Length of time required between tourist visits to UK from US

What is the length of time required from one visit to the next to the UK from US? I was on a tour in England from Oct 10 thru Oct. 17, 2012, and was wondering how long I need to wait before going again. I would like to return to the UK for 3 weeks this year, but wasn't sure when I could enter the UK again. Thanks!

There is no legal "length of time" gap. We are not covered by the EU/Schengen gauleiters' rules about 90 days in 180.

The limit is what an immigration officer might decide - if you turn up every Monday and leave each Friday, always claiming to be on holiday, then that might well ring alarm bells over whether you are in fact working here, for example.

But what you describe is fine.

Thanks Keith. All I've seen so far is that a tourist must go and return within 6 months, but that seems a little vague if I wanted to go again say every year. . I was thinking it might be nice to spend a month or two in England every year or so as there is so much to see there for a dedicated history buff.
