RE: trenitalia question
Actually, the pricing is on the website. Just select a date before 6/15 for your journey. Once the timetable comes up, click on the shopping cart on the right side. When that comes up, open the window on the top and select "Standard". You'll see the pricing. Those of us who post frequently on the site do this all the time.

RE: Car rental rates in France, and Germany
Douglas, the best rates for renting a car are in Germany. You don't mention for how long you are planning on renting and the price can be based on how long you rent the car. It will be with unlimited mileage. I rented a car for 21 days and it was actually cheaper than had I rented it for 20 days. In fact, I turned the car in a day early and was told I owed more money because my contract was for 21 days. The gentleman behind the counter was able to do some paper work adjustment so I did not have to pay the extra. Keep in mind that if you rent in one country and drop the car in another you will incur a huge drop off penalty so avoid that if at all possible. I always rent through a broker, gemut.com. Great rates and service. Check them out and copare rates with others. Good luck.

RE: Driving Europe? Need a GPS?
That is a great price Margaret. Congratulations. I saw where Brad posted this price from Costco on another thread. I was in Best Buy and saw the 920T for $376.00 and thought that was a great deal. I am not sure what the difference is between the 920 and 920T but for $299.00 I would go for the 920. I took the tomtom 910 to Europe last year and it worked great there. I think you will add to the growing list of people here who are singing the praises of having a gps for driving in Europe. Now you will have time to practice and get familiar with it before your trip. Good for you.

RE: overnight train moscow-st. petersburg
Hi. I took the overnight train (albeit about 15 years ago), but I thought it was really great. It's nice to do the traveling while you are sleeping, and yes, I really did sleep. There was no air conditioning that I remember, maybe an open window is about it. But I did sleep, yes. Plus, you get the nice tradition of the porter serving you hot tea (chai) at night, and in the morning.

RE: Bus from Florence to Nice?
Eurail schedules are probably the worst place to check for times and prices. They only list the few trains they sell tickets for, and charge way more than the European railways. Check times and schedules at the Italian rail network, http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html, or French national rail at http://tgv-europe.com. The one overnight train leaves at 11:30 and gets in around 8:40, and a couchette in a four-berth unit is as low as 45 Euro. Trenitalia doesn't have all its new schedules loaded after 15 June yet, so it may not come up. And booking through Trenitalia has become problematical for many U-S credit card holders. And you likely won't be able to get print-your-own tickets thru TGV-Europe for this trip. You may have to resort to calling Trenitalia to see if they can help. Even now, overnight trips in July are booked up. Try calling 011-39-06-684-754-75. You'll get a better chance of an english operator if calling during their daytime, 6 hrs ahead of EDT.

Spain in December, where can we go for warmth?
My daughter is studying in Segovia, Spain this fall. My husband, 15 yr old son and I will travel there in mid-December to spend 2 weeks before all coming home. We plan to start in Madrid and concentrate on southern Spain (Sevilla, Granada, etc.). The kids are excited about the possibility of snowboarding either north of Madrid or near Granada. But, they also want to experience some Spanish sun and sand. Would it be better for us to spend time on the Costa del Sol or Andalusia for some warm weather? Where is it most likely to be the warmest? How warm might it be? Thanks!

RE: Luggage sizes
I go to Europe every summer for one month during which I incorporate a RS tour. I only take one of RS 21" roller-bags. It was very difficult for me the first time to get everything I WANTED to take into that sized bag, but, after TWICE attending the RS "Packing Light" class at his headquarters in Edmonds, WA - I managed to do so. The fact that we were taking one of his tours where we were limited to one carry-on certainly helped. RS says he takes one carry-on sized suitcase for his three month European trip every year. Yes, he has plenty of practice. Believe me, for someone who was getting caught for having overweight suitcases every time I flew, it was a new experience. Taking large suitcases, that have to be checked in, only increases your chances of having the airlines loose something.

