When for Italy & Southern France
My wife and I are going to Italy and France for a month starting mid-April. Considering those dates and the weather I thought it would be wise to fly into Rome and see Southern Italy first then work our way north flying home out of Paris. However, when I learned that the boats on the Amalfi Coast do not begin operating until late April I wonder if we should reverse our plans and fly into Paris and out of Rome. What is your advice?

Your plan is good for possibly getting better weather in Paris later in the Spring. "April in Paris" is cold most years.
It depends on where you wanted to go on the boats on the Amalfi Coast? Going to Capri, or just up and down the coast? The ferry season opens from Easter weekend. There are alternatives to the boats, however to most all destinations.
You might want to check out WikiTravel to see all the transportation connections available out of Naples.
Are you saying, Steve, that the boats will starting running on April 4th in 2010? If your information is correct and Dennis is not arriving till mid-April, he would be fine according to you.
Steve, I appreciate your quick response. I also was unaware of WikiTravel, which looks very helpful in planning our trip. If the Easter beginning of ferries and other boats around the Amalfi Coast is correct that answers my question. RS' Italy 2010 is where I got the late April starting time and I believe he mentioned that the ferries do not run around the smaller towns until early June. Any thoughts on clarifying this discrepancy?
Each boat line has a different schedule. You should check the ferry schedules for each place you want to travel to. The list at WikiTravel was pretty complete and had links to the company's web site.
To be more specific, Coop Sant'Andrea season starts service usually the Thursday before Easter (map on the left) and Metro del Mare's (Naples) season begins June 1.
A ferry is not needed to travel the coast (there are roads and buses), but of course you have to take a boat to Capri, and they run all year round.
