Italy in March
My husband and I and 2 sons (15 & 23) have tickets to fly in and out of Rome March 11-25. The only request I have from them is Venice. Other than what would you recommend for an itinerary for that time of year? Some slower time in the country-side perhaps, more ruins than museums.

If its ruins you want, then head south to Pompeii and Paestum.
For Renaissance charm, Florence. For simply charming, Tuscany.
Too much to list here.
Read the book Rick Steves' Italy, and check out the Italy page on this web site.
Hi Lisa. Too bad you can't fly open-jaw...it would sure help to maximize your time in Italy so that you wouldn't have to spend so much time back-tracking to get back to Rome for your return flight. You might ask the airlines if it's possible to change your tickets. If not, here's what I would propose:
Days 1-5: Rome & maybe an excursion to Ostia Antica, Tivoli or Orvieto (the kids would enjoy the underground tour & St. Patrick's well there)
Days 6-11: Tuscany; maybe stay at an agriturismo & drive to hill towns, i.e. Siena, Volterra, San Gimignano, Montepulciano, Pienza, etc & take train to Florence for 1 day - you don't want to drive there.
Days 12-14: Venice
Day 15: Back to Rome for return flight
thanks--great tips and the overall itinerary is what I was thinking. I'll check into your specific suggestions. In and out of Rome was the best I could do on our budget.