RE: Rome Pass Question
Definitely, get the Roma Pass. We were in Rome in April and were able to schedule the Borghese in 2 days. Not sure how feasible that is in June. We ordered the pass on line prior to departure to Italy. If you first use the pass for the Colosseum, forum one day and the Borghese the next, the pass pays for itself, plus you get to skip the lines at Colosseum and forum. The Bernini sculptures in the Borghese are beyond breathtaking. Plus you have the 3 days of metro and bus pass. Just make sure you plan well, as the pass is good for 3 consecutive days.

RE: Luggage sizes
Take Rick Steves' advice to only do carry on. I always overpack, but I did manage to limit myself to carry-on on a two week trip to Italy last fall and was grateful that I did so. You will end up having to lift and carry your baggage much more than you think you will - over your head to stash it into the luggage rack on a train, up several flights of at a hotel that doesn't have an elevator, on and off busses, vaporettos, subways, or other forms of mass transit. Just do some laundry every night or so in your room, you may know how many changes of clothes you are rotating but no one else in Italy will notice.

RE: salzburg - two nights or three?
Hi Megan,
... On our first visit to Salzburg, we had planned a three-day visit. We happened to find a brochure prepared in English by the official Tourist Bureau, we think, which happened to be called THREE DAYS IN SALZBURG. It covered many attractions, of course, and on a day-by-day, not-too-much-any-one-day, basis. That was long ago, but maybe it's still available at the Salzburg Visitors Bureau. If not, a person with your ingenuity could, no doubt, figure out what to do with those 3 days. One of the things we enjoyed a lot was visiting the little castle (with outside restaurant/ garden) up on top of Kapuzinerberg (it's the mountain directly across the Salzach river from the Hohensalzburg (Salzburg castle)). You don't need to hike up, necessarily, though we've done it twice. You can get a taxi to drive you to the top. Anyway, have a good time in Salzburg!.... P

The Pisa Airport is an easy connection from the Cinque Terre. We left Monterosso one morning to make a 10am flight out of Pisa. RE: One percent Visa Card fee
I have accounts with a Bank and Credit Union. Although some do not charge the ATM fee, they do seem to make some money on the exchange rate as they don't give the lowest rate. I found that with my Credit Union ATM card, I seem to get the interbank exchange rate and then they add a 1/2% or 1% fee (I can't remember which). When comparing that to other bank ATM cards I have used on the same day at the same ATM, it still turns out cheaper on my Credit Union card including the fee... Anyone else have the same type of experience on the actual exchange rate?

RE: Train travel between London and Chipping Campden
Chipping Campden is not served by rail, the only Cotswold town served by train is Moreton-on-Marsh. The Cotswolds are so well preserved, in part, because public transportation to and within this area has long been miserable. Without a car, to explore the Cotswolds use the 2 buses that hop through the region nearly hourly, lacing together main stops and ending at rail stations (stations outside the Cotswolds except for Moreton). In each case, there are about 8 buses/day; the entire trip takes about an hour; you pay the driver directly as you board. With the help of the TI, you can lace together a one way or return trip by public transportation, with some effort and patience. If you're traveling mainly between two train stations, remember that the Cotswolds villages are generally pretty clueless when it comes to the needs of travelers without a car and have no baggage check services, so you'll need to improvise as to that. And remember that bus service is poor on Saturday and almost nonexistent Sunday.

RE: Driving in France
My family and I have driven probably 2500-3000 miles in France. For the most part it is extremely enjoyable driving, especially the first time. I strongly agree with the post suggesting GPS use - it's a life-saver and stress-reducer. I use a small laptop plus Microsoft Autoroute, but there are several dedicated GPS devices out there with great software.
You'll see that French drivers like to follow closely, even at high speeds. Just try to get used to it, there's nothing that can be done, it's their way.
Roads are usually excellent. If by "Battle fields" you mean Normandy, the rural roads in Manche are narrow and aimless (it seems) but charming.
Along with the GPS system, we buy maps in-country. The best in our opinion are the kind that come in a roughly 8" x 11" spiral bound book. Available at gas stations, they are detailed and easy to use in the front seat.
There are lots of round-abouts in France. Cars in the round-about have the right of way, except for Etoile in Paris.

