What to do with 3 days in Ireland?

Hello fellow travelers! We will be in Ireland next July for three days. I would like to get out of Dublin and see the countryside. Is there anyway to see a bit of Ireland with three days? We wont have a car, just public transport. Thanks for all the help! It is extremely appreciated!

You can day trip to Belfast. A fascinating city I first visited in 1976. At least the "troubles" I ran into back then aren't around anymore.

Rick published a great guide on just how to do it. You can find it online at this link.

For another day trip (or an overnighter) you can go to Cork and visit nearby Blarney Castle and kiss the stone. I got the gift of gab after doing that, and my wife can't shut me up. Find more about Southern Ireland at this link.

There are a number of great day trips from Dublin. Newgrange (Bru na Boinne) is wonderful. A day trip there usually includes Knowth, the Hill of Tara, and the Boyne River Valley, which is beautiful. In a different direction, you could find tours to the Wicklow Mountians, Glendalough, and Powerscourt. Both directions will give you a view of the countryside, but different terrain.

Well, with only 3 days, I would not stray too far from Dublin.

Belfast is nice, but it would take up a whole day. Glendalough is beautiful, and would be my choice. Dublin has plenty to see for two days.

Thanks for all the replies! I think we will go with Belfast or Glendalough as day trips, and then spend some time in Dublin. Thanks for all the help and the links! Happy travels!

Check out the Tourist Information Center in Dublin. They provide day trips to the Wicklow Mts and Powerscourt Gardens ---- very nice areas. The TI also has hop on-hop off buses for Dublin (take the red bus). We used the hop-on-hop-off bus for two days and we got to see a lot in Dublin. Dublin has a lot to offer. You can easily fill up 3 days. I would forget Belfast.
