Where to go? Winter Europe Travel

Where are the best places to go in Europe during December after a 3 month study away in Spain (on a shoe-string college budget)?

Berlin is the cheapest place for those on a budget. Cheap apts or hostels, cheap food, lots of free things to do and see, including Christmas marktets. It is a good place to base yourself for side trips too.

I usually think south of the Alps in the Winter. South of France, Italy (especially southern), Greece and Turkey will be nice. Turkey may be the cheapest of the group but the prices in tourist areas will be low that time of year.

Depends on what you mean by "best". For me, nothing beats the winter sports in the Alps, but of course, skiing and snowboarding are not for everyone. Because of the shorter daylight hours (much shorter in most of Europe than SC) and frequent fog, daytrips and rural sight-seeing ideas have to be less ambitious. Plan on spending more time in cities than you would in the summer.
