Right now, I would like to be in...

Since many who use this board have traveled to places all over Europe, I thought it may be helpful, in a creative sort of way, to give recommendations/ suggestions to others regarding places to travel for future/ upcoming trips. (Consider it one of the general helpline questions that gets asked: 'Where should I go?') So... for those who have traveled to Europe before, right now..

WHERE IN EUROPE WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE AND WHY??

At least narrow it down to a town or city (as opposed to country or region) if not further (a restaurant, museum, hotel, church, hiking trail/ area, park, theater, etc.). The more ideas for places to travel, the better. If you know of places outside the usual Rick Steves recommendations, that can be helpful too. Anyway, I just hope this can give travelers (myself included) ideas and helpful suggestions regarding places to go that you may not have been or even some spots, sights, restaurants, etc. that you may have overlooked traveling last time, so you won’t miss them next time.

Parc Monceau in Paris! It's in a great neighborhood with shops nearby to get everything we'd need for a perfect picnic.

Stuart, since you asked about RIGHT NOW I would have to say the Canary Islands or Mallorca or Sevilla, just from the viewpoint of warmer weather. Actually, Sevilla would be my number one choice.

I would like to either be either in a pub in Edinburgh, or in Athens figuring out what part of Greece I want to visit. Pam

I would like to be filling a basket at Hatchards in London. (And when I leave the store, I will magically be in Rome, holding a cornetto of gelato!)

Right now, if I could go to a place in Europe I've been, I'd go to Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands. I wouldn't mind spending the next few weeks on the black beaches of Los Cristianos or Puerto de la Cruz, not doing much of anything and soaking up the sun.

However, if I had the opportunity to pack up and leave and go anywhere in Europe, I'd go to a place I haven't been, one of the smaller Canary Islands, like La Gomera, or Hierro. Until recently, people in the interior of La Gomera communicated with a whistling language across distances, and I'd like to hear it before it goes completely out of use.

Sitting outside at my favorite Paris cafe on Ile Saint Louis, by the pedestrian bridge, drinking a citron presse, and eating raspberry Berthillon, people watching, listening to a street musician, seeing the back of Notre Dame with her flying butresses, looking around at the beautiful architecture and the Seine river. Pure bliss.

Well, this is the time of year that it finally starts to make the rest of the year worth living in the Northwest. Spring is so beautiful and I appreciate the sun more than ever.

That being said, I would be in Tuscany if I could now. It is always magical there, but springtime is so wonderful there. I have always wanted to be in Rome for Easter. That is on my list of things to do.

Great topic!

Ahhh.... I'd be walking central London, from Leciester Square to Covent Garden. Taking my time, people watching and stopping at all the market stalls that grab my attention- talking with the vendors and thinking about the theatre show I'd see tonight. Then I'd dream about the train I'd take tomorrow to York, then on to Edinburgh and Invereness. I'd plan on touring a distillery and enjoying a wee dram.

London. Walking along the Thames, having already bought tickets for a show that night, preferably something Shakespeare. I'd be remembering my tasty breakfast that included wonderful cheese, and finding a spot to eat my sandwich from Pret a Manger. Dinner would be a tasty salad from M&S. I would have done a London Walk in the morning, one of the ones I haven't done yet.

At my favorite little wrought iron table on the sidewalk outside the cafe drinking a cup of cafe au lait, eating a brioche from the patisserie next door, up the hill in Villefranche-sur-Mer, overlooking the Cote d'Azur. Failing that, walking along Bankside in London. I could go on and on!!! What a wonderful subject for this time of year, thank you Stuart!

Rosemary, we stayed in the B&B above Murphy's Bar in Dingle, petted the dog, ate the food and listened to the music. I'll be back in May.

It may still be a bit early, but I would love to go to visit Monet's Garden in Giverny in the spring. It was beautiful in July, so I can't imagine what it would be like in Springtime.

So many, many choices but right now ... in Cologne. I have a photo of my wife and I sitting at a table in the Alter Markt there sipping a Guinness from Flanagan's Irish pub. You can read the joy on our faces of being in Europe, being together and experiencing it all. And that's why we travel.

Larry - Have fun in Dingle in May. Wish we were going back then. Hopefully next year. This year we are going to France. Have a great time.

Anyplace I haven't been yet is always high on my priority list.

Amazingly, that includes gems like Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and North Africa (though I probably wouldn't choose to spend my own money to go to any of those).

Iraq - crap; Afghanistan - crap. If you won't take my word, Kellogg, Brown, and Root are probably hiring.

Right now--Brescia, Italy in a restaurant near the Cathedral. If it were summertime, I would like to be in Plitvice, Croatia or the Aareschlucht--Meiringen, Switzerland. Or the Partnachklamm outside Garmisch Partenkirschen.

Even though it's cold, right now, I would be in PARIS with spring coming on. "I love Paris in the spring time, I love Paris in the fall." Secondly. I would be in Berlin-Potsdam right now and just put up with that cold.

I would be at La Palma a house outside of Lucca in the kitchen or outside lounging with a book and thinking about where to have dinner in Lucca tonight.

Having locally caught wild venison goulash, washed down with homemade schnapps (that is strong enough to run a lawnmower) at the Hotel Maximillion in Reutte Austria.

Either that or simply on final approach to any major airport in Europe :)

I would be wallking along the Seine with my wonderful husband, thinking there couldn't be a better place to spend my vacation. Anywhere in Italy is a close second.

As a reply to Brad's post; I was able to travel across Afghanistan and Iran years ago in a more peaceful time, and both countries are breath-taking in their beauty. Kabul was a vibrant and interesting city, and Tehran was and probably still is a beautiful city with tree-lined boulevards. These beautiful places live in my mind, and it is sad that both countries have endured so much suffering and strife over the past thirty years.

I would be in Firenze. The more I visit, the more I like it. The food, the wine, the people, the history, the entire vibe of the city is just amazing. If I had to pick a single spot, I would be in Trattoria Mario where I have the most wonderful lunches and meet so many really interesting people, locals and tourists alike.