You might be better off if you can estimate how many days you were abroad during that ten year period. You will have to also indicate whether you were usually traveling for work, vacation, or visiting family and friends. But you don't have to detail where you went, exactly wehn, or what you spent.
I think if you spent more than a week out of the US you are better off to pick option 2 or 3.

Traveled abroad between '96 and '06? Used a credit card?
If you are an American who traveled abroad during that time period, chances are that you are a plaintiff in the class action lawsuit on credit card fees charged unlawfully during that time period. There is a settlement that has been approved by the federal court in the case, which will result in compensation for those affected. You can choose one of three settlement options--a $25 compensatory check, or you can get an estimated compensation if you know about how many days you spent out of the US during that period, or you can add up all the money you actually spent on your credit cards abroad during that time period and get a pro-rated share of the fees refunded. The deadline for filing a request for compensation is the end of this month!! You can file online. For more info, see www.ccfsettlement.com

For the record, ICN 771 leaves Venezia Santa Lucia at 00:04 and arrives at Roma Tiburtina at 06:52. However, this train appears on the Trenitalia timetables through 15 June, but not after that. Perhaps it will appear after the new timetables are fully loaded on the site--or perhaps it will be discontinued after 15 June. At any rate, a person can choose either female only or mixed couchette accommodations.

Use 22 inch...you won't regret packing less. The physics of the whole thing show the advantage. A 22 inch carry-on has about 2800 cu. in. storage space, while a typical 26 incher has @4700 cu in. That's almost double the space, and double the weight of clothing. The empty weight of the 22 incher is about 8 pounds....a 26 incher, 12 or 13. Check this board and Rick's packing light tips to travel in fine style with a 22 incher.

RE: Brittany
the area is full of them! Dinan and Fougeres, of course, as listed in Rick's book, but I also really liked Vitre. Vannes is also good, but not as small. If you're into nature, the whole coast is gorgeous- I would reccomend the cote de Granit Rose, for example- the lighthouse at plumonarch is really stunning. The megalyths at Carnac are definately also worth a peek, and the town itself is really nice there- on the beach, but with a residential area that still sports some thatched roofs. Feel free to pm me- I am just finishing up a semester in Rennes, the capital of Brittany.

Hi Victoria,
I disagree with Ron, I think a 26" luggage bag would be just fine. My wife and I were in Italy during the month of April and both of us took 27" Eagle Creek suitcases and neither one of us had any problem getting around even up and down steps.

Rome Pass Question
I've been reading your many helpful posts and appreciate your wonderful advice!
We are a family of 4 (2 adults & 2 teens) staying for 5 nights near the Lido so we will be commuting into Rome for 4 or 5 days in June. We plan to visit the Colosseum, forum, etc. and probably another museum or 2 (we don't have reservations yet for the Borghese but may try once we get there if possible). So shouldn't we purchase the Rome Pass? We will need to use the subway & bus daily and it seems like this would be an economical way for us to see Rome.
Thanks to Ron and all for your help so far!

Tours of the Vatican through the Vatican
I hear a lot about tours of the Vatican by Through Eternity, Angel Tours, etc. How many have taken the 2 hour tour through the Vatican itself?
It appears to me that it is 29.50 E which includes the tour, headset, and entrance fee. I'm also thinking it is a skip the line tour. Anyone know if it is good and if my information is correct?

Yes, a 26 inch bag is too big. Depending on how you are traveling, it will be hard to hoist around. Even with wheels you'll need to carry it places. You will be glad for paring down.

RE: Cash for hotels in europe
Depending on how much cash you need you can either use an ATM before and after it resets for the day (new daily limit) or open a couple of accounts here and take a couple of debit cards (or more) to increase your daily limit.
Another alternative is to ask your bank how to up your daily limit. It used to be easy to set up a higher limit (not sure if it still is).

