Zurich to Florence

Need advice. We would like to drive from Zurich, Switzerland to Florence, Italy at the end of December. Is this a bad idea? I am not too keen about heights or curvy roads but I hear there are tunnels that make it less difficult. We have an SUV with winter tires and chains. Any advice would be appreciated? Or is it better to just take the train. (We are Americans living in Germany.)

You might want to contact the German equivalent of the AAA over there for road advice during winter (and thousands of Germans drive to Italy all winter long).

You can find the ADAC via the link.

Snow chains can be rented from gas stations midway through your journey and then dropped off at another station further down the road. Sometimes membership in the German automobile club ADAC is necessary for this service, but not always. The cost is low and is based on km's traveled. Stop as soon as you think you may need the chains, because supplies are limited at each station.

Mel - I actually made that drive a few years ago and , to me, It was amazing!! But - heights - Yes - Curvy roads - Yes - So, I'm not too sure you would like it. But the views , the stops along the way for photo ops, Fantastic!!
