"Hijacking" posts

I've noticed a couple of people recently apologizing for adding a question to a particular thread under discussion because it may tangentially relate to the topic at hand.

While it's not inappropriate to make such a posting, you should understand two things...

1) You will not receive e-mail notifications of the responses posted to your "hijacked" question, so you may miss some really good answers.

2) The original poster WILL receive all those e-mail responses....many of which may not directly concern the information he/she had requested.

If you need to, you can always include background information in your question....but it's probably more effective to create a new posting, rather than piggyback on someone else's.

That's good information, Norm. I've seen some of those additional questions and wondered if they would ever find the thread again to see if they got any responses. Much easier to keep track of if you ask your own question.

Another good reason for checking the original posting (OP) before answering questions. I try to do that.

I would add a request to not revive long-completed posts to ask another question, too.

I would agree, Doug, but I am guessing that those messages are found via google and no one thinks to check the date. But some are deliberate. A recent 9 month old luggage question was woke by someone with three postings hyping and Eagle Creek luggage sites. I am sure a little buzz marketing.
