Need help finding budget priced accommodations in France and Italy

I am trying to locate budget priced hotels/hostels/B&Bs in France near Paris and in Italy near Venice. There will be 4 adults and one child (3 yrs old). Everything I find near Venice is upwards to $50-$90 a night per person. Our budget is $30-$35 a night per person. We will be traveling for three weeks throughout the whole of Europe and we are trying to find budget places to stay. Can anyone help us????? Thanks so much!!!!

Amanda, how long will you be in Paris? With 5 people in your group you might think about renting an apartment, if you're going to be there more than 2 nights. Also, take a look at Rick's Paris, Italy, and France books for budget hotel suggestions, and also search this site [there's a q&a on How to search the website on all the Traveler's Helpline boards]; many people have asked about budget lodging and gotten lots of recommendations. You may well need to spend a bit more in Paris and Venice than budgeted, but you can probably balance things out by spending less on lodging in the countryside, especially if you are not travelling in high season. Good luck and have fun!

Two of my favorites (outside of Rick's books) are www.hostelworld.com and www.cheapaccommodation.com.

You probably should consider a hotel not a hostel since there are 5 in your group.

I know from experience, hostels charge per person.

A few years ago my sister, her 8yr old, and I spent 3 weeks in Italy (including Venice) staying mostly in convents. They were simple, clean and in great locations. At that time I had to fax requests, but now I see there is a website you can book through: monestarystays.com

A tall order for Venice,so ck into adjoining town of Mestre. Many buses from Mestre go right to venice train station, where you can walk the canal areas or just hop a boat to cruise the canal.

For Paris, you will do much better with an apartment for 5 people. Try Vacation in Paris (www.VacationIn Paris.com. It is an American company (you pay by credit card in dollars) and they rent by the night. A weekly stay in not necessary.
