Hotel itinerary for upcoming trip

I thought I would put up the list my intended budget hotels for my upcoming trip to see if anyone has had any experience with them. I want to hear any type of experience-good or bad. All of the places are recommended in RS books, but I would appreciate some “real” advice. Also, if anyone has any other suggestions for around the same price, I would appreciate it! Luzern- Backpackers Luzern Gimmelwald- Pension Gimmelwald Lausanne- Lausanne Guesthouse and Backpacker Chamonix- Hotel de l’Arve Zermatt- Hotel Bahnhoff Varenna- Orange House Castelrotto- Residence Garni Trocker Salzburg- Christkonig Pension or Institute St. Sebastian Halstatt- Gasthof Simony or Helga Lenz’s Zimmer Zurich- Hotel Krone Thanks!

We stayed at Orange House in 2008 and thought it was great value. The hosts are very nice and Varenna is wonderful - have fun!

We stayed in Gasthof Simony in Halstatt and loved it.

I recommend the restaurant up the street with all the fish-heads mounted on plaques outside (like hunting trophies). You'll know it when you see it.

Thanks for the input.

Any reason we should stay away from taking rooms at hostels in Luzern and Lausanne? The only downside that I've heard about is that it can be noisy. Curious to know what people's experience has been, especially in a private room.

I have stayed at Hotel de l"Arve in Chamonix. It was great. I don't think you will be disappointed. We stayed there in 2001 and 2008-had to stay somewhere else in 2003. It was more expensive and not nearly as nice. We also have stayed at Helga Lenz's Zimmer in Hallstatt. We loved it, but it is up a big hill. She was very nice. They have this system of getting groceries and supplies into the house by using a pulley system out back. Very interesting. Have a great trip.

Another vote for Hotel de l’Arve in Chamonix. We were there last fall and were very satisfied.
