Marijuana in Europe: 2005

Ethnocentric Americans believe that because something is illegal in the US, it's wrong everywhere. However, many Europeans believe that marijuana is a recreational drug to be enjoyed by adults — much like alcohol. Those interested in "going local" with respect to marijuana during their European travels have few ways to compare notes. Let this be a forum for discussion. Was it safe to smoke? Did you feel comfortable? Did it add to your travel experience? Any pitfalls to avoid?

Editor's note: This board is monitored closely for inappropriate postings. If you would like to post a message, please read the topic introduction and our Spraypainters' Guidelines carefully. Solicitations to buy or sell marijuana, and postings concerning trafficking marijuana across borders, will be deleted. This board is for tips only.

First time to Amsterdam
I was wondering if anyone knew of any good shops/varieties for first time smokers. I've been too nervous to light up here, but when I go to Europe in the summer, I definitely plan on going to Amsterdam for a half a day.

Re:Netherlands pushing forward to total legalization
The Dutch government wants more control over the quality of marijuana and they want to be able to track where a particular strain originates (who grew it, thc level, growing conditions, etc.). Not sure if total legalization is the true agenda, but more quality control.

Netherlands pushing forward to total legalization
The plan in Maastricht, NL, is actually part of a LEGALIZATION program to allow farmers to grow cannabis on a large-scale program. More detals here: http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread21350.shtml

Restrictions on buying drugs in NL
Actually, I believe there are some ristrictions to foreigners buying softdrugs in the Netherlands. Except that it only concerns Maastricht (a city in the most southern point of the country). This action is taken because there was a lot of crime with professional drugs smugglers from southern Europe. I'm not entirely sure if this bill has passed yet, but to be sure I'd recommend you to go to Amsterdam (which is a far more interesting city to be anyway ;))

What Did you Expect??
why is it that one would go onto a marijuana post and chastise those for talking about said drug?? Go to another post and push your politics on someone else. At least have the courage to put a name and a city. My point is when you go to a steak house, don't be surprised that there is no fish on the menu. When you go to a message board titled "pot in Europe" don't be surprised that people are talking about the bud scene over seas.

Marijuana in Europe
When I read the posts that indicate that a person's vacation would be so much better if they were high I just have to feel sorry for them. How silly and sad to be in the bosom of Western Civilization and always thinking that London would be so much better if we were stoned, or the Louvre would be more cool if we were baked, or Rome was OK except we couldn't score any bud. I have no problem with people who use drugs for any reasons as long as they don't steal my TV to pay for their habit but this excessive whining about how you need pot to enjoy life sounds to me like you actually have a drug addiction problem. Which, again, is no problem to me as long as you don't steal my DVD player, too, to pay for your habit. And please dont try to put me in some neocon-pro-get-tough-on druggies-Just-say-NO box. I support the full de-criminalization of all drugs so that we can focus on helping drug addicts as opposed to our current War on Drugs that only benefit the Narco-cops and the Narco-dealers. My essential point is that if you believe that the world around you can only be tolerated under the influence of drugs you need to address your addiction issues so that you can truly work to create a tolerable world for yourself and others.

Re: Italy
Casey - marijuana is NOT legal in Italy or anywhere else in Europe for that matter. It is only "tolerated" in the Netherlands. You must be 18 or older to enter a 'coffeeshop' and 18 or older to purchase 'gear'.

How do you find people that may have 'gear'? Best place would be a park or train station, but be careful as scams are quite common.

Enjoy the scenery (with or without 'Mary').

EU Passport / Smoke
Dont pay any attention to this garbage..the NL is under some pressure to tighten up its drug situation - but remember that it is still illegal in the NL to posess Dope, despite its effective decriminalisation. For a legislature to pass a law restricts its sale to EU national only, would require the legal decriminalisation of the drug itself in the first place ...this isnt going to happen..its a step too far to legally recognise it rather than tacitly ignore its use. Dont worry, its a tabloid scare story that does the rounds now and then, partially inflamed by the vehement anti-drug lobby in te US strangely enough ! relax & dont worry!

New laws regarding Coffeeshops in Holland?
This is an Urban Myth that surfaces every couple of years or so. It even makes a few foriegn newspapers if it's a slow news day. Put bluntly it would be a violation of EU laws if any member state discriminated against a citizen of any other member state. I hereby pledge 100.00GBP to ChildLine if this ever becomes a reality.

Kind of an answer for Matt
I can't give Matt a definitive answer to his question but I know that this rumor has been around for a while. Attempts have been made to limit availability to the herb to residents of The Netherlands only in the past. When this happens I understand there is such an uproar from business people who will suffer when those of us who go there because of their liberal policy stop going. If they finally changed things it should be on the web somewhere.

New laws regarding Coffeeshops in Holland?
Being from the UK i've often popped over to Amsterdam for a weekend smoke. I have heard some disturbing news on the grapevine but can't seem to find anything concrete on the web.

I was told that from March 2006 if you don't have a Dutch passport you won't be able to buy anything in coffeeshops?

Has anyone else heard this and does anyone know of a site which gives a definitive answer?

Marijunana, Europe and Airplanes
If someone is so desperate for smoke that they would consider trying to smuggle it into the US from Europe they probably need to move someplace where it is more available close to home. The down side is so overwhelming that I can't imagine why any casual user would even try it. Find a better source at home or start growing it. Even a small home operation can easily provide all you need if you keep it simple. Keep in mind that I live in a place where it is legal to do this.