RE: Travel Plans
For me, there would be too much traveling. Assuming you leave the US on the 26th and depart Italy on the 8th, you have 12 nights. I find it easier to figure nights when doing planning. With that time frame, I would do 3 nights in Venice, 3 nights in Florence, 2 nights in Siena and 4 nights in Rome.

RE: Rome Shuttle Limousine
Hi. Just returned from Rome. We used that company. Picking us up from the airport was no problem, no hidden fees. However, they did forget to pick us up at the hotel to take us back to the airport. After checking out of the hotel and waiting outside for them, I had to go back to the hotel desk, call them. They had to locate the driver. Eventually a regular city cab picked us up, but it was stressful. I really should have called the day before to confirm the time. That probably would have avoided the situation.

RE: Paris to Arles, Arles to Amsterdam
For complete timetables go to www.bahn.de and click on the drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner for English. After you get summary timetables, click on "Details for all" to see the connecting points. You'll see that several changes are required, but it's not as complicated as it looks.
For some times of the day for your routes there still are some Loisirs discount fares available if you book NOW at www.voyages-sncf.com for Paris-Arles. The same is true for Arles-Paris (SNCF). For Paris-Amsterdam (www.thalys.com) there is a youth fare for persons under 26 which is half of the standard fare. You can book in English on the Thalys site by choosing France and English. Again, book NOW to get the best fare.
To get the discount fares on the SNCF site you'll need to book in French. For instructions on how to do that, go here. Or drop me a PM and I'll give you more advice.

RE: Sharing a meal in Italy
We just returned from a trip to Italy, and here's our experience. We are small people; and, frankly we find it impossible to consume both the primi and secondi served in most Italian restaurants, even though it's true that the portions are often (but not always) smaller than those in the U.S. It helps to eyeball the other tables to get a sense of portion size, or you can ask your waitperson. E.g., we had a waitress advise us that the gnocchi with clams was both very large and filling. We split it and were happy we did. We often shared one or both of the courses, sometimes with an added antipasto. Once or twice I sensed a whiff of disapproval from the waiter, but maybe that was just my imagination. Nothing overt. Often at lunch a set menu is offered, and the portions may be smaller than when ordering ala carte. Especially when you have children along, Italian restaurant staff tend to be flexible and understanding.

Those three are the some the most popular/successful on-line travel sites in the world, so they must be doing something right:) But, be aware that most hotel bookings with these sites require you to pay upfront the cost of the entire reservation in advance. You can usually cancel with a $20 penalty. I prefer to use www.booking.com If you're planning on staying at chain type hotels you can often get better deals buy going directly to the company's website.

RE: Train - round trip, "carriage" and seat selections
(continued) Yes, you will have to book again to get back from Florence to Rome. Have you already registered and received a password from Trenitalia? If not, registering while you're purchasing tickets has proven problematic. Try registering first and awaiting the password, then purchasing. There have been reports from many Americans that American credit cards cannot be used. If not, you can purchase the tickets immediately you arrive in Rome. Termini station has many self-serve kiosks that display in English, and there are helpful people around to assist you. As for the seats themselves....many of the faster trains have the vast majority of seats facing forwards. If you book on-line, you'll have to take your chances, but they're pretty good odds.

RE: Railpass vs German Twin pass vs Bayern Ticket??
With any railpass, the pass covers only the use of the rails. You will have to pay a supplement (reservation) for the use of the accommodations. $255 sounds a little high for that. If you book well in advance from the Austrian Rail website, you might get a discount fare for the whole package (rail and accommodations). You need to check out the prices and compare both ways.
That night train, by the way, leaves Salzburg at 44 min after midnight and ends in Zürich at 6:20, so you are not really getting much time for your money. You might do better with a day train.
As for Berchtesgaden to Salzburg, there is a bus, the Watzmann Express, that leaves hourly from the Berchtesgaden Hbf for the Salzburg Hbf. I'm not sure what one-way costs, but a day pass for the local buses costs €8,50 per person. That might be the best way.

