Scenic Train Trip from Rome

Will be in Rome late Nov & wondered if we take day trip by train either north towards Tuscany or south to Naples, will we see countryside or water? Wud stop for lunch & then return to Rome. Wud like to see Amalfi coast or vineyards in Tuscany. Is trip worth it for scenery alone or need to stop for sightseeing?

The train ride to Tuscany (hilly) is much more scenic than to the Amalfi coast (mostly flat). Either way you will only see land. You MUST stay long enough in Tuscany for at least a little sightseeing and not just lunch.

How about a day trip to Orvieto. It is a lovely little town and not very far from Rome.

Orvieto would be nice, or maybe Cortona. Siena would be a nice day trip, a walkable city, doable in a day, and very picturesque. In some of the smaller towns like Cortona, you have to take the train as far as it will go and then take a bus the rest of the way.
