Late December/Early January Weather in Portugal and Spain

Hello, my wife and I are looking to travel in Portugal and Spain from just before Christmas and to Jan. 2. What has been the weather trends have folks who noticed who have traveled during this period? T-shirts, long pants and a fleece for evening comfort? Or throw a pair of shorts in the suitcase just in case? Looking forward to hearing suggestions...David, Wimbledon,UK via San Francisco Bay Area

Where exactly are you going? And how cold tolerant are you? Madrid is likely to be pretty chilly, even downright cold, with freezing temperatures not unusual. It will definitely be colder than San Francisco, on average. I think shorts would be very optimistic, but I know people who wear shorts all winter, so YMMV.