RE: Railpass vs German Twin pass vs Bayern Ticket??
OK, so if I'm getting the right info...
Days 1-3 should be good with a Bayern Ticket, since it will be all Munich and Berchtesgaden. Day 4 (Salzburg) is covered until we leave on the nite train to Bern. Our travel agent (worthless really) is saying that nite train will be $255 EACH for a couchette. Eeek! With my bad math skills, that would mean $500 for the single trip, plus the $439 for the German Twin pass 2nd class. Am I figuring this right? If so, then the Eurail passes for $800 might be better?? Our travels in Switzerland will be by a friend's car, so no worries once we hit there. ALTHOUGH.... we will need a rail back out of SW to Nuremburg....

RE: Railpass vs German Twin pass vs Bayern Ticket??
The Bayern-Ticket can be purchased at a counter for €29 (€2 extra for personal service) or from an automat for €29. To see how to use an automat, go to Reise_Deutschland and follow the links to "Ticket Automats" under FAQs. The Bayern-Ticket is valid for regional trains all over Bavaria. Salzburg and Kufstein are considered border stations and the ticket is valid to them. It is not valid all the way to Innsbruck nor anywhere in Switzerland. A Bayern-Ticket would be valid to Lindau, which is just around the lake (Bodensee) from Switzerland.

RE: What is a quaint little village to relax in Europe?
Yes, unless they have a very bad winter, they should be operating at that time. I was there a few years ago, for a week starting Dec 31, and they were skiing. The biggest ski mountain in the area, the Nebelhorn is only about 7000 ft at the top, but the town of Oberstdorf is at just over 2000 ft, so you get almost 5000 ft of vertical, more, I think, than any ski resort in the US. The town of Oberstdorf naturally looks like what Vail tries to look like. There is a Therme (what the Germans call a Spa) in Oberstdorf as well as one in nearby Sonthofen.
See the websites for Oberstdorf and Kleinwalsertal.

We were in Chamonix last summer at about the same time. It was COLD! We had planned to go over Mt. Blanc in the gondola to Italy and found it iced over and impassable due to weather. I do not know the current conditions but be prepared. We had to modify our travel plans significantly due to this news. The town itself gets chilly at night and it's at a much lower elevation. RE: First-time trip to Italy - advice please
Your first mistake would be to buy a railpass. Tickets are generally much cheaper when bought there, especially several days in advance. As you are likely over 26, you would be forced to buy a first-class Eurail, which is far more expensive than 2d class tix. Your itinerary is doable. We'd suggest doing Switzerland then Florence then Rome and Ercolano last. This way you would be going in same direction

RE: Clothes in 1st Week of June? (London & Paris) ~ 1st time Europe
I concur with Tom (and find the opinion of others quite humorous). You are not going to affect others' views of Americans by wearing shorts in very warm weather. Your government has done that for you already, so no piling on! Zip-off plants are a nice compromise when it gets hot; built-up metros can be hellish in summer, and the lack of a/c will wilt even a lifelong Texan. Yes, the big cities are very fashion-conscious and long pants are the order of the day, but out in the country and on hot days, don't hesitate to wear shorts. Play it conservative (khaki is nice) and your money will still be accepted everywhere.

RE: Assisi
Yes, we had a friend recommend that we do this and for us, it was a most beautiful hill town. Just stunning. It's a 2.5hr. train journey each way. Once there, go next door to the little book shop and buy a round-trip bus ticket. Most tour books start you out at the Basilica and then you walk up and up the hills. It's not bad but it's up. What we recommend is to take the Line C bus from the front of the train station to the last stop at the top and STROLL DOWN. It's really great. We ended up at the Basilica. Just superb and scenic. The shops are quite nice.
Another note, being a traditional town, the nicer places to eat close between 4-7. We missed a nice dinner. However, we had our best gelato in Italy in Assisi. Look for the shop on the right coming down that has all of the great pastries in the window.