Marajuana on planes
Just to clear things up about what actually happens. The Dutch authorities couldn't care less about anyone smuggling cannabis out of Schipol airport. Nor could the cabin crew of the flight into London. Things get unpleasant when you land in the UK. If the cannabis is in your hold luggage it will be detected by some very well trained sniffer dogs at Heathrow baggage services( or any other UK airport baggage services ). These dogs are specifically, but not exclusively, targetted at flights arriving from The Netherlands. If on the other hand the cannabis is on your person or in your carry-on luggage it will almost certainly be picked up as you pass through security at Heathrow ( dogs and scanning procedures ). In the days after 9/11 Heathrow security staff have upped their game. Of course there is always the lucky one but overwhelmingly most of the people trying it get caught. The US Embassy at Grosvernor square will not help you. You will spend time in custody in the UK before being charged and deported. You will be denied any further entry into the EU. You will be charged in the US courts. You will get a criminal record, not just for possesion ( minor offence ) but also for smugglilng ( major offence ). I work for a UK airline based at Heathrow. Sadly this is a regular event, usually by American tourists aged between 18 and 30, often female. As they sit in the holding cell at Heathrow they start to realise how a moment of bravado is going to ruin their lives. Most come from very good families and backgrounds and it is heartbreaking to see their remorse as they start to realise what damage they have done to their lives and future careers.

some info, some questions
well i've been to the dam once, 04 cannabis cup. first trip to europe all togeather. 8 of us, and from what i got out of it, 8 is too many, too much time waiting, you're always waiting for someone to do something. anyway, cannabis cup is alright, too much of a hassle really. did sample all 21 strains entered in the cup as well as 4 hash strains within 5 days. can't wait to spend some time there this spring before the busy season. recommendations: barneys(just like everyone else says, but, hey can't beat smoke and a pancake at 9 am after being on a plane for 10 hrs. other shops, rokerij(yes, there's 4 of them, the one closest to the leidseplein, although the rokerij II is nice when waiting for that out of town train.) greenhouse, the one on Tolstraat, southern side, less crowds, same great arjan haze, thanx arjan. and one last one, abraxias. noticed some on this list do not like techno, not your shop. otherwise gorgeous three floors, and good space cakes (watch out rookies).

The plane truth (Forgive the pun)
James, James, James! Tsk, tsk. Forget it, bud. You'd have a better than average chance of going to jail BIGTIME! Smoke all you want while you're there, but do NOT even attempt to take it out of the country. Smuggling marijuana is a major crime in the States' unenlightened society. I'm afraid all of us in America are just going to have to wait a few hundred years until the US comes to its senses and realizes how much better weed is for society than alcohol. I always make my first and last stops in the Netherlands. And, I'm moving there as soon as I hit the lottery. :-)

i'm going to be in Amsterdam next week, and i wanted to read up about bringing marijuana out of the country... many of these posts say that trains frequently get searched, but what about airplanes? i'm taking a flight from amsterdam to London, and then back to the united states... would i have a decent chance of bringing it back on an airplane?

Czech Republic
Anyone going to the Czech Republic should know that marijuana is illegal. But it is not on the priority, unless you are growing a feild of 40 plants in the garden, then there will be a problem. Last summer we hit that whole city up. All you have to do is ask the bar tender if its cool to burn. If you can't, you can go outside. Most bars do not care as long as you are off to the side minding your own business. There are many sketchy street dealers in Praha, so get in touch with some locals, they all know were to get weed. Plus everything in Praha is way cheaper than Amsterdam. You will see when you get there.

Amsterdam-Haarlem and bud
I spent a few days in Amsterdam a couple of years ago and, even though I live in Alaska where possession of less than four ounces is legal according to state law, I found it very disconcerting to be rolling a joint in a coffee house in plain view of anyone walking by on the street. It just seemed strange being able to do that. I soon got over this paranoia though. The cost was 12 euros for two grams of excellent bud and I found it very easy to load up the small stone pipe I bought for 2 euros and smoke as I toured the city although I tried to be discreet and toke up when I was not around others. I took the stash and pipe with me when I traveled by train through Germany and into the Czech Republic although I probably would not do that again even though I received absolutely no scrutiny from border people checking passports on the train. When I got back to the Amsterdam area I stayed in Haarlem, a fifteen minute train ride from Amsterdam, and enjoyed the same availabitlity and quality as in Amsterdam. When I headed home I simply dropped the pipe and what was left of the bud in the hotel trash can, hoping that the housekeeper would find it and put it to use. Keep in mind that pot is NOT LEGAL in The Netherlands, just tolerated as a harmless activity by responsible adults, so long as you don't make an ass of yourself. The only think I would consider bringing back would be seeds as they would be easy to conceal. I didn't do it last time but will when I go back.

amsterdam
I've been To A'dam twice now, and as a daily smoker here in the States, I believe that the first day or 'session' of smoking can and probably will be overwhelming for even the most experienced smokers. Its nothing you can't handle, but some people might have an intense half hour or two, and/or an extreme come-down. But after the first smoke of the day you build a tolerance, and this causes the remaining 'highs' to be very comparable to 'highs' you get from weed smoked here in the States. Space Cakes will knock you on your ass though, eat more than 1 or 2. No matter who you are.

get acclimated before smoking up
My opinion and experiences also mirror the majority here. When I travelled with friends to Amsterdam in early 2004, the very first thing we did was seek out weed. Now, in America, I smoke quite often, sometimes every day, but that first time in Amsterdam was VERY overwhelming. It was also my first time in Europe, which was probably more of a trip than the weed was. My two big hits lasted for about six hours, and I'm normally accustomed to having to smoke up again every hour or so at home.

If you've never been to Europe before OR if you've never smoked pot regularly before, I would highly suggest NOT smoking as soon as you get there, but waiting until you are acclimated to your environment. Also, find a place that looks and feels nice, with no one being rude. That first coffee shop had these two young girls who kept laughing at us, and I thought that was strange for Dutch people, who tend to be laissez-faire about other people. I was freaking out quite a bit, but then I realized that they were French girls.

