Room-Finding Tricks: 2006
The town is packed, you don't have a reservation, and night is quickly approaching. What are your emergency room-finding tricks?
No problems with Venere
In response to the venere complaint...it's unfortunate you had a bad experience. Not having a hotel ready (or as you planned) is a big hassle. However, I have used venere on 3 occasions (to book rooms in Rome, Nice and Paris) and have been perfectly satisfied with the service. Not had any problems, found it efficient and would definiely use the site again.

DON"T use Venere.com ...We are traveling this month and will not be using this service again. Last year I booked a room in Rome. Long storey short--at our arrival- the hotel was under construction--and probably had been for months...so the interior pics were a fraud... the photos of the outside of the hotel..were of a five star hotel down the street!!!-- not this B&B...to remedy it...They sent us to a flop house near the train station that was more like a "by the hour" place...NO WAY!!! AND when I tried to reach Venere and cusomer service from the internet cafe...it could not be reached from Rome at all..their site was not reachable from inside Italy...we called AMEX and I filed a fraud complaint with Venere.com with their customer service... got nowhere.,,but a computer generated thank you for your business response... BEWARE.

During our recent trip to Scotland and England we followed Rick's suggestions for most of our reservations, however, we were going to Newcastle and he had no recommendations, therefore, we used a group called Lastminute.com at the Waverly station in Edinburgh and they booked us into a real dump. They charged us and so did the hotel, and two months later I am still attempting to get a refund. Letters to this agency go unanswered, so beware.

London Earl's Court Area
I was just over there today. In the 2 years since I stayed near the Earl's Court Tube Station the area has improved a lot; even the tube station looks lots better. I stayed at the London Town Hotel in 2004 (found it on www.londontown.com) and was happy with the location and condition of the hotel. There are many hotels in the area. I suspect a person could look around and find a decent room at a decent price in the area on a "last minute" basis.

Ask a local
During our 11 day trip around the southern half of Ireland, we accidently encountered the "World Ploughing Championship" in the Carlow area. We were visiting the Famine ship at New Ross, when we were informed that all lodging in a 1 hour radius of Carlow was booked. We had planned to head to the Kilkenny/Cashel area for the night. We reluctantly decided to skip that area, since it would be way out of our way to backtrack to, after Kinsale. It did give us time to take in the Waterford Crystal Factory, which we enjoyed more than we thought we would. We then headed west toward Cork. With no reservations ahead, we stopped in Dungarvin to find a B&B. We searched a while with no luck. We ended up in a dead-end parking lot, and a local lady was walking to her car. We simply rolled down the window and inquired if there was a B&B she would recommend. She did...the Tudor House, above the Tudor Pub. It was a great choice...near the Shamrock Restaurant (great bacon and cabbage)and we were extremely lucky to have trad. music in the pub below, our 1st of 9 nights of incredible Irish Pub music!

Cinque Terre, Italy
I arrived in Vernazza without a booking since the place I had intended to stay at lost my reservation. I was happy to find several rooms for rent by inquiring at the very helpful information office at the train station.
The room I ended up in turned out to be among one of Rick's recommendations,(Memo Rooms)and it was fabulous and very affordable.
Apparently lots of people never show up to stay and therefore these B&B's are left with rooms to try to fill. It pays to ask!

Venere.com: bad customer service
Over a month ago, I made a reservation for an apartment in Rome for 3 nights. I received confirmation that the reservation was booked and complete the next day. Just yesterday Venere.com emailed me and said the reservation was canceled with no explanation and no alternatives offered. Our trip is next week and now we have no place to stay. So much for planning in advance...

Brussels'Hotel Bristol Stephanie: Bad Customer Service
First, let me say I have never set foot inside the Hotel Bristol Stephanie, so I can't offer an opinion on the facility itself. What I comment on is it's management and it's complete lack of customer service. I reserved a room at the Hotel Bristol Stephanie through their partner hotel chain's website (Thon Hotels, Norway). Due to a change in travel plans, I had to cancel the reservation, so I called the hotel directly, several hours before the 6 PM deadline. Inexplicitly, the hotel refused the cancellation, telling me I had to cancel through the third party website. I then tracked down an internet café and did so. Having essentially canceled the reservation twice, I was surprised to find a full charge from the Hotel Bristol Stephanie on my credit card. Subsequent emails to the hotel's management produced one brush-off response and nothing else. Clearly the management of this hotel couldn't care less about it's customers unless they're standing there with Euros in their hands. It's the sign of a bad hotel, I don't have to set foot inside to know that.

Venice - near airport
We had a 6:15am flight and needed to stay close to the airport. We found the Marriott Courtyard at a great rate (35% less than through Marriott) through www.octopustravel.com. It was less than 1km from the airport with shuttle and close to a bus stop from the train station. The facility is very new and the breakfast was prepared at 4:30am before we took the shuttle to the airport. I know this type of place sort of breaks the typical rule of staying with the locals, but for a very early flight, this is a great option.

Earls Court area of London
Wayne, best advice is to just stay clear of any hotel in the Earls Court district of London! This area is known for cruddy hotels! So, unless you're a young guy who can "crash" just anywhere and you have no scrupples for cleanliness, you'll want to look elsewhere the next time!

When sorting through the maze of web sites to find just the right hotel at the right price, check out www.tripadvisor.com to read reviews of other tourists who have stayed at that hotel. (Nearly every hotel imaginable finds its way to this site!) A hotel's website may seem quite convincing but the packaging sometimes misleads you. Real people will give real advice as to how good the place really was for them.