RE: Car parking at Mont St. Michel
Hi Patti -- as a previous respondent noted, both the parking areas are open; there are guards at the gates to take the parking fee. When we were there in May last year we parked overnight and did not experience any problems but we did not leave any luggage in the car. BTW you'll probably want to allow more than 3 hours for MSM. It will take you a bit to drive up the causeway and park, and then I'd allow 45 minutes to walk from the parking lot up to the Abbey (the Grand Rue can be very crowded). Allow about 2 hours to fully tour the Abbey, then another 45 mins. back down; and you'll probably need a meal in there somewhere (there's a decent little cafe in the grocery store at the start of the causeway). It is definitely a not-to-miss site, though, so even if it takes you a bit longer to see it than you'd planned, it is well worth your time. Hope you have a wonderful visit!

RE: Frankfurt Hotel
Hello Alexina. I recommend go to a hotel in Mainz, located near the train station. Trains go from Mainz directly to the Frankfurt Airport. Hotels in Frankfurt are expensive when there are trade fairs in Frankfurt. If you insist on being at a hotel in Frankfurt, try Hotel Manhattan at Dusseldorfer Strasse 10. Hotel Europa at Baseler Strasse 17. Hotel Wiesbaden at Baseler Strasse 52. They are very close to the train station. If you do not want to be that close to the train station, try Pension Backer at Mendelssohnstrasse 92 (near the botanical gardens). The Frankfurt airport (Flughafen) is a 12-minute train ride from the Frankfurt train station.

I'd put in a bid for Reit im Winkl, just across the border from Austria and close to Salzburg.
In Austria it would be Neustift in the Stubai Valley.
Most other popular places will be booked, so you need to be creative (and book early also)

RE: Railpass vs German Twin pass vs Bayern Ticket??
To get a Bayern Ticket, you ask for one or select one from machines in Germany ( in Bavaria). Each Lander (like our states) has a ticket like the Bayern but what makes it so good is that Bayern Tix can be used for travel to Salzburg,Innsbruck and parts of Switzerland, as well. You do NOT need a Eurailpass . While we dont know the details of a Twin Pass, we doubt that you would save a great deal over buying point-to-point tix in Germany. It is likely that you would pay MORE for a pass

RE: First-time trip to Italy - advice please
Looks like you have to come to a meeting of the minds. Fortunately, you'll get it all done in one geographic area.
The outdoor museum your husband wants to visit is called Ballenberg. It's located up the train route from Interlaken in the mid of the beautiful Berner Oberland. It's worth a trip, estimate at least 4 hours on site. (Incidentally, similar outdoor museums are located in Tirol, Carinthia (Austria), in Slovakia, and elsewhere).

RE: Budget Accomodations in Antibes, Provence, Corsica
You will have a hard time seeing much in Provence without a car. We stayed outside of Isle sur le Sorgue last fall and it was very nice. But we had a car in which we could travel all over Provence. There are trains that go between the main towns, but not much else for mass transit. There are a lot of small places in the countryside associated with farms and vineyards.

Railpass vs German Twin pass vs Bayern Ticket??
It is just my husband and myself. Here's our itinerary and resulting dilemma:
Day 1- arrive in Munich and tour around city Day 2- Taking group tour to Neuschwanstein Day 3- Morning train to Bertchesgaden, stay nite there Day 4- Bus to Salzburg, tour city, take nite train to Bern Switzerland (couchette?). My dilemma: I thought a Bayern ticket would be perfect for everything up to the nite train. Will we need a full Eurail pass for this? How does one get a Bayern ticket?? To make things worse, we are winging the second half of our trip after Bern, but we are surely going up to Nuremburg and Aachen. If we got a German Twin pass, that should cover us for then too, right?? I'm soooo confused!

Paris to Arles, Arles to Amsterdam
Can anyone tell me the best and least expensive way to get to Arles from Paris and then from Arles to Amsterdam? I do not wish to drive. I am traveling with my 20-year-old daughter and I assume that rail is the best way to go. We will be traveling from Paris to Arles on July 11th and then from Arles to Amsterdam on July 15th. Should we try to buy tickets in advance or wait? We will be flying out of Amsterdam and back to US on July 20th.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, would it be better to purchase the ferry ticket online or should I wait and buy at the marina?