Having said all of that, I had the best weed and hash ever in Amsterdam, and I grew accustomed to smoking like the Dutch instead of like the Americans. I had some mixed joints, some nice hash, and on occasion shared a water pipe with another American.

Go slowly, go easily, and enjoy yourself. As long as you're careful, you'll have a great time.

swiss changes...we just came back from switzerland in july...we also had experienced the free and laid back attitude of several years ago...i searched all the old haunts with no luck...i finally ran into a street vendor in thun who was selling pipes and the like...i asked him what was going on and he said they have totally cracked down...there is none to be found...and are even promoting the "dangers" of smoking pot to the young swiss in schools...it is a shame...i was so looking forward to a "big chill out"...still had a great trip but i'm just not that big of a drinker...i checked in thun, lugano, locarno, davos and lucerne...oh well....mj

Marujuana laws changed in Switzerland recently?
I was in Switzerland in 2003 and found many nice, friendly, easy to find shops where one could buy pot in the form of aromatic bags (duftsacks). I will be back in Switz in 2006, and while searching the net, I can no longer find the shops I shopped at, and found some articles saying laws have changed and the sale of the marijuana "duftsack" is now illegal. Is that true? If so, its a shame. Not to mention stupid. Millions of people smoke pot in Switz, and, as we well know in the USA, illegality does not change the desire of people to consume and the steady increase in consumers, whether in Switz or anywhere else. All illegality does is create a government supported subsidy for a criminal drug industry, taking the production, distribution, and sales away from legal tax-paying businessmen, and putting it instead in the hands of organized crime, which pays no taxes and is run by thieves and assasins. It even turns the user/end-buyer (regular folks with jobs and families) into criminals. Overall a very bad idea, and a step backwards for Swiss society and its people.

Schengen
just to put this topic to rest - the authorities DO check trains & Planes coming out of Holland, especially on the German side. As you would suppose if you try to smuggle dope, expect no mercy if they catch you - they take drugs very seriously in many Lander & retrospective hair testing is enough to secure a conviction should the authorities choose to make an example of you..They catch people every day. Also beware that although Amsterdam is tolerant, it is still illegal & many areas out of the big cities will frown on open & blatant drug use in public - leading to attention you may not want. Final thought ? - respect the laws of the country you are in & be sensitive to local conventions Ignorance is not a defence for drug posession, whatever your opinion of the rights & wrongs of drugs...Just 'cos the locals seem to get away with it, doesnt mean that you can do the same.sorry, but its the truth!

A week in Amsterdam
I'd been to Amsterdam before but I spent much more time crawling between the various bars and coffee shops on this visit. The quality varies from place to place but is always better than what I'm used to in the US. Its probably a good idea to find out what won the cannibus cup the previous year and ask around in order to find out which shops sell it. This year it was Abnesia Haze and was sold at Barnies and Tweedy's. Both are small shops on side streets, not in the touristy areas. Prices are pretty much the same for comparable smoke in different shops, either due to regulation or competition. BaBa in the Red Light district and BullDog in Leidisplein sell space cakes, brownies, shakes, hot chocolates, muffins etc. which taste delicious and keep you high for hours. The people in Holland are very laid back and accepting, it is a very clean place and most people probably DON'T do drugs. It takes some getting used to the fact that you won't need to sweat cops as long as your not hurting anyone else. Agression is always unacceptable.

Reply to Ian
This is in response to Ian's comments---

you are wrong! Be smart about what you are doing. I was traveling from Geneva to Modena recently and when entering Italy was pulled off the train, along with my other three companions, and threatened with strip search unless we confessed to "the drugs we had." Of course we weren't STUPID enough to travel across boarders with anything incriminating, and told them, 'fine, search us, we don't have anything.' Thankfully we were not searched and allowed to re-board the train (at which times our seats had been taken, which started another scene all together). Be smart when you are traveling. The Italian mountain side police station does not sound like some place you want to spend a few days.

a few things I have learned
I have been enjoying the 'lighter' side of Amsterdam for years now and have learned a few things:

1) Bhongs are available in most locations but I would advise you not to put your mouth directly on the mouth piece - may I suggest you make an 'O' with your thumb and forefinger and place between your mouth and the bhong.

2) Make a 'plaan' and watch the time as you may find yourself wasting the entire day (& night) just sitting and there is a lot in Amsterdam to enjoy besides the coffeeshops.

3) There is no rule against rolling stubbies (short joints) This way you only smoke enough to enjoy for the time being and not too much to be a waste.

4) The Dance Clubs will let you bring in pot & hash but never ever try to bring in anything in a pill form or powder - especially if it is white - I had some Vitamin C tablets once and was almost kicked out.

5) And may I suggest a visit to The Jolly Joker located at 4 Niewmarkt at the end of Zeedijk across from the Waag. It has large windows which lend well to people watching, the selection is limited but reasonably priced and the people that work there are great. Besides they serve the best cookies with their teas & coffee and they'll even let you hook-up your iPod to the sound system if you ask nicely.

