Traveling between Varenna and Switzerland
Is it possible to take a ferry or train from Varenna to Lucarno? We have a few extra days and would like to go to Switzerland without having to take the train to Milan and then into Switzerland.

No, boat. Lucarno is on a different lake, the ferry would have to make a steep portage over the mountains to do that.
And the train takes a long time to get there with lots of transfers.
The map on Steve's post is from www.bahn.de, the German Rail site. To see the timetables, click on the drop-down flag menu for English. After you get summary timetables for Varenna-Esino to Locarno, click on the arrow to the left of each departure time to see the connecting points.
Okay- I see, does anyone know the travel time by train from Milan to Interlaken?
Now that you know how to use www.bahn.de for timetables for Varenna-Locarno, you can use it for Milan-Interlaken, too. It's the best timetable site for virtually all of Europe.
Suzy,
Could you clarify the information you're requesting. Are you referring to Lugano OR Locarno?
You can certainly take a train, but the travel time will depend on which location you're referring to. If you'd like to take a short day trip to Locarno, you might consider spending a few days in Stresa (which is also about an hour from Milan). From there you could take the beautiful Cento Valli railway from Stresa to Locarno, and then return by boat in the early evening.
Some additional information would help.....