RE: Travel Plans
I think it's a little much, considering the short number of days, but if you're energetic go for it. You'll be spending some good time at train stations and on the trains, so you have even less time than you may think for sightseeing, but spending time in an Italian train station is also a nice contrast to everyday life, so it's hard to call it lost time.
Does the Pisa side trip come out of your 2 days in Siena? There's not much to do in Pisa except for a quick look at the tower. Perhaps work that in on the way to Cinque Terre taking a taxi to the tower and back to train if necessary. That would give more time in Siena.
Plan your Florence time well and get your museum tickets in advance so you don't waste a lot of precious time standing in line. Most things are closed on Monday. Do your homework and you'll do fine.

First-time trip to Italy - advice please
Am planning a 2 week trip this fall for myself and husband. Budget is limited, so carry-ons & plain lodgings is the plan (like most of our travel). Honeymooned in Europe 18 yrs ago, drove Romantic Road to Munich, night train to Paris, then England-but it was a long time ago. I'm a archeology buff & would like to see Rome and Florence and Herculaneum, he likes architecture, beaches & bars & would like to see this outdoor building museum in Switzerland. Not sure what is the best plan for this and would appreciate suggestions on itinerary and inexpensive places to stay. Would a railpass be a good idea? Gloria

RE: Men's Clothing
I've been looking online for photos of Italian street scenes, searching for the "everyday look" of the typical Italian man, age about 50. I haven't had any luck. Mostly all I find are photos of teenagers or tourists.
But I picture mostly dark, subdued clothing without a lot of busy patterns...the opposite of the stereotypical tourist to Hawaii.
I lean toward long sleeve shirts in all weather. Contrary to what most will think, if you're in direct sunlight you are cooler in long sleeves (the desert dwellers have always known this) because the sun heats up your clothes rather than your skin. With the layer of air between the shirt and the skin, you're protected from the heat. Same goes for shorts!
When you're in the shade, roll the sleeves up to let the breeze evaporate perspiration. But when you return to the sun, roll the sleeves down.
I learned this as a child from my grandfather, a carpenter who worked all day in the Arkansas sun before the days of air conditioning.

RE: Female alone on Italian Train
I agree with Larry. I wouldn't take an overnight train for such a short trip. I take a late afternoon/early evening train and take a snack or sandwich and water along. That way I've used up the entire day and spend the time I would normally go to dinner and stroll around on the train. I catch up on postcards, journal, reading, etc. as well as enjoy the view from the train. Then I get a good night's sleep in a hotel and am ready to go first thing in the morning. What shorter trips do you have planned? If you are going to Florence or any other town between Venice and Rome you would probably want to see them as you go rather than backtrack.

RE: Train from Rome to Venice. Overnight?
My daughter and I were excited to take an overnight train from Basel to Venice. I am not squeamish, and I can tolerate a lot, however the experience was horrible! We booked one with 6/compartment, though I don't think 4 would have helped the situation. Everyone was asleep when we boarded just before 2200. We tried to make our way to the top two berths without disturbing anyone, however with 2 people climbing in and trying to settle our luggage, this wasn't possible. Finally got settled, when our "conductor" came for our passports and passed out sheets and blankets. I am NOT a whiner or complainer when traveling, I like to go with the flow, however the compartment was intolerably hot (it was cool outside and on the rest of the train)I tried to relax for another hour, but honestly thought I would pass out. I ended up standing in the corrider for awhile when they finally moved us to a cool compartment. Of course another big CF ensued...My advice: save your euros and sleep sitting up!

