Pompeii, Herculaneum, Vesuvius, and Sorrento by Circumvesuviana?
i'm planning to visit pompeii, herculaneum and vesuvius in one day and reach sorrento by evening to sleep. how would i take the circumvesuviana? what i am hoping is that i can take the circumvesuviana from naples to herculaneum then from herculaneum to to vesuvius by bus and then vesuvius to sorrento but it does not sound possible from rick steves books or at least he doesnt mention that you can. is it possible to connect circumvesuviana from herculaneum to vesuvius or can the circumvesuviana only connect from naples to one of those destinations and back? does that mean i will have to go all the way back to naples just to take the circumvesuviana out to sorrento? is there a bus schedule out there for the circumvesuviana? this is all so confusing. thanks so much for your help!

Besides doing too much in one day, (just Pompeii alone was a full half day of looking around for us). You want to go to the top of the volcano AND see the Herculaneum ruins? Prepare for a very long day. We did Pompeii by car, which we dumped as soon as we hit Sorrento. The drive alone from Pompeii to Sorrento took a nearly couple of hours due to the traffic. Luckly the train won't have to fight the bumper to bumper that can happen on the road to Sorrento.
Circumvesuviana trains go to Pompeii, Herculaneum, and Mount Vesuvius. For Pompeii, get off at Pompeii Scavi stop, 36 minutes from Naples. Trains for Herculaneum (Ercalano) and Mount Vesuvius depart several times an hour from Naples (don't take the Sorrento line). For the Ercalano archaeological site, get off at Ercalano Scavi, 17 minutes from Naples. To get to Mount Vesuvius, get off the train at Ercolano station where you can catch a Compagnia Trasporti Vesuviani bus outside the station.

i'm beginning to realize it is a bit too much to do all in one day. i think i will focus on pompeii and vesuvius. i know i can get from pompeii to vesuvius by bus but how would i get to sorrento? would i take the circumvesuviana from pompeii? thanks for the great advice!
Circumvesuviana will take you to Sorrento. Check the maps and schedule links I posted above.

Both Ercolano Scavi and Pompeii Scavi are on the same Naples to Sorrento line. Took it myself a couple of weeks ago.
