I was there in April and its lovely, but there will be snow up in the mountains.

I was there in October. I don't know how December will be, but Bled is very pretty. I wouldn't expect to do much with the cold temperatures - but it is relaxing and beautiful. We took a car from Bled to Plitvice. Drove down A2 thru Karlovac. It took about 3 hours to get to Plitvice. I think a car is the best way. After that, if I were you, I would head to the Istrian Pennisula before going back to Austria. Check out Rovinj to get a taste of coastal life in Croatia.
Last year in Oct we drove from Lake Bled – Julian Alps - Karst Region - Rovinj - Plitvice Lakes – Trogir - Split and then took ferries to Hvar and Dubrovnik. The weather might be dicey in Dec to see/drive the Alps, but the rest of the trip should be ok.