RE: Zurich -> Cinque Terra
A couple of thoughts. From Intelaken Ost to Milan, you will change trains in Spiez and possibly Brig. This all takes place within 70-80 minutes of your departure. Next, you will receive a ticket for each train your are on for the journey. For your initial R and IC trains, no seat reservations are required. You can hop off and on a later similar train as long as it's between the departure and arrival stations on your ticket. However, your train from Spiez or Brig will be an EC or CIS train that does require seat reservations. It also has a firm departure time for the train. No hopping off and hopping on a later train. Once you're on that train, it's going to Milan.
Next, what your can do is make your train run from Milan to Montegrosso for later in the day so that when you arrive in Milan, you have 3-4 hours before your next train. There are 3-5 stops between Brig and Milan. You could book a ticket from Interlaken Ost to Arona and from Arona to Milan. However, you're playing with fire as you have to make sure that you will meet your Milan/Monterosso train on time. Walking around Milan seems doable.

I bought a small print, etching or watercolor of each city we visited. I got back home last night, can't wait to pick up some frames and arrange them.

A small scarf or two for friends , ditto t-shirts.
PS regarding photos, a friend we met in Florence, lost 5 weeks of photos when her camera was stolen, over 800 pix! Next day I downloaded mine to a disc at an internet point (they did it for me)and continued to do that every few days.I felt much better!

RE: Latest Fashion in Italy
I am a 52 year old woman, traveled with my 25 year old daughter(who loves "chic") just got back from a 2 week stint in Italy. We both noticed people who stood out like sore thumbs. The point is not that you look like a tourist, that may be inevitable, but not to look like a trashy/tacky/garish/disrespectful tourist.
This worked well for us, and we "blended" to the extent possible. 3-4 pairs lightweight slacks (gray, cocoa, khaki and black) Several lightweight t-shirts(no slogans or pix), one black dress, one pair sandals, one pair shoes. I wore the same pair of basic silver earrings for two weeks, my daughter dressed up her look with a couple cheap bracelets and a necklace. You can buy cheap Pashminas/shawls/scarves over there which dress up your look and are lightweight souvenirs.
Did laundry twice (plus undies in the sink)This was more than enough and we looked fine. Use common sense and respect the attitudes and dress of the countries which you visit. Have fun!

RE: Anyone use Roam Simple mobile phones?
Since I started this thread, I should add some comments on our experience with Roam Simple.
In my view, price (SIM and the refurbished phone) was reasonable, phone and SIM were delivered very promptly.
We didn't do a whole lot of calling while we were in the UK. Our bill for calls and texts came to about $12.50, less than the cost of a round of "sticky toffee pudding" desert for the three of us.
It was very handy to know the phone number ahead of time -- we were able to email it to relatives who were then able to get in touch with us (free incoming calls) immediately upon our arrival.
In some of the more remote parts of the Highlands of Scotland, signal quality wasn't as good as we get at home, but that was due to being remote. In the cities, the T-Mobile network they use was just fine.
We now have a phone which we can get SIMs for, for future trips. We took digital pictures of a few of the text messages we got, since we won't be able to access them here.

RE: London and the Cotswolds in September
You are unlikely to need "heavy coats" in September. A waterproof outer garment is useful. About the weather, go to weather.com, and put the name of a larger town near the area you are interested in, wait until the site finds a town that it has data for, when the current weather comes up look for the button that says, I think it is, "averages and records" or something like that. That will give you long-term average weather data by month and is a better and more reliable guide for you than those of us here saying, I was there last year in September and the weather was blah blah blah, since the weather from one year to the next can vary quite a bit.

Assuming you do not have a car, you could easily spend the entire time in Paris and save a lot of money on transportation cost. If you want to do more than that, I agree with Adam that you should do Paris to Avignon and limit in a van or something similar it to that. There is a lot you can see in Avignon that does not require a car and if you want to see something located outside of Avignon you would have the option of taking a tour during the day from one of the tour van companies.

Welcome to the world of low fare airlines' false economy.
There is a bus running directly from Paris (Porte Maillot) to Beauvais. It leaves around 3 hrs before flight time and costs €13. You can use the rail system in Paris to get from CDG to Porte Maillot. From CDG take the RER B line to Chatelet-Les Halles, then the Metro 1 line to Porte Maillot. I'm not sure of the fare, but it has to be only a few Euro.
