Train ticket fare between Florence-Rome ? Rome-Venice?

Just trying to get an idea. The Trenitalia website does not show the prices. (youth, 2nd class)

Abraham,

Figure around $50.00, depending on the class you chose.

This was an interesting question for me because my 22 year old son is coming this summer to visit and I wondered what his tickets would cost – so I called Trenitalia here in Rome because I had NEVER seen a youth discount advertised. Now I know why – they do not have one! The only way you can get a “youth discount,” according to the rep I talked to was to buy a “Carta Verde” or buy a Single Country Rail Europe Youthpass. Here is the info she sent to me ---

RAILEUROPE - “You don't have to be a student to travel with Rail Europe Italy Youth rail passes. If you're between 12 and 26 years of age you can travel with an Italy Youthpass.”

Different prices are available for different lengths of travel --- a little pricey unless you travel often. So if you’re going to try back and forth – or often on rail a single country Youthpass may be the best bet!

“The Carta Verde (Green card) is for young people from 12 to under 26 years . The Carta Verde costs 40 euro and allows young people discounts of 10% off standard fares (first and second class) on all national trains, including wagon lits and couchettes and up to 25 per cent off when travelling around Europe. The Verde card is valid for one year and covers travel made on regional trains but does not cover reservation fees. As with other railcards offered, it cannot be combined with other discounts. The Carta Verde can be purchased at any station Ticket desk and Trenitalia Travel Agents.”

She advised me that even with a Carta Verde, it was often cheaper to purchase an AMICA ticket - and she was correct. Check out these comparisons on a One-Way Rome to Florence 2nd class ticket:

Standard Class Ticket - €36.10

AMICA Class Ticket - €28.90

Carta Verde Class Ticket - €32.50

At €40 for the card you would have to make a few trips to “break even.” Yet the card is GOOD FOR ONE YEAR and it does not require the 24 hour “pre-buying” requirement of the AMICA!

My son will be here for a few weeks (FREE RENT!!!!) so we will probably get him the Carta Verde so he will be able to travel often and with spontaneity!

Good Luck! Ron

If you choose a date too far in the future, the website won't give you any info. I picked dates only a week away, just to get an idea of cost. There is a confusing list of fare options to pick from, so I just scrolled through to get a rough estimate. There is a "Familia" plan for travelling with kids. I came up with 93 euros for 2 adults and 2 kids. By the way, previous posters say you can't actully purchase on the Trenitalia site using American credit cards. Good Luck