All in all have a fun, be careful and reasonable about what you smoke and if someone wags their finger at you and gives you a 'stern' look stop what ever you are doing, apologize and move on....

border crossings
Ian,

You are wrong, wrong, wrong about controls. I haven't experienced it myself yet since the EU came to pass, but I've read many experiences on the web where folks recounted trains and buses being checked and cars pulled over. You may get through the first time, the second, etc, but all it takes is one time for a little trouble. I'm not saying you'll have an experience like in "Midnight Express" for a couple of grams, but you may be fined heavily and spend a night or two behind bars. I don't think your average tourist wants that hassle!

americans arrested in coffeeshops
I have been in coffeeshops when there was a raid. It is not to arrest americans, but to conduct a search for three things, 1st they want to make sure that the coffeeshop owner or seller has no more then 500 grams on hand. 2nd, a control of harddrugs and weapons by patrons, and 3rd, if they see someone they need to talk too, they will talk to you. I have been personally checked in a controled raid and they always dismiss the American Tourists first.

Marijuana in Europe
I camped across Europe with my father, and all the campgrounds were enjoyable except for the one we found in Amsterdam. Every single tenter around us was a college pot smoker, up all night talking loudly, and the wind wafting the scent into our tent. Needless to say, the amount of sleep we got that night was less than nill.

Don't Be A Fool!
It would be very very foolish for you to try to mail, ship or otherwise carry any weed from the Netherlands to the US (or pretty much anywhere else, for that matter). Enjoy it while you are there. I've been through Amsterdam a few times in the past 5 years, and it's a great place to kick off or depart from your European vacation. The natives are generally very pleasant and most speak excellent english. If you have leftovers, give them to a smoker at a cafe before you leave town or just throw it away... It's not really very expensive and totally not worth the risks involved with bringing even a tiny leftover nugget out of the country. Have a great time!

Coffee Shops in The Hague
I worked in The Hague in '98 and '99. Gsnja was the 1st coffee shop a co-worker took me to. I spent lots of time at "The Game" in the City Center. This was before they split coffe shops and bars. There was a great place called Coffee and Dreams but I believe it is closed now. Cremers is a cool place to hang out. De Hut is a good place to make a purchase.

Best way for two days
Easiest way to smoke in A'dam for two days would be to find a coffee shop that has pre-rolled pure J's. May have to visit a few places. Ask the person what they'd recommend for something light, up, energetic, probably a sativa or some variety of Haze. (Indicas tend to be heavy). Try to find the pure J's that come in small conical plastic containers. They hold in the smell and debris. One such J will last for two days for light smokers. Buy two kinds so you can alternate and pick the high you like. No muss or fuss, no glass pipes, baggies, etc. Carry them with you, when you want to toke, find yourself a bench by a canal and enjoy. Go light at first; Dutch smoke is great. You may not find many varieties in the prerolled, but visit a few shops. Orange Bud and Kali Mist were great. Have a great trip!

€8.00 euro pipes you must kidding
I see pipes everyday at headshops, coffeeshops, and any other shop that has those kind of things. The lowest priced pipe I have ever seen was €2.50, the glass pipes are only €12.00, but most are €4.00-4.50, Thats why you people need to visit Rotterdam for at least one day.Save some money and see new places. www.rotterdamsmoketours.bravehost.com

Re: Amsterdam
I always go to Amsterdam by myself. When I go, the first thing I do is go to a head shop and buy the smallest, cheapest pipe they sell. I buy something for 7 or 8 euros, that I won't mind throwing away when I leave. Then I would recommend going to a coffeeshop and buying a small bag (usually 1 to 2 grams) of some decent herb. Then I load a small bowl and take one hit and let that sink in. You can buy pre-rolled joints, but they're often mixed with tobacco, or other filler. If you buy a joint, you might smoke more than you need, or you'll end up carrying around a partially smoked joint, which can get messy. That's why I prefer a small pipe. If you've smoked before, even if it has been a while, at least you have an idea of what to expect. Find a coffeeshop near your hotel, and just smoke a little, preferably at night. If you do get too stoned, just go sleep it off. I've been smoking for 20 years, and one or two hits is plenty for me. The problem with Dutch weed is it tastes so good, I end up smoking too much for the flavor. Spacecakes aren't for novices, just read some of the other posts on the board. Amsterdam is a blast, just play it safe and you'll have fun.

Amsterdam
Hi my name is Nick. This is my first post. I will be going to Europe this summer with a tour for 18 Days. The first three days I will be in Amsterdam by myself the next two I will be with my tour and for the rest of the days there after. I have not smoked pot in a long time. I should say I have not got 'stoned' in a long time. I hear the weed and 'spacecake?' is very strong in amsterdam I was wondering if I should smoke while I am on my own. I mean get stoned. This will be my first time in Europe and first time smoking in amsterdam. Would this be Wise?? Please email me. I haven't been on this web-site before so I don't know how friendly everyone is but Id really like to get some knowledge on things before I go. Im just concerned I will forget everything I am doing ect...(if I get stoned)...

My Amsterdam Experience
I'd smoked weed 3 times before travelling to Amsterdam in June, twice with good results (lots of laughter) and once with bad results (mass paranoia). Anyway, my smoking experience in Amsterdam wasn't good. I tried a place recommended by Rick near where our hotel was in the Jordaan . Being pretty much a newbie to smoking, I asked the girl at the counter what kind she'd recommend for a novice. She seemed thoroughly annoyed by my question, and pointed at the Thai and said quite testily, "That's the lightest we have". Not a good environment to start my high in. I smoked about 3/4 of the joint and the only noticeable effect I got was that my legs shook when I tried to walk. Disappointing. Well, I asked for something mild and mild was what I got, right? Pity she couldn't have been a bit less hostile.

