Prague to the Dolomites

We will be leaving Prague mid September and are wanting to spend some time in the Alpe di Siusi, and stay in Castelrotto, before heading south.....Does anyone have a suggestion for a quick trip from Prague to the Dolomites? Many, many thanks.

Depends on how you are traveling. By car, train, or bus. By car take the freeway south past Ceske Budejovice bypassing Cesky Krumlov into Austria (near the equally lovely medieval city of Freistadt) then south to Linz to catch the freeway to Salzburg and Innsbruck. From there south across the Brenner Pass into Italy (South Tirol). This is bilingual territory, because most of the population is German-speaking. Alpe di Siusi/Seiseralm and Castelrotto/Kastelruth are very close to the freeway and just south of Bressanone/Brixen. Check train options, because there is a train line heading south from Prague to Budejovice and thence to Linz, where you can catch one of the many IEE trains frequenting the Vienna-Innsbruck corridor. Get off in Brixen. For a little research in the area I suggest visiting www.suedtirol.it

I hiked the Seiser Alm last fall (mid-Sept 09). We stayed in Ortisei in Val Gardena which was relatively close to Autostrada. We were a three minute walk to gondola. Town had lots of charm and famous for its wood carvings. If you have a car, some of the passes you can drive through are awesome - including the Sella Pass. Lots of switchbacks but very picturesque.
