still far enough away to escape all of the tourists. If you go, check out Ophelia's Bakery on the corner for the best waffles in town.

Arronbeg B&B in Maynooth Ireland
I would like to give 2 big thumbs up to the Aaronbeg B&B in Maynooth Ireland. Our daughter stayed here for 2 nights before starting her semester at NUI Maynooth. Michael & Maureen Downes went out of their way to help our daughter get setteled. Maureen even went as far as to drive our daughter to get a cell phone and drove her to her residence hall at the university.

Wonderful B&B in Normandy
La Ferme du Pressoire was both our nicest and least expensive lodging in France. Idyllic farm setting SW of Caen, 20 minutes from the Normandy beaches. We were thre couples staying in the cottage- spacious and very pleasant, well-appointed bedrooms with separate baths, a sitting/diningroom, washer/dryer, and full galley kitchen. Odile was a wonderfully cheery and gracious hostess, fixed huge and scrumptious breakfasts, including omelettes made with eggs just collected, wonderful selection of pastries, and cider pressed in the neighborhood. She even packed up the leftovers for out lunch picnics. A foal was romping in the pasture just next to our outdoor seating. Some rooms set for a family. This place was great!

Great Castelli Romani B&B
We spent a week at B&B Albero Gemelli south of Rome in Albano, last November,2011. Quiet, friendly, great breakfast,reasonable,45 minute train ride from Rome. Great place to relax, the neighboring hill towns in the Castelli Romani are great to visit. We visited friends from 20 years ago when we lived there. On our last evening, Mary, the hostess, prepared a delicious dinner for all of us as a good- bye party. Mario chose the wine. A great final bash for our old and now new friends .