A couple days later in a MUCH friendlier coffeeshop near the red-light district, I had a hash brownie. At the suggestion of the counter workers, I ate half of it, then waited an hour to see if I noticed any effect. I sat and chatted in the upstairs lounge area of the shop for a hour and didn't notice anything, so I ate the rest of the brownie (it was incredibly delicious, by the way). I waited another hour...nothing. My friend and I said goodbye to our new friends in the lounge and rode our bikes back to the Jordaan. We went to dinner at a little Mexican place and about halfway through the meal my mind got blown! This was almost 4 hours since I ate the first half of the brownie! I was barely coherent and fading fast, so we finished our meal and left. Thank God we were right across the street from our hotel; I don't think I could have made it much further. I don't remember a thing about the rest of that night. Anyway, if you're trying the space cake or the hash brownies, allow a sizeable amount of time for the effect to kick in!

Over Rated Weed, I do constant updates for the Amsterdam coffeeshop directory, and the amount of weed and hash I purchase in order to compare is really just dailey usage, but once you have been shopping every coffeeshop in Rotterdam, and Amsterdam, for years you know where to go and what to purchase, make sure you look and smell, what you are thinking about. Dont just grab anything they hand you. Its all about knowledge, and if you have the Rotterdam smoke tours map guide, when you come to Rotterdam, you can save so much more cash then staying in amsterdam a whole week, but its ok I went to AMS 50 times before I ever took my first visit to Rotterdam. Right now Temple Ball hash at Sensi smile Rotterdam 12 euros two grams, you must ask for it, its not on the menu. OUTSTANDING. Take care people

Switzerland
I was in Bern summer of 2002 and found a "Smart Planet store" or something close to that name, e that was selling nice fat nugs. Fired up and pedaled around the town along the narrow cobbled streets, it was a hot lazy Sunday, and people were sitting out. Found some HUGE FREE pools at the base of the Parliment buildings and went swimming, layed out in the sun, and pedaled along this beautiful path that followed the river all the way through town. It was UNREAL. I wonder if that store is still around. It was right in the heart of Bern.

Overrated weed
Space Cake in Amsterdam can be a bit of a roll of the dice. I've had plenty of cake that had no significant effect and I've had stuff that was mind blowing. A lot of it is about knowing where to buy. Not all cake contains the same level or grade of hash so don't be afraid to ask how strong it is. When my wife first tried it she halucinated for a solid three hours. Cannabis comes in different degrees of strength and you have to take that into account. The coffee shops will be only to happy to advise you before you buy. Cannabis in Amsterdam can be as strong as any you have had or ever will have, it can also be very mild. The only thing that is a constant is that it is always more expensive to buy in Amsterdam than it is in any other part of the Netherlands.

For the record I've been an occasional smoker since 1969 and have been a regular visitor to Amsterdam( at least three times a year ) since 1974

Re: Overrated weed
I agree with the other two posters. I started tokin' back in the late 60's and the first time I tried it (Mexican, $15/oz!) about the only thing I got out of it was that I thought lights at night looked a little cooler than normal. It took a coupla times before I understood what being "stoned" was. However, the first time (and last time, incidentally) I ate pot was at a friend's in Italy after we'd scored a big gob of hash. We made 6 blueberry muffins with 20 grams of Moroccan hash in it. I FREAKED! Only pot bummer I've ever had in my life. (Other than being busted once or twice. Jeeze, I hate American pot laws. What a bunch of DUH!) The quality of hash in the Netherlands is, in general, very very good. http://picturetrail.com/bepineurope

RE: overrated weed
I wouldn't say Dutch weed is overrated; it's world class. Way back when I first started smoking pot, the first few times I smoked, I just got a mild buzz. Then one day I smoked some really good Thai, a lot actually. BOOM! It was the most intense experience I've had, stronger than mushrooms. Everyone is different, but for a lot of people it takes a few times. It can catch you off guard. If you've never smoked, being on vacation in Amsterdam might not be the best place find out. You might catch a giddy buzz; you might get blown away. (Especially if you eat it. When you smoke, you exhale a lot of THC. When you eat it, it all goes to your head!) Pot is the safest drug. You can't OD. But it is powerful, that's why we like it! If you already smoke it, Amsterdam is paradise. If you don't, Amsterdam can be an eye opener. It might be better to know before you go.

overrated weed
If you have never tried marijuana before it is likely you will not feel any effects your first time. I didn't, no one I know did either. So weed in Amsterdam or anywhere else for that matter is not overrated, you just need experience with it before you can reap its benfits.

Space Cakes in Amsterdam
I, by any means, have never taken drugs in my life ... until I visited Amsterdam. I had my first space cake, or should I say, a mini cupcake with "weed" inside. Anyway I waited and waited but nothing happened to me. I think weed in Amsterdam, in general, is very over-rated. My friend smoked 2 joints and it had absolutely no effect on him. The space cake was a waste of 5 euros.

Border Crossings
A quick scan of these posts yields the common sense conclusions that you should know your limits and that everything (including random searches) happens sometimes. During my recent three weeks traveling by train between Germany, Holland, Belgium and France I experienced absolutely no sign of border controls at any point. Not a single cop or dog on any of the many trains I took. Who knows, maybe they were all on the train behind me...

Scary Night in Amsterdam
I have just returned from a weekend in Amsterdam with my boyfriend 6 other friends. After taking in some museums and cultural experiences, we decided that Saturday night was the big one! The other 6 had decided to do mushrooms, but as an amateur drug-taker I decided to stick to marijuana. My boyfriend had never tried anything, so he agreed to eat space cake with me. I have smoked before a little and really enjoyed the effects, so was expecting this to be much the same. After eating a whole chocolate muffin (no one told me to do otherwise!) I sat and waited for this effects to hit. An hour later, still nothing. We all left the coffeeshop and headed to the red-light district to check out the 'girls'. On our way there, i started to giggle uncontrollably but my boyfriend was feeling nothing so I was in this alone. All of a sudden, everything started to feel like a dream. I wasn't hallucinating as such, but I was kinda scared because nothing felt real. The hookers looked like dolls and the whole scene was just too surreal. We all went to another coffee shop so the others could take their mushrooms and all of a sudden it hit my man. He was SOOOO freaked out. It was the most horrible experience of my life. I had to spend the next 3 hours trying to keep him calm and reassuring him that he was going to be ok. I ended up power-chucking a little while later before we returned back to the hostel in a taxi. The next morning I felt fine, but after eating, it started to return. That was Sunday. It's now Wednesday afternoon, I'm back in London and have returned to work where I am a teacher!! I am still feeling the effects - obviously to a lesser degree, but part of me fears I will never feel 100% normal again. I would be so careful if you are eating space cake and be sure to get advice from someone who knows before you try it. It's sooooo different to smoking.

