Venice Transportation to and From Airport
Can anyone suggest the best transportation to and from the Marco Polo Airpot?

What time is your departure from Marco Polo? That can restrict your options significantly.
That depends on where you are going to/from? If you are looking for a ride to/from Venice proper, I suggest you use the Alilaguna (ORO line) water transport. It is a direct and relatively fast route between San Marco and the airport. Currently, the earliest departure from San Marco is at 8:30 a.m. with airport arrival at 9:30 a.m. (25 Euro). The schedule changes by the season. There is reduced service Nov 3 - Mar 31.

Bernadette - From the airport walk outside and down to the pier where you can choose, either a water taxi which will be pricy but a lot of fun, especially if you've never been to Venice OR - take the Vaporetto to the nearest location to your Hotel and they will tell you which stop to exit at. Not sure why anyone would suggest a bus since that would only get you part way to your Hotel!! Please rule that one out> And bernadette - When I say Vaporetto I am referring to the standard transport water facilities that leave the Airport and go into Venice area - Aliguna #81 or any of the others that make the trip - Doug loves to see his words in print and is continually finding fault with all comments that aren't his - OH Well - I'm Italian and have lived there so I might possibly know as much as Doug !! Hi Bernadette, I just returned from my first solo trip to Italy, which began in Venice. I bought a 24 hour transit pass at the airport, and caught the ACTV bus to Piazzale Roma, then walked to my hotel in Dorsoduro. It was about a 5 minute walk. I enjoyed the bus ride, it gave me chance to decompress after travelling 23 hours! The walk was a great way to wake up (it was 9 am)and I really felt like I was really there! Don't eliminate the bus as an option, it is relaxing, cheap and easy. I got plenty of boat time on the vaporettos with my pass. Have a wonderful time!

Because, Greg, the "Vaporetto" doesn't go to the airport. The Alilaguna does. It has limited destinations in Venice - the cruise port (with which I'm sure you're familiar), San Marco and a few other places. The bus leaves directly from the airport (as compared to the long walk to the Alilaguna) and goes to Piazzale Roma. From there you can get to anywhere in Venice.

Am in a similar situation. Departing from Marco Polo at 9:50am. Planning to take bus from Piazalle Roma. Do they run early enough for me to make my flight? Thanks.

The bus takes around half an hour and the cost is 2.5 euros.

But the Vaporetti aren't the Alilaguna. The Vaporetti are the lumbering water buses run by the ACTV and they don't go to the airport. The name "Vaporetto" comes from their history as steam driven boats. The Alilaguna boats are water taxis. They're more expensive, a distance from the air terminal, their destinations limited, and their tickets aren't interchangeable with the ACTV boats.
Oh, and there is no Alilaguna line #81. The Alilaguna line names are colors.
This is a pattern. Greg posts advice that he thinks is helpful but is too frequently misleading. When one of us corrects him, he falls back on his claim that "I'm Italian!" and slams the person who corrected him - both on the public board and also by scathing Private Messages. I first tried to correct him by PM. Then I started correcting him by public response. He continues to give misleading advice that could cost you money or precious hours lost because he tells you to drive your car to the Cinque Terre in August, or to take the funicular to Anacapri (there is no funicular to Anacapri)- or lately, to take the "free" water taxis to Murano.
This is a self-policing board. The integrity of advice given here is aided because we correct each other when we make mistakes or rely on outdated information. Most of us take such corrections in good humor and endeavor to double check our facts in future responses. At least I think that's the goal.
We had a 7:15am flight so the two options were a water taxi (100 euros) or the Alilaguna water shuttle (13 euros). There is an early Alilaguna shuttle from St. Mark's square at 3:40am. A bit painful, but got us to the airport at 5am on the dot. Plenty of time for a small, efficient airport like Marco Polo.
One more thing. I've been told that the cheapest way is via bus from Piazza Roma, but these don't start running until 5am.
Thank you everyone. Knew I could depend on you. Leave on Monday and am very excited. This is our second trip to Venice and I hope I love it as much as the first time.
I am trying to understand the differences in transportation choices for leaving Venice and getting to the airport. We have a flight that leaves at 9:40. Our trip is in May, so we don't have a hotel reserved yet, but I'm in the process of doing that. We are a family of four, so when I look at most costs for water transportation, it appears that a water taxi might be our best bet, since I would pay a flat fee rather than a fee X 4 people.
