Queen's Birthday Amsterdam 2010

We will be in Amsterdam for this event. I have watched several youtube videos and seen photos.

Will Amsterdam be selling orange beads, hats, leis etc. that the tourist can purchase?

We saw such stuff for sale all over the place when we visited. Remember, this is a nation built by merchants. Should be a lot of fun. We left in advance of Queen's Day, but I had read that travel into and out of Amsterdam can be a headache on either end of the holiday, and saw hotel rates skyrocket around the event. Have a great time.

This year's Queen's day may be a more sober celebration after what happened last year:

I was thinking the same thing as Michael. I'm sure there will still be festivities but some of the normal stuff probably can't happen anymore because of a concern for security. Hopefully heightened security won't dampen the spirit of the event.

Yes, I think you will be able to stock up on anything/everything orange.

Thanks for all the help. We rented a canal house apartment on the Herengracht so the Queen's birthday will be our last day there. Luckily, my landlord did not raise the rate for this celebration. He did warn us though about the festivities.

I am looking forward to trying Indonesian food. Dutch food sounds very interesting.

Sandy -

I was in Amsterdam a couple of days after the 2008 Queensday Celebration and everything was still decked out in orange. Hard to tell what it will be like next year after last years events, but I know that typically it is wall to wall people. Tourist activities are not a good idea on that day - you won't be able to get anywhere. Just thought you would want to know.

Enjoy!!