Paris by Air
Don't try to bring pot in by plane. There are a lot of dogs around and security is pretty tight considering our current era. It would be extremely hard to get onto an international flight from the US without it being found, even accidentally. I'm not sure which would be worse: being caught with it in the US or here in France. Remember, the policy here is guilty until proven innocent.

Paris and The Hague
As to the Parisian policies: They are pretty strict here in terms of pot/hash use. Just like in the US, you can drink yourself stupid here on wine or whatever but if you get caught with hash or pot, be ready for a VERY unpleasant experience. I have been coming to Paris every summer for a few years now. There used to be a great spot to get quality hash and good pot on the Champs de Mars under the Eiffel Tower, but each year it has become harder and harder to find there and the number of undercover cops has increased. This is probably due to the fact that there had been some escalating violence between the muslims and the non-muslims who were selling down there. Anyway, descretion is the key. It can be found, but it is risky, and it can be brought into the country via train, but this is a russian-rulet endeavor with about four bullets and only two empty chambers in the gun if you get my drift.

Now, I have been to Amsterdam but this summer I am planning on travelling to The Hague for this awesome Eurasian Festival (it goes till the 19th of June if you are on this side of the pond) and I was wondering if anyone knew of any good coffee shops there? Happy travels, all!

Bringing weed for personal use?
I have never been to Europe before and I will be going to Paris soon. From what I read in here it would be rather foolish to bring a small personal stash with me? I must admit that I am naive about the traveling thing and I would hate to ruin a vacation with a pot bust. Has anyone out there ever traveled with any from the US to Paris? Is it a bit crazy to bring it? Also, if it's best to leave it home, is it dicey to look for it in Paris? Thanks!!

RE: Schipol Airport
Very interesting! Thanks for the update. Recently the Dutch have come under fire for their lax cannabis laws, mainly from fellow EU member countries, such as Germany and Sweden. It sounds like Holland is trying to placate its neighbors by attempting to limit the outbound flow of soft drugs. One of the objectives of the EU leadership has been to standardize the drug laws throughout Europe. It will be interesting to see what effect, if any, the recent rejection of the EU constitution by the Dutch has on their internal drug policies. I bet the billions of euros generated from ?drug tourism? will be too difficult for The Netherlands to give up. If they start searching departing tourists to keep other countries happy, it?s a price we?ll have to pay to keep the coffeeshops open.

Schipol Airport
On May 2, 2005 at Schipol Airport (outside Amsterdam) the outbound passengers were getting all the usual security searches plus there were two Dutch Police ( no dogs, though) taking random people aside and doing complete clothing/body searches. They checked one guy and intensely searched every lining and all possible places he could have stashed anything. He was a few people ahead of me in line. I noticed a small baggy with a bud in it lying on the floor near me. Someone decided not to test them. We'd gone to Haarlem a few days before and were trying to get our cell phones to work. Turned out to be just a simple band frequency setting we needed to do. Someone directed us to a coffeeshop called Easy Goings. Nice menu on the wall. Morroccan brown hash was 12 Euros/ 2 grams; Afghani black 10 Euros/ 2 grams; Super Haze weed was 12 Euros/ 2 grams. We had two coffees there.

Locarno, Tessin, Switzerland
I lived for six months in Tessin (around Locarno), and go back to relax sometimes, so this info is cca. 2 years old. In my experience Tessin is the most liberal canton in this context, I was told Zurich is pretty much dried up.

In Locarno I know of at least three shops selling "incense bags", one is just across the street from the train station. Smoking in the street and public places is frowned upon, so be discreet, it is easy to find the "designated smoking areas" if you know what to look for (rests of ripped open cigarettes, etc). Small train stations, the lakeside, and the alley behind the Bar Sport in Locarno come to mind. Just follow your nose.

Rules for enjoyment and don't carry across borders
As a business man who, like many others, occasionally adds a day to rest in Amsterdam before heading on to other places, here is some common sense for you: take it easy and never carry across borders. Take it easy in that I have read many posts that say Amsterdam weed "is" or "isn't" stronger than what this or that person gets at home. To follow that advice and end up in your hotel room crushed or throwing up on the street is foolish. The strength of Marijuana is very subjective to your smoking experience and individual tolerance. Spend a couple Euros on a joint with a baggie. Smoke 1/4 to 1/2 and then wait 20-30 mins. Smoke more when you understand your personal tolerance. Space cakes? I have seen more tourists with ruined days because of the potentially massive experience of cakes hours after ingestion. Use caution, it can take time for the cake to have it's affect and for those presuming a easier riade than smoking, be warned: it is not.

Don't carry across borders- ever. Why? In 20 years of traveling by train in Holland I can say it is a regular experience to see authorities enter trains with dogs to search. Every day? No. Every train? No. But when it does happen, it's a hassle. Hide your weed in the bathroom? First place they check. If it's found in the bathroom expect delays for everyone as the dogs will go person to person having a good smell at you. It's a major hassle for everyone. Each drug search seems to end up with 2-4 people hauled off the train. If that happens to you expect that you will spend lonely time in a foreign speaking jail where the American consulate will offer no assistance. Expect large legal fees, deportation, and a hassle from your home government. Your record of expulsion will follow you home.