Finding our own Backdoors #2
On our last trip to Europe we took our 6 kids and my mother-in-law. With that many people seredipity would have had us sleeping in the car. So before we left home, after deciding on an itinerary, I started looking for pensions either outside of the cities we were visiting during the day, or on the way to our next days destination. Most towns in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland now have their own web site that can be accessed by typing the name of the town (you need a good map) followed by .de in Germany, .at in Austria, of .ch in Switzerland. Most of the websites have the accomodations available in the town--complete with pictures and homepages or email addresses. I would email 3-4 with the composition of our group, and, from the responses, I would pick one and finalize the reservation. It worked without a hitch for 15 nights. Our accomodations w/ breakfast averaged 24 euro per person per night even including 1 night in a hotel on the edge of the cliff in Muerren that cost much more than that.

Finding our own Backdoors #1
When my wife and I have traveled in Europe before, we would find our accomodations by driving out of the big cities 15-30 km and pick a pension in one of the near-by villages. The rooms have always been clean and the beds comfortable. Most now have the bathrooms in the room rather than in the hall. Though the accomodations are basic--(often no TV--big deal)--the pace is relaxing, the people are friendly and fun to visit with, the food is great, and the milk you have with your breakfast probably came from the cows in the back yard. The only requirement is a rental car, but I love to drive in Europe and wouldn't do it any other way.

For Andy lodging in Munich
I was in Munich last year for Oktoberfest. I found a good hotel in the city center across from the train station for 88USD included beakfast. It was not the Ritz but it was a nice hotel. It was called Hotel Royal. It is right next to a strip club. But there were no problems what so ever. I did not feel unsafe at any time. The people at the hotel were very nice and there is a safe in the room. I think it is Rick's book. But if you go to google and look up Hotel Royal in Munich it should come up. I booked it through a great website called www.inthotels.com Good luck. -Kim

RAIL PASS BARGAIN STOCKHOLM-Helsinki
EURAILPASS AND OTHER RAILPASS BARGAIN STOCKHOLM Sleep on the Silja and Viking line cruises to Helsinki and Turku FREE. Look on their websites under rail pass discounts, ZERO cost for a shared cabin on Silja. I went to Turko. You must book ONE WAY tickets. If you book roundtrip you will have to pay for a cabin one way. On Viking I did not get a cabin to Helsinki, slept in the sleeping room provided for free. I am 50, 30 people shared that room, couples nice people all. There were cheap reclining airflight chairs too. On the way back from Helsinki I shared an inexpensive cabin with 3 females for 15 euros. Do not worry that it is under the car level. The bed was wide and motionlesss. I saw my roommates for less than one hour total, lots to do on the ship. Slept like a baby, especially knowing I paid a total of 15 euros for 4 nights!

Get an Apartment
One thing vacationers should try is searching in newspapers or online classified ads for apartment availability. After staying in an 8 room dorm hostel, I told myself the next time it will be an apartment.
I found a couple on Craigslist.com in Amsterdam that advertised their apartment for a 3 day vacation rental. The price ended up being cheaper than a hostel. My friend and I are only paying 20 euros a piece for 3 days. Hostel prices were starting at 30 euros.
We have the place to ourselves, access to coffee, tea, towels, linen, TV, kitchen and everything else included. You can't beat the price and the location - Vondelpark.
So if you are sick of hostels and perhaps travelling with one or two other people, definitely search the classifieds for vacation apartment rentals.

Berlin: Hotel Carmer 16 - DANGER - FIRE TRAP
We stayed for over one week at this delightful, now Rick Steve's recommended hotel in the Savigny Platz area of Berlin - until we had to leave at 6:30am for our flight home.
We found that we were locked in the hotel, all of the exit doors were locked. Fortunately, there was a manager on duty who heard my knocking and let us out, but there is nobody on duty from 3:00 until 6:00am.
This is a very dangerous fire trap situation. I'm gong to search for the appropriate Berlin agency to report this too, but if you happen to know who that is (before 7 July 2006), I'd appreciate it if you would contact me with that information (I'm writing this on thurs 6 July, and we are still time warped and sleep deprived.

Ask the bartenders or locals
Traveling alone, I had no travel plans and winged all accomodations when traveling through Italy in June of 2006. I never once had a problem finding a room. Cheap hotels on the adriatic coast, Rick Steve´s reccommendations helped out, many surrounding hotels near his picks. Le CinqueTerre was easy as well. I arrived on a friday night in Vernazza and found it possible to walk into 5 Pirates and order a lovely desert and ask for a room. Also, the Blue Marlin Bar has an up beat atmosphere, great drinks and friendly staff to help you out. If you find one dead end don`t give up because someone will know someone with a room. Of course it helps to smile, say chao and ask in italian but most of the locals speak enough english. The views are fantastic in that region also. Enjoy!

Cinque Terre without Reservations
There is a small, inexpensive hotel down the stairs and across the street from the train station in La Spezia. I think it is the Parma Hotel. I was in Europe last summer for two months with my best friend and we did not reserve rooms any portion of our trip. Whenever we couldn't find a vacancy at the hostel we looked for "Bed for rent" plaques posted on doorframes. Different in each country, but the same idea. Many people will rent out a room in their house for travelers. Also much less expensive than Hostel International and other hostels. A plus was that we got to meet some locals and found great sights/restaurants not listed in our travel books. Ask at the train station.

We went with no reservations and because we were driving we would just stop in at a likely looking candidate and ask about price and availability. We were never disappointed in our 3 wonderful weeks. Our magnificent hotel in Positano (Albergo Montemare)with parking/view/balcony/breakfast was c.90E and would have been an unthinkable 280E at high season! Farther down the coast in gorgeous seaside villages (Acciarolli and Casal Velino Marina in the Cilento area) we were averaging 65E per night. I believe if we had booked ahead we would have paid considerably more.

Room Finding tricks
Sometimes when I find myself in this situation, I go to the local cafe/bar and inquire if there ia a widow in town renting out a room. Most of the time I always find a good room at a great price.
