Transportation from Lake Orta to Hotel near Malpensa

I will be finishing my Italy trip on 5/30/10 in Orta San Giulio and will be flying out of Malpensa the following morning. I would like to spend most of the day just relaxing at Lake Orta, then take some form of transportation to a hotel close to the airport late in the day. Will this be possible, easy, inexpensive???

Tourshuttle.com can arrange for transport from there to Malpensa, and probably drop you off at a close-in airport hotel. Cheap? no. 95,00€. Most shuttles run near 100€ for the one way trip.

Reaching Malpensa by public transport from Orta is much more complicated. You could take the a cab to Arona and then the bus to MXP.

Or check the trains try the following site

http://www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html

and enter FROM=Milan, destination=Orta-Miasino (the Orta station serves also Miasino town) You will then have to take the Express bus to MXP from Milano Centrale.

Your hotel by the lake should have many recommendations for transfers back to MXP.

Will you be on the Village Italy tour? If so, the guide will help coordinate rides near the end of the tour. I took this tour a little over a year ago and several of us shared a van to Malpensa which made it more reasonable.

Thank you both, Steve and Laurie, for your suggestions. Yes, Laurie...I will be on the Village Italy Tour and that did occur to me. I hope there will be others who will choose to fly out the following day and will want transportation late in the day. We'll see. How did you like the Village Italy tour?

I'm told that the RS tour guides help arrange transportation to Milan or Malpensa. But I continue to wonder why they end the tour there. It's a ridiculously difficult place to travel from without a car and not so easy even with a car.

And, by the way, you know how you'd feel if you loved the Cinque Terre in the 1970s and then Rick Steves arrived? That's how I feel about the RS tours going to Orta.

I loved it. I have been on two other RS tours since and the Village tour is still my absolute favorite. You will have a tremendous time....enjoy.

I stayed an extra day in Orta and the hotel took me to the train station in the AM. It was an enjoyable train ride into Milan Centrale.

(I was also on the RS Village Italy Tour and LOVED IT!!!)