There will be those who complain at this post and say I have gotten it cross border to here or there, but that, my friends, is your lucky roll of the dice. Get caught and you will ruin a small piece of your life, your traveling partner(s) trip, and what could be a great time. Why do it?

Greece
In Athens you can occasionally get some low grade Moroccan from the low grade Moroccans hanging around the side streets off Ammonia Square. Expect to be ripped off and have your pockets picked as well.

On the islands your best bet by far is on Mikanos in the Cyclades and also at Kavos on the Island of Corfu.

Please be very aware that most of the Greeks strongly disaprove of cannabis and most small hotel owners will at least consider calling the cops if the find traces or smell anything in your room. This is particularly true on the smaller islands. Greek cops are not the most reasonable of people nor are their courts a placen in which foriegners with little language skills get a balanced hearing. Don't expect the US Embassy to come to your aid - it won't.

It just isn't worth the risk.

Greece
I was in Greece three years ago and I found it difficult to come across anything. I did eventually find some really bad quality stuff through an aquaintance, but without an insider I think it would have been impossible (or at least not worth it for me). That was on an island, In Athens I was told that it was very uncommon and worse things like cocaine (yuck) were much more readily available, really unfortunate. Has anyone had any recent experiences in Greece and what about the quality?

Although I've never been myself, I've heard that Italy is pretty lenient, I know that use and posession is decriminalized but I don't know how that translate to what you'll experience. I have heard stories about Italian kids smoking out in the open and cops around not taking notice and actually joining in to play soccer with them. I don't have any reccomendation as to how you would come across any though.

Dope in Europe
First I have to say that I love America and go whenever I can, however Europe is so much cooler for spliff.(dope) My work has taken me to most countries in Europe and I don't think I've failed to score in any one of them, even in Greece. The key is to be discreet. Smoke in the hotel(with the gap at the bottom of the door sealed with a damp towel) or in parks, streets, wherever. Maybe not stinky skunk but hash and tobacco spliffs are OK - it just looks like a roll up ciggie, which many Europeans smoke due to the very high cost of tailor made cigarettes. Be sensible about it and you'll be fine. Smoking dope in England is probably as popular as drinking and the police know that a stoner is going to cause far less disturbance of the peace than a bunch of drunk football supporters.

If you want to score just ask around in likely looking places! Brixton in London is good and the police turn a blind eye. In Germany I've found rail stations are a good place to look. Try to fit in with your surroundings and above all else DO NOT look like an American tourist - the anti American feeling here is very strong, so many people judge all Americans by the policies of your President. Enjoy!

Netherlands Scene
In The Netherlands please be prepared before you smoke and careful after. You don't want to lose your money, passport (and if you do mushshrooms your mind), etc.. The culture is very different here. Don't expect it to be America. People are way sophisticated and you will fool no one. Don't carry anything out side of The Netherlands. Other countries are more relaxed than the US but techically you could end up in a much worse state if caught. Holland is ok everywhere. NOT IN FRONT OF CHILDREN.

RE: Suggestions for a new Traveler?
First of all, don't smoke yourself stupid. Enjoy yourself, but don't go overboard. I assume you're not going to Europe solely to smoke legal herb. If so, then you'd probably spend your entire trip in Holland. There is a lot to do and see in The Netherlands, stoned or not. The same is true of any European country. I've found just being in Europe was a high in itself, especially my first visit. The best way to deal with the "leaving Amsterdam blues" is to only buy what you think you can realistically smoke. Tell yourself before you go, that you will give any left-overs to some lucky smoker in a coffeeshop before you leave. And remember, you can always go back.

This summer, while en route from Amsterdam to Paris, French Customs officials asked to see the passports of everyone in our car. They searched 3 or 4 travelers - seemingly at random. you can take weed out of the shop just fine. I bought a nice little bowl to smoke out of while there and went from shop to shop smoking out of it. you don't necessarily have to buy pot in each shop but you should at least buy something to drink. Some people like to roll joints too of course. I usually likw to ask the weedtender what is popular at the moment and what is the strongest. They also have bong that people can use but that kinda sceeves me out. Amsterdam channels web forum or the smokers guide or coffeshop guide on the web can answer any and all questions. Hope this helps:)

A.J., It is true that if a coffeeshop now serves anyone under 18 they could loses their liscense now since there are stricter laws now. so for the whole coffeeshop survival I would recommend against it. But like Al said your friends can get it and you can just smoke it somewhere else, either your hotel or Vondel park. There are even some smoker friendly restaurants too.

europe
I recently moved to France from USA and have been checking into the laws of different EU members.

Amsterdam is THE place for tourism and open weed. Dont take it out of Holland, however.

Belgium is somewhat relaxed.

England recently downgraded from class B to C. So I believe this makes weed a misdemeanor and not an arrest. There is much discussion on this on the BBC news website.

Switzerland is virtually legal. However on a recent trip to Geneva I saw NO shops, or they were not very obvious and TRUST ME, I looked very hard all day. Zurich and/or Bern are next on my list, Ill update on my finds.

France is uptight, and a Dutch weed writer was recently tossed into prison for hashish from Spain at border. Not a good situation in France currently. Sigh..

Cannabis culture in Nederlands
I am getting ready to head back to Europe later this month and was enjoying the notes on cannabis in Netherlands and elsewhere.

