2 weeks in Greece

Athens/ Nafplio then Mykonos & Santorini. How do you suggest we divide the time. Should we put Nafplio on the end of trip? Are these good choices ? We love dinning, shopping and people watching. We prefer not too structured sightseeing. Any suggestions ? Carol

If you plan to visit the islands it's always a good idea to save Athens for the end of your trip so you have plenty of time to get back to the mainland in case of ferry breakdowns, cancellations because of high winds, or airline strikes. Most likely you won't have a problem but there's nothing that will ruin your vacation quicker than the stress of a last-minute dash to Athens for your flight home.

Carol - Lee is spot on as far as ending the trip in Athens. Six days each in Santorini and Mykonos will show you that it doesn't get much better!!! Both Islands have so much to offer and to see. Transportation is also simple - rent a three wheeler and enjoy the splendour of both Islands. Many great restaurants, shops, and Cafes. In Athens be sure to take the single line train from Piraeus up to La Plaka - One of the main shopping areas in Athens - Monisteraki market is right there when you exit the train and it's a nice walk up to The Acropolis. You definitely do not need a guide!! Nafplio I would save for another time so as not to rush through three great places.

Carol one vital thing that you did not share with us at all is WHEN you are going. The advice given is fine, if you are going between April and September. But if you are going October through March, quite different. It would be nice if people who ask for advice would give this small additioonal piece of information.

I agree it's a great time to go ... I have visited many times in Late May early june and several times at my 2nd-favorite time -- September. Particularly if you like to swim, the ocean is at its best in September, and as they say, the crowds have gone. And YES Nafplio should come at the end -- because one thing about September -- those Meltemi winds can kick up and delay either planes or ferries sometimes. But having a mainland destination at the last gives you a little flex- time ... also, eases you back into mainland life. PLUS: I personally find Nafplio, out of all the places I've been, the MOST enjoyable for shopping for quality items, be it clothing, souvenirs, objet d'art, trinket etc. Why? because it's a favorite getaway place for Athenians with good taste. Enjoy!

Thanks, with this info I think I'm finally ready to book. Do you think I should do it myself online or go through a travel agency ? Any suggestions?

You have plenty of time. Book for yourself but be advised that some hotels won't book so far ahead of time. You might need to write ahead and ask when bookings will be accepted.