I've been there twice (one in 1992 with no money and once in 2002 as a judge at the Cannabis Cup - a somewhat cheesey event put on by Hight times). I visited over 30 coffeeshops during the event and smapled liberally from the menus and even made a daily online photo journal (to remember what I'd smoked I suppose ;-)

My fave coffeeshops are Barney's who have dominated the Cannabis Cup in recent years for their great Sativa strains and for the great coffeeshop atmosphere (i.e. good food and not thumping techno all the time), and the GreenHouse, great Super KaliMist and lounging area. There is even "celebrity" pics on the walls.

It is a blast seeing the different types of folks you meet smoking. All ages, nationalites and walks of life.

For weed rookies, my advice is to go with the Sativa strains over the Indicas. Sativa will keep you laughing and energetic all day while Indicas are more likely to make you feel like loafing and taking a nap!

Also be sure to look for "Ice-o'later" or "bubble" hash as it is made local (Nederhash) and more lively than the imported hashes. This tasty, almost powdery, light hash is made from separting the crystals from the plant matter using no chemicals making a fabulous smoking experience.

My fave is to find a coffee shop with clean, glass bongs (Barney's has several, Greenhouse had a plastic one if i recall correctly), not some dirty one, and load up single hits of a pinch of some "Haze" type stativa blend (Morning glory is a beauty) and then sprinkle some bubble hash atop and rip in down in one good pull ... droool ...

Also if you loathe tobacco like me, then be careful sharing joints with folks as almost *all* locals mix joints. Ask "Is it Pure?" to find out.

Experienced tokers should absolutely try the Volcano Vaporizer for a cool new way to get high high high all day whith minimal burnout.

While it is "polite to be polite" in your smoking habits, I found that smoking a joint just about anywhere is OK as long as you are considerate, if not totally discreet. Hacking up a lung and roasting down a massive cone joint while hi-fiving your buddies isn't cool, but compared to the clandestine methods one is obliged to employ in the US, being chill is easy here. I am talking about smoking a J while waiting for a bus or sitting on a bench next to a canal sketching, or even on the train (in the smoking car).

The best coffeeshops are really the Willie's operations in Haarlem (there are 3 i believe). I attended a grower's party there and holy smoke! Too much fun. Other little towns like Deventer are also worth little day trips. Fun getting high and hoping a train to elsewhere.

I have pics on my site if anyone is *really* interested.

Anyhow, anyone have experience toking in Spain? I headed there this time to find the tasty outdoor herbs.

Cheers,

Amsterdan - Germany
We just returned from Germany, with a very short visit through Amsterdam. We "thought" the laws in Germany were somewhat the same, but the minute our returning train from Amsterdam to Germany was "checked" we were busted for a small amount - three cigs, actually. The German Polizei were friendly, confiscated our stuff and sent us on our way. Needless to say, it scared the crap out of us and we never headed back to Amsterdam again. Plus, we were worried the entire trip if they would be looing for us - paranoia, I suppose. So... know the laws where you are and where you are going and do nto cross any borders with any amount. It's just not worth it.

Germany and cannabis
Hello there all. I am and American living in Germany. The marijuana laws in Germany are very similar to the US. I have had friends get into trouble with this. what usually happens is you sit in the polizei tank for a day or so and then in most cases get booted back to America. It may be different for locals but the Germans usually are polite about it and tell you "sorry" that had to send you home. if you come accross Marijuana in germany be descreet.

comment on "Coming Home"
To clarify, Marijuana is only LEGAL in Switzerland for industrial uses. It is illegal the minute that you go to smoke it. That is why it is sold as "Indian Tea" or "potporri sachs". Basically, everyone, including the government, ignores the fact that it is used recreationally in Switzerland. And, you will smell it in most train stations. You will find a different attitude, though still somewhat lax, in the more French areas of Switzerland. If it was legal to smoke, you could light up just about anywhere. You can't, I wouldn't. Just use your head, be somewhat discrete and enjoy smoking in one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

No sign of this either in Rotterdam or The Hague ( and the minute I start speaking Dutch it becomes obvious I'm an Englishman ). One thing that has changed is that they have become very strict about how much they will sell you at one go. It's now strictly 5 grams at any one time.

No new policy as of this past week
I was in A'dam from Jan. 15 to Feb. 1, 2005 and thankfully, their policy apparently has not changed, at least as far as we could see. We bought and smoked weed in at least a dozen great and friendly locations. Trust me, there was no way the propriators could have mistaken us for Native Nederlanders! We scream "tourist", as I've got crappy feet and have to wear sandals all the time. So what with my bare feet on their snowy ground, it was clear to all that we were from "out of town." Incidentally, the advice in this forum was very valuable to us, in terms of what shops might cater to old hippie-people like us, and I thank Rick for hosting the only forum I've been able to find where this topic can be freely discussed. Thanks, Rick. I've enjoyed your TV show much more since I found out what a cool guy you are, as regards adult pursuits not legal in the US.

Weed Update
Just returned from New Years in the 'Dam and have to say it was so wonderful to feel free to smoke a joint in a coffeeshop. My two favorites were Barney's for Haze in the morning, described by the dealer as "a good first smoke of the day" with a terrific potato and cheese omlette and Grey Area where the dealer was so nice! But my very favorite coffeeshop was Willie's in Harleem. I am a middle-aged woman traveling alone and I spent three straight days at the Van Gogh enjoying the art and the excellent cafe sandwiches in their cafeteria after smoking excellent weed without a care. Going back in June with my daughter...for 3 weeks this time. Can't wait! Weed prices are about double what Steve's quotes in his 2004 Amsterdam guidebook--about 12 euro in the city for a small baggie at places like Route 99, about 3.50-6 euros per pure pre rolled joint(with filter!). Bring enough money!
